5 Celebrities Who Got Really Sick After Going on an All-Meat Diet – One Green Planet

Posted: September 19, 2020 at 10:05 pm

Although eating is a fundamental aspect of life, dietary preferences are often complicated and polarizing. From plant-based to paleo to keto, the optimal human diet has been a long-contested topic. In the past few years, the carnivore diet has garnered mainstream attention and despite rigorous scientific studies showing the negative effects of this diet, anecdotal claims have inspired more people to try out carnivorism.

Proponents of the carnivore diet claim that this lifestyle is revolutionaryand contradicts conventional conceptions of nutrition science. Many advocates of carnivorism claim that this diet has drastically changed their lives the reported benefits range from stabilizing energy levels to curing autoimmune diseases. But how do these claims measure up to scientific scrutiny? Read on to learn about five celebrities who tried the carnivore diet and the impact that eating so much meat had on their health.

James Blunt was recently in the news for developing scurvy after two months on an all-meat diet. This ailment was the result of a petty vow to spite his vegan and vegetarian friends. His decision to eat only chicken and mince backfired as Blunt admitted he quickly became very unhealthy and was diagnosed with scurvy. As Azmina Govindji, the spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association pointed out, eliminating plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, and legumes can result in low levels of vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. Govindji explained how crucial these nutrients are stating, not having enough vitamin C can leave you feeling tired and lethargic, while fiber from oats and barley can reduce your blood cholesterol levels; and potassium helps your heart muscle to work properly.

Its safe to say that if a particular diet results in a disease historically associated with malnourished sailorsyou should probably try other options.

Mikhaila Peterson, the daughter of the controversial psychologist and professor Jordan Peterson, has been advocating her self-titled Lion Diet since claiming that exclusively eating ruminant meat (cows and lambs) has cured her physical and mental illnesses. A couple of years ago she garnered mainstream attention when, despite having no educational background or training in nutrition, dietetics, or biology, she began to sell her expertise for $599 per year. Aside from her lack of formal education, Petersons branding for her Lion Diet has a few red flags alerting to the pseudoscientific nature of her claims. For example, all of her evidence for the success of this diet is based on anecdotal claims (most of which are personal) rather than scientific evidence. Similarly, she claims that this simple diet is a cure-all for ailments ranging from auto-immune diseases to mental illness. Many fad diets, such as Petersons, rely on pseudoscience rather than rigorous scientific research, so familiarizing yourself with the telltale signs of pseudoscience is essential.

When Mikhaila Peterson began her Lion Diet, her father Jordan and mother Tammy joined her. While Mikhaila made lofty claims that this new diet cured her and her parents illnesses, news stories of her familys health undermined these claims. In 2019, her mother was diagnosed with kidney cancer and her father attended rehab for antidepressants. So while Mikhaila kept claiming on social media that her Lion Diet cured her and her fathers health, she willfully omitted her mothers severe health struggles. Furthermore, kidney cancer specifically is linked to meat consumption, so omitting her mothers health is not only dishonest but also potentially dangerous to the people who are following her carnivorous lifestyle. Secondly, in a now deleted video, she made claims on her youtube channel that she had completely turned her fathers health around and gotten rid of his mood disorder (video can be found here at 3:44) However in February of 2020, she contradicted these claims by revealing that her father had been constantly taking medication and was now in rehab dealing with addiction to that medication. While Mikhaila might claim her Lion Diet has cured all of her health problems, the health of her parents demonstrates how misinformed she really is. In an interview with The Atlantic,Jack Gilbert, the faculty director at the University of Chicagos Microbiome Center, claimed the Lion Diet is a terribly, terribly bad idea, adding, if [Mikhaila] does not die of colon cancer or some other severe cardiometabolic disease, the life I cant imagine.

