The Goldcar golden rule always take a photo when you return a hire car – The Guardian

Posted: July 9, 2017 at 12:37 pm

Hassle the price we paid for buying a cheap deal with Goldcar. Photograph: Alamy Stock Photo

We hired a small car for nine days from Goldcar at Malaga airport in April last year for 41.69. We paid a deposit of 1,205 by credit card. The car was great and we had no problems. When we returned it, the returns officer told us it would be at least a 40-minute wait before anyone could look at it, so recommended we leave the keys. With a plane to catch we took his advice. I took photos of the exterior in case of a query.

A week after returning I received an invoice for 180 to cover the cost of a supposed scratch to the back door, with a photo attached. But Id taken a shot from almost the same angle, and there was no scratch. We disputed the damage and sent our photo evidence (complete with time and date stamp). I then discovered Goldcar had charged us 300. Its only response was, I can confirm the charge has been applied correctly. When I pursued the issue the response was someone will get back to you. It never did. I requested a chargeback via my credit card company, and the eight-week period in which Goldcar could challenge our chargeback has passed. We arent surprised it took no action.

Id like to share my experience to help others avoid the same hassle. MB, Leicester

For years I have warned readers to avoid Goldcar when hiring a car on holiday, and to take photos when you return it. Your letter illustrates why, on both counts.

Over the years we have received several reports from people with similar charges applied. Last year the company said it had changed its management structures and hoped to make these complaints a thing of the past. But we continue to receive a lot of similar tales, and the advice to stay away remains.

Many readers will wonder how Goldcar can offer a nine-day rental for less than 40. Our guess is that it can only make financial sense if it makes money elsewhere. So always photo the car as you hand it back.

The firm says it can understand the customers frustration and we are sorry she had a bad experience. It adds that the charge was originally applied correctly but a refund should have been made when the customer supplied photographic evidence and we are sorry this did not happen. Our offices always endeavour to have staff on hand at check out but there are occasions when this is not possible.

We welcome letters but cannot answer individually. Email us at consumer.champions@theguardian.com or write to Consumer Champions, Money, the Guardian, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU. Please include a daytime phone number

Tallahassee Realtor Bert Pope’s Golden Rule for Real Estate: Etiquette – Benzinga

Posted: at 4:40 am

Bert Pope, the "go-to" luxury Realtor for the largest homes in Tallahassee, lists the top three tips on why everyone involved in a real-estate transaction should practice etiquette.

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) July 07, 2017

As a Realtor, etiquette is important because it shows that the representative is willing to participate in the transaction and not be arrogant about the property. "As for the buyer and seller, having etiquette is imperative because it makes the transaction much smoother," said Broker Bert Pope, founder and owner of Bert Pope & Associates LLC, who recently closed on two of the largest homes in Tallahassee : 6089 Leigh Read and 9279 White Blossom.

To highlight why etiquette is essential in real-estate transactions, Pope, known as "that guy" that offers the most incredible homes and host of the highly acclaimed "Extraordinary Homes of Tallahassee" on NBC TV 40, lists the following three tips:

No. 1: Make the home as presentable as possible. When buyers see that the seller made a good effort in making the home presentable, it shows their willingness in the selling process, instead of having an attitude of "If you like it, you like it; if you don't, you don't." "It's like dressing up for a dance -- you wear your finest clothes and not just whatever you want to throw on," said Pope. "You want the other person to like you."

No. 2: Abide by the Golden Rule. "Treat others as you want to be treated. Everyone is different," noted Pope. "Etiquette is working together to get where you want to go."

No. 3: Always be polite. "People can take it very personally when it comes to negotiations. You need to make sure that you are careful with your words and are polite," concluded Pope. "Be understanding and communicate openly. Never let emotions bubble up. That is why etiquette is so important with communication; it shows good manners. It's all about accommodating as much as you can accommodate."

About Bert Pope, Bert Pope & Associates LLC Bert Pope has been in real estate for over 28 years. Fitzgerald: Old sister ships meet again – Stockton Record

Posted: July 7, 2017 at 2:39 am

Michael Fitzgerald Record columnist @Stocktonopolis

Two sunken ships one raised and restored, another still on the bottom rendezvoused in the Delta on Thursday as the historic peace ship Golden Rule visited the spot off Tyler Island where The Phoenix of Hiroshima lies.

