Elon Musk Says SpaceX Trillion-Dollar Starship Can Bring 250 Tons of Payload to Orbit; How About Reusable Rockets? – Science Times

Posted: October 21, 2021 at 10:35 pm

The SpaceX Starship is another topic of conversation because of its popularity amid the FAA's environmental study, determining whether the firm can launch from its Boca Chica site. People debate how much the Starship can carry, particularly when it approaches its limit and becomes a disposable spaceship. But then Elon Musk now has the answer!

The Starship rocket can carry a lot. But its payload and cargo would be determined by the arrangement with the government or corporation that demands it after it takes off. Some people compared the payload capacity of SpaceX's newest Starship to that of NASA's Saturn V rocket from the mid-20th century, which is now a museum piece.

(Photo: Photo by GIANRIGO MARLETTA/AFP via Getty Images)SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, seen on the launch pad at Launch Complex 39A less than 24 hours before it is scheduled to launch its Crew-2 mission, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, April 22, 2021. - A crewed SpaceX mission to the International Space Station has been postponed by a day due to weather concerns downrange of the launch site, NASA said Wednesday. Liftoff had been scheduled for Thursday but because of unfavorable conditions along the Atlantic coast, it will now be set for 5:49 am (0949 GMT) Friday April 23.

A reusable rocket would be more cost-effective for a spaceflight, especially because SpaceX can reuse the spaceship for another trip.

Furthermore, it appears that Elon Musk and SpaceX desire the Starship to be more reusable. This would be less expensive for the firm to build. Reusability is also a strong proponent of orbital rockets' complete and quick reusability for various applications. Moreover, Musk, with a Twitter handle @elonmusk, told CNBC Space Reporter Michael Sheetz in a tweetthat reusability is the "holy grail" of orbital rocketry.

The cargo and payload options for the Starship would depend on whether other firms would be willing to work with SpaceX and pay top price for it.

Elon Musk also stated that there are two Starship versions. These are expendable or reusable variants. He said in another tweetthat the Starship could transport up to 250 tons of whatever cargo it needs to orbit as an expendable rocket. On the other hand, the Starship has a maximum payload capacity of just 150 tons if it were a completely reusable rocket.

Expendable spacecraft are one-time-use rockets that end up as space trash or a substance that engineers must break down since these types of rockets are no longer useable.

For the time being, the SpaceX Starship is still looking into the permissions and licenses it will require for its next test flight, particularly as the FAA decides between itself and the general public. Concerned locals have expressed their worries over the Starship's operations near Boca Chica; therefore, SpaceX is awaiting its decision.

Meanwhile, Morgan Stanley, a major financial bank and wealth management business, believes SpaceX's Starship rockets would have far-reaching effects.

In a letter to investors obtained by CNBC, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said that technology advancements could change investor expectations about the space sector. Talking about space before Starship is like discussing the internet before Google, Jonas added.

Morgan Stanley's newest thoughts on SpaceX are in response to CNBC's news that the company's valuation had topped $100 billion.

Morgan Stanley believes Musk's business has built a "double flywheel" technology with its reusable rockets and Starlink internet satellites.

Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk’s space adventures aren’t a waste of cash, says UN space chief – The National

Posted: at 10:35 pm

Space tourism has a lot of positives and can help inspire humanity to protect their planet, says UN space chief Simonetta Di Pippo.

The director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, Ms Di Pippo said increased access to space would make it 'a part of our lives'.

The comments were made days after Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, suggested saving the Earth should come before space tourism. He told the BBC: Great brains and minds should be trying to repair this planet, not trying to find the next place to go and live.

Ms Di Pippo, who was visiting the Italian pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai on Monday, told The National that space tourism could benefit humanity in many ways.

It's really the attempt of bringing space closer to humanity and humanity closer to space.

"Space would become something thats outside, dark, cold and far away, but part of our lives."

On October 13, Star Trek actor William Shatner became the oldest person to go into space aboard a Blue Origin tourism flight.

Richard Branson and Elon Musk are also working on businesses that would take humans to space recreationally.

When asked about space tourism flights by billionaires Ms Di Pippo said she sees a lot of positives to the progress being made in space exploration, and that it will allow people to look back on Earth and recognise its fragility.

So, we have to work a lot in terms of the sustainability in space, but also on earth. We have [to] try and work on issues related to climate and help the planet survive in the best way possible.

We can really improve the quality of life for people on Earth, thanks to space.

"I believe that if we have more and more people experiencing what space means, it can also help in policy and decision-making processes towards supporting space.

Science experiments could also become a regular part of space tourism flights.

