4 pros and cons to the Carolina Panthers gambling on Deshaun Watson – Cat Crave

(Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports) Deshaun Watson

Rumors of the Carolina Panthers remaining interested in Deshaun Watson despite adding Sam Darnold have surfaced, which leaves lots of questions.

For now, Sam Darnold is the Carolina Panthers starting quarterback and yet without taking a snap he is already facing rumors of being replaced.

The Panthers have been attached to the latest Deshaun Watsonspeculation, with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk claiming that the organization was still keeping an eye on developments surrounding the signal-caller.

While adding Watson would be a shocking move it isnt out of the question for a team desperately searching for a franchise quarterback something the former Clemson star has proven to be with the Houston Texans.

They have seen how impossible it is to win without one and are willing to make any move to secure their future.

However, is adding Watson the right move?

There are certainly plenty of positives in adding a player as talented as Watson. But one would be remiss not to point out the obvious issues to adding the 2018 first-round pick.

It seems increasingly likely Watson will not finish the season in Houston and could be moved before Week 1.

He has demanded a trade and the Texans are obviously in a complete tear-down mode after three years of questionable moves. Let us take a look at the pros and cons of adding Watson to the Carolina roster.

2021 NFL Gambling Blueprint: 10 things to know betting this NFL season – FOXSports.com

Posted: at 8:59 am

By Jason McIntyreFOX Sports Betting Analyst

Preparation is the hallmark of being a good sports bettor. And with the 2021 NFL season upon us, it's time to get prepared.

We did this exercise last summer, calling it my first annual NFL blueprint, and it had some bulls-eye hits. I was "irrationally excited" about the Washington defense and the Chase Young-led group finished third in overall defense. I cautioned against backing the Atlanta Falcons and they went 4-12 (7-9 against the spread).

Whiffs? Those happen sometimes in gambling. I said to "resist the urge" to back the Buffalo Bills and they went 12-7 ATS and made the AFC title game.

Lets do better in 2021. Here are the 10 things I'll be keeping in mind this season.

20-0? SURE, WHY CANT TOM BRADY DO THAT?

The defending Super Bowl champs return all 22 starters, something that hasnt been done in the modern era. And it gets better.

Remember: Tampa Bay had to win three straight road playoff games to reach the Super Bowl. There was uncertainty at the beginning of the season for the Bucs. They made a change after starting 7-5 more play-action and more pre-snap motion and never lost another game. The Saints, meanwhile, lost their Hall of Fame QB (Drew Brees), and New Orleans was the only team in the putrid NFC South to beat the Bucs last year.

When you look at the schedule, the Bucs are going to be favored in every game except Week 3 at the Rams. Of the six other teams with the best Super Bowl odds (Chiefs, Bills, Packers, Ravens, 49ers, Rams) the Bucs only face two of them. They get Buffalo at home in Week 14.

The last accomplishment Brady can add to his GOAT resume is an undefeated season. He's almost done it once before, and I think there's a chance he could do it this year. And the price is right: At FOX Bet specifically, that line is a whopping +22500, meaning just a $10 bet would win you $2,260 total.

Read that again. It might be the best pizza money youve spent in 2021.

BEST BET TO GO WORST TO FIRST: THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS

How much do I love the Jacksonville Jaguars? Let me count the ways.

Depending on who you read, Trevor Lawrence is the best, most NFL-ready QB to enter the NFL since Andrew Luck. Remember that guy? Luck, while completing only 55% of his passes, flipped the Colts from 2-14 to 11-5 and the playoffs.

Im not sure Lawrence will get the Jaguars 11 wins, but the division is there for the taking, especially with two major injuries the Colts announced this week.

If youve followed me on social media this summer, you know Im all-in on the Jaguars to go from worst to first and win the putrid AFC South, a bet that was going off at around +800 before the Carson Wentz injury news pulled the division off the board.

According to Sharp Football, since 2000, 10 QBs have been selected No. 1 overall and started at least 10 games in their rookie year. Their average win percentage is 39%, which is equal to 6.6 wins in a 17-game season. But Lawrence will be working with offensive coordinator Darren Bevell, who guided Russell Wilson to offensive success (and two Super Bowls) in the first three seasons of his career.

As if all that wasnt enough, expect Urban Meyer to have some edges in his first year since hes never coached in the NFL. In the last decade, thats been the case for Jim Harbaugh and Chip Kelly.

Lastly, the Jags went 1-6 in one-score games last year, including losses to three playoff teams (Titans, Packers, Browns).

