In fact, Christopher Nolan explains this in his film, The Prestige where he breaks a trick down into three parts; the pledge, the turn and the prestige.

The key here is that the prestige is a moment whereby an audiencesexpectations are transformed the unimaginable happens. This is a concept thatstretches far beyond the realms of magic and into our everyday lives. Forexample, in the world of cloud computing the prestige helps to explain tocompanies the limitless potential of the cloud. This means moving beyond theobvious; reduced costs, less overhead and focusing on the benefits the cloudcan have for a business when leveraged correctly.

Consider a cloud solution that uses machine learning to identifyanomalies, optimise backup, storage and cost. Based on file extension, age ofdata, and time since last used, the solution makes recommendations about filesthat could be deleted, highlighting potential reductions in the cloudbill.

Furthermore, recovery efficiency is another benefit of cloud solutions.Gone are the days of manually sifting through all backups to find the file inquestion. SAP strikes three-year cloud computing deal with Microsoft – City A.M.

Software company SAP said today it had agreed a three-year deal with Microsoft to help its large business customers move business processes into the cloud.

The partnership, called Embrace, aims to help clients run operations hosted at remote servers supported by SAPs S/4HANA database.

We bundled SAPs cloud platform services to support customers around the extension, integration and orchestration of SAP systems, co-chief executive Jennifer Morgan told reporters.

Morgan was appointed as co-chief executive of the company alongside Christian Klein after long-time chief executive Bill McDermott stepped down earlier this month.

Morgan is the first woman to become a chief executive of a company in Germanys blue-chip Dax index.

Bringing together the power of SAP and Microsoft provides customers with the assurance of working with two industry leaders so they can confidently and efficiently transition into intelligent enterprises, Morgan said.

Gartner: 10 infrastructure trends you need to know – Network World

ORLANDO Corporate network infrastructure is only going to get more involved over the next two to three years as automation, network challenges and hybrid cloud become more integral to the enterprise.

Those were some of the main infrastructure trend themes espoused by Gartner vice president and distinguished analyst David Cappuccio at the research firms IT Symposium/XPO here this week.

Cappuccio noted that Gartners look at the top infrastructure and operational trends reflect offshoots of technologies such as cloud computing, automation and networking advances the companys analysts have talked about many times before.

Gartners Top Ten Trends Impacting Infrastructure and Operations list is:

Automation has been going on at some level for years, Cappuccio said, but the level of complexity as it is developed and deployed further is whats becoming confusing. The amounts and types of automation need to be managed and require a shift to a team development approach led by an automation architect that can be standardized across business units. Cappuccio said. What would help? Gartner says by 2025, more than 90 percent of enterprises will have an automation architect, up from less than 20 percent today.

Hybrid IT which includes a mix of data center, SAAS, PAAS, branch offices, edge computing and security services makes it hard to promise enterprise resources will be available or backed-up, Cappuccio said. Overly-simplistic IT disaster recovery plans may only deliver partial success. By 2021, the root cause of 90 percent of cloud-based availability issues will be the failure to fully use cloud service provider native redundancy capabilities, he said. Enterprises need to leverage their automation investments and other IT tools to refocus how systems are recovered.

ITs role in many companies has almost become that of a product manager for all its different DevOps teams. IT needs to build consistency across the enterprise because they dont want islands of DeVOps teams across the company. By 2023, 90 percent of enterprises will fail to scale DevOps initiatives if shared self-service platform approaches are not adopted, Gartner stated.

By 2022, more than 50 percent of enterprise-generated data will be created and processed outside the data center or cloud, up from less than 10 percent in 2019. Infrastructure is everywhere, Cappuccio said and every time data is moved it creates challenges. How does IT manage data-everywhere scenarios? Cappuccio advocated mandating data-driven infrastructure impact-assessment at early stages of design, investing in infrastructure tools to manage data wherever it resides, and modernizing existing backup architectures to be able to protect data wherever it resides.