Joe Rogan is a popular podcast host who has routinely commented on veganism and in 2019, he even admitted that the lifestyle is perfectly healthy. His favorable comments came after hosting a debate between James Wilks, the producer ofThe Game Changers, and Chris Kresser, an advocate of the paleo diet. Despite claiming on Instagram that Wilks knocked it out of the park in defending veganism and his film, Rogan began a carnivore diet in January of 2020. While he claims that this month-long experiment caused rapid weight loss, he also vividly details his issues with diarrhea caused by this diet (he compares it to a rainforest mudslideyeah). Rogan fails to consider that his weight loss might not be caused directly by his diet, but rather indirectly through his excessive diarrhea. This problem could be caused by a number of things. For one, meat is known to cause a host of ailments sometimes resulting from salmonella or E. coli contamination. Furthermore, the lack of fiber in the carnivore diet could result in malnourished good gut bacteria which could lead to issues like diarrhea. Aside from these gastrointestinal issues, eating two servings of red or processed meat a week is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death. While Rogan only stuck to this diet for a month, the health problems could be long-lasting.

Shawn Baker is a prominent advocate of the carnivore diet and former M.D. who had his medical license revoked in 2017 due to incompetence. Despite his lack of qualifications, Baker continues to push his beliefs about the carnivore diet and, much like Mikhaila Peterson, claims that this diet is a cure-all. However, his health has been called into question several times, specifically regarding his cholesterol levels. In 2018, after 15 months on a carnivore diet, he discussed his bloodwork on Robb Wolfs podcast. Youtuber Mic the Vegan discussed Bakers blood test results in his own video. Mic points out that in the podcast Wolf concedes that Bakers total cholesterol is high (205 mg/dl), however, he conveniently neglects to mention Bakers LDL or bad cholesterol. Using a simple equation, Mic discovered that Bakers LDL cholesterol was incredibly high (149.2 mg/dl), in fact, his LDL cholesterol was about twice as high as the optimal level. Such high LDL cholesterol puts Baker at extreme risk for atherosclerosis. Not only that, but Mic points out that his blood glucose levels put him in the diabetic range and his testosterone levels were off the charts low.

While these individuals maintained an all-meat diet for the health benefits, scientific evidence demonstrates how detrimental the carnivore diet truly is. Dr. Lawrence Cheskin, who dubbed the carnivore diet the heart attack diet, has an explanation for the short term health benefits some carnivore dieters experience. In an interview for Inverse, Cheskin explains that sometimes the perceived health benefits are not from the diet itself, but simply the result of losing weight. He goes on to say that sometimes it looks like having all meat lowered your cholesterol when in fact if you had the same amount of calories but they were all red meat, then youd be raising your cholesterol.

Marion Nestle, Ph.D. and professor emeritus of food studies at NYU, believes that these carnivore dieters can think and eat whatever they want and thats fine. She is quoted at the end of the Inversearticle matter of factly, sayingIs [this diet] going to be good for them? No. But thats their choice. While technically Nestle is right that ones diet is ultimatelytheir choice, the unsustainable and unethical nature of the carnivore diet extends beyond the individual making the action.

Reducing meat from your diet is not only scientifically demonstrated to be beneficial to your health, but a meat-free diet has the lowest environmental impact. It is one of the best actions you can take as an individual to limit suffering and destruction in this world.

While the carnivore diet is extreme, even less restrictive meat-heavy diets pose a serious threat to ones health. As mentioned, just two servings of red or processed meat a week is linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and death (for reference, the average American eats five servings of red or processed meats a week). Take the Atkins diet popular for allegedly helping with weight loss, this diet restricts carbohydrates while increasing the consumption of proteins and fats. Research suggests that consuming large amounts of protein and fat derived from animal sources can increase ones risk for heart disease and some cancers. Similarly, the Paleo diet typically includes large servings of red meat and has been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular problems, diabetes, and certain cancers.

By contrast, research has shown vegan diets to be protective against ischemic heart disease and cancer. Similarly, individuals following a vegan diet are at the lowest risk for developing type 2 diabetes. Following a plant-based diet not only has a myriad of health benefits, but you can also feel good knowing that your choices are better for the animals and the environment!

