This Members-Only Club Is Like Soho House for Fashion Interns – Observer

Posted: June 30, 2017 at 5:23 pm

Even though fashion interns spend their summers logging hours in offices rather than soaking up rays at the beach, a highly-covetedSoho House membership or similar, is stillslightly out of budget for most of them. But the world is changing.

CF Clubhouse is a newly opened members-only club geared at creating networking opportunities for college students who are based inNew York City for summer internships. The Nolita pop-up is the child of online platform, CollegeFashionista, which aims to create a community for the fashion stars of tomorrow, by allowing them exclusive membership to an online platform and community of fellow interns/ upcoming fashionistas.

This is a generation of experiencers, so we thought why not give them as many experiences possible in the most socially-shareable space possible? founder Amy Levin explained to the Observer.

Perhaps the best part about CF Clubhouse is that membership is totally and completely free. The CF Clubhouse is open to our Style Guru members. To get there you just have to apply to be a part of CollegeFashionista. Once [youre] accepted, you get access to incredible opportunities, including the Clubhouse, Levin explained, the best part is, there is no fee.

Levin was inspired to create a community for students while studying at Indiana University, in a very college-centric town, where she found herself feeling envious of the opportunities her contemporaries attending schools in New York and LA were experiencing.

I realized there were probably students all over the nation who also felt isolated in their college towns and had similar feelings of wanting to be connected to the fashion industry and build their own resumes. So in August of 2009 I launched CollegeFashionista at five campuses, to create a place where those individuals could go and connect with one another.

CF Clubhouse will be holding several events for its members over the summer, which include a Sephora Beauty Night, a buying and merchandising workshop to fill students in on how to get ahead in the industry, and discussion panels with editors from from Vogueand WhoWhatWear.

As a self-confessed serial intern, Levin generously shared her top tips for interning success.

What you take away from your experience will be a direct reflection of what you put into it. Show initiativeand ask for things to do, instead of waiting around to be given a task. I love interns who proactively work on projects that are beneficial to our organization; that really stands out.

This all leaves us thinking, whats so great aboutSoho House?

Angels CF Mike Trout to take regular batting practice on Friday – FanRag Sports (blog)

Posted: at 5:23 pm

Despite the fact that the Los Angeles Angels have survived without having the best player in baseball on the field, the American League West ball club is getting closer to welcoming back starting center fielder Mike Trout or so it appears. The Angels recently revealed that Trout would be taking regular batting practice alongside his teammates on Friday.

Although no concrete timetable for his eventual return has been set, it seems as though Trouts injured left thumb is responding well after surgery.

He swung the bat 100 percent and said it feels good, said Angels manager Mike Scioscia, via ESPN. Its an important step [on Friday]. Hell hit on the field, get his batting practice underway and see how he responds.

The prolific center fielder has remained out of the Angels lineup since all the way back on May 29 after injuring himself as the result of a head-first slide into second base. With the setback ultimately leading to surgery, Trout suffered both a torn ulnar collateral ligament and dorsal capsule in his left thumb against the Miami Marlins.

Spending his entire seven-year big league career in Los Angeles, the 25-year-old slugger has already made 47 regular-season appearances for the Angels thus far into the 2017 campaign. Over the course of 163 at-bats, he has compiled a .337 batting average with 16 home runs and 36 RBIs alongside a .461 on-base percentage.

For his big league career, Trout has amassed a .308 batting average in addition to 184 home runs, 533 RBIs and a .408 on-base percentage. As it stands today, he has made 858 regular-season appearances atop the highest level en route to receiving 3,160 at-bats in all.

CF Mller appointed on Robin Hood Gardens replacement scheme – Dezeen

Posted: at 11:21 am

Scandinavian firmCF Mllerhas been appointed alongsideHaworth Tompkinsand Metropolitan Workshop on the housing scheme that will replaceRobin Hood Gardens, the brutalist estate in east London designed byAlison and Peter Smithson.

CF Mller's housing will take the place of the eastern block of the iconic estate, while residences by Haworth TompkinsandMetropolitan Workshop who were appointed to the scheme in 2016 will sit on the site of the west wing.

The plansform part of the300 million regeneration of the Robin Hood Gardens estate in Popular, which is being overseenbySwan Housing Association.

The estate, which was completed in 1974, is currently awaiting its demolition, despite a high-profile campaign to save it as aprime example of the brutalist movement.

Dezeen recently used a drone to film the estate, which is partially deserted and boarded up in preparation for its demolition in the coming weeks.

