Published on November 23, 2021
Chief information officers, chief technology officers and technology leaders globally surveyed on key technology trends, priorities and predictions for 2022 and beyond
IEEE, the worlds largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today released the results of The Impact of Technology in 2022 and Beyond: an IEEE Global Study, a new survey of global technology leaders from the U.S., U.K., China, India and Brazil. The study, which included 350 chief technology officers, chief information officers and IT directors, covers the most important technologies in 2022, industries most impacted by technology in the year ahead, and technology trends through the next decade.
The most important technologies, innovation, sustainability and the future
Which technologies will be the most important in 2022? Among total respondents, more than one in five (21%) say AI and machine learning, cloud computing (20%) and 5G (17%) will be the most important technologies next year. Because of the global pandemic, technology leaders surveyed said in 2021 they accelerated adoption of cloud computing (60%), AI and machine learning (51%), and 5G (46%), among others.
Its not surprising, therefore, that 95% agree including 66% who strongly agree that AI will drive the majority of innovation across nearly every industry sector in the next 1-5 years.
When asked which of the following areas 5G will most benefit in the next year, technology leaders surveyed said:
telemedicine, including remote surgery and health record transmissions (24%)
remote learning and education (20%)
personal and professional day-to-day communications (15%)
entertainment, sports and live event streaming (14%)
manufacturing and assembly (13%)
transportation and traffic control (7%)
carbon footprint reduction and energy efficiency (5%)
farming and agriculture (2%)
As for industry sectors most impacted by technology in 2022, technology leaders surveyed cited manufacturing (25%), financial services (19%), healthcare (16%) and energy (13%). As compared to the beginning of 2021, 92% of respondents agree, including 60% who strongly agree, that implementing smart building technologies that benefit sustainability, decarbonization and energy savings has become a top priority for their organization.
Workplace technologies, Human Resources collaboration and COVID-19
As the impact of COVID-19 varies globally and hybrid work continues, technology leaders nearly universally agree (97% agree, including 69% who strongly agree) their team is working more closely than ever before with Human Resources leaders to implement workplace technologies and apps for office check-in, space usage data and analytics, COVID and health protocols, employee productivity, engagement and mental health.
Among challenges technology leaders see in 2022, maintaining strong cybersecurity for a hybrid workforce of remote and in-office workers is viewed by those surveyed as challenging by 83% of respondents (40% very, 43% somewhat) while managing return-to-office health and safety protocols, software, apps and data is seen as challenging by 73% of those surveyed (29% very, 44% somewhat). Determining what technologies are needed for their company in the post-pandemic future is anticipated to be challenging for 68% of technology leaders (29% very, 39% somewhat). Recruiting technologists and filling open tech positions in the year ahead is also seen as challenging by 73% of respondents.
Robots rise over the next decade
Looking ahead, 81% agree that in the next five years, one quarter of what they do will be enhanced by robots, and 77% agree that in the same time frame, robots will be deployed across their organization to enhance nearly every business function from sales and human resources to marketing and IT. A majority of respondents agree (78%) that in the next 10 years, half or more of what they do will be enhanced by robots. As for the deployments of robots that will most benefit humanity, according to the survey, those are manufacturing and assembly (33%), hospital and patient care (26%) and earth and space exploration (13%).
Connected devices continue to proliferate
As a result of the shift to hybrid work and the pandemic, more than half (51%) of technology leaders surveyed believe the number of devices connected to their businesses that they need to track and manage such as smartphones, tablets, sensors, robots, vehicles, drones, etc. increased as much as 1.5 times, while for 42% of those surveyed the number of devices increased in excess of 1.5 times.
However, the perspectives of technology leaders globally diverge when asked about managing even more connected devices in 2022. When asked if the number of devices connected to their companys business will grow so significantly and rapidly in 2022 that it will be unmanageable, over half of technology leaders disagree (51%), but 49% agree. Those differences can also be seen across regions 78% in India, 64% in Brazil and 63% in the U.S. agree device growth will be unmanageable, while a strong majority in China (87%) and just over half (52%) in the U.K disagree.
Cyber and physical security, preparedness and deployment of technologies
The cybersecurity concerns most likely to be in technology leaders top two are issues related to the mobile and hybrid workforce including employees using their own devices (39%) and cloud vulnerability (35%). Additional concerns include data center vulnerability (27%), a coordinated attack on their network (26%) and a ransomware attack (25%). Notably, 59% of all technology leaders surveyed currently use or in the next five years plan to use drones for security, surveillance or threat prevention as part of their business model. There are regional disparities though. Current drone use for security or plans to do so in the next five years are strongest in Brazil (78%), China (71%), India (60%) and the U.S. (52%) compared to only (32%) in the U.K. where 48% of respondents say they have no plans to use drones in their business.
