Sculpture by Zenos Frudakis in Philadelphia
Freedom is a bronze public sculpture in the form of a large slab and a freestanding statue by American sculptor Zenos Frudakis, installed in 2000 outside the offices of GlaxoSmithKline in central Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sculpture bears an inscription that encourages viewers to pose for a photograph in an empty cavity.
The sculptor, Zenos Frudakis, wanted to make a sculpture that centered around the idea of breaking free.[1][a] The slab is said to represent freedom from all restrictions: mental, political, religious, and physical.[3]It has been called a "visual metaphor for the process of transformation".[4]
The sculpture, completed in 2000 and dedicated on June 18, 2001,[2] consists of a 20-by-8-foot-long (6.1m 2.4m) bronze slab weighing 7,000 pounds (3,200kg) and a freestanding bronze statue.[3] It is installed on a wall outside the GlaxoSmithKline offices in Philadelphia.[5]
Freedom centers around four human figures who appear to be freeing themselves from the slab. There is one cavity on the slab from which a human figure has broken free, and where Frudakis left the inscription "stand here" as an invitation for viewers to pose for a photograph by standing inside the cavity.[6]
Frudakis cast his own face and his sculpting tools as part of the artwork, and included depictions of twenty-five people and a feline in the bronze.[1]
Freedom has been recognized as one of the best public art sculptures.[6] Architectural Digest called it one of the "28 of the Most Fascinating Public Sculptures" in 2019.[7]
Writing in The Independent in 2021, John Rentoul ranked the sculpture fifth on his top-ten list of best public artworks.[5]

Defining Freedom – Signature Theatre
Posted: at 12:09 am
Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.
George Orwell, 1984
We read about freedom, dream about freedom, celebrate the idea of freedom, advocate and hope for freedom, but what do we mean by freedom?
Freedom means many things to many people. Freedom can mean having the opportunity to vote for particular ideas or for people who best represent our views. Freedom can refer to the concept of freedom of speech: the ability to freely voice personal opinions or perspectives. Others may understand freedom in a financial context, where people seek to free themselves of financial debt, outstanding credit and burdensome loans.
But what does true freedom look like? Does it look like a voters ballot or someone walking out of prison? Is it seen in being able to buy anything a person wants or in owing anything to anyone?
Freedom is defined by Merriam Webster as the quality or state of being free, such as:
Freedom is more complicated than being able to do whatever we want. Taken too far, that approach would lead to dangerous anarchyevery person for themselves! Certainly freedom can mean the right to do, think, believe, speak, worship, gather, or act as one pleases, but only until your choices start to infringe on another persons freedoms.
Consider each of our freedoms as fitting into one of two categories: freedoms of and freedoms from. This point was made by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in his State of the Union Address delivered on January 6, 1941:
We look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
The first is freedom of speech and expression everywhere in the world.
The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way everywhere in the world.
The third is freedom from want which, translated into world terms, means economic understandings which will secure to every nation a healthy peacetime life for its inhabitantseverywhere in the world.
The fourth is freedom from fear which, translated into world terms, means a world-wide reduction of armaments to such a point and in such a thorough fashion that no nation will be in a position to commit an act of physical aggression against any neighboranywhere in the world.
That is no vision of a distant millennium. It is a definite basis for a kind of world attainable in our own time and generation.
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Delivers the State of the Union in 1941
In the same speech, Roosevelt said:
There is nothing mysterious about the foundations of a healthy and strong democracy. The basic things expected by our people of their political and economic systems are simple. They are:
These are the simple, basic things that must never be lost sight of in the turmoil and unbelievable complexity of our modern world. The strength of our economic and political systems is dependent upon the degree to which they fulfill these expectations.
In other words, if the nation loses its liberties, freedoms and opportunities, the nation shall be no more.
Securing freedom from fear and freedom from want almost always includes collective, organized action. That kind of activity is often carried out most effectively and efficiently (although, admittedly, not perfectly) by a governing body of some sort. If we want to live in a society where freedoms are protected and where the opportunity to exercise freedom is assured, we have to rely on some form of governance.
Section Objective: Students will define what freedom means to them and express an appreciation for and understanding of some of the freedoms and rights allotted to United States citizens.

Peace Through Strength Requires Economic Freedom – The Wall Street Journal
Posted: at 12:09 am
As the U.S. pounds plowshares into swords for a second Cold War, lessons from the first one may serve those who care to consider them. The American policy of peace through strength, market-driven economic growth, and open trade defeated the Soviet Union. The emerging conflict with China, excepting the military threat to Taiwan, will for the foreseeable future be almost entirely economic. That will make it unlike the military conflicts with the Soviet Union and its proxies in Eastern Europe, Korea, Vietnam, Cuba and countless global insurrections. If the U.S. maintains peace through strength, it can lose this struggle only by forfeiting the source of its economic success: economic freedom.
