Stephen Colbert Blasts Elon Musk for Not Paying His Fair Share in Taxes – The Daily Beast
Posted: November 25, 2021 at 11:57 am
On Thanksgiving Eve, Stephen Colbert dedicated a chunk of his Late Show monologue to a certain tax-avoiding billionaire, Elon Muskby all accounts the richest man in the world.
For some reason, theres always lots of billionaire news, offered Colbert. Ill give you the latest in tonights installment of my long-running segment: Rich people, theyre just not like us. Us pay taxes.
With that, Colbert dug in, addressing Musks little Twitter feud with Bernie Sanders over the Vermont senators suggestion that Musk pay his fair share in taxes.
First up: SpaceX founder Elon Musk has been a little prickly ever since Democrats suggested the wealthy pay any taxes, explained Colbert. For instance, recently Bernie Sanders tweeted, We must demand that the extremely wealthy pay their fair share. Period. To which Musk replied, I keep forgetting that youre still alive.
It was a bizarre reply, all things considered. Hey, buddy: You cannot talk to Bernie like that, Colbert shot back.
Then, he did his best Bernie Sanders impression: You better watch your mouth, space boy! Im from Brooklyn, the BK, you keep talkin to me like that, Im gonna slap the tax money you owe right off your top one percent. Remember, in space, nobody can hear me put my foot up your ass!

Desktop bust and custom iPhone 13 Pro made from melted-down Tesla car for the Elon Musk dork in your life – The Register
Posted: at 11:57 am
Here's one for those with their heads crammed so far up Elon Musk's arse they see the light when he yawns a desktop bust and custom iPhone 13 Pro design dedicated to the centibillionaire meme machine, both allegedly made from the molten body parts of a Tesla car.
One doesn't have to scroll far down anything the Tesla and SpaceX founder tweets to find legions of sycophants lapping up his bullshit pearls of wisdom, of which half he claims are composed while he's taking a dump. Suddenly everything makes sense.
Moving swiftly on from the concerning poop rate, helpfully highlighted by Neil "Nobody Asked You" deGrasse Tyson, Musk's most faithful adherents appear to be the target audience because who else could live with that smug mug judging your work?
Seems like a waste of a good car to us. But wait, there's more.
Both, we concede, bear more resemblance to their inspiration than the life-sized polyester resin statue inflicted on New York, which gave off more "tubby middle-aged bloke on street corner" than "godlike genius" vibes.
But who, we hear you ask, is responsible for these tasteful designs? It's Caviar, a "famous luxury gadgets brand" from Russia, we are told. Any man who must say "I am king" is no true king at all. Likewise, Caviar can't simply claim to be "famous" when no one's heard of them, and the products themselves scream "notice me, senpai" as much as any of Musk's Twitter followers. Here's the guff anyway:
Caviar founder Sergey Kitov added: "I believe that smartphones and busts created from a Tesla car are a new level for us. In my opinion, these new items embody the soul of Elon Musk [like a horcrux?! ed] and, therefore, they will bring their owners the success and creativity of this outstanding individual."
As we head into the festive season, they will make a nice $8,300 stocking filler. Meanwhile, click here if you need help escaping a cult.

Elon Musk responds to customer’s tweet on Tesla app issue in 3 minutes, fixes it and shares update – YourStory.com
Posted: at 11:57 am
Elon Musk's electric vehicle venture, Tesla, saw its app go down for some users for a few hours on Friday, leaving them without keyless access to their cars. This is because some Tesla users utilise the Tesla app to gain access to their cars.
With several complaints from Tesla owners in Canada and the United States coming in, the Tesla CEO set to work to understand and fix the problem preventing customers from unlocking their cars.
In many instances where customers publicly raise issues with a company's products or services, it is rare that a CEO gets personally involved, leave alone respond immediately.
Musk, who is known to be active on Twitter, came back online in under five hours to respond to the same customer and share an update.
Reportedly, Tesla pushed an update to its app earlier this week, but it was not clear whether Friday's issue was due to this update.
Musk's swift response to the customer and his public disclosure of the cause of the issue adds to the narrative that the Tesla and SpaceX CEO bats for accountability and transparency.
Earlier this month, the Director of theUnited Nations' World Food Programme (WFP) David Beasley stated in an interview that just 2 percent ($6B) of Elon Musks wealth could solve world hunger.
The statement stirred a heated debate on Twitter after Dr Eli David took to the networking platform for a fact check, following which Elon Musk himself got involved.
Beasley responded, by saying, I can assure you that we have the systems in place for transparency and open source accounting. Your team can review and work with us to be totally confident of such."

