Santorum says freedom, not jobs, is key

MOLINE, Ill., March 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum said Monday freedom, not the jobless rate, is the key issue in the 2012 election.
In a campaign speech the day before the Illinois primary election, in which he is chasing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania said his candidacy is "more foundational" than the ups-and-downs of the economy, CBS News reported.
"We need a candidate who's going to be a fighter for freedom. Who's going to get up and make that the central theme in this race because it is the central theme in this race," Santorum told about 200 supporters in Moline. "I don't care what the unemployment rate's going to be. Doesn't matter to me. My campaign doesn't hinge on unemployment rates and growth rates. It's something more foundational that's going on."
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul responded in an e-mail to reporters that Santorum's remarks show him to be an "economic lightweight."
"Wow. Sen. Santorum may not care about the unemployment rate in this country or the nearly 24 million Americans struggling for work, but Mitt Romney does and is running to get people back to work," Saul said. "If anyone needed evidence that Rick Santorum is an economic lightweight, they needn't look any further than his various statements today."
CBS said Santorum later told reporters, "Of course I care about the unemployment rate."
"I want the unemployment rate to go down, but I'm saying, my candidacy doesn't hinge on whether the unemployment rate goes up and down," he said. "Our candidacy's about something that transcends that; it's about freedom, it's not about, you know, Gov. Romney's idea that he's going to fix the economy, which is something that, of course, we as Republicans don't believe that presidents fix the economy; we believe that we try to do things to create an atmosphere for the economy to fix itself."
Polls have shown Romney leading Santorum heading into the Illinois primary, with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas trailing well behind. Fifty-four of Illinois' 69 delegates are at stake in the primary, with the remainder to be apportioned at the GOP's state convention. Santorum isn't registered in all of Illinois' congressional district so the most delegates he could win is 44.

BURNABY, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Viscount Systems (OTC Markets:VSYS), a leading edge high technology supplier of security systems and software today is pleased to announce that Viscounts Freedom has been selected to secure its first US Department of Homeland Security agency facility.
We are very pleased that the top echelon of US Government agencies are now recognizing the benefits of Freedom compared to traditional control panel architecture, noted Stephen Pineau, CEO of Viscount Systems. In addition to cost savings, Freedom eliminates the cyber security vulnerabilities of panels and our new unified Microsoft Active Directory platform provides a simplified and more secure architecture for administering the system. The Freedom platform is Cloud ready and Microsoft Azure compatible to allow a seamless migration. Finally, physical security at US Government facilities is being driven by the requirement to be compliant with the new FIPS 201 standard and there are estimates that tens of thousands of systems will be required to be upgraded in the coming years. With the budgetary issues facing government agencies, Freedom is incredibly well positioned as a fully compliant, cloud based and low cost alternative to become a major factor in the US Government physical security market.
This project involves the potential deployment of approximately 300 US government sites which expands our total potential deployments to close to 1500 US government facilities based on other pilot projects underway. We expect this number to increase rapidly through the coming months. The typical revenue per site should average approximately $10,000.

ESGR Announces Nominations for 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award
Posted: at 6:08 pm
ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a Department of Defense agency, received 3,236 nominations for the 2012 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award. The Freedom Award is the Department of Defenses highest recognition for employers supporting members of the Guard and Reserve. Up to 15 recipients will be announced this summer and honored in Washington, D.C. on September 20 at the 17th annual Freedom Award Ceremony.
Guard and Reserve members, or family members acting on their behalf, nominated their civilian employers for the Freedom Award during the 12-week nomination season. Guard and Reserve members, who stand ready to serve whenever our Nation needs them, often put their civilian lives on hold when they answer the call to duty. Supportive employers provide a tremendous amount of stability and peace of mind to these Citizen Warriors and their families, enabling them to continue their dedicated service to our country.
"Guardsmen and Reservists continue to receive outstanding support from their employers," said ESGR National Chair James G. Rebholz. "America's employers have not wavered in their commitment to these Citizen Warriors."
Almost one-half of the U.S. military is comprised of the Guard and Reserve, and while most employers proudly support their military employees, Freedom Award recipients go above and beyond what is required by law. Last years recipients were nominated for superior acts of support including driving a deployed employees children to school, replacing a military employees broken family refrigerator while he was serving abroad, and working overtime to cover a service members shifts so he could take part in military training.
A list of nominations from all 50 states, U.S. territories and the District of Columbia are available at http://www.FreedomAward.mil. Semifinalists for the 2012 Freedom Award will be announced later next month.
About ESGR and the Freedom Award:
The Freedom Award was instituted in 1996 under the auspices of ESGR to recognize exceptional support from the employer community. In the years since, 160 employers have been honored with the award. Established as a DoD agency 40 years ago, ESGR develops and maintain employer support for Guard and Reserve service. ESGR advocates relevant initiatives, recognizes outstanding support, increases awareness of applicable laws, and resolves conflict between service members and employers. Paramount to ESGR's mission is encouraging employment of Guardsmen and Reservists who bring integrity, global perspective and proven leadership to the civilian workforce.
For questions or interviews regarding the Freedom Award, please contact Beth Sherman, ESGR Public Affairs, at 571-372-0705 or by email at ESGR-PA@osd.mil.