The issue here is that most IoT implementations are not driven by IT, and they typically involve different protocols and vendors that dont usually deal with an IT organization. In the end, who controls and manages IoT becomes an issue and it creates security and operational risks. Cappuccio said companies need to engage with business leaders to shape IoT strategies and establish a center of excellence for IoT.

The methods of putting cloud services or cloud-like services on-premises but letting a vendor manage that cloud are increasing. Google has Athos and AWS will soon roll out OutPosts, for example, so this environment is going to change a lot in the next two years, Cappuccio said. This is a nascent market so customers should beware. Enterprises should also be prepared to set boundaries and determine who is responsible for software upgrades, patching and performance.

Humans used to learn about and adapt to technology. Today, technology learns and adapts to humans, Cappuccio said. We have created a world where customers have a serious expectation of perfection. We have designed applications where perfection is the norm. Such systems are great for mindshare, marketshare and corporate reputation, but as soon as theres one glitch thats all out the window.

Application development is no longer the realm of specialists. There has been the rollout of simpler development tools like low code or no code packages and a focus on bringing new applications to market quickly. That may bring a quicker time-to-market for the business but could be riskier for IT, Cappuccio said. IT leaders perhaps cant control such rapid development, but it needs to understand whats happening.

There are tons of emerging trends around networking such as mesh, secure-access service edge, network automation, network-on-demand service, network automation, and firewalls as a service. After decades of focusing on network performance and availability, future network innovation will target operational simplicity, automation, reliability and flexible business models, Cappuccio said. Enterprises need to automate everywhere and balance what technologies are safe vs. what is agile, he said.

The general idea here is that CIOs face the challenge of selecting the right mixture of cloud and traditional IT for the organization. The mix of many different elements such as edge, hybrid cloud, workflow and management creates complex infrastructures. Gartner recommends a focus on workflow visualization utilizing an in integrated toolset and developing a center of excellence to work on the issues, Cappuccio said.

Amazon set to be next big U.S. defense contractor critics urge for ‘effective oversight’ – Big Think

In 2007, Amazon and the U.S. engaged in virtually zero collaboration, and the company even fought a government subpoena for customer information related to a fraud case. But now, Amazon could soon become one of the government's largest defense contractors, an unprecedented move that raises questions about the changing relationship between government and big tech.

Tech companies have spent years competing for the U.S. Department of Defense's Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) contract, a cloud-computing deal reportedly worth $10 billion. The winner would be tasked with centralizing military information and providing access to cloud-computing services for various projects. For the massive deal, the government is seeking a single contractor, a decision that's prompted no shortage of controversy.

"Single award is advantageous because, among other things, it improves security, improves data accessibility and simplifies the Department's ability to adopt and use cloud services," DOD spokesperson Heather Babb told TechCrunch.

Google dropped out of the running last year, and though Microsoft remains in the running, critics have said the contract appears "gift-wrapped" for Amazon, which already has a $600 million deal with the Central Intelligence Agency. In August, the Pentagon ordered a review of the award process after President Donald Trump said the deal appears to be rigged in favor of Amazon, whose Amazon Web Services is the largest cloud-computing provider in the world.

"It's a very big contract," said President Donald Trump in August. "One of the biggest ever given having to do with the cloud and having to do with a lot of other things. And we're getting tremendous, really, complaints from other companies, and from great companies. Some of the greatest companies in the world are complaining about it."

Besides favoritism, what are some of the concerns about the world's largest retailer assuming such a powerful role over the nation's most sensitive data?

One concern is Amazon's outlook on privacy, informed by how the company markets its facial recognition technology. Amazon has developed facial recognition technology that's already being used in some U.S. police departments. Stephen E. Arnold, a specialist in intelligence and law enforcement software, told MIT Technology Review that he thinks Amazon's push into local law enforcement is just the start of a larger strategy.

"Amazon wants to become the preferred vendor for federal, state, county, and local government when police and intelligence solutions are required," Arnold said, adding that he predicts Amazon will then move on to international markets.

Amazon said in a statement:

"We feel strongly that the defense, intelligence, and national security communities deserve access to the best technology in the world. And we are committed to supporting their critical missions of protecting our citizens and defending our country."

