Cloud Security Challenges in 2020 And How to Avoid Them – TechFunnel

Check Point and Cybersecurity Insiders have released their global 2020 Cloud Security Report, wherein the emphasis was placed on the cloud security challenges that business security systems face in the protection of data and workloads in their public cloud systems.
According to the report, 75% of respondents revealed that they were highly concerned about public cloud security as it continues to remain a big challenge for them.
One of the current cloud computing security issues and challenges affecting cloud security in 2020 is the problem of data breaches. The data breach has several consequences, some of which includes:
This is another of the most widespread cloud security challenges facing cloud technology in 2020. For example, a misconfigured AWS Simple Storage Service (S3) cloud storage bucket leaked accurate and sensitive data of about 123 million American families in 2017.
The dataset was owned by Experian, a credit bureau that engaged in the selling of the data to an online marketing and data analytics organization called Alteryx. The file was exposed by Alteryx. Such an incidence can have lethal consequences.
All over the world, several businesses are moving parts of their IT infrastructure to public clouds. A major issue with this migration is the incorporation of adequate security structures to tackle cyber threats.
The challenge however is that most businesses still find it almost impossible to implement this process. Datasets are vulnerable to several attacks when businesses make the assumption that cloud transition is a simple-to-execute task of just migrating their present IT system and security architecture to a cloud environment. Another contributing factor is also a lack of understanding of the shared security role model.
With cloud computing comes several changes to typical internal system management practices associated with identity and access management (IAM). Although these arent really new cloud security challenges, they are however more important challenges when working on a cloud-based environment.
This is because cloud computing has great effects on identity, credential, and access management. In both private and public cloud environments, there is a need for CSPs and cloud users to manage IAM without impairing security.
The hijacking of accounts is an issue characterized by the access to and abuse of accounts that contain extremely sensitive or private details, by malicious attackers. Usually, the accounts with the most threats in cloud environments are subscriptions or cloud service accounts.
These accounts are prone to compromise as a result of stolen credentials, exploiting cloud-based systems, and phishing attacks.
According to the 2018 Netwrix Cloud Security Report, 58% of organizations indicate insiders as the cause of security breaches. Thus, most security incidents are caused by insider negligence.
The report from the Ponemon Institutes 2018 Cost of Insider Threats study indicated that 13% of the reported insider incidents were caused by credential theft, 23% were associated with criminal insiders, and a whopping 64% was as a result of employee or contractor negligence.
Some of the cited common scenarios are: employees or other internal staff being victims of phishing emails that resulted in malicious attacks on business assets, employees saving private company data on their own poorly secure personal systems or devices, and cloud servers that have been configured inappropriately.
In order to enable consumers to manage and utilize cloud systems, cloud computing providers release a set of software user interfaces (UIs) and APIs. These APIs are the ones that determine how secure and available the overall cloud servers services will be.
From access management and authentication to activity control and encryption, it is necessary that these interfaces are designed for protection against both malicious and accidental attempts to infiltrate the security policy. The implications of insecure APIs can be the abuse or even worse the breach of a dataset.
A number of major data breaches have been caused by hacked, exposed, or broken APIs. In essence, it becomes imperative for companies to have an understanding of the security features that characterize the design and presentation of these interfaces on the internet.
The transition from the data platform to the cloud environment creates certain issues for the creation of adequate data storage and protection protocol. It is now important for the user to create fresh processes for duplicating, migrating, and storing data.
This process becomes even more complex if the user would be employing Multi-cloud. These problems should be solved by a control plane. This is because it provides the integrity and security that would complement the data plane which brings about stability and runtime of the data.
An inefficient control plane indicates that whoever is in charge either a DevOps engineer or a system architect does not have complete control over the verification, security, and logic of the data infrastructure.
In this kind of situation, major stakeholders are unaware of how data flows, the security configuration, and the positions/areas of structural weak points and blind spots. As a result of these challenges in cloud security, the company could experience data leakage, unavailability, or corruption.
Every now and then, cloud service providers reveal processes and security protocols that are needed in order to successfully integrate and safeguard their systems. In most cases, this information is disclosed via API calls and the protections are integrated into the CSPs metastructure.
The metastructure is regarded as the customer line/CSP of demarcation, also called the waterline. In this model, several levels are characterized by error possibilities. For instance, inappropriate API integration by the CSP makes it easier for attackers to hinder cloud customers through the interruption of integrity, confidentiality, of service availability.
Restricted cloud usage visibility is the outcome of the inability of a company to visualize and analyze the safety or maliciousness of the cloud service used within the organization. There are two major cloud security challenges in this concept.
The first is un-sanctioned app use. This happens when employees are making use of cloud tools and applications without the specific authorization of corporate IT and security. This, therefore, leads to a self-assistance model known as Shadow IT.
It is risky when insecure cloud services activity is not in accordance with corporate guidelines, especially when integrated with sensitive corporate data. This is because the locked-in vendor does not need to be in competition with other vendors. They are with your company since youre their only choice if you desire a functional service without starting all over from the scratch.
Thus, it is necessary that you ascertain how effective it would be to move from a particular service provider to another when choosing cloud-based services. It is pertinent that you consider certain factors before choosing a cloud computing service in order to avoid vendor lock-in (for either your cloud service itself or your security solutions). Consider these factors:
Awareness and adequate communication of security risks is an important aspect of network security, as well as cloud security. A thorough security solution must be able to alert the respective website or app managers immediately it perceives a security threat.
Without clear and prompt communication, the appropriate entities will not be able to quickly mitigate the threat and take proper steps that will minimize the threat.