SHHHHH! DONT REMIND PEOPLE ABOUT THE BALTIMORE RAVENS!

Turn on a TV, doom-scroll on Twitter or listen to any football podcast, and youre going to find everyone gassing up the Bills, Browns and resurgent 49ers as the sexy teams of 2021.

Forgetting anyone? Despite having the consistency of the North Star under John Harbaugh, the Baltimore Ravens are getting no love when it comes to Super Bowl talk.

Following a 6-5 start, a game in which 18 players were lost to Covid, and losing their star left tackle midseason, the Ravens still managed to go 11-5 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to Buffalo. The Ravens also ended last year as the only team in the NFL in the top 11 in offense (11th), defense (ninth) and special teams (second).

So why arent they getting more love?

Reminder: Lamar Jackson is 30-7 as a starter. Baltimore got even more help for him in receivers Sammy Watkins, Rashod Bateman and Tylan Wallace. The Ravens are favored in 12 of their first 13 games. And if I cant hammer home the "one-score game" results enough, heres your reminder that Baltimore went 5-1 in those affairs in 2019 (when they finished 14-2) and sagged back to 2-4 in 2020 (when they went 11-5).

Give me the Ravens (+1500 to win the Super Bowl, so a $10 bet wins $160 total) in 2021.

WHAT ARE THE 49ERS DOING AT QB?

The 49ers have all the hallmarks of a bounce-back team.

They lost more games to injury than anyone else in the NFL in 2020, per Football Outsiders. Eight of the 11 defensive starters from the Super Bowl team two years ago are still on the roster. Jimmy Garoppolo is healthy, and hes 22-8 as a starter with the 49ers. Presumably, his receivers wont drop as many passes as last year (39, second-most in the league). They open on the road with two of the worst teams in the NFC (Detroit, Philadelphia).

So if you want to take a flier on their Super Bowl odds (+1400; bet $10 to win $150 total), do so before Week 1, as the odds on the 49ers will get much tighter in the first month of the season.

The big problem is that nobody has any clue what Kyle Shanahan will do at QB. Its unfathomable that hed trot out the 21-year old rookie Trey Lance, but has Kyle Shanahan ever done anything conventionally?

THIS IS PROBABLY THE YEAR FOR THE COWBOYS MAYBE?

Im contractually obligated to remind you, before writing about the Dallas Cowboys, that if you want to bet them at any point this season, just know youre paying the "Dallas tax."

The Cowboys are still Americas team, and theres an entire generation of gamblers still waiting for Jerry Jones to resurrect the 90s Cowboys team that won three Super Bowls in four years at a pivotal moment in this country the rise of the internet (it's been a little while).

Everyone who pops into Vegas for a weekend loves to bet the Cowboys, but Dallas went 5-11 ATS in 2020, the worst in the NFL Coincidentally, that ended a four-year streak of Jerry's team finishing above .500 ATS.

The Cowboys are built around offensive weapons, but thats useless if the offensive line isnt healthy. Their starting tackles played two games last year. Injury reports will be your friend when it comes to the Cowboys' OL in 2021.

Defensively, I have major questions, because if Aldon Smith and Randy Gregory cant stay out of trouble, DeMarcus Lawrence will face all the double teams, and Dan Quinns rebuilt secondary will get torched like last year.

It could be a weird year in Dallas, but if you're looking to back the Cowboys, the win total over/under (9.5 wins) might be a better option than paying the "Dallas tax" week-in and week-out.

THERES NO TOUGHER SEPTEMBER SCHEDULE

Oh, what a difference a year makes.

Here's a quote from the 2020 blueprint: "Speaking of schedules: Indianapolis Colts? Buy, buy, buy." But those halcyon days are long gone.

Instead, the Colts can thank Philip Rivers and his trip to the playoffs for this: The toughest September schedule in the NFL. They face three playoff teams from 2020 to start, and October doesnt get any easier: 10-win Miami followed by a trip to Baltimore. Did I mention that Weeks 3-5 are at Tennessee, at Miami, at Baltimore?

And theres no telling if theyll have star guard Quenton Nelson or starting QB Carson Wentz for either game. Theres still no word who the left tackle will be, since newcomer Eric Fisher is coming off surgery and may not be ready.

That stretch could should? give you an opportunity to fade Indianapolis for a few straight weeks and get some cash in your pocket early in the season. The Colts' top 10 defense which lost two starting edge rushers in free agency who finished second and third on the team in sacks will keep them in games early, but a 1-4 start is entirely possible.