CF Mller's design will provide 330 homes half of which are to be earmarked as affordable for the regeneration schemeknown as theBlackwall Reach Regeneration Project.

Early visuals show the range of one- to five-bedroom flats contained within a brick-clad block on the edge of the garden that currently separates the two wings of the brutalist estate. This outdoor space with its distinctive mound is the only element of Robin Hood Gardens that will be retained. It is to be re-landscaped and renamed theMillennium Green.

"Our approach to this challenging project is to develop an architectural and place-making response with the focus on designing the best possible new homes within a challenging location," saidCF Mller associate partnerRolf Nielsen.

CF Mller's housing will form phase threeof theBlackwall Reach Regeneration Project, which will see 1,500 apartments, commercial spaces and a mosque packed onto thesite beside Blackwall Tunnel thatcurrently offers 252 homes.

Phase one is currently underway, with 98 homes already on site, alongside the mosque, a community centre and an extension of a neighbouring school. Yet to come in this phase which is set for completion in early 2019 are 242 further homes, as well as shops and cafes.

Phase two is expected to begin imminently, and will see the delivery of four buildings byMetropolitan Workshop and Haworth Tompkins, which are to provide 268 homes.

"We were very impressed by their 'inside-out approach' to design. CF Mller really focused on the people who will live in these new homes and the relationship of the homes to the public realm," said Swan's regeneration and development directorGeoff Pearce.

"They were passionate about ensuring we deliver human-scale street scenes and links into the landscape to offset the impact of the busy external environment," he added.

Robin Hood Gardens is consideredexemplary of new brutalism, an architectural stylegaining its name from the French bton-brut, or raw concrete, used to form the structures.

Architects including Richard Rogers, the late Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito and Robert Venturi, as well as the Smithson's son, all petitioned to save the estate. But the campaign failed and politicians have been calling for its demolition since.

Understanding the Urea Cost Curve for CF Industries – Market Realist

Posted: June 28, 2017 at 6:22 am

CF Industries Is Upping Its Game to Become a Nitrogen Contender PART 2 OF 8

Earlierin this series, we discussed how CF Industries (CF) earnings have fallen in recent quarters and how this has affected its stock price.

Not only did CF Industries earnings fall year-over-year (or YoY) in 1Q17, its margins were also significantly lower YoY. To understand why its marginscontracted, lets dig deeper into the cost curve.

In the chart above, we can see urea producers stacked next to each other in ascending order of total production cost by country. The cost of production is made up of three costs: energy costs, other cash costs, and freight and load costs.

On the leftmost side of the x-axis in the chart is the lowest-cost producer of urea, which in this case is North America. On the rightmost side is the highest-cost producer of urea, which in this case is China. Note that China is able to produce urea at a much lower cost by using coal as an energy source.

We can answer the question of how much urea to produce by considering the level of demand for it in the market. In the chart, this demand is estimated to be at an average of 16.8 million short tons in 2017. The level of shipments, in turn, determine the market price for urea, which in this case is estimated to be between $210 per ton and $245 per ton for 2017.

As demand moves lower or higher on the spectrum of producers, market prices move along with it. When demand rises, the next-lowest-cost producer comes online and is known as the marginal producer. As demand continues to rise, the market price rises, and so does the gap between the cost of production for lower-cost producers and their market prices, helping to expand their margins.

Investors (MOO) in PotashCorp (POT), CVR Partners (UAN), and Terra Nitrogen (TNH) will likely want to closely monitor urea demand and prices.

CF Mller appointment spells end for Robin Hood Gardens – Architects’ Journal

Posted: at 6:22 am

Plans byHaworth Tompkins and Metropolitan Workshop to flatten and replace the western block of Alison and Peter Smithsons 1972 Brutalist landmark in east London were approved last year. The phase 2 scheme includes 268 new homes in four new buildings two by each practice (blocks C1, C2, C3 and D).

NowCF Mller has landed phase 3, which will see the eastern side of the Smithsons block demolished to make way for 330 new homes half of them affordable.

The units will range from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom maisonettes.

CF Mller was chosen by project backer Swan Housing Association ahead of five other firms - including HTA and HawkinsBrown - following a competitive process. According to Swan, the practice shone out on the basis of its excellent design ideas for Blackwall Reach and its focus on inside out design which puts the residents of the buildings first.

Swans executive director of regeneration and development, Geoff Pearce. saidCF Mller was passionate about ensuring we deliver human-scale street scenes and links into the landscape to offset the impact of the busy external environment, which is close to the Blackwall Tunnel.

