The Worst Vitamin D Supplement To Take, Say Dietitians | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: October 9, 2021 at 7:29 am

Did you know there are several forms of vitamin D available in food and supplements? This is actually true for several different vitamins, and it's important to keep in mind when incorporating and vitamin supplements into your daily routine.

Not all forms of vitamin D are created equal, and, in fact, there is one form that stands above the rest. And because there's one type of vitamin D that's considered to be the best, that also means there's a vitamin D supplement that dietitians consider to be less effective, or in other words, the "worst": vitamin D2.

Here is what you need to know about the different forms of vitamin D before you head to the store to pick out your supplements.

RELATED:Surprising Side Effects of Taking Vitamin D Supplements, Says Science

Vitamin D is unique because it is a vitamin that we can create in our body as long as our skin is exposed to UV-B rays from the sun. Despite this, many adults are deficient in vitamin D and rely on supplements to supply their body adequate amounts.

There are two main forms of vitamin D: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol).

D3 is the form that is created in your body and is also naturally found in animal-based foods, like fish, eggs, and animal liver, while D2 is found naturally in plant-based foods, like mushrooms. Both forms can be consumed through supplements; however, the D2 form is more frequently used in fortified foods, like cereal and dairy products, and supplements because it is less expensive to produce.

While both forms of vitamin D contribute to the "pool" of vitamin D available in your body, D2 is considered to be less effective than D3. Because of this, vitamin D2 is a less desirable form of vitamin D and should not be your first choice for a supplement.

Of course, when incorporating a supplement into their daily routine in an effort to improve vitamin D status, many people are interested in the best bang for their buck. And as mentioned earlier, vitamin D2 is less expensive to produce than vitamin D3, so you may be drawn to buying it due to its lower price tag. However, in order to get the most out of your vitamin D supplement, skip D2 and head straight for D3.

In addition to being less effective at raising levels of blood vitamin D content, vitamin D2 supplements may also be of lower quality than their D3 counterparts. Research has found that D2 is more likely to degrade over time if exposed to varying temperatures and humidity, likely yielding an even less effective supplement.

Luckily, when choosing a vitamin D supplement, most labels will include the form of vitamin D that has been used within the product, either D2 or D3, so you are well informed and can choose products accordingly.

While all forms of vitamin D supplements can help improve your vitamin D status to some extent, it is in your best interest to choose D3 for maximum effectiveness.

In addition to consuming a supplement, you should also increase your intake of D2 and D3 rich foods, and aim to spend time outdoors each day to aid in improving your vitamin D status.

The Verdict on Getting Enough Vitamin D Through Food | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: at 7:29 am

Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient for healthy bones, muscles, and teeth, especially because it helps your body absorb calcium. The problem is that many of us don't get enough of it. In fact, some estimates say 41.6% of the American population gets insufficient levels of vitamin D.

This widespread vitamin D deficiency exists because the primary source of vitamin D is what our bodies produce when our skin is exposed to sunlight. In fact, vitamin D is the only nutrient your body produces that is activated by the sun, according to Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook and member of our expert medical board.

With many of us sitting all day, we don't get out in the sun much. (Read more: What Happens To Your Body When You Sit All Day.)

"Since a lot of us don't get enough sunshine on a regular basis, a large portion of the population is deficient in vitamin D," says Goodson. "The goal is to spend 15-20 minutes in the sun, with a good amount of your skin exposed, during the strongest sun hours of the day (typically 11 am to 2 pm)," she adds.

Because the reality is that most of us don't get as much vitamin D from the sun as we needwhich is 20 micrograms (mcg) or 800 international units (IU)Goodson says it is recommended that we get about 20 mcg of vitamin D per day from our food.

If you know it's harder for you to get out in the sun enough to produce sufficient levels of vitamin D, you may be wondering, "can you get enough D vitamins through the food we eat alone?"

According to Goodson, it is possible to get enough vitamin D through food, but it becomes really difficult for those who are plant-based or for those who don't eat fish.

Vitamin D is readily available to us through sunlight, but it's a little bit harder to obtain from food, especially if you don't eat fish or animal products very often.

This is because the best food sources of vitamin D are fatty fish (salmon, herring, sardines, tuna), cow's milk, beef liver, and some cheeses.

"Salmon has some of the highest vitamin D amounts, with 526 IU, or 66% of your daily value, per 3.5-ounce piece (about 100 grams)," says Goodson.

She also notes that wild salmon typically has a higher vitamin D amount than farmed salmon, although you can get it from both.