An open-source distributed database that uses cryptography through a distributed ledger, blockchain enables trust among individuals and third parties. The four uses in the next year respondents were most likely to cite in their own top three most important uses for blockchain technology are:
Secure machine to machine interaction in the Internet of Things (IoT) (61%)
Shipment tracing and contactless digital transactions(51%)
Keeping health and medical records secure in the cloud (47%)
Securing connecting parties within a specified ecosystem (47%)
The vast majority of those surveyed (92%) believe that compared to a year ago, their company is better prepared to respond to a potentially catastrophic interruption such as a data breach or natural disaster. Of that majority, 65% strongly agree that COVID-19 accelerated their preparedness.

Internet of Things (IoT) Cloud Trends 2021 – Datamation
Posted: at 4:04 pm
Exploring Internet of Things (IoT) cloud trends provides valuable insight into the extent to which organizations and consumers have embraced both of these technologies.
As Mordor Intelligence reports, the IoT market was valued at $1.1 trillion in 2020 and is expected to grow to $6 trillion by 2026, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 32% between 2021 and 2026. These numbers come as no surprise when we consider that recent Microsoft research revealed that around 94% of companies would use some variety of IoT by the end of 2021.
Cloud adoption, in general, has been on the rise as well. Gartner forecasts end-user spending on cloud services to reach nearly $400 billion by the end of 2021 and $482 billion by the end of 2022. Further, the research firm predicts, public cloud spending will grow to more than 45% of all enterprise IT spending up from less than 17% in 2021.
While there are many factors at play affecting the adoption of both cloud and IoT technology, the link between the two is apparent. In order to derive value from the data being collected from IoT devices, increased access to fast, reliable connection speeds is a must. The cloud offers expanded reach, reduced latency over direct remote network connections, and increasingly, IoT-based services provided by third parties.
This article will take a look at some of the key trends shaping the IoT cloud landscape:
According to a Markets & Markets study, the global as-a-service market (XaaS) was forecasted to grow at nearly 40% each year between 2016 and 2020. IoT as a service is a relatively new idea that builds on the framework of other as-a-service models.
IoT employs wireless microcontroller (MCU) devices to extract operational data, which is transported to the cloud, where any number of services can be managed. In other words, the rise in cloud computing makes it possible for IoT insights to be derived in real-time, from anywhere.
Companies like Samsara rely on the cloud to provide their clients with real-time visibility into production facility operations, GPS fleet tracking, equipment monitoring, and more by monitoring and reporting on IoT-derived data.
As organizations add IoT devices to their networks, bad actors are waiting to pounce on the vulnerabilities these new endpoints can expose. An emerging trend is for security teams to focus on encryption of data in the cloud ensuring that data is encoded when it is at rest and in transit is vital.
Several vendors offer features in this space:
Tech research firm Omdia reports that 124 million 5G connections were added globally between Q1 and Q2 2021, a 41% increase. By the end of 2021, the firm predicts, there will be 692 million global 5G connections. Increased IoT usage is one factor driving this growth. As organizations adopt IoT services accessible through the cloud, fast connection speeds are a must. 5G is also helping to bridge the connectivity gap in remote locations, allowing new industries to enhance their operations with IoT.
Similar to the trend we see with 5G adoption, organizations are increasingly turning to edge computing to handle IoT data due to the promise of increased connection speed and reliability especially those related to big data analytics. IoT devices retrieve massive volumes of data, but without big data processing capabilities, organizations miss out on the many benefits of data analytics.
Edge computing provides a distributed network model that can work alongside cloud data depositories to reduce latency in data processing speeds. Industry watchers expect edge computing to continue expanding as organizations and consumers alike increasingly adopt IoT technologies.
Cloud computing has been a boon to the field of artificial intelligence (AI), providing public access to powerful machine learning (ML) platforms that require huge processing power and data bandwidth. For example, machine learning is being used to learn from IoT-gathered data to automate operational processes and streamline supply chains. These use cases are the tip of the IoT cloud iceberg as cloud resources have evolved, virtually any AI application can be accessed and used through the cloud, greatly enhancing the usability of IoT-generated data, often in real-time.

What is the smart city, and why is cloud storage key? – TechRadar
Posted: at 4:04 pm
Today, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) have become big business. Throughout the 2020s, Harvard Business Review[1] estimates that these technologies will add $13 trillion to the global economy, impacting virtually every sector in the process.
