Delta Phi Epsilon raises $4000 for CF – Portsmouth Daily Times

Sorority Vice President of Programming Ruthie Chaban at the 2017 65 Roses Gala at Shawnee State University.

The sisters of SSUs Delta Phi Epsilon word hard to raise funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Delta Phi Epsilon sorority raised $4,000 through the 2017 65 Roses Gala, all of which will go to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event took place on March 18 in the Sodexo Ballroom at Shawnee State University.

We had three speaking who had either dealt with Cystic Fibrosis themselves or had child who had Cystic Fibrosis, there was a silent auction, and throughout the evening our guests had that opportunity to play a live version of the board game Clue, Vice President of Programming, Ruthie Chaban stated.

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the sororitys three major philanthropies.

The National Institute of Health explains that Cystic Fibrosis is an inherited disease of the secretory glands, including those that produce mucus and sweat. The disease mostly affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses and sex organs. People with Cystic Fibrosis tend to live into their mid-30s and occasionally into their 40s and 50s. Complications of the disease include damaged airways, chronic infections, nasal polyps, coughing up blood and even respiratory failure. There are more than 30,000 people in the U.S. living with Cystic Fibrosis. 1,000 more are diagnosed each year.

The 65 Roses Gala is called that because in 1965 a little boy over heard his mother talking about his Cystic Fibrosis but believed that what she was saying was 65 Roses, Chaban explained.

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation explains that the story dates back to 1965 when a 4-year-old Richard Weiss mispronounced his disease. His mother Mary Weiss started volunteering for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that year when she found out that all three of her little boys had Cystic Fibrosis. She was responsible for calling outside organizations for financial support when the young Ricky came into the room and told his mom that he knew why she making all these calls. The mother was caught off guard, thinking her son did not know he had Cystic Fibrosis. When she asked her son what it was she was working for her her told her it was for 65 Roses. Richard died in 2014 but not before leaving an impact. His endearing childhood misunderstanding has come to be a commonly used phrase by many children battling the disease.

Each year, Delta Phi Epsilon chapters raise money and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis by holding 65 Roses Galas on campuses around the world.

Delta Phi Epsilon was established on March 17, 1917 at the New York University Law School.

We are a non-secretary school which means that anyone is able to join, Chaban explained. Our motto is Esse Quam Videri which means to be rather than to seem to be and our values are justice, sisterhood, and love. We spend a lot of our time working on community service and raising money for our philanthropies. Such as this week is our ANAD week were we are easing awareness for people who have eating disorders.

Through such philanthropic activities, the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon work with their community to raise money for those with need and learn to be more concerned and active in society while developing caring leadership skills.

Almora Jr. out, Heyward in CF in Maddons Opening Day Cubs lineup

ST. LOUIS By now, everyone knows how Cubs manager Joe Maddon makes out his lineup: At Starbucks, with his iPad.

Kind of basic, but it works for him.

(Id be the hipster manager, using a Le Pen to write it out in my Field Notes.)

You can imagine the rush he got, not from a carmel macchiato, but the reality of penciling in Kyle Schwarber at the top of a lineup and Javier Baez at the bottom.

And what do you know, Jason Heyward is the Opening Day center fielder a year late.

More than five hours before Opening Day, the Cubs released Maddons first lineup that had Schwarber in left field, Ben Zobrist hitting cleanup and playing right field and Heyward in center field. That allowed Maddon to start Baez at second base. New center fielder Albert Almora Jr. might want to get used to platooning not only with Jon Jay, but also Heyward in order to get Baez into the lineup.

Schwarber, Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo as the first three batters of an inning is certainly imposing for any starting pitcher. After that comes Zobrist, a skilled contact hitter with doubles power, Addison Russell comes next, followed by Heywards New Swing, Willson Contreras, Jon Lester and Baez.

Maddon will mix and match his lineup all season because he has a deep, versatile bench, which makes the late-inning situations all the more interesting as he can sub liberally without losing much offensively or defensively.

CF readies radiography program – Ocala

Posted: April 2, 2017 at 8:07 am

Two years in the making

College of Central Florida is in the final stages of opening its new radiography program, one that will help hospitals, urgent care centers and other medical facilities fill job vacancies.

Radiographers, known in recent years as radiologic technologists or rad techs, are best known in general terms as X-ray technicians. It has been two years since CF announced its plans to launch the program.

