Elon Musk: I would be shocked if Tesla does not achieve Full Self-Driving that is safer than human drivers this year (and 5 years ahead of everyone) -…

Posted: February 3, 2022 at 3:50 pm

Elon Musk gave an update on his expected timeline for Tesla achieving Full Self-Driving capability, and he now says that he would be shocked if Tesla does not achieve Full Self-Driving safer than human this year.

We have heard that before.

Since back in 2018, Musk has been predicting that Tesla will solve full self-driving next year. The company made an early bet on hardware for self-driving, and it has since been promising that it can deliver the technology to millions of vehicles already on the road through software updates.

The CEO has updated the language around his predictions a few times.

For example, he previously talked about Tesla delivering a feature complete version of full self-driving, which means that Tesla vehicles would have the capacity to attempt to drive by themselves on both local roads and highways with driver supervision at all times, but the capacity wouldnt be good. In short, it can drive through intersections, but it often needs assistance from the driver with the goal that it gets better over time.

Tesla delivered that through its FSD Beta program in 2020, but it was a lot more limited than many people hoped and quite far from Musks original promise of Tesla having a million robotaxis on the road.

The automaker has made great progress since the release of FSD Beta, which is now being used by almost 60,000 Tesla owners in the US.

But despite this progress, its hard for many to imagine when it can lead to an actual (for real this time) full self-driving system or even if it can even happen at this point without Tesla needing a new approach with different hardware.

During Teslas Q4 2021 earnings call last week, the CEO updated his timeline for Tesla delivering full self-driving safer than human by saying that he would be shocked if it doesnt happen this year:

I would be shocked if we do not achieve Full Self-Driving safer than human this year. I would be shocked.

Now he didnt elaborate by what metric it would be considered safer than human or if that will be enough for Tesla to take responsibility for the system away from the driver, which is really the only thing that matters to consider a system self-driving.

Despite the lack of detail, the CEO was so confident that he added on Twitter this weekend that Tesla also plans on licensing its self-driving software to other automakers.

He believes that every other company developing self-driving technology is about five years behind Tesla.

Its hard to take these predictions seriously anymore, but based on Musks own standard, we should be.

When admitting to having missed a few self-driving timeline predictions, the CEO once said that you can at least track whether or not progress is being made by the fact that the predicted timelines are getting shorter and not longer.

Its not next year anymore, but this year.

Now give us access to the data that shows some progress. The anecdotal data from beta testers is nice, but we need something more concrete.

During the call last week, Musk even mentioned that beta testers would see improvements if they were to plot their beta interventions per mile.

Why doesnt Tesla collect and release this data for the whole beta fleet? That would be the best way to track progress.

Its time for Tesla to do that if it wants any credibility about delivering on its goal for full self-driving.

Elon Musk’s dreams of Mars colonization could be hindered by depopulation – Deutsche Welle

Posted: at 3:50 pm

Elon Musk wants to make humans a multiplanetary species. Colonization of Mars has been the main goal of the entrepreneurs multi-billion dollar company SpaceX since its founding two decades ago.

The billionaire has in the past argued that we need a Plan B if Earth finds itself irreversibly damaged through climate change, overpopulation, a third world war or an eventual mass extinction event.

While the jurys still out on what will ultimately render our planet uninhabitable, in January Musk tweeted a new concern: population collapse.

Contrary to what you might think, there may be some truth to his worry the world's population could decrease after the second half of the century, according toa 2020 studypublished in The Lancet by researchers from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME).

That means there might not be enough people for Musk's Mars colonization plan which the SpaceX CEO acknowledged himself in the same tweet: "If there aren't enough people for Earth, then there definitely won't be enough for Mars.

Predictions by the IHME suggest that by 2064 the global population will reach its peak at 9.73 billion, followed by a decrease of almost a billion by the end of the century. These findings show a very different picture from previous projections by the United Nations, which estimate a steady increase to around 11 billion by 2100. Musk called the UN numbers "utter nonsense in the same Twitter post.

Women play a crucial role in these estimates. The population decline is attributed mainly to decreasing birth rates women are having fewer kids. The researchers pointed out that changes in the birth rate are mostly explained by an ongoing trend of better and easier access to education and contraceptives.

But why does this happen? Evidence from Denmark could shed light on the causes. According to a 2018study by the National Bureau of Economic Research, women's earnings droppeddrastically after childbirth while men's stayed the same.

Some countries have tried to tackle these challenges with incentive programs like paid maternity leave, employment protection, child care and economic aid. A good example given by the authors is Sweden, which increased its birth rates from 1.5 in the late 1990s to 1.9 in 2019.