‘Avenge the dinosaurs!’ Elon Musk reacts to NASA’s launch of spacecraft that will crash into asteroid – Business Today
Posted: at 11:57 am
Known for his quirky messages all over the social media, especially on Twitter, Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk has thrown yet another anecdote on the recently launched NASA test mission of an asteroid-deflecting spacecraft.
The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) experiment lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in the US on Wednesday.
Taking to Twitter, Musk, who enjoys a comfortable 64 million followers on the micro-blogging site, reacted "Avenge the dinosaurs!" while retweeting NASA's announcement of the test mission.
Within minutes, Musk's tweet was inundated with over 28,000 likes and more than 3,000 comments with users rushing in to share memes, GIFs, cryptocurrency-based ideas and much more.
A spacecraft that must ultimately crash to succeed was launched late on Tuesday from California on a NASA mission to demonstrate the world's first planetary defense system, designed to deflect an asteroid from a potential doomsday collision with Earth.
The DART payload, about the size of a vending machine, was released from the booster a few minutes after launch to begin a 10-month journey into space, some 6.8 million miles (11 million km) from Earth.
Moments later the rocket's reusable lower stage flew back to Earth and safely touched down on a landing vessel floating in the Pacific in what has become a routine part of the cost-cutting launch sequence pioneered by SpaceX.
DART will fly under the guidance of NASA's flight directors until the last hours of its odyssey, when control will be handed over to an autonomous on-board navigation system.
The mission's finale will test spacecraft's ability to alter an asteroid's trajectory with sheer kinetic force, plowing into it at high speed to nudge the space boulder off course just enough to keep our planet out of harm's way.
DART's target is an asteroid "moonlet" the size of a football stadium that orbits a chunk of rock five times larger in a binary asteroid system named Didymos, the Greek word for twin.
Separately, Musk sold about $1.05 billion in stock on Wednesday, November 24. The sales were scheduled in September to exercise options that were set to expire in 2022.
Musk has sold a total of $9.85 billion in Tesla stock this month, including the $6.9 billion he sold the week of November 10 and another $1.9 billion he sold on Novemer 15 and November 16.
Some of the shares were sold in part to satisfy tax obligations related to an exercise of stock options. Musk and his trust still hold more than 169 million shares in the company.

Elon Musk is now the richest person in the world, passing …
Posted: November 23, 2021 at 4:22 pm
Elon Musk just became the richest person in the world, with a net worth of more than $185 billion, according to CNBC calculations.
Thursday's increase in Tesla's share price pushed Musk past Jeff Bezos, who had been the richest person since 2017 and is currently worth about $184 billion. Musk's wealth surge over the past year marks the fastest rise to the top of the rich list in history and is a dramatic financial turnaround for the outspoken entrepreneur who just 18 months ago was in the headlines for Tesla's rapid cash burn and his personal leverage against the company's stock.
Musk started 2020 worth about $27 billion, and was barely in the top 50 richest people.
Tesla's rocketing share price which has increased more than ninefold over the past year and his generous pay package have added more than $150 billion to his net worth.
Amazon's share price has remained more subdued due to the potential for increased regulation from Washington.
Musk passed Warren Buffett in July to become the seventh-richest person. In November, Musk raced past Bill Gates to become the second-richest person. Musk has gained more wealth over the past 12 months than Gates' entire net worth of $132 billion.
Tesla's shares closed Thursday at $816.04, up nearly 8%. The company's market value has grown to more than $760 billion.
Musk was also No. 1 on Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The list had him within $3 billion of Bezos' net worth on Wednesday. The Forbes Real Time Billionaires List had Musk about $7 billion behind Bezos after the market close Thursday. Forbes pegged Bezos' net worth at $184.6 billion and Musk at $177.2 billion. Forbes, however, may not be including the value of Musk's options, which he received as part of his pay package, to buy more than 33 million shares of Tesla.

