This is how much Georgia spends on gambling – Henry Herald

Posted: April 25, 2021 at 2:02 pm

The 465 commercial casinos operating in the United States at the end of 2019 reported a combined revenue of $43.6 billion -- an all-time high. Gambling in the United States is by no means limited to casinos, either. All but six states had lottery games in 2019, and lottery ticket sales totalled $81.6 billion that year.

Between both lotteries and commercial casinos, Americans and tourists spent $125.2 billion on gambling in 2019 -- or about $491 for every adult in the country. Of course, gambling laws, which can restrict gambling opportunities, vary by state, as does interest in gambling. And residents of some states spend far more on lottery tickets and at casinos than others.

There are no casinos -- tribal or commercial -- in Georgia. Despite the relatively strict gambling laws, Georgia's lottery, which was approved by voters in 1992, is among the most popular in the country. Lotto ticket sales totalled $4.3 billion in 2019, more than in all but five other states. Lotto spending per adult in the state totaled $525 per adult, more per capita than in all but four states.

Georgia is the only state without any commercial casinos where gambling expenditures exceed $500 per adult.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Gaming Association, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states spending the most and least on gambling. States were ranked based on total spending on lottery tickets and in commercial casino gaming per adult 18 years and over in 2019. Gaming revenue refers to the amount earned by commercial casinos after winnings have been paid out to patrons.

Exactly what constitutes commercial casino revenue can vary by state. See the AGA report for a full methodological explanation. It is important to note that while there were 524 tribal casinos in the United States in 2019, these institutions are subject to different regulations than commercial casinos, and revenue from these establishments were not included in this story. Gambler wins incredible $700k parlay with Yankees-headlined picks – FanSided

Gambling is a dangerous game, but one sports fan came away a winner on Thursday night.

The nerve it takes to bet on the New York Yankees right nowsheesh. Despitehaving +500 oddsthrough six games to win the World Series per WynnBet, theyve come crashing down to Earth. Yet, thats exactly what one gambler did to start what turned into a six-team parlay.

The Boston Red Sox, for one, held a no-hitter through the first five innings against the Seattle Mariners, with Nick Pivetta eventually giving up his first hit and more. From there, the San Diego Padres were able to win their second game of the season against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium for that matter.

A complete lack of scoring in either sport, plus a lot of money involved, makes for a deadly cocktail for any gambler. Yet, this parlay was exclusively MLB and NHL-related.

Taking the Lightning and Penguins via the spread as in theyd have to win by two-plus goals to cash out is borderline insane. Especially with a $25,000 parlay on the line, this person must be a seasoned professional.

State Gambling Commission, Tulalip Tribe reach tentative agreement on sports betting compact amendment – KIRO Seattle

Posted: April 23, 2021 at 12:23 pm

The Washington State Gambling Commission and the Tulalip Tribe have reached a tentative agreement to amend a Class III gaming compact to add sports betting, according to a release from the state.

The agreement comes after nearly a year of negotiation and after Gov. Jay Inslee signed HB 2638 last year authorizing sports wagering at tribal casinos.

It is the first sports wagering compact agreement in Washington while setting up a framework for sports betting at the tribes gaming facilities.

We believe that this compact amendment is a thoughtful approach by the Tribe and State that ensures sports wagering will be conducted with the highest integrity while protecting the public by keeping gambling legal and honest, said Washington State Gambling Commission Chair Bud Sizemore. The State and Tribal negotiation team did a great job coming to this agreement. There is still a lot of work before the first regulated sportsbook opens in our state, and Im hopeful sports wagering can launch before the NFL regular season begins.

We are extremely satisfied with the compact amendment and our ability to work together with the State on this effort to maintain a strong regulatory environment for gaming in Washington State, said Tulalip Chairwoman Teri Gobin. Sports wagering is an exciting new opportunity for Washingtonians. The revenue sports wagering provides -- like all tribal gaming revenue -- stays in Washington, creating jobs and increasing charitable contributions that benefit communities throughout the state.

The agreement must go through a state and federal approval process, which include:

There were a total of two tribal casinos in all of Texas in 2019, housing 3,765 gaming machines. Commercial casinos are not permitted in the Lone Star State.

In November 1991, voters in Texas approved of a state lottery, and the first ticket was sold in May of the following year. Lottery ticket sales in Texas totalled $5.9 billion in 2019, more than in nearly every other state except New York, California, and Florida. However, per capita annual lottery ticket sales comes out to just $274 in Texas, less than in 22 other states.

Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Gaming Association, 24/7 Wall St. identified the states spending the most and least on gambling. Here’s why Texas should cash in on sports betting and gambling – SportsMap Houston

Posted: at 12:15 pm

A multimillion-dollar ad campaign urging the Texas Legislature to approve casino and sports gambling in the Lone Star State has begun to air on local radio and television. The campaign is funded by the Las Vegas-based Sands Corporation.

