Film Critic Harlan Jacobson Reviews "The Tragedy of Macbeth" and "Oscar Peterson: Black + White" – wbgo.org

Posted: October 5, 2021 at 4:37 am

Having just come through the Labor Day turn in the film festival world, which is still picking its way through the pandemic with a mix of in-person and virtual screenings, the industry that depends on festivals is plowing ahead this Fall with plans to release films in theaters and by streaming to a smart TV near you. One way or another, youll get your chance to sort out which films live, which ones die and which ones head to the Oscars next March 27.

Ive been to Cannes in July and Telluride over Labor Day in person, and digitally dropped in on Toronto this month, too. And the 59th New York is in progress now at Lincoln Center, having opened with a gala screening of Joel Coens Macbeth with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand in the lead roles.

The Tragedy of Macbeth is an intimidating mountain to climb for filmmakers. Directors because its Macbeth, and producers because they should be willing to lose their investment. Think of Roman Polanskis Macbethin 1971 with Jon Finch and Francesca Annis, screenplay by Kenneth Tynan, which clocked in at two hours, twenty minutes and pondered monarchy.

There was Aussie director Justin Kurzel, who went from Snowtown Murders in 2011 to Macbeth with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in 2015. Three screenwriters on that one, played as a tragedy of generational impatience. Took a bath. And several more highly uninspired takes, till you get back to Orson Welles 1948 Macbeth, a minimalist modern take on corruption that was butchered by Republic Pictures, a horror story of Wellesian proportions.

How promising it sounds to open the 59th NYFF then with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand as Lord and Lady Macbeth in the hands of Joel Coen. Only at 1:45 I am reluctantly persuaded that it has been so compressed that what this Macbeth wants, why he wants it, how the cost undoes him or who in the couple drives the deed always a ripe area for interpretation in other productions that this production never quite drives home its tragedy. In his 60s, at the end of his military glory, Macbeth is bewitched by Coens brilliant rendition of a contortionist witch and witches, all three played by Kathryn Hunter as if wed stumbled into the tent of a medieval freak show. Duncan, whom hes saved, is ripe for the taking, the witch says.

Working without brother Ethan, who ironically is more interested in doing theater, Joel Coen cast the story with half a dozen or so Black actors in roles as consequential as Denzel as the Thane of Glamis, Macbeth, Corey Hawkins from In the Heights and Straight Outta Compton as MacDuff, Moses Ingram unrecognizable from her orphan turn in The Queens Gambit, Sean Patrick Thomas from TV as Monteith, and James Udom from Judas and the Black Messiah as Seyton. On the white side, we have Brendan Gleeson, everybodys favorite tough Irishman, as the Scots king Duncan, played here as the most trusting of souls, and McDormand as Black Macbeths striving Lady.

There is Coens recognizable enchantment with murder and its impact on the soul going all the way back through Fargo and Blood Simple. However, theres no appreciable contemporary subtext to the interracial casting: neither as an exploration for Macbeths wanting power as a grievance nursed in his skin, nor as a rationalization supplied by his white wife. Theres no radical playing with the idea of a dark heart or a conflicted conscience in a contemporary, beloved black leaders rise to power. We are not wearing combat boots in a trek here through Barack Obamas internal conflicts.

You are left with something else, which in its own professional, behind-the-scenes way is what Title 9 is supposed to deliver on the playing fields: color blind casting of great performances by great performers, pure and simple. Race is not being mined here.

Instead, it seems simply part of the black and white designscape of a film presented in what is called the Academy ratio, 1:33 to 1, the more vertical box of classic Hollywood films. Which makes sense in a film about taking power from on high.