Last fall, CF hired Mitchell Housenick, who will serve as the radiography program manager. Housenick launched three other radiography programs at colleges around the country, the last of which at Cambridge Institute of Allied Health and Technology in Atlanta. Housenick said he plans to make Ocala home for many years.

Housenick has been putting together the curriculum for CFs two-year course that will meet the strict accreditation standards set forth by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology. CFs curriculum will meet that JRCERTs highest accreditation level Gold Seal status.

Gold Seal ensures employers that the students have taken the state approved curriculum, which based on high ethical standards and transparency.

Up until 2006, radiographers only needed a certification to work in the field. Since then, radiographers must have an associates degree. CFs two-year program will open in August with 20 students.

So far, about three dozen students have applied. CF will host three information sessions for students wishing to know more about careers in radiography. Three sessions will be offered at the CF, 3001 SW College Road: Friday, June 12 and June 15. All sessions will begin at 3 p.m. in Building 37, Room 103.

To qualify for the program, applicants must have 10 credit hours in mathematics, English and anatomy. Students must have a 2.5 grade point average. Students will be ranked based on a point system, which will use grade point averages and other data. Students will not be interviewed.

After completing the 77-credit-hour program, graduates will be eligible to take the certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Housenick said in all of the programs he has launched, every student has passed the certification examine on the first attempt. Students typically get three tries to pass the certification examine.

This (a radiography degree) opens the path into other areas of medical imaging, said Housenick, adding students need the radiography degree to further their careers into mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) , computed tomography (CT), nuclear medicine or other related imagining specialties.

Florida labor statistics state there will be a need for 88 more radiographers in Marion, Levy and Citrus counties by the year 2024. Of those needed positions, 43 will be new positions and the remaining slots will be needed to fill vacated positions.

Local radiographer salaries range from about $35,000 to $50,000 annually. The lower salaries would be for employees of smaller medical groups and private offices and the higher salaries would be for employees working at a trauma hospital, officials said Thursday.

There is a need right now for radiographers in Ocala, said Deanna M. Stentiford, associate dean of health sciences.

For the past decade, CF and Marion Technical College (formerly known as Community Technical & Adult Education, or CTAE) have partnered to offer the degree program. Until now, radiography students took five or so prerequisite courses at CF and then completed the radiography coursework at Marion Technical College.

After finishing that coursework, CF would certify Marion Technical Colleges associate degrees. About 25 Marion Technical College students graduate each year in radiography.

But two years ago, CFs accrediting agency (the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, or SACS) revealed it could no longer accredit CF if it continued to certify off-site programs unless a CF employee was teaching courses in that field at the off-site facility.

The ruling meant that, CF can no longer enter into articulation agreements like the one with Marion Technical College, without a change in the way it was delivered. Deputy Superintendent of Schools Heidi Maier and CF President Jim Henningsen are discussing ways to create a certification pathway so that Marion Technical Colleges program will continue, as well.

We will still offer radiography at Marion Technical College, said Mark Vianello, the School Districts executive director of vocational and technical programs.

Lois Brauckmuller, CFs spokeswoman, confirmed that the school district and CF leadership are having conversations about forming a radiography partnership.

Match Preview – Granada CF vs FC Barcelona – isportsweb.com (blog)

Posted: at 8:07 am

It is tight at the summit of La Liga, and Barcelona will look to go top of the league as they face a tricky away trip to Granada Sunday afternoon.

Barca are two points off league leaders Real Madrid (Barca 63, Madrid 65) who have a game in hand and play Alaves Sunday morning. They have scored the most goals in the league (81) and have lost only ONE league game since October. They also boast the top two leading men for the Pichichi (leagues top goalscorer award) in Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez who are on 25 and 22 league goals respectively. Not to mention also boasting the top two men leading the league in assists in Neymar with 10 and Suarez on nine. In short, M-S-N are pretty good. A win at the Estadio Nuevo Los Carmenes will keep Luis Enriques men in the race for the title and possibly on top depending on Madrids result with Alaves.

Fun Fact Barcelona have nearly five times as many wins as Granada (Barcelona 19, Granada 4) and over five times as fewer losses this season (Barca 3, Granada 17).

As for Granada, they are desperate. Three straight losses have them 19th in the league on 19 points, seven points below Sporting Gijon who are 17th. So even a win against Barcelona wont get them off the relegation zone, but it improve their situation nonetheless. Theyve also scored the second-fewest goals in the league (25) and have given up the second-most goals (57). Time is ticking, manager Lucas Alcaraz will have to pull off a near-miracle in order for this club to escape relegation.