If you don't eat fish or other animal products, it is still possible to get vitamin D from mushrooms, although you'll only get about 4 IU per 1/2 cup or about 1% of your daily value.

"Another note about mushrooms is that they provide vitamin D2 but not D3," says Goodson, "and while it is still good for you, vitamin D2 may not always raise vitamin D levels like vitamin D3 does."

People may choose to get their vitamin D from supplements if they don't eat fish or don't spend enough time in the sun.

In an average vitamin D supplement, there are usually around 2,000 IU (500 mcg) of D3. Although the recommended daily amount is at least 800 IU, the National Institute of Health says that taking more than 4,000 IU can become harmful.

So, if you are going to supplement your vitamin D, it's best to consult your doctor and make sure to monitor how much you are taking.

‘The era of CBD prohibition in the Golden State is over’ CA governor signs hemp bill AB 45 into law – FoodNavigator-USA.com

Posted: at 7:29 am

The legislation resolves an impasse that began in 2018 when California aligned itself with the FDAs position that CBD is not a legal dietary ingredient as it was first investigated as a drug.

You can read the text HERE, however, the devil will be in the detail, noted the US Hemp Roundtablein a summaryof the legislation.

There are a number of issues left open by the statute that may be resolved through the standard regulatory process, with a comprehensive opportunity for public notice and comment. Further, once the FDA acts to regulate hemp-derived CBD products, the state agency is then required to adopt new regulations to comply with the federal standards.

According to AB 45:

So how have CPG brands responded to the news?

Jonathan Eppers, founder and CEO ofVYBES, which sells CBD-infusedbeveragesand elixirs, said AB 45 represented a significant step forward for CBD brands given the size of the addressable market in California:For the past three years, health inspectors across the state have targeted our CBD beverages and made retailers remove them from their shelves. Many retailers in California who wanted to carry VYBES decided not to, out of fear they'd get in trouble.

We expect a lot of these retailers, some who have already reached out to us since Newsom signed AB 45 into law yesterday, to finally stock VYBES now that it's clear CBD is legal in California.

The old saying is How California goes, so goes the nation and while many states across the US already have CBD laws in place, I think it sends a clear message that CBD is here, it's not going anywhere, and consumers finally have access to safe and effective CBD products. It's a very exciting time to be in this business.

Justin Singer, founder and CEO at Caliper Foods, also welcomed the news, although having a patchwork of state laws is far from ideal, he said.

"On the one hand,California has done what FDA should have done three years ago: it's admitted that CBD products are in wide distribution and, and it's recognized that products in wide distribution require clear regulation and enforcement to protect consumers from fraud or physical harm."

On the other hand, he said,"Righteous though AB 45 may be, the only way to solve the CBD problem is for FDA to act like the consumer protection agency most Americans, wrongly, assume it is. Remember, most of the vendors needed to successfully bring products to market operate nationally. Banks, payment processors, investors, insurers, brokers, distributors, retailers, advertisers -- they're looking for federal certainty, not state certainty."

Eric Schnell, co-founder at hemp-infused beverage brandmood33 said passage of AB 45 was "a major milestone for our industry and especially the smaller brands like ours that need this in order to expand distribution into larger mainstream retailers.

He added: "There is a lot of product in market that is not properly tested, and having regulations in place helps ensure consumers are getting what they pay for. With some of these large states putting in local regulations, we hope it inspires the FDA to look at this on a national basis to establish rules and regulations around CBD."

Jonathan Miller, general counsel for the industry-backedUS Hemp Roundtable (which counts among its members beverage brands such as Recess and VYBES and supplement brands including Charlottes Web and CV Sciences) told us: "We are thrilled that AB 45 is now official California law the era of CBD prohibition in the Golden State is over.

The past three and a half years have been difficult for California hemp farmers and businesses given state agency guidance arguing that CBD products are illegal. Now not only has this barrier been removed, but strong consumer protections will be put in place through regulation."

But he added:There still is much work to be done to ensure these regulations are appropriate and fair, and we look forward to working with the Newsom Administration to make Californias program a model for the nation.

Greg Kaufman, partner at law firm Eversheds Sutherland, added:"Overall, AB 45 is a victory for hemp-derived cannabinoid product manufacturers and consumers in California looking for consistent and safe ingestible products. Because of the size of the California market, standards set there are likely to be informally adopted by the hemp-derived products industry outside of the state."

That said, those currently"taking advantage of the regulatory uncertainty"surrounding Delta-8 THC* will not like its inclusion in the definition of THC or comparable cannabinoid, he said.

