The COVID-19 outbreak has speeded up the growth of Internet traffic. The number of websites is rising rapidly, and there are more eCommerce businesses than ever. Therefore, the shared web hosting companies are doing a roaring trade. But unfortunately, these are not the only numbers that are growing. Cyberattacks are also on the rise, and no business is safe nowadays. By now, cybercrime is one of the most frequently reported economic crimes in the organizations, making cybersecurity a C-suite and board-level concern.

Today we will talk about how to detect and remove obfuscated malware from shared web hosting servers.

The obfuscation technique is for hiding the real purpose of a program. The hacker creates a code that is not readable by humans, but the functionality behind it remains the same. So, when you run the program, it will behave like the encapsulated program it was designed for.

There are two different types of analysis when we talk about malware: static and dynamic.

The static analysis includes hash algorithms, string matching, code-based detection, and there is a new, patent-pending technique invented by George Egri (Co-founder and CEO of BitNinja), the source code structure analysis.

This creates a special structure-based signature from the source code and then does the matching on the structure. This way, no matter how the source is altered, the structure will be the same. It is very similar to how plagiarism checker systems work.

But jump back to the types of analyses. Besides the static analysis, there is the dynamic analysis. When using the dynamic analysis, you run the source code partially or entirely and observe the programs behavior.

One of the behavior analysis methods is deobfuscation. If you find the obfuscation mechanism, you can deobfuscate the code. After that, you can decapsulate the real program and match the deobfuscated source code. But believe me, there are too many different obfuscation techniques. So, its not that easy to deobfuscate the code, and there are other aspects that are hard to analyze without partially running the code.

Another technique is from the output when you analyze the output of the program. Most of the time, when you run malware, you can find traces of malicious behavior from the output.

Within the confines of the Function Calls analysis, you run the code, and you find which functions are used for malicious activities.

The next one is variable content analysis. This program contains something phishy, as you can see in the picture. Its always suspicious when a source code includes function names like explode and basic commands used to decode interesting variable names.

It can happen with real files or within a simulated environment to safely analyze file manipulations.

Finally, you can do multi-path execution when you analyze what would happen if you forced the interpreter into a code branch. This way, you can find locked code parts, and this technique is also quite helpful in discovering malicious behaviors.

Sandboxing is one way to use these techniques if you have a couple of special servers for that purpose.

These servers can spin up virtual servers, and you upload the PHP file to it, run the code and do the above-mentioned analyzing methods. The disadvantage of this technique is that it takes around 20 seconds to analyze one PHP file. Analyzing all of your PHP files would take a lot of time and eat up too many resources.

Cloud vs in-house disaster recovery – Times of Malta

More and more companies of all sizes are moving to the cloud, but why is it time to also move disaster recovery systems to the cloud?

Partnering with a provider that meets their disaster-recovery (DR) needs will allow organisations to protect themselves from threats such as system failures and focus on growing their business rather than addressing unknown risk factors. One of the benefits of using disaster recovery as a service is that one does not have to invest money and resources in owning and maintaining a disaster recovery environment on the ground. It may be tempting to implement every step of a disaster rescue plan in-house, but smaller companies that lack a dedicated IT team may find it easier to use a third-party solution.

Cloud computing is cheap because of its economy of scale, and outsourced tasks usually gives one exactly what they need. The plot thickens for companies that use software as a service (SaaS) provider, which in turn relies on third-party cloud providers to host their services.

There are also several smaller, lesser-known players who focus much of their efforts on providing high-quality disaster recovery services (DRaaS), but there is a shortage of them. A single point disaster can weaken ones business, and a backup and logging service is extremely important if one needs to perform disaster recovery after a failure and see where something went wrong.

DRAAS can be a great option for small- and medium-sized enterprises that lack the expertise to test an effective disaster and recovery plan. Proper management of the location and nature of the backups, as well as the availability of backup data, can cause a single point of failure or disaster that can weaken the company.

A disaster can also affect a wide geographical area, which means that backups can be affected even if they are in the same region as the main office.