NO, THE PACKERS ARENT GOING 13-3 AGAIN

The Aaron Rodgers offseason drama featured crazy swings betting on the Broncos to win the Super Bowl on the off-chance Rodgers got his wish! but ultimately ended up with a boring, "Hes staying."

After back-to-back 13-3 years, it smells like regression is on the horizon for the Packers.

Although Green Bay was 10-6 ATS last season, two things jump out at me. The loss of two starting offensive linemen from the No. 1 rated OL according to Pro Football Focus is one, plus star LT David Bakhtiari might miss the first month recovering from an ACL injury. But more than anything, it is the arduous schedule, which features an NFL-high 10 games against playoff teams from a year ago.

Theyre still clear favorites to win the NFC North (-162; bet $10 to win $16.17 total) although the Vikings will be pesky but this is not a team I want a Super Bowl futures ticket on.

THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS ARE THE MOST CONFUSING TEAM IN THE AFC

Ben Roethlisberger is 39, the Steelers finished the season 1-5, and Pittsburgh suffered an embarrassing home playoff loss to the Browns in the playoffs. There's a new offensive coordinator, the defense lost edge rusher Bud Dupree, the Browns are ascending and the Bengals can only get better.

Whats there to like about the Steelers?

Wait, theres more to not like! Three offensive linemen have to be replaced, and the Steelers only have one returning lineman who graded in the top 120, per Pro Football Focus. Meanwhile, a team that went 7-2 in one-score games and is bound for regression in that department has the toughest schedule in the NFL.

Fine, fine theres one positive: Pittsburgh doesnt face one DVOA top-10 pass defense until hosting the Ravens on December 5. And oh yeah, the Steelers havent had a losing season since 2003.

JUST BE READY FOR THE RYAN FITZPATRICK EXPERIENCE

Youve been warned: The 38-year old QB from Harvard is going to be the starter for Washington and Ive seen this movie before.

In Buffalo in 2010, Fitzpatrick took over for Trent Edwards and played so well, the Bills gave Fitzpatrick a six-year, $59 million contract. He proceeded to throw a league-leading 23 interceptions.

In New York in 2015, Fitzpatrick threw 31 TDs! The Jets brought him back; he threw 17 interceptions and was released.

In Miami in 2019, Fitzpatrick threw 20 TDs, and the Dolphins brought him back. He played admirably in 2020, but ultimately was pulled for first-round pick Tua Tagovailoa.

Not a knock, just the facts. Ryan Fitzpatrick often delivers for a year, then reality sets in. Hes got some talent in Washington Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Logan Thomas, Antonio Gibson but Im not prepared to bet on the defense carrying them again this season.

LAST YEAR, WE HIT A BULLS EYE ON THE BROWNS. THIS YEAR

From last years preview: "This is the year you look to bet the Browns early before the market catches up." When Cleveland stepped out of the rugged AFC North, they were an impressive 7-4 ATS. Three of those wins/covers came against playoff teams (Washington, Indianapolis, Tennessee).

This year, the non-division schedule is brutal, starting with an opening night trip to Kansas City. Before Halloween, theres a three-week stretch where they face top-15 QBs Kirk Cousins, Justin Herbert, Kyler Murray, which will be a tall order for a defense that may start as many as eight new defenders.

Tread cautiously with the Browns, who will be a very public team this year.

Valorant, Mobile Gaming, And The Shake-Up Coming To Esports Gambling – Forbes

Posted: at 2:01 pm

'Valorant' may become the new number-one game in esports betting.

Its no surprise that League of Legends, CS:GO, and Dota 2 are the kings of esports betting; theyve all been at the forefront of the young business for a decade or more. However, an industry expert believes these titans of competitive gaming will lose their foothold on the market in the coming years, in favor of new gamesand platforms.

Steven Salz, the co-founder and CEO of Rivalrythe Canadian esports betting firm currently valued at around $150 million, which plans to list itself on the Toronto Stock Exchange later this yearis making bold predictions for his industry, even if a familiar face will continue to reap a lot of the benefits.

Salz explains that LoL, CS:GO, and Dota 2 currently account for over 90% of esports betting with his companyand, he suspects, nearly every bookmaker globallybut he believes Riot Games enduring success with League will transfer to its latest release, Valorant, which will claim a top spot in the coming years.

The Rivalry CEO says the 2020 first-person shooters popularity continues to aggregate millions of players and viewers, and the biggest esports organizations in the world are now fielding competitive rosters to match this huge increase in interest.