As a regeneration team, we felt strongly the CF Mller team would bring a fresh and positive approach to the next phase of Blackwall Reach and are delighted to be able to further develop the positive working relationship which has proved so productive in relation to their work for us on our regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre.

CF Mller associate partnerRolf Nielsenadded: Our approach to this challenging project is to develop an architectural and placemaking response with the focus on designing the best possible new homes within a challenging location.

This complemented Swans ambitious ideas for regenerating Blackwall Reach.

Split into five phases, the Blackwall Reach project has been masterplanned by Metropolitan Workshop and will eventually replace the estates252 homes with 1,575 new units.

In 2015, the Twentieth Century Society failed in its bid to get statutory protection for the concrete estate. Heritage minister Tracey Crouch granted a second certificate of immunity for the blocks meaning the Smithsons buildings cannot be considered again for listing until 2020.

In 2008 then architecture minister Margaret Hodge also refused to list the estate, agreeing with English Heritage that it was unfit for people to live in.

Panasonic launches ‘business-rugged’ Toughbook CF-XZ6 hybrid – ZDNet

Posted: June 27, 2017 at 7:20 am

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-XZ6

Panasonic has unveiled the latest member of its Toughbook range of business laptops. The model name, Toughbook CF-XZ6, gives little away, but this is a 12-inch 2-in-1 detachable laptop/tablet hybrid that slots into the lowest 'business rugged' rung of Panasonic's ruggedness ladder (next up is 'semi-rugged', followed by 'fully rugged'). This means that while it's considerably slimmer, lighter and more elegant than Panasonic's military-grade 12-inch detachable, the Toughbook CF-33, it's not rated to withstand anything like the same levels of abuse.

Designed for mobile professionals requiring a flexible laptop/tablet hybrid that can handle "the knocks and drops of business life", the Toughbook CF-XZ6 has neither a MIL-STD certification nor an IP (ingress protection) rating. However, Panasonic says that it passes 76cm (desk height) free-fall and 100-kilogram-force pressurised vibration tests.

"I think, in Panasonic terms, the product itself is -- dare I say it -- sexy," said Jon Tucker, Head of Product Marketing for Panasonic Computer Product Solutions (CPS), at the UK launch of the Toughbook CF-XZ6 in Cardiff, Wales. "We're used to doing fully rugged, industrial-looking types of products," Tucker added, "and design-wise this is the sexiest product we've ever brought to market."

In laptop mode the CF-XZ6 weighs 1.18kg and is 22mm thick. The tablet section weighs 640g and is just 9mm thick. The device has two webcams: 2 megapixels (with IR for Windows Hello) at the front, and 8 megapixels at the rear.

The Toughbook CF-XZ6 measures 288.5mm wide by 223.7mm deep by 22mm thick (11.36in. 8.81in. 0.87in.) and weighs 1.18kg (2.6lbs), or 640g (22.6oz) just for the tablet section. It's powered by a latest (7th) generation Intel Core i5-7300U vPro processor and comes with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. The screen is a 12-inch 10-point IPS touchscreen with a quad-HD resolution of 2,160 by 1,440 pixels (216ppi). The anti-reflective 'dual-touch' capacitive touchscreen works with finger input or with an optional Active stylus pen. Other 'project-based' options are available with 4GB or 16GB of RAM and 128GB or 512GB SSDs. The OS is Windows 10 Pro.

For wireless connectivity there's dual-band (2.4/5GHz) 802.11ac wi-fi and Bluetooth 4.1, with 4G LTE broadband available as an option. Panasonic offers plenty of physical connections too: USB-C and 3.5mm audio on the tablet section, plus three USB 3.0, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet (RJ-45) and an SD card slot on the keyboard section.

Unusually, Panasonic includes both legacy VGA and HDMI ports on the CF-XZ6, along with a full-size RJ-45 Ethernet port.

There are 4-cell batteries in both the tablet and keyboard sections, with claimed lives of around 6.5 hours and 7.5 hours respectively, making a total of 14 hours. As usual with detachables, the (removable, hot-swappable) keyboard battery drains first when the device is in laptop mode, leaving maximum charge for use in tablet mode. There's also a dedicated switch that allows you to toggle keyboard-to-tablet charging on and off.

"Any executive would be proud to use this business laptop in front of a customer or prospect," said Jan Kaempfer, General Manager for Marketing at Panasonic CPS in a statement. "Its stylish good looks and super slim design, alongside its powerful business capabilities and durability bring together all the manufacturing excellence of the Panasonic Toughbook range in one device."

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-XZ6 comes with a three-year warranty and will be available in July 2017 at 1,539 (ex. VAT).