If one wants to use the cloud for DR/business continuity (BC) planning, there are some problems they need to face. For disaster recovery, this means how critical business applications behave in a cloud environment. If one relies on cloud disaster and recovery software, they also need to examine the specifics of what they are buying. These tests not only help to know whether the disaster recovery plan is working but can also help in gaining insight into problems that can occur during a disaster.

It is a misconception that one does not have to worry about resilience and recovery when one deploys their workloads in the cloud. While such services exist, there is certainly much more to consider before an organisation can be considered safe. It is important to note that while cloud providers have certain responsibilities, companies and cloud customers are responsible for planning an effective disaster recovery strategy. One probably has a plan to protect their company data, employees and businesses. Management will feel safer knowing that one knows the risks and has adapted their disaster and recovery plan accordingly.

This is one of the main reasons why an emergency rescue plan is needed for both cloud services and in-house services, as well as cloud providers and cloud customers. Other problems that could put a business in a bad situation if it is not prepared include lack of access to critical infrastructure and other critical resources such as backup and recovery equipment, and other issues.

Basically, the nature of the cloud makes it less secure than traditional options, and there needs to be more preparation to ensure security on the software platform and infrastructure level to ensure security. While the cloud provides excellent disaster-recovery capabilities, it is not a cheap alternative to the in-house approach. If ones environment is already in the cloud, it may be useful to use a cloud provider as an option to restore data. One can work with their cloud disaster recovery partner to implement the design and set up the disaster recovery infrastructure. Cloud DR partners have access to a wide range of resources, including data centres, cloud servers, storage and network infrastructure, and disaster management tools.

While backing up important data is an integral part of a companys IT strategy, backing up is not the same as having an emergency plan. The last thing one wants to find out is that their backups failed at a time when they lost their data. That is why it is critical for cloud providers to define exactly what their policies are when it comes to the backup process and the disaster recovery.

Citi currently has a buy rating and $21.00 price target on Goodmans shares.

Macquarie Telecom is a provider of telco and hosting services to corporate and government customers. It is the companys hosting business that is expected to be the key driver of growth for the company over the coming years. In fact, you only need to look at its half year results to see this. For the six months ended 31 December, Macquarie Telecom delivered a 15% increase in EBITDA to $36.4 million. This was driven largely by a 23% increase in hosting EBITDA to $27.3 million. Last month Canaccord Genuity put a buy rating and $68.00 price target on its shares.

Another way to gain exposure to the cloud is with Megaport. It offers scalable bandwidth for public and private cloud connections, metro ethernet, and data centre backhaul. Megaport has networking equipment in hundreds of data centres around the world, which has created a software layer that provides an easy way for users to create and manage network connections. This means that through the Megaport network, users can create and run a global network with or without the need for physical infrastructure. Goldman Sachs currently has a buy rating and $15.55 price target on its shares.

Another company that has been benefiting greatly from the cloud computing boom is NextDC. Thanks to the ever-increasing amount of data being generated by consumers and businesses, demand for capacity in its data centres has been going through the roof. Positively, this week Goldman Sachs has been speaking to industry participants and found that demand remains very strong. In light of this, the broker has added its shares to its conviction buy list and lifted the price target on them to $15.00.

Cloud computing firm DigitalOcean aims for nearly $5 billion valuation in U.S. IPO – WTVB News

(Reuters) - DigitalOcean Holdings Inc is aiming for a valuation of nearly $5 billion in its U.S. initial public offering (IPO), the cloud services firm said on Monday, as the shift to work from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic accelerates the switch to cloud-based computing.

The company is looking to raise as much as $775.5 million through an offering of 16.5 million shares, priced between $44 and $47 apiece, according to a regulatory filing.

DigitalOcean provides its cloud platform and tools to developers, startups and small- and medium-sized businesses and has over 570,000 customers in more than 185 countries.

The company operates in a sector dominated by larger rivals including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Corp, Oracle Corp and IBM Corp.

DigitalOcean's IPO underscores unprecedented investor appetite for technology companies, which have seen demand skyrocket during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The company will list its stock on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "DOCN".

Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan are the lead underwriters for the offering.

