Lord Of The Rings: 10 Things About Arwen and Aragorn’s Relationship That Make No Sense – Screen Rant
Posted: January 17, 2021 at 9:45 am
The Arwen and Aragorn relationship is the main romantic relationship from The Lord of the Rings series, but some of it just makes no sense.
The Arwen and Aragorn relationship is the main romantic relationship from The Lord of the Rings series. Many people were engaged in their love story and wanted them to be together and happy. However, there are a lot of things about their relationship that dont make a lot of sense.
RELATED: The Lord of the Rings: 10 Fan Fiction Relationships We Wish Were Real
For people who only watched the movies and didnt read the books, things about Arwen and Aragorn and what keeps them apart can be even more confusing. Theres also the fact that the movies often add things in to tell a more watchable story, so there are definitely many aspects of their relationship that dont make sense.
While in many fantasy stories, especially newer ones, there are often relationships between different races, this wasnt the case in Tolkiens world. The reasons for this are kind of confusing and hard to explain, but the premise is that they basically have different gods.
Also, since elves live so long, its always going to be a lesson in heartbreak to be with someone who dies so quickly. However, it still seems way rarer than is realistic.
In the movies, Arwen gives this necklace to Aragorn as a representation of her love for him, but its not very well explained. Theres a sense that it is somewhat magical or contains her grace, but this is very vague.
While Arwen in the books did wear a white jewel, she actually gave it to Frodo. This necklace was mostly a movie invention, so its hard to say precisely how powerful its supposed to be.
In many ways, the world of Middle-Earth is fairly old-fashioned when it comes to gender roles. There are some exceptions to this for sure, but Arwen seems very much like an old-fashioned lady or princess whose father, Elrond, has a lot of say in her life.
However, since the movies tried to update things somewhat and give the women more of a storyline, this comes across as weird and patronizing.
While its technically possible for any human and elf pairing to fall in love, the thing that sets Arwen and Aragorn apart is that she has the ability to choose to be mortal or immortal like her ancestor Luthien.
RELATED: Lord of the Rings: 5 Times Aragorn Was Inspiring (& 5 Fans Felt Sorry For Him)
The reasons for this are a bit weird and have to do with the god figures in the world. While this is the explanation, its still not presented well in the movies. And, it seems like Arwen could realistically just live out Aragorns life and find happiness, but things are complicated.
In the books, Arwen is hardly mentioned at all in the main plot. The love story of Aragorn and Arwen is told in the appendices, but Arwen has very little role in the series.
However, the creators of the films wanted to include some of this love story while also giving Arwen more of a role. This means fans see her also as a capable warrior, so the fact that she never goes to see Aragorn again doesnt make a lot of sense.
In the books, Aragorn is a bit less of a reluctant hero than he is in the films. However, since that makes for a more interesting story with character development, Aragorn in the movies doesnt want to become the King of Gondor.
However, the reasons for this are rather shaky, and it makes him seem unwilling.
In one way, this makes a lot of sense. Aragorn clearly carries a lot of guilt over their relationship because he doesn't want Arwen to give up her immortality for him. He obviously loves her and doesnt want her to be hurt because of him.
RELATED: Lord Of The Rings: 10 Best Quotes From The Women Of Middle-Earth
However, it can also come across as if he doesnt respect Arwens choice in the manner. He is rather back and forth about things in an attempt to push her away.
Even if Arwen chose not to give up her immortality, theres a chance she would have died young anyway. Elves are immortal but they can die of things like battle wounds, and they can also die of a broken heart.
This is kind of a dramatic trope, but it is something that Tolkien laid out. And, in Arwens case, almost all of the elves would be gone from Middle-Earth by the time Aragorn died, but its a very weird concept in the first place.
Given how loyal Aragorn is, it always felt a bit weird in the movies when he did seem briefly to consider being with Eowyn. While at that point he technically had tried to break things off with Arwen, it did feel out of character.
Its clear that Eowyn would be the easier, sensible choice in a way, but its hard to see how this makes sense for him given the epic nature of his love for Arwen.
This is another thing that only happens in the movies, not in the books. This was definitely a way to create even more drama and desperation for Aragorn and drive his story forward, but it also just doesn't make sense.