This is evident from even newcomers like Guild Esports, a team that has eschewed the current big three, instead favoring competition in Valorant alongside more traditional sports games, such as FIFA and the soccer-inspired Rocket League.

Steven Salz, CEO and co-founder of Rivalry.

A lot of Valorants predicted future success is down to its creators existing network. The events being held are run by Riot Games and seeing massive viewership, says Salz. Where viewership of a sport growsesports or notbetting follows. Itll inevitably result in a sports betting ecosystem around it.

However, Valorant and esports current big three may face stiff competition from an ever-growing mobile game audienceand Salz is making an even more bold prediction for a wider industry shift, where PC-based games begin to feel the threat of a platform much more prevalent.

Our prediction is that in two to three years from now, the top five esports in gambling will include at least two mobile esports titles, Salz continues. We see a significant opportunity in betting around mobile esports such as Mobile Legends, Garena Free Fire, and PUBG.

The Rivalry CEO thinks mobile games will break through due to two simple factors: distribution and access, especially in those regions and nations where most players and fans dont own a console or personal computer. Many people in, say, Asia may go to PC centers to play, he explains, but they all have a mobile phone.

In certain places in south-east Asia, you already have stadiums being filled with fans watching professional mobile esports. Its inevitable, just given the numbers at play here, that a top mobile esports game will become a top betting opportunity.

While Salz cant see esports betting ever matching traditional sports gambling, but even baseball, hockey, and basketball may struggle to compete. He concludes: On a dollar basis, the top three esports games will exceed all other individual sportsother than probably soccer in Europe and football in the U.S.within the next ten years.

NC sports gambling bill on the move – WRAL.com

Posted: at 2:01 pm

By Travis Fain, WRAL statehouse reporter

Raleigh, N.C. A bill to legalize sports gambling in North Carolina will get a legislative committee hearing in the coming days, an early step in a longer process, but one that often augurs success for legislation.

Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, the top leader in the Senate's Republican majority, said Tuesday afternoon that Senate Bill 688 will move this week out of the holding pattern it has been in for months.

Update: The bill was added to the agenda for a Wednesday, 1 p.m., Senate Finance committee.

The movement signals that the measure got a thumbs-up this week from the Senate Republican caucus, a key arbiter for the bill's chances. Sen. Jim Perry, R-Lenoir, the bill's lead sponsor, said there's "a reasonable amount of support in caucus to move forward" with committee discussions, but he expects the bill to morph, as bills so often do at the statehouse.

"Based upon the feedback I've gotten, we should view this bill as a placeholder bill, and it will evolve in the committee process," said Perry. "A tightening up, watering down, whatever you want to call it."

The measure as of now would legalize online and in-person gambling on sports in North Carolina, though with a limited number of provider licenses issued by the state.

Asked whether the bill has enough support to move forward largely as is, Berger declined to predict.

"It'll go through the committee process," he said. "The bill sponsors tell me that there's support for it. We will see."

Want to Build an Online Sports-Betting Empire? Start With a Gas Station Casino – The Wall Street Journal

Posted: at 2:01 pm

LOVELOCK, Nev.West Hollywood entrepreneur Mark Thomas walked into the Big Wheel Casino, tucked inside a Conoco gas station off Interstate 80, and surveyed his next big deal.

About 50 slot machines with names like Wheel of Fortune and Wild Wolf chimed and flashed in the race-car-themed gambling room. The casino, about 90 miles from Reno, mostly draws truckers and miners, and the room was fairly empty that day. A gambler or two occasionally strolled in and out.

Mr. Thomas is buying the truck-stop casino to be the centerpiece of the digital sports-betting company he co-founded, ZenSports. The companys app launched internationally in 2019, and now Mr. Thomas is looking to start taking bets in the U.S.

Its very far removed from this, Mr. Thomas said, amid the faint smell of smoke. Maybe the opposite.

The marriage of the two comes as a quirk of the U.S. sports-betting industrya fast-growing, chaotic business being built on a patchwork of new state laws and old gambling regulations.

Cowboys Owner is Hopeful About Future of Legalized Gambling in Texas – Dallas Weekly

Posted: at 2:01 pm

By Logan Landers | on August 04, 2021

Despite seeing a pair of sports betting bills (HB 2070 / SB 736) stalled yet again by the GOP-dominated Texas Legislature, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones still believes in them and the opportunities the bills could offer.

