Nearly two months ago, Princess Nokia spoke atBrown University about spirituality, and nearly a month later, all of social media began spreading her infectious vibesat least 40,000 times. On Tuesday (July 11), the Afro-Nuyorican took to her Instagram account to thank everyone for the positive affirmations and messages sent her way following the viral clip.

The 25-year-old recording artist also took the time to open up about her journey to the level of spirituality that she has reached thus far.

When I began my spiritual journey almost 6 years ago at 19 years old, I had much to learn about the mysteries of life, indigo phenomenon, clairvoyance, magic, the reclamation of afro diaspora, conscious evolution and vibrational oneness, the Metallic Butterfly artist began. It has been a wonderful, eye opening last few years of studying and co existing within the sacred realm of light. It has been a both painful and rewarding path that has tested my discipline, commitment, and health. It has tested my emotional, psychological, and spiritual well being. It wasnt always rainbows and sage bundles.

In the last month I have received a large amount of positive affirmations & messages in regard to the viral clip of my talk at Brown University regarding spirituality & magical identity. I have been overwhelmed by the amount of LOVE that has been received and communicated by SO many people, of all ages and worlds alike. I never imagined that my thoughts on spiritual solitude and evolving within the divine feminine and sacred living would be regarded so warmly. Thank you world, for acknowledging my intellect and beliefs, that are deep rooted in so much love and positivity. Spirituality is a general connection to the Divine and Sacred. It is a relationship and knowledge of higher cosmic learning. It is a pathway to higher consciousness, and vibrational living. It is a vital part of re healing this broken society and world, but healing ourselves as people. It is a part reshaping our concepts and perceptions of health, interaction, energy, and almost every facet of every day life. Have you ever wondered About what level of consciousness youre truly at?

Not in terms of it being a contest, or to say youre better/worse than other people, but as a kind of inner GPS that simply tells you where you are.

As humans, we tend to have very distorted and biased perspectives, especially when it comes to ourselves.

Its really easy to go on a yoga retreat and think youve transcended stress forever, or think youre enlightened after reading a few spiritual books.

This is why its crucial to have references that tell it like it is and objectively reflect where youre at.

I recently came across what can be described as a map of consciousness. Its a research paper by Justin Faerman entitled Mapping the Evolution of Consciousness: A Holistic Framework for Psychospiritual Development.

This paper describes, in plain English, eight stages of consciousness. And its not abstract or woo-woo. Its straightforward, simple to understand and backed by a lot of research.

Here are the stages outlined in the paper

Note: The first 2 stages are considered lower consciousness, while stages 3-8 are considered higher consciousness. This is not a judgment of being better or worse, but simply a means of classification.

Stage 1 is categorized by patterns of externalization and an overall victim mentality. The dominant emotions are fear, disdain and hopelessness. There is also a belief that life cannot be trusted.

In this stage, blame is placed on other individuals, society, government, nature, disease, etc. and other elements believed to be outside of ones conscious control and influence.

The motivating forces of stage 1 are safety and security.

Dominant Belief Structures: Life is not safe; I am not safe

Mantra for Evolution: God does not play dice with the universe. Albert Einstein

In this second stage, individuals realize that they have some degree of control. Yet this control is often motivated by fear and survival.

For example, war is an extension of this stage of consciousness. The enemy is perceived as a threat, and because of this, people believe they are morally justified to kill, eliminate or repress that enemy.

We also see various reflections of this stage of consciousness in our collective world. Look at how most people treat the environment and interpersonal relationships. Or consider the dominant mentality of politics and business.

This level of awareness is cut off from the following deeper understanding: Life is not a random series of events over which control must be exerted, but a deeper reflection of the internal psychodynamics of a persons own mind and consciousness.

Dominant Belief Structures: I must make it so; What I cannot control will destroy me.