If at this point fans presume shed already given up her immortality, then she would obviously be at risk if Sauron had his way. However, this applies to every person left in Middle-Earth. The movies make it seem like Arwens life force is almost linked to Saurons power, and this is strange.

Dutch futuristic multi-metal eruption, Cryptosis, have released behind the scenes footage from the shoot for their latest video, Prospect Of Immortality. Find the new footage, as well as the official video, below.
On the single, the band stated: "'Prospect Of Immortality' is a song in which we used an experimental approach of songwriting. In contrast to other material, this song is a lot more atmospheric and doesnt make use of a clear verse/chorus structure. The lyrics are written as a suicide note by a person who can no longer cope with the 24/7 surveillance and human experiments that she is being subjected too. The experiments and lost sense of reality has caused her to believe suicide is the only way out. Trapped inside a continuous cycle of endeavours, she is unable to succeed. The song consists of 5 chapters, each representing a different part of her reality."

Well-known stage and screen actors Ed Asner and Tovah Feldshuh star in a PBS concert reading of his play, "The Soap Myth," hosted by theHolocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus. It was filmed last January in New York and is viewable online now.
This Sunday, watch a Zoom conversation between playwright Jeff Cohen and Detroit News film critic Adam Graham.
"The Soap Myth" is set 50 years after the end of World War II and tells the story of an elderly Holocaust survivor,Milton Saltzman, who believes the Nazis turned the fat of murdered Jewish people into soap.
He teams up with a young investigative journalist in hopes that historians and museums recognize his eyewitness account. The play also delves into the evils of antisemitism and Holocaust denial in present day.

"In the power of live theater lives a certain immortality," said Cohen in a press release about the virtual performance. "Five years from now, 50 years from now, 150 years from now when an actor portrays Milton Saltzman, Milton is alive. For those 90 minutes, Milton lives in all his rage and all his sorrow and all his stubborn refusal to be silenced. And when Milton lives, rest assured, he will not let the audience forget the Holocaust."

Ahead of the national championship, Justin Fields high school coach relives his dominance in Georgia – Saturday Down South
Posted: at 2:59 pm
Less than a week from the College Football Playoff National Championship, Matt Dickmann returned a phone call from an out-of-town writer. Dickmann has answered a ton of these calls over the last 3 years. As Justin Fields high school coach, it comes with the territory. Its different now than it was when Fields was the decorated 5-star Georgia recruit at Harrison High School (Ga.). Fields dad, Pablo, handled any and all media requests that came their way once the season started. Dickmann used to tell media members looking for a Fields scoop that he wouldnt talk about his quarterbacks recruitment, but that hed be happy to talk all things Harrison football.
On this day, though, Dickmann is ready to talk all things Fields. Like, hes so ready that before the writer can get out the first question, Dickmann interjects when he hears a claim that Fields success at Ohio State was something that everyone saw coming.
Oh no. If you ask me, it caught a lot of people by surprise. I remember what all of those people were saying a couple years ago. I remember what they were saying on College Football Live, Dickmann told SDS. I was saying at that time, They are all gonna eat their words.
Two years after Fields well-documented transfer from Georgia to Ohio State, hes right where he wants to be 1 victory from college football immortality.
While Dickmann didnt have any say in Fields switch after his freshman season in Athens, he couldnt have drawn it up any better. Go figure that Dickmann grew up in Ohio and hes a lifetime Ohio State fan. Dickmann says he wouldve been happy to watch Fields play anywhere, as long as it wasnt the team up north.
COVID prevented Dickman from being a semi-regular at Ohio State games and practices in 2020. Nonetheless, his memories of Fields dominance as a prized Peach State recruit are clear as day.
We were playing Sprayberry (Ga.) one time, and he had a guy coming dead at him. He spun out of it and then he continued to go on and break I dont even remember how many tackles but it was silly, Dickmann said.
Dickmann can tell all sorts of Fields stories. By the time plays like that became a regular occurrence during Fields senior year, he was known as one of the top recruits ever in the 247sports ranking era. His closed-lipped recruitment he flipped from Penn State to Georgia didnt stop the regular appearances from college coaches from flocking to the sidelines to see Harrison play.
