CF Industries (CF) Q4 Loss Wider than Expected, Sales Miss – Zacks.com
Posted: February 19, 2017 at 11:22 am
Fertilizer maker, CF Industries (CF - Free Report) swung to a loss of $320 million or $1.38 per share in the fourth quarter of 2016 from a profit of $27 million or 11 cents per share recorded a year ago. The results in the reported quarter include impairment charges of $134 million related to the companys investment in Point Lisas Nitrogen Limited.
Barring one-time items, adjusted loss came in at 39 cents per share for the quarter, versus earnings of 72 cents per share recorded a year ago. Loss per share was wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 6 cents.
Sales slipped roughly 22% year over year to $867 million in the quarter, and missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $905.6 million. Sales were hurt by reduced average selling prices across all segments. Excess nitrogen supply continued to weigh on prices in the quarter.
Segment Review
Sales for the Ammonia segment plunged roughly 44% year over year to $211 million in the reported quarter. Ammonia sales volumes fell 7% year over year to 762,000 tons, affected by unfavorable weather conditions and certain economic factors. Average selling prices declined 40% to $277 per ton owing to excess global nitrogen supply.
Sales for the Granular Urea segment dipped roughly 3% year over year to $189 million. Sales volumes jumped 25% year over year to 883,000 tons, driven by additional volume available for sale from the company's Donaldsonville Nitrogen Complex. Average selling prices for granular urea declined 22% to $214 per ton owing to elevated global nitrogen supply.
Sales in the UAN (urea ammonium nitrate solution) segment dropped 17% year over year to $305 million. UAN sales volume jumped 28% to 2,047,000 in the quarter due to additional volume available for sale from the Donaldsonville plant. Average selling prices went down 35% to $149 per ton, hurt by elevated global nitrogen supply.
Sales in the AN (ammonium nitrate) segment fell 19% year over year to $93 million. Sales volumes rose 9% to 541,000 tons on higher volumes across North America and the U.K. Average selling prices dropped 26% to $172 per ton on excess nitrogen supply.
The Other segments sales rose around 9% year over year to $69 million. Sales volumes were 24% higher in the reported quarter at 450,000 tons. Average selling price decreased 13% to $153 per ton due to high levels of global nitrogen supply.
Financials
CF Industries cash and cash equivalents were $1,164 million at the end of 2016, a four-fold year over year rise. Long-term debt was $5,778 million, up around 4% year over year. Outlook
CF Industries sees demand for nitrogen in North America to be relatively unchanged on a year over year basis in 2017. The company envisions 89.5 million acres of corn to be planted and less than 50 million acres of wheat to be planted in the U.S. this year. In Canada, reduced grain planting is expected to be more than offset by higher canola plantings. As such, the company sees total nitrogen fertilizer demand in North America to be roughly 16 million nutrient tons for 2017.
CF Industries anticipates nitrogen prices to continue to improve in North America during the first half of 2017. However, an uncertain pricing environment is expected during the second half as additional nitrogen capacity comes online globally including a considerable increase in North America.
For 2017, the company expects new capital expenditures in the band of around $400 to $450 million for sustaining and other operations.
Price Performance
CF Industries has outperformed the Zacks categorized Fertilizers industry in the past three months, aided by its efforts to boost production capacity. The companys shares have gained around 27.2% over this period, compared with roughly 16.4% gain recorded by the industry.
Zacks Rank & Key Picks
CF Industries currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Better-ranked companies in the basic materials space include Methanex Corporation (MEOH - Free Report) , Albemarle Corporation (ALB - Free Report) and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (SMG - Free Report) .

Kansas City Royals: Yost Plans To Use Alex Gordon In CF – Call to the Pen

Los Angeles Dodgers Sell Darin Rufs Contract to a KBO Team by Greg Goldstein
Nick Swisher Announces Retirement, Move to FOX Sports by Tim Haberin
During the Royals first full-squad workout at their spring training facility in Surprise, AZ, Ned Yost informed reporters that the team was going tobe experimental and open minded with their outfield this spring.
The second overall pick in 2005, Alex Gordon has had an unusual career path. Gordon started his career as a third baseman, but was unable to hit well enough to stick at the position. In 2011 the Royals made him a full-time left fielder, a move that has paid enormous dividends. From 2011-2014, Gordon won 4 straight Gold Gloves. His 87 Defensive Runs Saved rankfirst among outfielders in that stretch, as do his 60.4 Ultimate Zone Rating and 35.9 Arm rating.