Monday, Jones was speaking with Sports Radio 96.7 FM The Ticket, when he was asked whether he felt sports betting would become a regular occurrence in Texas. He stated that given how gambling has already been in Texas, he believes it can become a common practice. As an example of how it would operate here, he pointed to Cowboys fans betting during a game being telecast by Tony Romo and using sports vernacular.

I picture right there millions of people making a wager by hearing that, he said. Weve got to make sure that the terminology is the kind of terminology that is common, but I can see our game enhanced tremendously by that aspect of it.

The Cowboys, along with the Dallas Mavericks and the Texas Rangers, are a part of the Texas Sports Betting Alliance, which has been advocating for lawmakers to loosen their efforts to keep betting out of Texas. Dallas Cowboys Executive VP and Chief Brand Officer Charlotte Jones stated that with gambling already being such a prominent activity in Texas, legalizing it would be a way to offer restrictions and control.

Unregulated and illegal sports gambling is already taking place in the State of Texas, Jones said. Legalized sports betting would regulate the industry and generate millions of dollars of new revenue for the state which will help fund critical programs without raising taxes.

There appears to be little hope for the advancement of the legislation however, with the bill originally dying in May. In an article by The Texan, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick stated that the tax revenue that could be earned is not a real selling point for him. He insisted that the progression of legalized gambling is harmed by competing interests, which is why the bill is likely to never be seen.

Thats why it never goes anywhere, he said, and so its not even an issue thats going to see the light of the day this session.

Focus on the Family: Husband may have gambling issue – Boyertown Berk Montgomery Newspapers

Posted: at 2:01 pm

Q: For years my husband has enjoyed a weekly poker night with his friends. During the pandemic he got into online betting; now I'm concerned that he's turning into a compulsive gambler. He says I'm worried about nothing. How can I be sure?

Jim: While it sounds trite to say it, your husband may be in denial. Dr. Robert Custer, a trailblazer in the field of gambling addiction treatment, identifies denial as "refusing to acknowledge something to oneself [leading] to actually believing that there is no danger at all." It's a common mindset among those who struggle with gambling addiction.

Unfortunately, denial can affect others around the addict. Loved ones may subconsciously use it to explain away, minimize or rationalize destructive behavior. This being the case, I'd recommend that you first take an honest look at yourself. If you have been enabling a troublesome pattern in some way, you're going to have to change your approach in order to help your spouse.

If, upon reflection, you're convinced that your husband's gambling is compulsive, sit down with him and confront the issue head-on. Has he placed any limits on his gambling activity, either in terms of money wagered or time invested? Does he gamble as a way to escape from problems? Has he lied to others to conceal the extent of his gambling or worse, committed any illegal acts to finance the habit?

Depending on the answers to those questions, insist that he consider the possibility that he has a serious problem. Suggest that he seek professional assistance. If he's unwilling to listen, enlist the help of an objective third party a pastor, a relative or a male friend who agrees with your assessment. Our counseling department can offer you a free consultation and a referral to qualified local therapists; call 855-771-HELP (4357).

Q: How can I begin to help my kids break some of the bad screen-time habits that have set in during the COVID-19 lockdowns?

Adam Holz, Director, Plugged In: Screen time. Is there a bigger issue that parents are facing these days? My wife and I are dealing with it in our family. And most other families are too.

Screen time was a big issue before the coronavirus. And studies suggest that the amount of time we spend on screens now has perhaps doubled in the last year. That's a result of many factors: remote learning, being able to connect with friends almost exclusively through screen-based devices, and parents working from home themselves while not having the mental bandwidth to exercise discipline in this area 24/7.

So, what do we do? Before we deal with our kids' habits, we need to look at our own. Our children will naturally imitate what we model; thus, we may need to make screen-time adjustments ourselves before taking the next step.

With our kids, that next step should be a concrete and specific one that begins to reclaim lost ground. It might be as simple as no phones at the dinner table. Other suggestions include a tech-free night when the whole family engages in non-screen-related activities. We may also want to re-establish basic boundaries regarding where and when phones can be used, such as limiting use in bedrooms at night. The goal here is to set measurable, achievable goals as a family.

Habits take time to form and time to reshape. A reset in this area won't happen overnight, and it likely won't be without setbacks and moments of discouragement as you strive to break some unhealthy patterns and reestablish new ones. But by gradually establishing concrete, specific changes, you can successfully pull back from screen overuse as a family.

Casey Anthony Gambling and Partying Nonstop in Florida: Inside Her Life Today – inTouch Weekly

Posted: at 2:01 pm

Its been more than a decade since Casey Anthony was acquitted in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, and she now leads an entirely different life in Florida, multiple sources exclusively tell In Touch Weekly.

