Sold-out Freedom Center conference brings in top conservative influencers to weigh in on Christians’ role in the public arena Liberty News – Liberty…
Posted: November 17, 2021 at 1:11 pm
November 16, 2021 : By Logan Smith - Office of Communications & Public Engagement
A sold-out Freedom Uncensored event, hosted by Liberty Universitys Standing for Freedom Center this past weekend, brought in conservative influencers including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, bestselling author Eric Metaxas, and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee to weigh in on social issues, politics, Marxism, and a multitude of other concerns facing Christians and the Church.
With over 1,200 registered and an overflow satellite location, attendees filled Libertys Montview Alumni Ballroom on Nov. 12-13, to hear from over a dozen leaders in the Christian faith and the conservative movement. Guest speakers included Lucas Miles, author of The Christian Left: How Liberal Thought Has Hijacked the Church; Liberty alumnus and entrepreneur David Benham; Daily Wire personality Michael Knowles; CEO of the Babylon Bee Seth Dillon, among many others. Live worship music was provided by John Forystek of Libertys Center for Commercial Music and recording artist Danny Gokey.
As Christians our first calling is to the Gospel, but as the Scriptures illustrate consistently, there is also a cultural mandate to disciple the nations, including governments, said Freedom Center Executive Director Ryan Helfenbein. One of the biggest reasons for this summit was to ignite conversations about Christians role in the public square through a biblical lens.
One of the greatest scandals in the Church today is the reluctancy to weigh in on crucial cultural topics with political risks and ramifications, he added. Everything today is political. Where the bible speaks clearly, we must not be silent. That has always been the tradition at Liberty University from the early beginning of Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr. all the way to present day. We have an obligation to speak with clarity, courage and conviction for the sake of Christ and the Gospel.
[Video clips from the summit will be posted to the Freedom Centers social media platforms in the coming weeks.]
Pompeo, who also headlined Fridays Military Appreciation Convocation at Liberty, gave the keynote address on day one of the summit, with a message on life, liberty, and truth. He outlined the fundamental freedoms granted to Americans that are worth preserving for the next generation. Pompeo also engaged in a Q&A with students and other members in attendance.
This conversation is about freedom uncensored. Each of us have a responsibility, a special responsibility those of us who are followers of Jesus Christ have an increased responsibility to make sure that that freedom we enjoy here in America remains uncensored, said Pompeo, who served as the 70th U.S. Secretary of State from 2018-21 under the Trump administration. Were right. The truth is on our side. We must unapologetically, fearlessly speak about this truth.
Other speakers included Standing for Freedom Center Fellows Virgil Walker, co-host of the Just Thinking podcast, political commentator Liz Wheeler, and former fellow and attorney Jenna Ellis.
Author, speaker, and host of the Relatable podcast Allie Beth Stuckey weighed in on how progressive evangelicals are adopting woke ideologies and conforming to popular culture in the name of being nice.
We want to be seen as nice instead of what is Christlike its a spiritual battle, and it always has been, she said on Friday. If your goal is to be nice, you will compromise. A necessary component of Christianity is calling what God says is good good and what God says is evil evil.
Metaxas addressed Christianitys influence on the world, including how it helped usher in modern living and scientific discovery. He challenged the audience to embrace a similar charge and apply the faith in their daily walks.
It is the Christian faith that in the 16th and 17th centuries led to the scientific revolution that we (see today), he said. Since God is the God of Truth and reality, there is no avoiding Him.
Day two featured Mike Huckabee, who addressed cancel culture, religious liberty, American exceptionalism, and how Christians have an obligation to engage in such topics in the public arena.
Other topics that were dialogued were the transgender agenda, the broader dangers of CRT, demonstrating faith at the cost of material gain, and more.
We need to quit apologizing for America and start celebrating America, Huckabee said. Our founders believed in something bold. They recognized that we are all created equal, and the creation process is by the Creator.
On day two, Ellis reminded attendees where their true source of Truth is derived: the Bible. She encouraged listeners to frame their ideological worldviews on the unchanging merits of Scripture.
We have to look to Scripture to build our political philosophy, Ellis said. When you are engaged in politics and policy, dont think of it being about what you think is good. Go back to Scripture and look to God about what He says is good.
The Standing for Freedom Center exists to educate Christians, from a biblical worldview, on social and political issues, and how the Church must respond to the whims of a secular and hostile culture. Some of its staple issues include religious liberty, limited government, free markets, rights for the unborn, as well as a multitude of other traditional, conservative values.
The Freedom Center has recently commanded a bold dialogue in opposition to socialism and Critical Race Theory (CRT), with a recent inclusion of white papers published on its website.

