CF Industries: Investors Likely To See Profits Ramp Up – Seeking Alpha
Posted: March 8, 2022 at 10:35 pm
BanksPhotos/iStock via Getty Images
CF Industries (CF) is extremely well-positioned to benefit from a perfect storm that is impacting its competitors.
You have a multi-factorial landscape that is driving CF Industries' revenues and profits to rapidly increase in the near term. There's the invasion of Ukraine that's destabilizing energy prices in Europe, strong agricultural demand, and high industrial use of nitrogen too.
This is all leading to a very strong demand for nitrogen, and CF Industries is very well positioned to benefit from this set up.
This is an attractive investment worth considering.
As you can see above, CF Industries' stock had been very volatile over the past 5 years, but ultimately it had gone nowhere fast.
In fact, even when CF Industries announced in December that it's raising its EBITDA guidance for 2021, the market didn't take a lot of notice, with the share price hardly moving over the next several days after the initial pop of 3% on the back of the announcement.
In short, investors were sleepy and unwilling to give CF much notice. However, that's now about to change.
CF Industries revenues growth rates
Looking back over the past decade, CF Industries has typically seen midteens swings in its topline, either up or down. Over the past decade, never has CF Industries reported triple-digits growth rates as it has just reported during Q4 2021.
Looking ahead to 2022, we are amidst a perfect storm, where global nitrogen inventory is low, demand is high, and the competition isn't able to feasibly produce enough fertilizer.
CF Industries revenue consensus
As you can see above, analysts are now upwards revising their model and I expect that over the next few days and weeks, we are going to see plentiful of further upwards revisions to its revenue estimates.
Natural gas is the principal raw material and primary fuel source used in the ammonia production process of nitrogen. Moreover, as has been widely reported, gas prices in Europe have spiked on the back of the invasion of Ukraine, and this has disrupted energy markets in Europe.
Meanwhile, gas prices in the US haven't meaningfully increased.
Given that natural gas accounts for approximately 40% of total production costs for nitrogen products, if gas prices increase in Europe, that means competitors will have to increase the prices of nitrogen products.
Consequently, in the US, CF Industries will also be able to raise its own costs, without having to meaningfully increase its input costs. This is going to lead to a bounty for shareholders.
Before discussing CF Industries' profitability, let's spend a moment on its balance sheet. For the past 3 years, the company has not accessed its revolver. Similarly, CF Industries exited Q4 2021 with the $750 million still undrawn.
CF Industries holds $1.6 billion in cash. That's offset by $3.3 billion of debt. This brings its net debt position to $1.7 billion, compared with $3.3 billion in the same period a year ago. Thus, consider this, during the past twelve months, CF Industries has seen its balance sheet improve its flexibility by more than $1.5 billion.
In Q4 of last year, free cash flow was approximately $200 million, while this time around free cash flow was approximately $1350 million, an increase of approximately 6.7x relative to the same period a year ago.
Now consider the following, for Q3 2021, CF Industries' free cash flow was approximately $300 million. Then, Q4 2021 saw its free cash flow soar to slightly over $1.1 billion.
To think about this from a different perspective, note the following, during the trailing 12 months that ended in Q3 2021, CF Industries' free cash flow reached $1 billion, and then, during the 90 day period that ended in December 2021, CF Industries reported slightly more free cash flow than during that 12-month period.
This demonstrates the impressive amount of operating leverage inherent in the business.
It's extremely difficult to value CF Industries because it very much depends on how long macro factors continue to drive its bottom-line profitability. In the same way that absolutely nobody could have predicted the disruption that COVID caused, or the invasion of Ukraine would take place, it's difficult to forecast how long these disruptions may last.
Presently, analysts expect that CF Industries will enter a more normalized environment starting in 2023, but these are wild guesses. Nevertheless, using those estimates the stock is priced at approximately 15x its 2023 EPS figures.
On the other hand, meaningful fertilizer manufacturing capacity could come online from outside the US faster than expected. This would rapidly increase fertilizer supply crushing average selling prices.
On the other hand, with global supply chains in chaos, as well as political uncertainty, even on the back of increased demand, it could take a while for supply to catch up with demand.
When investing, it's nice to invest alongside management that has a lot of skin in the game. CF Industries' management has some skin in the game. With total insider ownership averaging around 2%, which for a company with a market cap of $19 billion, we are talking about approximately $380 million of equity.
Thus, given that a rising tide lifts all boats, even if management didn't have enough skin in the game this is still likely to bring shareholders a bounty of profits.
This investment certainly looks interesting. Whatever you decide, good luck and happy investing.