As it Turns 15, the AWS Cloud Now Stores 100 Trillion Objects – Data Center Frontier

One of our core theses at Data Center Frontier is that the world is being transformed by data, and that the infrastructure that manages all this data becomes more mission-critical to our society by the day.

This theme is constantly reinforced by the growth we see all around us, including larger data centers, bigger campuses and eye-popping data on the volume of leasing and construction.

Sometimes we see data points affirm the extraordinary nature of this shift to digital business platforms. But every now and again someone in the industry shares a data point that just blows your mind. That was the case yesterday, as a blog post from Amazons Jeff Barr noted the 15th anniversary of the launch of Amazon Web Services, which kicked off the era of cloud computing. Jeffs post included a mind-blowing data point.

Today I am happy to announce that S3 now stores over 100 trillion (1014, or 100,000,000,000,000) objects, and regularly peaks at tens of millions of requests per second, Barr wrote. Thats almost 13,000 objects for each person in the world, or 50 objects for every one of the roughly two trillion galaxies in the Universe.

How does a service got from zero to 100 trillion in 15 years? One day at a time. No one is using less data today than they were yesterday. Tomorrow, we will all use more data, as technology continues to create new capabilities, and shifts others from physical to virtual.

Why do cloud bills keep spiking every month? How much is marketing spending on cloud services? How much is HR investing in online recruiting tools? Is anyone still using some database instances? Who knows?

Over the past year, organizations have been pushing forward, full steam, into cloud computing. However, questions still persist as to how much is being wasted.

The latest analysis coming out of Flexera'sState of the Cloud report, based on the experiences of 750 executives, finds that while a great deal of money is being spent in the cloud, accounting where it all goes can still be somewhat of a mystery.

Most companies spend more than a million dollars a year on cloud services, yet they struggle to handle their growing cloud spend. On average, survey respondents estimate 30% of cloud spend is wasted. Flexera actually puts that figure, based on its work with customers, at 35%. Adding to the challenge is the fact that organizations are not taking advantage of all cloud provider discounting -- though adoption is growing. Just over half (52 percent) of AWS users leverage reserved instances and only 46% of Azure users do so. But organizations seem to be moving quickly to adopt the AWS Savings Plan (44% in 2021 vs 30% in 2020), a new offering in 2020 that simplifies discounting.

Companies are also starting to rely on automation to keep cloud costs in check. Users are leveraging automated policies to shut down workloads after hours (49%) and rightsize instances (48%). Just over half, 55%, report that understanding cost implications of software licenses is a top cloud challenge.

Thirty-six percent of enterprises said their annual spend exceeded $12 million and 83 percent reported that cloud spend exceeds $1.2 million per year. These figures represent an increase over last year, when 20 percent of enterprises reported an annual spend of more than $12 million and 74% reported yearly spend of more than $1.2 million.

Ninety-seven percent of respondents utilize at least one public cloud, while 80 percent have at least one private cloud. Seventy-eight percent of respondents are using hybrid cloud. Multi-cloud also continues to gain traction, and is the dominant strategy, adopted by nearly all surveyed enterprises. The most common multi-cloud approach among enterprises is a mix of multiple public and multiple private clouds. Private cloud adoption also is strong. VMware vSphere continues to lead in private cloud (36% currently use). Microsoft Azure Stack usage is at 35%; AWS Outpost and OpenStack each have 28%.

While organizations are using multiple clouds, this doesn't necessarily mean individual applications are spanning clouds, the survey's authors also report. The survey finds apps siloed on different clouds is the most common multi-cloud implementation, with 49 percent of respondents saying they use it. Data integration is the most common type of architecture that spans clouds. However, more than one-third of respondents are using more advanced architectures, such as workload mobility between clouds and individual apps that span public and private clouds.

Multi-Cloud Architectures Used

Use of public cloud PaaS services is increasing. Data warehouse has the highest adoption, used by 54%, while 28% of enterprises are experimenting with artificial intelligence and machine learning -- more than any other PaaS services.

Top challenges are security, spend, governance and expertise. Overall, 81% indicate that security is a challenge, followed by 79% for managing cloud spend and 75% each for governance, lack of resources/expertise and compliance.
