Man fined after he went to gambling den during circuit breaker – The New Paper

Posted: December 15, 2020 at 3:00 am

Instead of staying home during the circuit breaker period, a 24-year-old man went to an illegal gambling den.

Yesterday, Phil Ng Wei Long was fined $3,000 after he pleaded guilty to one count of leaving his home without a reasonable excuse.

On May 26, Ng left his home around 8pm and went to an illegal gambling den in Geylang to lend his friend some money.

Police officers had received a tip-off on the illegal gambling den and conducted a raid that evening.

A total of 20 people, including Ng, were detained. A table was found with a gambling mat, gambling-related paraphernalia such as playing chips and dices, and cash amounting to more than $1,600 on it.

The group had been playing a game of "See Goh Lak", also known as "456".

Deputy Public Prosecutor Chee Ee Ling said: "In total, from the time the accused left his residence to the time he was arrested, he had left his ordinary place of residence for close to one hour and 25 minutes."

She asked for a fine of $3,000, stating that Ng had been in an enclosed space with a number of people.

She added that Ng's culpability is moderate because he did not have any extenuating reason to commit the breach, and had gone out simply to loan his friend $1,000.

Three others out of the accused persons were also fined $3,000 each. The cases for the rest are pending.

YTD: 188-130-2 | MLB: 79-60 | NFL: 52-41-1 | CFB: 19-17 | January-March: 38-12-2 | Casey Olson's MMA PICKS: 188-79-5 (70% on all released betting plays)

Ben Heisler (@bennyheis)

New York Giants at Cincinnati Bengals (+6) | TOTAL: 43

Not having Joe Burrow available for the Bengals is a bummer, but Im not convinced that it means the offense will die a slow painful death at home vs the Giants.

Cincinnati throws the second most amount of times in the NFL, and with no Joe Mixon, that doesnt appear likely to change even with Brandon Allen taking over at quarterback. Allen has been discussed as a player very familiar with the system Zac Taylor runs and isnt afraid to take some chances downfield.

The Giants havent played in a game with a final total under 43 since October 18th, and it appears that their once anemic offense has finally turned the corner with Daniel Jones, Wayne Gallman, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton all healthy and playing well.

No Burrow? No problem on the over.

BEST BET: Giants @ Bengals OVER 43

Frankie Taddeo (@Frankie_Fantasy)

Kansas City Chiefs at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3.5) | TOTAL: 56

For this weeks best bet, I will turn my attention to easily the best matchup on the Week 12 slate. The defending Champion Kansas City Chiefs are 9-1 SU and 6-4 ATS and in my opinion are flying under the radar by public bettors. This could be the game that NFL fans witness the transformation in the face of the league.

Tom Brady, with his six Super Bowl rings, has been the face of the league for over the past decade. However, he is starting to show his age in 2020 and on the other side of the ball the electrifying Patrick Mahomes is playing at an elite level that has him on track for his second League MVP in just his third season as a starter. Do not underestimate that RB LeVeon Bell finally got involved with the offense last week (scoring his first TD since signing with the club) as well as the return of veteran WR Sammy Watkins this week - making this No. 1 ranked offense (32.1 points per game) even more dangerous (if that is even possible).

Tampa Bay (7-4 SU; 5-6 ATS) has been defeated soundly in two of the last three weeks by playoff bound teams (Rams and Saints) both at home. There should be no letdown for my top power ranked team with the added angle that if they desire the path to Super Bowl LV in the AFC - to go though Arrowhead for a second straight season - they can not afford to fall two games behind the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers (10-0) in the race for the top overall seed.

BEST BET: Chiefs -3.5

Corey Parson (@TheFantasyExec)

Tennessee Titans at Indianapolis Colts (-3) | TOTAL: 51.5

BEST BET: Titans @ Colts UNDER 51.5

Michael Fabiano (@Michael_Fabiano)

LA Chargers at Buffalo Bills -5 | TOTAL: 53

This weeks Chargers-Bills game features two of the leagues brightest young quarterbacks in Josh Allen and Justin Herbert. Both offenses are playing at a high level, so its no surprise that their combined games have gone over the total at least 70 percent of the time.

