Louisiana’s gambling industry shutdown comes with big costs – WWLTV.com

Posted: April 24, 2020 at 3:01 pm

LAKE CHARLES, La. Lake Charles attracts visitors to its restaurants, events and outdoor adventures, but its luxury casino resorts dominate the city's hospitality and tourism industry.

COVID-19 has shuttered these money-making machines for seven weeks, leaving the booming Lake Charles economically filled with uncertainties.

Tye Robinson, a bellhop at Golden Nugget Lake Charles, collected his last tips from Golden Nugget guests over a month ago.

"I would get a lot of tips, so I would use my cash on my bills and daily necessities," he said.

Robinson was working at the casino when he learned of the closure due to COVID-19.

I found out the day before we shut the operations down, and I found out from a news report, he said. It was news to me.

Robinson and his co-workers lived in uncertainty for a week before the casino informed employees. Robinson received one months pay and immediately filed an unemployment claim.

"I'm thankful for unemployment for saving me," he said.

While the closing of the casino industry is impacting his life, it also is causing serious economic problems for the rest of the community and the state.

Gaming operations in the Lake Charles area amassed over $906 million in revenue in 2018, distributing over $36 million throughout Calcasieu Parish, according to a KPLC-TV report. The hospitality and tourism industry ranks No. 2 behind the petrochemical industry as an economic driver in the area.

"You know, our culture is something that people travel from around the world to come and see, so we get a lot of this, said R.B. Smith, vice president of business and workforce development at the Southwest Louisiana Economic Development Alliance.

Riverboat, land-based, video gaming and racetrack casinos in Shreveport, East Baton Rouge Parish, New Orleans and other cities in Louisiana generated over $3 billion in net revenue with over $700 million directly benefiting state government, according to the 2019 Louisiana Gaming Control Board Report.

Gambling normally tops even the oil and gas industry in its contribution to state revenue, and both industries have been severely hurt by the virus, threatening local and state budgets.

In Lake Charles, gaming typically brings in over a billion dollars a year from visitors from Houston alone. However, with the Louisiana-Texas border blocked, and the casinos closed, the businesses are taking a punch.

"Visit Lake Charles is currently predicting an economic loss in excess of $500 million from the tourism economy in 2020, said Kyle Edmiston, chief executive of the local visitors bureau. This is a highly fluid prediction as it is completely dependent on when tourism businesses are allowed to reopen and at what levels the crowds and attendance are mandated by executive order."

The empty parking lots of hotels within the area show their losses with only an 18 percent occupancy rate. At this time last year, the rate was 73 percent.

"There is absolutely a ripple effect on all businesses in the travel and tourism sector with those properties remaining closed for approximately seven weeks, said Edmiston. It is still too early to predict permanent closures based on the information that is currently available."

The dips in these revenues will also hurt the development plans of the City of Lake Charles.

The lack of revenue will not affect essential city projects, such as repairing underground sewer works. However, the overall impact depends on when and how the economy opens up again.

"Long-term, I think we're going to be all right, Smith said. Short term again, I think everything's on hold until we see it, when we can open the economy back up.

As Lake Charles anxiously waits for the death of the virus and the resurrection of the economy, Robinson is eager to return to work.

"I plan on going back after all of this is over because it is a very good job, and I do enjoy working, he said. I just want this virus to end."

Moody Ratings Says More Gambling Firms Will Merge Due To COVID-19 – – Legal Gambling News

Posted: at 3:01 pm

The prominent ratings agency Moodys foresees a series of gambling firm mergers on the horizon, due to the uncertainty caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic: one such merger is the blockbuster deal between the mammoth companies Flutter Entertainment and the Stars Group. Moodys evaluates the ability of different businesses to pay their debts.

The Irish giant Flutter owner of the Paddy Power brand received approval from their shareholders to consolidate resources with the Stars Group, based in Toronto. All five resolutions related to the merger received a resounding approval from its investors. Their merger will result in an online gambling behemoth with at least 10 million players worldwide.