As Tesla Stock Rebounds, Elon Musk’s Fortune Surpasses $300 Billion Again – Forbes
Posted: at 4:22 pm
When Elon Musk tweets, markets listenand the CEOs own net worth can shift by billions. On Monday, after Musk tweeted that Teslas Model 3 Plaid vehicle would be available in China as soon as March, Teslas stock jumped almost 2%, capping off five straight days of gains for the company and adding $4.6 billion to the eccentric billionaires net worth.
Elon Musk is once again worth more than $300 billionan unheard of net worth just one month ago. (Photo by Joe Raedle/Getty Images)
Musks fortune now stands at $300.8 billion, marking the second time hes passed the previously untouched $300 billion net worth threshold. He first broke the barrier three weeks ago when rental car giant Hertz announced a massive Tesla order that sent Teslas market capitalization soaring past $1 trillion.
But Musks own tweetsand actionsderailed his financial ascent. Teslas stock took a hit two weeks after the Hertz order, when Musk asked millions of Twitter users if he should sell 10% of his estimated 23% Tesla stakesupposedly in the wake of a short-lived tax proposal on the unrealized stock gains of billionaires. Musk began unloading shares days later, shaving $61 billion from Teslas market value. So far, the chief executive has sold nearly $9 billion worth of Tesla stock, with about $3 billion of the sum going to cover a tax bill on stock options hes been simultaneously exercising. Though his cash pile grew as a result of the sales, Musks overall net worth tumbled more than $50 billion before vaulting back above $300 billion on Monday.
Musk has also taken to Twitter in recent weeks to troll progressive politicians, like billionaire critic Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), who responded to the poll. Whether or not the worlds wealthiest man pays any taxes at all shouldnt depend on the results of a Twitter poll. Its time for the Billionaires Income Tax, the lawmaker wrote, meeting a crude response from Musk.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) found himself in the crosshairs too. We must demand that the extremely wealthy pay their fair shares. Period, Sanders recently tweeted. The next day, Musk took aim at the 80-year-old lawmaker: I keep forgetting that youre still alive, Musk wrote in response. Want me to sell more stock, Bernie? Just say the word
Musk remains the wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes estimates, $95.3 billion richer than second place Jeff Bezos, whos worth $205.5 billion as of Mondays market close.
I aspire to comedy, Musk tweeted on Monday, just before the Model 3 Plaid tweet that pushed up his fortune by severalbillion dollars. Its not clear what, if anything, Musk has done to make people laugh.

Elon Musk, Binance CEO Argue on Twitter After Musk Called Its Handling of Dogecoin Glitch ‘Shady’ – Business Insider
Posted: at 4:22 pm
We are so sorry! We bumped into a system failure and couldnt take your email this time.
Thank you for signing up!
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, got into a Twitter spat with Changpeng "CZ" Zhao, the CEO of the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, after Musk called the platform's handling of its dogecoin glitch "shady."
Binance suspended dogecoin withdrawals on November 11 because of a glitch after a network update. The crypto exchange said it would resume withdrawals once the problem had been resolved, but that the suspension could last until November 29.
Musk, who has previously called dogecoin his favorite cryptocurrency, tweeted Zhao in the early hours of Tuesday morning and asked, "What's going on with your Doge customers?"
"Sounds shady," Musk added.
Binance replied on its corporate Twitter account that it was "not shady just frustrating," and that it was working on it.
"Doge holders using Binance should be protected from errors that are not their fault," Musk replied.
Zhao also replied to Musk on his personal Twitter account, saying that Binance was "pretty certain" that it was an issue with the latest doge wallet, and he apologized for any inconvenience it had caused. He also linked to a November 2 article by The Guardian about Tesla recalling almost 12,000 US vehicles because of a software glitch and asked, "What happened here?"
Musk and Zhao have clashed in the past. In a February interview with Bloomberg, Zhao said he was surprised that Musk was an advocate of dogecoin.
"I strongly believe that he's not really associated with Dogecoin in any way," Zhao said.
And in another interview in June, Zhao said that Musk should be more careful about his tweets on cryptocurrencies.