Mantra for Evolution: If you bring forth what is within you, then that which is within you will be your salvation. If you do not bring forth what is within you, then that which is within you will destroy you. Gnostic Gospels

In this stage, the individual begins to understand the direct connection between their own perceptions, beliefs and emotional state and the conditions of their life, relationships, experiences and reality as a whole.

This level of consciousness is represented by a fundamental shift, from disempowerment to empowerment.

In order to fully complete this stage, an individual must undergo a deep transformational process that includes the purging of all perceptual distortions (limiting beliefs) and the healing/release of all emotional wounds and traumas. The emergence of consciousness into later stages is observed in direct proportion to the evolution of an individual through this process of deep inner healing and transformational work.

Dominant Belief Structures: I am in control; I am creative

In this stage, we see the evolution of the self into the beginnings of deep joy and peace.

As the resistance to perceived undesirable circumstances in life falls away and one begins to understand that there is an intelligent flow operating in every moment guiding the evolution of consciousness on both an individual and collective level through what could be dualistically termed positive and negative experiences.

The individual realizes here that even in great suffering, there is great wisdom and potential for expansion and evolution and that nothing is out of place, ever has been or ever will be.

Dominant Belief Structures: I am loved; I am supported

Useful Psycho-Spiritual Practices: Seeing everything as perfect, Surrender, Acceptance, Letting Go, Embracing Flow and Effortlessness, Meditation

Mantra For Evolution: Life will give you whatever experience is most helpful for the evolution of your consciousness. How do you know this is the experience you need? Because this is the experience you are having at the moment. Eckhart Tolle

At this stage of consciousness, the individual begins to understand and observe that the Universe is evolving itself through them.

The individual begins to realize that all perceived suffering or negative events are either: a) Created or called into their reality by aspects of their own consciousness in an effort to be resolved and transcended as part of their individual evolution and as part of the larger collective evolution or b) Exist due to their conscious or unconscious resistance to what is unfolding, which is essentially a resistance of oneself.

Individuals in stage 5 live more through their intuition, as intuition becomes clearer and clearer as one moves up the stages.

Dominant Belief Structures: I am safe; Everything is perfect

At this stage of awareness, the individual begins to understand that reality does not exist independent of consciousness, and therefore consciousness, or awareness if you prefer, is the causative factor of the universe and all that existsthat consciousness is creating all reality.

Individuals in this stage experience a profound sense of unity and oneness with everything.

When an individual fully enters and embodies this stage of awareness, their simple presence itself becomes a transformative experience for others. Individuals in this stage often become teachers or leaders, dedicate their lives to service of others or seek solitude to spend time in introspection, although they may also choose to live very normal and inconspicuous lives.

Dominant Belief Structures: I am one; I am whole

Useful Psycho-Spiritual Practices: Service, Contemplation, Meditation

Mantras For Evolution: You are an aperture through which the universe is looking at and exploring itself. Alan Watts

Stop acting so small. You are the Universe in ecstatic motion. Rumi

Individuals at this stage of growth begin to transcend the physicality within which we are proverbially trapped until we reach this point.

Here individuals begin to harness conscious control over this process by directing their awareness in such a way (through belief, emotion, thought, visualization, the manipulation of energy, intent, accessing transpersonal aspects of the self and likely other mechanisms not yet discovered) as to be able to make use of these higher order quantum-transpersonal abilities of the self.

Individuals at this stage perceive and know themselves to be limitless and are in various sub-stages of actualizing that reality beyond a simple intellectual understanding.

As individuals move more deeply into this stage they proportionally complete lower stages which leads to an embodied confidence, power and knowingness, which is palpable to most all who they come into contact with.

