Toronto man spends US$80,000 to clone his dead dog | Lifestyle … – CTV News

After his beloved dog died, a Toronto man spared no expense to have Woofie cloned.

When Woofie, a 20-year-old dingo shepherd cross, passed away last August, Matthew Johnson told CTV Toronto that he was devastated.

I would compare it secondary to losing my mother, he said.

Not wanting to say goodbye to his canine best friend, Johnson contacted an American company to clone Woofie.

The procedure wasnt cheap.

The cloning cost US$80,000 but for Johnson, it was worth every penny. He told CTV Toronto that he would recommend it to any dog owner who doesnt want to part with their pet.

If you have the money do it, he said. If you love your dog and your dog meant that much to you its definitely worth it.

The company managed to create two genetic replicates of his dog; one named Blondie and one named Woofie Jr.

Johnson met the clone dogs a few days ago and said the first encounter with the puppies was surreal.

Like holy **** thats Woofie! he said. The mole, the colouring, [] they have the exact same markings. The only way we can tell them apart is that Blondies a little heavier.

According to Johnson the dogs temperaments are also similar to the original Woofie.

You can tell this one stays close to me. I know theyre both Woofie but I think this one was the first one and pretty much their temperaments are the same, he said.

Both dogs are healthy and happy and, according to the company that cloned the dogs, they should both live as long as the original pup.

Chinese brands are cloning Xiaomi’s Mi Mix en masse – Gearburn – gearburn

Posted: at 3:34 pm

By Hadlee Simons on 9 May, 2017

Xiaomis Mi Mix is responsible for reigniting the high screen/body ratio trendsweeping the smartphone world. Featuring ever-so-tiny bezels and some innovative hardware solutions, Xiaomis handset is more proof that Chinese brands have been hitting it out of the park.

However, the design has been unabashedly cloned by at least three Chinese manufacturers in the past few months, starting with Doogee, as we reportedrecently.

Doogees take has tiny bezels on three sides of the full HD AMOLED screen, as well as a prominent chin much like the Mi Mix. Youve also got a not-quite-top-end Helio P25 octacore chip, 4GB/6GB RAM, 64GB/128GB storage, a 3380mAh battery and a 16MP/8MP camera pairing on the back.

The latter apes Huaweis camera setup, with one being a traditional camera and the other being a black and white shooter. Theres also a front-facing camera on the chin, much like Xiaomis effort, which was seemingly inspired in turn by the Nokia N9.

Then theres the UMIDIGI Crystal, with the nascent brand fresh from offering what they call an $80 iPhone 7. The Crystal opts for the Mi Mix stylings as well, but the company has the sense to not call it the UMIDIGI Mix, unlike Doogee.

Nevertheless, the Crystal apes the Mi Mixs tiny bezels on three sides, but prominent chin design. The company even has the front-facing camera in a similar spot, on the chin.

Otherwise, specs are still up in the air for this device, with UMIDIGI currently running polls on its website to determine some of the final details. But the phone will seemingly be available in polycarbonate (Lumia) and metal. Otherwise, UMIDIGI is also promising a variant with a Snapdragon 835 chip, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The latest phoneto jump on the Mi Mix train, the Bluboo S1 very inspired, to say the least. Take a look at the phone and youll notice a very similar (if not outright identical) wallpaper to the Xiaomi handset. Bluboo triedto slim down the bezels on three sides, but youve still got noticeable black borders.

According to Notebook Italia, the Bluboo S1 packs a mid-range yet capable Helio P20 chip, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage and a 5.5-inch full HD screen. Other notable specs include a chin-mounted 5MP selfie shooter, 13MP+2MP main camera pairing and a 3500mAh battery.

ARK Survival Evolved update launching today with TEK Cloning … – Express.co.uk

Posted: May 6, 2017 at 3:41 am

STUDIO WILDCARD

The new ARK Survival Evolved update will arrive on PC at around 7pm BST, however, it should be noted that these kind of patches can be pushed back.

ARK v257 has already seen several delays, mainly down to its impressive scope.

The latest changes include a bunch of new TEK gear to play around with, including the Cloning Chamber.

Other items include a new Megalodon Saddle that applies lasers to your mount, as well as a deadly Tek Grenade and four new creatures which will likely prove a handful to deal with.

One of the biggest tweaks to the game comes in the form of volcanos becoming active, this has led to many tribes having to move away from mountains that are set to go active very soon.

