How Citizen Sleeper re-examines a genre and why Cyberpunk 2077 is dated – PCGamesN

Posted: September 24, 2021 at 10:34 am

Cyberpunk is a relatively new genre. Most will refer to William Gibsons 1984 novel, Neuromancer, as being a seminal work within cyberpunk, but its roots go back further to sci-fi authors of the 60s and 70s like Phillip K Dick, JG Ballard, and Alice B Sheldon (who wrote as James Tiptree Jr). Movie and videogame adaptations followed suit, cementing some of the key visual cues that we all recognise as cyberpunk today.

Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most famous example in videogames Gibson himself ended up commenting on the trailer, saying it strikes me as GTA skinned-over with a generic 80s retro-future.

There are, of course, countless other cyberpunk games going all the way back to Konamis Snatcher in 1988, and more still that are being made right now, like Citizen Sleeper. Its a narrative RPG set on a lawless interstellar space station at the edge of society, where you play as an escaped corporate-owned consciousness. We spoke to Gareth Damian Martin, the solo developer behind Citizen Sleeper, about what cyberpunk means in contemporary gaming.

Even in its origins, Martin says, cyberpunk was built on so many existing parts of new wave sci-fi, literary noir, and beat generation style it always feels wrong to chop it out of history and treat it like some unique strand of art and media.

At the same time, I think theres a contradiction here, because cyberpunk, when used as a descriptor within games, feels painfully reductive. This is because, as with many aesthetically striking styles, cyberpunk visuals have been cannibalised and reused so many times as to become an incredibly basic list of elements. A neon-lit, rainy megacity, techno-orientalism, implants, corporate control. We are all so familiar with these elements that we can recognise them instantly, and within moments the cyberpunk descriptor will be applied.

it always feels wrong to chop cyberpunk out of history and treat it like some unique strand of art

Gareth Damian Martin

Developer

In games in particular, Martin explains, because we are talking about a very aesthetic medium, cyberpunk manifests visually, and in particular draws extensively from Blade Runner just look at the recently announced Vigilance 2099.

I think it is very telling that Blade Runner is the major influence, because actually that film strips away most of the more philosophical and literary cyberpunk elements of Philip K. Dicks Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. He replaced them with some hokey gumshoe detective elements and a carefully honed aesthetic that smashed together film-noir moodiness and a new strand of orientalism and fascination with cities like Shanghai and Tokyo. This incredibly successful aesthetic, which owes a huge amount to the designer Syd Mead, eclipsed any themes the film might have had and cemented its place as an eternal sci-fi touchstone.

Its important to note that Martin isnt enamoured with the genre, nor do they necessarily want their game to be viewed as part of it. They do, however, appreciate the work of Gibson.

I see my work as being about hope, finding a place, a reason to go on

Gareth Damian Martin

Developer

When I was first working on Citizen Sleeper I was rereading William Gibsons Sprawl trilogy, Martin says. I started feeling that I wanted to make something that drew on so many of the things I liked about these books, without making something explicitly cyberpunk. Could I make something inspired by Gibson that didnt pay lip service to the genre he helped create? For me Gibsons books are filled with strong qualities: the razor-sharp and intimate prose, the focus on those on the edge of society, the terrifying power of capital, decaying megastructures that house burgeoning subcultures. I think all of these make Gibsons early work very relevant and exciting to read even now.

But Martin also believes there are plenty of unexplored ideasin the genre at large, which they hope to delve into in Citizen Sleeper. In Gibsons Sprawl books, hackers are more like mediums, who can contact the intangible forces that influence the physical world. I always found this to be a more exciting vision of cyberspace, and so in Citizen Sleeper I have also tried to engage with these ideas a little more, placing the player as a medium between the physical and intangible not as a hacker sat behind a computer, but a being that can, simply by closing their eyes, slip into a dream which sits behind the physical reality of their environment.