Additionally, Buffalo has gone over the total at nearly an 80 percent clip. With the weather projected to be clear and nearly 50 degrees at Orchard Park, Id expect the points to come fast and furious this weekend.

BEST BET: Over 53

Roy Larking (@StatsGuru6)

Los Angeles Chargers at Buffalo Bills (-5) | TOTAL: 53

Justin Herbert and the Chargers (3-7) are on the road following a 34-28 win at home against the New York Jets last week. Los Angeles snapped a three game losing streak with the victory. Josh Allen and Bills (7-3) return to action following their bye week. Prior to that, Buffalo allowed a 43-yard hail mary TD pass, with two seconds left in the game, and lost 32-30 to the Cardinals on the road in Arizona. This projects as a high scoring contest as the Bills are averaging 27.2 points per game and the Chargers are scoring 26 points per game.

Los Angeles is traveling west to east to play an early game for the second time in three weeks. The Chargers lost 29-21 in Miami during Week 10 action. The final score is slightly deceiving as the Dolphins were up 29-14 prior to allowing a late touchdown. Buffalo enters this game well rested and at near full health. WR John Brown (ankle) is the Bills lone injury concern. The Chargers are dealing with several key injuries on defense. Thats not good against the potent Buffalo offense. Buffalo and OVER is an attractive parlay wager.

Buffalo is a -5 point favorite at DraftKings Lay the line and bet on the Bills.

BEST BET: Bills -5

Steve Renner (@Steve_Renner)

LA Chargers at Buffalo Bills (-5) | TOTAL: 53

The Chargers have had a hard time closing out games and even struggled to close out the Jets last weekend. Now they travel west to east for a 1PM eastern kickoff in Buffalo against a rested Bills team. This is a spot to jump on Buffalo as theyre the better team and should have the weapons on defense to limit the air attack of Justin Herbert, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Ill comfortably lay the 5 with Buffalo.

BEST BET: Bills -5

Ian Ritchie (@SIGambling)

Los Angeles Chargers at Buffalo Bills (-5) | TOTAL: 53

I am expecting a high scoring game with the Bills coming off a rest week and the Chargers traveling across country after a win versus the Jets. Josh Allen is having himself quite a year and with the rest week and a home game, I fully expect them to take care of business.

The Chargers with Herbert under center are scoring enough points and beating mediocre teams but the Bills are not mediocre, they are now elite. With a bad taste in their mouth after the hail mary loss to the Cardinals, look for Buffalo to take it out on the Chargers and their young QB at home in this one and get us an easy cover.

BEST BET: Bills -5.5

Scott Atkins (@ScottFantasy)

NY Giants -6 @ Cincinnati Bengals | TOTAL: 43

BEST BET: Giants @ Bengals UNDER 43

Casey Olson (@Y2CASEY)

Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars (+6) | TOTAL: 49

So the Browns just can't decide if they want to be a top tier team yet or not. On four occasions they come out and score 10 or less points, then in the other six games they score 32 to more. After winning two straight, Cleveland has some momentum and are in the hunt at 7-3 to sneak a playoff birth in the AFC.

Helping the cause will be their matchup this week against a Jaguars squad that has rattled off nine straight losses while allowing their opponents to put up an average of 30 or so points a game. Mike Glennon has been announced the new starting QB for the Jags this week and it will be his first since early on in 2017. Glennon didnt sound uber confident stating, "We're a 1-9 football team. I'm just going to do whatever I can to help."

Even with a substantial list on the midweek injury report, the Browns should be able to cover less than a TD in this spot.

BEST BET: Browns -6

Gary Gramling, The MMQB (@GGramling_SI)

Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles (+5) | TOTAL: 50

The Let Russ Cook campaign came to a screeching halt after an avalanche of ugly turnovers, and if last game was any indication the Seahawks are returning to the run-game-plus-play-action formula. That alone should have their score projection in the 20s, not the 30s, for this game. As for the Eagles, the entire offense is disjointednot just Carson Wentz. Plus, since 2018, the Philly has faced a defense allowing six or more yards per play nine times, and all nine of those games went under. They just dont have what it takes to roll it up on bad defenses.