Sirisha Bandla, an aeronautical engineer, took a plant experiment with her when she flew on board a Virgin Galactic space tourism flight in July.

The experiment helped to measure how well passengers would be able to perform scientific activities during the 90-minute flight.

Bandla will activate three plant-filled tubes to release a preservative at critical data-collection stages during the flight: at 1g (Earth gravity level) before the rocket boost, just before entering microgravity, and after the conclusion of microgravity, Nasa said.

Ms Di Pippo also believes space tourism could help inspire people to create more spin-off technologies.

Space research and tech have helped advance many vital sectors, particularly in medicine and science.

From vaccine development and purifying water to improving baby formula, space technologies and research have been a huge benefit to life on Earth.

Since 1976, Nasa has recorded more than 2,000 space-related projects that have been commercialised and brought to the market.

These include creations such as invisible braces, water purification systems, ear thermometers and wireless headphones.

The number of satellites that each of us is using every day is really huge - when we check the weather in the morning, access the Global Navigation Satellite Systems to move from point A to point B, develop smart agricultural procedures, do telemedicine or biodiversity everything [involves] space, said Ms Di Pippo.

Elon Musk is worth as much as Bill Gates and Warren Buffett combined

Posted: October 15, 2021 at 8:56 pm

Elon Musk has entered rarified air in the world billionaire rankings. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO is not only currently the richest person in the world, but is now worth as much as fellow billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffett combined.

The 50-year-old's net worth is $230 billion as of Friday morning, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Gates sits in fourth place with $130 billion and Buffett is No. 10 with $102 billion.

Both Gates and Buffett previously held the mantle of world's richest person. Musk first passed Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to become the world's richest man in January with a net worth of $185 billion. Bezos had held the title since 2017.

Musk has added more than $60 billion to his fortune this year thanks to the strong performance of Tesla stock as well as a recent share sale at SpaceX which valued the company at $100 billion. The SpaceX deal added $11 billion to Musk's net worth, according to Bloomberg.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have a combined net worth of $232 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Elon Musk Shaves $5.5 Million Off Price of His Bay Area Mansion

Posted: at 8:56 pm

Elon Musk just shaved 15% off the price of his Bay Area mansion, and it's now available for just under $32 million.

This latest price slash comes just a month after the house was taken off the market after being last listed for $37.5 million.

The new price works out to around $2,000 per square ft., nearly double the per sq. ft. price for other houses in the area, according to Bay Area market reports.

The price cut comes on the heels of Musk's announcement that Tesla like many other companies in the tech sector, including tech giants Oracle and Hewlett PackardEnterprise will be moving its headquarters from the San Francisco Bay Area to Texas.

Musk relocated to Texas at the end of last year and tweeted in July that he was living in Austin in a $50,000 pre-fab house.

The sale of his Bay Area mansion appears to be part of Musk's plan to sell "almost all physical possessions" and "own no house."

Earlier this year, Musk said he'd sold six of his seven properties, and was renting out the Bay Area manse for events.

According to the listing, the sprawling 16,000 square feet mansion sitting on 47 acres in Hillsborough, California was built in 1916. It has 10 bathrooms and seven bedrooms, a library, a music room, and a pool.

Musk bought the property for over $23 million in 2017.

Elon Musk – History and Biography

Posted: at 8:56 pm

James Riddle Hoffa (February 14, 1913 July 30, 1975), better known as Jimmy Hoffa, was an American union activist. A reference to the working class of the 20th century, Hoffa began his union activity at the age of 18 within the trucker union. With time, he was gaining importance and enemies. He mixed with the mob and was the leader of the most important union organization in the U.S.A., the International Brotherhood of Truckers. His actions took a toll on him and in 1967 he was arrested for bribery. In 1975, he disappeared after having dinner at a Detroit restaurant. To date, it is unknown what happened or where his body is. His disappearance was portrayed in Scorseses The Irishman.

He was born in Brazil, Indiana, on February 14, 1913. James was the son of John Hoffa and Viola Riddle. His father passed away when he was 7 years old, of Irish descent and working as a miner. When the dad died, the family moved to Detroit, where Hoffa lived the rest of his life. He studied until he was 14 years old and began working as a teenager, to help the family. At the age of 18, he began to participate in the union demonstrations of the truck drivers union, and over time he gained recognition. However, Hoffa had never driven a truck.

Despite his clear inexperience, Hoffa managed to earn the respect of all road workers thanks to his charisma and effective acting. He was thus elected president of the famous International Brotherhood of Truckers or Teamsters in 1957. From then on he would be known for his aggressive methods and connections with the Cosa Nostra (Italian mafia). It is known that Jimmy used the mob to gain notoriety and destroy his competitors, while the union served as a front to clean up dirty money from the mob.