"The two biggest questions left to be answered are determinations on serving sizes and the extent to which future federal regulation of cannabinoids in foods and as dietary supplements clashes with Californias regulations,"said Kaufman, who predicted that"FDA will eventually regulate CBD, and potentially other cannabinoids, as a dietary supplement; however, there is no guarantee that it will go as far as California has with AB 45.

"This sets up a potential clash between federal and state regulations where interstate commerce is implicated. It may also lead to continued class action cases being brought under the theory that consumers were buying products without knowing that the products they were buying were illegal under federal law."

While individual state laws explicitly authorizing the sale of ingestible CBD are better than nothing, many food and beverage brands say that on a federal level, they remain stuckin legal limbo.

Right now, for example, most major retailers will not carry CBD-infused food & beverages until the FDA lays out a regulatory framework for these products. The FDA, meanwhile, says CBD not a legal dietary ingredient because it was first investigated as a drug, but has not engaged in widespread enforcement action beyond sendingout warning letters to firms making egregious health claims.

Aside from the challenges this uncertainty brings for CBD brands dealing with banks, payment processors, insurers and so on, there are also IP implications, with the US Patent and Trademark Office'sTrademark Trial and Appeal Board recently affirming thatuntil federal law changes and regardless of whether the law isanticipated to change ingestible CBD products are unlawful, and cannot therefore be covered by a trademark.

Hopes that the FDA might entertainnew dietary ingredient (NDI) notifications for ingestible CBD ingredients, meanwhile, were recently dashed after the agency rejected NDI applications from two high-profile players in the supplements arena - Charlotte's Web and Irwin Naturals - arguing that the CBD in their hemp extracts is not a legal dietary ingredient as CBD was first investigated as a drug.

In letters to the applicants, the FDA also noted that both NDINs failed to demonstrate the extracts met the "reasonably expected to be safe under the conditions of use" standards set out under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) and failed to provide adequate data regarding hepatotoxicity and reproductive toxicity.

All eyes therefore, are now on Congress, said Miller at the US Hemp Roundtable:We are very hopeful that legislation will pass in U.S. Congress to lift regulatory uncertainty on a national level we expect a hearing soon in the House Energy & Commerce Committee to discussHR 841[the Hemp and Hemp-Derived CBD Consumer Protection and Market Stabilization Act of 2021],which would have CBD regulated as a dietary supplement.

"But until then, we have to count on states like California to take the lead.

* While delta-8 THC does not have the same intoxicating power as its better-known sibling delta-9 THC, it still has some, claims the US Hemp Roundtable, which says that any intoxicating constituents of the plant, including delta-8 THC,should be restricted to medical and recreation cannabis channels.

Best supplements for PMS: How to handle food cravings, cramps, mood swings and anxiety – Daily Express

Posted: at 7:29 am

The National Association for Premenstrual Syndromes (NAPS) said there is "compelling evidence" that PMS symptoms are related to the fluctuation of hormone levels during a monthly cycle. In the lead up to menstruation, mood swings, lethargy, irritability and feelings of aggression can take over. Furthermore, breasts can become tender, you may become bloated, and headaches can attack.

There are reportedly up to 150 symptoms that have been associated with PMS.

Each symptom can vary in severity during a cycle, and symptoms can differ from cycle to cycle.

The duration of PMS symptoms can extend from ovulation to menstruation, for seven days beforehand, or for four days around ovulation, for the condition to remerge prior to menstruation.

Clearly, for many women, the experience can be overwhelming and tiring.

"If you have symptoms like bloating, fluid retention, and tenderness in your breasts, you might benefit from taking about 360mg of magnesium a day," said WebMD.

Chasteberry supplementation has also been shown to help reduce physical symptoms such as breast tenderness.

Reportedly, chasteberry can also help reduce fluid retention, depressed mood, and irritability.

A study revealed that taking 20mg of chasteberry extract daily over several cycles led to an improvement of symptoms.

NAPS recommend "lifestyle changes" to help reduce PMS symptoms.

This includes reducing stress levels, a healthy diet, exercising, limiting alcohol, and not smoking.

However, "they will be insufficient in managing moderate to severe PMS".

NAPS concurred that magnesium can be a complimentary therapy, which can be found in nuts.

Nuts rich in magnesium:

Medical treatment for moderate to severe PMS includes ovulation suppression and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

To suppress ovulation, medical professionals may recommend the combined contraceptive pill, oestrogen patches, or the implant.