Dominant Belief Structures: I am infinite/limitless; Anything is possible

Useful Psycho-Spiritual Practices: Esoterics, Visualization, Kabbalah, Sound/Vibration/Mantra, Qi/Nei Gong, Kriya Yoga

Individuals at this stage tap into phenomena like:

Those who have near death experiences as well as users of psychedelic drugs or plant medicines (ayahuasca, DMT, LSD, mushrooms, etc.) are often able to have highly embodied first-hand experiences of this state of awareness pre-development into this stage, giving them a proverbial taste of this reality without necessarily having done the psychospiritual foundational work necessary to experience this stage organically and therefore they often lack a deeper understanding of the larger framework of what is happening along with the ability to maintain it beyond a transitory phenomenon, still nonetheless forever changed by the experience.

As an individual becomes more grounded in the later phases of stage eightwhich encompass this dimensional awarenessand simultaneously completes their evolution through lower stages, one would theoretically achieve complete enlightenment or non-dual self-realization.

Dominant Belief Structures: Everything is energy; I am awareness; Reality is an illusion

Although this model ends at stage 8, this doesnt imply that no further stages exist and that somehow stage 8 is the pinnacle of conscious evolution. However, any claims as to what happens beyond stage 8 at this time are simply conjecture.

At this point, you probably have a pretty good idea of where youre at.

When the descriptions are objectively laid out, it forces you to be honest with yourself.

Its also helpful to accept where youre at right now, while continuously learning and growing. Dont resist where you are right now or beat yourself up, neither of those serve your highest interest. Choose love, gratitude and compassion in each moment and you cant go wrong.

Heres another important point: youre not limited to one stage! Chances are that youre dipping into different stages on a daily basis. But it should be fairly apparent as to what stage youre grounded in at this point in your life.

For me, Im pretty grounded in stage 5, though I often fluctuate between stages 3 and 6. Ive tasted stages 7 and 8, yet these experiences have been few and fleeting. Sometimes Ill even find myself in stage 1 or 2, and thats okay. Its all a part of the human experience.

This framework is beautiful because it allows you to effectively calibrate where you are. It naturally creates self-awareness. Awareness is the first step toward any change, and transformative in and of itself.

Question: Coach Allana, my wife and I just signed divorce papers. Now, were getting along better than ever! Should we have gotten the divorce? Is it possible being free from each other is making us want each other more?

Answer: Isnt independence curious? We certainly dont want codependent relationships or to be controlled or dominated by anyone, yes? And yet once weve become solid on our own, solid independently, whats next in our conscious evolution is interdependent relationships where we each contribute to one another and the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

It sounds like in your marriage there wasnt a sense of freedom with in the partnership. Perhaps there werent spacious non judgmental conversations about what it would take for each of you to be thriving independently so you could come together interdependently.

Perhaps one or both of you gave away your time with your girlfriends or guyfriends. Perhaps once you began to live under the same roof, old limiting beliefs or negative programming or cellular memories or images imprinted into your mind flashed up to the surface triggering each other. Perhaps you didnt have the skills to move through challenges with success during the marriage, bringing you closer ever time. Perhaps you never learned about intimacy rituals or healthy communication patterns so that it was safe to be vulnerable and honest together.

And now that youre divorced and getting along better than ever making you want each other even more it seems were back to the core place that attracted you to one another. This is great but dont think just by getting back together everything will be fine! The old patterns have not been healed! The sabotaging mechanisms have not been healed! Its simply youve taken the foot off the gas and youre coasting in a bigger bubble of spaciousness But is soon as you get back into gear living under one roof, the issues will rise again. Promise. And perhaps worse given all youve been through with the divorce, too.

My recommendation would be to have a clear look at whats going on: youre attracted to one another and have the capacity to get along when theres a sense of freedom and honor and spaciousness. Marriage the old way didnt work. What WOULD it take for a relationship to work together? The next step would be to do the inner work and gain the communication skills so that you could thrive in a relationship again whether thats officially marriage or cohabitating.

