Experts warn against overuse of vitamin D – Anadolu Agency

ISTANBUL
Overuse of vitamins and food supplements to keep the immune system strong during the pandemic may have negative consequences, a Turkish expert warned on Monday.
Releasing a written statement on the overuse of vitamins, particularly vitamin D, in attempts to make immune systems robust, Betul Mercan, an internal diseases expert from Medipol Mega University Hospital in Istanbul, said hypervitaminosis D, occurring as a result of excessive and unnecessary use of vitamin D, may result in various health issues.
"Most people who eat regularly do not need additional supplements but it has become common for patients to unconsciously use high doses of various vitamins, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vitamin D is one of them, and unfortunately, we frequently encounter high doses of uncontrolled vitamin D use," she said.
People should be aware of social media content that unconsciously urge people to use vitamins, Mercan stressed, saying that such uncontrolled drug use brings along unhealthy results.
A condition called hypervitaminosis D may occur due to long-term vitamin D intake or at high doses, she noted.
Hypervitaminosis D brings increased calcium excretion (hypercalciuria), high blood calcium level (hypercalcemia), and heart rhythm disorder, Mercan said, adding: "So the use of vitamin D should be under the supervision of a doctor."

Diet influences numerous aspects of health, including weight, athletic performance, and risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. According to some research, it may affect mental health, too.
Anxiety and depression are among the most common mental health conditions worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression could be one of the top health concerns in the world by 2030.
Therefore, it is not surprising that researchers continue to search for new ways to reduce the impact of mental health conditions, rather than relying on current therapies and medications.
Nutritional psychiatry is an emerging area of research specifically looking at the role of nutrition in the development and treatment of mental health problems.
The two main questions that researchers are asking in relation to the role of nutrition in mental health are, Does diet help prevent mental health conditions? and, Are nutrition interventions helpful in the treatment of these conditions?

Several observational studies have shown a link between overall diet quality and the risk of depression.

Researchers often rely on participants recalling what they have eaten in previous days, weeks, or months, but no ones memory is perfect.
The research into whether dietary interventions can help treat mental health problems is relatively new and still quite limited.
The SMILES trial was one of the first randomized controlled trials to examine the role of diet in the treatment of depression.
Over 12 weeks, 67 individuals with moderate or severe depression received either dietary counseling or social support in addition to their current treatment.
The dietary intervention was similar to a Mediterranean diet, in that it emphasized vegetables, fruits, whole grains, oily fish, extra virgin olive oil, legumes, and raw nuts. It also allowed for moderate amounts of red meat and dairy.
At the end of the study, those in the diet group had significantly greater improvements in depression symptoms. These improvements remained significant even when the scientists accounted for confounding variables, including body mass index (BMI), physical activity, and smoking.
Furthermore, only 8% of individuals in the control group achieved remission, compared with 32% of those in the diet group.
Although these results seem promising, the SMILES study was a small, short-term study. As a result, larger, longer term studies are necessary to apply its findings to a larger population.
Replicating the findings is important because not all research agrees with them. For instance, in a study that recruited 1,025 adults with overweight or obesity and at least mild depressive symptoms, researchers investigated the impact of both a multinutrient supplement and food-related behavioral activation on mental health outcomes.
The scientists found no significant difference in depressive episodes compared with a placebo after 12 months.
In the same year, though, a meta-analysis of 16 randomized controlled studies did find that dietary interventions significantly reduced symptoms of depression, but not those of anxiety.
It is, therefore, difficult to draw solid conclusions from the existing body of research, particularly as the type of dietary intervention under investigation has varied greatly among studies.
Overall, more research is needed on the topic of specific dietary patterns and the treatment of mental health conditions. In particular, there is a need for a more standardized definition of a healthful diet, as well as for larger, long-term studies.
In addition to dietary patterns, scientists are interested in the potential effects that individual nutrients in the form of dietary supplements might have on mental health.
Scientists have found links between low levels of certain nutrients such as folate, magnesium, iron, zinc, and vitamins B6, B12, and D and worsening mood, feelings of anxiety, and risk of depression.
However, there is inconclusive evidence on whether consuming extra amounts of these nutrients in supplement form offers further benefits for mental health.
For instance, if someone is deficient in magnesium, for example, taking a magnesium supplement might help improve symptoms. However, if someone is getting adequate amounts of magnesium in their diet, it is unclear whether taking a supplement will provide any benefits.
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats that play a key role in brain development and cell signaling. An article in Frontiers in Physiology discusses how they reduce levels of inflammation.
Due to their anti-inflammatory effects and importance in brain health, scientists have investigated omega-3s for their potential effects on mental health.
While more research is still needed, in 2018 and 2019, reviews of randomized controlled trials found omega-3 supplements to be effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression in adults.
However, as with vitamin and mineral supplements, it remains unclear whether omega-3 supplementation can help improve mood in most individuals or whether it is primarily effective in those with the lowest intake of omega-3s.
Overall, when it comes to taking supplements for mental health, there is still a lot we do not know, including what the optimal doses are for various populations and the long-term safety and effectiveness.
Therefore, experts recommend acquiring the majority of these nutrients through a healthful and varied diet. Anyone who is concerned that they are unable to meet their nutrient needs through diet alone should speak with a doctor to discuss whether supplements may be helpful.
While there is a need for further research, observational studies suggest, overall, that there is a link between what people eat and their mental health. Why nutrition may have this effect is still unknown, though.