Freedom Energy – SR-139 Process Patent Application Update
Posted: at 6:08 pm
FORT WAYNE, Ind., March 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Freedom Energy Holdings, Inc. (Pinksheets: FDMF.PK - News) announced today that the company has retained Michael W. Goltry, of Parsons & Goltry, Patent and Trademark Attorneys at Law, Phoenix, Arizona, to provide the patent application for FDMF's proprietary asphalt shingle recycling technology SR-139.
Michael W. Goltry holds a chemistry degree from the College of Idaho and a law degree from Brigham Young University. After graduating law school, Michael moved to Washington, D.C, where he was a judicial law clerk for Chief Judge Frank Q. Nebeker of the United States Court of Appeals for Veteran's Claims. Michael is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and for over 12 years has prepared and prosecuted trademark applications, and patent applications relating to a wide variety of technological fields including the communications, chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, mechanical, electrical, electromechanical, computer, computer software, and semiconductor fields. Michael is a frequent lecturer on patents and trademarks, is an active member of the state bar of Arizona, is an affiliate member of the state bar of Idaho, and is an a avid fly-fisherman. http://www.patentsavers.com
Brian Kistler, Chief Executive Officer, Freedom Energy Holdings commented, "I am glad to announce that the wheels for the patent application are fully in motion. After conducting the initial investigation, Mr. Goltry agreed to move forward with the application. His firm has been fully retained and has prepared an initial draft of the patent application and we are reviewing the contents for accuracy. I fully expect to file the final application very shortly to gain the term patent pending when describing the SR-139."
"I continue to receive new inquiries weekly from other shingle recyclers both domestically and internationally. Once the process is fully operational and the finished product is being produced, the true value of SR-139 will be recognized. Our joint venture with CSSR has been suspended by mutual agreement. Evidently the task to engineer and build proved to be more daunting than originally thought. We are continuing to nurture and develop relationships within the asphalt shingle recycling industry, which is at its infancy. This is only a minor setback and will prove to be advantageous for Freedom and our shareholders. With our recently announced Investment Banking agreement with DME Securities, funding for the mechanical design will hopefully follow and we will be able to complete the engineering and design without outside assistance. Should there be any questions please feel free to contact me," Kistler concluded.

When freedom is 4,000 miles away

Marieme, who escaped from slavery in Mauritania and arrived in America in 1997, lives a simple but joyful life in Cincinnati.
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
Editor's note: Mauritania was the last country to abolish slavery. This story is part of a special report, "Slavery's Last Stronghold."
Cincinnati (CNN) -- On a cul-de-sac behind a strip mall in an anonymous neighborhood of this Midwestern city is an incredible story of escape from slavery.
Marieme's neighbors don't know her history. She mostly keeps to herself in her modest stucco house, 4,000 miles from her native Mauritania. Her six children know their mother's story well. She rescued them from slavery, too.
They are living a life they never could have hoped for in Mauritania, where an estimated 10% to 20% of people are enslaved.
The horrors Marieme endured as a slave in West Africa still dominate her dreams and flood her eyes at unexpected moments. In her first attempt to escape, she ran for two days and two nights through the Sahara Desert, barefoot, only to arrive at the home of another slave owner, who returned her to her master.
"They did everything to keep me from running away. See, they branded me so I wouldn't walk any more," she says in French, lifting up her fuchsia dress to show large patches of scar tissue on her calves and knees, caused by a metal poker. "But it's God that helped me."
A CNN reporter and videographer visited Marieme, 55, shortly after traveling to Mauritania to document slavery in a place where it is arguably more prevalent and more ingrained than anywhere else in the world. After witnessing the bleak reality there, we wanted to hear from someone who had risen up against the odds -- who had escaped not only her master but her country.
How had she done it? Who helped her along the way? And how did she end up in Ohio? We hoped to uncover a sort of formula for freedom. Perhaps parts of it could be replicated by hundreds of thousands of others.

