This Is My New Golden Rule for Renting Vacation Homes (I Was Doing It All Wrong) – Yahoo Life
Posted: April 12, 2024 at 5:50 am
My friends and I are big on annual group trips, and to pull it off we love renting unique vacation homes where we can make lasting memories together. Over the years weve tried everything from renting a cliffside villa in Mexico to a cozy winter cabin nestled in the Pocono mountains. And while those trips have been unforgettable, every time we try to plan a new vacation, its tougher and tougher to find a home to rent that will make everyone happy.
Because were a large group that has already agreed on a specific set of dates and location, when we do find a rental listing we all love, the property is either booked solid or completely out of our price range. As it turns out, Ive just been going about the search the wrong way. Ive recently cracked the code, and Im going to share it with you.
The secret to finding an incredible home to rent for your vacation is actually a simple one start with the what, not the where. Look for great entertainment first and a destination second. For more stress-free travel planning, follow this golden rule when renting a vacation home. Youll have more unique options to choose from and wont feel like you have to settle or book super early to snag a great vacation home.
Looking through homes in one place, with specific features available on certain dates, is like trying to complete a puzzle with pieces that just dont fit. But if you focus on the fun stuff you need in the perfect rental first like pickleball, a pool, or a great grill and patio combo and broaden your search to look for homes that offer everything on your list, despite the location, you could discover that your dream vacation rental isnt where you expected it to be. Youre still getting all of that great downtime with friends and family, just maybe two towns or one island over.
I had this epiphany at a press preview with Vrbo to celebrate the brands list of Vacation Rentals of the Year 2024. Each year Vrbo recognizes a curated list of private home rentals that meet a specific criteria: They must be top rated (and raved about) by past guests, offer unique spaces and amenities that promote prime togetherness, and be rented by whats called a Premier Host who values offering an overall quality guest experience.
The homes on this years list ranged from affordable cottage getaways in Big Sky, Montana, and Winchendon, Massachusetts, to luxe hideaways in Cabo San Lucas and Austin, Texas.
I spent three nights at a cliffside escape in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, called Villa Cin Cin. The home was breathtaking, with panoramic views of the island, oversized suites for guests, and cozy indoor and outdoor dining and entertainment areas for yoga and swimming.
Christine, the homes owner and host, told me its often booked by big families looking for a place where they can have la carte fun for all. Her villa is popular because it checks that box, thanks to itsprivate beach access and spacious suites large enough for entire families to visit together, she says.
Going forward Ill start group vacation planning with a list of musts, like a secluded location where we wont disturb anyone laughing loudly all night or a heated pool for a night swim. Ill worry less about the destination and more about giving everyone on the trip the amenities they need to piece together their perfect stay, especially on trips where we rarely ever leave the rental.
Now I search an entire region, like Caribbean, or a state, like Utah, and select the home features that will make us the happiest. Doing this showsmore incredible (and available) options than I have available days off. It also shows more options at every budget and better availability too. No matter where youre looking, consider expanding your view of family (or friend) time, and your search will widen with it.
Happy vacation home hunting!

Fr. Aristides Palaynes and the Golden Rule Community – Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America – Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
Posted: at 5:35 pm
William H. Samonides, Ph. D.
Fr. Aristides H. Palaynes was among the most accomplished Greek Orthodox priests of his generation. He served parishes in Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. At a time when few priests were fluent in English and Greek, he communicated effectively with the younger generation of Orthodox faithful and with the non-Orthodox.
Many of his sermons appeared in local newspapers, and, as an editor of journals and newsletters, he left behind a wealth of written material. His death in 1938 at age 45 deprived the Church of a dedicated, multi-talented servant of God.
In addition to his service to the Church in America, much of his professional life was devoted to the Golden Rule Community (GRC), an international charity he helped organize in 1924 and headed until his death. The GRC aimed to create a social order based on the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount and the Golden Rule: Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them; for this is the law and the prophets. (Matt. 7:12)
He believed that the Sermon on the Mount with its golden rule can revolutionize the world and make it a better place in which to live, not only for the few but for all humanity. He placed the needs of the Church and this charitable organization above his own health, which contributed to his early death.