Finally, there is the possibility that diet plays a more indirect role in mental health.
It may be that individuals with healthful diets are more likely to engage in behaviors that are also linked with a reduced risk of mental health conditions, such as engaging in regular physical activity, practicing good sleep habits, and refraining from smoking.
It is important to keep in mind that many factors can influence both eating habits and mental health.
According to MentalHealth.gov, factors that can contribute to mental health conditions include biological factors, such as genetics, life experiences, and family history. Socioeconomic status can also affect mental health, as can access to food and overall diet quality.

In this issue, weve been focused on kindness to others, kindness to our environment and more. But what about self-kindness? What does being kind to your body look like?
It means having health practices that give us a sense of well-being, says Judie Boothe, a certified clinical nutritionist (C.C.N.) and owner of Fountain of Health, a legendary retailer in Amarillos health community. Boothe says a proper balance of nutrition, supplements and beneficial health practices can improve almost every aspect of a persons life.
She should know. Five decades ago, before opening her shop, Boothe endured 4 years of illness. It started with a staph infection after the birth of her daughter, followed by bouts with rheumatic fever, hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, low blood sugar, lupus and early kidney failure. I spent two years in bed and had no hope of getting well, she says.
That was 54 years ago. Today, Boothe is a healthy and vibrant 79 and still maintains a constant presence at her store on Western in the Shops at 34th. God had plans for me, so here I am today and I can outwork people half my age, she says. In fact, shes just a few months away from turning 80. People are shocked when I tell them that.
Judie is even a little shocked herself. But her good health is a testament to taking care of her body. During her health crisis, improving her diet and experimenting with supplements restored her to better health, and led to Judie and her husband, Ron, becoming owners of Fountain of Health 45 years ago. Since then, she has studied with master herbalists and naturopathic doctors, gained her nutritionist certification, and maintained ongoing education efforts to stay current with new research and products.
Naturally, we wanted to hear from Boothe regarding her advice about living the healthiest life possible. She provided a succinct overview: It includes healthy eating and drinking plenty of pure water, getting quality dietary supplements, getting seven to eight hours of quality sleep a night, and getting appropriate exercise. Its also paying attention to our spiritual health and having a positive mental outlook, giving thanks each day for blessings, even small ones.
Boothe then broke things down a little further.
Her advice is to eat nutritious food that is as close to that foods natural state as possible. In other words, avoid fast food, convenience foods, and heavily processed foods. Instead, pursue a balanced diet of leafy greens, colorful vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds and quality protein. But try to become as educated as possible about those foods, she says.
People think if they eat a salad or a meat every day they are healthy, says Boothe. But that doesnt mean a standard side salad is particularly nutritious. Boothe warns that traditional iceberg lettuce doesnt provide much nutritional punch. Instead, she recommends other greens, like broccoli, asparagus, kale, spinach, and celery. Its a high-antioxidant food, she says of the always underrated celery. We look at it and think its not that great, but its a very good food.
She also loves cabbage, green and yellow squashes, and purple onions. People will always say, If I shouldnt eat this [sugary or processed] food, what am I going to eat? They just have not looked at all these wonderful, beautiful, colorful foods!
Boothe always recommends organic or frozen organic foods when possible.
Fountain of Health sells a vast variety of nutrition products and supplements. With the world we live in today, we really need quality dietary supplements, explains Boothe. The only exception is for those who maintain a diet extremely well-balanced with natural, organic foods. Even then, she believes that may not be enough. I dont think we can get the nutrition we need out of our foods.
For everyone, male and female, Boothe recommends a basic daily multivitamin, as long as its a high-quality supplement. Most multivitamins, however, dont contain enough vitamin E or vitamin C, so she recommends additional supplements of those nutrients, along with extra minerals and a good probiotic.
Boothe and her staff are always willing to help customers choose the best-quality vitamins and supplements from the shelves at her store. We work with individuals to assess their particular nutritional needs, she says. Boothe is board certified in clinical nutrition and accustomed to reading medical lab tests and health histories to help determine other supplements to add to a customers diet even going so far as to analyze a persons nutrition intake and sleep patterns.
There are quite a few questions well ask. Our health [condition] can show up in [the appearance of] our fingernails, hair and skin, she says. So there are a lot of things we look at to help guide a person so that they feel a sense of well-being and feel healthier and enjoy life.
Since Boothes expertise is based only in nutrition, she does advise customers to speak with their doctors about finding the right balance between supplements and medication to achieve positive health results.
Boothe also recommends that people stay hydrated throughout the day, drinking at least a half-ounce of water per pound of body weight each day.
The right amount of exercise is also critical. Most people tend to assume they arent exercising enough, but Boothe has also encountered some individuals who exercise too much. In pursuit of good health, they put too much stress on their bodies and end up causing injury or decreasing their overall wellness. You need to try to hit a happy medium, she says.
Sleep is also vital to well-being, and Boothe regularly finds herself advising customers who are desperate for healthy, natural sleep aids. Sometimes they just need to develop better habits for good, quality sleep or [they need] a supplement that will help them relax. Relaxation before sleep is important, because our overly stimulated minds are often the culprits when sleep is poor. Sometimes our minds are just going, going, going.
More than anything else, Boothe advises customers to prioritize their health a concept thats been at the forefront of our minds during the pandemic. She points out that its a challenge to enjoy anything else about life when you dont feel good. To me, a strong, healthy, vibrant body is essential, says Boothe. Its the most important thing. Its more important than having money. If you dont have good health, you dont even enjoy having wealth.
Judie Boothe made that discovery when she first got sick more than half a century ago. The fact that shes still around to teach customers gives credence to her advice. Shes not just advocating for good health. Shes proof that it matters.

