The Golden State’s New Golden Rule: Section 925 Adds Another Hurdle To Protecting Business Information – InsideCounsel

An employer that wants to protect confidential information from walking out the door with former employees knows to avoid California, a place notoriously hostile to agreements that limit former employees mobility. Alas, California has just made it harder to avoid California.

Suppose you are a nationwide employer that, say, designs and makes digital technology or services the specialty chemical needs of your business partnerseither of which would involve highly confidential, proprietary information. Lets also say that, if your technical information or customer lists fell into the hands of competitors, or walked out the front door with a departing employee, that loss could cause irreparable competitive harm. And finally, lets say that youre a smart employer, and you use various forms of restrictive covenantsnoncompetes, non-solicitation agreements, and nondisclosure agreementsto protect your competitive lifeblood. Good work: every stateeven California, which is viewed in popular mythology as a restrictive-covenant-free landrecognizes that some employer information deserves protection.

Police, citizens should follow Golden Rule | Tri Town News … – centraljersey.com

Painting the words Follow the Golden Rule on the back of every police vehicle sets the tone of behavior between citizens and law enforcement. The Golden Rule states that we are to treat every human being as we would want to be treated.

The idea of supporting law enforcement by a blue line down the middle of the street is meaningless. The blue line is a blank page saying whatever the citizen wants it to say.

Follow the Golden Rule states loud and clear that we want peace officers and not a police state with Gestapo powers.

If your local governing body rejects your request to place these words on the back of every police vehicle, call for them to place it on the ballot for the people to decide in November by way of resolution, which they can do without any long list of signatures.

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. Matthew 7:12

And why worry about a speck in your friends eye when you have a log in your own? Matthew 7:3

I might have a full floweret of broccoli in my teeth, but all I can see is the tiny sesame seed in yours. Jesus taught self-awareness, so why are so many of us believers more aware of others than we are of ourselveswhen it comes toweaknesses andflaws?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, is another way of saying, Be the kind of person you wish others were to you.

Want a spouse that is compassionate, attentive, forgiving, joyful, and faithful?

Be that.

Want a reliable, friend who is tuned-in?

Be one.

Want co-workers that are responsible, truthful, kind, and considerate of you?

Be that.

Want a parent that listens with empathy?

Be one.

We need to stop noticing everyone elses imperfections and start seeing our own. The only way to this level of self-reflection and awareness is through the transforming power of Jesus. Its just too easy to be critical of others and too hard to be hard on ourselves!

The pathway to change is through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. How does that happen? By establishing Jesus as the leader of our lives day by day. You might say, Well, I already made Jesus the Lord of my life when back in 1979. Great! Well done! But have you made Him your Lord today? Today and everyday is a good day to submit to His loving kindness, to ask that His love be manifested in your heart every moment of every day.

First, we need to know we are loved and that our sins are not just forgiven, they are gone! That gives us something to be happy about! The Gospel is truly Good News! Armed with this Good News, we can speak the Good News to others, and tell them that there is no condemnation for those who are in Jesus. We can let the Word of God do its work in the lives of our loved ones, and we can take our critical thoughts and ideas, and get out of the way.

Sick of being a critical person, unhappy about the performance of everyone around you? Be the change you seek in others. Set your gaze above, and pray this plain and simple prayer.

Lord,

If you are even the slightest bit as critical of me as I am of others, I am toast. But Youare not! I made up my mind that I was going to be like You, but I havent followed through with that vow very well. Perfect, though you are, Jesus, you said that you didnt come to condemn the world. So why should I, as imperfect as I am? Why should I notice other peoples mistakes and inadequacies when Im loaded with them?

Would you please forgive my arrogance?

Would you please make me new? Like You?

I receive Your forgiveness as well as Your cleansing power to transform me from a foe to a follower, from puffed-up to loved-up. From self-important to other-centric. From vain to insanely kind. From a grumbler to one who is humbler. From uppity to one who is abundantly caring. From toxic to philanthropic!