Barriers to cloud uptake in Kenya
Adoption of cloud technology has accelerated in recent years, driven by better broadband connectivity and more affordable data. However, many private businesses and public institutions in East Africa are yet to fully embrace these services due to insufficient knowledge, public perception, confusing regulations, and cost and security concerns to name a few challenges.
Another barrier to the uptake of cloud technology is inadequate access to a reliable, high-speed Internet connection. Without one, cloud technology is redundant. We have seen an increase in Internet usage in Kenya, with 39.3 million Internet subscriptions recorded in 2019/2020, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya.
Awareness has to be created around what technology is available in Kenya and how people can go about harnessing it. This means that the risks associated with an Internet-driven world need to be addressed as well.
There has already been an increase in the uptake of cloud technology in Kenya over the last few years, with 35.6 per cent of public institutions and 22.9 per cent of private businesses using this technology in 2017/2018, according to the Communications Authority of Kenya. Given the time since these figures were released as well as recent global events we anticipate seeing a significant increase in the number of cloud computing users and in-demand for cloud technology in Kenya.
Enabling the cloud for a future-forward Kenya
If Kenya is to take advantage of the opportunities that the cloud can provide, businesses and government need to work together to create a more enabling, conducive cloud environment. Nurturing the development of a stable, reliable communications infrastructure network in Kenya is key to ensuring the continuous uptake of cloud technology. By providing infrastructure that is able to withstand the demands of an Internet-driven world, the Kenyan economy will be able to grow and develop into a thriving business hub.

Cloud Computing And Cybersecurity Need Better Oversight Now – Forbes

On Aug. 5, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) handed down a cease and desist order to Capital One for its failure to establish effective risk assessment and management processes before migrating its information technology operations to a cloud operating environment.
While we hear about data breaches on a nearly weekly basis, the Capital One incident is noteworthy because it involved the banks migration to cloud computingsomething that many banks are either in the process of doing, or will be doing in the near future.
The $80 million fine Capital One must pay to the US Treasury is pocket change for the bank.
The compliance actions the bank will be required to take will likely prove to be the bigger headache. The OCCs consent order requires Capital One to:
Its hard to believe, but bank executives concerns regarding cybersecurity are declining (that isnt a typo).
According to Cornerstone Advisors Whats Going On in Banking studies, nearly half of bank executives put cybersecurity on their list of top three concerns for 2018. That percentage declined to 36% in 2019 and dropped even further to 21% in 2020.