The Stars Group owns online poker giant PokerStars, as well as Skybet and Full Tilt Poker. Their shareholders are expected to vote on the Flutter deal within the week.

CityNews Toronto

Moodys current rating for the Stars Group is B2 stable, which means that it is a high credit risk. The Stars Groups net debt is estimated to be around 4 billion. Moodys has no rating for Flutter. The Irish firm is said not to have any glaring liabilities, with a net debt of just 270 million. Based in Clonskeagh, Dublin, Flutter owns Fanduel and Betfair, as well as Sportsbet in Australia.

Despite the massive losses accrued by the gambling industry due to the suspension of major sporting events around the world, both Flutter and the Stars Group have announced that they will push through with their merger.

According to Jeanine Arnold and Florent Egonneau, analysts from Moodys, the desire for consolidation will likely escalate as soon as COVID-19 slows down, as gambling firms look to greater scale and online revenues to bolster their portfolios.

Arnold and Egonneau stated that companies with robust balance sheets will likely seek out companies with depressed valuations, and look to build their market share via takeovers.

Moodys also assessed a number of European firms, such as Spains Sociedad Limitada and Codere and Tackle Group in Germany, stating that they could survive a two month lockdown, but would have difficulty with longer periods. GVC, which owns Ladbrokes, also operates a series of bookmakers and online bets in Ireland, have begun to see their players migrate to casino games and poker as a result of no sports wagering opportunities.

NFL Draft is big night for sports gambling, and mock drafts helped set the lines – The Athletic

Posted: at 3:01 pm

Mock drafts are the offseason catnip of the NFL offseason: churned out by the hundreds, if not thousands to feed the insatiable hunger for any football news, with plenty of disclaimers for the writers not to take them too seriously. And most observers dont.

But with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell shortly to start the draft from his basement in Bronxville, N.Y., there is one industry that not only does not scoff at the mocks, but needs them: sports gambling, which is seeing a record volume bet on the draft.

If somebody sees a Mel Kiper mock that says X, Y or Z, then thats gonna probably move betting action, said Dustin Gouker, an analyst for PlayUSA Network and LegalSportsReport.com. I think the oddsmakers know that thats going to result in maybe not sharp moves, but certainly casual bettors who are following along seeing a Mel Kiper draft that says, This persons gonna be drafted here. Thats going to...

The Paradox of Online Gambling in the USA – Easy Reader News

Posted: at 3:01 pm

Added on April 20, 2020Judy Rae

There are thousands of land-based casinos in the USA. They are extremely popular because there is no better way to spend free time than to dive into the world of luck, risk, and entertainment. With the development of the virtual world, more and more providers decide to go online. Youll probably agree that its more convenient playing casino games at home than to drive hundreds of miles to a land-based venue.

However, everythings difficult with online gambling. Recently, the US Justice Department decided to increase internet gambling prohibition. The Wire Act forbids any internet gambling, which includes interstate transactions. So what is the difference between land-based and online casinos? Why the first is praised and the second prosecuted? Let us discuss the modern state of affairs in the gambling industry and try to find a solution that will satisfy both the gamblers and authorities.

Modern State of Affairs

It is better to start with dry facts and to enumerate the federal laws, which govern online gambling (in case you want to dive deeper into the subject):

Fraud by wire;

Mail fraud: attempt and conspiracy;

Broadcasting lottery information;

Transmission of wagering.

All the above make sure that players cant make any transactions inside an online casino, as well as to play on a website located in the US. But the bad news is over.

There is actually no federal law that prohibits playing online: placing a bet on the Internet is completely legal. The only case when a person was prosecuted was in North Dakota in 2003. Jeffrey Trauman has paid $500 for winning $100,000 in sports betting. The sites, which are located somewhere abroad are completely legal. So you just need to read independent reviews of USA friendly online casinos, check where they are based, and start playing. Even if you are located in the US, just pick a gambling website that is not situated on the American soil.

