When: 7:15 p.m.

Where: Fenway Park, Boston.

TV: Fox (Channel 2 in Detroit).

Radio: WXYT-FM (97.1; other radio affiliates).

First-pitch weather forecast: Partly cloudy, 77 degrees.

Probable starting pitchers: RHP Justin Verlander (4-4, 4.63 ERA) vs. LHP Chris Sale (7-2, 2.89 ERA).

Tigers lineup:

1. Ian Kinsler, 2B 2. Nick Castellanos, 3B 3. Miguel Cabrera, 1B 4. Victor Martinez, DH 5. J.D. Martinez, RF 6. Justin Upton, LF 7. Mikie Mahtook, CF 8. James McCann, C 9. Jose Iglesias, SS

Game notes: A titanic matchup on the mound on national television at Fenway Park. On one side is Verlander, who left his last start on Sunday early with a tweak in his right groin. But he said he's good to go and won't miss a start. On the other side is Boston's prized pick up from the off-season, who has become the ace of the staff. He leads the AL with 119 strikeouts already this season.

For starters: Smith is in CF and batting leadoff – Tampabay.com (blog)

Posted: at 7:14 pm

Mallex Smith, recalled today from Durham to replace the injured Kevin Kiermaier, will start tonight in centerfield and bat leadoff as the Rays open a four-game weekend series against the As.

Smith began the season with the Rays and was batting .261 with a .346 on-base percentage in 23 at-bats over nine games before going on the DL with a hamstring injury.

He was optioned to Durham once he recovered.

The Rays acquired Smith from Seattle in January moments after Seattle acquired him from Atlanta in part because he can play center and serve as a backup for Kiermaier, should the two-time Gold Glove-winning centerfielder get hurt.

The need arose.

Alex Cobb returns to the mound with an extra day of rest after allowing a career-high 14 hits and a career-high nine runs in Seattle last Saturday.

The As are throwing righty Andrew Triggs.

The As lineup features a pair of former Rays C Stephen Vogt and RF Matt Joyce.

Here are the lineups:

R. Davis CF

Joyce RF

Lowrie 2B

K. Davis DH

Alonso 1B

MLB Mock Draft 2017: Future All-Star CF Royce Lewis – Athletics Nation

Posted: at 11:15 pm

John Sickels and SB Nation's site Minor League Ball hosted their annual Mock Draft on Saturday, June 3rd. Guessatomo, Orodawg, and I represented the Oakland As, and we attempted to select a group of players that would be realistic targets for the As without doing anything stupid like taking Pavin Smith 6th overall. The surprise selection of OF Austin Beck #4 overall by the Tampa Bay Rays led Orodawg to redistribute the chairs in his domicile and presented us the opportunity to select SS/OF Royce Lewis with the 6th pick in the draft.

JSerra Catholic High School, San Juan Capistrano, CA

DOB: 6/5/1999 / Height: 61" / Weight: 185

Bats: R Throws: R

MLB Scouting Grades:

Hit = 55 / Power = 45 / Run = 70 / Arm = 50 / Fielding = 50 / Overall = 55

Royce Lewis is ranked the 3rd-best amateur prospect by Perfect Game. FanGraphs rates him 4th overall, while MLB.com, Baseball America, and Herosports have him ranked #5. By all accounts drafting Lewis at #6 is good value and slightly fortuitous.

Lewis is arguably the best position prospect in the draft class. Scouts agree he can stay up the middle, with some thinking he can stay at SS and others projecting him to end up a plus CF. He was a SS for his high school team and a CF when playing on the summer circuit last year, so he has experience at both positions. He shows plus-plus bat speed (70 Grade)while flashing plus raw power (60 Grade)and 80 Grade speed. Baseball America considers him to have the best strike zone judgement among the prep bats and to be one of the best athletes as well. He hit .388/.569/.662 with 4 HR, 24 BB, 7 Ks in 30 games played this year. His make-up is described as off the charts.