One of the biggest drivers of the value-add provided by AI/ML will come from smart cities: cities that leverage enhancements in such technologies to deliver improved services for citizens. Smart cities promise to provide data-driven decisions for essential public services like sanitation, transportation, and communications. In this way, they can help improve the quality of life for both the general public and public sector employees, while also reducing environmental footprints and providing more efficient and more cost-effective public services.
Whether it be improved traffic flow, better waste collection practices, video surveillance, or maintenance schedules for infrastructure - the smart city represents a cleaner, safer, and more affordable future for our urban centers. But realizing these benefits will require us to redefine our approach towards networking, data storage, and the systems underpinning and connecting both. To capitalize on the smart city paradigm, well need to adopt a new and dynamic approach to computing and storage.
In practice, the smart city will require the use of vast arrays of interconnected devices, whether it be sensors, networked vehicles, and machinery for service delivery. These will all generate an ever-growing quantity and variety of data that must be processed and stored, and made accessible to the rest of the smart citys network for both ongoing tasks and city-wide analytics. While a smart city may not need access to all the relevant data at once, theres always the possibility of historic data needing to be accessed on recall to help train and calibrate ML models or perform detailed analytics.
All of this means that a more traditional system architecture that processes data through a central enterprise data center - whether it be on-premise or cloud - cant meet the scaling or performance requirements of the smart city.
This is because, given its geographic removal from the places where data is generated and used, a centralized store cant be counted on to provide the rapid and reliable service thats needed for smart city analytics or delivery. Ultimately, the smart city will demand a decentralized approach to data storage. Such a decentralized approach will enable data from devices, sensors, and applications that serve the smart city to be analyzed and processed locally before being transferred to an enterprise data center or the cloud, reducing latency and response times.
To achieve the cost-effectiveness needed when operating at the scale of data variety and volume expected of a smart city, theyll need access to bottomless clouds: storage arrangements where prices per terabyte are so low that development and IT teams wont need to worry about the costs of provisioning for smart city infrastructure. This gives teams the ability to store all the data they need without the stress of draining their budget, or having to arbitrarily reduce the data pool theyll be able to draw from for smart city applications or analytics.
Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) is based around a simple principle: users should only pay for the resources they actually use. When it comes to computing and storage resources, this is going to be essential to economically deliver on the vision of the smart city, given the ever-expanding need for provisioning while also keeping down costs within the public sector.
For the smart city in particular, IaaS offers managed, on-demand, and secure edge computing and storage services. IaaS will furnish cities with the components needed to deliver on their vision - whether it be storage, virtualization environments, or network structures. Through being able to scale up provisioning based on current demand while also removing the procurement and administrative burden of handling the actual hardware to a specialist third party, smart cities can benefit from economies of scale that have underpinned much of the cloud computing revolution over the past decade.
In fact, IaaS may be the only way to go, when it comes to ensuring that the data of the smart city is stored and delivered in a reliable way. While handling infrastructure in-house may be tempting from a security perspective, market competition between IaaS providers incentivizes better service provision from all angles, whether customer experience, reliability and redundancy, or the latest standards in security.
The worlds top cities are already transforming to keep up with ever-expanding populations, and in turn their ever-expanding needs. Before we know it, various sectors of urban life will have to be connected through intelligent technology to optimize the use of shared resources - not because we want to, but because we need to.
Whether it be a question of social justice, fiscal prudence, or environmental conscience, intelligently allocating and using the resources of the city is the big question facing our urban centers in this century. But the smart city can only be delivered through a smart approach to data handling and storage. Optimizing a citys cloud infrastructure and guaranteeing cost-effective and quality provisioning through IaaS will be essential to delivering on the promise of the smart city, and thus meet some of our time most pressing challenges.

Cloud solutions are becoming more and more popular amongst companies. While cloud computing is certainly not a brand new concept, the adoption of cloud solutions may seem to be growing substantially at times, especially when you factor in cloud computings biggest competitors desktop virtualization and managed services.
When cloud solutions are mentioned by an IT company, typically there are cloud services, cloud platforms and cloud infrastructure that are being discussed. There are aspects of cloud solutions that make them incredibly valuable to businesses as well as some concerns that companies need to be aware of so they can select the cloud solution that works best for them.
One aspect of cloud solutions is computing power and flexibility . Businesses need to ensure that IT infrastructure is capable of supporting the companys needs. Cloud solutions make businesses more flexible with cloud services and cloud platforms because cloud computing enables companies to pay per use, allowing for exponential flexibility as a business demands change over time.