Another good news is that Google has recently updated its games policy to allow operators to create adverts through the platform in Colombia, Nigeria, and Kenya, as well as in several US states. This means that sports betting ads on Google will be allowed in Iowa, Montana, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Indiana.

And if you want to remain on the safe side without any fear of being caught, we recommend using cryptocurrency as a payment method. While it is prohibited in America to use banking transactions for gambling, the crypto market is not regulated by the governments, so choosing this payment method is legal.

Things to be done

The harsh approach to gambling on the Internet is outdated. Although morality aspects continue to prevail when anti-gambling discussions are held, legalization of gambling may be a step to the protection of US citizens and finding an additional way to replenish the treasury. Considering the experience of multiple countries abroad, creating a healthy environment for online gambling is beneficial for all participants transactions are transparent, everyones abiding the law, and it is much simpler to track players with addiction.

Luckily, despite multiple restrictions, online gambling in the US is becoming more and more popular. This niche will soon reach its peak and will require more space and recognition. We are sure that in the nearest future this industry will blossom and even the government will have to reckon with it.

Recognizing the needs of gambling sites and making this activity legal is one of the ways to attract investments and to recognize that all hobbies are important and should be taken into account.

Online gambling is already on the rise

It is obvious that traditional governmental mechanisms are not suitable for the cyber market. The power, which US officials can apply on the Internet is rather limited because there are no clear borders. So the only way to make online gambling transparent and secure is to keep up with the latest technologies, creating viable laws, and allowing anyone to join a gambling site without any restrictions.

Forbidden fruit is sweet, so players will always find a way to enjoy video slots and table games. The only question is whether the government will ensure that the process is fair and protected.

Moodys: Mergers And Acquisitions Is the Future of the Gambling Industry – GamblingNews.com

Posted: at 3:01 pm

The ongoing merger between Flutter Entertainment and The Stars Group /TSG/ has a real chance to make the decisive step towards completion this week, after on Tuesday the shareholders of the Irish-based gaming operator have almost unanimously approved the deal, and the stock holders of the Toronto-headquartered company will have their say Friday, April 24.

Though the consolidation of both businesses started way before the current health crisis to swipe away the gaming industry, among many others, Moodys considers mergers and acquisitions /M & A/ to be the prevailing model that will shape the future gaming business landscape for the post-virus era. Analysts Florent Egonneau and Jeanine Arnold expect a wave of business consolidation to happen as soon as the coronavirus-induced crisis subsides.

In its essence, the approaching to completion merger between Flutter and TSG is a tie-up between an online operator and a company that owns and operates land-based facilities. The current closure of the brick-and-mortar business, to help support the health risk mitigation measures widely adopted to combat the spreading virus, emphasized the need for diversification for this type of companies. On top of that, TSG recently reported a surge in player activity for March, the month casinos closure commenced, that would lead to an estimated 27% year-on-year jump in its Q1 revenue.

Another factor that drives the channeling of people to online gambling is the lack of sports after the collective embrace of the call to self-isolate. Consequently, that led to poor offerings from sports betting companies who even reached to some unpopular sports in an attempt to fill the gap and hold onto their clients. It turned out versatility in terms of verticals could be vital for business sustainability.

Subsequently, casino operators will look to add online gaming options to their land-based gambling type of businesses, to provide versatility in operations and resistance to adverse situations. According to the analysts from the credit ratings agency, the most efficient way to achieve that is by merging with or acquiring an already established online company.

From another point of view, the current situation placed enormous pressure on the foundation of most of the gaming companies, testing their durability and draining their reserves. Most of them started implementing cost reductions through company-wide furloughs, as well as liquidity boosts by looking for credit line extensions and debt covenant suspensions.

