Five people have been charged by federal authorities for allegedly operating an illegal gambling business with suspected ties to the Lucchese crime family over the course of at least 15 years.

The U.S. Department of Justice made the announcement Wednesday via press release.

An indictment unsealed in a Brooklyn federal court states four of the defendants were arrested at their residences in the New York area, and a fifth was arrested in West Palm Beach, Florida.

The Justice Department alleges that one person arrested in the scheme, 57-year-old Anthony Villani, is a "Lucchese crime family solider."

"As alleged, this conduct demonstrates how members of La Cosa Nostra continue to engage in illegal gambling operations and money laundering money-marking schemes that lead to threats of violence against anyone who stands in their way and has resulted in millions of dollars in profits to the Lucchese crime family," stated United States Attorney Breon Peace. "These charges illustrate this Offices continued commitment to rooting La Cosa Nostra out of New York."

James Coumoutsos, 59; Dennis Filizzola, 58; Michael Praino, 44; and Louis Tucci, Jr., 59, are the other four defendants in the scheme.

Villani is facing racketeering in connection with participation in various criminal schemes, including illegal gambling, money laundering and attempted extortion charges for his alleged connection to a fraudulent online gambling enterprise called Rhino Sports.

Records obtained from the gambling businesss website indicated that Villanis illegal gambling operation regularly took bets from between 400 and 1,300 bettors each week, most of whom were based in New York City and the metropolitan area. Federal authorities have charged five people with operating an illegal and long-established gambling business with suspected ties to the Lucchese crime family, the U.S. Department of Justice announced on Wednesday. The charges were outlined in an indictment that was unsealed in Brooklyn federal court, as four defendants were arrested at their homes in New York, and another in West Palm Beach, Florida.

In a news release, the Justice Department alleged that one person arrested in the scheme, identified as 57-year-old Anthony Villani, is a direct associate of the notorious Mafia clan that has historically played a significant part in New York's organized crime. Also charged in the scheme are James Coumoutsos, 59; Dennis Filizzola, 58; Michael Praino, 44; and Louis Tucci, Jr., 59, according to the Justice Department. Coumoutsos, Praino and Tucci were also identified by their nicknames "Quick," "Platinum" and "Tooch," respectively.

Villani is facing racketeering charges for illegal gambling, money laundering and attempted extortion for his alleged connection to a fraudulent online gambling enterprise called Rhino Sports, which, authorities said, collected illegal sports bets and reaped millions in profits over the course of at least 15 years. Allegedly operated under the protection of the Lucchese family, the site used web hosting servers based in Costa Rica and regularly accepted between 400 and 1,300 bets per week. It employed dozens of bookmakers to pay and collect winnings in cash, according to the Justice Department.

Villani is accused of overseeing what the department describes as a "large-scale" illegal scheme at the helm of Rhino Sports' business dealings. He allegedly contracted Filizzola and Tucci as runners while "regularly" employing members of prominent Italian-American crime families, including the Lucchese family, to work as bookmakers.

The Justice Department alleged that Villani himself received more than $1 million annually from Rhino Sports. When federal agents searched his residences in 2020 during a probe, they recovered more than $400,000 in cash as well as brass knuckles and gambling ledgers.

"As alleged, this conduct demonstrates how members of La Cosa Nostra continue to engage in illegal gambling operations and money laundering money-marking schemes that lead to threats of violence against anyone who stands in their way and has resulted in millions of dollars in profits to the Luchese crime family," said U.S. Attorney Breon Peace in a statement included in the Justice Department's Wednesday announcement. "These charges illustrate this Office's continued commitment to rooting La Cosa Nostra out of New York."

La Costa Nostra refers to an organized crime syndicate composed of several "families" known for their associations with the Sicilian mafia. Back in August, nine people were arrested and charged for their alleged connections to a mob-affiliated illegal gambling circuit.