BEST BET: Seahawks at Eagles UNDER 50

Mitch Goldich, The MMQB (@mitchgoldich)

Seattle Seahawks at Philadelphia Eagles (+5) | TOTAL: 50

I hate to say this as a Philly native, but the best bet on the board is the Seahawks taking care of business against the Eagles. Sometimes you just have to bet with your head over your heart.

Are people watching the same Eagles team Ive seen all year? Its a little hard to expect a bounce-back against a team as good as the Seahawks, especially if Chris Carson returns to the lineup. And remember that Doug Pederson is winless against Seattle, with the Eagles scoring just 15, 10, 9 and 9 in those games. Its hard to expect more than 17 or 20 this time around, and that probably wont be enough.

BEST BET: Seahawks -5

The global gambling industry has been severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the United States, the biggest gambling market globally, many states had to order temporary closure of the land casinos. Other countries also ordered the closure of the casinos to avoid the spread of the virus. The closure of the casinos and sportsbooks is going to have a massive impact on the industry. However, online gambling players like BetWinner have been offering their services and enjoying good fortunes even during this global health crisis. In fact, many online gambling sites have reported enjoying greater rates of engagement than ever before.

While online gambling always played an essential role in the global gambling industry, it is now expected that online gambling growth will be significantly greater than the land casino sector.

Gambling shares on the global stock markets have also witnessed a sharp decline. Due to this, several gambling companies like William Hill, VGC Holding, and The Stars Group have issued statements regarding the potential effect of the pandemic on their gambling/casino operations.

While the last decade has witnessed the shifting of the casinos and gaming center from Las Vegas and Atlantic City to Macau in China, there is no doubt that the gambling industry has taken a significant hit during the pandemic and it is likely to impact the performance of this industry in the coming decade.

The markets in these regions are analyzed through industry statistics, industry growth analysis by value, industry segmentation and an industry forecast. Industry data is analyzed for the years 2014 to 2023.

Moving on to the analysis of the global online gambling industry, the industry is analyzed through an industry overview, industry growth analysis through value, industry revenue growth, industry segmentation, an analysis of the major products and services of the industry and an analysis of the major online gambling markets.

The major markets analyzed include Europe, France, United Kingdom and North America. The publisher also analyzes trends in the global online gambling industry, market share analysis, industry competition and a forecast for the industry till 2023.

Gambling Is the Only Game in Town – The Wall Street Journal

Posted: at 5:44 am

As I headed home from college for Thanksgiving, a foreign student staying the weekend asked about the holidays meaning. I quickly answered, Food, family and football. He said he understood the first two but not football. Another friend piped in, To enjoy it, you gotta have a little action going on the games. So I took the Cowboys over the team formerly known as the Redskins (hopefully theyll be renamed the Washington Swampers soon). We had to explain spreads and over/underlike teaching a baby to walk.

A little action helps. I was in a sports bar during college basketballs March Madness when all the games were pretty much over, and then Northeast Louisiana hit a bucket at the buzzer to lose by only 8 with the spread at 9. I stood up and screamed and got a lot of funny looks. Yes, interest definitely turns into commitment. But I wonder if its gone too far.

No question that gambling is fun, but its not for everyone. You used to have to go to a casino, see a bent-nose bookieIve got a horse right here, his name is Paul Revereor physically write down your picks for a friends football pool. Technology makes it so easy to bettoo easy. At any age. I worry.

Professional leagues have a rude history with betting: Raiders quarterback Kenny Stablers relationship with a well-known New Jersey gambling figure, National Basketball Association referee Tim Donaghys prison time for betting and manipulating scores, and Pete Roses ban for life for betting on baseball. Temptation is too alluring. But who cares now? Heck, the Raiders play in Las Vegas! Wanna bet all professional leagues embrace gambling as another revenue stream?