Lewis background as a SS would (probably) compel the As to keep him in the infield through at least his first full season in the minor leagues. The power is below-average for now and might not project as more than average at maturity. The swing might need to be cleaned up as he advances up the minor leagues. Drafting prep talent typically means longer development time and more patience on the part of a Front Office.

The Athletics arent very athletic and they dont have a viable, long-term answer in CF. I believe Lewis would change that. His high-ceiling potential could add an All-Star level talent with plus defense at a crucial, up-the-middle position. The odds are low that hes actually available when the As get to select but if hes there hed almost certainly be the best talent on the board.

Phillies Legend Mike Schmidt Trashes Phillies CF Odubel Herrera [Updated] – Deadspin

Posted: June 7, 2017 at 5:22 pm

Mike Schmidt is perhaps the greatest Phillie of all time. The Phillies, as you probably know, have been the worst team in baseball so far this season. But Schmidt works for the Phillies as a color analyst on weekend home games, so youd expect him to refrain from trashing the team when he appeared on 94 WIP in Philadelphia this morning.

He did not!

Schmidt absolutely torched the only player on the Phillies signed to a contract of significant length. Asked if Odubel Herrera could be a player the Phillies could build around, Schmidt had some stupid things to say:

My honest answer to that would be no because of a couple of things. First of all, its a language barrier. Because of that, I think he cant be a guy that would sort of sit in a circle with four, five American players and talk about the game. Or try and learn about the game or discuss the inner workings of the game. Or come over to a guy and say, Man, you gotta run that ball out. Just cant be because of the language barrier that kind of a player.

The Phillies have invested heavily in players from Spanish-speaking countries like Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. Now someone employed by the team is saying Spanish-speaking guys cant be team leaders! The Phillies arent doing so well off the field this year, either. (Incidentally, Herrera speaks English; most if not all major league players speak enough English to tell a guy he should run a ball out.)

Schmidt has previously weighed in on his distaste for bat flippers like Herrera, and basically says Herrera is too exuberant to lead the Phillies:

Hes more of a sort of, play the game, allow his exuberance for the game to kind of spread around the team. I think the fans love him. Hes not afraid to do things that sort of irk the other team if you will, and you know what that is. I probably would hate him if I played against him because of his antics on the field, but hes not afraid. Hes not afraid to do that. Hes learning to play a really good centerfield. They havent figured out where he needs to hit in the batting order yet. To answer your question, those are the reasons that I dont think you can build a team around him. Now, I truly think he can hit second or first on a championship team. Theres no question about that.

Of course, Schmidt is correct in one way: The Phillies likely wont be building a championship team around the guy whos hitting .243 this season.

Update (5:15 p.m. ET): Mike Schmidt is spending this afternoon doing damage control. He apologized to Herrera, who said he accepted it and hopes the whole situation blows over. Schmidt also said this:

Im very sorry that this misrepresentation of my answer occurred and may have offended someone is a new one.

Should You Get Rid of CF Industries (CF) Now? – Zacks.com

Posted: at 5:22 pm

Similar to wise buying decisions, exiting certain underperformers at the right time helps maximize portfolio returns. Selling off losers can be difficult, but if both the share price and estimates are falling, it could be time to get rid of the security before more losses hit your portfolio.

One such stock that you may want to consider dropping is CF Industries Holdings, Inc. (CF - Free Report) , which has witnessed a significant price decline in the past four weeks, and it has seen negative earnings estimate revisions for the current quarter and the current year. A Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell) further confirms weakness in CF.

A key reason for this move has been the negative trend in earnings estimate revisions. For the full year, we have seen two estimates moving down in the past 30 days, compared with no upward revisions. This trend has caused the consensus estimate to trend lower, going from a loss of seven cents a share a month ago to its current level of a loss of 23 cents.

Also, for the current quarter, CF Industries has seen two downward estimate revisions versus no revisions in the opposite direction, dragging the consensus estimate down to four cents a share from 11 cents over the past 30 days.