Texas is considered the holy grail of states that currently don't allow casino and sports gambling. In fact, the Texas constitution specifically bans casino and sports gambling. That's very specific and weird.

Two bills currently filed in the legislature effectively would amend the state constitution. If the bills are passed by two-thirds majority in both the state House and Senate, voters would get to decide in November if casino and sports gambling come to Texas.

Don't bet on it.

Republicans currently have a majority in both the Texas House and Senate, and they are almost unanimously against legalizing casino gambling in Texas. Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has promised that voters will not get to decide whether or not to legalize gambling in Texas. "It won't see the light of day," he said during a radio interview.

Polls, however, show that Texans overwhelmingly favor casino and sports gambling. A recent poll conducted by the Dallas Morning News and UT-Tyler found 57 percent of Texans support casino gambling with only 29 percent opposed. The remaining 14 percent of Texans said it didn't matter to them.

Sports gambling was supported by 43 percent with only 26 percent opposed. The remaining 31 percent may have been too busy filling out their March Madness brackets to respond.

It's understandable why the legislature is not addressing casino and sports gambling. Legislators are more focused on limiting access to the ballot box with measures that critics say are targeted at voters of color, the disabled, and older citizens. Proposed bills would ban overnight early voting and drive-through early voting, both of which boosted voter participation in recent elections in Harris County.

Supporters of the proposed bills say they're necessary to increase election security in Texas, although no widespread voter fraud was found in 2020. The House has approved a bill that would permit Texans to carry handguns without a permit. Our legislature has filed more bills considered anti-LGBTQ than any other state.

Texas is one of only five states that don't allow casino gambling. The others are: Utah, Tennessee, Hawaii, and Alaska. Meanwhile, the Sands Corporation reported that Texans annually spend $2.5 billion in nearby casinos in Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico.

The Sands Corporation has presented plans that would build large casino resort complexes (one each) in Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and Austin. The resorts would include hotels, restaurants, retail stores and recreation facilities.

They say the resorts would create thousands of construction jobs and tens of thousands of operating jobs.

Texans who want to bet on sports currently have no shortage of online sites perfectly willing to take their money. The sites do not kick back any revenue to Texas coffers. It should be noted that no Texan has ever been brought up on charges for wagering on sports with online betting sites.

Professional leagues and governing bodies enthusiastically support sports betting. The NFL recently announced long-term deals with the three largest online gambling companies: DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars. DraftKings is the official fantasy site for the men's pro tennis tour. Televised tournaments showcase shifting odds while matches are being played. You can wager on which player will win the match, each set, each game, even the next point.

ESPN has a long-term partnership with DraftKings, including a daily betting show on the network. Online betting sites sponsor golf tournaments. The Washington Football Team recently received a sports betting license. Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. has a sports gambling parlor inside the building. Nationals Park and Wrigley Field have applied for on-premises sports books.

The NBA wants a piece of the action. Charles Barkley recently said a team owner told him that profits from gambling will exceed money from television, the life blood of pro sports, within a few years.

The No. 1 sports gambling location isn't in Las Vegas. It's a Starbucks in Fort Lee, New Jersey, the first exit off the George Washington Bridge from New York City.

We are a nation of bettors. Gambling is profitable, maybe not to the bettors, but the "house" makes a fortune. Those chandeliers in casinos weren't free.

If the legislature approves, and voters say yes, Texas would be the house. Twenty-one states and Washington D.C. have sports betting, with many more coming.

Not Texas, though. Somebody needs to clue our representatives who aren't representing us. We don't need the TV weatherman to know it's time to "make it rain" in Texas.

Beer At Theaters, Sports Gambling: Businesses React To New Laws – Patch.com

Posted: at 12:15 pm

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD Maryland finished its legislative session on April 12, bringing new laws to the state. These laws affect everything from alcohol sales to unemployment insurance and sports gambling. Some legislation also let Anne Arundel County raise taxes based on income.

Patch recently partnered with several local organizations to bring you their latest news. This guest contribution comes from the Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce. Here's what President and CEO Mark Kleinschmidt wrote about the new laws:

"The Chamber's Legislative Committee meets every month to discuss public policy issues and monitor legislation that is being considered by the Annapolis City Council, Anne Arundel County Council, and the General Assembly. Sometimes the Committee will look at a piece of legislation that is being considered by the US Congress.

The role of the Committee is to identify legislative issues that can help or hurt the operation of business in Anne Arundel County and formulate a position of opposition or support.

The Committee keeps a close eye on the legislative process and once an issue of interest is identified, they will complete additional research and meet with elected and government officials to gather even more information and gain a better understanding of the politics behind the issue.