As time went by, his relationship with Cosa Nostra became increasingly evident, becoming the target of various investigations (fraud, conspiracy, evasion, extortion, laundering). Behind them was the prosecutor Robert Kennedy, who later became a solicitor, his sole objective being the capture of Hoffa. Although he managed to leave the courts unscathed on several occasions thanks to his intimidation and bribery strategies he was finally locked up in 1967.

Hoffa had faced justice several times, so the confinement did not scare him, he planned to continue running the union and all its businesses from jail, leaving someone manageable in command. But this did not turn out as he expected, his puppet rebelled and the mafia took advantage of his confinement to expand their business with more facilities. It was clear that everyone was better off without Hoffa at the helm.

In 1971 his sentence was commuted and Hoffa returned to work, he tried to regain his place and strength, but had little luck, because the mafia was clear that the business was better without him. The day he arrived, on July 30, 1975, he was summoned by Anthony Provenzano and Anthony Giacalone, two gangster bosses who were tired of his instance. They summoned him to a restaurant in Detroit, but never showed up, Hoffa waited for more than an hour and then got into a car, disappearing ever since. Nobody saw him again.

Jimmy was powerful, but he had made many enemies and was in the crosshairs of the mob, making his disappearance one of the most famous of the 20th century. His body was never found and in 1982 he was presumed dead. Although over time many took credit for his disappearance (and his death) from him, little is known for sure.

One of the possible culprits is perhaps Frank Sheeran, the Irishman, Hoffas henchman, who, pressured by the gangsters, would have killed the union leader. According to Sheerans version, that day he would have taken Hoffa to a house, where he shot him three times, and then moved his body to a still uncertain place.

His body and his disappearance became one of the best-known mysteries of the time. To date, the fate of his body is unknown. Many say it is buried, others that it was dismembered and thrown into a river, and others that it was compacted. There were many complaints about the discovery of his body, but all false.

His legacy was continued by his son, the current head of the International Brotherhood of Truckers, James P. Hoffa.

He was married to Josephine Poszywak and was the father of James P. Hoffa and Barbara Ann Crancer.

On July 30, 1982, he was declared legally dead.

Scorseses The Irishman premiered on Netflix in 2019. The film follows Hoffas hitman and right-hand man, Frank Sheeran, as he thus narrates his story and participation in the disappearance of Hoffa. In the film, Hoffa is played by Al Pacino, while Sheeran and the prosecutor Kennedy are played by Robert De Niro and Jack Huston.

How Elon Musk pronounces ‘X A-12,’ his new son’s name – CNET

Posted: at 8:56 pm

Elon Musk/Twitter

Elon Musk and singer Grimes welcomed a son on Monday, but the world puzzled over the baby's name. Musk said it was "X A-12," but it wasn't until Thursday, when the Tesla and SpaceX founder appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience, that he confirmed the name's pronunciation.

"How do you say the name?" Rogan asked. "Is it a placeholder?"

Apparently not. Musk says the name is pronounced "X Ash A Twelve," pretty much just as it looks. ("" is a character used in some languages, including Danish and Norwegian. It's often pronounced "ash," but some people pronounce each letter, saying "A E.")

"First of all, my partner's the one that mostly came up with the name," Musk said of Grimes. "I mean it's just X, the letter X, um, and the '' is pronounced, 'Ash,' and then, A-12 is my contribution." He went on to say that A-12 stood for "Archangel 12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever."

If you want to hear Musk say it, you don't have to fast-forward through much of the video. Rogan asks him to pronounce it just 37 seconds in to the podcast.

Grimes herself tweeted out a more detailed explanation of why the various name parts were chosen. She called X "the unknown variable," and said that was "my elven spelling of Ai," which she explained as "love and/or artificial intelligence."

As for the A-12, she called the plane "our favorite aircraft," going on to tout its "no weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent." Grimes also noted that the A in A-12 stood for "Archangel," which she said was "my favorite song." She didn't specify which song -- numerous songs are titled "Archangel" -- but some music sites are guessing she could mean the song by the band Burial. Grimes once cited Burial's "Archangel" song as a favorite on her Tumblr.

She ended her tweet with the words "metal rat" and emoji of crossed swords and a rat. 2020 is the year of the "metal rat" according to the Chinese zodiac, although of course it can also simply mean "fan of heavy metal music."

Grimes mistyped SR-17 instead of SR-71, but Musk corrected her in another tweet, writing, "SR-71, but yes."

To which she replied, "I am recovering from surgery and barely alive so may my typos b forgiven but, damnit. That was meant to be profound."