In fact, abetted by Carter Burwells thundering musical underscoring, drums and strings, this is a visually stunning Macbeth, designed for the screen by rising production designer Stefan Dechant who served on teams for Lincoln and Avatar, by art designer Jason Clark from Mulanand Black Panther, and cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel who shot Amelie, one of the Harry Potters and Inside Llewyn Davis and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the latter two for Coen. The writer-director-producer and editor Coen gave the visual artists license in this Macbeth to borrow the abstract angularities and black and white planes of light from German Expressionism, the vertical axis up and down that suggests the religiosity of Carl Theodor Dreyers silent 1928 Joan of Arc, and to drape it all in shadows from film noir. From a distance, from the side, from high, low, and below, one breathtaking formally composed scene of black threading white follows another.

Denzel and Francis hold our attention but more as intelligent curiosities, how could they not? They have worn, beautiful faces, they are us now, not stars, and we watch them up their game from playing outside their characters -- McDormand in Three Billboards, Denzel in any of 100 rogue cop roles -- to internalizing tragic figures recently in Nomadland and Fences. Now here in Macbeth, we cant take our eyes off their ambition, but still somehow we sit outside it.

In this Macbeth, the fault is not in our stars, but they are eclipsed by the suns of the crafts who set the stage. Go, when A24 releases Macbeth in theaters for Christmas and Oscar qualification, get that in-theatre experience before Apple TV streams it starting January 14.

Finally, one of the pleasures of any festival is finding the small film hiding in a crack somewhere that brings you into the presence of a god. Oh sure, I could be talking about Ken Burns four-part series on Muhammad Ali, which I caught part of at Telluride and is now playing out on HBO. Or how Jane Campion has undone the Western and Benedict Cumberbatch in Power of the Dog, which debuted at Telluride and earned prominent play at Toronto and the NYFF. Or King Richard, the fairy tale version of how Venus and Vanessa Williams dad, Richard Williams, played with relentlessly irritating charm by Will Smith, made sure his girls not just penetrated white tennis but wrecked it.

Im talking about the pleasure of stumbling through the unforgiving metronome of Torontos virtual screening schedule to catch the world premiere of Oscar Peterson: Black + White made by the excellent Montreal producer and doc filmmaker Barry Avrich about a hometown hero. Peterson came up in Montreal, switched from the trumpet after a bout of tuberculosis to the piano, till he heard Art Tatums Tiger Rag record that his railroad porter daddy brought home. Peterson thought two guys were playing the piano not just Tatum from Toledo, cried for two months, gave it all up. How Peterson comes to be the Michael Jordan of the jazz piano of the last half of the 20th Century at 17 playing Jazz at the Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall is simply a thrilling tour related by the legendary manager Norman Granz, and variously Billy Joel, Jon Batiste, Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, Ramsey Lewis, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Hancock and Peterson himself.

Oscar Peterson: Black + White

It just doesnt get better than this.

BOOTJACK Barbara Amelia Reilly, 89, went to be with the Lord and reunite with her husband Joseph, and her five boys on Monday, September 27, 2021.

Barb was raised on the Mattila family farm in Traprock Valley. Her parents appreciated her willingness to help with the many challenging chores a farm requires. She graduated from Lake Linden High School in 1950.

Barb met the love of her life, Joe, at the movie theater when she was 14 years old. Joe met her and told her in that moment that he was going to marry her. Joe and Barb were married at St. Marys Church in Calumet on May 26, 1951. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at their home in Bootjack in June 2021.

Barb was a loving, dedicated mother. She and Joe spent many years with their family at Big and Small Traverse Bays on Lake Superior. When the kids were young, they took a family boat trip to Isle Royale, enduring terrible weather. Together, she and Joe raised five amazing men, and together their enduring faith brought them through the heartbreaking loss of all of their children.

Among her many talents, Barb owned a sewing business in Laurium with her sister Betty Anderson. She also owned and operated two motels the Superior Motel in Laurium and the Northgate Motel in Calumet. She and Joe also ran the Superior Inn Restaurant in Laurium (formerly the Bon Ton). In recent years, Barb ran a sewing and alterations business from her home in Bootjack.