The Chamber seeks to maintain a cooperative relationship with elected officials so we can provide our input and comments about a particular piece of legislation or policy and explain how it might impact local businesses. Occasionally the Committee will develop a policy recommendation for the Chamber's Board of Directors about proposed legislation and ask the Chamber to take a formal position.

Each year, once the dust settles from the legislative session[,] the Chamber holds a wrap up meeting for the membership to provide a high level overview about recently passed legislation and how it might impact the operation of their business and [affect] future economic conditions. This year's Legislative [Wrap] Up meeting was held virtually and had about 35 attendees. Here are a few highlights from the meeting.

Last March when the uncertainty of COVID-19 took hold, the General Assembly was faced with predictions of large budget shortfalls. This did not happen due to several rounds of stimulus funding from the federal government.

With $3.9 billion in federal pandemic relief, lawmakers approved a $52 billion Maryland budget. The governor and the Maryland General Assembly worked together on the RELIEF Act, which provided more than $1 Billion in targeted tax relief and economic stimulus for families and small businesses.

The influx of federal dollars helped stabilize the State's budget and provide much needed financial support to citizens and businesses throughout the State.

Business owners throughout the State are concerned about a potentially large increase in the amount of unemployment insurance they will have to pay due to the large spike in unemployment caused by [the] pandemic.

To address this concern, the RELIEF Act indicated that unemployment insurance rates for 2021 would be calculated based upon business' experiences from 2017, 2018, 2019, and would exclude 2020.

This provision, along with over a billion dollars of federal money that the state was able to backfill into the unemployment insurance fund, was meant to stabilize unemployment insurance rates. There is still concern about rates increasing even after the [legislation] was passed.

The Legislative Committee is continuing to monitor this situation.

Very soon you will be able to place a legal bet on your favorite sports team or event.

The General Assembly approved sports wagering at Maryland's six casinos, thoroughbred racetracks, the three major professional sports venues, existing off-track betting facilities, and commercial bingo licensees. The bill also allows for up to 30 additional on-premises wagering sites, and up to 60 mobile wagering licenses.

The casinos and racetracks will likely be the first to actually offer wagering, followed by licensing and a competitive process for the additional on-premises and mobile licenses.

The goal is to have at least some wagering available by the 2021 NFL season, and the full licensing process is expected to take 12-24 months.

Legislation was passed that will allow the sale of beer and wine in movie theaters.

Another bill hoping to stimulate business for bars, restaurants and taverns authorized local liquor boards to adopt ordinances that allow the sale of carry out beverages through July, 2023[.]

While this legislative session has come to an end, the Chamber is still concerned about a number of issues and legislative proposals that will most likely return ... in 2022. During the Legislative Wrap Up, the [following] concerns were outlined:

The Time to Care Act of 2021 would have established a Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program similar to the way that the unemployment system is set up. Employers and employees would split payments into the fund and employees would be entitled to receive benefits under that fund.

Though this bill did not receive a vote in either chamber, it will most likely resurface in 2022.

The General Assembly authorized [the] Anne Arundel County Council to enact two new tax increases. The County Progressive Income Tax and the Transfer Tax Surcharge are of great concern to the Chamber. Over the next few months, the Legislative Committee will be reaching out to the County Council to express our concerns.

This session was the first in years that we have not seen a bill introduced that would require employers (with certain exceptions) to provide employees with their schedules a certain number of days in advance. This would be a burden on small and large employers and the Chamber will continue to monitor any movement of this bill.

Mark Kleinschmidt is the President/CEO of the Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce located in Annapolis, MD. "

How Texas Gambling Expansion Could Spark Convention Transformation – GamingTodaySlotsToday

Posted: at 12:15 pm

Texas is not a gambling-friendly state. It has some of the toughest anti-gambling laws in the country. Casinos are illegal, but even simple games like roulette are against the law. Even worse, social gambling like having a poker night among friends violates Texas law. (But that doesnt mean a Texas Ranger will break your door down for doing it.) But the final nail in the coffin seems to be Texas highest elected officials continued opposition to gambling expansion. The Governor, President of the Senate, and Attorney General all oppose gambling.

However, Republicans are split on this issue. Free-market Republicans are open to allowing gambling if it creates jobs and boosts the economy. Religious conservative Republicans view gambling as immoral and fear consequences for Texas families succumbing to some sort of moral rot. (Whether they realize it or not, both groups value the freedom for people to make their own choices differently.) Theoretically, that leaves room for Democrats to provide the necessary votes to relax Texas gambling laws.