Theres an oft-used GIF of Kirby Smart was the reaction from a play that Dickmann recalls well. After Smart showed up in a helicopter to watch his 2018 quarterback commit take on Dalton High School, he got a front-row seat to watch Fields avoid a sack, roll to the right and throw to the other side of the field for a touchdown.
That gave us this internet gold:
That was also the same game in which Fields suffered a season-ending broken finger. The last play of his high school career came when he scrambled and spun into a Dalton linebacker.
He ran off Im like, Son of a gun. I hope that thing is just dislocated. But nope, it was broken, Dickmann said. Whats funny is in 34 years of coaching, Ive never had anybody break their finger. (Fields) broke his finger twice, once on the left hand and once on the right. Thats what happens when youre trying to make something extra happen.
The irony of that injury was that against Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, Fields got hurt again by spinning into a linebacker and taking an awkward hit.
Maybe Ill have to talk to him about that, Dickmann said with a laugh. No more spinning.
When Fields was at Harrison, Dickmann made the decision to abandon the offensive comfort zone he had developed over the course of decades. His Wing-T based offense added modern spread concepts in Fields sophomore year. The first time we put in power-read, Dickmann said, he went 60 yards to the house.
In Fields junior year, Dickmann went all in with the run-pass option system. It was more shotgun, more spread than anything that Dickmann had ever run. Fields, a 4.0 student, got the concepts down and took off with it.
He truly was a dual threat in Dickmanns tweaked offense. It didnt have a bad play design because of Fields ability to make something out of nothing. When teams like Allatoona loaded the box and blitzed Fields, he still found ways to pick up first downs with his legs or hit an open receiver. Fields would have stat lines like he did his senior year against Sprayberry, who watched him rack up 7 touchdowns with 16.4 yards per pass and 16.9 yards per rush.
When Harrison faced North Cobb as a senior, Fields had 208 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns in a 45-42 loss. Fields tried to take the blame for the loss because he was stripped on a play that led to a North Cobb touchdown. Dickmann wasnt having any of it, though. He had to remind Fields that letting up 45 points fueled that loss.
Justin Fields doesnt get rattled, Dickmann said. The only thing he does do is hes very critical of his play.
Thats why Dickmann said even when Fields has a bad game like he did against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship, it doesnt happen in consecutive weeks.
Nothing surprised Dickmann about Fields career day against Clemson. It was the culmination of 2 years spent mastering Ryan Days offense, which was different than a Georgia offense that had much less emphasis on the downfield passing game. As Jake Fromms backup and occasional change-of-pace quarterback, only 2 of Fields completions in Athens went for more than 25 yards (one of which was hitting a tight end on the seam on Cover-3).
I just dont know that Justin ever felt there was a package or a plan for him (at Georgia), Dickmann said. If theres no plan or package, obviously its tough for someone whos that talented who wants to compete. I just dont think he felt he was getting that opportunity.
On Monday, Fields has an opportunity to close his college career in much better fashion than the anticlimactic finish to his high school career at Harrison. With limited capacity for the national championship, Fields will certainly have a group of supporters rooting him on back in his home state, especially at Harrison.
These last 2 years have been special for Dickmann. Besides the fact that he watched Fields star for his beloved Buckeyes, Dickmann led Harrison to its first state title in 2019. He went out on top and called it a career after 34 years. Theres still part of him that wonders how things couldve played out in the state playoffs had Fields not broken his finger in 2017, but Dickmann has no problem filling a half-hour phone conversation with the things he did watch the generational quarterback do.
As Dickmann closes the book on yet another phone interview centered around Fields, he answers 1 more question.
Any special plans to watch the national championship on Monday night?
Nah, Dickmann said. Just gonna be here at home. Probably gonna be a nervous wreck, as always.

Inverted tulips, juniper trees added to Iran’s national heritage list – Tehran Times
Posted: at 2:59 pm
TEHRAN Inverted tulips in the city of Mahneshan as well as two juniper trees in Tarom, northwestern Zanjan province have recently been inscribed on the national heritage list, IRNA reported on Thursday.
Each year in the spring, hillsides and surrounding meadows of the city are teeming with colorful flowers, particularly inverted tulips.