China is currently expanding government dominance of its economy and suffering a concomitant reduction in economic growth, tech-stock valuations and employment. If President Biden and Congress have their way, Chinese-style industrial and antitrust policies will soon come to the U.S. The America Competes Act is the Houses effort to outdo the Chinese Communist Partys latest five-year plan. The 2,900-page bill would make an old Soviet commissar blush. The Senate version of the bill is better, but why would Republicans try to compete with China in a way they know doesnt work when they are heavily favored to win back control of Congress in November?

Freedom is a blessing, but it is not free – St. Louis American
Posted: at 12:09 am
As we close another Black History month, I have been thinking about celebrations that center around those who fought to advance equal rights and freedom for Black and brown people.
Without trailblazing leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Dred and Harriet Scott, and so many more who stood their ground in the face of racism and oppression, we would not be where we are today; I would not be the first Black woman mayor of St. Louis without them.
I signed a bill passed by the Board of Aldermen to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, a law that disproportionately targeted people of color. We have new community violence intervention programs that keep people of color from unnecessarily entering the revolving door of incarceration. Were working to develop affordable single-family homes...
However, this month, I have also taken time to read Nikole Hannah-Jones The 1619 Project, which takes a heartbreaking dive into the origins of the African slave trade in the Americas over 400 years ago. With every essay in this book, I see more clearly how many modern policies are still rooted in the same philosophy as those developed centuries ago to uphold white supremacy and hold our communities back.
One chapter introduces us to former U.S. Vice President John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. He was known as the intellectual forefather of the Confederacy. Like many Republican controlled legislatures, Calhoun scoffed at federal supremacy over states, and believed any state could simply decide which federal laws it did not want to follow. Calhoun went even further, stating that liberty was only granted to property owners, slave owners, and was something to be earned. It was not a blessing for all.
This was echoed in the same cry of liberty by insurrectionists, white supremacists, and those who spread fear and misinformation because they are threatened by the continued liberation of people of color.
I ran to be mayor because I believe that freedom actually is a blessing and not something earned based on merit or status. But freedom also requires the willpower to reverse decade upon decade of policies designed intentionally to hold our communities back, even as we face preemption laws at the state level to inhibit our ability to enact meaningful policies that keep us safe and financially secure.
I remember growing up and playing with my friends and cousins in the Wells-Goodfellow, Hamilton Heights, and Walnut Park neighborhoods. I witnessed first-hand how white flight ravaged our communities. Those who feared desegregation fled. Good jobs, healthy food options, and safe streets disappeared with them, without any intervention from state or local leaders.
I believe we can create our own blessings. In December, I signed a bill passed by the Board of Aldermen to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana, a law that disproportionately targeted people of color. We have new community violence intervention programs that keep people of color from unnecessarily entering the revolving door of incarceration. Were working to develop affordable single-family homes that will get St. Louis back on track to create a whole new generation of homeowners and help families build generational wealth.
We are starting to break from the past and create a new normal where everyone is given a fighting chance.
I want St. Louis to win again and make our city a place where families can enjoy the amenities that bind neighborhoods together, where we have equal access to city services, and where our children can safely play outside until the streetlights come on.
While we still have so much work to do to reverse decades of oppression, I believe that as we count our blessings, and put in the work to make our own blessings, we will truly be free.
Tishaura O. Jones is the first Black woman mayor in city of St. Louis history.

Doers to Donors: Jeff Sandefer on the Power of Freedom in Education – Philanthropy Magazine
Posted: at 12:09 am
In the second episode of Philanthropy Roundtables Doers to Donors interview series, Roundtable President and CEO Elise Westhoff interviews entrepreneur, teacher and philanthropist Jeff Sandefer, co-founder of Acton Academy and the Acton School of Business.
Sandefer, founder of the successful oil and gas company Sandefer Offshore and energy investment firm Sandefer Capital Partners, grew up in Abilene, Texas, and learned about risk and reward at a young age on the sweltering Texas oil fields. His father engaged in wildcatting, a form of exploratory drilling that Sandefer said either paid off handsomely or not at all. He became an entrepreneur at age 16, launching a business painting silver oil tankers on lease.