The researchers were also concerned that the lower birth rates tight relation to womens increased attainment of education and contraceptives could pose a real threat to their freedom and rights. Instead of implementing programs to lessen the financial blow many women experience when they become mothers, some countries might, on the contrary, prohibit or restrict access to reproductive health services to prevent population declines. They mentioned past examples like Romania in the 60s and the Soviet Union, which used restrictions and bans to try to increase fertility rates.

Although Musk might not like a less populated world, it wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, IHME researchers said. They noted it could provide relief to the environment because fewer people use fewer resources and generate fewer carbon emissions. But the authors are clear that although a decline in the population could benefit the planet, it is not a solution against climate change.

Some countries like Japan, Spain and Ukraine could face a halving or more of their population by 2100. China is predicted to fall from its current 1.4 billion people to roughly 700 million, despite the 2015 end to the one-child policy.

But not all countries would see a decline in their population. The models showed that sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa and the Middle East were the only regions expected to have a higher population in 2100 than in 2017.

On average, high-income Western Europe countries would reach a population peak before 2040, much earlier than the predicted 2064 global peak. In the case of Germany, the population would peak at 85 million by 2035 and thendecrease to about 60 million by 2100.

The predictions also point to a decreasing working population in some countries. This would have significant economic consequences, researchers said like lower GDP growth rates. Combined with a growing number of people entering retirement age, a smaller workforce poses hard fiscal challenges to public health and pension programs. In this regard, immigration could help, wrote the authors. World population growth to diminish, spurring geopolitical power shift.

The study mentions that countries that are able to manage to keep their working population through migration, like Canada, Australia and the USA, could prosper.

Estimates like these are, of course, limited to researchers current understanding of population indicators. They may not be able to tell the future, but they can shed some light on it.

Elon Musk Says He Took His Children to Watch the Common Folk Hoard Supplies in Panic – Futurism

Posted: at 3:50 pm

He's right, but he shouldn't say it.Let Them Have Toilet Paper

In the worlds best example of two wrongs dont make a right, Elon Musk says he took his kids to Walmart to watch the plebeians of the world panic-buy toilet paper.

Musk made a quip about customers springing to buy paper products during Teslas Q4 earnings call this week, in which he compared the the global chip shortage to the toilet paper shortages that hit during the early pandemic and still plague certain areas.

You know, there was a toilet paper shortage during COVID, and like, obviously, it wasnt really certainly a tremendous enhanced need for ass wiping, Musk said, according to a transcript of the call. Peoplegot every paper you could possibly wipe your ass with. I was like, Is this like a real thing or not? I actually took my kids to the H-E-B and Walmart in Texas. Indeed, it was.

Musk went on to mock people for stocking up on toilet paper, saying that if the end of the world was truly coming, it wasnt exactly the kind of thing that would help anyone survive.

Toilet paper is the least of your problems, Musk quipped.

Was Musk being being totally insensitive to all of us non-rich people who have to worry about the real consequences of a real pandemic?

Yes.

Is it pretty pointless to stock up on toilet paper?

Also yes.

But as mentioned, two wrongs dont make a right. Its true that according to WebMD, TP demand grew to $1.45 billion in sales in the 4-week period ending in March of 2020, up 112 percent from the year before. Its also true that if everyone bought just what they needed, there would be enough to go around and stores wouldnt have to limit how many packages a customer could buy.

Additionally, panic-buying only exacerbates supply chain shortages, and all that toilet paper is made from wood pulp, a resource we should trying to use less of, not more.

Grudgingly, yes, Musk is right but that doesnt mean he needs to sound so smug.

Warren Buffett would be richer than Elon Musk but gifted 50% of wealth – Markets Insider

Posted: at 3:50 pm

Warren Buffett would have seized Elon Musk's crown as the world's richest person this month, if the famed investor hadn't given half of his fortune to charity.

The Berkshire Hathaway CEO has a net worth of $113 billion, or just over half of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk's $220 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. If Buffett hadn't donated shares worth $111 billion over the past 16 years, he would be wealthier than Musk today.

Buffett owned nearly 475,000 Berkshire "A" shares in 2006, when he pledged to give 99% of his fortune to good causes. He has almost halved his holdings to about 239,000 shares since then, slashing the value of his Berkshire stake to $112 billion.

The investor's net worth has jumped by over $4 billion this year, as mounting fears of inflation and interest-rate hikes have fueled a 3% rise in Berkshire shares. In contrast, Musk's fortune has plunged by $50 billion this month, reflecting a painful sell-off of technology stocks that cut Tesla's share price by 29%.

Forbes estimates that Musk has given less than 1% of his wealth to charity, so his philanthropy hasn't materially eroded his net worth. However, Buffett's giving may have boosted Berkshire's stock price, meaning the investor's fortune might be smaller today without his largesse in recent years.

