Six pioneering students were recognized at the College of Central Floridas first-ever Timber Harvesting Equipment Program Completion Ceremony last Friday in Chiefland.

The new non-credit program is aimed at preparing students for jobs in the field of logging and timber, an expanding industry in North Central Florida.

Students went through five weeks of classroom instruction and three weeks of hands-on field experience. Upon completion, they received Master Logger Certification, OSHA 10-hour Certification and CPR Certification.

The six students receiving certificates of completion at the Haven Hospice Community Center included: Guy Bowers; Garrett Bowker; Thomas Conrad; Hunter Matus; Charles McCullar; and Joshua Randolph. CF Levy Campus provost Dr. Rayanne Giddis delivered opening and closing remarks, while Levy Campus manager Holly McGlashan and program instructor and consultant Bryan Olmert also spoke and issued certificates.

This has been an incredible experience, McGlashan said. Im so incredibly proud of these six gentlemen. Some of them have overcome some extra barriers and have powered through.

The course includes an introduction to the forest industry and instruction on basic forest management, timber harvesting operations, wildlife management, and safety and equipment operations.

This program is the first of its kind in Florida,Giddis said. It was a difficult path, but these six graduates have done an exceptional job.

Giddis thanked individuals and companies who helped support the program, including Ken and Lynetta Griner and Eric Handley of Usher Land and Timber, the Florida Forest Service, the Florida Forest Association, and Gary Beauchamp, who developed the curriculum for the program.

She noted the material support from places such as Deer Equipment, Ring Power, Tidewater Equipment, Tri-County Oil, Lyme Timber and Prep, The Conservation Fund, Suwannee Timber and Ward Timber as well as support from the CF Forest Advisory Committee and Career Source.

Of Olmert, she said, hes our most valuable player. He was sent from heaven to be our instructor for this program. He was more than an instructor, I think he was a guide and a leader for these students.

Olmert thanked Giddis and McGlashan and his students.

All of these names made my job very easy because the logistics of putting something like this together getting fuel, getting equipment, getting everything to flow was made possible by all those people Rayanne mentioned, he said. The curriculum was so well laid out that it was not an issue for me.

I really have six great guys. They all gave me an awful lot of themselves. Theyve got some learning ahead of them, but theyve got the basics.

I couldnt be prouder of all of them. I think they all have a bright future.

Some of the programs graduates have family that are linked to the timber industry, while others entered out of curiousity for the industry and a potential career.

My teacher in high school told me it might be a good program for me because Im more hands on, Matus said. Coming out of it, I think I have a better perspective on the industry.

I was already going to the school and (Levy CF adult education coordinator) Ms. (Leah) Gamble had told me and my wife about the program and I decided Id see what its about, take it for a spin, and it turned out to be pretty good, Randolph said. I learned a lot.

Bowers was also a student at CF when he learned about the program.

My family has been in the logging business for a long time, he said. So I figured if I go in I better get all the requirements I need.

Andrew McCutchen will remain the everyday center fielder even after Starling Marte rejoins the Pirates on July 18 after serving his suspension.

Manager Clint Hurdle revealed the decision Sunday, a day after he told McCutchen about it during a closed-door meeting.

On April 18, Marte was suspended 80 games by MLB for using steroids. On Sunday, he began a 15-day minor league rehab assignment with High-A Bradenton.

Marte is going to play left field and maybe (play) a game or two in center, in the minors, Hurdle said. Marte will come back (to the Pirates) as a left fielder.

Hurdle was asked if the move was made out of respect to McCutchen, who has enjoyed a renaissance at the plate and in the field during Marte's absence.

That's just where (Marte) needs to fit in, Hurdle said.

Last winter, Hurdle revamped the outfield alignment by moving Marte to center field and McCutchen to right. McCutchen reclaimed center when Marte was suspended.

We tried one thing, and it didn't work, McCutchen said. With everything that went on, it made it a little tougher to be able to do that. We have to go back to the drawing board, and now we're back to where we were in the past.

General manager Neal Huntington said McCutchen's defensive stats have improved over last season, when management forced him to play shallow in center.