Barb had an outgoing personality, was always a willing participant, and did things with full and genuine enthusiasm. Some of her adventurous interests included downhill skiing, as well as snowmobiling, boating and motorcycling with Joe. The family was always in awe of her new adventuresespecially skydiving twice in her sixties.

Traveling was another passion of hers. She traveled with her sisters, nieces and friends. They went to New York together every year for many years. Over the next several years, they toured many cities in Europe. A highlight of one of the European trips was visiting the Mattila family in Finland. Barb also took two memorable trips to Israel. She swam in the Dead Sea and was baptized in the Jordan River. She and Joe traveled to many places as well, mainly visiting family. They went to Cocoa Beach, Florida, over several winters, and vacationed in Hawaii with family.

Family gatherings were of utmost importance in her life. Barb truly welcomed all. She was especially known to cook authentic Finnish and Italian food.

Barb was always involved with her church and was a member of the Board. She graciously committed to their needs. She taught Sunday school, made countless meals for gatherings, and regularly served where she was needed.

Barb was dedicated to Christianity and faithfully lived for the Lord. Her main calling was to spread the word of Jesus and she lived it faithfully. She is home.

Michael Jordan blocked Hakeem Olajuwon 3 times in the same game: How the former Bulls DPOY locked up the… – The Sportsrush

Posted: September 26, 2021 at 4:43 am

Michael Jordan once had 3 blocks solely on Hakeem Olajuwon during a Chicago Bulls- Houston Rockets game from 1991.

Michael Jordan cemented his legacy as the scorer the league has ever seen the moment he retired from the NBA for good. His 10 scoring titles and absurd offensive performances in both the regular season and Playoffs speak for themselves. His defense however, is something he was equally good at and is criminally underrated in that department.

Michael Jordan averaged an incredible 2.3 steals per game for his career along with nearly a block a game to go along with that. His quick first step and defensive instincts were his two greatest allies on that end of the floor as it resulted in him even being able to snag a Defensive Player of the Year award in 1988.

Also read: Michael Jordan really scored 42 points on Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: How the Bulls MVP picked apart the Lakers defense in a close loss to the defending champs

Though 1988 was perhaps his defensive peak, he didnt lose all too much steam going into the 90s and this is evident from his masterpiece against Hakeem Olajuwon.

For whatever reason, Michael Jordan felt as though March 25th, 1991 would be thedayhe would absolutely humiliate the man who went ahead of him in the 1984 NBA Draft. Hakeem Olajuwon and the Houston Rockets would win this game 100-90 but not without The Dream having a painful night against MJ.

The game saw Michael Jordan block Hakeem not twice but three times in the 37 minutes he was on the floor. He did so in the paint and near the free throw line too, showing off his quickness as he moved from the perimeter to hunt Olajuwon down. He also stole the ball from him once and got him into foul trouble by drawing three fouls on him.

Hakeem Olajuwon scored merely 13 points this game as compared to Jordan who had an off night, scoring just 34 points in the 10-point loss to the Rockets.

What Did Jordan Peterson And Maxime Bernier Say About Bitcoin And The Austrians? – bitcoinist.com

Posted: September 24, 2021 at 10:28 am

The Bitcoinization of Jordan Peterson is a go. The famed psychologist and media personality had a Canadian politician as a guest in his podcast and couldnt help but touch on the subject. And Maxime Bernier was right there with him, which lead to a brief discussion about Austrian Economics. Even though both Peterson and Bernier are controversial figures, theyre as mainstream as it gets. This isnt Bitcoiners preaching to the choir.

As if he was walking through a minefield, Jordan Peterson approached the subject carefully and in a non-comital way:

The cryptocurrency types. You know? The people whore pushing Bitcoin in particular, make the extraordinarily radical claim that it would be better for everyone if the entire business of money was taken out of the hands of government permanently. And thats essentially what Bitcoin allows. At least at the present time.