The stock also has seen some pretty dismal trading lately, as the share price has dropped 7.5% in the past month.

So it may not be a good decision to keep this stock in your portfolio anymore, at least if you dont have a long time horizon to wait.

If you are still interested in the Fertilizers industry, you may instead consider a better-ranked stock - Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (POT). The stock currently holds a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) and may be a better selection at this time. You can seethe complete list of todays Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.

Californium (Cf) – Chemical properties, Health and …

Posted: June 5, 2017 at 7:32 am

Californium

Californium is a radioactive metal which is a memeber of the actinide group of the periodi table. A sample of the metal itself has not been produced yet because its compounds resist reduction. It is expected to be readily attacked by air, steam and acids and not by alkalis.

Californium, the sixth transuranium element to be discovered, was produced by Thompson, Street, Ghioirso, and Seaborg in 1950 by bombarding microgram quantities of 242Cm with 35 MeV helium ions in the Berkeley 60-inch cyclotron.

Californium (III) is the only ion stable in aqueous solutions, all attempts to reduce or oxidize californium (III) having failed. The isotope 249Cf results from the beta decay of 249Bk while the heavier isotopes are produced by intense neutron irradiation by the reactions. The existence of the isotopes 249Cf, 250Cf, 251Cf, and 252Cf makes it feasible to isolate californium in weighable amounts so that its properties can be investigated with macroscopic quantities.

Californium-252 is a very strong neutron emitter. One microgram releases 170 million neutrons per minute, which presents biological hazards. Proper safeguards should be used in handling californium.

Applications

Because californium is a very efficient source of neutrons, many new uses are expected for it. It has already found use in neutron moisture gages and in well logging (the determination of water and oil-bearing layers). It is also being used as a portable neutron source for discovery of metals such as gold or silver by on-the-spot activation analysis. 252-Cf is now being offered for sale by the O.R.N.L. at a cost of $10/mg. As of May 1975, more than 63 mg have been produced and sold. It has been suggested that californium may be produced in certain stellar explosions, called supernovae, for the radioactive decay of 254Cf (55-day half-life) agrees with the characteristics of the light curves of such explosions observed through telescopes. This suggestion, however, is questioned. Californium is also used in cancer therapy.

Californium in the environment

Californium does not occur naturally on Earth. All that there now is has been synthesized, but this element was produced in the past when several nuclear reactors were in operation 2 billion years ago in Africa. Californium can be encountered outside nuclear facilities and research laboratories because it is used in mineral prospetting and for medical diagnosis and treatment.

Californium-252 is a very strong neutron emitter. It is known for being extremely radioactive. These are some of the health hazards of radioactivity that should be taken into account:

The development of nuclear technology has been accompanied by gross as well as minute releases of radioactivity into the atmosphere, the soil, the oceans, seas, and water table, showing up worldwide in animal, vegetable, and inert matter. Radiation crosses species and concentrates through the food chain, subjecting other animals and humans to its damaging effects.

The greatest threat of radioactivity to life as we know it is damage to the gene pool, the genetic make-up of all living species. Genetic damage from radiation exposure is cumulative over lifetimes and generations.

Even low-dose exposures are carcinogenic after extended exposure. The current generation, the one in utero, and all that follow may suffer cancers, immune system damage, leukemias, miscarriages, stillbirths, deformities, and fertility problems. While many of these health problems are on the rise, individuals cannot prove either increase in "background" radiation or specific exposure as the cause. Only epidemiological evidence is scientifically acceptable to impute cause. Perhaps the most extreme outcome over time would be simply the wholesale cessation of the ability to reproduce. Radiation is a known cause of sterility.

Californium-252 is a very strong neutron emitter. It is known for being extremely radioactive.

Radioactivity damages the gene pool not only of humans, but of all living creatures, causing cancers, immune system damage, leukemias, miscarriages, stillbirths, deformities, and fertility problems. Furthermore, genetic damage from radiation exposure is cumulative over lifetimes and generations.