In 1907, 15yearold Aristides Palaynes arrived in America from Greece, settling in New York City, where he attended high school and then New York University.
From 1921 to 1923, he studied at the St. Athanasius Greek Orthodox Theological Seminary in Astoria.
Fr. Philaretos Ioannou, dean of the seminary and later Bishop of Chicago, described him as a faithful and sincere worker in whatever he has undertaken.
In the fall of 1923, St. Athanasius did not reopen, and Palaynes completed his preliminary studies at the Episcopalian seminary in Nashotah, Wis., where his mentor, Bishop Philaretos, had also studied. Palaynes then returned to New York for a year at the General Theological Seminary, where he received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree in 1925.
Bishop Philaretos called him to Chicago, where Palaynes served as the secretary of the diocese, helped organize the first Sunday schools in the area, and edited the diocese newsletter. In 1927 he married Victoria Karastathis, a native of Samos, and was ordained to the priesthood the following year. In 1928, he was assigned to Holy Trinity in Sioux City, Iowa. He delivered sermons in Greek and in English and gave numerous lectures about Orthodoxy to educate other Christians. He supported joint services for all the Orthodox in Sioux City. He also organized missions in neighboring cities. He was transferred in 1930 to Holy Trinity in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he helped establish a Greek school, a Sunday school, and a parish newsletter. He also started a group for the non-Greek wives of his parishioners.
In 1932, Archbishop Athenagoras, impressed with reports of his accomplishments and his record of social activism in Grand Rapids, transferred him to the St. Barbara parish on the Lower East Side of New York City. This area had been hit very hard by the Depression. The parish was unable to pay its rent and was in danger of closing. It was here that the GRC was most effective.
The Archbishop, along with other Orthodox hierarchs around the world, were honorary members of the organization and acted as its advisory committee. Fr. Palaynes worked tirelessly through the Church and the GRC to provide food and comfort to the poor. He successfully revitalized the St. Barbara parish and did much to alleviate the suffering of people in the neighborhood, but the unceasing labor in difficult conditions took a toll on his health. He suffered a heart attack, and his doctors advised him not to continue. He was transferred to the ocean side community of St. George in Asbury Park, N.J. He held his first service on Jan. 1, 1934, and would remain there for the rest of his life.
The parish did not have its own building. Services were held in the lower level of the public library, which the parish rented for $120 annually.
While working to develop the parish, Fr. Palaynes continued to devote his spare time to the GRC. In October 1934, he took the extraordinary step of giving all his worldly possessions to the Golden Rule Community.
In January 1936, he was hospitalized again. In November, he resigned from the St. George parish to devote his full time to fundraising for the Golden Rule Community, which operated a small orphanage and boarding school and provided a place to stay for the needy and widows.
The Asbury Park Press reported that he would attempt to raise $48,000 by lectures, personal interviews, services, and contributions to promote the activities of his organization.
At the time, the GRC had 133 members, mostly people from parishes where Fr. Palaynes had served and Greek Orthodox priests who shared his vision.
Eventually these labors proved to be too much for his failing health. He died of a heart attack on March 12, 1938. The Golden Rule Community continued to function into the 1940s with Presvytera Victoria taking a greater role, but without Fr. Palaynes leadership it did not last. He had devoted himself to living Christs teachings. He gave his time and talents, and ultimately his life, striving to create a better life for others.
The author thanks Sophia Anest, daughter of Fr. Palynes, of Asbury Park/ Ocean for her assistance. (e-mail Dr. Samonides at [emailprotected])

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have always followed one relationship rule – Marie Claire UK
Posted: February 29, 2024 at 11:11 pm
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are one of Hollywood's most beloved couples, and from their red carpet appearances to their sweet words about each other, they never fail to make headlines.
The couple, who share four children, have been married since 2012, after first getting together in 2011. And despite their action packed schedules - being two of the biggest names in Hollywood, they manage to make it work.