Because of this I think of Citizen Sleeper as being in communication with science fiction as a wider genre, Martin says, listing Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell as other key influences.Despite admiring Gibsons Sprawl trilogy, Martin has some reservations. From the vantage point of 2021, I think Gibsons remix of the hardboiled noir fiction in these books is successful, but it comes with a lot of conservative baggage that no longer feels relevant. For example, his interest in Japan as a rising power feels aligned with a burgeoning cocktail of fascination and xenophobia that was common in pop culture of the 1980s.

So what does Martin make of gamings most famous cyberpunk game?In reality, much of what is bad about Cyberpunk 2077 has little to do with the genre. CD Projekt Reds corporate practices, its eagerness to foster toxicity within its communities, the hype machine its all created this miasma around the genre which will take a long time to dispel.

Martin also feels that Cyberpunk 2077 is fairly unambitious. It carries forward most of its ideas from its source material, the TTRPG Cyberpunk 2020. Thatgame was a power-fantasy pastiche of cyberpunk imagery and ideas, which hasnt aged well, so 2077 is also a genre pastiche that feels incredibly dated and out of touch.

One of Martins main hopes for Citizen Sleeperis to challenge the pessimisticworldview that pervades thegenre. One of the accusations I always see levelled at cyberpunk or similarly dystopian sci-fi is that its supposed to be a warning, not a fantasy.Weremeant to read these works thinking, what a shitty place to live, I hope the world doesnt end up like this. To me this is nonsense. To talk about Gibson again, its clear he was writing about a world that he was fascinated and enticed by.

I have already seen my work being accused of being bleak, of seeing the future pessimistically. But actually I see my work as being about hope, about finding a place, a reason to go on, about the importance of forming communities and bonds.

Citizen Sleeper is set to release on PC in 2022. You can check out the Steam page here.

This Cyberpunk 2077 mod fixes one of the RPG’s most annoying features on controller – PCGamesN

Posted: at 10:34 am

I lovetaking toCyberpunk 2077s Night City on a controller, but theres one little, though pretty darn irritating, thing that can make the experience of my preferred playstyle that bit trickier. The default schemes key bindings, which arenteasily changed on a controller, have the stealth crouch and skip dialogue options assigned to the same button, which means I often accidentally miss important dialogue when trying to tackle a mission sneakily. But, a mod is here to help solve this.Preem.

Talwicks aptly named Stop Skipping Sentences When Sneaking Cyberpunk 2077 mod is simple in practice, but oh-so handy. It just switches the controller button for skipping dialogue (B if youre using an Xbox controller; circle if youre on a PlayStation one) tothe right-hand joystick press button the one usually used for quick attacks. The modder explains that this seemed the best choice, given youwouldnt use quick attacks until dialogue sequences were over.

While it doesnt totally iron out the chance of accidentally skipping some key dialogue, its an arguably more logical binding but the modder explains how you can change the skip dialogue control over to whichever other key you prefer if needed.

So, its a very simple mod, but a really useful one if, like me, youre always missing out on whatever Panam, Judy, Takemura, River, or well, everyone justhas to tell you right then while youre trying to infiltrate some warehouse on the down-low. Talwick says the mod was made for the latest build of the game, 1.3, but that it should work for any version.

If youre keen to grab the mod, do be sure to follow the modders instructions to get it running correctly and, as ever, mod with caution. You can find it at Nexus Mods here. If youre after more on Vs adventures in Night City, check out our Cyberpunk 2077 stealth,Cyberpunk 2077 quickhacking, andCyberpunk 2077 PC settingsguides at those links. If youre into action away from your PC, too, you can also check out a new Bladerunner tabletop RPG thats just been revealed.

Home Automation Terminal With Cyberpunk Style – Hackaday

Posted: at 10:34 am

The OLKB-Terminal designed by [Jeff Eberl] doesnt have a battery, cant fold up (even if it seems like it could), and is only portable in the sense that you can literally pick it up and move it somewhere else. So arguably its not really a cyberdeck per se, but it certainly does look the part. If you need to be furiously typing out lines of code in a dimly lit near-future hackers den, this should do you nicely.

[Jeff] has provided everything youd need to recreate this slick little machine on your own, though he does warn that some of the hardware decisions were based simply on what he had on-hand at the time, and that better or cheaper options may exist. So for example if you dont want to use the Raspberry Pi 4, you can easily swap it out for some other single-board computer. Though if you want to change something better integrated, like the LCD panel, it will probably require modifications to the 3D printed components.