The One Time Michael Jordan Wore Another Player’s Shoes in an NBA Game – Sportscasting

Posted: July 21, 2020 at 12:54 pm

Michael Jordanis arguably the greatest basketball player in thehistory of the NBA. He also has a famous shoe brand that is worth a lot of money. Jordanwore his shoe brand, and now you see players and people walking around in his shoes.

There was one time during his playing career where he did not wear his shoe and ended up wearing another players shoe. Lets find out who that player was.

Before the shoes were created for the world, the Air Jordan sneakerswere made exclusively for Jordan. The shoes were designed for Nike by Peter Moore, Tinker Hatfield, and Bruce Kilgore. During his rookie season, Jordan had the chance to sport his new shoes that no one has seen before. The Air Jordan I was the first shoe of his collection. The shoe featured a red and black colorway, and the shoes ended up being outlawed by NBA Commissioner David Stern because the shoes did not have enough white in them. There was a rule in the NBA where shoes had to have a certain percentage of white featured. After the shoe was banned, Jordan and Nike released the Jordan I in colorways with more white featured in the shoe.

After that shoe was created, more and more of the Air Jordans came out. Nike expected to sell $3 million worth of Air Jordans after four years, and they sold $126 million after one year. That tells you how much people wanted to wear his shoes. The demand for Air Jordans was very high. During the late 1980s and mid-1990s, not only was Jordan, a top player in the league, but he also had the top shoe in the league. Movie actors, rappers, and other professional athletes who played different sports wanted a pair. Jordan changed the game with his shoe brand.

The Hall of Famers shoe has been released in hundreds of colorways in high, low, and mid-top versions. Air Jordans arent just popular basketball shoes, and the shoes are among the most popular shoes on the market. No other professional athlete will be able to top what Michael Jordan did with his shoes.

In 1995 during the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Chicago Bulls took on the Orlando Magic. In Game 3, Jordan did not wear his shoes. Instead, he wore Penny Hardaways Nike Air Flight One shoes. That was the first and only time Jordan wore another players shoes. So why did he wear them? When Hardaway first came into the league, Jordan admired his game. In an article from The Undefeated, Hardaway talked about how Jordan saw him as the next star in the NBA.

Hardaway was signed to Nikeas a rookie, and he wanted to see if the brand could make him a custom pair of the Air Jordan 9s. Jordan agreed to have it done, and that made Hardaway one of the first players outside of Jordan to wear player-exclusive Air Jordans. When the Bulls were playing the Magic in the 1995 playoffs, Jordan was fined $5,000 for wearing shoes that were too white. Jordan had to find another shoe to wear. Instead of wearing one of his other shoes, he decided to wear Hardaways Nike Air Flight Ones.

No other NBA player can say that Michael Jordan wore their shoe except for Hardaway. Jordan did not have to wear Hardaways shoes, but he did it out of respect, and they had a good relationship. In Game 3 of the 1995 Eastern Conference semifinals, Jordan went to work wearing Hardaways shoes. He scored a series-high 40 points, but the Magic won the game and went on to win the series and advance to the NBA Finals.

But Hardaway will never forget the time when Jordan wore his shoes. We all know that Michael Jordan is one of the fiercest competitors ever. Hes not gonna wear just anybodys shoe, he wouldnt do that for a lot of people, Hardaway said. For him to do that for me, it was the ultimate level of respect.

What are the Gilbert mayor and council races about? What to know before you vote – AZCentral

Posted: at 12:54 pm

Opinion: Gilbert has a hotly contested mayor race, three council seats and a general plan before voters in the Aug. 4 primary election. Here's what to know.

Gilbert mayor candidates (from left) Brigette Peterson, Matt Nielsen and Lynne King Smith.(Photo: file photo)

Gilbert politics are generally divided between two camps: The conservatives, who are backed by state legislators, and the moderates, who are backed by those who historically ran town government.

If you wanted to oversimplify it, you could say the Aug. 4 primary roughly follows those lines.

But theres a lot more nuance to the mayor and councilraces. Heres what to know:

No matter who wins, the mayor and council will look a lot different next year. Depending on the outcome of the election, only one member Aimee Yentes could remain in office.