This, according to Blake Lively, is all down to one golden relationship rule that the couple made early on.
During a recent appearance on the Further Ado Substack show, Lively opened up about the rule and its benefits to her friend and host Amber Tamblyn.
"When Ryan and I got together, we made a rule not to work at the same time so that we could always prioritise our personal life," she recalled.
This isn't simple however, with the couple both balancing hectic schedules, particularly when they first started dating.
I'm used to working hard and going and going and going and going and not stopping, Lively recalled. Especially, Gossip Girl was six years of my life, and we were sometimes shooting three episodes at once.
"That takes working really hard when we're not," she continued. "Just like financial planning and sustaining that, it takes balance."
Ryan Reynolds has also opened up about their relationship rule in the past, explaining to Access Hollywood back in 2020 the secret to their happy twelve year marriage.
We dont split up," he explained to the publication. "Like, I shoot movies, and my wife shoots movies, and we go travel all over the place, and we just all go together."
He continued: "I think thats been the best part of it is that we really dont spend a lot of time apart. I get to spend a lot of time with my girls.
We will continue to update this story.

Aitana’s golden rule and the pending account she has with her most loyal audience – WECB
Posted: January 27, 2024 at 3:54 am
In times of pop fallow, the rumor mill grows, and even more so if it is about Aitana. alpha He is barely four months old. However, ardent fans are already eagerly awaiting new material from her favorite artist. It is known that she has little things prepared in the starting box and that sooner rather than later they will see the light, but what is going to be the next step for the most important pop artist in our country? Aitana has pop as the epicenter of her discography, although she doesnt like that her musical eras sound exactly the same. Thats why He usually distances himself from the sounds that the streaming dictatorship rewards and lets himself be carried away by intuition and what he really wants to do at any given moment. It is your golden rule, your daily mantra as member of the Holy Trinity.
alpha was his breakthrough, an artistic disruption that gave him even more credibility than he already had
I go to my record company and tell them: Im going to do this and, if you dont want to, Ill go somewhere else, he told the guys from Triumph operation during his visit to the Academy, referring to his decision to do 11 reasons. At that time she wanted to break with everything before and gain identity as an artist with a very particular sound and a very clear concept. She embraced the dosmilera aesthetic and went on a concert tour where her voice and instruments were the main protagonists. No performance. No popstar. There werent people in the mainstream making this kind of music. It was an idea that came to me and I wanted to do it that way, said the artist. It is difficult to be a woman who makes more mainstream pop and enter the Top 50. It was a bet that I wanted to make and I feel very grateful. The same rule she applied in alpha. Another album. Another concept. Another high level. Here she also did the clean slate, developing the inner pop diva that we all saw in her and that little by little she was awakening. She came out of her shell, cut her hair and talked about the vital moment she was having. alpha It was his breakthrough, an artistic disruption that gave him even more credibility than he already had..
But we return to the starting line. If Aitanas golden rule is to do something different, then who will be the next pop Aitana? Are you going to apply the same rule with the same forcefulness? And most importantly, how are you going to make sense of all of the above? While we wait impatiently to see and hear his future, what will happen to his past? Your visit to Triumph operation It went a long way and was also quite clear about what is left behind. Aitana was sincere and honest with her feelings and sensations and she did not hesitate to confess that now she herself does not feel represented with what was her debut album, Spoiler. I made about sixty songs and I kept five. The others were horrible and yet now I listen to my first album and I say: God, what is this?, he confessed. I have released songs that I dont regret, but I dont like them and Im not going to do them at my concerts because I dont like them..
Telefono has become a kind of pending account that Aitana has with the fans who have followed her from minute zero
One of those topics he talks about is Phone. Her first single has disappeared from the setlist of her concerts. He no longer sings it, even though its melody, the vibes it has, fit perfectly into the Alpha Tour repertoire. Phone It has become a kind of pending account that Aitana has with the fans who have followed her from minute zero, especially when it comes to this song and the story behind it.. When I took out Phone I remember having a very bad day. In terms of data, it was very good, it was crazy, but I felt super empty, Aitana said in a 2020 interview with WECB. I felt like I had failed the people who followed me. For me it was a song that I loved and I went with all of them, but almost all the comments were bad and I accidentally took a beating. Almost four years later I asked Aitana the same question, taking advantage of the wink she gives to Phone in Thinking of youthe track that closes alpha. These were his words then: With Phone I never had to reconcile. I was always very happy with the song. In any case, it was the people who had to reconcile with Phone. I owe a lot to Phone. I trusted that song. But she disappeared.