But the Texas leadership will stop any gambling legislation from coming to a vote, much less passing it. But shortly before his death, GOP mega-doner Sheldon Adelson began a lobbying push for Texas politicians to allow casino gambling. Seemingly in response, Governor Abbott has also signaled that hed be open to gambling expansion if Texas voters wanted it. That wont change the minds of voters who believe gambling is wrong as a first principle. But Republicans in favor of creating competitive industries may not have considered an underrated perk of gambling legalization: large gambling conventions.

The Global Gaming Expo is one of the largest gambling conventions in the world. One of the events it hosts is in Las Vegas, but the convention holds events worldwide. In 2019, its Las Vegas convention generated $42.1 million and brought about 26,000 visitors to Vegas. The money is one thingpaying for convention space is one great source of revenue. But the visitors can boost revenue for a city while theyre visiting for the convention. These visitors will frequent local restaurants and other shops. Any city that thrives on tourism has a stake in gambling legalization.

If Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio became home to a gambling convention, they would enjoy another large event to profit from. All three cities have venues suitable for hosting conventions. These gambling conventions would also make Texas one of the premier gambling markets in the United States. Becoming a prestigious gathering place for industry leaders would attract other innovative companies, too. However, Texas would have to make a big decision about its futurecould such a conservative state house these gambling conventions?

Although Texas large cities house some progressives, most of the state is a sea of Republicans. Many of them find gambling abhorrent on principle. If Texas allowed gambling and the big conventions found new homes in the Lone Star State, these voters would have a backlash ready for Republicans who strayed from their party line. Legalizing gambling and attracting gambling conventions wouldnt just change Texas economic landscape. It would change Texas conservative image, which some voters will find unacceptable.

So, Texas Republicans have a big challenge on their hands. On the one hand, powerful GOP doners want casinos to open in Texas, giving them the chance to become first-movers in a newand massivegambling market. However, Republicans are being pulled the other way by the morality police in their party. These members would view this as moral rot on the great state of Texas, and they wont go down without a fight. If gambling expansion comes to Texas, these Republicans should be expected to fight back against whatever gains the gambling industry makes.

Although gambling expansion could include many new types of gambling, casino gambling is the one that Sheldon Adelson pushed for. Given his wifes, Dr. Miriam Adelsons, behind-the-scenes influence as a political donor, shell likely push for the Texas market to open too. The pressure is on Texas Republicans to decide how to balance the demands of their largest donors against the most passionate members of their caucus and voters.

Attracting gaming conventions to Texas would be exciting for big Texas cities. Conventions like the Global Gaming Expo generate millions of dollars in revenue and attract tens of thousands of visitors. Embracing gambling would change Texas anti-gambling image, which social and religious conservatives view with a sense of pride. There are more important issues to them than money, which will inflame tensions on the few issues that can split Republicans.

So, the battle for Texass image and future is on. Gambling proponents have a good chance of winning the war in the long run. Money is a powerful political influence, and wealthy donors can fund campaigns that will advance their interests. But as Michael Bloombergs presidential campaign showed, money isnt everything. Voters still have to take the presented candidate seriously. But that constant pressure will bend establishment Republicans over time, and Governor Abbott already seems a little bendy.

Itll be expensive, but gambling will eventually creep into Texas. The conventions will likely follow, raising serious questions for Texas voters concerned about gamblings morality. After that, the story will shift from conventions economic impacts to its impact on voters who vehemently oppose it. Itll be a great show for the rest of us.

Apple approved another secret gambling den, masquerading as a puzzle game – The Verge

Posted: at 12:15 pm

This morning, I wrote how Apples $64 billion-a-year App Store isnt catching incredibly obvious multimillion-dollar scams because the company isnt even bothering to audit its most profitable apps for fraud, and how app developer Kosta Eleftheriou is showing the company how its done.

But thats not the only kind of scam Eleftheriou has been uncovering in Apples App Store he has also discovered that Apples review teams have been approving games that transform into secret gambling dens when you access them from certain countries (or via VPN). We wrote about two of them last Thursday as if they were an isolated incident, but hes now found at least two more, suggesting this may be a trend including a match-three puzzle game dubbed Lucky Stars that turns into a casino if you open it in Russia, and a game called Vegas Pirates that does the same.

In some ways, theyre even more egregious examples: while it might be more shocking that a kids monkey-collecting-bananas game would transform into a gambling den, these new apps would seem to invite extra scrutiny with their gambling-oriented visuals and the fact they pretended a Russian news organization was their developer website.

Theyre both gone now.

If youre looking for shock value, Eleftheriou also spotted this unrelated app the other day:

Apple is testifying before Congress today and in an incredibly high-profile court case against Epic Games next month about how its App Store protects users, justifies the companys traditional 30-percent cut (reportedly $64 billion last year alone), and shouldnt be broken up. These kinds of discoveries are giving the companys critics a lot of ammo.