Have at my heart to new levels. Make me joyously unaware of others inadequaciesand ever aware of my own.

In Jesus Name,

Amen!

Morality, not the philosophical idea, nor the words, but rather the living blossom of goodwill in action by each and every person forms the basis of human behavior in all great religions. Perceive the golden rule in each of the following quotes.

Christianity: All things therefore whatsoever you would men should do unto you, even so do you unto them.

Islam: No one of you is a believer until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.

Judaism: And what thou thyself hatest, do to no man.

Buddhism: Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful.

Hinduism: Do naught unto others which would cause you pain if done to you.

These precepts have been with humanity for centuries, yet look around the world, our own nation, community, and even our families. If we are going to be honest with ourselves, we must first look into our own psyches. We must find out why we ignore the refugees, the poor, the starving, the homeless. We must find the blockages to our goodwill. Yes, many of us love our family and friends; however, none of the quotes above limit themselves to any subdivision of humanity.

Most people look for some organization, religion, government or schools to solve the problems. Many people in the U.S. believe government holds the key to our safety, our economic well being and even to our happiness. Nothing could be further from the truth. You hold the key. Looking to government or any institution allows us to not have to look into ourselves. We are seldom asking ourselves to step up to shoulder a broader, more inclusive, goodwill. We normally offer a token donation to placate our conscience. These problems are simply forms of a self-centeredness. Those of the Christian religion should read Samuel I, Chapter 8 where the people demand a king. The crux of the chapter lies in verse 7, And the Lord said unto Samuel, Harken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. The chapter goes on to describe the problems that will befall those who put their trust into political leaders. These problems and many more are now rampant.

Everyone of us should now realize that all political parties want control, for control is power. It is you they are controlling. You have given away your independence because you have given away your responsibilities which should be manifest in goodwill to all humanity. The reason we are having economic problems is because our society is more oriented to taking and not giving, to receiving and not sharing, to grasping and holding onto the illusion of lack in the midst of plenty. Those who hold that illusion as well as those who would take up arms against them share a deeper and more profound fear of pain and death. This is despite the recognition by all of the religions mentioned of a consciousness after so-called death. We already saw they all have the mandate to love your neighbor as yourself.

So far fear has trumped the required goodwill, and we continue to ignore the golden rule, rely on institutions to shoulder our responsibilities and then feign ignorance as to the source of the problems. The question is, what is each of us going to do about it?

Editorial: It’s official. Texas rejects Jesus’ Golden Rule – Baptist Standard

Posted: May 11, 2017 at 1:18 pm

May 10, 2017 By Marv Knox / Editor

But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them.Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.Do to others as you would have them do to you. Jesus (Luke 6:27-31)

Marv KnoxIn stark contrast to how much they love to wave the Christian flag while spouting God talk, Gov. Greg Abbott and the majority of Texas legislators sure do enjoy ignoring the clear teachings of Jesus. What part of Do unto others as you would have them do unto you dont they understand?

The Legislature passed and Abbott signed Senate Bill 4, the law that outlaws so-called sanctuary cities in Texas. In effect, it deputizes all Texas law enforcement officers as federal immigration agents. Beyond that, it threatens them with escalating fines if they fail to cooperate with federal agents by not retaining noncitizens who are subject to deportation.

The portion of the law that drew the greatest protest allows law enforcement officers to question the immigration status of a person who is detained, even including during a traffic stop, rather than limiting that authority to occurrences during lawful arrest.

Opposed by business, law enforcement

The law drew protests from business leaders, who fear it will cause out-of-state corporations and organizations to shun moving facilities to Texas or holding events in the state, ultimately harming the economy.

More tellingly, the states law enforcement leaders opposed the bill because it puts undocumented residents at risk of harm, particularly from people and organized groups who would prey on their vulnerability. For example, they will be unlikely to call police for everything from violent crime to unfair business practices if they know they could be deported because of an interaction with police.