It was a reunion 59 years in the making. Crews from the two sailboats met in 1958. Both made international headlines by boldly protesting nuclear testing in the Pacific.

Its the symbolic reunion, said Helen Jaccard, manager of the Veterans for Peace Golden Rule Project.

Sacramento was on the itinerary of The Golden Rule, a 34-foot wooden ketch touring to support a United Nations nuclear weapons ban. A side trip to visit the Phoenix was a natural.

We might as well sail over her, just a symbolic good luck, and help her being raised, said Jaccard.

A Quaker crew sailed The Golden Rule into a military off-limits zone around the Marshall Islands in 58. Their goal was to interfere in the Cold War-era nuclear testing.

The boat was interdicted, the crew jailed in Honolulu. The Quakers became a cause clbre.

In Honolulu the Quakers met the Reynolds family, who were circling the globe for pleasure on their 50-foot wooden ketch, Phoenix of Hiroshima.

Phoenix Capt. Earle L. Reynolds had spent three years in Hiroshima at the behest of the U.S. government studying the poorly understood effects of radiation on Japanese children.

Appalled by what he saw, Reynolds and family became opponents of nuclear testing, which spreads radiation through winds and ocean currents. Reynolds also commissioned construction of the Phoenix.

Reynolds daughter/crewmate Jessica was a young teen then. Seventy-three now, a resident of Long Beach. Her married name is Renshaw.

Renshaw said meeting the courageous Quakers was life-changing.

They inspired us, she said. When they couldnt go, we went. We picked up the baton and went into the zone.

The Reynolds, too, were arrested, garnering international attention. Two years and much press later, they beat the charges. They went on to make other peace voyages.

By some accounts, the protests built support for the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty of 1963. The treaty banned nuclear testing in air, water or space but allowed it underground.

The Golden Rules exploit also reportedly inspired Greenpeace to acquire its first boat, Rainbow Warrior.

Both The Golden Rule and The Phoenixeventually were sold. Both passed through a chain of owners. Both fell into disrepair. Both, by coincidence, sank in Northern California in 2010.

The Golden Rule sank in Humboldt Bay. It was promptly raised and restored by Veterans For Peace.

The Phoenix and its owner vanished. Only later did it emerge the owner damaged the boat, which sprang a leak and sank where it was tied up. The historic boat rests in mud in 25 feet of water in the North Fork Mokelumne River off Tyler Island.

The hapless owner signed the boat back to the Reynolds clan.

At about 2 p.m. Thursday on a baking, 100-degree afternoon, The Golden Rule came around a quiet bend in the Mokelumne. On the banks Jessica Renshaw, her husband, a videographer and a spectator or two waited near the spot where years earlier searchers located the submerged Phoenix.

So these boats have not been together for 59 years, Renshaw said wistfully.

Renshaw seeks donations to raise and restore The Phoenix in time to sail it, alongside the Golden Rule, to Hiroshima in 2020 for the 75th anniversary of the atomic bombing.

The pacifists say opposition to nuclear weapons is more timely than ever, what with tensions escalating between the United States and North Korea.

To me, it just touches a really deep chord from way back, Renshaw said as the Golden Rule dropped anchor. When we first met The Golden Rule I was 14.

Letter to the Editor: Golden Rule for 21st century – Sunbury Daily Item

Posted: July 5, 2017 at 11:37 pm

Tweet others as you want others to tweet you read the sign in front of the church. It is the Golden Rule, reworded for the 21st century.

Is it too much to ask that this Golden Rule be modeled and followed by the most public figure in the nation, the President of the United States?

Words matter. Words have consequences. In social media, words can even kill, as evidenced by the lengthening list of teenagerscyberbullied into suicide.

Is it too much to ask that our president show more dignity and maturity than to tweet crass, ugly words about our fellow citizens? You were elected to lead, sir, not tweet. If tweet you must, then at least read the sign in front of the church.

