Gambling Stock Roundup: Macau Sales Rise Again in January, Nevada Records a Drop in December – Yahoo Finance

Posted: February 6, 2017 at 4:02 pm

Last week was quite eventful for the gambling industry with revenues for January rising marginally in Macau. Though this marked the sixth consecutive month of growth, following the extended slump of over two years, the slow improvement signifies that the recovery might not be that smooth.

On the other hand, the Nevada Gaming Control Board announced a decrease in revenues in the region in December.

In a separate development, Penn National Gaming Inc. PENN posted mixed fourth-quarter and full-year 2016 results. Though earnings compared favorably with Zacks Consensus Estimate, revenues missed the mark.

Gaming Industry 5YR % Return

Recap of the Weeks Most Important Stories

1. Gross gaming revenues for January rose 3.1% on a yearly basis to approximately $2.4 billion or 19.3 billion patacas, per the Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau. This marked the sixth successive month of gains, thereby continuing the revival in Macau.

However, the rise was below the 8% increase recorded in Dec 2016 and the median estimate of an 8.5% gain by Bloomberg analysts. New resorts continue to attract tourists and leisure gamblers, giving a boost to revenues. However, casino operators are bearing the brunt of cannibalization effect with the latest properties drawing in crowds at the expense of existing ones. Moreover, the January figures indicate that the Chinese New Year holidays, which began late last month, will not be as big of a boon as anticipated.

Notably, a tough operating environment in Macao weighed on the stock in 2015 and for the most part of 2016. Notably, the crackdown on corruption in China compelled Macau officials to impose restrictions on high rollers to stop billions of dollars from being siphoned off illegally from mainland China to Macau.

Consequently, this lowered footfall at local casinos. A slowdown in China, tighter visa policies, political unrest and a smoking ban on mass market gaming floors compounded the woes. In fact, the anti-graft corruption drive undertaken by the Chinese government is still keeping VIP gamblers at bay.

Nonetheless, efforts undertaken by Macau operators to revive revenues by wooing tourists and recreational gamblers with family-friendly resorts and more non-gaming facilities have started yielding results as evident from gambling revenue growth in the past six months. Thus, though the worst may be over but the slow progress suggests that Macaus recovery is going to be quite volatile and choppy.

2. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Nevada gambling revenues dropped 2.7% in Dec 2016 from the year-ago period to nearly $956.1 million. The decline follows the fall in November. More specifically, casino revenues in the Las Vegas Strip which accounts for more than half of Nevadas total revenue were down 1.7% year over year in the month. However, Reno recorded a 14.1% rise in casino revenues.

3. Penn National Gaming posted fourth-quarter 2016 earnings of 5 cents, which compared favorably with Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 14 cents. Meanwhile, the figure also improved over the year-ago quarters loss of 11 cents on the back of higher revenues. Moreover, results were significantly better than managements expectation of a loss of 15 cents.

Net revenue of $742.9 million increased 1.2% year over year due to a rise in revenues at South/West, Midwest and Other segments, partially offset by a decline in the Northeast segment. However, this Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) company missed the consensus mark by a mere 0.07% and also fell slightly short of the managements guidance.

Real Money Online Gambling

When seeking outa real money online casino to open an account with, it is important to do your due diligence. This should always begin by first verifying where the casino is licensed and regulated andwhat software platform is being used to power the games.Holding a license through a reputable gaming jurisdiction ensures the software has been audited for fairness and that the operator is in good standing, which from a players perspective, means you are getting a fair hand andbeing paid on time.

The first place to look when verifying this information is on the website of the casino itself. Generally, this will be a link or logo at the footer of the website. An Random Number Generator (RNG) Certificate should also be posted (again, often found at the footer of the website or on a standalone accreditation page). If this information is not readily available, i.e. the casino is lacking in transparency, it is advised to stay clear from opening a real money online gambling account.

