Jessica Harrington's dual-purpose performer showed smart form over hurdles last winter, but was well beaten in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and subsequently at Fairyhouse.

He ran with more encouragement when third behind Fame And Glory back on the level in the Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan and he was the 15-8 favourite for this two-mile handicap.

Sensibly settled towards the rear by Fran Berry as outsider Cloone Rocket set a ferocious pace, Steps To Freedom made gradual headway through the field.

He quickened up to lead heading towards the furlong marker and soon put the race to bed, passing the post with four and a half lengths in hand over Night Glimmer. Rattan and Norah Starr filled the places.

Harrington said: "I'm absolutely delighted and to do that under 10st 3lb is a good performance. I've been stymied with the wet summer, with all my horses in fact.

"He settled brilliantly. He is entered in the Challenge Stakes at Leopardstown next Thursday and also in the Ebor at York and the Irish St Leger so he has plenty of options.

"We'll wait and see where the ground is good. He's a very good Flat stayer and in the autumn will go back over hurdles and hopefully we'll have a fine spring next year."

Freedom bounces back

MORGANTON --

On Monday night at the Greensboro Coliseum, recent Freedom High graduate Rob Noyes will become the first Patriot boys player under seventh-year coach Casey Rogers to participate in the N.C. East-West All-Star Game.

The 64th annual boys contest which pits the top 10 seniors on either side of the state will begin at 8:30 p.m. after the completion of the girls game. Rogers, who played in the game in 1998 after leading the Pats to a 4A state title as point guard, has relayed to Noyes what he can expect.

I told him its guard-oriented, Rogers said. Theyre not going to draw up many plays for you like I did, so hit the glass like a wild man.

The focal point defensively for anyone playing Freedom the last two seasons, Noyes said he welcomes the lack of attention.

I know its going to be fast-paced, said Noyes, who signed in April to play college ball at Lenoir-Rhyne. A lot of shooting, a lot of running. I like to run. I think theres defense but a lot more offense.

Noyes led Freedom in both those facets of the game during his junior and senior seasons as the team compiled a 47-10 record, claiming the South Mountain 2A/3A Conference (SMAC) regular-season and tournament titles as well as a 3A West Regionals bid this past winter.

The 6-foot-6 center averaged 17.0 points, 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocks in 2011-12 en route to numerous accolades. Noyes was named SMAC player of the year, first team All-Region 10, All-State 3A by NCPreps.com, All-3A West Regional, All-Burke County Christmas Invitational and first team All-County by The News Herald.

Rogers said its no surprise what Noyes accomplished.

Right away in the workouts before his junior year, I knew what he could become, Rogers said. He wont be outworked. And as good a player as he is, hes a better person. Hes one of the best teammates Ive ever seen in my time as a player or coach.

Freedom Reigns at Dundalk

Freedom Festival is dead.

It never secured a contract to bring tens of thousands of people to Fantasy of Flight just before the Republican National Convention. It suspended ticket sales. Its spokesmen stopped returning calls.

And this week, its website started automatically redirecting visitors to the Liberty Avengers, a new group with plans for its own pre-RNC event.

The avengers include some of the same Ron Paul-inspired organizers who started with Paul Festival 2012 still on track for three days of music and activism at the Florida State Fairgrounds and who later moved on to Freedom Festival over differences with the Paul Festival team.

Now that Freedom Festival has fizzled, some activists have transferred their efforts to an event called Liberty Unplugged.

"We just really wanted something to happen this weekend, so we don't lose all the momentum that's been created," Liberty Avengers co-founder David Foster of Tallahassee said.

Meanwhile, Golden Lilac is viewed by many as something of a certainty for the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes, but John Oxxs Alanza is taken to spoil her party at Newmarket today as well as her compatriot, the Aidan OBrien-trained Maybe.

Having won over 10 furlongs last year and an extended nine on her return to action when beating Cirrus Des Aigles, there is a small chance Golden Lilac could be caught for speed.

There is no doubt she is the classiest horse in the race, but she is priced up accordingly whereas Oxxs Alanza appears to have gone under the radar. She won three on the bounce last season and that the Aga Khan left her in training suggests Oxx believes he can get a big win out of her and after a pipe-opener behind Emulous, she was a comfortable winner of a Group Three last time.

Impressive Steps To Freedom in control at Dundalk

The phrase freedom of the press is perhaps so familiar that its historical origin, and its possible meanings, can be overlooked.

The press to which it refers is often identified by many in England with the big-P Press of Fleet Street: the professional journalists who have press cards and go along to press awards; the very sort of people who we imagine once upon a time wore press hats, were inspired by Scoop, and regularly gossiped and drank at El Vinos.

Here, the freedom of the press is the general right of the gentlemen and ladies of the Fourth Estate to do as they wish without impediment.