Canada will send CF-18 fighter jets to Romania starting this summer, the Romanian foreign affairs minister announced Monday.

Canada will resume the air policing activity in Romania in July, foreign affairs minister Bogdan Aurescu said Monday. He made the announcement after meeting with his Canadian counterpart Melanie Joly.
Six CF-18 fighter jets will be sent to Romania.
We are bringing six CF-18s to Romania, for air patrol, starting in July, Joly said at a joint press conference. These (aircraft) will be there, with military personnel that can reach 200 people.
Canada previously had six CF-18s and 140 personnel in Romania but they left in December. The fighter jets from that deployment were there from September to December 2021.
No timeline was released on how long the latest CF-18 fighter jet deployment would last in Romania.
This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.
But Joly pointed out the aircraft are part of Canadas response to Russias invasion of Ukraine and its support of NATO. We have increased our presence on the eastern flank and we are willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that the entire eastern flank and especially Romania are well protected, she explained to journalists.
Jolys announcement from this morning appears to have come as a surprise to the Royal Canadian Air Force. Even after Jolys announcement, the RCAF released a statement to this newspaper that while there is currently no request or requirement for CF-18 Hornets to deploy domestically or outside of Canada, we are managing our training commitments accordingly to be prepared for any potential missions in support of the Government of Canada.

There were plans to send CF-18s, along with around 150 Canadian military personnel, later this month to Florida to take part in fighter jet training with U.S. forces. The exercise, which was to have involved 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron from 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alta., has now been cancelled, the RCAF confirmed to this newspaper Monday.
Canada is also sending an artillery battery and 120 soldiers to Latvia at the end of this month as part of efforts to contribute to NATO in response to the Russian invasion.
HMCS Halifax will also leave Canada to bolster NATO forces in the Mediterranean Sea but that frigate wont leave until towards the end of March. It wont be in the region until sometime in April, according to the Department of National Defence. However, defence officials say the ship will not venture into the Black Sea.

Twenty-five military personnel from an electronic warfare unit have also been assigned to Latvia. Members from 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment from Kingston, Ont., were already deployed to Latvia as part of a bi-annual technical assistance visit, which began in early January 2022, said National Defence spokesman Dan Le Bouthillier said. They were expected to finish their mission by the end of March. But they will continue to stay in Latvia for the foreseeable future, Le Bouthillier said.
The Canadian Forces has also earmarked two C-130J aircraft for NATO use in transporting equipment to Poland. The Canadian military will also be providing 100 anti-tank weapons plus 2,000 rounds of ammunition to Ukraine as well as more protective vests for troops. No details on when the equipment will reach Ukraine were released for security reasons.

In addition, Liberal cabinet ministers also announced that Canada would provide $25 million in non-lethal aid. But that gear, which includes helmets, gas masks and night vision goggles, wont come from Canadian Forces equipment inventory. Instead, the Canadian governments procurement system will buy the equipment from various companies and suppliers.
Global Affairs Canada has declined to answer questions on that donation but some industry officials say there are already problems buying the needed gear.