His metrics are better this year, Huntington said. Part of that is we've pushed him back a little bit to play to his strengths and to his confidence, playing gap to gap.

After scuffling offensively in April and May, McCutchen batted .411 with six homers and a National League-leading 1.193 OPS in June.

Like I said a long time ago, I knew I was going to be better, McCutchen said. I expected to be better. And now I'm better. It's not a surprise for me. I just show up every day and get my work in. I don't think about anything else outside of where I hit in the order, where I play in the outfield. I'm just here and ready to play.

Marte's rehab plans

Before his first game with Bradenton, Marte spoke with media at LECOM Park. The Pirates provided an audio recording.

Marte said his suspension is the result of a mistake that I made, but did not get into specifics.

There's always something that can help, to move forward, always trying to be better, Marte said through a translator. But it's a mistake. I made that mistake. Now, I just want to move forward and help my team.

Later in the interview, Marte denied knowingly taking steroids and said the positive test result was a surprise to him.

It's not that anybody gave me anything, Marte said. It's something that I bought that might have induced this test positive. I was not aware that anything was in it.

Marte said he was told by MLB two weeks before the season began that he tested positive for Nandrolone, an anabolic steroid. That might account for his slow start Marte batted .241 in 13 games before his suspension was announced.

When you have issues and when you're thinking about something, it does impact the way your mind stays focused, Marte said. I'm not going to say 100 percent that my performance was impacted by that, but, at the time, I was worried. I had all of these things in the back of my mind.

Marte has played in several extended spring training games in addition to working out twice daily at Pirate City.

Conditioning-wise, he should be in a good spot, Huntington said. Baseball movement- and activity-wise, he should be in a good spot. It's now about speed of game.

Management wants Marte to play as many games as possible with Triple-A Indianapolis, starting sometime this week.

I anticipate him playing nine innings, full games, by the back half of next week, Hurdle said.

Cervelli on mend

Francisco Cervelli, who is on the disabled list recovering from a concussion, continues to do early work in the field. He has done some drills at shortstop, tutored by infield coach Joey Cora.

Cervelli will be back at catcher when he comes off the DL but might eventually be used at other positions. Cervelli has sustained at least eight head injuries while catching.

Although Huntington said changing roles is not a conversation we're having at this time, Hurdle indicated it could be mulled in the future.

He wants to ignite (off the DL) from behind the plate, Hurdle said. The next conversation can be, How can we look at some other options?'

There remains no timetable for when Cervelli will be activated.

We've told Francisco his return needs to be when he is healthy, confident and comfortable and not a day before that, Huntington said.

Dominican prospect signs

On the first day of the two-week international signing period, the Pirates came to terms with outfielder Juan Pie, 16, of the Dominican Republic. Pie got a $500,000 signing bonus.

A left-handed batter, Pie (6-foot-2, 170 pounds) has been rated by evaluators as having average speed and an average arm.

We love the bat, Huntington said. There is a frame for growth and additional strength, but, primarily, we liked the bat attributes.

CEDAR FALLS -- Isabel Villa and Crystal Spencer are the recipients of the 2017 Transition Scholarships to the University of Northern Iowa.

These $1,000 scholarships are sponsored by the Cedar Falls affiliate of the American Association of University Women.

Villa has completed an associate of applied science degree in police science and will also complete an associate of arts degree at Hawkeye Community College this spring. She is an honor student at HCC. At the University of Northern Iowa, she plans to major in criminology. Villa, who was brought to the U.S. from Mexico as a child, now lives in Waterloo and is the mother of four children aged 2 months to 13 years.

Spencer of Waverly will transfer from HCC to UNI to major in music. She plans a graduate degree in music therapy. She enjoys both vocal and instrumental music, including church choir, piano, guitar, and ukulele. She has volunteered as church liturgist and has also participated in community theater in Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Spencer is a native of South Korea.

Transition Scholarships are awarded in the spring to non-traditional female students currently attending HCC who will enroll in at least six credit hours at UNI in the fall.

ST. LOUIS - After receiving injections to help with their respective injuries, both Dexter Fowler and Kevin Siegrist have improved to a point that the St. Louis Cardinals believe their time on the disabled list will be minimal.