Mayor Jenn Daniels isnt running again. Neither is Councilman Jared Taylor. Vice Mayor Scott Anderson also is up for re-election.

Even more of a shakeup occurred this spring when Eddie Cook resigned to fill an appointment as county assessor, Brigette Peterson resigned to run for mayor and Jordan Ray resigned to run for justice of the peace.

That set up a politically contentious process that drew a surprisingly robust 105 applicants. Bill Spence was appointed to fill Cooks seat, which still has two years left on his term, while Yung Koprowski and Scott September were later appointed to fill Petersons and Rays seats.

They arent facing election this year.

But the amount of turnover has perked up both sides, who see this election as a bid to solidifytheir influence.

There are three candidates technically four, if you count write-in candidate Joshua Lipscomb running for mayor.

Matt Nielsen is executive vice president of a charter school management company and founder ofthe Educational Freedom Institute, a charter school think tank. He has criticized the growth of town government during the pandemic and called for increased personal responsibility instead of government solutions.

Nielsen is running with council candidates Laurin Hendrix and Tyler Hudgins, and his endorsements include conservative state Reps. Warren Petersen and Travis Grantham, council members Yentes and Taylor and the socially conservative Center for Arizona Policy Action.

Looking for the other side of the story? Subscribe today for access to even more opinions.

Brigette Peterson is a community volunteer. She served on the planning commission for 14 years and was elected to the council in 2014. She has said she intends to serve as a full-time mayor and that her top priority is to ensure businesses remain stable despite pandemic uncertainty.

Peterson counts moderate formercouncil members Ben Cooper, Les Presmyk and Don Skousen among her endorsements, as well as the Gilbert police and fire unions.

Most of the attacks in this campaign have involved Nielsen and Peterson. But theres a third candidate on the ballotwho has amassed a giant war chest more than her opponents combined, with a slew of individual contributions.

Lynne King Smith is CEO of a ticketing software business who started a co-working space targeted toward women in downtown Gilbert. She also counts business growth and recovery among her top priorities.

King Smiths endorsements include former Gilbert Mayor Cynthia Dunham, Howard Morrison, the creator of Morrison Ranch, and former Gilbert school board member Adelaida Severson.

Its possible, given their priorities, that King Smith and Peterson may split the moderate vote in Gilbert.

There are four candidates running for two four-year seats.

Scott Anderson is the sole incumbent. He was a longtime Gilbert planning director who helped found the Riparian Preserve. He was elected to the Town Council in 2016 and has support from former Mayor Cynthia Dunham, former Vice Mayor Larry Morrison and the Gilbert police and fire unions.

Tyler Hudgins runs a social media consulting business and has chaired the downtown redevelopment commission. He is running with mayoral candidate Matt Nielsen and has collected more cash than his council opponents.

Bus Obayomi is an immigrant and program manager at a technology company who has said he was motivated to run, in part, to bridge cultures and welcome those who dont feel welcome in Gilbert. Former councilman Victor Petersen ranks among his supporters.

Kathy Tilque recently retired as the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce president and CEO after two decades at the helm. She has support from former Mayor John Lewis, former council members Ben Cooper and Don Skousen and Gilbert police and fire unions.

Arguably, Tilque could be considered a favorite of the moderate camp and Hudgins of the conservatives, but its harder to draw the lines on Anderson and Obayomi, who have reached out to members of both camps.

There are two candidates on the ballot for the two-year seat, plus two write-ins: Ronaldo Ruiz and Garrett Glover.

Laurin Hendrix is a conservative former lawmaker who now serves on the Maricopa County Community College District board. His tenure as board presidentwas a rocky one, as he and his colleagues battled the faculty. Hendrix is running on mayoral candidate Matt Nielsens slate and has the support of conservative council members Aimee Yentes and Jared Taylor.

Bill Spence was appointed to the seat in March. He is a retired Navy lieutenant commander and serves on the parks and veterans advisory committees. Spences endorsements include moderate former council members Ben Cooper and John Sentz, Gilbert school board member Jill Humpherys and the Gilbert police and fire unions.