"If severe PMS persists then a hysterectomy is the ultimate medical treatment," NAPS added.

If you've been trying to lower your blood pressure without success, adding a little fish oil to your regular routine may help.

"Fish oil can reduce blood pressure because of the omega-3 fatty acids. Research has shown that diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure decreases for those who take omega-3 fatty acids," says Courtney D'Angelo, MS, RD, author at Fit Healthy Momma, citing a 2014 study published in the American Journal of Hypertension.

Lowering your blood pressure isn't the only cardioprotective effect you can enjoy when you take fish oil supplements.

"Fish oil can also reduce triglycerides," says D'Angelo, citing research published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta in 2012. "These fats are important sources of energy, but too much can hurt your heart health. Long chain omega-3 fatty acids are another big reason why triglycerides can be reduced." If you want to keep your mind sharp as you age, taking some fish oil supplements might just be the easiest place to start.

"After the age of fifty, starting a fish oil supplement may help improve mood and energy and potentially prevent the risk of some cognitive disorders," says Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD, a registered dietitian at Balance One Supplements. "This is because roughly 60% of the brain is made of fat, and half that amount is omega-3 type fats. It has been found that fish oil can help prevent cognitive diseases like Alzheimer's and slow mental decline."

Want to stay fit and active as you age? Fish oil supplements might be the key to keeping your body healthy and strong.

"In one study, women over the age of 50 who took 2,000 milligrams of fish oil daily and did resistance exercise for 90 days improved their muscle strength as compared to women who exercised only," explains Elizabeth Ward, MS, RDN, co-author, The Menopause Diet Plan, A Natural Guide to Hormones, Health, and Happiness, citing a 2012 study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

While depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues can happen to anyone at any age, adults over 50 may want to add some fish oil to their diet if they want to improve their mood.

"Fish oil has been shown to relieve symptoms of depression in just 21 days. This may be partially due to the anti-inflammatory effects of fish oil," says Rachel Dyckman, MS, RDN, CDN, owner and registered dietitian nutritionist at Rachel Dyckman Nutrition LLC, citing a 2015 study published in Psychiatry Research.

Im a Pharmacist, and These Are My Top 4 Go-To Immune-Support Supplements – Well+Good

"If it's not broken, don't fix it" is generally good advice for a lot of thingsyour favorite recipe, the gallery wall that took forever to put up, the workout routine your body has been lovingbut something it doesn't necessarily apply to? Your immune system.

While, no, you don't need to "fix" your immune system (nor could you), there are steps you can take to support it, even when you're feeling fantastic.

"Nothing is more critical for a healthy life than a well-functioning immune system," says clinical community pharmacist Kathy M. Campbell, PharmD. The goal, according to Dr. Campbell, is a Goldilocks approachyou want an immune system that's not too weak and not too strong.

"Nothing is more critical for a healthy life than a well-functioning immune system."

"A healthy, well-functioning immune system is an easy thing to take for granted," she says, but luckily, there are habits that can help support your immune systemsome of which you may already be doing. Eating nutrient-packed foods, prioritizing sleep, and getting some direct sunlight are all necessary for overall health, and they can also go a long way in supporting your immune system, Dr. Campbell says.

Assuming those habits are in check, turning to supplements for immune support can be a great next step. "Appropriately chosen, high-quality supplementation can be a very effective addition in supporting a healthy immune system," Dr. Campbell says.

Ready to start stocking up? First, talk to your healthcare provider. Next, turn to a trusted brand like Nature Made, which creates science-backed supplements for plenty of health needs, including immune support.

Okay, so yes, you want all of your supplements to be high-quality, but Dr. Campbell really emphasizes it for multivitamins. "It's important to provide a balance of all nutrients in an effort to minimize over-supplementation with a single nutrient," Dr. Campbell says. A high-quality multivitamin should do that balancing act for you.

Next up for supplements that support immune health? No surprise: good ole vitamin C. "Vitamin C is an essential nutrient, which cannot be synthesized by humans and therefore must be consumed by diet or supplementation," Dr. Campbell says. "Function is key in many biochemical processes within the immune system."

Vitamin D may already be high on your must-have list (hello, sunshine), but if you're supplementing with it, make sure to take it with vitamin K for the biggest impact, Dr. Campbell says. She also notes vitamin K can often be found in quality multis (pssstit's in Nature Made Women's Multivitamin Softgels). Vitamin D has multiple roles in the body, and can help support immune health, she says.