Surprisingly for everyone not familiar with the politician, Maxime Bernier agrees and flashes his Austrian Economics credentials. Peterson follows the bread crumbs and asks him about that, Bernier answers:

I believe, yes. The cycles that we have, the ups and downs in the economy, is because of the Central Bank. Money is everywhere, and if you create too much money out of thin air, youll have inflation. And distortion in the economy. And the boom and bust that we have. So, I 100% agree with Mises, Rothbard, Hayek, and these economists.

For more information and Austrian Economics concepts, check The Bitcoinist Book Clubs analysis of The Bitcoin Standard.

In the videos information box, Jordan Peterson s team informs:

In this episode, Dr. Peterson is joined by the Honorable Maxime Bernier, leader of the Peoples Party of Canada (PPC), former MP of Beauce (2006-2019) and candidate for the Prime ministership of Canada.

In 2017, Maxime Bernier tried to win the head of the Conservative Party. He failed. The next year, they removed him from the Official Opposition shadow cabinet. Later that year, he founded the Peoples Party of Canada. In 2019, the novel party didnt do so well, but, cut to 2021 and the Peoples Party of Canada is suddenly on everyones radar.

The National Post explains the main reason:

With protests against COVID-19 public-health measures growing, Bernier has tapped into a deep well of resentment about the way Canadians have had to live for the past 18 months, and fears about what the next months will look like.

Apparently, the Peoples Party of Canada is en route to get 6% in the next Canadian elections. If it happens, theyll become one of the major political forces in the country. The Washington Post explains the situation:

Six percent is not an impressive figure unto itself, and its likely the party will not win a single parliamentary seat. Yet the Green Party won zero seats and 4.3 percent of the popular vote in the 2004 general election and was nevertheless swiftly institutionalized by the media. Proclaimed one of Canadas major parties.

The Canadian psychologist learned from the best. He had four of the brightest minds in the Bitcoin space explaining everything to him, and he got most of it on the first try. We at Bitcoinist broke down the episode, took notes, and transformed them into this analysis: Part 1, Part 2. The most amazing quote was this one:

Related Reading | Bitcoin Gains Steam With U.S. Politicians, Will It Become A National Movement?

After listening carefully, Peterson synthesizes those ideas in a quote for the ages. Whatever energy is expended in the production of Bitcoin and the maintenance of the system should be more than recouped by the increased efficiency of every system that uses Bitcoin as a transactional device. Boom! If we take that into account, Therell be a net energy gain and not a net energy loss if you calculated it across the entire system.

That conversation sparked the Maxime Bernier one. One of Canadas biggest stars talking about Bitcoin in good light with a major political candidate. Who wouldve thought?

‘We may not have to play roulette with her health’ | Mid-South parents & doctors welcome possible COVID vaccine for 5 to 11-year-olds – WATN -…

Posted: at 10:28 am

If the FDA approves vaccine for that age group by end of year, more school children would become eligible. But challenges remain getting more parents convinced.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee Monday, parents and pediatricians welcomed a major vaccine development, after news emerged from Pfizer leaders that the company's COVID-19 vaccine for five to 11-year-olds could be one step closer following a clinical trial on that age group.

"It's been a little bit of an anxiety-inducing fall since August," Memphis parent Jordan Peterson said.

Peterson is talking about her five-year-old daughter Eila, who just started kindergarten, and, for now, isn't eligible for a COVID vaccine.

"It sometimes feels like a race towards, you know, getting our kiddo vaccinated versus maybe having to what see type of COVID case she could possibly get," Peterson said.

But Peterson's COVID worries for her daughter could be lessened greatly soon.

Monday, Pfizer leaders announced their clinical trial on five to 11-year-olds showed the vaccine to be safe and effective. FDA approval could now happen by the end of the year.

"It's sort of a nice reassurance to know that she may have this extra layer of protection, and we may not really have to play roulette with her health on an ongoing basis," Peterson said.

"It's not just about keeping our children safe, it's about to getting them back to their normal lives," Le Bonheur Children's Hospital Dr. Sandy Arnold added.

Dr. Arnold said parents need to treat the situation with urgency, should their five to 11-year-olds be eligible soon for vaccination.

Dozens of Mid-South children were treated at Le Bonheur for COVID in recent weeks, including three who did not survive from COVID complications.

"No child should die from a preventable disease. It's not just about deaths, it's about the disruption and the trauma from hospitalization," Dr. Arnold said.

Now that this latest Pfizer trial is out, Mid-South parents balance patience with anticipation.

"I was just excited to see this is being prioritized and there's momentum in this direction," Peterson said.

While Monday brought promising vaccine news nationally, there's also a harsh reality locally.

Last week, we learned just 35% of eligible 12 to 17-year-olds were vaccinated and Le Bonheur doctors worry those numbers won't be much better if five to 11-year-olds become eligible by the end of the year.

Peter Pan Complex: Signs and Behaviors of the ‘Eternal Boy’ – PsychCentral.com

Posted: at 10:28 am

The boy who never grows up: With the challenges of adulthood, it sounds like a dream, right? For some, its an actual way of life.

We all have days when we want to throw our to-do list in the trash. As a collective, were overworked, overstimulated, and, at times, over it, in general.

But if a laissez-faire lifestyle is interfering with your work, relationships, or other obligations, Peter Pan syndrome also known as Peter Pan complex may be involved.

Signs and symptoms of Peter Pan syndrome may exist on a spectrum, from mild to severe. They also tend to be persistent across situations and over time, instead of sporadic occurrences. Signs and symptoms may significantly interfere with relationships and occupational activities.

These signs may include:

While Peter Pan syndrome isnt considered a personality disorder, researchers have noted some overlapping traits with narcissistic personality disorder.

Experts havent settled on why Peter Pan syndrome occurs, but its likely a combination of factors. These include:

A 2019 paper suggests acting like Peter Pan stems from a lack of bonding with a maternal figure in early childhood.

Other possibilities include:

This attachment style is characterized by a fear of emotional intimacy.

When someone sees commitment as boring, losing control, or disempowering, you can see how a Peter Pan mentality can take hold, says Jacqueline Connors, a psychotherapist in Napa Valley, California.

Peter Pan complex is more common in men, although women can also develop it, Connors explains.

This is because women tend to have a need to nurture and take care of things for people at an early age, she says. However, a woman can have the Cinderella mindset. This is an expectation to be rescued and taken care of by a mature adult.

You fell in love for a reason. In fact, some of these traits may be endearing to you.

This can actually have some strengths to it, says Lauren Cook, PsyD, a therapist based in Los Angeles, California. Chances are, what drew you to someone with Peter Pan syndrome was their lightheartedness, love for life, and sense of adventure.

Of course, too much of a good thing can sometimes hurt.

Unfortunately, everyone has a shadow side, and Peter Pan is no exception, as youll recall in the story, she adds.

If you feel unsupported, frustrated, or ready to get serious, heres how you can manage the situation.

If terms like man child are any indication of how society feels about those with Peter Pan syndrome, it isnt good.

Try not to contribute to the stigma and have compassion for your partner. Right now, they may lack the tools to form healthy interdependence, but change is possible.

You can be kind and firm at the same time. Just like Wendy confronts Peter Pan in the story, try not to be afraid to advocate for your own feelings, needs, and desires.

Consider evaluating your to-do list. With love, you can let your partner know youll be handing off some tasks, but not all of them.

Try gifting them the opportunity to take care of chores, finances, and other obligations.

If your partner refuses to take action, you may want to reevaluate the relationship.

If you stay, it may be necessary to adjust your expectations. You may have to accept that you cant change or fix them; they must be willing to change on their own.

When your partners needs are front and center all the time, it can be draining.

Try journaling, talking with a friend, or working with a therapist to refill your own cup.

The allure of never growing up is understandable. But if youre ready to explore a different avenue, heres how to navigate change.

Try taking inventory and consider these questions:

You know what they say: We must feel it to heal it.

Lean into the discomfort of settling in, Cook says. It can feel unnerving to sit with our relationships and our feelings, rather than run away from them. Practice leaning into boredom and familiarity. You may see that there is actually comfort that comes with long-term connection.

It may be challenging to make progress on your own. Consider reaching out to someone for support.

A therapist can help you identify patterns, reframe your situation, and teach you coping skills for lifes ups and downs.

Some people do and some dont. But, more often than not, some intervention is needed.

Though we all continue to age with every passing second, it is not time itself that leads toward change, Glowiak says.

Rather, awareness of the issue and concerted effort will help someone work through this, he says.

Adulthood presents many unique challenges. Its natural to occasionally long for younger years with fewer cares.

But if you actively live to skip responsibility, you may be dealing with what some call Peter Pan syndrome.

Although not a formal mental health diagnosis, this pattern of behaviors is possible in some people.

As psychology professor Jordan Peterson explains in a popular lecture, Peter Pan reminds us of the perils and pitfalls of adulthood.

Peter Pans closest example of a grown-up, Captain Hook, is a tyrant desperately trying to fend off an unrelenting crocodile a metaphor for time, the great equalizer of us all.

While you may not have a ruthless reptile at your doorstep, you likely have bills, appointments, emails, voicemails, children, aging parents, and, now, a pandemic.

Learning to face it all, perhaps with the help of a trusted professional, can allow you to integrate the best parts of youth with the wisdom, and reward, of growing up.

As J.M. Barrie, Peter Pans creator, famously penned, To live will be an awfully big adventure.

Top 10 Great Podcasts That Are Worth a Listen – The New Paltz Oracle – SUNY The New Paltz Oracle

Posted: at 10:28 am

Whether youre on the green taking in the pleasant weather or people-watching from a desk, theres nothing like the sound of folks jabbering away on a podcast that makes the day fly by or your study session go faster.

10) The Heart

A narrative podcast by the award winning Kaitlin Prestcreator of CBCs The Shadows,The Heart examines themes of sexuality, identity, love, loss and all that makes us human. Featuring guests from all walks of life and their unique contributions you are never sure what part of the soul the Heart will stimulate. A passage that sticks out for its realness is when contributor Kamala Puligandla said in reference to a date, It went well to a point and then it felt like a job interview and the job was to be her very successful girlfriend which I failed This podcast is great if youre into intimate chats about the point of life and like decent background music.

9) The Read

This podcast featuring youtuber Kid Fury and former writer Crissle West covers everything from pop culture, current events to their outsized personal lives. Theres a clear bent towards black culture to the degree that it feels like reverse code switching with both hosts making if you know you know style references. The podcast covers a variety of topics before culminating with a section called The Read where the hosts take turns reading and dissecting recent headlines. Its worth a listen and a laugh.

8) Sex with Emily

Do You like sex? Specifically with women named Emily? In all seriousness Sex with Emily is a forward thinking podcast covering sex and relationships hosted by sexual therapist and published author Emily Morse. Topics range from the queer spectrum, relationship dynamics, sexual strategies and gender dynamics. She pulls guests from all walks in life, famously Nico Torterolla, actor on show younger who discussed his essay on bisexuality and made some entertainly risque comments regarding cunnilingus while chatting with the host.

7) Tifo Football

6) The Daily

A news podcast run by the New York Times and featuring host John Barbaro, The Daily guides listeners through the news events of that day sometimes, but not always coinciding with headline topics of that day. Aside from Barbaros trademark staggered introductions and signature vocal cues while listening to other guests, this podcast is refreshingly straightforward. He simply walks the audience into and out of stories that are important like the election fraud hoaxes during the 2020 election or the death of George Floyd. The end result is listeners leave the episode up to date on the days most important issues. In one car ride, you might know more about an issue than someone reading the paper and one could argue thats the point of a modern podcast.