John Deppen,

Northumberland

Developing town: The store of The Golden Rule … continued – The Preston Citizen

Posted: at 9:41 am

(Editorial Note: Part 14 of a series of further development in the early days that impacted the settlement of Franklin County. Sources: Wikipedia; Hometown Album, Newell Hart, editor; The Franklin County Citizen of 1912, 1915, 1918.)

Early in the spring of 1915 more was written about this establishment. When one looks back thirteen years and views the phenomenal growth of this concern which was commenced by J.C. Penney in the Wyoming town of Kemmerer, one is naturally astonished because such growth could not have been accomplished without perfect unity and harmony between employer and employed. The system of the company really spells success. As fast as a man shows that he has business ability and can be trusted, he is given an interest in a store to look after There are 83 busy stores in 13 states, 12 years in business with 83 busy stores, theres a reason. You who think of saving the pennies, dimes, and dollars should consider our prices, compare our merchandise and then decide who is saving you the most money. You can buy the same goods for less money at the Golden Rule.

The Franklin County Citizen newspaper of March 11, 1915, carried this information about the owner of the growing chain of dry good stores called The Golden Rule Store, among the host of dry goods buyers visiting New York (City) during the present import season is Mr. J.C. Penney of Kemmerer, Wyo., head of an organization unique in the retail trade. Within the short space of ten years, with the assistance of able lieutenants he has established in the intermountain country a chain of thirty-three busy stores whose annual sales aggregate over one and three-quarter millions dollars.

All this has been accomplished so quietly that the organization has escaped the notice of many in the dry goods trade There has been no beating of drums or blowing of trumpets as store after store, each store an added link, has been joined to the lengthening chain which now includes towns in seven states within its widening circle.

When the representative of Dry Goods called at the hotel to meet the head of this organization he was surprised to find Mr. Penney not the typical aggressive Westerner he had pictured, but a quiet, reserved man, kindly in manner, but diffident in speech, loth to say anything of himself or his remarkable achievements as a merchant.

The questions he had for Mr. Penney were threefold: how the business had been built, what was the cardinal principle of the organization, and thirdly, why were the stores known as The Golden Rule Stores.

Penney gave credit to the growth and success of the stores to his assistants, praising their loyal cooperation and untiring efforts. One man alone can do very little, but when a number of men, actuated by the same principles work together much can be accomplished They are all men of the highest moral character, and character is a better asset than money.

Mr. Penney determined to put into practice the principle of the Golden Rule when he conducted his business. The stores were cooperatives; the manager in charge had a direct interest in the store. It increases the efficiency of each manager and made him responsible for the success of the store Every customer, regardless of age or sex must receive the same careful consideration. There is but one price to all, and no deviation from this rule is permitted under any circumstances. All transactions were for cash, eliminating much of the expenses accruing from the credit system.

One man alone can do very little, but when a number of men, actuated by the same principles work together much can be accomplished They are all men of the highest moral character, and character is a better asset than money.

- J.C. Penney

On July 4, 1918, there appeared a half page ad in the Citizen informing the public of a change taking place in this chain of stores. To protect the public against deception and to maintain our own identity and reputation for honest methods we take this opportunity to announce to our friends whom we number by the hundreds in Preston, beginning July 1st, our store in Preston will be known only by our incorporated name: J.C. Penney Company.

They stated the reasons why the change was made in the name. Sixteen years ago the founder of this present organization of 197 stores, inspired with the ideal that business could and should be conducted upon the true spirit of the Golden Rule, and being a firm believer in the justice of that familiar adage, As ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise, Mr. Penney determined to operate his first and subsequent stores on that policy The Golden Rule. To symbolize that intention, he called these stores Golden Rule Stores, as an ever present declaration of the square deal policy that would be pursued within those stores. Constant adherence to those methods brought rapid success and likewise imitators.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, yet usually only the name was imitated and the underlying or basic principles were not adopted by those same imitators, who, in some instances, purposely confused the minds of the public The J.C. Penney Company will always be known as the store that sells at one price to everybody, and you and we have the satisfaction of knowing that the name J.C. Penney Company has been placed over our door to protect you against any form of deceit that unscrupulous dealers might inflict upon you.