Between 2015 and 2020, the market for memory and cognitive health-positioned supplements saw a compound annual growth rate of 7% globally, according to insight from Euromonitor International, but with a global pandemic at play, is mental health still top of mind?
While COVID-19 may have shuffled prioritiesbringing significant boosts to some categories and creating a downturn in othersEuromonitor expects growth of products for memory and cognitive health to be sustained at around 5% for 2020, despite the challenges and altered priorities brought about by the global heath crisis that is COVID-19.
While commonplace health conditions like bone, heart, joint or even digestive health show drastically different levels of concern by age group (with consumers aged 60+ overwhelmingly more concerned about these conditions than their children or grandchildren), cognitive health is the rare concern that cuts across cohorts, worrying consumers of all ages, says Matthew Oster Head of Consumer Health at Euromonitor International.
Unlike other health demands, the request for cognitive health has not abated in the time of COVID-19; rather, the market for these products has seen strong growth in 2020 consistent with growth seen prior to the pandemic, he added.
According toEuromonitors 2020 Health and Nutrition Surveyconducted just before COVID-19 hit last yearcognition, sleep, and mental and emotional wellbeing are top of mind for consumers of all generations.
More than half of global consumers surveyed by Euromonitor claimed they are currently suffering from moderate, high, or extreme stress levels.
Innovations within the global vitamins and dietary supplements marketplace are catering to this demand, with nootropic ingredients rising in recognition and popularity, says Oster.
In this space, herbal/traditional ingredients have retained popularity; products like ginkgo biloba are seeing steady interest from consumers across ages. Other traditional remedies, such as ayurvedic herbs like brahmi (or bacopa monnieri), are making inroads into wellness communities as promising ingredients for memory retention and focus for older consumers, he suggested. Other herbal solutions like spearmint and Traditional Chinese Medicine solutions like mushrooms hold promise to increase focus and limit age-related cognitive decline.
Oster says such ingredients are filtering down into the food and beverages marketplace, as cognition and memory-oriented products become mainstream.
Drinks have become an apt format for cognitive health given that many common ingredients in this space have nootropic properties, above all caffeine, he adds. Though not typically thought of as a cognitive health product, caffeine has been shown to boost alertness and improve performance on cognitive tasks, which allowed the ingredient to become a good entry point to nootropics.
In addition to coffee, teas are also becoming central to the development of the category as a natural format for cognitive healthfor example teas blended with l-theanine or ginkgo biloba to boost concentration for short periods.
According to Euromonitor, energy drinks are also shifting positioning away from pure energy boosts toward benefits like focus and concentration as they begin to incorporate a variety of natural nootropics. This positioning shift has allowed energy drinks to market to consumer groups that need sustained focus plus energy, such as students and esports enthusiasts, says Oster.
Finally, packaged foods are starting to get into the space as well, recognizing the connection between focus and snacking, Oster continued, noting that before the pandemic there had been significant promise for on-the-go nootropic-positioned snacks like energy bars.
While the pandemic altered the consumption occasions for these products, interest will likely return in due course, he said. Fortified bars remain a quick and easy format to stimulate energy and focus for consumers needing a short-term boost of mental clarity.