In the next PC update, the volcano will be receiving an active remodelling which will consume anything in the vicinity, Studio Wildcard warned last month.

A client-side patch pushed out earlier today now includes these borders in your game so you can see the affected area. You are HIGHLY recommended to move out of the area before the v257 patch goes live.

The new game patch will also provide over 20 new music tracks that are both per-biome and situational, an earlier release added additional sounds to several new existing dinos in the game.

The new ARK Survival Evolved update will arrive on PS4 and Xbox One at a later date.

Studio Wildcard have yet to provide a release schedule, however, the end of May seems like the earliest we can expect a deployment.

You can find the new ARK Survival Evolved patch notes for v257 below. It should be noted that more in-depth notes will be released later today.

Cloning in Lightroom? You don’t need to leave Lightroom to get a … – imaging resource

Lightroom expert Scott Kelby has an awesome website called Lightroom Killer Tips where he regularly publishes Lightroom tutorials. His latest video shows you that you don't need to go into Photoshop to clone objects, but can rather stay inside Adobe Lightroom.

In the video below, Kelby is working on an image showing three knives on a wall in India. He wants a fourth knife to fill in an empty area. You would typically use Photoshop for this task, but you can actually use the Spot Removal tool in Lightroom to clone. There are two brush modes, clone and heal. Kelby mentions that clone typically works better, but in the case shown below, he found heal would do the trick.

Make a selection in the area you want your cloned item to appear. Lightroom will then select a place in the image as the source, very likely not where you want it. No problem, click in the middle of the new selection area and drag it over to where it goes over the area you want to clone.

For more from Scott Kelby, visit Lightroom Killer Tips and the KelbyOne YouTube channel.

How Mule Racing Led to Mule Cloning – Smithsonian

Posted: at 3:24 pm

Idaho Gem, the first cloned mule, only two days old in this photo but already aww-inducing.

smithsonian.com 3 hours ago

There are no mule stud farms.

Though mules look sort of like donkeys and sort of like horses, theyre actually a hybrid of the two species, and in almost all cases mules cannot reproduce. Thats one of the reasons why, on this day in 2003, the mule was the first member of the horse family to be cloned, according to The Associated Press. Although mule racing is an accepted sport, it has no great lines of champions the way horse racing does, so it needed another way to keep bloodlines alive.

It was a big victory: According to Helen Pearson for Nature, equines such as mules and horses were difficult to clone usingthe method that famously produced Dolly the sheep, the first cloned mammal, in 1996. No donkeys were involved in producing the cloned mule, Pearson writes: The team took DNA from a mule fetus, shot it into a horse egg emptied of its own DNA, and implanted the embryos into mares. Out of 305 attempts, this one was the first to take, after calcium levels were boosted in the eggs to encourage cells to divide.

The funder for the mule-cloning project was the president of the American Mule Racing Association, Don Jacklin. Jacklin wanted to bring the worlds attention to racing mules, lead scientist on the project Gordon Woods told NPR in 2006. Jacklin was also hoping to clone animals from his champion racer, Taz, Woods said. Idaho Gem, the first cloned mule, was part of Taz's line, although not a direct copy of Taz, because he was produced with DNA froma fetus that would have been Taz's brother.

But its not like a genetic clone of another animal would be the exact same animal, NPR notes. Anybody who has ever met identical twins knows that genetics are only part of the equation when it comes to individuals. Cloning is replication, not resurrection, Woods told NPR. Idaho Gem was a little bit of a stinker, he said. The next two, Utah Pioneer and Idaho Star, each had their own personalities as well.

Idaho Gem and little brother Idaho Star, also a clone, completed their first professional races in 2006. In spite of their different personalities, each won its respective race. That provided important proof that cloned animals could win, according to Wade Goodwyn for NPR.

Although cloned mules have gained acceptance in the mule racing community, thats far from the case for cloned horses in the racing community. In 2003, mule cloners were considering the possibility that eventually race horses might be cloned as well, which could earn big fees. The expensive and easily injured animals are often castrated to improve their tempers. Cloning race horses could allow a big winners line to continue. But nothing has come of that planthe Jockey Club, which oversees race horses in the United States, wont even register horses that are the product of artificial insemination, never mind cloning.

But a small horse cloning industry exists in Texas to serve sports, like barrel racing and polo matches, that are outside the purview of the Jockey Club.