Gilberts general plan is on the ballot. The plan must be adopted by voters every 10 years and is supposed to help guide development decisions a critical document, given that the town is expected to developthe last of its last major vacant parcels by 2030.

The version before voters will be in effect for the final decade until that happens.

Virtually every candidate touts smart growth and additional job growthas priorities. There has been huge interest during this electionin previous development decisions, including a 2018 vote on a controversialCity Gateapartment complex that the developer eventually withdrew.

The latest generalplan does not take any radical turns from whats alreadyin place, but for the first time it organizes what kind of development should go where around three major themes: Community, opportunity and connectivity.

It is an attempt to recognizethat many planning decisions including housing, business development, transportation and recreation are interconnected.

Yet the plan has largely flown under the radar: It received no arguments for or against it.

Gwich’in Tribal Council election to go ahead this summer – CBC.ca

Posted: June 21, 2020 at 1:49 pm

COVID-19 won't hold back the Gwich'in Tribal Council elections that are due this summer, but they will look a little different.

"Four years ago, candidates could travel into the communities, meet, campaign, have public meetings," said Mary Ann Villeneuve, who was appointed chief returning officer Monday. "It's gonna be a little different now."

That's especially, she said, if any candidates come forward from outside the Northwest Territories, which would mean they'd have to self-isolate for two weeks before travelling within the territory.

Villeneuve, who served as the chief returning officer in the 2016 council election, says she expects social media to make up for the potential lack of in-person campaigning.

"I know there are some elders who are not part of that social media group but a majority of the population is familiar with it," she said.

The position of grand chief and deputy chief are both up for election. Each position comes with a four-year term.

Villeneuve was busy setting up her office in Inuvik, N.W.T., on Tuesday and has yet to work out the dates for the election, including the deadline for candidates to put their names forward.

Gwich'in members will be able to vote by paper ballots in Fort McPherson, Inuvik, Aklavik and Tsiigehtchic the four N.W.T. communities that are members of the Gwich'in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement, signed in 1992.

"We'll make sure that we're following distancing, making sure that everything is clean," said Villeneuve. "People have been going through this transition so they're pretty much aware of what's to be expected."

Gwich'in both within and beyond the Gwich'in Settlement Area will also be able to vote online on election day, or in an advance poll.

CBCNews was unable to reach Grand Chief Bobbi Jo Greenland Morgan to discuss whether she would run again, or deputy chief Jordan Peterson. The other members of the Gwich'in Tribal Council board are appointed by each of the four community councils.

You can follow updates on the GTC Election 2020 Facebook page.

The best way to teach critical thinking – Daily Trust

Posted: June 20, 2020 at 11:03 am

For centuries, people have been interested in critical thinking the way to learn it as well as the best way to teach it. And scholars have proposed different solutions and techniques.

However, the solution I find more practical, is the one proposed by Jordan B. Peterson one of the worlds leading psychologists and the bestselling author of 12 Rules for Life.

But first, lets answer the question: Why is critical thinking important?

because thinking makes you act effectively in the world, Peterson said in one of his lectures. Thinking makes you win the battles you undertake. And those could be battles for good things.

Dear our valued reader, we would like to hear your view about a membership club that we plan to launch. Kindly help us fill this survey.

The essence of Petersons argument is that without thinking, we wander around the world rudderlessly. So in defining our terms, critical thinking means thinking effectively. For our purposes, therefore, we define critical thinking simply as thinking.

So what is the effective way to teach thinking?

The best way to teach people critical thinking is to teach them to write, Jordan Peterson said.

If you can think and speak and write, Peterson continued, you are absolutely deadly. Nothing can get in your way. That is why you learn to write. I can not believe why people are not told that. It is the most powerful weapon you can possibly provide someone with.

What is the evidence that writing is the best way to teach critical thinking?

We can see the evidence all around us. Globally, you can see that some of the most influential people are writers this is not only because they have platforms (newspapers, books, etc.) from which they can command attention, but also because their vocation has taught them ways to communicate ideas persuasively.