I literally have one couple that I coach who unknowinglgy haphazardly blended two families with 6 teenagers together. As you an imagine it combusted into a legal separation with tremendous shame and judgment from family and friends. However during the separation period they found me. I worked with each of them separately and together while they lived separately. They actually realized they parented quite differently and each enjoyed their downtime away from each other substantially. Thus living a few blocks away from one another was perfect for now. Coming back together meant some forgiveness work, a new solid deal in place, new courageous communication rituals and a boat load of patience.

This past month their last child graduated from high school and is off to college. Theyve already put their house on the market and found a beautiful lake property to retire two together They are living beyond other peoples judgments of their non traditional marriage and theyre happier than ever.

Bottom line if they hadnt been willing to do the inner work and learn how to communicate effectively together, separation wouldve led to divorce. Yet because they were willing to sit in the fire and look inside and do the deep work that I take my clients through now they are happier than ever, kind of like high school kids to be honest! The sex is incredible, the communication is honest and theres a sense of vulnerability, safety and connection theyve never had before.

This month a British tabloid published a story about Akahi Ricardo and Camila Castillo, a self-styled "breatharian" couple who claimed they have "barely eaten for the last nine years" and are "sustained solely by the energy of the universe."

The couple spoke of how they "have survived on little else besides a piece of fruit or vegetable broth just 3 times per week" over the last decade. At one point, they claimed, they went three years without eating or drinking anything. Claiming "humans can easily be without foodas long as they are the connected to the energy that exists in all things and through breathing," the duo are portrayed as living only on light and air, whilepossessing an "understanding [of] cosmic nourishment (not just physical nourishment) and living without limits.

Castillo even claimed that she carried two children while staying breatharian, knowing her "son would be nourished enough by my love and this would allow him to grow healthily in my womb."

Like many outrageous medical woo stories, the Sun's tale was picked up by other tabloids, including the New York Post, and fringe alternative medicine websites, all of which re-printedRicardo and Castillo's claims without contrasting them with basic science.

If anyonehad checked, they'd quickly learn that the couple's claims defy everything we know about how both thermodynamics and the human body work. Their claims fall under the logical fallacy known as "special pleading," or asking for an unwarranted exception to established knowledge.

The couple's claim of going "three years" without eating or drinking violates every known principle of human nutrition and physiology. The maximum amount of time a person can go without water is aboutthree or four days, and aroundthree weekswithout food.

Unsurprisingly, Ricardo and Castillo aren't the first people to claim they live a "breatharian" lifestyle, subsisting only on the life-giving energy of the universe, as opposed to food and drink like the rest of us suckers.

In March, Broadly profiled two of what they described as "thousands" of breatharians who say they are sustained only be energy and occasional liquids.And a Ukrainian model gained a reputation as a "human Barbie doll" for her many plastic surgeries andoutlandish claim that she subsists only on "air and light" in her effort to become "the most perfect woman on the internet."

It's incredibly dangerous, these stories: multiple people have died from trying to live breatharian beliefs.A teacher inScotland, a mother of nine inAustralia, and another person in Switzerlandhave all died grizzly deaths from starvation while attempting to subsist on light and air.

Beatharianism comes with a grab bag of religious tenets, taking bits fromIndian mysticism, Hinduism, andBuddhism, and combining them with pseudoscientific concepts like sungazing (staring directly at the sun). It's a favorite of self-styled gurus who have gotten rich off people seeking mystical enlightenment, all of whom have failed to prove their claims.

The foremost practicitioner, an Australian woman who goes by "Jasmuheen," haswritten a slew of books about living off light, but has failed to demonstrate her abilities in several filmed attempts. Indeed, she was found to have a refrigerator full of food in her home.

Another guru, Wiley Brooks, calls himself the "founder of breatharianism." He sells breatharian workshops ad was interviewed on the Tom Snyder Show in 1981. He alsowas caught buying Twinkeesat a 7-11, and has concocted an elaborate mythology that allows him to eat cheeseburgers and Diet Coke while simultaneously living off air and light.