A second aspect of cloud solutions is reduced costs. One major drawback of traditional on-site server technology is the cost, not only to acquire but also to maintain. The cloud provides a much more flexible and affordable option.
A cloud solution is only as good as the cloud service or cloud platform its based on, so make sure you can trust your cloud provider. Cloud providers are expected to always have their client best interests in mind, hence cloud computings rapid growth in a cloud service market valued at $191.82 billion in 2016. Another aspect of cloud providers to consider is cloud diversity, which refers to cloud services and cloud platforms. There are some cloud providers who support a limited number of cloud services and cloud platforms, while others offer a wide range of options that can be difficult to sort through. It is important to know that cloud diversity isnt necessarily a bad thing, but it is something you should consider when deciding on a cloud solution for your business.
Cloud computing can be extremely beneficial to businesses of all sizes and industries, but the key aspect of cloud computing providers is trust. If youre considering cloud solutions, its important you know what cloud services and cloud platforms are available, as well as how the cloud service market is expected to grow. The cloud computing industry is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 30% through 2021, which means we should expect cloud solutions to become even more prevalent in businesses and homes alike.
As you can see cloud solutions are one of the biggest things in IT right now, its important that if you are to discuss cloud solutions with your business that you consider cloud diversity, cloud service market growth, and cloud solution providers.

A preview of the AWS re:Invent 2021 agenda – TechTarget
Posted: at 9:33 pm
It's that time of year again for cloud computing professionals: AWS re:Invent is nearly here.
The conference, being held in Las Vegas from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, will offer both in-person and virtual options. Here's a breakdown of what's new this year, the different session types and how attendees can get the most out of this experience.
In 2020, re:Invent followed a fully remote format. Rather than the typical weeklong conference, the virtual show was held over a few weeks. And, while the virtual model did make the event accessible to a broad range of attendees, the networking opportunities were not as expansive as they were in prior years.
With the 2021 event offering an in-person option again, popular social gatherings can resume. These include the Midnight Madness pep rally, the re:Play party and other "quirky" events that will be announced as the conference nears.
One thing that will be different this year is the added health measures. All badge-holders at re:Invent are required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. All attendees must also wear masks. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the space.
The agenda for re:Invent 2021 reverts to the familiar in-person format from 2019. It includes keynotes, leadership sessions and breakout events, as well as certifications and labs.
The first keynote is the Global Partner Summit on Monday, Nov. 29. Doug Yeum, head of AWS Partner Organization; Sandy Carter, vice president of Worldwide Public Sector Partners and Programs; and Stephen Orban, general manager of AWS Marketplace and Control Services will talk about current partner opportunities in the cloud computing market.
On Tuesday, Nov. 30, AWS CEO Adam Selipsky will address AWS product and service news.
On Wednesday, Dec. 1, Swami Sivasubramanian, vice president of Amazon Machine Learning, will reveal AWS' latest database, analytics and machine learning technologies. In a second keynote later in the day, Peter DeSantis, senior vice president of Utility Computing and Apps, will share how AWS optimizes its cloud infrastructure.
Amazon.com CTO Werner Vogels is the last keynote speaker of the conference. On Thursday, Dec. 2, he will take the stage to delve into the technical details of AWS. Vogels is also expected to share his thoughts on resilient architectures and emerging software development trends.
These sessions are given by AWS executives and explore recent product developments and roadmaps. They cover various subjects, including storage, cloud operations, containers and IoT.
In these one-hour sessions, AWS experts, users and partners will cover a range of cloud computing topics. There are more than 1,200 sessions to choose from, spanning over 50 tracks. Sessions are available for new, intermediate and advanced AWS users.
At the end of sessions, attendees typically have a chance to ask questions. In some cases, multiple sessions may happen the in the same room, and headsets enable attendees to listen to multiple presentations. For virtual attendees, recordings of breakout sessions will be available on demand beginning a week after re:Invent.
For those who want a more hands-on experience, there are workshops that run for two hours. Attendees collaborate in small groups to work through different scenarios. Bring your laptop!
Chalk talks typically have small audiences and are more interactive than breakouts. AWS will conduct hundreds of these sessions, in which a main speaker and additional experts lead a technical discussion and whiteboarding sessions related to real-world IT challenges.
These sessions host up to six attendees, who sit down with an AWS expert to work in real time on a specific technical project.
Stay tuned for further updates as AWS releases more agenda information.