Now everyone is gambling. Online poker is addictive, until you lose. After the lockdown drought, sports blissfully came back, as did betting. Even formerly family-friendly fantasy football leagues are now big business. Betting operator DraftKings saw users up 64% and revenues almost double from last years third quarter. If, like me, you wonder how this is possible, New Jersey won a 2018 Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to legalize sports betting. Bits easily cross borders to bet. The spigots have opened.

Oklahoma Football: Unexpected Bye Week Thread, Gambling Picks, Texas-Iowa State, Iron Bowl and more – Crimson And Cream Machine

Posted: at 5:44 am

With the news that the Oklahoma Sooners would not be playing the West Virginia Mountaineers this Saturday, Thanksgiving weekend has become a period of observation with a tinge of potential schadenfreude. First on the docket is perhaps the matchup that carries the most intrigue for OU fans, as the Texas Longhorns take on the first-place Iowa St. Cyclones in a game that essentially serves as a play-in for a Big 12 title spot. If the Cyclones and Sooners win out, OU gets a shot at revenge. If OU and Texas win out, the Sooners get a shot at a second win over the Horns.

Most of us would prefer the former, but this feels like a win-win situation (provided that Oklahoma wins out).

Anyway, feel free to head on down to the comments section to discuss all of this weekends action as it unfolds.

Iowa State (-1) at Texas - Texas hasnt played a football game since Nov. 7 hasnt looked particularly good in any of its three wins since the Red River Shootout/Showdown/Rivalry/whatever. Meanwhile, Iowa State looked like a well-oiled machine against Kansas State last weekend though the Wildcats are a shell of their former selves in the absence of Skylar Thompson. Itll be important for Brock Purdy and the Clones can make Sam Ehlinger pay for his shortcomings and build enough of a cushion entering the fourth quarter, because a close affair allows for Ehlinger to work his late-game magic. Just ask OU and OSU. Gambling pick: Iowa State holds off a comeback attempt and sets itself up for a trip to Arlington. Under 57.5

Notre Dame (-6) at North Carolina - When taking Lawrence-less Clemson into account, UNC might have to best offense (No. 4 in offensive SP+) the Irish have faced this season, so this could be entertaining for three quarters. Gambling pick: Notre Dame is too balanced for the Heels and cover on the road. Under 70

Texas Tech at Oklahoma State (-11) - OSUs defense really is good in spite of allowing OU to score 41, but a post-Bedlam hangover seems likely. Needless to say, spirits are not high in Stillwater. Gambling pick: Oklahoma State wont succumb to the upset bug, but Texas Tech beats the spread. Over 54

Auburn at Alabama (-24.5) - People like to refer to as Bo Nix Trevor Knight Jr., so maybe he can pull a rabbit out of his ass and somehow beat Nick Sabans team. Gambling pick: Nix will do no such thing. Bama by a lot. Under 62.5

Mississippi State at Ole Miss (-9.5) - I dont care that Steelers-Ravens was originally scheduled for Thursday night. This game shouldve been played on Thanksgiving anyway. This rivalry is the gift that keeps on giving, and now we add Leach and Kiffin into the mix? The teams respective records have zero bearing on the entertainment factor here. Gambling pick: Ole Miss wins another instant classic. Close enough for Mississippi State to cover. And the over/under is 69?!?! How perfect for this borderline-erotic matchup. Ill take the over.

Texas A&M (-14.5) at LSU - LSU isnt good, but theyre good enough to cover with this big line. Gambing pick: Screw it, LSU pulls the upset, too. Over 64

Kansas State at Baylor (-5.5) - Each of Baylors five losses have been relatively competitive, and I think they finally break through against the hampered Wildcats. Gambling pick: Baylor covers. Over 46

2020 is the year of COVID-19, of working from home, of lockdownsand no conference travel, but maybe more importantly for the onlinegaming industry it is amongst others:

Overall, there is a sense across the online gaming industry inEurope that this is the year where the drive originated bygovernments and regulators for tighter regulation, stricterenforcement and more selective licensing has reached anirreversible momentum.