Yet another, an Indian mystic named Hira Ratan Manek, runs a "solar healing center" and claims to obtain all of his nutrition by staring at the sun. He was caught by a documentary crew eating at a restaurant in San Francisco.

It's here thatAkahi Ricardo and Camila Castillobear a second look, because they too are monetizing their fringe beliefs, which they may not actually believe.

Ricardo's website hawks books, DVDs, $1,000 tickets to week-long retreats, and video courses, all of which promise to "correct damaged DNA, generate and rejuvenate emotional, mental and physical well-being, regulate the oxygen intake in the body and align the nervous system in the best interest of the overall health of human body."

Likewise, Castillo has a website called "Pranic Woman" where she sells video courses and books about "conscious evolution" and "living on light." The only hint from either that none of this has the slightest evidence to support it is a brief disclaimer on Castillo's sitethat what she sells is "for information purposes only." Ricardo, however, claims his program is "scientifically proven."

After exposing the Sun's story as having originated with a British content company, CNN contacted the duo to follow up. Ricardo stood by all of his ridiculous claims, saying the exposure has led to "thousands" of people contacting him. He reiterated that "we all know the air is light. We all know there is energy in nature. So there's no way this can be dangerous."

The people who have died from breatharianism were unavailable for comment.

The push westward and the establishment of communities by white settlers supported militarily by the U.S. government resulted in the killing and forced evacuation of Native American nations. During this period, treaties were signed by the U.S. but broken to meet the needs and demands of the encroaching settlers.

To the editor: I am optimistic that the people of Utah will continue to evolve in the understanding of their shared history of Bears Ears National Monument. There is a sacred history in Utah that is not smeared with hate and should be valued beyond extraction of resources.

The word evolution means something slowly transforming itself into a higher possibility.

Charles Darwin told you that you were all monkeys, and then your tail fell away and you became humanyou know the story. When you were a monkey, you did not choose to become a man. Nature just pushed you on. When you are in animal nature, evolution anyway happensyou dont really have to participate in it. But once you become human, once a certain level of consciousness has come, there is no more unconscious evolution for you. Only if you consciously seek, it will happen.

If you look at it with the necessary awareness, you will see the very process of lifewhatever we refer to as the process of livingis a certain seeking, certain urge to include, evolve and grow into our ultimate nature. The very nature of the being is such that it wants to go to the ultimate dimensionwhatever that is.

This is a human predicament. This is not my invention. Nature is catering for a chimpanzee to become a human being. I am just catering to the human longing to evolve into something else. It is lifes idea that everything should evolve. We are just trying to serve that idea because if you dont serve the life process, you will only be crushed by it.

Nothing else will happen because it is too big a juggernaut. It is not something that you fight with; it is something that you go with. You dont know where it begins or where it ends, but its on. It is constantly longing to be something more than what it is right now.

It is the pulse of this juggernaut that Darwin feltthat everything is longing to go ahead. He tried to explain it in his own way, which became the theory of evolution, but essentially what he is telling you is if you look at the whole thingfrom a single-celled animal to yourselfas one large life process, it has constantly been striving for millions of years.

It has reached a point where you are floating on the surface. Now that you have reached such a point, if you have a working intelligence, I think you will use this capability to hasten this processyou dont want to just go at the pace of evolution that is happening in nature. A spiritual process is only talking about accelerating lifes desire. We are gassing up lifes desire to move on into a different possibility. To use a more biological term, you want to mutate. If you want to know liberation in this lifetime, you definitely need to mutate because evolution is a long process.

When you sit in a certain space or in the presence of a certain energy that seems to be a bigger possibility than what you are, that is the time to simply sit.

That is not the time to ask for something. If you simply sit, you will get the necessary nutrient to evolve very fast, to mutate from one dimension to another. Once you grow into a certain possibility, everything that is possible in that dimension will anyway happen to you. Meditating, going to the temple or sitting with a guru is not a time to ask, it is a time to imbibe and allow yourself to move into a higher possibility.