Videos and online articles are all very well, but some of us still like a good, solid book, paper or electronic, and its a little surprising that there arent more books about the 21st centurys most exciting and most widely-discussed company.
When I first releasedmy history of Teslain 2014, I expected to have the field to myself for only a short time, before a real bookone with a hard cover and celebrity blurbs on the jacketappeared in airport bookstores. As it turned out, my experience paralleled the history of Tesla. As Marc Tarpenning told me, We believed (quite naively), that once the Roadster was out and people saw that you could make a compelling electric car, all the car companies would jump on this idea. Fifteen years later, they still really havent.
Yes, Ashlee Vance releaseda very good biography of Elon Muskin 2015, but this included only a fairly brief discussion of Tesla, and of course, its now six years old. Yes, a few hardbacks and paperbacks have appeared since then, but these have either focused on the vehicles themselves (for example,Getting Ready for Model 3by EVANNEXs Roger Pressman), or on their writers personal impressions of Tesla. As far as a comprehensive history of the company goes, I had the field to myself until now (it hasnt made me richso much for the first-mover advantage).
Now Tim Higgins, a longtime writer for the Wall Street Journal, has releasedPower Play: Tesla, Elon Musk, and the Bet of the Century(Random House, 2021, 362 pages).
For true followers of the Tesla story, theres a lot to like in this book. In fact, I would go so far as to call it a must-read, because theres a wealth of material here that has never appeared publicly before. Higgins has enjoyed unprecedented accesshe interviewed Tesla co-founders JB Straubel and the elusive Martin Eberhard, along with hundreds of former Tesla employees (many of whom spoke under condition of anonymity). He also somehow gained access to copies of emails exchanged by company execsa treasure trove of firsthand information about the early days, and about several controversial episodes.
There are a number of previously untold stories here, and new aspects of familiar stories. In several cases, Higginss findings reveal interesting new information about events that had been widely covered, but not fully elucidated.
We already knew that, when the Tesla pioneersdesigned the Roadsters battery pack, they were obsessive about safety. Higgins reveals that their caution was inspired by a couple of spectacular battery fires that occurred when the team first started fooling around with the then-new lithium-ion batteries. He also gives us some hitherto-unreported details about the interaction between Martin Eberhard and the AC Propulsion team.
A lot of people are entranced by the reports that Tesla once considered a merger with Apple, or Google, or both (I dont share the fascinationit didnt happen, so who cares who discussed it and when?). In 2015,Ashlee Vance caused controversywhen he wrote that, according to two people with direct knowledge of the deal, Elon Musk and Larry Page discussed a deal in which Google would acquire Tesla. Page called this a rumor, and Musk said that the deal never progressed beyond very informal discussions.
This dubious anecdote generated far more media coverage than anything else in Mr. Vances book, a fact that apparently was not lost on Mr. Higgins. His book includes a similar headline-grabbing tale, attributed to people who heard Musks version of events, that Musk proposed an acquisition deal to Apple CEO Tim Cook, with the bizarre condition that Musk would become the CEO of Apple.
Following the books publication, the two zillionaires stoked the rumor mill further with a pair of unconvincing denials. Musk said he reached out to Tim Cook to discuss the possibility of Apple acquiring Tesla, but that Cook refused a meeting. Cook claimed, implausibly, that he has never spoken to Elon. The speculation will continueperhaps these unidentified people with knowledge are aliens...or Elvis?
Above: Author Tim Higgins talks about Power Play and how the book evolved over the time he started writing it (YouTube:SAE International)
There are a lot of other stories in this book that I find more interesting (and better documented). The role ofPeter Rawlinson(now the CEO ofLucid) in the Tesla story appears to have been even more important than we thought. We knew that Rawlinson was one of the main designers of Model S. As Higgins tells it, he also played a large role in forming Teslas overall strategy. Rawlinson was hired when the development of Model S was in its early stages. A week into his new job, he had the balls to tell Elon Musk that he needed to scrap the existing Model S program and start over.
Rawlinson insisted that Model S needed to be built from the ground up as an EV, not cobbled together from components of existing gas vehicles as the Roadster had been (Musk wascoming around to the same view). Tesla was working with Daimler on a plan to build Model S on a platform used for the Mercedes E-Class. Rawlinson shot that proposal down, and Model S became his baby. The policy of designing the best vehicles possible, regardless of cost, and regardless of auto industry tradition, became one of the cornerstones of Teslas corporate ethos.
Another revelation is that the road to the Tesla/Panasonic battery partnership was far longer and rockier than previously reported. It was JB Straubels job to line up a battery supplier for the Roadster, and it was wearing him out. The big companies (then, as now, all based in Asia) wanted nothing to do with EVsin their view, the potential sales volume was tiny, and the risk of bad press from battery fires was huge.
Panasonic exec Kurt Kelty, a Californian with deep roots in Japan, was known for rejecting requests from startups like Tesla. But somehow, Kelty caught the bug, quit Panasonic to work for Tesla, and became the companys secret weapon in its struggle to secure a battery supply. The quest lasted many months, but Kelty finally prevailed, and the rest is history. Its possible that, without Keltys connections, and deep understanding of Japanese business culture, Tesla might never have gotten off the ground.
In 2018, when Elon Musk floatedan ill-considered plan to take Tesla private, it wasnt clear whether the funding secured that he had mentioned had ever existed, or if it represented a deal that fell apart. Higgins tells us that, a week before the tweet heard round the internet, Musk had met with representatives of Saudi Arabias sovereign investment fund, and that the Saudis, who were hoping for a Gigafactory to be built in their country, had made Musk a vague promise of support for a going-private deal.
In addition to Rawlinson and Kelty, several other key figures in Teslas history get their due here: Tim Blankenship, who almost single-handedly devised the companys sales strategy; Rik Avalos, a recruiter who hired some of Teslas brightest stars; Gilbert Passin, who helped to broker the sweetheart deal under which Tesla bought its Fremont factory from Toyota, and played a major role in setting up Teslas manufacturing operations. Its good to read more about the contributions of these folks, who have generally gotten short shrift in media coverage of Tesla, most of which tends to focus squarely on you-know-who.
Speaking of that volatile visionary, Mr. Musk doesnt come off as a very likable guy in these pages. Former employees describe a my-way-or-the-highway attitude, complete with temper tantrums and summary firings. True, allegations by former employees (many of them less than gruntled) always need to be taken with a grain of lithium salt, but Musks erratic behavior has been reported by many over the years, and a variant thereof has often been on public display via his Twitter feed. Heres what the man himself had to say about Higginss work: Most, but not all, of what you read in this book is nonsense.
I do have one serious criticism of this book (Im one of those teachers who simply dont give As). Higgins writes in an extremely casual, conversational style, and more scholarly readers may find his cavalier treatment of the English language to be a distraction. Some parts of the book read like an Elon Musk tweet. Grammatical errors, bizarre sentence constructions, inconsistent style and dubious word choices abound.
This is far from rare in published books, but I was surprised to see it in a work by such a venerable and decorated author as Higgins. To be fair, the ultimate responsibility for such shoddy workmanship rests with the publisher, not the writer. Perhaps the sales of this volume will allow Random House to engage the services of a skilled copy editor for the next edition.
Like many of the animadversions so often leveled against Tesla (and EVs in general), Higginss stylistic stumbles and secrecy about sources represent room for improvement, not a reason not to buy. I have to hoist my hat high to Higgins, and recommend this book to any follower of the Tesla story.