We officers work extremely hard to build and maintain trust, communication and stronger relationships with minority communities through community-based policing and outreach programs, noted a statement from the Texas Major Cities Chiefs, composed of the police chiefs in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, Fort Worth and San Antonio, as well as the Texas Police Chiefs Association.

Broad rules, such as those imposed by SB 4, that push local law enforcement to take a more active role in immigration enforcement will further strain the relationship between local law enforcement and these diverse communities. Such a divide between the local police and immigrant groups will result in increased crime against immigrants and in the broader community, create a class of silent victims, and eliminate the potential for assistance from immigrants in solving crimes or preventing crime.

Understandable logic

Protests from police and business leaders aside, support for the sanctuary cities ban is understandable on at least two levels. First is the apparent majority of Texans perception of fairness, and second is concern for safety.

The sanctuary cities ban seems fair because it targets undocumented residents, people who live in Texas illegally. If theyre already breaking the law, the thinking goes, then any means of bringing them to justice and deporting them is justifiable. (Christians are chief among rule-followers. A new LifeWay Research survey shows only 26 percent of Christians are likely to consider whether someone gets hurt when deciding between right and wrong.)

The ban also addresses safety, because supporters of the lawsuch as Gov. Abbott in the statement he made when he signed the billclaim undocumented residents threaten the well-being of citizens and other legal residents.

Those are straightforward lines of reasoning, which can be followed and understood.

Litany of failure

But just because they reflect their own logic does not make them right, and it certainly doesnt mean they reflect the teachings of Jesus, whom so many of the bills backers loudly claim to adore.

The sanctuary cities ban fails Jesus command: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Would any of the bills backers want to be treated this way? Would they want to be put at riskand their families put at riskby a law that makes them fear law enforcement so much they would not feel free to report rape, assault, robbery and the like?

The sanctuary cities ban fails Jesus evaluation: Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me (Matthew 25:45).

The sanctuary cities ban fails the mandate of the Old Testament law and prophets: The duty of God-honoring people is to protect the outsider in their midst.

The sanctuary cities ban fails human decency: It offers punishmentparticularly ongoing vulnerability to powerful predatorsfar disproportionate to the crime.

The sanctuary cities ban exposes Texas hypocrisy: For decades, our economy has thrived upon the toil of undocumented workers. From construction, to petroleum, to agriculture, undocumented workers have lifted the fortunes of all of us. Subjecting them to forces that would prey upon them and bureaucratic structures that would tear their families apart is sleazy and callous.

We can hope and pray the courts will determine the sanctuary cities ban also is unconstitutional: The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution prohibits unlawful search and seizure. Perhaps that will apply to protecting someone from being deported for changing lanes without turning on a blinker.

If Texans refuse to follow the Golden Rule, maybe the courts at least will force us to follow the Constitution.

If you can remember Jimmy Durante, Im guessing youre more than 40 years old, because he died in 1980. He was one of the most unusual entertainers America ever produced. He spoke with a gravelly New York accent. His clipped manner of speaking was unique, along with the silly jokes he told. Sometimes, while singing and playing the piano, he would stop abruptly and say, Stop the music! Stop the music! Then he would launch into a silly story or joke.

He sported a large nose, which he turned into an asset by referring to it as the Schnozzola. It became his nickname.

This Week’s Torah Portion: The Golden Rule – PJ Media

Posted: May 6, 2017 at 3:59 am

Dvar Torah -- Acharei Moth/Qdoshim (Leviticus XVI, 1 - XX, 27)

It has already been noted that the concept of qdusha (sanctity, holiness) implies a separation or dedication to some higher purpose. Thus, Israel, as the nation dedicated to the actualization and propagation of Torah in the world, is called the mamlecheth kohanim vgoy qadosh (kingdom of kohanim and holy nation, Exodus XIX, 6) and is subject to such restrictions as kashruth as a result (cf. Leviticus XI).