Inverted tulips or Fritillaria is one of the 120,000 identified plants in Iran. There are more than 170 species of tulips in the country. It is said that the tulip has some remedial use for arthritis and rheumatic pains.
Juniper is a very valuable and long-lasting species that grows in mountainous and high areas and has a special place in the legends and myths of Iranian people.
It has long been a symbol of immortality in Iranian culture and it can be seen in historical Iranian miniatures.
Some more three natural properties in the region including rhubarb plain, salt spring, and a Juniper forest were also added to the National Heritage list.
Having an opulent tourist circuit with 24 UNESCO World Heritage sites, of which the vast Hyrcanian Forest and Lut Desert are among the natural properties, Iran seeks to acquire a greater share of the global tourism industry by 2025.

How are former Yankees doing in the Hall of Fame voting? – Empire Sports Media
Posted: at 2:59 pm
The voting process for the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Class of 2021, ended on December 31. The ballot has 25 candidates in total, and eight of them spent at least part of their career with the New York Yankees.
Bobby Abreu, A.J. Burnett, LaTroy Hawkins, Nick Swisher, Roger Clemens, Andruw Jones, Andy Pettitte, and Gary Sheffield are among the Yankees that are eligible for immortality.
However, as of right now with 115 ballots published, no one is making the cut to get in. Players in the ballot need to get a minimum of 75% of the votes to gain immortality. So far, Clemens (72.2%) is the closest of the former Yankees, with Barry Bonds and Curt Schilling also flirting with the minimum threshold.
The results will be announced on January 26, and the inductees will be honored in Cooperstown, New York, on July 25, barring any COVID-19-related postponement.
So far, here are the former Yankees and their progress through 115 votes, per NJ Advance Media:
Four first-time candidates were elected to the Hall in the last three years: Chipper Jones and Jim Thome in 2018, and former Yankees legends Mariano Rivera in 2019 (unanimous election), and Derek Jeter in 2020.
Jeters case was notorious, as he fell just one vote short of being the second unanimous election to the Hall after his friend and former teammate Rivera.
Abreu appears destined to get the minimum votes to see his name on the ballot for next year (5%), but Burnett, Hawkins, and Swisher, so far, look as one-and-done candidates.
The rest is here:

Unexpected discovery about stem cell immortality study – News – The University of Sydney
Posted: November 29, 2020 at 6:09 am
Telomeres are the protective caps at chromosome ends. In adult cells, telomeres shorten each time a cell divides and this contributes to ageing and cancer. Pluripotent stem cells, however, are specialised cells that exist in the earliest days of development. These pluripotent cells do not age and have the ability to turn into any type of adult cell.
The surprise finding, published today in Nature, shows that telomeres in pluripotent stem cells are protected very differently than telomeres in adult tissues.
This upends 20 years of thinking on how stem cells protect their DNA, said Associate Professor Tony Cesare, from the University of Sydneys Faculty of Medicine and Health, who is Head of the Genome Integrity Unit at Childrens Medical Research Institute (CMRI) and co-leader of a research team that collaborated on this research.
In adult cells, a protein called TRF2 is essential because it arranges DNA at the chromosome end into a telomere-loop structure. Removing TRF2 from adult cells causes the chromosomes to become stitched together into one long string, which is incompatible with life.
To the researchers astonishment, removing TRF2 from pluripotent stem cells did almost nothing. The chromosomes were normal, the telomere-loops remained, and the cells divided as if nothing happened. Telomeres are therefore protected differently in pluripotent stem cells and adult tissues.
This unexpected finding has major implications for research on ageing, human development, regenerative medicine, and cancer. Previously, researchers expected fundamental mechanisms that protected DNA would be the same in all tissues. This now appears to be incorrect.

Dessie Hutchinson’s journey from Brighton to the brink of hurling immortality with Waterford – Independent.ie
Posted: at 6:09 am
In some ways, the arrival of Dessie Hutchinson back into an already stacked Ballygunner squad was the last thing the Waterford championship needed.
n contradiction, his decision to ditch soccer for a career with the Dise has looked to be just the tonic for the county team.
Prior to 2020, Waterford had taken just a draw from their previous eight championships, a run of results that took its toll on morale in the county.
But Liam Cahill has rejuvenated the squad, with the introduction of former Brighton man Hutchinson helping to revive the county's fortunes.
Already, Waterford have seen off Cork and Clare and went stride for stride for long periods with All-Ireland favourites Limerick.
Tomorrow night, they face Kilkenny in Croke Park for a place in the All-Ireland final. It will be another step in the development of Cahill's team, and another step forward for Hutchinson's fledgling inter-county hurling career.
Of course, Hutchinson might have been lost to the GAA forever. With his contract expiring in Brighton, he looked to be heading in the right direction. He captained the club's U-23s and made his first-team debut in the League Cup.
Business
Hutchinson was set to move to St Mirren on loan in January 2018 to gain first-team experience but then the business end of soccer took over.
The deal fell through around the paying of his wages. An untimely injury followed and suddenly his time was done. It was cruel and swift but just the nature of the beast.
At home he played briefly with Waterford FC, but seeing his brothers JJ and Wayne collect county titles with Ballygunner had its charms.
In truth, the club had never been far from his thoughts. While in England, he'd often puck around with the likes of Aaron Connolly and Jayson Molumby.
The pull of home and people and place never left him. So when he came he played football with Gaultier and joined up Ballygunner training after they had won five in a row in Waterford. It was a major boost to Ballygunner, already the pre-eminent side in the county, but also a blow to the chasing pack.
Earlier this year, they made it seven on the bounce, winning those finals by an average of more than 11 points.
And not too many are betting against them to equal, or even surpass, the county record of nine consecutive crowns.
And if Hutchinson has now found his feet at inter-county hurling, it was football manager Benji Whelan who handed him his first Waterford senior jersey in early 2019.
"We became aware of him for two reasons," Whelan remembers. "One was he was playing football with Gaultier and they were starting back. And also his brother JJ was playing with us at that point.
"So we bounced it off JJ when we heard he was back around and he said, 'Yeah, he's a nice footballer' so we asked him in and he came.
"We had probably a couple of games under our belt in the league. So he came on in a couple of games and as you know, its going to take time to get your footing. But he started championship for us that year.
Talented
"He's very talented. There's no two ways about it. The whole soccer side of things would have given him the left foot and the right foot and he can pick a pass with either foot from any distance. We kept him closer to goal because he was very accurate and we didn't see the best of him because he just needed more time."
Whelan studied exercise physiology in Trinity and noted Hutchinson's pace and agility.
"He trades on mobility. His agility is probably in the higher level, close to elite. He can accelerate and decelerate really, really quickly and he can turn off left or right very sharply.
"And he's also very clever, the way he plays he can create space for himself. So in football he was a natural inside forward."
Despite missing so many formative years, Whelan isn't surprised he has stepped up to county hurling so quickly.
"The thing about Dessie is that he was an accomplished hurler before he left for the UK . . . but for the fact that Ballygunner had so many players of a high calibre, Dessie would have been a big loss.
"Like Dessie would have been a huge loss to any other club in Waterford I would say. But he was always known as an accomplished hurler in Waterford. And all of those guys, who can perform to a high level, tend to have natural talent with co-ordination, balance, movement skills."
Our statistics, collated by analyst Diarmuid Whelan in conjunction with DeelySportScience.com, show the impact he has made in the championship so far.
Hutchinson has taken 12 shots in his three championship matches so far, delivering 2-6 and four wides.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given his relative inexperience at this level, his best performance came in the most recent game against Clare, where he hit 2-2.
Both our touch and shot maps show that Cahill wants the Ballygunner man close to goal, as he gets on the ball and shoots from on or inside the 45-metre line a large majority of the time.
And that's likely where he'll be stationed against the Cats tomorrow.
Team-mate Stephen Bennett has been impressed with Hutchinson so far and insists he'll get even better.
"In fairness to him, he is brilliant, he trains very hard. He is obviously very skilful, but it's his movement.
"I suppose the four years over training professionally definitely helped him. I just think his first five steps are just brilliant. You'd love to take it off him. He's really good.
"He'll always give the option. We need to get better at actually using him, and all our other forwards."
From Ballygunner to Brighton and back again, Waterford can be thankful that Hutchinson is here to stay. And he'll only get better.