The Berkshire chief is the only one of the world's 10 wealthiest people whose net worth has grown this year. His centibillionaire peers have seen nearly $150 billion wiped off their combined fortunes in a matter of weeks.

Buffett's philanthropy has put a big dent in his wealth, costing him the title of the world's richest man. Yet his decades of careful investing continue to pay off, as investors are once again flocking to Berkshire for safety, and his collection of stocks and businesses are generating plenty of money for him to give away.

Read more:Warren Buffett is ready to deploy $80 billion if the market crashes this year. 7 experts say the investor should trim his Apple stake, acquire luxury brands, or buy some blue-chip stocks in the meantime.

FOX Business' Susan Li and Constellation Research CEO Ray Wang discuss Elon Musk being chosen as Time's 2021 Person of the Year and Apple set to become the first $3 trillion company.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk offered support to Canadian truckers protesting the federal governments vaccine mandate on Thursday in a series of tweets.

"Canadian truckers rule," Musk wrote to his nearly 72 million followers, adding "CB radios are free from govt/media control."

Later he added another tweet that said, "If you scare people enough, they will demand removal of freedom. This is the path to tyranny."

The unvaccinated are "taking a risk, but people do risky things all the time," he told Time. "I believe we've got to watch out for the erosion of freedom in America."

In the past, Musk had questioned the vaccine and downplayed the pandemic. He also defied Californias 2020 stay-at-home order to keep Tesla factories open, eventually opting to move to Texas.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates that roughly 15% of truckers in the country are not fully vaccinated, or about 16,000 truck drivers.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk had some choice words for President Joe Biden on Twitter.

On Thursday, Musk, CEO of electric car manufacturer Tesla, responded to a tweet from Biden in which the president listed General Motors and Ford as key players in the production of electric vehicles but excluded Tesla. The tweet features a video of Biden discussing EV manufacturing with GM CEO Mary Barra.

"I meant it when I said the future was going to be made right here in America. Companies like GM and Ford are building more electric vehicles here at home than ever before," Biden tweeted.

Musk responded by tweeting, "Starts with a T Ends with an A ESL in the middle."

Musk then retweeted a quote tweet from user Kim Paquette, who said, "Honestly how does he say this with a straight face. Shame on you President Biden for trying to cancel a great American company and rewrite EV history. No one is buying this. What an embarrassment for the United States," in response to Biden's tweet.

Musk responded, "Biden is treating the American public like fools."

Elon Musk says ‘fringe minority is actually the government’ in tweets about trucker protest – National Post

'Protesting in a Canadian winter shows real commitment!' he said in another tweet

Publishing date:

Elon Musk is still speaking out about an ongoing protest in Ottawa sparked by a convoy of truckers who drove across the country pushing for the removal of vaccine mandates.

The protest started over the weekend in Canadas capital and continuedon Monday , leading to gridlock, downtown bus service cancellations, bridge closures, even some violent disruptions and acts of vandalism.

On Sunday, Musk replied to a tweet showing a video of protesters in Ottawa.

It would appear that the so-called fringe minority is actually the government, he wrote.

It was followed by another tweet saying, If the government had the mandate of the people, there would be a significant counter-protest. There is not, therefore they do not.

Protesting in a Canadian winter shows real commitment! he later added.

It would appear that the so-called fringe minority is actually the government

Musk also tweeted a photo showing dozens of trucks lining a highway with the caption Taking a break from politics for a while. Heres a nice photo of trucks.

In another tweet on Sunday, likely in reference to the protest, Musk included a meme of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and wrote So many Hitlers! The meme is a photoshopped book cover with the title Everyone I dont like is Hitler.

Comedian Rob Schneider also continued to speak out about the protest. Like Musk, Schneider also posted his thoughts on social media over the weekend.

On Monday, Schneider quoted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had written a tweet in support of truckers at the start of the pandemic.

Schneider mockingly agreed wholeheartedly with Trudeau that truckers should be thanked for their hard work. He also posted a video showing trucks lining a highway, saying, For those of you who attempted to diminish the sheer size of Canadas Freedom Convoy, please enjoy this video.

I dont often agree with Justin Trudeau, but I concur wholeheartedly that it is the selfless hardworking truckers working day and night to make sure our shelves are stocked. So when you can #ThankATrucker for EVERYTHING theyre doing and help them however you can. pic.twitter.com/2dPt6ieT0W

Elon Musk space rocket on collision course with the Moon – Al Jazeera English

Posted: at 2:47 am

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell says the effects of the crash will be minor and it is possible similar impacts have taken place unnoticed.

A chunk of a SpaceX rocket that blasted off seven years ago and was abandoned in space after completing its mission will crash into the Moon in March, experts say.

The rocket was deployed in 2015 to put into orbit a NASA satellite called the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR).