Hoosick Falls artist paints freedom, perseverance, and an end to the pandemic through horses in motion – Bennington Banner
Posted: at 1:11 pm
HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. Horses represent freedom to me, says Turkey-born artist Yucel Erdogan.
Erdogans images are filled with freedom and grace. They carry with them a feeling of deep reflection and solitude, powerful and resonant, through darkness and chaos. They stand for something more than simply horses. They speak of endurance and collective will, especially now after two years of pandemic and division. The uniform direction of the horses creates a determination and a will to move forward, together, all of us.
Hopeful that with freedom and strength, we can rise again, he says.
Erdogan owns 3rd Eye Gallery, an open space with the kind of natural light reminiscent of a high-end gallery in Soho, the sort of light that bounces off the tall ceiling and falls softly on the dozens of canvases lining the old plaster, the kind of walls artists love. The gallery sits right next to BYTE, an authentic wood-fired pizza restaurant that has become a favorite in Hoosick Falls and beyond.
There will be an opening reception of Erdogan's latest work, "Horses," at 6 p.m. Saturday at the gallery at the 3rd Eye Gallery, 9 John St., Hoosick Falls. "Horses" will run through Dec. 20.
Erdogangrew up in Turkey, immigrating to the United States as a young man in 1988. He attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, graduating with a masters degree in design. Upon graduation, he became a commercial artist in the advertising field in New York, but was restless.
I got lost one day while driving, the day before my 45th birthday, and found myself up here in this beautiful town, in front of this wonderful old building on John Street.
As he grabbed his camera to take some photos of the town, he noticed a For Sale sign in the window of the very building hed parked in front of. I called the realtor right away. An hour later, she showed me the 16,000 square-foot building. Two years later, I owned the place.
There werent any plans for pizza, at least not right then.
It became a necessity later on as I was renovating the building. There werent any good food places around, any of the kind of food I wanted to have. I was mostly eating Stewarts and Cumberland Farms, food from the neighborhood gas stations. It became clear pretty quickly that this town needed some good food, some real pizza. When asked if making pizza was a passion of his, Erdogan says with a smile, Not making it, but eating it. The smile breaks into a full belly laugh.
Erdogan set up the gallery right next to BYTE. He was spending more and more time at both the restaurant and the gallery, crashing many nights upstairs in one of the lofts he created during the renovation. Eventually, as the pandemic worsened, he moved his family from Brooklyn.
The pandemic forced us to make a choice, he says. It was headed in that direction anyway. It wasnt easy being in both places. I have three kids.
Erdogan has been creating art his whole life. His art is diverse, from loose brush paintings of weird faces to more approachable subjects like birds in flight in drips of yellow and white paint. Just like birds, horses represent a symbol of freedom, power and strength. The difference is horses are grounded. They cant fly, he says, laughing.
When asked about his latest work, Erdogan becomes more serious. The last few years, with the pandemic weve been going through, I wanted to get out of the situation by pushing through it. Horses have that strength. All the horses Ive painted are running in the same direction, at the same exact moment in their run. Theyre in a full stretch. Theres no doubt, no looking back. They have a destination, and they want to get there, no matter what the obstacles are, stormy, sunny, no matter what.
When asked why thats so important to him, this message of the horses in motion, Erdogan looks down for a second, then straight ahead with piercing, blue eyes. We dont have much time, he says. Its not just COVID. Its global warming, too. Its a lot of things we take for granted. This is whats happening all around the world. We are running out of time.
And the hope? My hope is, we all have that same goal. I wish that the doubt out there, that we all believed in the science, that we face it together. My hope is that we can do the same together. We can push forward with strength and grace, that we can once again be free.
Gallery hours are Friday to Sunday, noon to 6 pm. For more information, contact 3rdeyegallery@gmail.com.