Shes been gambling at underground poker games and partying nonstop, a local in West Palm Beach explains in our August 2021 cover story about Anthonys various outings.

Casey goes to these poker parties after dark, another source who played cards with Anthony tells In Touch Weekly in an update. She meets up with six or eight of her friends and they all sit around a table covered in a green cloth with cards in their hands and drinking beer.

Anthony, 35, seems to be a real risk-taker and thrill-seeker, the source claims. Poker makes her feel alive, and thats why she likes to gamble! I have no idea where she gets the money from because as far as I know, she doesnt have a proper job.

I heard the PI [Private Investigation] company she set up isnt successful, the source goes on. Pat made a ton of money from selling the house, so its possible that shes using his money, but she can, somehow, afford to gamble.

By Pat, the source was referring to Anthonys lead investigator on her defense team, Patrick J. McKenna, who has long maintained Anthonys innocence.

Bill Warner, a private investigator from Sarasota, Florida, who has been researching Anthony for years, tells In Touch Weekly that Anthony was living with McKenna at a beach house which they very recently sold for $1 million. It looks like theyve moved out already, so theyre on the move, Warner says.

In addition to McKenna, Anthony has some friends who are true to her, Warner adds. It doesnt make any sense. She goes to bars with her head held high like nothing ever happened. She doesnt have any security or anything like that. Never.

She likes to argue. She lives for that, Warner claims. Some of the people she hangs out with [are] people who are in the law enforcement. Some of them are criminals.

Ever since she was found not guilty of murder, manslaughter and abuse charges in July 2011, Anthony has tried to remain out of the spotlight, but she made headlines for a dispute with a fellow bar-goer and frenemy in South Florida on May 23.

The verbal argument started between the two women at OSheas Irish Pub over an ex-boyfriend they were dating at the same time, according to the police report obtained by In Touch. No charges were filed after the incident.

Some people react negatively to her and some [do] not, Warner shares about the responses to Anthony being spotted out and about. Some are friendly towards her because shes still an attractive woman. The guys are all over her because shes good-looking. She gets a lot of male attention. They dont care about her past. People seem to have forgotten.

Ireland’s plan to launch gambling regulator – What will this mean? – jim o brien

Posted: at 2:01 pm

Ireland is poised to introduce a strict gambling regulator that could transform the current state of play regarding all forms of gambling and related advertisements across the country. The new watchdog will prioritise public health and wellbeing and have extreme power, as stated by James Brown, the Minister of State for Justice. The regulator is expected to be in full operation by the end of 2021, employing 100 people to keep an eye on Irish companies and impose fines in instances of non-compliance.

The new watchdog may be unwelcome news to some gambling businesses but not all of them. Operating in legal jurisdictions and prioritising player wellbeing will match the new branding of Entain, which has multiple gambling businesses in operation across the country, PartyCasino being one of their most recognised brands in the world. The changes may even work seamlessly with their new Advanced Responsibility and Care (ARC) strategy.

The story in detail

Irelands gambling laws and legislation have been outdated for a long time. Before an interim Act was passed early in 2021, the then-current laws were devised in 1931, with changes made in 1956. The industry was running on older rules that were not fit for purpose, especially considering the trend in online gambling and vast advertisement opportunities since their conception.

Another issue with the current system is that overseeing influences within the local gambling industry are fragmented. Multiple government departments and agencies are responsible for the different parts of regulation in the country. The creation of the new regulator will solve the outdatedness and the fragmented nature of the current state of play.

Will ads be banned in Ireland?

There is a possibility that gambling ads will be banned in Ireland as a result of pending changes. However, it may be more likely that an advert watershed is introduced, which is not currently the case. There have been growing concerns surrounding children witnessing scores of gaming ads each week due to no lights-out hours on these ads, especially as more children were being homeschooled over the last year.

Earlier this year, the Irish Labour Party tabled a Bill to ban all gambling ads on television as a way to prevent minors from witnessing these adverts. The Bill has been supported by Gaelic Players Association (GPA) and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). However, it is still unclear whether a blanket ban will be used or a watershed introduced. Mark Wall from the Labour Party has stressed that Ireland should not wait until the end of the year when a new regulator is created to ban these ads, suggesting that Ireland cannot wait that long.

These debated changes mirror what is happening across the Irish Sea, as the UK Gambling Commission wrestles with the same issues and the high prevalence of gambling companies partnering with professional sporting teams, notably as Premier League shirt sponsors.