Hard Rock Casino proposal announced for Meadowlands [video …

Posted: December 26, 2016 at 3:20 pm

A proposed Hard Rock casino that was announced for the Meadowlands Racetrack site on Wednesday carried with it considerable support from North Jersey lawmakers for placing a statewide referendum on the November ballot to clear the way for its construction.

michael karas/staff photographer

From left, Meadowlands Racetrack operator Jeff Gural and Hard Rock casino operator Jim Allen look on as state Sen. Paul Sarlo speaks on Wednesday, June 3, 2015.

Hard Rocks chief executive, Jim Allen, said the $1 billion casino would feature 5,000 slot machines, more than 200 table games, and 12 to 15 restaurants, and that it could open as soon as soon as the summer or early fall of 2016. Meanwhile, former Reebok Chief Executive Paul Fireman has proposed a $4 billion casino, hotel, spa and retail project adjacent to his Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City that he said would take up to four years to complete.

Neither project could be built unless lawmakers elect to let voters decide whether to end Atlantic Citys nearly four-decade-old casino monopoly and thereby allow casinos to be built in North Jersey to compete with gambling palaces in Pennsylvania and New York State. But Sweeney a Gloucester County Democrat whose backing of a statewide referendum would be crucial last month questioned whether it would be wiser to postpone a vote to allow North Jersey casinos until November 2016 based on an expected low turnout this fall.

The unveiling of plans for a Meadowlands casino on Wednesday came with only weeks to spare before time runs out on starting the process of approving a question for the Nov. 3 ballot. Nearly a dozen North Jersey elected officials who attended the Hard Rock announcement insisted in impassioned speeches that the vote should happen this year. Sweeney did not attend, and a spokesman declined to comment.

Allen and the tracks operator, Jeff Gural, reiterated that some of the tax revenues from the new casino would aid the economic recovery of Atlantic City, where a four of 12 casinos have closed in the last 18 months. Allen added that because Hard Rock has sites in 64 countries, a Hard Rock Meadowlands casino complete with a New Jersey Music Hall of Fame would attract many of the millions of foreign tourists who visit Manhattan annually.

The announcement that an estimated 2,360 jobs would be created during construction drew cheers from laborers who attended the press conference at the tracks Victory Sports Bar. The casino also would create 5,000 permanent jobs, officials said.

This is not a fight between North Jersey and South Jersey, Gural said. Were fighting New York and Pennsylvania we need to bring back the people in northern New Jersey who now travel to those casinos.

Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, D-Essex, said Sweeney would need to be won over and that the ballot question would need to be drafted in the next 30 days.

I dont understand why we would wait another year, or two years New Jersey has a revenue problem, said Jim Kirkos, the president of the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce. Kirkos has backed new development including a casino at the Meadowlands Sports Complex since 2010.

Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, D-Secaucus; state Sens. Paul Sarlo, D-Wood-Ridge, Loretta Weinberg, D-Teaneck and Ray Lesniak, D-Essex; and Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco were among the elected officials who endorsed the Hard Rock plan on Wednesday.

We will work together that this moves ahead the Meadowlands is the place for a casino in North Jersey, Weinberg said to applause from the crowd.

Weinberg said she would support building only one North Jersey casino, at the Meadowlands, while Sarlo and Lesniak support two North Jersey casinos and Caputo is backing up to three casinos in Bergen, Hudson and Essex counties.

But all of the politicians said they would be able to compromise on a plan to bring the issue to voters in November.

Im concerned that if we dont do it now, it will never get done, Lesniak said.

Gural said he met with the owners of the Giants and Jets several months ago and does not expect the NFL teams to oppose a Meadowlands casino. Gural also told the teams that, if a casino is built, he would pay to have the old grandstand adjacent to MetLife Stadium demolished and that the teams could then use that property for additional parking.

The new facility would be built to the left side of the main entrance of the racetracks new $100 million grandstand, which included a 16 percent equity stake by Hard Rock. Allen said the two buildings eventually would be connected.