Some industry operators were in a better financial position before the health crisis and they will come out of it stronger compared to the others. The decrease in the stock prices for the industry will provide them with a chance to take advantage of the devaluations from the depreciated stock to increase their market shares by acquiring new assets at reduced prices, Moodys analysts continue.

Where are the tests?

Save your rhetoric. Save your excuses. Save your ridiculous blaming of some other country.

And tell us where the tests are.

Because we were supposed to have them long ago. Enough tests for anyone that needs a test gets a test.

Remember that whopper from the reality-show-racist yall decided to let run the free world? Trump told that outrageous lie while standing inside the Centers for Disease Control on March 6.

That was 45 days ago.

And still, in the state of Alabama, you have to jump through a variety of hoops to get tested at most testing locations. And once you do, except for a handful of select spots, youll be waiting up to a week to get your results back.

Alabamas population is nearly 5 million.

Weve tested, as of Sunday night, less than 50,000.

Thats less than 1 percent.

There are large portions of this state where testing is almost non-existent, and where we know that unreported cases are much higher than reported. We dont think it, we know it.

If you doubt this, let me tell you the story of Cleburne County. That small county in northeast Alabama borders the Georgia counties of Haralson and Carroll.

To date in Cleburne, a county of 15,000 people, just 50 people thats right, FIFTY! have been tested for COVID-19.

There are 12 confirmed cases out of those 50 tests and one person has died from coronavirus in that county.

Just across the state line in Georgia, the neighboring counties of Haralson and Carroll have reported more than 300 confirmed cases. The majority of those are in Carroll County, which has one of the higher infection rates (231.1 per 100,000 people) in Georgia.

Further south, Henry County has tested only 111 people. It borders the Georgia county of Early, which had the nations fourth-highest coronavirus infection rate at 1,639 per 100,000 people.

So, either this virus has tremendous respect for the imaginary lines of state borders, or the infection rates are only lower in Alabama because we havent tested well enough.

I think we know the answer.

And maybe this information void wouldnt be quite so harmful or important if we werent using it to suggest reopening the states economy.

At a press conference on Friday, Lt. Gov. Will Ainsworth presented the recommendations of the Small Business Commission which must be approved by Gov. Kay Ivey for easing back restrictions on the state.

The suggestions ranged from reasonable to oh-my-God-people-are-gonna-die-in-the-streets insane.

For example, Ainsworth recommended reopening most retail businesses but keeping in place the same 50-percent restrictions that currently govern capacity at big-box stores. Thats reasonable. After all, why should Lowes be open but your local hardware store be closed?

On the other hand, the committee also recommended allowing youth sports to resume. Because if theres one thing that always occurs among 8-year-olds in a baseball dugout, its a strict 6-foot area of personal space.

Those kids will spread the virus faster than well, faster than kids that age normally spread every kind of seasonal illness to each other and eventually to everyone else in the family.

So, kids, you can play baseball, but understand it means that you might kill mamaw and pop-pop.

At the heart of the overly aggressive timetable for the recommendations the committee wants to open most businesses, including restaurants, immediately was the persistent message that growth rates in Alabama have slowed. That the rates of infection have leveled off and that were making progress.

And maybe thats true.

But we sure as hell dont know it to be true. Not with less than 1 percent of the state tested. Not with nine counties where less than 100 people have been tested.

To date, every doctor and every scientist who has studied this virus and tracked it as it has spread have said the same things about easing back restrictions: The only way to safely do so is through mass testing and contact tracing for quarantine.

Thats the only way to prevent it from spreading like wildfire. Again.

And we cant do it.

We lack both the testing capacity and the manpower to properly trace.

We lack the first one because the Trump administration is an incompetent band of yes-men flunkies who you wouldnt trust to watch your dog overnight. If we had 50 percent of what the president promised at this point, we could probably safely reopen. But we have less than 10 percent.