Whats going on here?
Operational integration is lulling banks into a false sense of (cyber) security.
Cybersecurity policy is becoming business as usual for banks. As a result, bank execs are more confident today than they were three years ago that cybersecurity policies are well-designed and being well-executed.
Its a false sense of security, however, because banks have yet to feel the cybersecurity impact of cloud computing.
Three data points highlight the growth of cloud computing in banking:
As cloud computing within banking grows, the prevalence of cyber breaches for cloud services is growing significantly as well. According to a Verizon study:
Cloud assets were involved in about 24% of breaches this year. Cloud breaches involved an email or web application server 73% of the time, and 77% involved breached credentials.
A new report from Cornerstone Advisors, commissioned by DefenseStorm, Cloud on the Horizon, identifies emerging cloud-related cybersecurity challenges facing banks including:
1) Over-reliance on providers. There is an over-reliance on providers to complete cybersecurity checklists from banks during due diligence. It would be pretty easy for them to dupe us, said one Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) interviewed for the report.
There is also over-reliance on just a few providers.
Richard Harmon, Managing Director at Cloudera, calls this cloud concentration risk and writes, the consolidation of multiple organizations within one cloud service provider (CSP) presents a more attractive target for cybercriminals.
2) Reporting problems. Bank CISOs have discovered incorrect completion of due diligence cybersecurity requests for third party risk management from the providers.
Transparency has become an issue, as well. CISOs stated a lack of willingness to show any of the providers security policies or audits.
One CISO mentioned that when his bank asked a provider for a SOC-2, the vendor produced Amazon Web Services SOC 2. When the CISO questioned the vendor as to whether it had its own SOC 2, the provider was unaware it even needed to do its own.
3) Technical limitations. Many cloud vendors have cybersecurity limitations. For example, they cannot IP-restrict or require multi-factor authentication for third parties. Configuration is a challenge, as well.
Its not just the vendors fault. According to Bill Glasby, Chief Technology Officer of Heritage Bank, one issue around cloud security is operators' inability to configure the tools. The problem is that its all home-brew today.
Banks migration to the cloud will necessitate changes to how they govern IT from three perspectives:
1) Contractual. Migrating to the cloud requires switching from traditional security testing to a contractual-based model for security testing. Banks cant move to the cloud without caring about and dealing with the contractual clauses with their service providers. In particular, banks should negotiate the reversibility clause with their cloud providers.
One problem, however, according to a CIO interviewed by Cornerstone, is that many cloud providers dont even know what should be written in a reversibility clause.
2) Organizational. Business departments and lines of business end-running IT and buying cloud solutions directly from cloud providers will become more prevalent with a migration to the cloud. IT will have to reinforce its IT governance policies and procedures in order to minimize the risks caused by the solutions implemented by the different business departments.
3) Strategic. Business departments want flexibility and innovation. However, migrating to cloud services typically involves a shift from highly customized to mostly-standardized services. This can cause friction between IT and the businessfriction that must be resolved with strategic clarity and direction.

Huawei promotes free webinar on AI and cloud computing – Somag News

Huawei will promote, from August 27, free digital seminars for both students and professionals in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing.
The first will address basic AI principles; AI in the 5G era; Atlas IA Computing Solution; Huawei Cloud; and ModelArts (Artificial Intelligence Platform in Cloud) segment for which a live demonstration is being prepared.
The class will start at 6:30 pm and will last for an hour and a half. There is also a time for participants to ask questions and ask questions with the speaker.
Filipe Testa is an IT Product Manager at Huawei, now in the Cloud & AI business unit, being responsible for the IT portfolio (Computing x86, ARM, AI Storage Private & Public Cloud). Testa has been with the company since 2017 (with an interval of one year at Vivo) first as an engineer and technical leader, responsible for the architecture and implementation of IT / ICT solutions.
This should be the first in a series of seminars that Huawei intends to do the schedule, not yet completely defined, provides for at least one class per month, always addressing issues related to Artificial Intelligence and Cloud Computing.
It is the first time that Huawei holds a seminar in this format in Brazil but, if it depends on the publics response, the initiative is here to stay: there are already 500 registered participants. As a result, an offline channel for questions will be opened after the class is over.

The research was conducted by IDC, saysSalesforce and its ecosystem could create 37,500 jobs in New Zealand among partners and customers over the same period.

IDC predicts that cloud computing will account for 16.4% of all technology spending in New Zealand by 2024.
The report found that local industry growth will mean up until 2024, Salesforce and its ecosystem are expected to enable the creation of 37,500 direct jobs in New Zealand amongst Salesforce customers.
The COVID-19 pandemic has meant more things need to be done digitally as customers shift more of their activity online and employees do more of their work from home," says Craig Skinner, managing director at Salesforce New Zealand.
"Companies need to be equipped with the cloud tools that let teams collaborate from anywhere, sell from anywhere and service customers from anywhere. he says.
The Salesforce Economy in New Zealand: 37,500 Jobs, $2.3 Billion in New Business Revenue from 2018 to 2024 report found that up until 2024, Salesforce and its ecosystem are expected to enable the creation of 37,500 direct jobs among Salesforce customers in the country.
Over the same period, the use of cloud computing by Salesforce customers will add a net US$2.3 billion in new business revenue to the local economy.
Because organisations that spend on cloud computing subscriptions also spend on ancillary products and services, the Salesforce ecosystem in New Zealand in 2019 was 4.5 times larger than Salesforce itself. By 2024, it will be 6.6x as big.
The Salesforce Economic Impact Model is an extension to IDC's IT Economic Impact Model. It estimates Salesforce's current and future share of the benefits to the general economy generated by cloud computing, and it also estimates the size of the ecosystem supporting Salesforce using IDC's market research on the ratio of spending on professional services to cloud subscriptions; the ratio of sales of hardware, software, and networking to spending on public and private cloud computing; and the ratio of spending on application development tools to applications developed.