I speak of a pending account because I consider that it is important not to flee from Phone. The history of pop has always shown that these types of songs, the ones that give rise to the artist, are necessary for the new, the future, to make sense.. He passed to David Bisbal with Latin heart and Bulera. She stopped singing them and, over time, she started singing them again. I perfectly understand the artistic moment that Aitana is going through. And it is completely understandable that he denies right now Phone. However, and this is another personal opinion, Aitana should hug her again soon. Maybe now she does need to reconcile with Phone and I cant imagine a better scenario and moment than the Santiago Bernabe on December 28. Only then will his speech as an artist, and the memory associated with the song, have the value it deserves.

Migrants hold blankets after arriving at Union Station near the U.S. Capitol from Texas on buses in April 2022. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has continued to send migrants arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border by bus charters to Washington and other liberal-led cities. AP
Political hypocrisy is the norm for our times. One shameful example of partisan duplicity is the persistent xenophobic vilification of migrants and asylum seekers arriving to the United States in order to boost ones political scorecard. Two repeat offenders of anti-immigrant grandstanding are Govs. Greg Abbott of Texas and former presidential candidate Ron DeSantis of Florida.
Although migration and border politics have long been a fountain of political currency, gamesmanship with immigrant pawns splashed onto the scene in 2022 when DeSantis and his subordinates coerced 50weary migrants many who claimed they were misled from Texas to Marthas Vineyard.
Jelani Cobb decried the stunt succinctly in The New Yorker, calling the feat an exercise in calcified cruelty, malignant politics, and questionable legality. That sounds about right.
Where DeSantis chases political spectacle, Abbott pursues volume. His steady flow of buses has relocated 80,000 lawful asylum seekers yes, they are lawful migrants to so-called sanctuary cities (including New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and others) since April 2022. They are often stranded without notice to their unsuspecting hosts.
Abbott is no stranger to political charade either recall on Christmas Eve 2022, Abbott dumped 130 migrants in freezing weather at the residence of Vice President Kamala Harris.
The anti-immigrant sentiment does not stop there. Texas passed the most punitive state legislation against migrants in a decade, permitting Texas authorities and local judges to apprehend suspected undocumented migrants and determine their status and deportability, a process normally within federal jurisdiction. This month, three migrants (including two children) drowned on Abbotts watch, while Texas authorities blocked Border Patrol access to the Rio Grande.
Florida legislation criminalizes hiring and transporting undocumented migrants and invalidates lawful forms of migrant identification. In addition, both states have passed domestic health and educational policies aimed at LGBTQ+ adults and children, as well as African Americans.
The central contradiction of Abbotts and DeSantiscruel manipulation and sustained news media performance is that both states are regions of consistent need, vulnerability, and displacement among their own residents not just weary asylum seekers. Texas and Florida sit at the crossroads of both migrant life and climate catastrophe.
These arent one-off crises or anomalies, but persistent, practically year-round dynamics, draining state and federal resources. At times, climate disaster and asylum merge, such as when Abbott bused 37 migrants, including 15 children and a newborn, to Los Angeles during tropical storm Hilary, when California had declared an unprecedented state of emergency.
As we have witnessed in the Trump era, naked hypocrisy among politicians is more of a competition than a behavioral flaw. Abbott and DeSantis should wonder if their chickens will come home to roost. They ought to reconsider their malicious treatment of displaced and needy persons as dangerous winter weather begins and record heat awaits, the latter dovetailing with the annual hurricane season.
In 2022, Hurricane Ian, a Category 4 storm and the deadliest in almost 90 years, slammed Florida and the Southeast. Two and a half million people were placed under evacuation orders.