But this may not be the best way of understanding the term. In fact, the expression freedom of the press significantly predates the existence of the modern newspaper industry, which was largely a product of the late 1800s and early 1900s. Instead, the expression freedom of the press came out of the great age of pamphleteering and protest which occurred during and after the civil wars in Britain of the mid-1600s. The actual formulation seems to have been first used in the 1660s, although the concept was promoted emphatically a couple of decades before by John Milton in his Areopagitica of 1644.

So when the term was first deployed it was not a label for the privileges of any big P Press consisting of a professional journalistic class working on a finite number of publications, for such a class of people did not then exist. It would appear to have had a more straightforward meaning: it described the general right of every person to have access to and make use of (literally) a press so as to publish to the world at large, without the intervention of licensors or censors.

In this way freedom of the press was not some entitlement of a media elite but a more basic right of anyone to circulate their ideas more widely than they could do simply by themselves.

And this general freedom was crucial. Before the rise of newspapers, and long before the extensions of the franchise and the existence of telecommunications and broadcast media, any right to free expression would have had little effect if all what one said or wrote was limited to being received by those around you and your correspondents. The ability to physically mass publish material was the key means by which wider circulation could be gained for a contribution on a matter of general importance.

If freedom of the press is taken with this meaning then its application to internet-based communication is obvious. Computers, mobile telephones, and tablets have replaced presses as the means by which any person can publish their opinions to the world and assert unwelcome facts in the face of the powerful. Accordingly, blogging and tweeting are more akin to pamphleteering than newspaper reporting. And like pamphleteers, bloggers and tweeters are fully subject to the perils of the law of the land but not to any sector-specific regulatory code.

Bassel Khartabil, a volunteer with copyright licensing nonprofit Creative Commons, was reportedly detained by the Syrian government on March 15.

Computer engineer Bassel Khartabil has dedicated himself to making software free and open for years, and now his friends are asking for his freedom from the Syrian government's detention.

Khartabil was reportedly taken in an ambush on March 15 -- the first anniversary of the Syrian uprising -- during massive arrests. And while it's unclear why Khartabil was detained, activists say the government is known to take people randomly and without reason. It a scary time, particularly for those who are willing to gather and share information, according to activists.

The 16-month old Syrian crisis has claimed many lives with activists estimating more than 17,000 people killed.

Khartabil's friends and family are hopeful they can raise awareness through a blog launched to campaign for his freedom.

"Since his arrest, Bassel's valuable volunteer work, both in Syria and around the world, has been stopped," Khartabil's supporters wrote in the blog launched last week. "His absence has been painful for the communities that depend on him. In addition, his family, and his fiancee whom he was due to marry this past April, have had their lives put on hold."

Khartabil's family and friends don't know how the detention happened and only discovered the government had taken him after other detained people reported seeing Khartabil before they were released. Khartabil's supporters are still working on a timeline of what happened and a map of where they think he is held. They've heard from other activists that it's a place called branch 291 in the Damascus area, where the government allegedly tortured detainees.

Jon Phillips -- the founder of Fabricatorz, an open-source software and hardware company Khartabil is connected to -- said Khartabil's supporters have started the campaign to bring attention to the situation. They hope they can get him out.

"The state of Syria is very complicated," Phillips told CNET. "Our goal is to free our friend."

The campaign includes a petition that has been signed by by hundreds of supporters, from dozens of countries, including Harvard professor and political activist for the free-software movement Lawrence Lessig, who posted about Bassel's campaign on his blog on July 4:

Free-software activists hope for detained engineer's freedom

Brazilian inmate Ronaldo da Silva was making an escape of a sort as he hopped on a bicycle and pedaled furiously, clocking up several miles (kilometers) before jumping off.

Silva didn't get very far, in fact not an inch. He's still inside the medium-security prison where he's serving a 5.5-year sentence for holding up a bakery.

But he did move a bit closer to freedom on his stationary bike. Silva is part of an innovative program that allows inmates to reduce their sentences in exchange for generating power to help illuminate the town of Santa Rita do Sapucai at night.

By pedaling, the inmates charge a battery that powers 10 street lamps along a riverside promenade. For every three eight-hour days they spend on the bikes, Silva and the program's other volunteers get one day shaved off their sentences.

The project in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais is one of several across Brazil meant to cut recidivism by helping restore an inmate's sense of self-worth. Prisoners elsewhere can trim their sentences by reading sentences in books or taking classes.

Officials say they've heard a few complaints the initiatives are soft on criminals, but there's been little criticism in the country's press or in other public forums.

"We used to spend all day locked up in our cells, only seeing the sun for two hours a day," said the 38-year-old Silva, whose missing front teeth speak to a life of hardship. "Now we're out in the fresh air, generating electricity for the town and at the same time we're winning our freedom."

Silva has already pedaled off 4 kilograms (9 pounds) and 20 days from his sentence.

Clad in red, prison-issue sweat pants and matching T-shirts, he and his fellow cyclists hit the bikes at around nine in the morning and ride until about 5 p.m., with breaks for lunch and an afternoon snack.