Whatever the name means, it's possible it won't appear on the baby's official California birth certificate -- at least not in the spelling that's been shared so far. A California family-law attorney told People magazine that while the name isn't illegal, the state doesn't allow symbols on birth certificates. Apostrophes, such as in a last name like O'Connor, are allowed, and it would seem that the hyphen might also make it through, but the "" might cause the certificate to be rejected, and the parents would have to submit it again.

Musk also noted that he was happy the baby was born on May 4, commonly known as Star Wars Day for the saying "May the fourth (Force) be with you."

This wasn't Musk's only memorable appearance on Rogan's podcast. In 2018, he appeared on the show and apparently took one puff of a marijuana cigarette. Recreational marijuana is, and was then, legal in California, but it remains illegal at the federal level.

With Just 7 Words, Elon Musk Tweeted a Remarkable Truth About Talent That Most Companies Ignore Completely – Inc.

Posted: at 8:56 pm

You might remember that, a few months ago, Tesla held an artificial-intelligence-focused event. If you do remember it, it's probably as the event when the company's CEO, Elon Musk, introduced the Tesla Robot. Well, sort of. The character that danced onstage was actually just an actor in a robot costumer. Andwhether Tesla ever intends to introduce a walking humanoid robot that you can buy and have in your house is questionable.

On the other hand, Tesla's commitment to improving its A.I. capabilities seems real, at least given the amount of hiring it's been doing over the past few weeks. In that sense, the A.I. event was a success, in that it was less a showcase of future technology and more a recruiting effort to attract new talent.

Apparently, the company has seen a surge in applications, so much so that it appears it's having a hard time following up with all of them. In a tweet last week, Musk apologized if the company hadn't gotten back with applicants.

"Sorry if we've been too dumb to respond to you," said Musk's tweet. "Please cite evidence of exceptional ability in a few bullet points. Nothing else matters."

Clearly, the company is motivated to sift through all of the interested applicantsto find the most qualified and capable candidates. That can be a challenge for any business, and Tesla is no exception.

Of course, Musk didn't end with rsum and cover-letter tips for potential future Tesla A.I. employees. He also--probably inadvertently--highlighted one of the biggest challenges for companies, and offers the simplest solution.

Ideally, Tesla would like its team located near one of its offices. Obviously, it's beneficial to Tesla to have the best people together in the same place as it builds a team. And, for Tesla, A.I. is an extremely important piece of the company's goal of fully self-driving vehicles, and there is certainly a benefit to having all of those people together tackling big problems.

There's a bigger benefit, however, which is to have the very best people working on them. Some of those people might not be all that interested in relocating to Palo Alto, California, or Austin.

I kind of love those last seven words from Musk's tweet:" ... inefficiency of distance is overcome by talent."

Obviously, being remote introduces inefficiencies. It makes things more complicated. Sure, it's not as easy as having everyone in the same room working on the same problem. Yes, there are definitely things to consider. Coordinating schedules across time zones and having meetings over Zoom is messy, and in some casesexhausting. In some cases, it's probably not worth it.

Over the past 18 months, however, it's become clear that a lot of the work we thought had to be done in a collaborative environment in an office can also be done remotely. It's also worth it when it means you're able to have the best people in the world putting their experience and expertise towardyour problem. Especially when many of those people have realized that they don't have to live their entire life working for a company that isn't willing to be flexible to accommodate their life.

There's a tradeoff involved for both Tesla and for its employees. For the company, having the very best employees is worth being flexible about where they live. The hiring process is about meeting the needs of the company by attracting the best individuals for the roles you need to fill.

If you want to attract the very best talent, which seems like something every business should want, you have to be flexible. You have to be willing to meet people where they are, and accommodate their needs.

Unfortunately, that hasn't always been the case. For a long time, most of the decisions in terms of how and where we worked were dictated by employers. If you wanted a great job, you didn't always have the luxury of saying that you weren't willing to relocate. In some cases, that's still true today. Many companies still haven't figured this out.

That's why Musk's tweet is so brilliant--it acknowledges that things have changed, and the way you evaluate the tradeoff between having the best talentand having them in the office has to change.

Obviously, the type of talent Tesla is looking for is highly specialized. There's a limited talent pool of people who are experienced in artificial intelligence, and if Tesla wants to attract that talent, it has to be attractive to those candidates, even if they aren't interested in moving across the country.

It's an important lesson, because many businesses pretend that things are headed back to the same arrangement we were used to before the pandemic upended everything we thought we knew about work. The thing is, there's really no reason for that to be the case, especially if what you really care about is attracting the most talented people.

Fortunately, there's a solution. If you want to hire the best, just be flexible.