The slim mechanical keyboard that [Jeff] used for the OLKB-Terminal, which in some ways set the tone for the whole design, is actually a completely separate open source project from [Victor Lucachi]. The VOID30 is a 3D printed, 30% handwired ortholinear keyboard that runs the popular QMK firmware on an Arduino Pro Micro. Hes implemented a couple tweaks, namely using a USB-C equipped Arduino clone, but otherwise its the same as upstream. So if youre not in the market for a little bedside cyberpunk terminal but love its sleek keyboard, youre in luck.

Software wise, [Jeff] has the OLKB-Terminal hooked into his larger Home Assistant system. This gives him an attractive status display of the whole network, and with just a tap on the terminals seven inch touch screen, hes able to directly control devices around the home. That said, at the end of the day its just a Raspberry Pi, so it could really run whatever you want.

While cyberdeck builds might be all the rage right now, we do appreciate projects that bring those same design tenets to the desktop. From the gorgeous faux-retro designs of [Oriol Ferrer Mesi] to modernized pieces of vintage hardware, truly personal computers that can be easily upgraded and repaired dont have to be limited to something you can lug around with a guitar strap.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch Makes Its Roads Wet Again – Kotaku

Posted: September 16, 2021 at 6:29 am

For a minute there, Cyberpunk 2077 wasnt wet enough. Today, it is, thanks to an update that restores missing water effects in the troubled open-world shooter.

Cyberpunk 2077 is locked in a tidal pattern. CD Projekt Red will roll out a patch, fix some stuff, and in the process, break some other stuff. Following the games big August update, rainwater failed to make surfaces to look wet. Todays update, patch 1.31, technically fixed that. In fact, surfaces are wetter than ever.

The 1.3 patch, which was the third major update for the infamously buggy game, brought numerous improvements, but it also drastically changed the water effects, specifically how surfaces looked before and after rain. Apparently, it was an issue with the ridiculously named Wet Surfaces System.

Todays update isnt just about making water more wet, though. It also purports to address a litany of smaller issues, including busted reload times and a miscalculated height for the games charged jump. Further, it fixes non-progression bugs in certain quests. Youll now be able to talk to the nomads and get things started in With A Little Help From My Friends. And Beat on the Brat wont suddenly restart.

Many are familiar with Cyberpunk 2077s troubled history by now. It launched in rough shape on last-gen consoles, which CDPR hid from reviewers by only allowing PC copies to go out ahead of release. This led to refund requests from dissatisfied players, and Sony pulled the game from the PlayStation store before re-adding it, albeit with a disclaimer about its rocky performance on PlayStation 4.

G/O Media may get a commission

Amid the turmoil, CDPR said it would drop several major patches for the game: one in January, another in February (it came out in March), and a third down the line. This ended up being the 1.3 patch that fans were waiting for through the spring and much of summer, only to laser-focus on the water effects. #Puddlegate all over again.

Cyberpunk 2077 Easter egg gives a small pat on the back to whoever finds it – GamesRadar+

Posted: at 6:29 am

A Cyberpunk 2077 player has discovered an Easter egg that praises whoever finds it.

Discovered by u/Feeltherush2132 on Reddit when exploring the Santo Domingo area in the game, the self-aware Easter egg is just a line of text which reads: "Well Done." Which were going to go ahead and assume means "well done for finding this" considering its tricky placement.

The Easter egg was apparently found using the 'flying katana glitch' in a secret area located in the Arasaka Industrial Park. At the top of a large Arasaka branded building, players will find two chests as well as the message of congratulations which appears as you walk closer to it. It is apparently also possible to find this Easter egg without the use of glitches; however, players' parkour skills need to be top-notch to do so.

Cyberpunk 2077 recently received a new update that overhauled many different aspects of the game. The 1.3 update - which went live last month - made changes such as improving frame rate issues, bug fixes, and other quality of life features like upgrading Cyberpunk 2077s minimap so that players are now able to see more and navigate the city better. Which has been a must-have for players pretty much as early as the games release.