We lack the manpower in Alabama because a decade of austerity rule by the ALGOP has left the Department of Public Health with a skeleton staff cut from more than 6,000 in 2010 to just more than 1,000 today. Currently, ADPH is trying to hire and train workers to do the tracing, but that isnt exactly a quick job.

But were going to push forward anyway. Because the Republican president says we should. And when it comes to advice on science stuff, the political affiliation of the person providing the advice is most important.

Even if that guy has done nothing but lie to you from the start.

CAP Issues Warning to UK Gambling Operators in Regard to Esports Betting Advertising Following GambleAware’s Report – Casino Guardian

Posted: at 3:01 pm

On April 23rd, the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) has announced two ongoing key initiatives as part of its engagement to make sure that gambling advertising in the country remains responsible. It issued a warning to all gambling operators that offer their services on the territory of the UK to be particularly cautious when advertising esports betting, as it could potentially be found appealing by young audiences.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has confirmed that the CAP has undertaken thorough measures associated with the esports betting sector in order to guarantee there are no loopholes in the gambling regulation. As a result, the regulatory body warned all gambling operating licence holders that their adverts for esports betting services must be in line with the same regulation applicable to all other forms of gambling advertising.

The warning came as a response to research that GambleAware held to learn more about the impact of gambling advertising to local customers. In addition, the CAP confirmed that it is engaged with comprehensive work around esports betting advertising in social media. As the CAP shared, this has given it a better understanding of the emerging area for gambling advertising policy, so that there are no gaps in the regulation of customer protection.

The above-mentioned research, which GambleAware published in March 2020, found that many esports gambling ads which were allegedly targetting young people. At the time when the results of the research were revealed, the largest gambling charity called for the UK gambling regulators to make sure they give operators some guidance on marketing practices in this vertical.

Now, the CAP once again reiterated its requirement for operators that if a certain advert is being promoted by a third-party account on social media, such as influencer or affiliate marketing, then it must openly reveal that it is an ad. Furthermore, it reminded that underage individuals must not be targetted by gambling advertising, either through medium or content.

The watchdog is also providing guidance for gambling operators on how to stay compliant with the advertising rules when creating marketing for esports gambling on social media. It is preparing to report fully on its response to the report of GambleAware in the autumn. Besides, it will continue the monitoring, control and enforcement actions regarding gambling advertising whenever any compliance problems are identified. The protection of most vulnerable society members would also remain one of the key priorities of the watchdog.

As far as younger audiences are concerned, the CAP said that terms and conditions of gambling operators for the accounts of individuals under 25 years of age must be clarified, even in the limited time that is normally provided on various digital channels, including social media.

Daniel Williams has started his writing career as a freelance author at a local paper media. After working there for a couple of years and writing on various topics, he found his interest for the gambling industry.

Stones Gambling Hall Claims It Has "No Duty To Gamblers" In Second Motion To Dismiss Multi-Million Dollar Cheating Lawsuit – CardPlayer.com

Posted: April 11, 2020 at 3:59 am

Stones Gambling Hall, the Sacramento-area casino that was home to one of the biggest cheating scandals in recent poker history, filed a second motion to dismiss the multi-million dollar lawsuit against the property, its tournament director Justin Kuraitis and Mike Postle, the man alleged to have cheated low-stakes live-streamed cash games out of roughly $250,000.

In its first motion to dismiss, filed in early March, the legal team for the casino argued that the casino found no evidence that indicates there was cheating in the games in question.

Its second filing takes the argument away from whether cheating took place and claimed that the casino doesnt have a responsibility to ensure safe games for the players.

Casinos do not owe a general duty of care to gamblers, Stones legal team argued in the motion. Their failure to include adequate facts establishes they cannot support their claims Plaintiffs can neither prove negligence nor fraud, they rely on innuendos and insinuations that are not substitutes for facts or law.

Not only is Stones doubling down on the idea that the accusations are without proof, but it is also distancing itself from Postle in a sense. Its argument is that even if cheating did take place, it wasnt the casinos fault. Thus, it shouldnt be held liable for any damages.