Database Virtualization (Cloning) for SQL Server DBAs and Developers – SQL Server Pro

Posted: May 2, 2017 at 11:06 pm

The trend toward virtualized computing resources shows no signs of abating. Compute, memory, storage, and operating systems are commonly available on-demand. Code is accessed via Git or other repositories, and can be deployed to automated build and test environments in seconds. Developers are free to work without worrying about infrastructure, except when it comes to working with databases.

Relational databases are large and can take hours to copy or move and provisioning environments for Dev and Test is a challenge. Surveys indicate most organizations update SQL Server environments for Dev and Test only twice monthly (or less). DBAs are under increasing pressure to retool to deliver frequent, on-demand production data environments.

Fortunately, solutions from Red Gate and Windocks have recently been launched that deliver simple to use and affordable support for SQL Server cloning. In this article well look at the technology and benefits of cloning, and the solutions from Red Gate and Windocks. Full disclosure, I am a principal at Windocks.

Deliver Production Databases for Dev and Test with Database Clones

Database cloning is a best practice, and arguably the only practical method, for delivery of large data environments for development and test. With cloning a production terabyte class environment can be delivered to each developer or tester, and environments can be refreshed daily.

Both Red Gate and Windocks clones are based on Windows virtual disks. Cloning begins with a backup or snapshot that is restored to a Virtual Hard Disk (VHD), creating a full byte copy of the database environment. This parent image becomes a read-only source that is cloned by creation of differencing disks. Differencing disks include pointers to the parent image for read access to the source data, but also store any changes made. Importantly, clones are created in seconds, and require a small increment in storage. Once a Terabyte class environment is available in a parent image, clones can be created and delivered to SQL Server instances in seconds, with each using only 40 MB of storage!

Red Gate SQL Clone

Red Gate SQL Clone is a client/server architecture with a web UI to manage the creation of parent images, and delivers mountable clones to SQL Server instances. SQL Clone server runs on Windows Server 2008r2, 2012, or 2016, and supports Virtual Machines and Windocks containers.

Image by Red Gate. SQL Clone provides users and administrators with a simple web interface to create parent images and clones.

Windocks 2.0

Windocks is a port of Dockers open source to Windows, supporting all editions of Windows 8 and 10, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2016, and all editions of SQL Server 2008 onward.

Containers are named SQL Server instances that are created in seconds, with integrated support for database cloning. Teams work on isolated containers on a shared server, and typically reduce the number of VMs used by up to 10:1. Containers support multi-tier environments, and are used to delivery of SQL Server environments or environments that include .NET + SQL Server. DBAs and developers can choose between using standard Docker client software or a web interface to create the parent image and associated containers. A single click on SQL image delivers a running SQL Server container with the cloned database in seconds.

Two Good Solutions for SQL Server DBAs and Developers

Red Gates SQL Clone is a good solution for anyone that needs support for large SQL Server databases. SQL Clone supports Windows Server 2008r2, Server 2012, and Server 2016, and delivers clones to both containers and VM based SQL instances. SQL Clone is available for 5 named users starting at $6,995.

Windocks 2.0 delivers containers with integrated SQL Server database cloning, starting at $99/month for support of 10 simultaneous containers with clones. Windocks cloning supports Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions, as well as Windows Server 2012 r2 and Server 2016. Windocks delivers integrated container + clone management, with clones and mount points cleaned up whenever a container is removed.

Windocks cloning is included in a free Community Edition that is available for download here.

Twenty years after Dolly the Sheep, this mystique about cloning continues – Michigan Radio

Posted: April 30, 2017 at 10:30 pm

Listen to today's Environment Report above.

Students in northern Michigan are planting clones of ancient sequoias today.

There's a grove of sequoias along the shores of Lake Michigan on the site of a former Morton Salt factory.

Sequoia trees are not native to Michigan, but this grove has grown in Manistee for more than 65 years when they were brought here from the West Coast. Now, those trees are going to take another trip, or their clones will.

Students who attend Interlochen Arts Academy are planting them on campus along Green Lake. The clones are from Archangel Ancient Tree Archive.

David Milarch is the group's co-founder. He says theyre planting clones of redwoods around the world today.

Ninety-six percent of all of our redwoods have been cut down, butchered and sold, Milarch says.

Here's a look at how the group collects genetic material from these old growth trees:

Both the Interlochen Center for the Arts and nearby Interlochen State Park have lost many trees recently due to disease and bug infestation.

Head park ranger Chris Stark has mixed feelings about the planting. He'd prefer to plant native varieties, such as the white pine.