Since then, the second stage of the rocket, or booster, has been floating in what mathematicians call a chaotic orbit, astronomer Bill Gray said on Wednesday.

It was Gray who calculated the space junks new collision course with the Moon. The booster passed quite close to the Moon in January in a rendezvous that altered its orbit, said Gray.

He is behind Project Pluto, software that allows scientists to calculate the trajectory of asteroids and other objects in space and is used in NASA-financed space observation programs.

A week after the rocket stage whizzed close to the Moon, Gray observed it again and concluded it would crash into the Moons dark side on March 4 at more than 9,000km/h (5,500 mph).

Gray appealed to the amateur astronomer community to join him in observing the booster, and his conclusion was confirmed.

The exact time and location of impact may change slightly from his forecast but there is widespread agreement that there will be a collision on the Moon that day.

Ive been tracking junk of this sort for about 15 years. And this is the first unintentional lunar impact that weve had, Gray said.

Astronomer Jonathan McDowell said, however, the effects of the collision will be minor, adding it is possible similar impacts have taken place unnoticed.

There are at least 50 objects that were left in deep Earth orbit in the 60s, 70s and 80s that were just abandoned there. We didnt track them, he said.

Now were picking up a couple of them but a lot of them were not finding and so theyre not there any more, he added. Probably at least a few of them hit the moon accidentally and we just didnt notice.

The impact of the chunk of SpaceX rocket, which weighs four tonnes, on the Moon will not be visible from Earth in realtime.

But it will leave a crater that scientists will be able to observe with spacecraft and satellites such as NASAs Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter or Indias Chandrayaan-2, and thus learn more about the geology of the Moon.

Spacecraft have been intentionally crashed into the Moon before for scientific purposes, such as during the Apollo missions to test seismometers.

In 2009, NASA sent a rocket stage hurling into the Moon near its south pole to look for water.

But most rockets do not go so far from Earth. SpaceX brings its rocket boosters back through the Earths atmosphere so they disintegrate over the ocean. The first stage is recovered and reused.

Gray said there could be more unintentional crashes into the Moon in the future as the US and Chinese space programmes, in particular, leave more junk in orbit.

The US, together with international partners, is already planning a space station to orbit the Moon.

McDowell noted these events start to be problematic when theres a lot more traffic.

Its actually no ones job to keep track of the junk that we leave out in deep earth orbit, he said. I think nows the time to start regulating it.

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Elon Musks company is currently developing a lunar lander that should allow NASA to send astronauts back to the Moon by 2025 at the earliest.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX plans for record year of launches at rate of one per week – CNBC

Posted: at 2:47 am

A Falcon 9 rocket launches the GPS III SV05 satellite on a mission for the U.S. Space Force on June 17, 2021.

SpaceX

Elon Musk's SpaceX broke its own annual orbital launch record last year, and it's looking to pick up the blistering pace further in 2022 to an average rate of one per week.

During a meeting of a key NASA agency oversight committee on Thursday, panel member Sandra Magnus revealed that the private company is targeting "an ambitious 52 launch manifest" for 2022.

"That's an incredible pace," Magnus, an astronaut and former executive director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, said during the meeting of NASA's Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP).

SpaceX successfully completed 31 launches in 2021, which beat its previous record of 26 launches in 2020. For context, SpaceX represented about a fifth of the world's successful orbital rocket launches last year with the company roughly keeping pace with China.

The company is already on a weekly average pace to begin the year, with three successful Falcon 9 launches so far and two more expected before the end of the month. In addition to its Falcon 9 launches, SpaceX also has several Falcon Heavy rockets scheduled for liftoff in 2022.

Magnus did not specify whether SpaceX's 52 scheduled launches include test flights of its Starship prototype rockets. Neither ASAP nor SpaceX responded to CNBC's requests for clarification.

A Falcon 9 rocket booster lands after launching the company's Transporter-2 rideshare mission on June 30, 2021.

SpaceX

A key piece of SpaceX's rapid launch rate has been its ability to partially reuse its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy vehicles, by landing its rocket boosters and recovering each half of the nosecone after launches.

In addition to cost savings the company's leadership has said reusing rockets can bring launches down to below $30 million each, from a typical $60 million to $90 million price tag SpaceX reuses rockets as a way to increase its launch rate without significantly increasing production. For example, the Falcon 9 booster that SpaceX launched the Transporter-3 mission with earlier this month was reused for a 10th time in under 20 months since its debut.

SpaceX's schedule of missions for 2022 includes multiple crewed spaceflight as well, including for NASA. Even as Magnus applauded the company for its pace, she also urged caution and safety.

"Both NASA and SpaceX will have to ensure the appropriate attention and priority are focused on NASA missions, and the right resources are brought to bear to maintain that pace at a safe measure," Magnus said.