We now have stricter regulation and stricter enforcement of AMLand responsible gambling rules. In the latter case, across severaljurisdictions (although not a stated policy objective to myknowledge) it seems that the regulation of gambling is headingtowards being a public health issue or atleast with public health as a foremost consideration (How elseexplain the very significant restrictions on advertising and ondeposit or stake limits in some jurisdictions).

As you will all know this is against a backdrop drawn inlate 2017 where the European Commission no longer considersthat treating complaints in the area of gambling is a priority: soany hopes of at least partial harmonisation have long gone with thewind.

The Gambling Commission in the UK is considered by many to have- so to say - overzealously led the charge onenforcement and restrictions in recent years, perhaps jointly theSwedish Gambling Authority, an advertising ban in Italy, andGermany now starting a chapter in the regulation of gambling whichhas long been in the making; While Holland is preparing (though notwithout delays) for rolling out regulation in late 2021.

There is a sense this side of the Atlantic that whilstadditional restrictions are being imposed on the gambling industryin Europe indicative of a policy which considers it to be a threatto public health, rather than an entertainment industry withspecificities which require regulation, the contrary is happeningsimultaneously in the US.

I dare suggest that there is an important point of economicpolicy to be considered here: having led the way in the developmentof the modern online gambling industry and having given birth tomost of the major players do European states want to seetheir homegrown businesses being relegated to playing second fiddleto US business? I think that it would be a shame not to make thisconsideration.

In the meantime, we are often asked about so-called new markets, about Ukraine, India, LATAM, Africa. Each comes with several layersof complexity in legal process, operations, compliance, andpayments. The bottom line is that the industry is a young adultnow. Quick wins are few and far between, even outside Europe andthe US.

The overall regulatory ecosystem is now such that it willinevitably lead to speeding up the process of natural selectionamongst operators. The strongest, best informed and most agile willmake it. It remains to see whether the stealthiest will too.

The content of this article is intended to provide a generalguide to the subject matter. Specialist advice should be soughtabout your specific circumstances.

What Are The Benefits Of Legalized Gambling? – Casino.Org News

Posted: at 5:44 am

Gambling is sort of like Marmite. Theres that love/hatequality to it that really divides people, not least governments.

For many who dont have any time for gambling they believe that it should be illegal and, earlier this year in the UK, MPs called for a review in how gambling is treated by the law.

But wheres the logic in that?

No matter where you fall in the debate theres no denyingthat legal or not, gambling would still find a way into peoples basements. Mayas well boost the economy with it and keep it within regulated and safe parameters, right?

It cannot be stressed enough, but peoples safety andsecurity should always be a priority. As weve discussed, gambling is adivisive topic, but its absolutely going to happen whether its legal or not.

When humans are forbidden from doing something, it onlymakes them want it more. And if the law wont allow that in a regulatedfashion, mobsters will be very happy to offer up their services.

By forcing people to go underground for these activities, you push them into the hands of criminals and thats where the real dangers arise. People could be scammed out of their life savings and thered be nothing in place to protect them from that.

With access to a regulated online gambling market and legitimate brick-and-mortar casinos, players are protected.

Its easy to find a licensed casino and play safe in theknowledge that your money isnt going to be hauled off by some gang.

When the market is regulated, it allows trusted casinos to emerge and attract more players.

Any competition is forced to follow suit, meaning the big players in the industry are law-abiding and dependable.

The revenue that can be earned from taxing casinos is HUGE!

This in itself makes legalizing gambling a no-brainer. Itsa pretty little cash cow for any government.

Its a well-known fact that the house always wins and when you look at those mega casinos, you know theyre generating a lot of money. Many economies experience a significant boost from casinos paying tax on their gross gaming revenue (GGR).

Each countrys gambling taxes and GGR system varies, but its always a percentage of the net profit.

In France GGR can be as high as 83.5 percent! In gamblingmecca Macau its much lower at 39 percent and the UK falls in the middle at 50percent.

Governments find it tricky to set these tax rates as theydont want to put off new business, but equally they want to get in on theprofit that can be made.

Russia, bizarrely, doesnt tax the casinos at all. So if youwant to open up a casino, that could be the place to go.