Gural estimated that the state could collect $400 million in tax revenues at a rate of 55 percent almost double what the entire Atlantic City casino industry pays at its 8 percent rate if no more than two casino licenses are issued.

This was a show of force today, because everyone recognizes that this is the year to put it on the ballot, said Gural, who added that he and Allen may spend $10 million to $20 million on advertising this summer and fall to try to get a referendum passed. Gural estimated that it would cost three times as much to mount a similar campaign in 2016, a presidential election year when advertising would be more expensive.

I dont think that [Sweeney] wants to position himself as being the only obstacle to a project of this magnitude, Gural said.

The tax rate at the proposed 20-acre Jersey City casino complex likely would be far lower than at the Meadowlands, due to the cost of the investment and the greater number of permanent jobs that would be created at the Hudson County facility that like the private Liberty National Golf Club would cater to a highly affluent clientele.

Five of the seven remaining casinos in Atlantic City offer online casinos with a total of 20 domain names between them. Online players must be within the state's borders to log on or play.

When the only commercial casinos in the eastern United States were located in Atlantic City, properties there did quite well and the planned economic benefits to the seashore city were manifold. However with the eventual market saturation of dozens of "racinos" and state supplied lottery casinos nearby in New York and elsewhere, along with the great recession, the casino's fortunes faded. For an in-depth and up-to-date guide, including history, news, statistics and the current state of the industry in the Boardwalk City, please see our Atlantic City Gambling Guide.

At their peak in 2006, Atlantic City casinos were powerful economic engines. But the numbers have gone downhill since then. At the beginning of 2014 there were 12 casinos in operation. Four casinos closed that year, and another in 2016. The Atlantic Club, Trump Plaza, Showboat, and Revel closed in 2014. Carl Icahn closed Trump Taj Mahal in 2016. The Revel may reopen as TEN Atlantic City in early 2017. The surviving casinos are doing well with less competition. Online gambling revenues are also making a slow but steady climb in AC.

Live horse racing in New Jersey occurs at three locations - Freehold Raceway (standardbred only) Monmouth Park (thoroughbred only) and Meadowland Racetrack (thoroughbred and standardbred). Atlantic City Racecourse closed in early 2015.

Each of the live racing facilities also has daily simulcast race betting. Borgata is the only casino left to offer simulcasting and a race book. Caesars closed theirs in 2015. So expect big crowds fighting for one of the 105 seats in Borgata's simulcast room on big race days like the Kentucky Derby.

Six off-track betting or Off Track Wagering (OTW) facilities are licenced including Favorites at Tom's River and Winners Bayonne.

As the state struggles to come to terms with their new place in the Eastern gambling landscape, plans are in the works for a Hard Rock Casino to open at Meadowlands, and for a $5 billion casino in Jersey City. The election November 8, 2016, will determine if that's possible when voters say yes or no to Question 1: "Do you approve amending the Constitution to permit casino gambling in two additional counties in this State? At present, casino gambling is allowed only in Atlantic City in Atlantic County. Only one casino in each of the two counties would be permitted. Each casino is to be located in a town that is at least 72 miles from Atlantic City. The amendment would allow certain persons to apply first for a casino license."

'Certain Persons' are existing Atlantic City casino license holders who would have 6 months to present plans before anyone else got a chance to bid.

Although the days of being the number two casino town in the world are over, Atlantic City can not be counted out and still offers visitors a full range of gambling venues ranging from the new "locals" favorite Resorts Casino Hotel to the Borgata, Golden Nugget, Tropicana, Caesar's, Harrah's or Bally's.

Horse racing is alive and well with some of the best tracks in the country, and online gambling for those playing from within the state's borders offers exciting opportunities. If you are playing from your hotel room at, say,Caesars Atlantic City Hotel & Casino, you can simply walk to the cashier's cage and collect your online winnings. Now that beats asking for an account flush, or waiting out a pending period at most online casinos!