I’m an American mom who lived in Prague for 2 years. Children in the US have far less freedom than Czech children. – Yahoo News

Elizabeth Long
I'm a mom to two young boys and recently spent two years living in Prague.
Playgrounds in Prague are not for the faint of heart, and they make the ones in the US look boring.
Czech parents offer their children more freedom to explore and grow into themselves.
I've spent the past two years in Prague, and it's been fascinating to observe some of the different approaches to parenting as compared to what I've encountered in the United States.
As the mother of two young boys, it's always fascinated me how many different approaches there are to parenting.
I sometimes wonder if I'm too involved in the actions of my children, and it was through my observations of parents in Prague that I came to appreciate how different styles of parenting can affect a child's ability to explore, grow, and develop a sense of acceptable risk-taking.
The first difference that leaped out to me was the emphasis that Czech parents placed on spending time outdoors with their children.
I was told there is no such thing as bad weather. It's simply a matter of bad clothing if one is uncomfortable being outside in certain conditions.
Families could often be found hiking in rain, strolling with baby carriages in frigid temperatures, and embracing the priceless gems of all the nature surrounding them.
While many families in the US value spending time outdoors, my observation was that schedules often didn't permit lengthy outings, and that the weather could impede the willingness of children and parents to participate.
Another difference I saw was that Czech parents seemed to have a higher threshold for acceptable risk-taking by their children.
Playgrounds are a perfect example. They typically contain a climbing structure known as a spiderweb imagine a pyramid with each side constructed from a rope spiderweb soaring roughly 20 feet in the air as well as various balance challenges and other obstacles that would send many Americans running for their lawyers if such structures were to appear in the United States.
Story continues
Kids ride public transportation at ages far younger than in the United States.
They stay at home alone. They bike without chaperones. They hike, climb, fall, get hurt, and get up and do it again because they learn not to let the fall scare them.
Czech parents appear to let their children push boundaries in ways that the "helicopter parenting" style often found in the United States doesn't allow.
A final difference I saw was that Czech parents appeared to offer their children greater freedom to explore. Children run around neighborhoods freely. They scamper through forests and run across fields, often being far from parental eyesight.
Some restaurants offer play areas near the dining section, but many times out of view from the table.
Also, parents can often be found in prominent outdoor areas and cultural venues with children exploring nearby, but not underfoot.
In contrast, I found that my own metaphorical leash was tighter on my children in the United States. Perhaps there was a greater sense of personal safety in Prague. Perhaps I'm simply more attuned after my time abroad.
Regardless, I've repeatedly found myself tightening the hold on my kids since our return, and it's with an effort that I force myself to recall the lessons learned over the past two years to allow me to gift the greater freedom they desire to explore.
Different countries have different approaches to parenting, and we can learn from one another if we're willing to remain open-minded.

Change is coming and there is hope for Main South
I am responding to Ray Mariano's column, "This is not your father's Main South." It is transforming. Having grown up in Main South during the 50s and 60s I have to agree with Mr. Mariano but to a different degree; during those years, Main South was a safe and family-orientated neighborhood, people respected and cared about each other; three-deckers were owned and occupied by families (sometimes a relative on each floor,) kids were watched over not only by their parents but our neighbors. We were ableto play safely outside until dark, walk safely outside even after dark without the fear of being attacked or shot. Schools were a safe haven (Woodland Street, South High and St. Peter's.) Although we were not always fond of all of our teachers, we had respect for them along with our coaches and our parents. Then came the 70s and 80s. Many of the owners of the three-deckers in Main South passed away and their children moved away. Houses were sold to slum landlords and that along with the formation of gangs and drug activity became the beginning of the downfall of Main South. Yes, Mr.Mariano, we have seen a place were no one wanted to live, butnow, as you have stated, change is coming and there is hope that in the next few years we will see a transformation in Main South and it again may look like my father's Main South.
Kathy McTigue Gervais, Worcester
Democracy needs to be decided by the people.Which is why the Senate needs to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. This act makes it more possible for every voice to be heard. Democracy should not be decided by hokey map manipulation, or by who has the money to sway politicians. I urge anyone who would like to see our country come back together, to agree that the Right to Vote is the most necessary and absolute item for our democracy. Democrat or Republican all our voices matter. Please urge our congressional leaders to pass the Freedom to Vote act.