UK Gambling Reform Bill Reportedly On Its Way to the Trash Can – Casino.Org News

Posted: at 9:09 am

Posted on: September 19, 2022, 06:58h.

Last updated on: September 19, 2022, 11:22h.

Those calling for gambling reform in the UK arent going to be happy with the latest development. As new Prime Minister Liz Truss continues to put her house in order, the long-anticipated update to the countrys gambling laws might never arrive.

The UK government spent the past few years reviewing and updating its gambling regulations. It was to present its gambling white paper a year ago before delaying its publication several times.

Eventually, it appeared as though the government would unveil its plans sometime this month. But that was before Boris Johnson handed over the keys to the castle to Truss. The Guardian reports that the government is scrapping a number of proposed legislative changes, one of which is gambling reform.

The media outlet confirmed that Truss and her new cabinet are dumping energy reform and a new bill of rights. At the same time, an online harms bill, animal welfare, and gambling reform could be coming off the table as well.

There had already been a feeling that gambling reform wasnt going to be a priority as the new government settles into place. Comments made by Truss as she continues to shake up the upper and lower ranks of the UKs legislative structure seem to reinforce that belief.

Governments role should not be to tell us what our tastes should be. Too often were hearing about not drinking too much, eating too many doughnuts, Truss said.

The Conservative Party leader doesnt want the government to be in charge of running peoples lives. She states that it is not responsible for telling everyone how to think or act, and opts for a softer approach to leading the country.

Truss will also reportedly scrap an obesity bill for the same reason. She may erase a ban on how stores can display sugary products, as well as reinstate advertising for junk food during the day. Currently, there is a prohibition on the advertising of certain products before 9 pm.

Undoubtedly, the legislative updates are going to cause friction. Another change thats sure to spark debate is the recent discussion about the removal of a cap on the amount of bonuses bankers can receive.

This is a recommendation of Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng that has, reportedly, received support from Truss. The proposal, according to Kwarteng, is to ensure the UK can attract more talented financial banking experts.

These changes dont mean that reforms arent coming. For example, Truss scrapped the energy bill because of some of the language it included. At the same time, she announced that shes allocating 150 billion (US$170 billion) to address the UKs energy crisis.

What remains unclear is where the country is headed in terms of gambling reform. Even if it scraps the white paper, it isnt likely to drop the subject entirely. The Betting and Gaming Council didnt respond to a request for input.

Whats more likely, according to some, is a do-over from scratch that would include current analysis and research, along with more input from the gaming industry. Under voluntary responsible gambling programs, the self-governing ecosystem has reduced the percentage of problem gambling, according to the UK Gambling Commission.

The UKs gambling ecosystem, including casinos and sports betting venues, shut down on Monday in honor of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. Some venues, such as Grosvenor, will open in the evening.

Jdigital: "Spain’s online gambling ecosystem is losing its appeal due to tougher restrictions" – Yogonet International

Posted: at 9:09 am

The Spanish Digital Gaming Association (Jdigital) analyzed the second quarter report on the financial situation of online gaming in the country, published by the General Directorate of Gaming Regulation (DGOJ), and stated that its results "show the negative period that the industry is going through."

Jdigital's CEO, Jorge Hinojosa, said in a statement that "the latest results made public by the DGOJ are devastating." "The online gaming ecosystem in our country is losing appeal for operators due to the tougher restrictions it is experiencing. Companies in the sector feel that they do not have stable guarantees that allow them to grow in our country," he pointed out.

It should be noted that, according to the Q2 2022 report, Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR) was EUR 203.95 million, about $205.45 million. This amount represents a decrease of -0.29% compared to the previous quarter and a year-over-year decrease of -5.55%.

The report also detailed that the monthly average of active gaming accounts is 996,149, "which implies a decrease of -2.42% compared to the previous quarter and a positive annual variation of 0.3%". "The monthly average of new accounts is 146,057 users, with a quarterly decrease of -5.45% and -25.99% annual rate," the association added.