As well as the tax the economy benefits from, the jobsprovided can be colossal too. As an example, in 2018 in the state of Nevada, the gambling industry provided employment to 166,741 people.

People all over the world flock to gambling havens like Las Vegas and Macau every year in their millions.

Amazing casino comps attract high rollers from around the world, who end up pumping a lot of money into the economy. And its not just the whales who make a difference, either.

Gambling destinations attract all sorts of folk, from families on vacations to bachelor/bachelorette parties and wedding-goers.

The rise of casino tourism in places like Cambodia, Singapore, and the Philippines is really proving to be a big boost for industry too, not to mention cruise ship gambling too.

Where the casinos dont have restaurants on site they drawmasses of tourists to local eateries and shops giving the surrounding businessesa big boom.

Furthermore, it could be argued that casino tourism boosts diversity. A report by ftn News explains how in Australia, for example, many high rollers from China come and play and in a bid to make them feel more at home, casinos are employing more mandarin-speakers, or people from Mandarin-speaking countries to work as dealers and hosts.

Like every coin, there are always two sides and gamblingis no exception.

The problem around addiction to the thrill is a very real issue, sadly affecting millions of people.

Would this addiction disappear if gambling were madeillegal? Its extremely unlikely.

With the on-going discussion about the decriminalisation ofdrugs, its clear that the law will never get in the way of the vice and itsuser.

At least with a regulated market there are funds availableto deal with people needing help. Where something is illegal, an addict often findsthemself marginalized from society, unable to seek out the support they need.

In Delaware, for example, the state provides free counsellingto anyone having difficulties, a service theyre able to provide from themillions of dollars generated by the gaming industry.

And in the state of New Jersey, problem gamblers and theirconcerned loved ones can use a free text service. Available 24/7, the serviceoffers support and advice and has been shown to have a positive impact oncurbing suicide rates associated with the addiction.

As well as various support systems outside of the casinos onhand to help, with a regulated industry there are systems in place for players tolimit play.

In the UK theres always the option to self-exclude whereby you essentially drop out of playing for six months.

Self-exclusion is ideal for players whore worried theyrespending too much time or money on gambling and need to take a break. Whilstthe onus is on the player to keep that promise and steer clear of gamblingsites and offline venues, casinos should make it hard for you to come backwithin the timeframe.

Once youve made the self-exclusion agreement, your account with a gambling establishment will be closed down and any outstanding money will be returned to you.

Its also possible for this to apply to all memberships of the area, saving you the effort of contacting each casino individually.

So whats to be done?

Its clear that gaming benefits the economy but gamblingaddiction isnt going anywhere.

Many people are calling on casinos to do more to protect players. Its estimated that in the UK alone as many as two million people have a gambling problem and 21 percent of players admit that they gamble more than they can afford.

The Gambling Commission is proposing a cap on monthly losses of 100. Another suggestion is to curb players bonuses after an hour of playtime.

Both these measures would severely reduce the risk offinancial ruin a lot of people end up facing.

If these measures, and more like it, should be implementedit could prove to be the safety net needed to keep this otherwise fruitfulbusiness as a positive addition to any countrys entertainment.

However, with the UK taking steps to limit how much players can wager on sports, Playtech sponsor Jason Ader reveals in an interview with Casino.org the threat of gamblers turning to offshore sites to make bigger bets.

Whilst there need to be measures in place, they cant be soextreme as to push people into unregulated and dangerous territory.

Without regulation, players are at risk of fraud, and theeconomy cant benefit from the enormous financial rewards.

As the old saying goes, if you cant beat em, join em.

And like it or not, casinos and gambling will go on with or without the laws green light. Best to find a way that makes it as safe as possible then.

Dwyane Wade recounts him and Jimmy Butler losing $50K to Rajon Rondo, other teammates while… – Heat Nation

Posted: at 5:44 am

During his career in the NBA, Dwyane Wade won three titles and the distinction as one of the best shooting guards in league history.

Unfortunately, the Miami Heat legend and his former Chicago Bulls teammate Jimmy Butler were no match for Rajon Rondo when it came to gambling on road trips.