Elon Musk The Boring Co.: Fallout-Themed Party on Vegas Loop Tunnel Soon, Project to Change Traffic Problems – Tech Times
Posted: at 4:22 pm
Elon Musk and The Boring Company are soon throwing a party for the Vegas Loop Tunnel, and it would be with a "Fallout" theme as it greatly resembles the settings of the game. The party would be happening once the restrictions have been lifted and there are no more health risks that would take place when conducting the party to celebrate the tunnels and their traffic solutions.

The world's richest billionaire and CEO, Elon Musk, has yet again teased another "Fallout-themed" party for the Las Vegas Loop Tunnel that was made by The Boring Company. The underground tunnel highly resembles the game as said by fans from Twitter, and it should only befitting that it would be celebrated in an appropriate theme.
Musk respondedand said that it would be happening when health restrictions have been cleared out, or when it is already safe to have a party to avoid the mass spread of the virus or any problems. Also, mass gatherings such as a party need a permit, and it would be hard to secure one as it is still the time of the pandemic.

The topic of The Boring Co. has resurfaced as a videofrom the Tesla Silicon Valley Club has shown a massive traffic problem that is seen on the freeway, showing how cars flock up during rush hour. Here, Musk responded that the solution is The Boring Co.'s tunnel project that would have people going under and riding a Tesla.
Earlier this January, the multi-tech CEO has teased that a "Fallout-themed" partywould be thrown for the public once the restrictions have been lifted or are permitted by the county or local government. But fast forward to about 11 months and people are still looking at the four corners of their home due to limited liberty as it is not yet advised to go out.
Nevertheless, traffic is still a problem in the country, and as Musk has said, the only solution to that is going underneath and having a tunnel commute system with The Boring Co. and Tesla EVs. Many projects have been the focus of the Loop project, and it includes states like Texasand Floridaand solves their traffic problems.
Underneath Las Vegas, The Boring Co. connects the people towards different partner places and avoids the traffic at the surface, which has seen a massive problem in the county. Musk and The Boring Company's presence there has changed the way that people would see public transportation, and it would be aboard autonomous Tesla electric vehicles.