It raises the question if casinos are not legally required to provide games that are on a level playing field, what are they required to do? What exact responsibilities do casinos have to players, if providing straight games arent one of them?

After Stones filed its first motion to dismiss, the plaintiffs had a chance to amend their complaint. Mac VerStandig, the veteran gaming attorney representing the now 89 plaintiffs in the suit, filed an amended suit that added plaintiffs and specific details to the case.

The latest motion to dismiss is in response to the amended suit. And with it brings arguably the most controversial topic to the cheating allegations.

In a statement released by VerStandig to another media outlet, he expressed his dismay at the defense tactics.

We are in the process of reviewing and analyzing Stones motion, which appears to be a well-drafted document prepared by a group of excellent attorneys, said VerStandig. It is disappointing to see Stones continue to characterize my clients as essentially being sore losers, and it is disheartening to see a card room proclaim that it does not have a duty to its consumers even in a situation as egregious as this.

Which Pro Athlete Had the Worst Gambling Addiction Ever? – Sportscasting

The worlds of sports and gambling are tightly intertwined. Sports gambling is an incredibly popular past time in this country. That popularity even extends to some of the players. Of course, athletes betting on their own sports is highly discouraged, but that doesnt stop many from playing casino games or partaking in other kinds of gambling.

Throughout the years, there have been several athletes who achieved a great deal of notoriety for their gambling habits. Lets take a look at some of the worst offenders and determine which one had the worst gambling addiction ever.

Current NBA analyst and former forward Charles Barkley was known for his rebounding and scoring ability. Since retiring, however, hes shown quite the proclivity for gambling. Barkleys gambling addiction got so out of control that hes actually been sued by the Wynn Casino in Las Vegas for unpaid debts. Its estimated Barkley has lost over $30 million gambling over the course of his life.

Why did Barkley gamble so much? According to him, because he could afford to:

Its a stupid, bad habit. I have a problem But the problem is when you cant afford it. I can afford to gamble. I didnt kill myself when I lost two and half million dollars. I like to gamble and Im not going to quit.

One of Barkleys contemporaries, best friends, and the best basketball player of all time is also known for his gambling addiction. Michael Jordan is known for gambling on just about anything he can casino games, personal card games, golf matches, and he would even place bets in practice.

Whereas Barkley seemed to enjoy winning money, Jordan seemed to thrive on the sheer competition of it. Jordan was well-known for being fiercely competitive during his career and that carried over to his gambling life as well.

One crazy Jordan gambling tale comes from former Chicago Blackhawks player Jeremy Roenick. Jordan challenged Roenick to a golf match and lost. He challenged Roenick again despite having a game later that night and lost again.

Roenick jokingly said he was going to use the money hed won against Jordan to bet against the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Bulls opponent that night. Jordan bet Roenick the Bulls would win by 20 and he would score 40. He accomplished both and won the bet.

Few athletes are as closely associated with gambling as former Cincinnati Reds player and manager Pete Rose. Rose was banished from the sport in the late 80s due to betting on baseball known as the cardinal sin in most clubhouses.

For years, Rose denied he bet on the sport. He admitted to it in 2004 in an attempt to save face and get in the Hall of Fame. He has yet to gain entry into Cooperstown.

As much as the previous three individuals are known for gambling, its hard to compare them to the athlete who probably has the worst gambling addiction ever: professional golfer John Daly. Daly is a man defined by his vices such as smoking, drinking, and eating. Gambling is another one of them. Daly once told ESPN that he lost upwards of $50 million gambling.

We figured I lost about $98 million and won about $45 million gambling. So yeah I lost around $50 million.

Those are hard to comprehend numbers, even for someone as wealthy as Daly. The staggering number is the $98 million Daly lost without taking the $45 million into account hed won back. As USA Today pointed out, Daly has lost more money than most of the highest-earning golfers have made in their career.