It's worth noting that, compared to other Silicon Valley companies, Amazon seems relatively unconcerned about the potential problems associated with facial recognition technology, choosing to move forward with government collaboration while other companies have held back.

But perhaps the biggest consequences of the JEDI contract are the one that remain unpredictable.

"We seem to be racing toward a new configuration of government and industry without having fully thought through all of the implications. And some of those implications may not be entirely foreseeable," Steve Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy at the Federation of American Scientists, told MIT Technology Review. "But any time you establish a new concentration of power and influence, you also need to create some countervailing structure that will have the authority and the ability to perform effective oversight. Up to now, that oversight structure doesn't seem to [be] getting the attention it deserves."

Cloud computing the most important technology for treasurers, survey finds – The Paypers

New survey has revealed cloud computing will be the most important technology for treasurers over the next five years, followed by big data analytics and artificial intelligence.

According to the latest Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey,44% of respondents to the EIU survey indicate that cloud computing will be the most important technology for treasurers over the next five years, followed by big data analytics (42%) and artificial intelligence (37%). Interestingly, despite the attention it attracts robotic process automation (RPA) was cited by only 9% of respondents: treasurers say it facilitates automation more than data analysis.

The EIUs report, A Quantum Leap: Building a data-driven treasury, supported by Deutsche Bank, is based on a survey of 300 senior corporate treasury executives from around the world, identifying what being a data-driven treasury means and key considerations when developing a data strategy.

Big data analytics are highlighted as the second most important technology for treasurers. When applied to high volume transactions, such as payments data, these analytics can deliver insights not just for treasury but for other parts of the business too.

Treasurers say the primary benefits to becoming more data-driven are higher operational efficiency (39%) and improved return on investments/assets (36%). Data intelligence can also help treasurers to navigate increasingly complex regulation, such as the International Financial Reporting Standards 9 and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). However, four in 10 treasurers express significant concerns about the quality of data they are working with.

Yet for all the myriad useful security tools that the leading cloud providers offer, which are typically configured right more than the match for on-premises systems, typically the security and maintenance of the data being stored or processed in the cloud is still the sole responsibility of the firms it belongs to, and errors start with misconfigurations.

Many of the major data breaches involving cloud computing that have hit the headlines in recent years, stem from poorly misconfigured web applications and cloud storage buckets.McAfee claim that 99 percent of IaaS misconfigurations go unnoticed by IT professionals and one culprit is a highly automated infrastructure that automates misconfigurations along with all the rest, resulting in vulnerable systems.

As with broader security best practice, asset discovery is the starting point. He notes:They have to be added on deliberately, which can be easily missed. Spotting those problems, prioritising them, and keeping up to date with cloud best practices can be a massive struggle if you dont know what assets you have running in the cloud.

Rapid cloud migrations can also introduce legacy vulnerabilities into your cloud infrastructure from the very beginning, some experts warn.Ezat Dayeh, senior systems engineer at Cohesity notes that: Moving data to the cloud has exposed the issues organisations have with data management and data fragmentation.

Poor data management leaves vulnerabilities that can be exposed and exploited by cyber attackers. This could be by way of incorrect file permissions gifting access to attackers hijacking users, malware, or insecure APIs. Wider threats like denial of service and data loss through physical damage to hardware along with human-error issues such as deleting files and directories or leaving databases exposed are still possible in the cloud.

When it comes to the security risks of cloud computing organisations and firms themselves are still one of the biggest risk factors.

Enterprises need to intrinsically understand their own on-premises cloud infrastructure as well as any public or private clouds they are storing data on.Companies operating in Europe are learning that the data protection commissioners will not pull any punches when it comes to GDPR infringements, as is evidenced by recent GDPR rulings which included hefty proposed fines against Marriott and British Airways.

Gary Marsden, senior director of data protection services at Thales informed us that: Data governance knowing what your data is and where its located is a good first step towards securing data in the cloud, but businesses should take this further and retain full control and sovereignty over this data.
