Jacquot's Three Run Homer Leads Freedom to Victory
Posted: August 6, 2012 at 6:14 am
August 5, 2012 - Frontier League (FL) Florence Freedom Florence, KY-The The Florence Freedom(38-32) came back from a 4-2 deficit and rallied for a 5-4 win Sunday night over the Road Warriors. The Freedom hit three homeruns and remained in contention for a wild card berth in the Frontier League playoffs. With the win, and Windy City splitting their doubleheader against Rockford, the Freedom are now 2.5 games behind Windy City for the final wild card spot.
With the Freedom trailing 4-2 in the 5th and two runners on base, Freedom catcher Jim Jacquot muscled a three run homerun over the left field wall. The homerun just barely made it over the fence as Matt Wright nearly brought the ball back on a leaping effort. Jacquot's 7th homerun of the season gave the Freedom a 5-4 lead.
The trio of Jose Velazquez, Matt Kline, and Brennan Flick were terrific out of the Freedom bullpen combining for 4.1 innings of hitless baseball. Velazquez raised his record to 5-0 after reliving starter Brent Choban with two outs in the fifth. Choban took the no decision going 4.2 innings allowing 4 hits, on 2 earned runs.
The Freedom came back from an early deficit of 2-0, as David Harris led off the 1st, with a solo homerun. It was Harris's 7th homer of the year. The Freedom then tied it on another solo shot, this one coming from John Malloy in the 2nd. Malloy now has a team lead of 10 homeruns for a Freedom team that ranks second in the Frontier League in homeruns hit.
The Freedom and Road Warriors will play a doubleheader Monday evening, with both contests scheduled for 7 innings. LHP Greg Hendrix(0-1, 18.00) will start for the Road Warriors as LHP Andres Caceres(6-3, 4.48) will climb the hill for Florence. The game can be heard starting at 5:45 with Steve Jarnicki on Real Talk 1160 AM and realtalk1160.com.

Roseanne Barr seeks Peace and Freedom Party's presidential nod
Posted: August 4, 2012 at 10:15 pm
Comedian Roseanne Barr will vie to represent the Peace and Freedom Party as candidate for president at the partys nominating convention in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Dozens of delegates gathered at a South L.A. Methodist church to hear the candidates present their cases. Voting will take place Saturday afternoon, party representatives said. Activist Stephen Durham, aspiring teacher Peta Lindsay and sales consultant and activist Stewart Alexander are also vying for the nomination.
Barr, who had previously sought the Green Partys presidential nod, threw her name into the race on Thursday. Her running mate is Cindy Sheehan, who famously protested outside President George W. Bushs Texas ranch after her son, Army Spec. Casey Sheehan, was killed in Iraq. The Green Party nominated environmentalist Jill Stein for president at its national convention in July.
The Peace and Freedom Party is struggling to maintain its ballot status under Californias new top-two primary system and needs to register tens of thousands of voters to maintain its ballot status in 2014, said Cat Woods, a member of the partys statewide central committee who is supporting Barr.
The hardest thing for us to do is to actually reach the people whose interests we represent, said Woods. The great thing about Roseanne and Cindy is that when they say it people actually hear it.

Religious freedom signs spur spat in Ridgefield

Lisa Schmidt stands Wednesday evening amid the yard signs in the front yard of her Ridgefield home. Schmidts homeowners association has asked her to remove the signs from her yard that say stand up for religious freedom because the signs dont fit in with the associations rules that allow residents to post political signs during an election season.
Ridgefield resident Lisa Schmidt is passionate about her Catholic faith -- so passionate in fact that she staked signs in her yard encouraging others to "stand up for religious freedom."
And stand up is exactly what Schmidt did when she received a notice from her homeowners association asking her to remove the religious freedom signs, which had been set up alongside several yard signs expressing support for political candidates.
It all started with a neighbor's complaint about all the signs in Schmidt's yard.
The Mt. Vista Home Owners Association's handbook allows homeowners in the 430-home subdivision to place candidate signs in their yards within the 45 days leading up to an election, but the religious freedom signs did not fit the description of what's allowed, according to the association's notice that was sent to Schmidt.
Schmidt, a marketing professional, said she typically advises people that "emotion has no place in rational thinking," but said she's had trouble following her own advice in this particular situation.
"(The homeowners association is) overzealous to say the least," she said. "It's gone too far."
Getting put on notice by her homeowners
association prompted Schmidt to get a lawyer from the Liberty Council in Arlington, Va. The council is "dedicated to advancing religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and the family," according to its website. In a strongly worded letter sent to the Mt. Vista association, the Liberty Council asserts that Schmidt's signs are protected speech under a 2005 state law.

Oxfam is to receive the Freedom of Oxford where it was founded 70 years ago.
The humanitarian organisation started life as The Oxford Committee for Famine Relief in October 1942 at a meeting room at St Mary's church.
It now has more than 700 high street shops in the UK and is supported by 22,000 volunteers.
The charity's chief executive Dame Barbara Stocking will receive the scroll at a ceremony in October.
The award will be presented by The Lord Mayor of Oxford, Alan Armitage, who said: "Oxfam has made a huge difference to the lives of many millions of people across the world during 70 years.
"We in Oxford can be very proud of the organisation's strong links with our city and the unfailing support it has had from our citizens."
Dame Barbara said: "Oxford residents have played a big part in our success over the years as staff, volunteers and supporters and Oxfam shops play a special role within the community."
The Freedom of the City is an honorary status and does not confer any special rights to the recipient other than the right to attend some ceremonial civic events.
In the past it has been given to the likes of Sir Roger Bannister, Nelson Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, the City of Leiden and the City District of Bonn.

Countdown to Marketing Freedom Begins in Western Canada
Posted: July 31, 2012 at 10:24 pm
SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(Marketwire -07/31/12)- Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today marked the eve of marketing freedom for Western Canadian wheat, durum and barley growers. Minister Ritz was joined by Senator Donald Plett, local Member of Parliament Kelly Block (Saskatoon Rosetown-Biggar) and representatives from the western grain industry to mark the countdown to marketing freedom.
"In just 12 short hours, the doors to marketing freedom will, at long last, be opened," said Minister Ritz. "The Harper Government has delivered on our long-standing commitment to give western wheat and barley farmers the same freedom to make business decisions that other farmers in Canada have long enjoyed."
The countdown to marketing freedom began today at Innovation Place in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The location highlighted the potential for greater investment, innovation and competition for the western grain industry in an open market.
The Harper Government's top priority is the economy, and the agriculture industry plays an important role in creating jobs and keeping the economy strong. Canada is the world's fifth-largest exporter of agriculture and food products, with last year's exports hitting an all-time high of more than $40 billion.
"It's an exciting time as we look forward to the historic day tomorrow when wheat and barley farmers across Western Canada will have the full freedom to run their own businesses," said Senator Plett. "Marketing freedom will allow our hardworking farmers to achieve greater success by dealing directly in the marketplace."
Additional information on marketing freedom can be found at http://www.agr.gc.ca/freedom.

China Criticizes US Report on Religious Freedom
Posted: at 10:17 am
China said Tuesday that a U.S. report describing repression of religion in China and elsewhere is a political tool based on groundless accusations that displays Washington's arrogance and ignorance.
The annual State Department report released Monday highlighted what it said was a lack of religious freedom in China as well as Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran and North Korea.
It said there had been "a marked deterioration during 2011 in the government's respect for and protection of religious freedom" in China, and that there was "severe" repression of religious freedom in Tibetan areas and the far western region of Xinjiang, home to a significant number of Muslims.
Tibetan areas of China have seen a surge in self-immolations since 2011, and the report said that tightened restrictions on Buddhist worship contributed to at least 12 of them last year.
The Chinese response came in a commentary published by the official Xinhua News Agency, which said the report was "continuing a notorious practice of blatantly interfering in the internal affairs of other countries."
"The annual report, largely based on unconfirmed media reports and groundless allegations from outlawed groups and organizations with ulterior motives, is nothing but a political tool used by the U.S. government to exert pressure on other countries, mostly deemed as its rivals," it said.
Xinhua said the U.S. was imposing its own standard on religious policies regardless of historic or cultural differences, saying the report was "full of prejudice, arrogance and ignorance."
It said religious freedoms were protected under China's constitution, saying only a few from banned "cults" and illegal "extremist religious organizations" aimed at splitting apart the country were punished.
Xinhua said the self-immolations were politically motivated, and part of a "scheme" by supporters of the exiled Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, whom China accuses of trying to separate Tibet from China.
The State Department said the Chinese government harassed, arrested or sentenced to prison a number of people for activities reported to be related to their religious practice.

Finding freedom in the Lebanese mountain
Posted: July 30, 2012 at 6:11 am
BEITEDDINE: In the Ottoman-era palace of this Chouf village, a locked, windowless room contains a treasure trove of artefact and story rolled into one. The trove is comprised of the works in Days of Freedom, an exhibition of recent work by Samir Sayegh, arguably Lebanons best-known calligrapher.
Though it is kept under lock and key, this is one exhibition that is worth expending a little effort to see and a courteous caretaker makes access easy enough to obtain.
Absent from this show are Sayeghs immediately recognizable geometric designs, with their rich colors and delicately applied gold leaf. In their place is a series of sketchy, frenetic paintings, which reveal both the extent of Sayeghs creativity and precision.
Curated by Agial Gallery founder Saleh Barakat, Days of Freedom is described as a diary, a tribute to the events of the Arab Spring in the form of a series of renditions of the word freedom (hurriya), executed in a bewildering variety of colors, shapes, sizes and styles.
Like the uprisings which sparked in a half dozen or so countries in the Middle East and North Africa last year these pieces exude a spontaneous, almost experimental quality, as if Sayegh were asking Can I really do this? And what will happen if I try?
To create the deceptively simple, often unfinished-looking, renderings of the single word, the artist uses a brush an unusual tool in Arabic calligraphy, which traditional lore has it is formed with a dried reed or bamboo dipping pen.
The thin, sketchy look of the ink in many of the lines betrays the speed with which Sayegh creates his forms astounding when you consider the infallible straightness of his lines, his unerring repetition of the same curve, time after time.
Sayeghs precision may be born of many years of hard work, but this does not diminish its impact. His work is a unique blend of control and freedom, premeditation and spontaneity.
In contrast with the dimly lit stone room, with its antique vaulted ceilings, the swirling letters seem almost ephemeral a series of fleeting moments and emotions captured like a pinioned butterfly on paper.
Each ink-on-paper work is unframed, instead sandwiched between two sheets of Plexiglas, giving the exhibition a scrapbook-like aspect. The works range from large sheets of paper covered with tiny sketches simple studies in preparation for larger paintings to colorful series of overlapping words, so layered in some cases that they become chaotic and nearly illegible. Only a handful of the works appear to be finished pieces, thicker, more deliberate-looking lines contrasted with a sketchier background.