Me and Jimmy were going on a two-week road trip and Rondo is a shark, Wade said. Rondo is one of those guys that he can probably count all the cards. He shouldnt play; hes too smart.

So we were gambling with him and Jimmy says, D, how much money you going to bring? I said, Were going on a two-week trip and I feel like man Im going to bring a lot of money. Im going to bring $50,000. I can lose $50,000 for this trip. I mean, not lose, but Ill lose.

Wade was confident that he could bring that amount of money and stretch it out over the course of a two-week road trip. That didnt turn out to be the case.

I lost $50,000 within two hours on the plane ride, Wade said. We didnt even get to the city we were going to, and you know who else lost it? Jimmy Butler lost as well.

Needless to say, Wade and Butler learned their lesson when it came to gambling with Rondo during road trips.

Online betting, compulsive gambling on the rise amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts say the impact can be devastating – Post-Crescent

Posted: at 5:44 am

The coronavirus pandemic has fueled an increase in the use of online betting sites.(Photo: Getty Images/iStockphoto)

Years ago, Rose Blozinski of the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling took a phone call from a woman who was in big trouble.

"A stay-at-home mom did some online gambling and said, 'I owe them $30,000,'" Blozinski said of the phone call from the anonymous woman to the Council's helpline. "We gave her resources to contact for help with her addiction. But I never heard from her again and I don't know how it turned out."

That happened more than two decades ago, but fears about online gambling, which has been rising amid the COVID-19 pandemic, have returned andintensified.

Casinos were largely shut down in March as the pandemic took hold in Wisconsin. But many people turned to online, and unregulated, sites to play everything from slots to poker and blackjack.

Blozinski said gamblers who immerse themselves in online gambling are taking a huge risk.

"If you are a gambler and you are addicted to it, you are not just going to stop when the casinos close. That addiction is very strong, she said.

Online gamblers typically use credit cards to provide gambling stakes, butsince the state doesn't authorize the legitimacy of sites, bettors find it difficult to track wins and losses.

When you're online, youre walking into a territory that is not necessarily known, Blozinski said. How do you know whats legitimate or not?How would you ever know if you won or didnt win?

TheNational Council on Problem Gambling said the situation with online betting needs to be addressed.

Weve seen an increasingly wide expansion of online gambling during the pandemic, including sports betting, Lottery, and social gambling, as well as various methods of cashless payment," the Council said in a statement.

"We expect this to escalate as more state governments face budget shortfalls in the next two years. Protecting consumers who gamble, as well as their families, needs to be part of legislation, regulation and gambling company operations."

Family Addiction Specialist, which provides services in Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York, states on its website that "many of the major triggers for gambling are being exasperated during this period of quarantine and stay-at-home orders."

"These triggers include loneliness, boredom, stress, anxiety and depression. As many of us are currently isolated in our homes, gambling has become an outlet to reduce restlessness and monotony and to cope with loneliness and negative mood."

In addition, working from home "removes some of the barriers and safety nets that some people have relied on to help manage their gambling consumption." That includes having virtually no supervision or support from supervisors and little risk of getting caught gambling, according to the website.

"Being at home also means more screen time for many. As such, there is an increase in exposure to gambling-related advertisements that can serve as a significant trigger to gamble."

Blozinski, the executive director of the Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling, said online betting could be taking a significant toll in Wisconsin, pointing out that the Council estimates that approximately 333,000 residents have a gambling problem.

The helpline received 12,283 calls in 2019 from people who were looking for help with gambling addictions, she said. The average debt reported by callers was $20,714.

"That number fluctuates," Blozinski said. "Some people who call don't necessarily report a number. We've seen it as high as $70,000 although $20,000 is a big amount."

The Council has added a texting line and a chat line to its services.

"We try to keep up with the times," she said. "We get calls every year from every county in the state. There was a lull in calls when everything was shut down. But the calls have picked up.

"I'm sure that online gambling is an issue. If you have someone who is into their addiction big time, it is very difficult to stop cold turkey.Im sure people have found another option.