Wyoming House Freedom Caucus: This Was Not What The People Wanted – Kgab
Posted: at 1:11 pm
A group of conservative members of the Wyoming House of Representatives says the recent special session of the Wyoming Legislature on a federal vaccine mandate fell short of expectations.
That's according to Rep. Rachel Rodriguez-Williams [R-Park County], who posted a video on the House Freedom Caucus Facebook page. In her video, Rodriguez-Williams noted that the legislature only approved one bill. "House Enrolled Act 1 is not enough," Rodriguez-Williams said in the video.
She said that although the bill will provide resources and guidance for a court fight against the mandate "This is not what the people wanted." She added, "They wanted stronger legislation with exemptions, such as religious exemptions without a litmus test, medical exemptions approved by a physician, natural immunity, and prohibition on mandating authorization of emergency use vaccines."
Rodriguez-Williams also noted that when the session adjourned, Governor Mark Gordon chose to address the house in a letter "instead of standing before the body in person."
She went on to say that while the governor said that litigation is not a matter of sounding off "We believe that freedom does not come from litigation." She later added that there is a national effort underway to expand the powers of government and "We need leaders to sound off."
You can see the entire video below. The legislative session ran for a week in Cheyenne.
Several bills aimed at such things as allowing parents to get exemptions upon request for their children from school face mask mandates and vaccine requirements and a range of other bills against various COVID-19 related mandates failed to win final approval in the special session.

Forgery Crime And The Restrictions On A Criminal Judge’s Freedom Of Proof (Legal Alert 164) – Criminal Law – Egypt – Mondaq News Alerts

Forgery, can be defined as tampering with information throughdeletion, addition, or alteration in a manner that causesfundamental, change by one of the ways stipulated by law. Suchmodifications could potentially cause harm to others as they areintentionally founded on deceit.
Forgery may occur within a customary or official document, withan official document being defined as a document signed by a publicofficial who has the authority to do this as a result of the natureof his/her position.
The penalty for forgery of official documents is severe, sinceit constitutes aggression against the State's authority, a lossof trust in State issued documents, damage to the interests ofindividuals, and an overall breach of security and stability insociety.
In order to evaluate whether or not forgery generally exists, the following conditions must be met in totality: it must causeharm to others (for official documents, any change to the documentwould constitute a 'harm'), in addition to provingknowledge of the offense by the wrongdoer. Simply being inpossession of forged documents alone is not sufficient to establishthe knowledge of forgery without supporting evidence.
According to Article 302 of the Egyptian Criminal Procedure Law,a criminal judge shall rule in such cases, according to the beliefthat he has established through his own volition.
Although the law has not restricted the freedom of criminaljudges with regards to taking the steps necessary to reveal thetruth in a manner consistent with reason and logic, it has however, conditioned that a judgment cannot be issued, without submittingthe relevant evidence to the judge, Furthermore, a judge cannotrely on a witness in another case which was not tried before him,nor can rely on an investigation that has taken place before acivil court without a criminal investigation, otherwise thisconstitutes a violation of the right of defense and the judgmentshall be rendered void.
Herein, we refer to one of the cases that were handledby our office, wherein the accused was escalated to the CriminalProsecution's Office on the grounds of forgery of an officialdocument, based on the issuance of a final civil judgment whichallegedly proved this. During the trial, Maher Milad Iskandar, thedefendant's lawyer, argued that the documents in question werenot part of the criminal investigation at the time. He also arguedthat the witness's testimony could not be applied in civilinvestigations. Despite this, the court sentenced the accused to 10years in prison without responding to this defense.
Link to case: https://bit.ly/3nLJSmE
At the appeal level, the judgment was challenged on thegrounds that the judge adjudicated on the matter on the basis ofevidence and testimony of a witness which were not presented to himduring the hearing, and that in issuing their opinion, they hadalso relied on a ruling issued by the civil court claiming forgeryand upon the civil investigations without conducting a criminalinvestigation. Upon hearing the appeal, the Courtof Cassation decided to overturn the appealed judgment, taking intoaccount the reasons for the appeal, namely that a conviction forthe crime of forgery may not be based on a civil judgment, civilinvestigations, or the testimony of a witness not heard by thecourt, otherwise, the judgment would be void.
The content of this article is intended to provide a generalguide to the subject matter. Specialist advice should be soughtabout your specific circumstances.