Most first round picks (that are position players) provide value with their bat. Gordon, on the other hand, has been stronger with the glove throughout his career. His career 110 wRC+ranks 87thsince his debut in 2007. On the flip side of things, Gordons 99 DRS (including his time at 3B) places 3rd in that span. While hes had some strong offensive seasons, Gordon has long been considered a glove-first player.
Now it appears the Royals will try and move Gordon around some more. The departure of Jarrod Dyson, alongwith the arrivals of Brandon Moss and Jorge Soler, leavestheRoyals defensively weakened. Dyson is regarded as a very good defender in the outfield, while both Moss and Soler are average at best. As Yost explained, the team is relying on Gordons versatility to save the Royals outfield defense:
This might have been a good idea if Gordon were still in his 20s, but players practicallynever shift to amore demanding position once they reach their 30s. Now 33 years old, Gordon haslost a step defensively in the past two seasons. His 15.7 UZR since2015 ranks 9th, which isnt so bad. However hisArm rating of 2.3 (22nd) and 11 DRS (18th) clearly display that Gordon isnt the same outfielder he used to be. In factGordons teammate, CF Lorenzo Cain, has rated as a better defender according to DRS and UZRsince becoming an everyday player. Therefore its highly unlikely that this will be anything more than a spring training experiment.

Canyon Ultimate CF Evo 10.0 SL review – BikeRadar – BikeRadar.com
Posted: February 18, 2017 at 4:22 am
The fight to be light is unending in cycling and Canyon's latest featherweight ace is the 665g Ultimate CF Evo 10.0. I got a world exclusive on the first Evo 10.0 to leave the factory and took it out for two rides.
The Ultimate CF Evo 10.0 SL is claimed to weigh 4.96kg, with a frame weight of 665g and a 270g fork, but measured on our scales the bike came in at 5.1kg with no pedals or cages.
This isnt entirely uncharted territory. Cervlos R5Ca had similar figures back in 2010 and has evolved further since, while Trek, Merida and Fuji have all gone sub-700g, too. And those are just the big brands; low-volume specialists like AX Lightness go even lighter.
Canyon claims its bike differs because it refused to compromise stiffness and responsiveness to hit this weight. It wasnt built to be the absolute lightest, it was built to still ride like an Ultimate, Canyons marketing manager Nick Allen said.
Part of achieving this involved a special ultra-high modulus, pitch-based carbon fibre, and access to it, Canyon claims, required special permission from the Japanese Ministry of Defence. Canyon mentions this frequently. We can forgive them, though, it does sound cool.
As world exclusive first rides go, this was one of the less glamorous: my commute home from the office in central Bristol in England, rather than, say, the hills of Tuscany or the Cte dAzur.
But what my 24-mile route lacks in prestige it makes up for in function, with one proper climb and various other drags and punchy ramps, along with every variation of road quality.
Plus, nothing highlights a bikes relative performance better than the roads you ride a few hundred times per year and I had a much longer and tougher ride planned for a few days later.
On a late evening ride home, the Ultimate Evo bombarded me with sensations. Its lightness is ever present, tangible even when coasting stood on the pedals. Its also expletive-inducing when you stamp on the pedals and feel the bike snap forwards.
It makes every hill slightly easier, even the gentle drags, as if its tilting the road in your favour and knocking a percent off every gradient.
The Evo steers like an Ultimate, which is to say precisely and sharply, though the farther reaches of its agility were made harder to exploit by the skinny, hard, TT tubulars. Also,22mm tubs at necessarily high pressures don't exactly flatter a bike's ride.
There is still a fair level of compliance in the frame, though, and an incredible amount in the clever split VCLS 2.0 seatpost.
Having tested a high-spec Ultimate CF SLX not long ago, Id say no comfort has been lost with the gram-chasing and that on the same wheels and tyres the SLX and Evo would be on par riding over bad roads.
The carbon fibre spokes are tied at the crosses for extra stiffness, which really works to boost response and eliminate brake rub
This makes it only more impressive that the stiffness under power is also exceptionally high.
Like the CF SLX, the CF Evo feels extremely efficient. Super-light frames tend to fall into two groups: those that have achieved the weight by using higher grade materials, which preserve or even increase stiffness, and those which save grams by removing material and compromising the ride to perhaps hit a great stiffness-to-weight ratio, but with lower absolute stiffness sometimes much lower.
The second group is fine for sitting in the saddle and spinning up a mountain, but theres so much more to cycling than that. Happily, the CF Evo is one of the first group. Its a bike you could take to any race and any event.