Nationally speaking, there are wildfires, extreme heat or cold (2023 was the hottest year on record), and brutal storms on our coasts and in the interior. Few know that the United States was ranked fifth in the world in 2020 and sixth at the end of 2022 for persons living in internal displacement as a result of weather and geophysical disasters, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre in Geneva. As well, Texas ranks No. 1 of the 15states in weather-related fatalities over the last nine years.
I doubt that the governors of California or New York will trick climate-displaced Texans or Floridians into a sudden plane or bus ride to Oklahoma City or Colorado Springs, or Knoxville, Tennessee, or some other anti-woke city. But what if taxpayers suffer compassion fatigue or leaders deploy resources reluctantly, as we saw in Puerto Rico for Hurricane Mara?
What if, fearing their own treatment, thousands of migrant laborers documented and undocumented do not relocate to storm-ravaged cities, such as New Orleans after Katrina, in order to rebuild them? Major insurance providers have already made their risk calculations, and four have pulled out of Florida (and two from California) in the past year. What price will Abbott and DeSantis exact on their state residents for flouting the golden rule?
Cynical and reckless endangerment of asylum seekers, including children, for political gain is repulsive and disqualifying for political leadership. The global pandemic taught us that collective concern for neighbors and mutual aid are the only way forward and that rationing safety is deadly.
There are plenty of rationales guiding humanitarian relief, including neighborly concern, religious beliefs, or reciprocal relationships. I suggest we start with plain decency. That should be enough.

The Golden Rule Refined | | news-journal.com – Longview News-Journal
Posted: at 3:53 am
The central message of the Gospel is the result of Jesus death and resurrection. Through His actions we have forgiveness of sins and may enjoy a relationship with our heavenly Father both while we live on earth and then throughout eternity. This truth is summarized in the most recognizable verse in the New Testament, John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
Perhaps the second most recognizable verse in the New Testament is the Golden Rule. Jesus spoke these words as part of the Sermon on the Mount discourse. The Golden Rule is often paraphrased as, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We get a fuller understanding of the Rule when we read the compete verse in Matthew 7:12 In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. It is the last eight words of the sentence that defines how we should act allow me to explain.
Gods word as recorded in the law and prophets details how we should treat others and in turn want them to treat us. Our preferences and desires do not define right behavior. The great lie that caused Adam and Eve to fall in the book of Genesis was the false promise that they would know and define good and evil (Genesis 3:5). Further, several times in the Bible when peoples behavior was evil, the Bible describes each person as doing what was right in his own eyes (Judges 17:6, 21:25). Contrast this the condemnation for obeying the instruction to do that which is right in the eyes of Yehovah thy God (Deuteronomy 13:18).
Please permit me to give you a quick lesson in Greek grammar the language that Matthew was written in originally. In the verse the verb is connects the pronoun this with the phrase the Law and the Prophets. In Greek the verb is identifies the pronoun (this) as being exactly the same as the object of the verb (the Law and the Prophets). So what the grammar tells us is that what is written in the Law and the Prophets is how we should treat other. Can you think of a better definition of how you would like me to treat you than what is written in the Bible?
Earlier in the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said, Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. Jesus lived out (fulfilled) what was written in the Law and the Prophets. He is not only our Savior but also our example. Living out what is written in the Law and the Prophets is how we keep the two greatest commandments to love God (with all our heart, soul and mind) and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40).

6-Year-Old Boy Dies a Month After Adult Neighbor Allegedly Beats … – PEOPLE
Posted: at 7:38 pm
A six-year-old boy who was attacked with a baseball bat last month allegedly by his adult neighbor has died from his injuries.
In an update posted on GoFundMe on Tuesday, Jeremy Diaz's father announced that the boy had a sudden neural storm following weeks of recovery from his various injuries. After six hours, the attempts to resuscitate Jeremy failed and he was pronounced dead, Jeremy's father wrote. The Williamson County Sheriff's Office also confirmed the young boy's death.