Not only this, but Cyberpunk 2077 also got some free DLC recently - alongside the 1.3 update - in the form of a new skin for Keanu Reeves character Johnny Silverhand, some new jackets for playable character V, and a new car - an Archer Quartz "Bandit" to be precise.

Cant get enough of Night Citys hidden references? Take a look at our list of Cyberpunk 2077 Easter eggs.

Cyberpunk Shelby GT500KR and 429 Cobra Jet Mustang Have a Growling Widebody Meet – autoevolution

Posted: at 6:29 am

Ever since it was born for the 1964 and a half model year, the Ford Mustang has been a bottomless inspiration reservoir for Blue Oval aficionados, critics and the common folk alike. Naturally, in modern times, its also a muse for pixel masters.Take virtual artist Rostislav Prokop, aka rostislav_prokopon social media, for example. He casually likes to circle back to some of its virtual Ford Mustang creations whenever it seems fitting. And, just to warrant the added work time, he doesnt just play with one but instead opts to CGI-splash together a couple of its Mustang projects against the same backdrop.

Better yet, both are allowed to idle-growl at will because this time around we are dealing with a video rendering. Sure, theres much more work and CGI mastery involved with making these appear life-like, but we still appreciate the effort. Besides, the Mustang puppet master didnt just take a couple of its past creations and threw them side-by-side without looking back.

Instead, we can see a little bit of variation on past themes. As far as we can tell, the Mustang standing on the left side is a remastered variation in dark green of the recent Cyberpunk 2077-inspired take on the mighty 1968 Shelby Cobra GT500KR. The second one is a bit trickier to identify, although at the front it resembles the lines of his previous 71-73 Mustang Mach 1 incarnations.

Still, the CGI expert gives away its real identity in the description hashtags, so we know its a dark gray 429 Cobra Jet Shelby Mustang. Irrespective of their real-life personas, both have been copiously modified into CGI tuning wonders. The custom work includes restomod LED lights all over, massive widebody aerodynamic kits, as well as a bagged stance to support the menacing atmosphere.

As for whats tucked under the hood, thats anyones guess... Although, judging by the virtual soundtrack, we can only think of something thats V8, as old school as possible, and packed with lots of aftermarket enhancements.

Upcoming Cyberpunk Games To Keep An Eye On in Late 2021 and Beyond – Fiction Talk

Posted: at 6:29 am

The bright and vibrant worlds of the cyberpunk genre promise experiences that gamers really wont find elsewhere. Laden with futuristic tech, basked in the glow of ample neon and riddled with some truly fantastical imagery, cyberpunk games send us through wormholes of imagination into glowing metropolises, seedy undergrounds, and everything in between.

While there are some stellar cyberpunk games out there that everyone needs to dive into, the future holds anticipated titles that players will want to follow. Take your pick from the list below, and youre sure to find hours of entertainment, courtesy of the brightest minds in indie and AAA gaming.

Launching as one of a few must-play cyberpunk games of late 2021, Greylock Studios Severed Steel promises a multilayered first-person adventure set in a stylish, destructible world. Its hard not to notice just how sleek and clean Severed Steel looks, but all of that gets reduced to rubble once the bullets start flying.

With its bullet time mechanic, Severed Steel is lining up to be the game that all streamers will aim to master. Its a content goldmine once players understand how to best control protagonist Steel to string together combos and leave behind a wake of bodies. To complicate things, Steel isnt big on carrying ammo. Every weapon found is only as useful as its round capacity. Once its empty, its on to the next futuristic firearm.

Greylock Studio promises dynamic battles that never repeat thanks to the games unscripted, squad-based AI. This ensures every playthrough is unique and there is no simple going through the motions.

Severed Steel is releasing on Steam on September 17, 2021, and will land on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Nintendo Switch at a later date this year.

Its hard not to look at Vigilance 2099 and question whether its hoping to capitalize on the mistakes of Cyberpunk 2077. However, developer Envoidant Studios instead pulled inspiration from Blade Runner and the unreleased sequel to Prey (2006) to bring this story of bounty hunting in a neon world to computers (and possibly consoles).