Preston continued to have a J.C. Penney store for many years. It closed its doors near the end of the 20th century. Later the Penney building housed the Carter Department Store, then it became Bobs Mart and True Value. No longer a store in the spot that was once J.C. Penney, now it is the Dynamics Studios headquarters.

Profiting from the Golden Rule – Valdosta Daily Times

Posted: July 4, 2017 at 8:44 am

Hopefully, we dont treat people well just so they will treat us kindly in return. We should treat everyone we meet with dignity, respect and kindness because it is the right thing to do. We want to treat others as wed like to be treated.

That is what the Golden Rule tells us to do.

I love this quote from Mother Teresa, Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of Gods kindness.

But it is sometimes helpful to believe that what goes around comes around. That belief can make doing the hard but right things a little easier.

Today, I want to show how doing the right thing as an organization is the most profitable thing you can do. I also want to show you can measure how well your organization is following the Golden Rule.

How well you and your organization live out the Golden Rule is reflected in your reputation. We all want to be treated with honor and respect. Being treated with honor and respect makes us happy, so happy we want to tell other people about the experience.

Think about the last time you received amazing service. Did it make you happy? Did you tell others about your experience?

When we recommend a company or service were signaling our trust that our friends will be treated the same. Recommendations are also an indicator of how customers feel about their relationship with a company.

When customers feel so well treated they enthusiastically recommend a company to friends, they are promoters. When customers are treated so badly they recommend avoiding a company, they are detractors. The idea of promoters and detractors is the foundation of the Net Promoter Score.

What is the Net Promoter Score? It is a lot of things. First, it is my go-to survey tool for customers and employees. Second, it is the brainchild of Fred Reichheld. Reichheld is a Fellow at Bain & Company and founder of their Loyalty Practice. He has spent most of his professional life quantifying the link between customer loyalty and profits.

The Net Promoter Score focuses the entire organization on generating promoters, who buy more, stay longer, refer friends and are less price sensitive. It also helps minimize the number of costly detractors, who are not afraid to loudly proclaim the organizations deficiencies.

Reichhelds research has found that across multiple industries, the company with the leading Net Promoter Score grew more than twice as fast as their competitors.

Are you ready to grow twice as fast as your competitors? Well explain how to do it in future columns.

Curt Fowler is an organizational growth expert and president of Fowler & Company, a business advisory firm dedicated to helping leaders create and achieve a compelling vision for their organization. He has an MBA in strategy and entrepreneurship from the Kellogg School, is a CPA, and a pretty good guy as defined by his wife and four children.

WWE News: Kurt Angle breaks WWE’s golden rule – Sportskeeda

Posted: at 8:44 am

Whats the story?

As seen on Twitter, WWE superstar and Hall of Famer Kurt Angle broke one of WWEs golden rules by mentioning the name of former wrestler Chris Benoit. The incident occurred while Angle was giving a press release regarding his involvement in the upcoming WWE 2K18 video game.

Chris Benoit has been a taboo name in WWE for many years now, ever since he murdered his wife and son before killing himself back in the summer of 2007. The former World Heavyweight Champion has barely ever been mentioned on WWE television since that fateful weekend, and understandably so given the nature of his crimes.

As you can see in the following tweet, Angle lists Benoit alongside a string of other top superstars when talking about some of his greatest matches. Whether or not WWE has reprimanded Kurt in any way remains to be seen, but given his position in the company, we cant imagine that itll be anything more than a quick telling off.

Also read: 5 men who could face Kurt Angle in his final match

The focus will continue to shift towards the video game in the coming weeks and months, with WWE promoting it to the high heavens as they always tend to do. It seems likely that this issue will be swept under the rug completely, with all future mentioning of Benoits name coming courtesy of his matches on the WWE Network instead of anything else.

Its a shame that were at the point where a wrestler even saying Chris name is considered illegal by the company because recognising some of the great matches he had should be separated from what he actually did. Obviously, we dont condone his actions or putting him in the Hall of Fame, but erasing certain portions of history will only serve to aggravate the fans further.