Optimal zinc levels help support a healthy immune system, Dr. Campbell says, but you'll also want to be careful not to overdue it. If you're supplementing with zinc, she recommends combining it with copper, which can often be found in multivitamins, likeyep, you guessed itNature Made Women's Multivitamin Softgels. Your immune system says thank you in advance.

One Major Side Effect of Taking Calcium Supplements, Says Science | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Posted: October 1, 2021 at 7:48 am

Some people may benefit from taking a calcium supplement daily more so than others, however, some experts argue they're not even worth itespecially since research indicates that ingesting calcium at that level may increase your risk of developing heart complications.Still, it's evident that Americans often don't get enough calcium through diet alone.

According to the current USDA Dietary Guidelines, calcium is one of the four dietary components that are of public health concern for the general U.S. population. As is the case with potassium, dietary fiber, and vitamin D, calcium is a nutrient that's often under-consumed, which can increase a person's risk of several associated health issues, namely osteoporosis. In fact, nearly 30% of men and 60% of women above the age of 19 don't consume enough calcium on a regular basis.

RELATED:The #1 Best Food to Eat for Calcium, Says Science

It's especially important for adults between the ages of 19 and 30 to consume adequate levels of calcium through diet, as bone mass is still actively accruing during this time of life. It's also imperative for post-menopausal women to meet the recommended intake of calcium each day to help prevent bone loss. When a woman enters menopause, her estrogen levels drop, which can cause her bone mineral density to decline.

For reference, a woman between the age of 19 and 50 requires about 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily, whereas one who's 51 and older needs closer to 1,200 milligrams per day. For a man, it's recommended that those 19 and above consume about 1,000 milligrams of the mineral each day. However, a supplement may not be the best solution. Some experts argue that the body may not absorb calcium from a pill as effectively as when it's consumed from foods that are rich in calcium.

Another concern? Ingesting too much calcium via a supplement may also put you at risk of major heart issues. In an article from Johns Hopkins Medicine, Erin Michos, MD, MHS, associate director of preventive cardiology for the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease at the university said she was concerned that calcium supplements could contribute to heart attacks and heart disease. She explained that the body can't process more than 500 milligrams of calcium at a time, meaning any excess amount of the mineral could deposit in the artery walls, or even trigger a blood clot.

Depending on the dosage, calcium supplements can contain anywhere from 400-1,000 milligrams of the mineral. Antacids like Tums and Rolaids can also hike up your calcium intake, as each pill or chew provides 200-300 milligrams of calcium. Aside from experiencing potential heart problems, other issues related to excess calcium consumption include constipation, kidney stones, and even cognitive problems, per the Cleveland Clinic.

Bottom line, if you're going to take calcium supplements, make sure you don't exceed 500 milligrams per dose. However, sourcing calcium through food choices should be the top priority!

Getting enough essential vitamins and minerals is a vital part of maintaining good health especially as you age. Changing nutritional needs and dietary restrictions can affect your vitamin intake over time. This makes it challenging to get the nutrients you need to keep your bones and muscles strong and ensure that other body systems are working correctly. To help you stay healthy, heres a list of vitamins and minerals adults 55 and over should consider taking daily, as well as the benefits they provide.

Vitamin A

NIH recommends 15 mg for all adults. Food sources include vegetable oils, nuts like peanuts and almonds, wheat germ, broccoli, and spinach.

Vitamin K

Calcium

Calcium helps keep bones and teeth strong and healthy. It also helps muscles move and nerves carry messages between the brain and body. Furthermore, this powerhouse mineral helps blood vessels move blood throughout the body and releases critical hormones and enzymes that support multiple body functions.

NIH recommends 1,000 mg for adult men 51-70, 1,200 mg for adult women 51-70, and 1,200 mg for all adults 71 and older. Food sources include milk, yogurt, cheese, kale, broccoli, canned sardines and salmon, most grains, and other fortified foods as labeled.

Food v. Supplements

According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, people should follow a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage and focus on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and beverages and stay within calorie limits. The core food groups are vegetables, fruits, grains, protein, dairy, and oils. Many experts agree that eating appropriate foods is the preferred way to get necessary nutrients.

Aging-related changes, however, such as tooth loss, chronic illness, and changes in appetite can impact the amount of nutrients a body absorbs or a persons ability to eat certain foods. In this case, older adults may need to take a men's multivitaminor women's vitamin or mineral supplement to get what they need to maximize their health and stay as active as possible.

An important note: You should always consult your physician before making any dietary changes, including vitamin and mineral supplements. Taking more than recommended amounts may be harmful.