That is why once you learn how to write (think) effectively, you dont have to be a writer to enjoy the same influence or success.

Here is what the clinical psychologist, Jordan Peterson said about that:

I know a lot of people who have been staggeringly successful and watch them throughout my life. Those people, you dont want to argue with them.

They will just slash you into pieces [but] not in a malevolent way. It is like if you are gonna make your point and they are gonna make their point you better have your points organized because otherwise, you are gonna look like and be an absolute idiot youre not getting anywhere.

And if you can formulate your argument coherently, and make a presentation; if you can speak to people, if you can layout a proposal, God, people give you money, they give you opportunities, you have influence that is what you are in university for, Peterson said.

Personally, Ive found that my writing abilities has opened a lot of doors and given me access to leaders in such a way that might not have been possible otherwise. Through writing, Ive become almost all the things Ive always wanted to be; not only that, it has unlocked gates to more ideas, so that I can think even more effectively.

So if writing is the best way to teach thinking, what is the best way to teach writing.

Im going to show you one good way to write which will allow even an average person to present their ideas in a sophisticated manner.

The technique is simple, but the result is impressive I will also, give you the example of a local columnist who uses this style effectively.

However, you should know that writing, ultimately, is a difficult enterprise. It is a skill you need to dedicate considerable amount of time developing.

Some writers even believe that writing cant be taught. You either know how to write or you dont. Sam Nda Isaiah, the publisher of the LEADERSHIP newspaper belongs to this school of thought. I, however, join many experts who believe that it can be taught.

A simple way to present your ideas in writing is to present them in the form of a list. For example, if you want to write about strategies to defeat bandits and the terrorists.

You can simply state that in your essay you would discuss five techniques to defeating these public enemies; then start counting.

Jideofor Adibe, the Daily Trust back page columnist on Thursday, uses this to great effect.

In his latest column (of 18 June, 2020) entitled Nigeria and the promises of democracy, he wrote:

What should have been the important issues to address during the Democracy Day speech? One, I think the president should have used the occasion to underline that democracy is a journey, not a destination; that democracy has various moods and varieties and that our countrys variety is necessarily different in some respects from what one finds elsewhere.

Mr Adibe continued counting in this fashion until his third point. After that, he drew his conclusion.

This technique also gives you the appearance of competence. This is also supported by research.

In the study, respondents were asked to choose who was more competent between two experts after reading answers the experts gave to a question.

Although both experts gave identical answers, the respondents rated the one who formulated his answer in the form of a list as the most competent. For more on that research, read chapter 11 of my book, The Social Science of Muhammad (SAW).

Therefore, using this style to write does not only provide you with a framework upon which to launch your writing, but it also gives you the sophisticated move required to structure your essay and comes with an embedded outline.

Of course, there are other structures you can use. Ive written previously about Barbara Mintos. Ive also written about joining the conversation method by Professor Graff, author of They Say, I Say: The Moves That Matter In Academic Writing

However, the list method is the easiest way to approach a difficult business.

If the foregoing argument holds, then we dont write simply to earn grades in school or to fulfil some task, but to learn how to think. And after learning to think through writing, to use it as the go-to tool to navigate lifes challenges and seek success.

Speaking truth to power – Winnipeg Free Press

The global rise of tyrannical dictatorships and right-wing extremism: check. Unbridled exploitation of natural resources: check. The dispossession of land and systemic oppression of Indigenous Peoples: check. The labeling of resistors as terrorists: check. The further racialization, marginalization and subjugation of vulnerable groups of people: check, check, check.

There are many systems which attempt to support and nurture a healthy society, many of which were designed and rolled out following the Second World War and the witnessing of what fascism, racism and greed can do. Public education, for example, is an incubator for our democracy, and there are forces which wish to destroy and privatize it.

MIKAELA MACKENZIE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

Events such as the Black Lives Matter protests that took place June 5 are indicative of the need for collective resistance to divisive forces.

It is this intentional dismantling of public entities that has inspired Ontario academics and activists Cynthia Levine-Rasky and Lisa Kowalchuk to compile their volume We Resist: Defending the Common Good in Hostile Times.