There hasnt been much in the way of gameplay reveals, save for an eight-minute segment that showcased mechanics like combat, (aerial) driving, and even bounty hunting. Players control a fed-turned-bounty hunter with the know-how to hunt and take down the citys most nefarious criminals. Prey City is a living, breathing world full of AI characters and plenty of space to explore from the comfort of your flying car. Its the cyberpunk world our future was promised to be, realized in beautiful HD.

Vigilance 2099 can be played in third and first-person perspectives, allowing players to traverse the multi-leveled environment in the way most comfortable for them. And there is a lot to explore, whether youre scaling buildings or sticking to the crowded streets.

Vigilance 2099 currently has no official release date, but lead developer NasNakarus actively updates followers on the progress.

2022 should be a good year for cyberpunk games thanks to the planned launch of Replaced, a 2.5D retro experience set in a society that has seen better days. As R.E.A.C.H., an AI in a human body, players navigate Phoenix-City during an alternate version of the 1980s. Gone are the big hair bands and leg warmers. Here are the deadly outlaws and dangerous government corruption.

Replaced is the debut release of Sad Cat Studios, and the developer has been keeping things pretty close to the chest. While an official gameplay reveal hasnt happened yet beyond the initial teaser, Sad Cat noted that players would help guide R.E.A.C.H. on his quest to feel and be more human.

The minimal gameplay shown in the trailer shows R.E.A.C.H. traversing dangerous environments in platforming segments and bashing on bad guys with a stylized blend of melee and ranged combat. Its difficult to gauge whats player-controlled and whats scripted, but R.E.A.C.H. may have some slick moves at his disposal to help dispatch his foes.

Replaced is currently slated for a 2022 release date and will release on Steam, Epic Game Store, and Xbox Game Pass.

A name like Turbo Overkill promises a game thats over-the-top, full of insane action, and relentless. Digging deeper into Trigger Happy Interactives chaotic cyberpunk first-person shooter, its quite clear it will live up to its name.

Enter Paradise, a city overrun by augmented fiends. As Johnny Turbo, players have the skills and tools needed to return everything to normal. Or, at least as normal as Paradise gets. The announcement trailer was heavy on firearms, showcasing a bevy of different weapons that will aid Johnny on his quest. Most impressively is Johnnys chainsaw-leg, an augment that drives home just how ludicrous Turbo Overkill aims to be.

While the concept may read closer to the insanity of Doom or Serious Sam, the visual aesthetic is 100% cyberpunk. There is still plenty more to be seen from Turbo Overkill, which will hopefully confirm some vehicle segments that seem to be in the reveal trailer.

Trigger Happy Interactive currently has Turbo Overkill slated as releasing SOONTM. The game is expected to launch ambitiously on all current and prior-generation consoles, as well as Steam.

Return to the classic age of the PlayStation One with Samurai Unicorn, a game inspired by the visual style of early-era 3D gaming. That doesnt take away from the games beauty, especially since developer Its Got Stealth has created a cyberpunk world thats equal parts pixelated and visually appealing.

In Samurai Unicorn, players follow Klo and Unicorn as they go up against the Dream Eaters in the city of Sydney3. At the core of most cyberpunk games is a corrupt government and dystopian civilization, and both are heavily present in this third-person action-adventure.

Its Got Stealth promises an explorable world with interactive AI and cinematic storytelling that encourages curiosity. At least when youre not too busy engaged with the many different foes standing in your way. There is still much to learn about this stylized cyberpunk game, but the play on nostalgia absolutely drums up anticipation.

Samurai Unicorn doesnt have a release date but is likely launching in 2022.

The ideas behind cyberpunk games assure that players will constantly be treated to new and exciting futuristic releases. While these five represent a small fraction of whats on the horizon, theyre among the most promising titles well get our hands on soon.

Anyways, if youre looking for some gift cards to help with your gaming needs like Discord Nitro subscriptions or Steam Wallet Codes, just head over to the OffGamers site right here. Were pretty sure that youll need some help in anticipation of these upcoming cyberpunk games!