The Lightweight Meilenstein Obermayer wheels are both the spec highlight and a dominant factor in the ride.
At a claimed 935g for the pair! theyre astonishingly light and at 4,500 in this extra-special Obermayer spec theyre also astonishingly expensive. While 8,999 is a huge amount of money for a bicycle, youd have to say Canyon makes the CF Evo 10.0 SL appear to be as good value as every other one of its bikes.
These wheels are made differently to most and they feel it, with idiosyncrasies all of their own.
The carbon fibre spokes are tied at the crosses for extra stiffness, which really works to boost response and eliminate brake rub, yet the unloaded spokes move and make a noise when youre out of the saddle.
Dry braking is good, but wet braking is not and their shape is radically different from the blunt profile hegemony established by ENVE and Zipp. When the wind is low, they're still fast and their thin profile slices through the air, but they can be twitchy when the wind gets up.
The SRAM Red drivetrain is familiar, but a less common sight on original equipment spec recently. Personally, I love its crisp, snappy shifting, though its always possible to miss-shift going up the block.
To do away with that altogether go for the outstanding eTap version. The THM crankset looks spectacular, weighs little and is forgotten when riding because its also hugely stiff. The component most at risk of compromising performance for low weight is the brakeset, but the THM Fibulas deliver superb power and control.
To really put the Canyon through its paces I took it for a 71-mile ride and took in as many hills as possible around Bath. A few interesting things came to light. First, and unsurprisingly, the steeper the hill the brighter the Evo shines.
Second, its speed uphill means that your overall average speed isnt eroded by each ascent as much as youre used to and this applies to everyone regardless of fitness; it simply makes hilly rides faster to a greater extent than makes sense, given its weight alone only saves around 10 seconds on a seven-minute climb.
The 50/34 11-25 gearing is also well judged, providing low ratios for tough climbs while keeping them closely spaced to avoid big gaps.
Its pretty fast on the flat but it doesnt feel it. The CF Evo is so light and the wheels have so little inertia that you can feel every gust of wind.
A number of brands have sub-5kg bikes and Ive ridden most of them. The Cervlo R5Ca was the original in the 700g bracket and was hugely impressive back in 2010.
It has been improved and lightened since as the Cervlo RCA, which is now claimed at 670g a number you might guess that Canyon was keen to undercut but retails at 7,599 for the frameset.
Perhaps the toughest current rival to the Ultimate Evo is the Trek monda SLR 10
The 4.95kg Fuji SL 1.1 burned brightly but briefly in 201516. It was very similar to the Canyon with SRAM Red and ultralight all-carbon wheels, but with Reynolds RZRs. The ride was also very similar, which is to say fabulous, and it was only 8,500, but it sadly no longer exists in that guise.
Much less missed is the Merida Scultura 9000. I rode the 6.2kg version and not the 4.5kg 9000 Ltd, but they share the same 680g frame apparently made from overcooked spaghetti.
Imprecise and wobbly under power, it had clearly sacrificed stiffness to reach the weight target and Merida later admitted as much, also confessing that its team rode the heavier but stiffer version below it in the range. It was a reminder of why weight loss must never come at the cost of frame integrity.
Perhaps the toughest current rival to the Ultimate Evo is the Trek monda SLR 10, but that has also changed. While it was launched as an 11k, 4.65kg halo model, the spec has matured into something a little more usable and its now a claimed 5.38kg and 9,700.
I tested a 6.2kg SLR 9, which uses the same stiff, eager and accurate frame, but no longer has the weight weenie bragging rights of the Canyon.
So, is it the perfect road bike? No. The wheels and tyres compromise it too much for that. But it is spectacularly good and it would be close to perfect in the right context, such as the HotChillee Alpine Challenge or Haute Route.
It sounds harsh, but not unfair, to say that most of what makes this bike immediately special is the build.
You could throw these components at many frames, not least the Ultimate CF SLX, and build an incredibly light bike with almost the same characteristics.
The Evo isthat little bit lighter and its frame performance hasnt been compromised to get there. The lucky few who get to own one will love it. The rest of us can look forward to what the next generation Ultimate CF SLX might offer.

Op/Ed: Sanville wrong for U-CF – Chadds Ford Live
Posted: at 4:22 am
At the Unionville-Chadds Ford School Board public meeting on Jan. 23, the directors took the remarkable action of accepting Superintendent John Sanville's resignation with two years remaining on his current contract. This is probably the best thing this current board has ever done.