Last time these two teams metwas back in October, with Rafinha scoring the loan goal in a 1-0 win at the Camp Nou.

Matchup To Watch: Neymar (Barcelona) vs Granadas Defense

Is there a better player in the world at the moment than Neymar? A goal and an assist against Uruguay, plus another goal against Paraguay during the international break has him in tremendous form.

4 @neymarjr has scored four goals and has provided four assists in his last four home games for #Brazil in WC Qualifiers. Unstoppable.

OptaJavier (@OptaJavier) March 29, 2017

And if the stat by OptaJavier isnt enough, Neymar has also logged eight goals and 10 assists for the season, the Brazilian is nearly unplayable at the moment. That being said, Granada will have their work cut out for them, even if they stick to playing five defenders at the back.

Prediction Granada 0-3 Barcelona

Its a must-win for both teams, Barcelona need to keep pace with Real Madrid, Granada need to stave off the drop. The trio of Messi-Suarez-Neymar, M-S-N, will be too much for the hosts and should win comfortably. Theres ten games left, and no team can leave anything to chance.

Rangers CF Gomez wouldn’t want to be with any other team | FOX … – FOXSports.com

Posted: March 31, 2017 at 7:16 am

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) Carlos Gomez would play any position for the Texas Rangers. The outfielder just wouldnt want to play for any other team.

Its no question, Im on the right team, Gomez said. I decided to come back this year again because I think that was the best, the smart, move for me. Its the best choice.

After a resurgent six weeks late last season, filling a need for the Rangers and regaining his confidence at the plate, Gomez returned with an $11.5 million contract early in the offseason.

Before that, things were so miserable that Gomez was released by the Houston Astros in late August after hitting .210 with five homers and 29 RBIs in 85 games. The Rangers, needing help in the outfield after Shin-Shoo Choo broke his left arm, signed Gomez to a deal two days later, and he was back in the majors within a week.

While working on swing changes with Rangers coaches, he hit .284 with eight homers and 24 RBIs in 33 games.

Unbelievable, what I think is a rough season, and then finish like that, said Gomez, now 31 and going into his 11th big league season. Im more excited to come back and play a full year with the Rangers.

While a small sample, .284 was also his exact batting average in both 2013 and 2014 with the Milwaukee Brewers when he was twice an All-Star. He hit .361 with three homers and nine RBIs in 14 spring training games in Arizona, finishing with two hits as the designated hitter Wednesday after missing a week with a jammed shoulder.

Gomez played mostly left field for the closing stretch last season as the Rangers won the AL West title, but this season will be the primary center fielder after All-Star Ian Desmond left in free agency. He won a Gold Glove in 2013 while playing center for the Brewers.

Asked how much he looked forward to being back in center field, Gomez responded, its not about me anymore. He said hes flexible to whatever manager Jeff Banister needs him to do in the field or at the plate.

When you start getting older and more veteran, you just want to be in the right place where you can enjoy it every single time, Gomez said. This is a perfect team, you can get a championship and you can enjoy every single game, every single moment.

Gomez also wanted to keep working with hitting coach Anthony Iapoce and assistant hitting coach Justin Mashore after all they did to help him. Mashore even went to visit Gomez at his home in the Dominican Republic for a week during the winter to keep working on the adjustments.

I learned something that I never had in the past, being able to work with some coach there to take my ability to another level, Gomez said. Its a blessing, its good for me.

While Gomez is still swinging hard, dont anticipate seeing him fall down or have his helmet fly off his head when he does now. Even though he has a hard time explaining the changes, he said the biggest thing is being ready and in the right position to make his best swing.

Before, people just see like, `Oh, the guy always swings out of his shoes. Now I swing harder, but I know how to swing hard he said. I want to be free to use my hands every single time.

Corbus Pharmaceuticals says Resunab beats out placebo in CF test – FierceBiotech

Posted: at 7:16 am

Corbus Pharmaceuticals has posted positivetop-line data from its midstage trial of Resunab in certain cystic fibrosis (CF) patients as it plots future trials and talks with regulators.

The Norwood, Massachusetts-based biotech said in a statement it was assessing its candidate anabasum (Resunab) in escalating doses and pitted it against placebo in patients with the fatallung-scarring disease.

The 16-week study dosed 85 patients without regard to their specific CFTR mutation, or infecting pathogens, and continued with all baseline treatment regimens.