My understanding, as of right now, theyre both progressing and I think we have some optimism on this being 10 days, shared President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.

Siegrist (cervical spine sprain) is expected to resume baseball activity this weekend, while Fowler (bone spur) is working out but not necessarily with baseball drills as he is still keeping pressure off of his right heel.

Doctors have not advised on any restrictions or the need to move Fowler to a different position, but the question was raised if from a defensive standpoint a corner slot could be in the future.

Anytime you sign a free agent of his magnitude and you bring him in to do a job, its very delicate to start talking about moving off, answered Mozeliak. Clearly, you want to do whats best for the team and finding ways to winand theres no doubt when you look at the past few days, with Tommy Pham, hes made some excellent catches.

Hes obviously had a very positive impact on this team. So we have some time to sort of decide what that next step looks like and Im sure all of us on the decision team will sit down and talk about it, but we havent done that yet.

Actually Pham, Randal Grichuk, and Stephen Piscotty have all recently had highlight reel catches in the outfield. But since his recall on May 5th, Pham has been a pretty consistent difference at the plateposting a .372 OBP, with 25 RBIs and 9 stolen bases 196 plate appearances.

But with various injuries taking him out of the lineup in the past, how hard is it to forecast the future for Pham?

I dont think Tommys been one of those guys thats been hard to figure out, said Mozeliak. The biggest things with players is sort of consistency, right? The thing about Tommy is theres times hes electric and exciting. And theres other times, its just not going. I think thats hard to manage, if you will. Clearly, his impact right now has been very positive.

For everybody thats worried that he might be going away anytime soon, I wouldnt be. I think a lot of our recent success is due to him.

C.F. Mller to Lead Design of Project Replacing Alison and Peter Smithsons Robin Hood Gardens

The Swan Housing Association has announced the appointment of Danish firm C.F. Mller to join Haworth Tompkins and Metropolitan Workshopin designing housing projects for the Blackwall Reach regeneration plan, a 300 million redevelopment effort which will replace Alison and Peter Smithsons Brutalist east London estate, Robin Hood Gardens.

As leaders of Phase 3 of the plan, C.F. Mller will design housing for the eastern portion of the site. A total of 330 one- to five-bedroom residential units, half of which have been designated as affordable, will be located within a courtyard block complex at the edge of an existing garden mound one of the few elements of the original estate that will be retained. The garden is planned to be replanted and renamed the Millennium Green.

Selected from a shortlist of five practices, C. F. Mller was praised by Swan for their focus on inside out design that places priority of the buildings residents.

We were very impressed by their inside out approach to design. C.F. Mller really focused on the people who will live in these new homes and the relationship of the homes to the public realm, said Swans Executive Director of Regeneration and Development, Geoff Pearce. They were passionate about ensuring we deliver human scale street scenes and links into the landscape to offset the impact of the busy external environment, which is close to the Blackwall Tunnel.

As a regeneration team, we felt strongly the C. F. Mller team would bring a fresh and positive approach to the next phase of Blackwall Reach and we are delighted to be able to continue and further develop the positive working relationship which has proved so productive in relation to their work for us on our regeneration of Laindon Shopping Centre.

C.F. Mller will continue to develop the early schemes shown in renderings released with the news, working with development partners and the community to create an inclusive design.

Our approach to this challenging project is to develop an architectural and placemaking response with the focus on designing the best possible new homes within a challenging location, said Rolf Nielsen, Associate Partner at C.F. Mller.

In total, the Blackwall Reach Regeneration Project will create 1,500 apartments and a variety of public spaces including community centers, shops, cafes and a mosque. Phase 1 of the project is already underway with 98 out of 242 homes, the mosque, a community center and an extension to an existing school already constructed. Phase 2 is expected to begin shortly, which will add 242 further homes in four residential buildings designed by Metropolitan Workshop and Haworth Tompkins.

Several notable architects, Richard Rogers, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Robert Venturi and Simon Smithson (a partner at RSHP and son of Alison and Peter Smithson), had earlier petitioned to save Robin Hood Gardens from demolition, but the building was denied historic listing in 2015.