5) The H3 H3 Podcast

This comedic podcast hosted by husband and wife team Ethan and Hila Klein is both bizarre and comforting. Originally begun as a side project for the couples skits, the podcast blossomed into a self aware commentary on YouTube culture and current events. Theyve had guests on in the past such as Shane Dawson or even Jordan Peterson. Each interview or segment seems like a livestream thats been stumbled into at the last moment, and in a good way.

4) The Rewatcheables

A member of the Ringer Podcast network The Rewatcheables dissects previously released movies going back decades and explains why they should be rewatched (or seen in the first place). It features Bill Simmons, blogger Chris Ryan and the odd guest. Quentin Tarantino, for example, appeared on a show discussing Christpopher Nolans Dunkirk. Right up the alley of cinephiles, The Rewatchebles is an example of a podcast that inspires, primarily to do nothing but stay in and watch movies, but even so has a real impact.

3) The Joe Rogan Podcast

The Joe Rogan Podcast usually styled as JRE has recently moved to Spotify after years on Youtube, not that it mattered. This insanely popular podcast hardly needs help with viewership. For three hours, former host of Fear Factor and comedian Joe Rogan interviews guests from a wide range of disciples and backgrounds and rather than necessarily ask questions he holds free flowing conversations that last hours. Anyone from a lawmaker to musician to comedian to biologist is liable to appear; he meets each with the same enthusiasm. It falls into the category of turn on and let it happen podcasts and is worth a listen.

2) Lore

The Lore podcast, conducted by Aaron Mahnke, is a real life horror themed podcast where stories are told, that, at face value arent very shocking or interesting until you realize theyre real. The current running through this podcast is the belief that the real life and the supernatural are not so divorced. Habitually eerie this podcast is great to listen to after dark if you have the bravery. Even without the bravery, Mahnkes metronome-like voice is great for getting to sleep.

1) Fresh Air

NPRs long-running radio show also available as a podcast is the definition of evergreen. Terry Gross and the team of Peabody award winners create a program covering contemporary arts and cultural issues that is both intimate and didactic. Nothing appears to be off limits because her voice makes the world feel at home.

Would Plato tweet? The Ancient Greek guide to social media – BBC News

Posted: at 10:28 am

But if you adopt the view that almost everyone is wrong, and most influencers are to be mistrusted, how are we to arrive at what's right? And if, on the other hand, one's content is sincerely focused on the pursuit and expression of the objective truth, one must further ask, how do we obtain it? And is there such a truth?

Questions such as these permeated Plato's cultural scene. The sophist Protagoras was said to have espoused a theory of "relativism", which essentially suggested that since our individual perceptions differ, we are each limited to our own subjective construction of reality.

One can see how this thesis is exemplified by aspects of the social media experience, as we scroll through an apparent infinity of information, yet always within the confines of our private information bubbles.

Plato sought to refute Protagorean relativism, and to find a criterion for objective truth. When he wrote his "Republic", he envisioned an ideal society, ordered under the guidance of the one kind of person who's able to glean that pristine truth from the welter of public opinion the philosopher.

To combat the problem of distinguishing desirable from undesirable information good from bad influencers Plato introduced an infamous degree of censorship into his theoretical city. Jenny Jenkins at Swansea University has speculated as to whether he would have allowed citizens to use Facebook, surmising that this would have been a resounding "no"."Facebook does not have the intention of promoting morality, and does not particularly seek to educate its users," she writes, "so I think Plato would have disapproved of it for this reason alone."

Rather, Plato proposed that education and entertainment, and discourse in general, ought to be strictly regulated, with virtually all independent arts suppressed. If it doesn't promote the welfare of the community in accordance with rational principles, ban it. On his ideal platform, the only fully authorised content creator is the state, and that content is "the Form of the Good", as deduced by the insights of philosophy.