The med, the biotech reports, hit its primary objective by showing an acceptable safety and tolerability profile at all doses, with no serious or severe adverse events related to the study drug.

The anabasum cohorts showed a dose-dependent reduction in a number of acute pulmonary exacerbations, the data showed, which was defined as those requiring IV antibiotics compared to a dummy therapy.

Patients in the highest dose cohort of anabasum (20mg orally, twice a day) had a 75% reduction in the annualized rate of pulmonary exacerbations, compared to the placebo cohort.

In this high dose group, the biomarker endpoints of inflammatory mediators in the sputum including interleukin-8, neutrophil elastase and sputum immunoglobulin G were also reduced, as well as serum C-reactive protein. A consistent reduction in multiple inflammatory cells, including total leukocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and macrophages was also observed in the sputum, the company says.

On safety, 6 serious adverse events (SAEs) occurred the anabasum-treated patients, with the same numbers of SAEs also seen placebo-treated patients. After dosing, the biotech said that 10 patients stopped the study early: 3 withdrew consent, 5 withdrew due to adverse events (2 on placebo, 3 on anabasum), while 1 subject was lost to follow-up and 2 withdrew for treatment-unrelated reasons.

The biotech is looking to prove its theory that targeting the CB2 receptor pathway found in lymphocytes, dendritic cells, macrophages, glial cells and other immune cells can turn off a signal for chronic inflammation, and therefore help CF patients.

Corbus said it would now engage in further evaluation of the data and design of the next clinical trial in partnership with CF experts, which includes Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics, the non-profit drug discovery and development affiliate of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, which supported the phase 2 study.

After these chats, Corbus will enter into discussions with the relevant regulatory agencies, it added. The drug already has orphan status from the EMA and a fast track tag from the FDA.

Barbara White, MD, CMO of Corbus, said: We are delighted to see such consistency in data showing clinical benefit coupled with improvement in the inflammatory response in the lungs, especially given the 12 weeks of active dosing and past challenges of others in safely targeting inflammation in CF. We believe these findings reflect the novel mechanism of action of anabasum to activate resolution of innate immune responses without immunosuppression. The company sees 2020 as the year for market approval, should all go well in future trials.

It was initially up 10% premarket on the news, but swiftly fell into the red when some questioned its data. Bio Twitter was not please, with AdamFeuerstein from The Street, saying on Twitter:"Actually anabasum did nothing for CF patients. No change in lung function. Shoddy disclosure of exacerbation endpoint. cherry-picking data. Efficacy of anabasum in this CF study is close to a zero. A lot of hand waving in the PR to obscure negative or missing data."

And when it came to the 75%reduction in exacerbations, he said: "75% of what? Corbus doesnt tell you number of exacerbations. At just 1 dose? Besides, these are acute exacerbations, a subset."

Back in 2015, the then tiny Corbus got a $5 million grant from Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Therapeutics for its sole asset, coming after it made the leap from the OTC market into Nasdaq (under the ticker $CRBP) with a market cap of less than $80 million.

As of yesterday, its market cap was just over $420 million, and has been talked up in the past as being a competitor to CF major Vertex. But the biotech believes that anabasum, which targets inflammation, could help all patients suffering from the disease; Vertex meds, Kalydeco and Orkambi, only treat a subset of CF patients.

The drug is also in testing forfor a number of rare disorders, including scleroderma and dermatomyositis.

Autopsy results pending in death of CF man – Iron Mountain Daily News

Posted: at 7:16 am

FLORENCE, Wis. Although an autopsy was completed Thursday on a Crystal Falls man found dead in the Brule River, results will not be released pending the completion of a toxicology report, Florence County Sheriffs Department officials said.

Deputies do not suspect foul play at this time in the death of 60-year-old Jerry Hamilton.

Hamiltons body was found Wednesday afternoon in about 5 feet of water about 10 feet from his vehicle.

Deputies and Florence firefighters first discovered Hamiltons car about 4:45 p.m. Monday near the Brule River boat landing north of Florence, about 30 feet from shore with its back half in open water.

Deputies believe Hamilton drove onto the ice at the boat landing and along the shore. It appeared Hamilton tried to turn around when the vehicles back tires fell off the ice into open water, deputies said.

Hamiltons family members were especially worried about his disappearance after finding his Crystal Falls home trashed with broken chairs, broken glass and ripped couch cushions.