Sandefer later earned a petroleum and gas degree from University of Texas and an MBA from Harvard University, where he learned about the Socratic method a teaching tactic he would employ many times in his life, first as a professor at the University of Texas, then with the Acton School of Business MBA program and Acton Academy. His entrepreneurial and teaching pursuits, coupled with his desire as a parent to provide the best opportunities for his own children, have led to decades of work in K-12 and higher education, where his programs have benefited thousands of children.
In a wide-ranging discussion with Westhoff, Sandefer talks about entrepreneurship, philanthropy, education and the advice he would give entrepreneurs on how to make their philanthropy effective.
Following are some highlights of this discussion, which can be viewed in full here.
Acton Academy: Where Every Student is a Genius
Sandefer and his wife Laura founded Acton Academy, a global network of innovative K-12 schools that encourage students to be curious, independent, lifelong learners.
In his conversation with Westhoff, Sandefer said the mission of the academy, which has 300 locations in 25 countries, is centered around the idea that every student is a genius.
We believe that every person who enters our door is a genius who deserves to find a calling that will change the world, he said, adding, Thats really at the core of everything we do.
That concept is evident in Acton Academys operation as a one-room schoolhouse, where often theres only one teacher per school.
Westhoff asked Sandefer how students react to the amount of freedom they are afforded. In response, Sandefer relayed an encounter with a young student who greeted him one day when he visited an Acton school in North Carolina.
I asked him the question, Whats the most important thing about Acton Academy? And he said, Freedom, Sandefer recalled. Then after a long pause, the student added, Freedom comes with responsibility.
That young man was five-and-a-half-years-old. Thats what we see over and over and over again. If you provide freedom with responsibility and the right guardrails, then you get out of the way, amazing things happen, Sandefer said.
Acton Childrens Business Fair: Sandefers Single Best Thing
Sandefer is also deeply engaged in Acton Childrens Business Fair a collection of one-day fairs in 331 cities that promote businesses created and launched by children.
According to Sandefer, this fair is the single best thing he and his family have done as entrepreneurs. The event was inspired by Sandefers two boys, Charlie and Sam, who came to him one day and said they no longer wanted to run a lemonade stand. Instead, they wanted to host an event for other young business owners to help them sell their products and services.
Seven aspiring entrepreneurs showed up at the first fair, including Charlie and Sam. Despite its modest beginnings, the Sandefer family decided to make it a tradition, and grew the Acton Childrens Business Fair to over 200 booths selling products and services to 5,000 people. The fair now offers a launch kit for others interested in starting a childrens business fair of their own. Thus far, 1,018 Acton Childrens Business Fairs have been held in 16 countries around the word.
[The kids] say the best thing about the business fair isnt learning economics or learning to open a checking account. Its to speak to an adult, to shake their hand and have the courage to talk to them as if youre on the same plane, Sandefer told Westhoff.
The Acton Business School: Expect to Earn It
While the Acton Academy focuses on students in elementary through high school, Sandefers Acton School of Business was, until recently, an MBA program dubbed boot camp for entrepreneurs.
Founded by Sandefer and his former colleagues at the University of Texas, the Acton School of Business offered a rigorous, 100 hour per week program that hosted Navy SEALs, Olympic athletes and aspiring entrepreneurs.
Professors told Acton Business School students at the outset: Expect to earn it. For those willing to put in the work, the school promised an education that was better, faster, less expensive and most importantly, more meaningful than anything offered by traditional business schools.
Despite the accolades it earned, the Acton School of Business recently stopped offering its signature MBA program and transitioned to a new platform designed to help students find careers.
We all know that disruption is taking place in higher education, Sandefer said. We decided to disrupt ourselves. We gave back our MBA accreditation and we want to try something called the Next Great Adventure.
The Next Great Adventure will engage budding entrepreneurs between the ages of 17 and 24 in a series of challenges over six weeks to help you find your calling, accelerate your life and live a life of meaning. Those challenges will culminate in a TedX-style forum, where participants will pitch ideas to bring these next great adventures to life.
[Theyll] say thats where Im headed. This is why it matters to the world. If you help me, this is what I promise in return, Sandefer said.
Participants will be provided mentors to help guide their journey and could receive up to $100,000 from Sandefers foundation to bring their ideas to life.
Advice for Philanthropists: Respect What Works
On his philanthropy, Sandefer credited Philanthropy Roundtable with guiding many of his decisions, particularly concerning donor intent. He also said he pays attention to others who have been successful.
The thing Ive learned from philanthropy, at least from our failed philanthropy, is paying attention and giving great respect to what works in the world. You want to change the status quo, but you also want to look at the models that work, he said.
Moreover, he believes in getting deeply involved in his charitable efforts.
Listening to people about what they want, investing in them personally, being in the trenches doing the work, thats far more important than money, he concluded.