Within Israel, the descendants of Aharon, the kohanim who administer such institutions of qdusha as the Temple, are similarly subject to restrictions -- e.g. in terms of whom they may marry -- over and above those that apply to Israel in general.

This manifestation of qdusha certainly finds expression in our parasha. In order to explain why Qdoshim follows Acharei Moth (and, as this year, the two are often read together), Rashi cites a midrash from Torath Kohanim. Acharei Moth ends with an exhaustive list of depraved practices, in particular forbidden sexual unions, against which Israel is warned, characterized as maas eretz Mitzrayim (whence they had just come) and maas eretz Knaan (whither they were going; cf. Leviticus XVIII, 3).

Qdoshim begins with the command: Qdoshim tihyu (You will be holy, XIX, 2), which the midrash, as Rashi phrases it, explains as meaning: Be separate from improper relationships and from transgression, for every place you find limitation of impropriety, you find sanctity.

The Oral Torah is shot through with expressions of this idea. Thus, in Yrushalmi Yvamoth II, 1 we find: Anyone who restrains himself from sexual impropriety is called holy. Similarly, in Shvuoth 18b, Rabbi Binyamin bar Yefeth declares: Anyone who sanctifies himself during marital relations will have male children, as it is said, And you shall sanctify yourselves and you will be holy (Leviticus XI, 44). And close to that: For a woman will conceive and bear a male (ibid., XII, 2). Sons who are fully occupied in Torah study and the fulfillment of its mitzvoth are born in qdusha.

Our parasha reveals another aspect of qdusha besides the already well-established concept of prishuth or restraint mentioned supra. A series of noble precepts enjoin Israel to be kind to the weak and respect the aged, and to refrain from bearing a grudge, from oppression, and from robbery. It culminates in the sublime declaration:

You will not take revenge and you will not bear a grudge against your people, and you will love your fellow like yourself; I am Ha-Shem (ibid., XIX. 18).

This, Rabbi Aqiva tells us, is the klal gadol baTorah (fundamental principle in the Torah, Yrushalmi Ndarim IX, 4) and Rashi, citing the midrash, tells us of our parasha sherov gufei Torah tluyiim bah (that most of the fundamental concepts of Torah are dependent on it).

The Golden Rule – Think Humanism

Posted: May 4, 2017 at 3:47 pm

Humanists try to embrace the moral principle known as the Golden Rule, otherwise known as the ethic of reciprocity, which means we believe that people should aim to treat each other as they would like to be treated themselves with tolerance, consideration and compassion.

Humanists like the Golden Rule because of its universality, because it is derived from human feelings and experience and because it requires people to think about others and try to imagine how they might think and feel. It is a simple and clear default position for moral decision-making.

Sometimes people argue that the Golden Rule is imperfect because it makes the assumption that everyone has the same tastes and opinions and wants to be treated the same in every situation. But the Golden Rule is a general moral principle, not a hard and fast rule to be applied to every detail of life. Treating other people as we would wish to be treated ourselves does not mean making the assumption that others feel exactly as we do about everything. The treatment we all want is recognition that we are individuals, each with our own opinions and feelings and for these opinions and feelings to be afforded respect and consideration. The Golden Rule is not an injunction to impose ones will on someone else!

Trying to live according to the Golden Rule means trying to empathise with other people, including those who may be very different from us. Empathy is at the root of kindness, compassion, understanding and respect qualities that we all appreciate being shown, whoever we are, whatever we think and wherever we come from. And although it isnt possible to know what it really feels like to be a different person or live in different circumstances and have different life experiences, it isnt difficult for most of us to imagine what would cause us suffering and to try to avoid causing suffering to others. For this reason many people find the Golden Rules corollary do not treat people in a way you would not wish to be treated yourself more pragmatic.

The Golden_Rule cannot be claimed for any one philosophy or religion; indeed, the successful evolution of communities has depended on its use as a standard through which conflict can be resolved. Throughout the ages, many individual thinkers and spiritual traditions have promoted one or other version of it. Here are some examples of the different ways it has been expressed:
