PSY #39;Gangnam Style #39; s first public speech in English at Oxford University
The speech is Psy #39;s first public address in English, and he has picked the perfect venue - an organisation that Harold Macmillan once called #39;the last bastion of free speech in the Western world #39;. Gangnam Style rapper Psy was mobbed by screaming fans as he arrived in London today before heading to Oxford Union to give a speech. The 34-year-old South Korean, whose music video is the second most watched YouTube clip in history, is the first east Asian pop star addresses the historic organisation.From:lilanabellaViews:3 2ratingsTime:00:37More inEntertainment

Summerville sign: Free speech or offensive language?

Posted: at 12:43 am

Summerville, SC --

A political sign in Summerville is causing some controversy. Some people find it offensive others say it's merely an opinion.

I pray the west coast and the northeast fall into the ocean.

Is posted on a sign along Highway 176 in Summerville and judging by whats on the other side of the sign, it probably has something to with a certain group of voters.

Those who are offended or a little amused stopped to take a picture with their smart phone to send friends or to post on their favorite social networking site. It is a message suited for such activity but the sign owner went old school, posting his take in the election along a busy stretch of road.

"Did you vote for Obama? Thanks a lot a**holes! I'm Wayne Hall and I approved this message."

News 2 caught up to Wayne Hall at his home in Goose Creek. Hall says he is a political independent; his business Azalea Landscaping closed months ago, but whats with the sign?

Well it's a free country and I have a right to my view just like anybody else does. Those words, hell you could hear those words on Nickelodeon, ABC Family, any channel.

Hall says he changes the messages on the sign often and because of the nature of the messages the sign has been vandalized, but he continues on. He pushed the envelope a little more this time with the profanity making the sign, for those we talked to, a serious concern or a minor nuisance.

You got kids; you got a high school all the way down to an elementary school right down the street.

Chick-fil-A on campus is not a free speech issue

Posted: at 12:43 am

The issue of whether we should keep Chick-fil-A on campus is multi-faceted, but it isnt complex. Some folks in our community seem to think its a question of free speech. It isnt.

First, and very simply, it isnt a question of free speech legally. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, protecting a freedom of speech, does not apply to private actors. Wake Forest is a private university. Consequently, the freedom of speech enjoyed by our students is due to our commitment to an ethic of free expression, academic freedom and collaborative education.

It is not a legal mandate. Likewise, a legally-relevant question of freedom of speech for Chick-fil-A would arise only if the government prohibited Chick-fil-A from engaging in anti-gay speech or punished it for doing so.

Merely asking it as a commercial enterprise to comply with a generally applicable, neutral nondiscrimination policy, as Chicago and other jurisdictions have, does not prohibit its CEO from saying whatever he wants.

A more difficult question, at least on the surface, is whether ejecting Chick-fil-A from our campus collides with some abstract commitment to free speech.

Again, the answer is no. If we take a principled stand and refuse to support Chick-fil-As anti-gay efforts in this country and elsewhere, Chick-fil-A is not, in any way, forbidden to speak. The real question is whether Wake Forest, ostensibly committed to nondiscrimination on account of sexual orientation, should subsidize Chick-fil-As anti-gay speech.

Chick-fil-A sends millions of dollars in contributions to anti-gay organizations in this country and abroad.

Most disturbing to me is the organizations support of Ugandas Kill the Gays bill, a piece of legislation purportedly aligned with Christian values that imposes the death penalty for anyone who is homosexual or living with HIV.

Now, if Wake Forest elects to eject Chick-fil-A from campus, as many other universities have, because this kind of ugliness conflicts directly with Wake Forests commitment to nondiscrimination, and to its professed commitment to the well-being of minority students of whatever stripe, this does not prevent Chick-fil-A from speaking.

How The 'Do Not Track' Plan Will Ultimately Kill Free Speech

Posted: at 12:43 am

Online advertising gets a bad rap.

Consumers, bombarded for years with belly fat and acai berry ads, dont welcome most display, video, and search ads.

Fortunately, many digital ads have evolved. Theyve become more relevant and less invasive, and consumers have become more open to them.

But what if ads disappeared? The alternative to an ad-supported Internet is a pay-for-play world supported by subscriptions or private ownership. Consumers may think they want an ad-free Internet, but do we really want to pay subscription fees to access all the sites we currently visit for free? In the end, advertising is the only thing that will keep the web free.

The web is a free resource we take for granted. Since the early 1990s, when it was first introduced, the web has grown at rates no expert could have predicted. And advertising has paid for most of that growth.

Imagine if access to web content had been set up differently, with a subscription model. A subscription model would limit Internet access to those who could afford it. And content creation would be driven by those few companies able to find enough subscribers to sustain their writers, editors, and techs. It would be a much smaller web.

Thankfully, most web content remains free. But it costs money to create that content. Professional writers, editors, photographers, designers, engineers, and on and onall spend a great deal of time and effort to create the content we enjoy for free. And where does the money come from to pay for their work? From advertising.

Social networks like Twitter and Facebook, and user-generated content (UGC) sites like YouTube, also rely on advertising revenues to pay for the back-end hosting and technology that enables consumers to post their comments, videos, and content for free.

Everyone claims to hate online advertising, but everyone also uses it. We dont engage with all of the advertising were exposed to. But when the ad is interesting, relevant, or just a deal we cant ignore, we do indeed pay attention.

More importantly, with all the heated debate about Do Not Track and other privacy initiatives aimed at the online advertising industry, one issue rarely comes up: the impact these controls would have on free speech.