Threats to freedom | Opinion | dailyitem.com – Sunbury Daily Item
Posted: at 1:11 pm
While writing a letter about the threat of the totalitarian nature of the left, I changed it to describe practices of both parties that are threats to everyones freedom.
It is apparent that the Republican Party has preached capitalism while standing for a crony oligarchic form, based on wealth and corporations; we certainly do not have real capitalism. In reading about the thoughts and philosophy of the founders, I think they would agree that the enormous and increasing disparity of wealth and taxation is a threat to democracy.
The Democrats are equally in league with the rich, but they do a better job pretending they are on the side of the people. (Witness how the Pelosis, who are worth $200+ million, made another $5 million recently by knowing about a pending bill.) Republicans supported an inexcusably skewed tax reduction bill that mostly benefited the rich of both parties, while greatly increasing the national debt and placing a greater burden on our children and grandchildren.
Frugality in public expenditures was previously a topic the party stood for, but now it does not even get lip service. Tax breaks for corporations are not a good policy in capitalism; it drives up costs for consumers and allows those at the top to get even more of the nations wealth. While some of these tax laws were written while Democrats controlled Ways and Means, Republicans never objected and pushed for them too. Tax breaks, contracts and outright grants have amounted to trillions in corporate welfare over the years. Despite this many of the biggest corporate beneficiaries also pay low wages, knowing public welfare will alleviate a little of its misery. Bidens recent propaganda that his two spending bills will cost nothing is specious at best as the debt will only increase further.
The size and power of corporations, supported by both parties, is a growing threat to the republic. Corporations have an outsized influence on what citizens see and hear, spending billions of dollars on legal bribery (called lobbying) which buys politicians and stymies criticism. When historically Republicans had the power to address growing monopolies they did not do so because they receive a lot of money from them; when Democrats had it they similarly failed. Now the internet and computer companies also protect themselves by giving money to both parties (the majority to Democrats) so they wont be stymied in their monopolies.
In the past, when newspapers were a means of investigation and sometimes true news, more variety meant more chances of learning about crimes and corruption. The internet has altered that by causing the loss of so many newspapers. The TV networks and the major newspapers pretending to report the news have now become forums for propaganda. Look at what they absolutely refuse to cover. Congress made a lot of noise about teenagers being negatively affected by Facebook and other social media, but they wont do anything about it.
A greater threat is their censoring opposing views. They are complicit with efforts of the government to delete even valid opposing medical viewpoints about the COVID business in the name of preventing misinformation but it has morphed into an attempt to suppress both all opposing viewpoints and any criticism of government officials. They also want to anoint (in a leaked Facebook memo) certain sacrosanct journalists as quasi-public officials who would be immune from criticism because they term such terrorism. Just look at the corruption unearthed by independent bloggers who dont accept corporate money and the cancellation threats these people are under. What was derided as conspiracy theory has so often proven to be true.
Doubt this? The recent arrest of a fourth criminal in the Russiagate investigation will get little or no coverage by the networks and large newspapers because it embarrasses a certain candidate for president they supported. How many know that Katie Couric censored the words of Ruth Ginsberg during an interview because she knew the words were too true? Anyone want to guess why we have heard so little about Hunter Bidens scams and little about George Soros, other billionaires and large corporations getting buckets of COVID relief money yet so many small businesses were driven out of existence?
It would behoove everyone to listen to the blogs of people like Joe Rogan, James Dore, Glen Greenwald, and Russell Brand. Listen to brave Black bloggers like AK Nation News, Thomas Sowell, Brandon Tatum, Ruined Leon, Greg Foreman of Black Conservative Perspective, Anthony Brian Logan and others to hear important items never covered by the bought mainstream media who instead love and regularly use race hustlers.
While I do not agree with some viewpoints of the left-wingers, at least they are honest as they critique everyone.
Dr. Thomas Modesto lives in Danville.