In this regard, Hinojosa stated that "the most worrying thing is that the decrease in the turnover of licensed operators opens the door to the growth of illegal gambling, exposing users to an unregulated and unprotected game."

Jdigital pointed out that the reported figures emphasize "the feeling of instability and uncertainty that already prevailed in the industry, especially after the approval of the Royal Decree on Commercial Communications of Gambling Activities," which prohibited the advertising of gambling past the early hours of the morning.

Despite this situation, the association pointed out that, "after a few months marked by a progressive slowdown in the gaming sector and facing a complex outlook for the coming months, the Association emphasizes its commitment to safe and responsible gaming and to promote a sustainable development of the industry."

Along these lines, Jdigital stressed that "the best ally for the DGOJ is the industry itself.""We believe that it is more necessary than ever to work together with the regulator to create a solid market that allows operators to grow and protects users, especially the most vulnerable," he concluded.

NFL Week 2 gambling preview: Various game picks plus the Cowboys corner – Blogging The Boys

Posted: at 9:09 am

Week 2 of the regular season has arrived.

Everyone likes to make money, right? So before you sit down and take in the action this weekend, take a look at our gambling preview for Week 2. (All odds via DraftKings Sportsbook)

Let us know your best bet for this weeks action in the comments section.

Going back to the well here and betting on the Ravens for the second straight week. Baltimore handily took care of the Jets last week, covering the 6.5 and walking away with a 24-9 victory. This week they face a much bigger test as they host the 1-0 Miami Dolphins. While the Dolphins did beat New England last Sunday 20-7, they didnt look great doing it. Tua Tagovailoa was sacked three times and Miami managed just 2.8 YPC on the ground. This week, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins offense will struggle against a much more capable Ravens defense. Lamar Jackson tosses two touchdown passes and Baltimores defense picks off Tua twice, leading the Ravens to a six-point victory.

Betting on the Colts after they tied with the lowly Houston Texans last week may sound like a bad idea, but its important to not overreact to any outcome in Week 1. Indy outgained Houston in that game 517 to 299 and would have come away with a win if Rodrigo Blankenship didnt miss a game-winning field goal attempt. Matt Ryan looked much better in the second half, and Jonathan Taylor ran for 161 yards and averaged 5.2 Y/A. The Colts are simply a much better team than the Jaguars, and this is a prime spot for them to bounce back in a big way after a disappointing Week 1. Dont overreact to one game, take the Colts to cover the 3 on the road.

This is another game where not overreacting to Week 1 is important. The Packers got dominated by the Vikings last Sunday. Minnesota held Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay offense in check and moved the ball fairly easily against the Packers highly-touted defense. The Packers need a win to get themselves back on track, and they have the perfect opponent coming into town in the Chicago Bears. Dating back to 2016, the Packers have won 11 of their last 12 games against the Bears. In their last four meetings, Green Bay has won by scores of 45 to 30, 24 to 14, 35 to 16, and 41 to 25. The Packers simply own the Bears and this is a perfect soft landing spot for Green Bay after the tough Week 1. Dont be scared off by the high spread, take the Packers to cover on Sunday night.

Were adding an extra team this week to our parlay to make it a four-teamer. The Browns, Rams, and Packers all have extremely favorable matchups at home this weekend. All three teams easily could cover their respective spreads and should have no problem winning the game outright. The Vikings are the tricky ones, but I like their matchup against the Eagles on Monday night. Philly gave up 35 points to the Lions last weekend, so Minnesota should keep things close.

While I dont have much confidence that the Cowboys can outright win this game, I do see them keeping it close in the first half. Dallas defense should be able to generate some pressure on Joe Burrow and potentially force him into an early turnover or two. Throughout the course of this game, the Bengals will show they are the better team and pull away, but the Cowboys keeping it competitive early on. Dallas covers the +5 in the first half but ultimately does not cover the +7.5 at the end of the game.