MORGANTON Freedom dug an early hole and could never recover in an 11-4 baseball nonconference loss to McDowell High on Wednesday.
The Titans completed a season sweep to improve to 4-2 on the campaign.
McDowell jumped to an 8-0 advantage through 2 innings.
Freedom, which was shut out in Tuesdays 10-inning affair with Shelby, scored in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Dalton McGalliard singled to left field and moved to third on a throwing error by McDowell shortstop Dylan Ricketts on an infield grounder by the Patriots Keith Hicks.
FHS leadoff batter Marcus Kincaid rifled a RBI single to left field to score McGalliard. Hicks speed moved him to third, and an errant pickoff attempt by Titans catcher Jared Carver allowed Hicks to scamper home with the Pats second run.
McDowell added three more runs in the fourth on a walk, double, single, stolen base, error and wild pitch.
In the fourth inning, Freedom put together three consecutive hits. Sophomore catcher Jacob Honeycutt singled to left-center. Third baseman Zach Hawkins followed with a single to left McGalliard hit a RBI single to plate Honeycutt.
We talked about executing when we have runners on base. Weve got to continue to focus and get these runners home, Freedom coach Clint Zimmerman said.
Early on I thought we had a little bit of a lull from Tuesdays 10-inning game. We woke up in the fourth but we just cant wait because we were already in a huge hole.

Council rewrites freedom camping rules
Posted: March 16, 2012 at 7:39 pm
IAN ALLEN
A proposed draft by-law on freedom camping in Marlborough will reverse existing legislation that prohibits freedom camping in the district except for designated areas.
The new by-law would allow freedom camping across Marlborough, except for designated areas.
The Marlborough District Council would also have the power to issue $200 spot fines under the proposed legislation.
Members of the council assets and services committee voted at their regular meeting yesterday to recommend to the full council that the proposed draft by-law be put out for public consultation.
Council reserves and amenities manager Rosie Bartlett said the new by-law was the opposite of the existing law. There would still be restrictions in place where freedom camping was allowed, she said.
Prohibited areas include the townships of Blenheim, Picton, Havelock, Seddon and Renwick, Queen Charlotte Dr, Kenepuru and French Pass roads and council reserves.
The public consultation process might highlight other areas where freedom camping should be banned, Ms Bartlett said.
"We are really keen to hear from the public to learn about other problem areas that we don't know about."
Freedom camping had increased in Marlborough, Ms Bartlett said.

Syria and Libya: Two paths to freedom
Posted: at 2:51 am
15 March 2012 Last updated at 20:27 ET By Rana Jawad BBC News, Tripoli
People in Libya and Syria both rose up to overthrow decades of tyrannical rule. A year on, why are they living two very different realities?
There was a time during the Libyan uprising when Libyans worriedly stared at the screens.
They watched events unfold in Syria after their own moves to rise against a man who brutally suppressed them for decades.
Although they understood the Syrian cries for freedom, they worried that the world's attention would swiftly shift to President Bashar al-Assad's lethal crackdown.
They worried that their battle and their needs would be forgotten and Syria would become a priority. How wrong they were.
Was it simply easier for outside observers to unite against Col Muammar Gaddafi, a man who appeared to the world as a dishevelled loon, as opposed to Mr Assad's suave looks and measured public tone?
It certainly made it easier for the UN Security Council to pass a resolution on Libya that paved the way for intervention.
However, there were bigger factors at play.
Though all the recent uprisings in the Arab world have the shared thread of freedom running through them, the joins between them are not all seamless.