Conservative White Parents Want the Freedom to Ban Books – The New Republic
Posted: at 1:11 pm
Around the same time that the Goddard school district temporarily bent to the wishes of one irate parent, the Spotsylvania County School Board in Virginia ordered the removal of books deemed sexually explicit. Two parents, Christina and Robert Burris, had complained about the books on offer at school libraries, in particular books with LGBT themes. Results for gay, 172. Results for heterosexual, two, Christina Burris told the school board. She continued: One of the two books is actually Speak No Evil, Hear No Evil, which is about a Nigerian gay boy. Results for pedophilia, 16. Lesbian, 84. Jesus, 19, but half of them are about Muslims. (The book she referenced is in fact called Speak No Evil, by Uzodinma Iweala.) Apparently, pulling these books from the shelves wasnt enough for two of the countys school board members: I think those banned books should be thrown on the fire, Rabih Abuismail said, adding that keeping these books on the shelves meant schools would rather have our kids reading gay pornography than about Christ. Another school board member, Kirk Twigg, said he wanted to burn them so we can identify with our community that we are eradicating this bad stuff.
That same week, school officials in North Kansas City, Missouri, pulled two books with queer characters and themes, All Boys Arent Blue, by George M. Johnson, and Fun Home, by Alison Bechdel (novels also targeted by the Goddard parent), from high school libraries, after parents with the Northland Parent Association, a group that formed to fight school mask mandates but which has since branched out into book banning, loudly voiced their complaints. At one meeting at the end of October, James Richmond, the president of the Northland Parent Association, brought along enlarged pages from Bechdels graphic novel, and compared offering the book to committing a sexual crime. If I was to hand this material out to a minor or read or give any of these books to a minor, I would be charged with solicitation of a minor, Richmond said, before moving on to read aloud what he characterized as crap to the room. To Richmond, for the schools libraries even to have age-appropriate novels with LGBT characters and LGBT characters who think about and have sex on their shelves constituted grooming. (This is an idea that carries more than a whiff of Anita Bryants belief that gay and lesbian teachers wished to recruit schoolchildren, a central tenet of Save Our Children, her 1970s antigay rights campaign.) That is something you guys are pushing in our schools, he added. To another parent in the group, these novels were, again, pornography.

100th (and final) Freedom Rock to be installed at Adventureland – desmoinesregister.com

Warren County Veteran Memorial dedicated
Nearly 100 people gathered Aug. 29 to honor the dedication of the Warren County Veterans Memorial in Norwalk.
Des Moines Register
The 100th and final Freedom Rock mural will be placedat Adventureland in Altoona, closing out a years-long project.
Iowa artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II set out in 2013 to honor service members bypaintingmuralsdepicting military scenes on large bouldersin each of Iowa's 99 counties. Heachieved his goalearlier this yearwith the installation of a rock in Linn County.
The bonus mural at Adventureland will be the second in Polk County. The other is at an American Legion post in Bondurant.
Sorensen, a Republican state representative from Greenfield, said in a Facebook posting Thursday that he hoped to place the rock right in front of Adventureland by July 4, with further details to come. Sorensen painted his first rock mural in 1999 and has painted rocks in other states, as well.
Each rock is different and may reflect certain conflicts, honor the fallen or recognize a county's history. The only image that doesn't change is that of a Huey helicopter, made with paint mixed with the ashes of Vietnam veterans.
"I wanted each rock to be like a piece to a 99-piece puzzle, and I wanted to tap into their specific stories," Sorensen told the Des Moines Register in2020.

This Gun-Toting Freedom Activist Is Using Thousands of Colorado Schoolchildren to Own the Libs – Yahoo News