He fought for over 60 days and was improving, but at the end, the odds seemed against him, the GoFundMe update written by Jeremy's father reads, later adding: I was there when he took his first breathe and saw him take his last no parent should see their children buried before them. Thank you all for supporting us, and most especially for supporting Jeremy. He was a wonderful and loving child that practiced the Golden Rule. In him I am well pleased.
Jeremy was set to get his ventilator out on Wednesday, because his vital signs were much improved and at normal levels," the GoFundMe states. As of Wednesday, the GoFundMe has earned $316,000 to go toward medical expenses.

The alleged random attack occurred on September 11 around 5 a.m. in Georgetown, Texas. The Williamson County Sheriffs Department responded to a call of a disturbance in a residential area where police identified 39-year-old Daniel Logan as the man who entered his next-door neighbors house and attacked two people, including Jeremy, according to a statement from the department.

Logan was charged with two first-degree felonies: Injury to a child and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against a family member. Logan also allegedly struck his 65-year-old mother, Cynthia Logan, with the bat, according to local news station Fox 7.
"As the investigation continues, we are in constant communication with the District Attorney's Office while awaiting autopsy results," The Williamson County Sheriffs Department's newest statement reads. "Upon receipt of the Travis County Medical Examiner's Office's findings, and if warranted, the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, in cooperation with the District Attorneys Office will present the case to a grand jury for the charges to be enhanced to Capital Murder."
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the young boy as well as his family during this trying time," Logan's attorney, Marc Chavez, told PEOPLE in part in a statement before Jeremy's death. "While the allegations sound troubling, we ask everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts come to light especially while we investigate issues related to serious mental illness."
Jeremy's GoFundMe page described him as a bright, vibrant child with a heart full of dreams and a future brimming with potential.

Several years ago, groups of people from various churches in our county traveled to Haiti some on medical mission trips and other groups to help with construction of churches in Jacmel and Anse Du Clerce. The week they spent there made a lasting impact on their lives.
They told about the tent cities where thousands were living due to the destruction caused by an earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. The day after returning home from the trip, my husband, Greg, went into a local grocery store and commented that he saw more food in that one grocery store than he had seen the entire week in Jacmel. The stark comparison was like a cultural after-shock.
Pastor Franky Jeune, the mission teams interpreter in Haiti, has spoken in many churches in our county. He shares how the Haitians must trust God every day for their food because they never had enough set aside for tomorrow.
I was reminded, once again, how much I take for granted each day. Pastor Frankys statement also reminded me of the request in the Lords Prayer, Give us this day our daily bread, (Matthew 6:11). Its something most Americans do not have to do. We are basically in the one percent and the rest of the world in the 99 percent, when it comes to having plenty of food.
Too often, I have to be reminded of what others do not have to be reminded of why I should be thankful for all I do have. Helen Keller once said, I have often thought it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during their early adult life. It would make them more appreciative of sight and the joys of sound.
Someone once said that the words thank and think come from the same root. Author Max Lucado has asked, Arent you glad that God doesnt give you only that which you remember to thank him for?
Ralph Waldo Emerson once observed that if the constellations appeared only once in a thousand years, imagine what an exciting event it would be. But because theyre visible every night, we rarely give them a look.
Maybe we should consider celebrating Thanksgiving year-round by thanks-living. Make giving thanks a part of daily living. First, theres vertical thanks, directed to God each day as we think of at least one thing for which we are thankful to Him.
Secondly, theres horizontal thanks, toward our fellowman. Say thank you to the person who opens a door for you. Thank the waitress for serving your meal, and then return thanks to God for providing it. When I see a soldier in uniform, I say, Thank you for serving our country. When we grow our gratitude, we are living the Golden Rule (Matthew 7:12).
Thanks is the easiest thing to give a simple spoken word to express gratitude. Dietrich Bonhoeffer once wrote, In ordinary life, we hardly realize that we receive a great deal more than we give, and that it is only with gratitude that life becomes rich.
Jan White has compiled a collection of her columns inher book, Everyday Faithfor Daily Life.