A collection of essays written from activists, community organizers and academics, We Resist argues that there are sinister forces emerging from the depths in plain sight which are threatening this notion of the common good.

The common good, according to the editors, is derived from the understanding of human flourishing "a state in which human beings thrive and enjoy physical, intellectual, and emotional well-being" where we all have the ability to "think, learn, laugh, play, love, and grieve."

Critical to the common good is the commons itself; a healthy biosphere is paramount to our collective flourishing.

But, as we all witness, the common good is perpetually and increasingly under attack. Through the likes of Pam Palmater, Bernie Farber, Carolyn Egan, and a host of leftist and centrist writers and thinkers mainly from Ontario and Quebec, We Resist posits that "the equal-worth premise implicit in the common good is violated by the confiscated and privatization of common resources, and by the subjugation of the powerless by the powerful for the latters gain."

And with the 2016 election of Donald Trump, according to Kowalchuk and Levine-Rasky, the winds have changed.

To the editors and the authors of the essays, there is a newfound bravado in the far right that is determined to intensify neoliberal forces and see fit to the unraveling of democracy, the oppression and eradication of marginalized people, the continued and perverse accumulation of wealth in the few and the degradation of our planet.

By highlighting the insurgence of fake news, the militarization of the police, the labelling of Indigenous and racialized groups as terrorists as well as the mainstream emergence and acceptance of right-wing ideologues such as Jordan Peterson and Ezra Levant as legitimate voices, we find ourselves in hostile times. To the editors, "norms and democratic ideals that matter vitally to the common good are being upended."

And with despair must come hope. The editors have brought these authors together not only as avenues to think deeply about the common good, but also "to inspire thinking about ways that ordinary people can respond." Winnipegs Black Lives Matter and climate strike marches are indicative of the will and need for collective resistance to the sinister forces which aim to divide us.

Through stories of powerful Indigenous resistance (Caitlyn Kasper), the attack on academia (Neil McLaughlin), the roots of Canadian right-wing extremism (Barbara Perry) and more, the authors provide a way out and a pathway to resistance and establishing the common good. This work is a collective work, one in which white allies (this reviewer included) must overcome their "white anxieties." Bernie Farber and Len Rudner capture this sentiment eloquently as they use history as a means to progress forward: "Citizens rather than systems" are responsible for substantive change. In a Habermasian manner, the state alone cannot solve a multitude of crises.

It is through the collective resistance via community groups, labour unions, Indigenous Peoples, allies, racialized groups and all who believe in the common good that we will surmount these hostile times. We are all historical actors. As Farber says, "The ghosts of a not-dead past still beckon us to join them in their dark projects. We ignore their dangerous whispers at our peril."

We Resist is a powerful playbook for those who wish to call out the dog whistling, stamp out racism, xenophobia and mainstream bigotry, resist the privatization of our precious public institutions, and fundamentally ensure that all humans have the means for a decent life.

History will judge us if we succumb to malaise, apathy, fear and hate. Time to resist.

Matt Henderson is assistant superintendant of Seven Oaks School Division.

Quick Hits: Commish on the Cardinals | St. Louis Cardinals – STLtoday.com

Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. addresses the team in the clubhouse at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Fla. (Post-Dispatch photo by Laurie Skrivan)

QUESTION: Who do you favor in the battle of multi-bazillionaires -- the players or the owners? Would love to hear your reasoning.

COMMISH: Neither side has comported itself well, starting with all the leakage of offers, or presumed offers, or responses, or planned responses. That's not negotiating, that's like trying to play the media.

With the pandemic and unemployment and police brutality and racial insensitivity, people are confused, disappointed and, well, downright angry. Baseball, with a golden opportunity to assuage that anger, at least a bit, only has made everyone madder.

There will be baseball soon. But I dare say that baseball's popularity will not soon return -- if ever -- to its height. There is too much distrust, not just between the players and owners but between the fans and either of the above. Baseball already was fighting an uphill battle to present itself worthy to a younger audience. But now it is losing its core audience of adults.