However, right after this action the board took what is probably the worst decision ever made in our district. The members of the board voted unanimously to give Sanville a new five-year contract with an increase in salary to $255000, or a 15.4 percent annual increase. After six years, the superintendent's salary has nearly doubled.
If he completely serves out this new contract, he will have served roughly 10 years with an average yearly salary of $240,000. Additionally he will have earned benefits for vacations, a sabbatical, health insurance, and funds for retirement.
The board's action is highly questionable, definitely unethical, and possibly illegal. When an open position occurs in the district, it should be advertised, those interested in filling the opening should be interviewed, and the best applicant should be offered the position. Board ignored all these steps.
Since Sanville became superintendent in 2011 at an annual salary of $180000, the student body has experienced extensive bullying, drunken students have entered the high school building during class time, and three students have entered the building armed with knives.
I do not recall such actions having ever occurred in the sixty years that i have been a resident of the district.
The superintendent allows some out of district students to attend our schools without paying any tuition or taxes. Sanville lied by claiming this was not occurring. I am aware and have also been told this illegal action is still continuing.
The superintendent and board approved a $70 million renovation and expansion of the high school. In taking this action, the public results of two district referenda were completely ignored.
Annual budgets have grown every year at an average rate 1 percent greater that the educational cost of living increases. The district's taxpayers have not experienced a year without a tax increase since 1998.
Sanville has lost two excellent members from his staff. These were Sharon Allen Spann, director of Pupil and Staff Services, and Kenneth E. Batchelor, assistant to the superintendent.
And finally the annual ranking of schools done by U.S. News and World Report last reported our district ranked number 8 in our State and number 510 nationally last year. In 2012 the magazine reported that UCF was fourth in the State and number 394. Both rankings are significantly lower since Sanville was hired.
All these dreadful results occurred during Sanvilles time in office. The board gave no reasons why he deserves a raise or even continued employment in our district. Our district deserves a much better performance by our superintendent.
** (Editors note: The high school renovation project was approved in 2009, two years before Sanville became superintendent. The questionable admission of non-district students into U-CF schools also happened under a previous administration.)

CF Industries Stock Fell on Lower-than-Expected 4Q16 Earnings PART 6 OF 6
CF Industries (CF) financial performance continued to disappointinvestors in 4Q16. The company is the largest nitrogen fertilizer producer in the US. According to CF Industries, the company will import 30% of its 2017 nitrogen requirements. Falling fertilizer prices impact the companys bottom line.
Overall, the gross margins for CF Industries combined segment contracted from 25.1% in 4Q15 to 10.8% in 4Q16. Similarly, the adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization) margins fell from 39.9% in 4Q15 to 15.3% in 4Q16. The company reported a net adjusted loss of 10.4% from a net profit margin of 15.1% in 4Q15.
Bear in mind that these margins are after adjustments. The adjustments include adding back loss on natural gas derivatives, expansion project expenses, plant expansion costs, a gain on foreign currency transactions, income tax adjustments related to thetermination of the OCI agreement, and debt-related fees. Considering that the gross margins are thin, investors must tread with caution due to CF Industries 4Q16 earnings.
CF Industries profitabilitydepends on how fertilizer and raw material prices perform.Prices will also affect the profitability of PotashCorp (POT), Mosaic (MOS), CVR Partners (UAN), and other players in the agricultural fertilizer industry (MOO) (SPX-INDEX).

Agriculture Stocks Feb 15 Earnings Roster: ANDE, BG, CF – Zacks.com
Posted: February 14, 2017 at 11:30 am
We are in the final lap of the fourth-quarter earnings season, with 358 companies on the S&P 500 index having already reported their quarterly numbers. The results so far have been quite encouraging with growth on track to be the highest in two years and total earnings for the quarter set to be a new quarterly record.
Per the latest Earnings Preview report, considering the actual results from the S&P 500 members that have reported, total earnings are expected to rise 7.5% year over year on the back of a 3.9% growth in revenues.
In this write-up, we put the spotlight on a few agriculture companies that are scheduled to report their quarterly results on Feb 15.
The agriculture market is not out of the woods yet and negative sentiment among investors keen on this space prevails. The persistent softness in agricultural commodity pricing is a concern for fertilizer and agricultural chemicals companies as it is hindering fertilizer use by farmers given the adverse effect of lower crop pricing on growers income. Lower farm income has a negative influence on growers nutrient purchasing decisions.