When the conspiracy theorist Cindy Ficklin applied to become a Colorado school superintendent six months ago, she had a photo of herself online holding a pistol.
It was either my Glock 42 or my Glock 43, she told The Daily Beast this week.
Ficklin had also posted a missive about a supposed global conspiracy among a super-rich elite led by billionaire George Soros.
If you dont know who George Soros is...youre not alone - (hes one of the monsters in the shadows), she wrote. Soros seems to control even the Rothchilds (who control all the banks in the world). Bill Gates is a Rothchid, btw. (I included his family tree as evidence.) And [Anthony] Faucio sits on the Board of Directors of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. And Fauici is head of NIH (National Institutes of Health)...which controls the use of Hydroxychloroquine and EVERYTHING we are being fed about this virus. ...INCLUDING THE MASK MANDATE - (which strips us of our identities and turns us into sheep.
Soros does not control the Rothschilds and Gates is not a member of that fabled family. Fauci is not on the Gates foundation board and the NIH does not oversee the use of hydroxychloroquine. And what masks do is save lives. This nonsense came from someone seeking to run the Mesa County Valley School District 51 and its 22,000 kids taught by 1,300 teachers.
Nobody who read Ficklins interlocking misapprehensions or saw the gun picture could be much surprised that the 47-year-old principal turned realtor did not get the job. She also failed in a bid to replace the five-member school boards lone conservative, an even-tempered math teacher and football coach named Paul Pitton.
But she was successful in leading an effort to install a new wave of conservative thinking individuals on the county school board. And, perhaps more alarming, she has now set her sights on the state legislature.
The triggering event for Ficklin was the Aug. 13 school board meeting that led to Pittons decision to resign. The meeting turned so tumultuous that he and his colleagues were accorded a protective police escort from the building. Anti-mandate folks using the guise of parents rights had become incensed when the board reduced the time for public comment.
Story continues
People are just getting too crazy, Pitton told The Daily Beast. I think ever since COVID came out it kind of brought out the worst in people.
Ficklin attended the meeting as a high school parent as well as a self-described freedom activist. She said people were already angry about the mandates and talk of gender fluidity and the supposed teaching of critical race theory.
It woke us up, she said. Isnt that an ironic term?
She says that those who had planned to speak had become outraged when the board cut the total time allocated for public comment from 45 minutes to 35 minutes.
It was just a loud group standing up, saying, Thats not OK, Ficklin insisted.
The board members had finished their executive session virtually. One of them was heard to say the folks who disrupted the meeting and necessitated the evacuation were insurrectionists.
A bad idea, Ficklin told The Daily Beast.
Ficklin says the remark had an incendiary effect. Attendance grew from 25 to 600 at the weekly Stand for the Constitution meetings of local conservatives at Appleton Church that Ficklin had helped organize. She was a leader in an effort to unseat the three school board members who were up for re-election and install candidates to their liking.
We decided we really needed to have conservative thinking individuals, she said. We organized and mobilized. We knocked on thousands of doors. It was fully grassroots.
The election was so close that the outcome was not certain until 4 a.m. the following day.
We got all three, Ficklin said. That gives us the majority.
Seven other Colorado county school boards also flipped to conservative and anti-mandate even as a mystery COVID-19 surge was filling the states hospitals near to the breaking point. An indication of where the new majority will take Mesa was expected to come Saturday at the second School Board Coffee held since they were suspended by the pandemic. Ficklin announced on Friday that she would be giving what she termed a speech to the outgoing board members.
Back when I was a school principal, if my teaching staff came to me with a problem I told them to always come with at least one viable solution, Ficklins prepared remarks began. We have lots of problems in the school district. And thank God we flipped our school board so that we can actually work toward ameliorating those problems.
Parents on both sides of the great divide would agree with her call for better pay for teachers and better treatment for subs. She also cites the need for better food service and she is organizing for parents to pitch in. Such efforts can bring people together.
But her top priority, her first suggestion under SOLUTIONS!!!, was divisively political.
Start with letting go the HEFTILY PAID Executive Director of Equity and Inclusion, she said.
Ficklin also said, FIRE teachers who sexualize our childrenFIRE teachers who make the kids feel badly about themselves.
Those would apparently include teachers who delve into such matters as race and gender identity.
Her remarks as prepared did not touch on masks or vaccine. But she has declared her opposition to mandates of any kind. Never mind if they save lives.
I want to fight for freedom and liberty, she said.
And Ficklin is sure to talk about that as she begins to campaign for House District 55 in the state legislature, a move she framed as a sort of revenge for the school board rejecting her and her views.
Alright. Fine. You know what? I just went ahead and I filed my paperwork today and I am now announcing for House District 55 state representative, she said in a video posted on Facebook. Were going to make sure that this never happens again because this was wrong on every single level, and its not OK that the school board can go and do that to a community. We are going to make sure that we take this state back and this country back and this school district back.
She later appeared to admit that she did not quite know how to behave as a political candidate.
I am struggling making the transition from freedom-activist to candidate, she said in an online post. So Ive decided just to be myself in all of it.
Hey, if Mesa County can join in sending Lauren Boebert to Washington as the U.S. representative from Colorados 3rd Congressional District, why not send a gun-toting conspiracy theorist to the statehouse as well?
In the meantime, Ficklin says she had no idea that some people might take her remarks concerning Soros and his supposed cabal as antisemitic.
I was super upset for about five days that anybody talking about wealthy elite families taking over the world is antisemitic, she said. I support Israel.
She also denied allegations online that she is a Q-Anon follower.
Im put in that category because I had attended different meetings where Q-Anon conspirators were also in attendance, she said. But, I am not a Q-Anon conspirator.
She is, however, a purveyor of falsehoods in a growing grass roots movement rife with them that threatens what our kids learn in what should be sanctuaries of truth.