I will be back because nearly my entire adult life has been invested in baseball. I like the game very much -- on the field. As for the rest. . . it often borders on ludicrous. I do not blame anyone if he or she jumps off the baseball bandwagon. You would hope it would be different but with another labor stalemate looming next year, how much can the public endure?

Follow-up: Who was holding a gun to the owners' heads when they signed the agreement in March?

COMMISH: The impasse has resulted from who wrote the agreement, regarding MLB's belief the language suggested that MLB had the right to adjust the agreement if games were played in empty ballparks. The players' union interpreted the agreement to mean the players would get 100 percent of salary, depending on how many games were played.

Jordan Peterson on the Resurrection | Adrian Warnock – Patheos

Posted: June 1, 2020 at 2:45 am

As a Christian who believes in the bodily resurrection of Jesus, and even wrote two books about it, I often feel like I should be full of hope, peace and joy at all times. Yet as I tried to explain in my three year anniversary reflections the truth is the last years have been a struggle to not let go of all three of those things. It is a battle we all face. But it is a battle that can sometimes be especially hard for a Christian because of this expectation we put on ourselves that we should be able to rise above all our problems gliding on some kind of celestial magic carpet!

If we believe in the resurrection of Jesus it does give us an eternal hope that at the very least takes the edge of our pain. But it sure doesnt eliminate it for me. Years ago I wrote a post on the subject of grieving and explained that hope doesnt take away grief it just changes it. I have, like many others with blood cancer, been grieving the loss of my old life. But there has been much to be thankful for and so I have been sorrowful yet always rejoicing.

The resurrection does make a difference though. And our belief as Christians in both our own resurrection and that of Jesus Christ is what marks all of us, no matter what denomination or wing of the Church, out as different from every body else.

In my first book I offered the following definition of a Christian:

A Christian is someone who believes in the physical resurrection of Jesus Christ and lives in light of the implications of that event.

Adrian Warnock, Raised With Christ How the Resurrection Changes Everything

But when asked whether he actually believed the tomb was empty Jordans answer was fascinating and encouraging. He admitted this was something he struggled with and that actually the Bible seems to be full of people who struggle with God. In fact the very name of the people of God in the Old Testament was Israel and it means one who struggles with God. He argued the in reality nobody can be 100% sure of anything and that is what faith is all about . . . READ THE REST

Here are some ways your family can manage the stress of the pandemic – KGUN

GLENDALE, AZ Conversations about mental health are difficult to have, especially as a family. How do you get children, young and old, to express how they are feeling?

"People's routines have been significantly changed," said Jordan Peterson, a community liaison with Aurora Behavioral Health .

Even for those who have not struggled with mental health issues before, the pandemic may have paved the way for depression and anxiety.

However, the team at Aurora Behavioral Health says pandemic-onset depression is something everyone is going through together.

"People are kind of breaking down those walls and barriers a little bit and having [a] more honest conversation," Peterson said.

That is why the facility knew their work had to continue, despite the coronavirus.

"We've had some videos of just kind of creative things around the house that have therapeutic value to them," Peterson said.

Aurora has carved out a section on its website to host some of their in-person mindfulness activities online, in a section they're calling 'Wellness at Home.'

"One of them we even put together was the therapeutic benefits behind playing board games as a family," Peterson said. "You learn a lot of things from a developmental end."

Another activity, mindful grooming, only requires the family pet, or even just a stuffed animal.

Mindfulness means being aware and focused on the present moment or task at hand. Experts say mindful activities decrease stress and increase mood.

"Coping skills might look very different and some people may be like, 'I don't know about this one,'" Peterson said. "But just trying it and seeing what works for somebody else it gets you out of your comfort zone."

Aurora is also offering a way to send that positivity someone else's way during this Mental Health Awareness Month. Visitors to their website can order pre-stamped postcards that include messages like, "I'm rooting for you."

They believe sending a card could make all the difference for someone feeling isolated right now.

"It's kind of nice just to send a quick message of 'Hey, I'm thinking of you,'" Peterson said.