A challenging currency environment along with economic weakness has also slowed down demand for nutrients across certain emerging markets. Further, fertilizer makers remain exposed to a difficult pricing environment for the nutrients they sell. Global capacity expansion continues to exert pressure on fertilizer prices. Margins of these companies remain thwarted by a weak nutrient pricing environment.
The Andersons, Inc. (ANDE - Free Report) is scheduled to report fourth-quarter 2016 results after the close of market. In the last reported quarter, Andersons reported third-quarter 2016 earnings of 6 cents per share, marking a reversal from the prior-year quarters loss of 4 cents per share despite a 5.4% drop in revenues.
The Andersons, Inc. Price and EPS Surprise
The Andersons, Inc. Price and EPS Surprise | The Andersons, Inc. Quote
The company reported a 73.91% negative earnings surprise in the last quarter. In the past four quarters, the company has a average negative earnings surprise of 392.23%.
Andersons has underperformed the Zacks categorized Agriculture/Products industry in the past three months. The Andersons stock has advanced 7.8% while the sub industry has gained 10.4% in the same time frame.
Oversupply and falling prices continue to challenge Andersons Plant Nutrient volumes and margins while softening of railcar demand and lower utilization levels will hurt the Rail Group.
Our proven model does not conclusively show that Andersons is likely to beat estimates this quarter. This is because a stock needs to have both a positive Earnings ESP and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) for this to happen. You can uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before theyre reported with our Earnings ESP Filter.
Though Andersons Zacks Rank #3 increases the predictive power of the ESP, its 0.00% ESP makes surprise prediction difficult. You can see the complete list of todays Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.
Bunge Limited (BG - Free Report) is scheduled to report fourth-quarter 2016 earnings before the opening bell. In the last reported quarter, the company had reported a drop in earnings despite an increase in revenues.
Bunge Limited Price and EPS Surprise
Bunge Limited Price and EPS Surprise | Bunge Limited Quote
Bunge had reported a negative earnings surprise of 9.88% in the last quarter. Bunge beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate in two of the last four quarters while it missed the same twice. Overall, the company has a positive earnings surprise of 42.29%.
Bunge has underperformed the Zacks categorized Agriculture/Products industry in the past three months. The stock has increased 2.5% while the sub industry has witnessed a gain of 10.4% in the same time period.
The combination of Bunges Zacks Rank #4 (Sell) and an Earnings ESP of -5.00% makes an earnings beat unlikely this quarter. Note that we caution against stocks with a Zacks Rank #4 or #5 (Sell-rated stocks) going into an earnings announcement.
CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (CF - Free Report) is scheduled to report fourth-quarter 2016 results after the bell. In the third quarter, the company had reported decline in both the top line and bottom line.
CF Industries Holdings, Inc. Price and EPS Surprise
CF Industries Holdings, Inc. Price and EPS Surprise | CF Industries Holdings, Inc. Quote
In the last reported quarter, the company had delivered a positive earnings surprise of 160.00%. CF Industries missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate in three of the trailing four quarters with an average negative surprise of 18.83%.
CF Industries has outperformed the Zacks categorized Fertilizers industry in the past three months. The companys shares have surged around 30.2% over this period, compared with the 13.3% increase recorded by the industry.
A difficult pricing environment is expected to continue to weigh on the companys sales in the fourth quarter. The company has an Earnings ESP of -50.00% and a Zacks Rank #3, making it difficult to predict an earnings beat. (Read more: CF Industries Q4 Earnings Preview: What's in the Cards? )

Team Katusha has certainly changed its make up for the upcoming season. A Swiss registration, a new joint-title sponsor in Alpecin and the arrival of individual time trial World Champion Tony Martin gives the team a fresh new look. Whilst these aspects of the team have changed, the bikes remain much the same from last year's season.
Tiago Machado rides the Canyon Aeroad CF SLX with a combination of Zipp Firecrest 303 wheels, a SRAM Red eTap groupset and Selle Italia provide the saddle and handlebar tape. The finishing kit is Canyon's in-house design made up of a S27 Aero VCLS carbon seatpost and an integrated handlebar and stem combination, the H11 Aerocockpit.
The Zipp wheels are paired with Continental Competition 25mm tubular tyres, with the professional peloton issue electrical tape to prevent any unwanted valve rattle.
Although the SRAM groupset provides wireless shifting, Team Katusha-Alpecin are riding a Di2 focussed frameset with the internal cable routing holes bunged up at the rear dropout. With SRAM not manufacturing any direct-mount brakes, the bike is equipped with Shimano Dura-Ace direct mount brakes.