Husein Kadimagomaev Lived In The Gym For 2 Months Ahead Of BRAVE CF Return – FightBook MMA
Posted: at 10:35 pm
Despite tasting the first loss of his MMA run, Kadimagomaev gained a new perspective on his priorities as a competitor in the sport.
Undeterred, Kadimagomaev is staying positive and plans to use the lessons he learned in his most recent setback.
He makes his return to action on Friday, March 11 against Agshin Babaev of Azerbaijan on the supporting card of BRAVE CF 57, which emanates from the Khalifa Sports City Arena in Isa Town, Bahrain.
I prepared for two months. I lived in the gym, and I am ready, Kadimagomaev declared.
Both men were supposed to face each other at BRAVE CF 52: Bad Blood in August 2021, but the bout didnt push through as Babaev failed to secure a visa going to Milan, Italy in time for the fight.
You can ask everybody, everybody is waiting for this fight, the Swiss quipped.
Although he will share a cage opposite a fighter with a 29-match experience, Kadimagomaev is confident he can put Babaev in danger wherever the fight goes.
I improved my striking, my wrestling, everything, and Im going to show everything in the fight, he said. On March 11, I will be victorious.

Orlando City vs. CF Montreal: Player Grades and Man of the Match – The Mane Land
Posted: February 28, 2022 at 8:07 pm
Orlando City got its 2022 MLS campaign off to a great start, defeating CF Montreal 2-0. Goals by Alexandre Pato and Benji Michel led the way as the Lions won their first season opener since 2017.
Lets take a look at how each player performed for the Lions.
GK, Pedro Gallese, 7 The Lions starting goalkeeper didnt have a whole lot to do in this game, only facing two shots on target. However, he did well throughout the game coming off his line to collect balls before the attacker could reach it. Additionally, Galleses distribution was solid, successfully completing seven of his nine long balls. He only had a pair of saves, but must be given credit for recording his first clean sheet of the season.
D, Joao Moutinho, 6 Moutinhos performance didnt stand out in this game, but thats not necessarily a bad thing. While Ruan often pushed forward on the right, Moutinho stayed back more than he did much of last year, putting himself in a better position to defend any counter attacks. He ended the game with one clearance, one blocked shot, and three fouls defensively. He completed 81.5% of his 54 passes and had one key pass in the attack. However, most importantly, Montreal wasnt able to do much on that side because of the left backs strong play.
D, Robin Jansson, 6 Jansson was unquestionably the man of the first half in this game. The Swede was fantastic defending early when the Lions werent able to get anything going offensively. He ended the game with two tackles and four clearances. Additionally, he completed 91.5% of his 47 passes, including four accurate long balls.
Had Jansson finished the game on the field, his grade wouldve been higher. However, he made an unnecessary tactical foul in the 81st minute, resulting in a red card. Despite the fact that his first caution was questionable, Jansson knew he was on a yellow and there were defenders behind him. The Lions were up a man at the time and the sending off put undue pressure on the team to hold on for the win.
D, Antonio Carlos, 7.5 Carlos was absent for much of preseason as he had trouble getting his visa to re-enter the country, but showed how important he is to this team. The Brazilian was fantastic alongside Jansson. Carlos had two tackles, one interception, and a team-leading nine clearances. He also won two aerial balls, tied for the team lead. Going forward, he completed 93% of his 43 passes, including completing four of his five long balls.
D, Ruan, 6.5 Ruan spent much of the game pushing forward into the attack, something thats become common since he joined the team. He completed 81.1% of his 37 passes and was accurate in one of his three crosses. His biggest contribution was delivering the low cross into the box that led to Patos opening goal, although some bad defending by Montreal helped.
Defensively, Ruan didnt record any tackles or interceptions, but had two clearances. The lack of defensive stats was because Ruan wasnt able to get back much. Instead, he went down frequently in the attack, forcing Cesar Araujo to cover for him. Still, it was a solid game by the Lions first-choice right back.
MF, Andres Perea, 5.5 It wasnt a bad game by Perea but he wasnt as involved as Head Coach Oscar Pareja probably wouldve liked. The 21-year-old only completed 83.3% of his 24 passes, allowing Montreal to break on multiple counter attacks during the first half. Defensively, Perea only recorded one tackle. The young midfielder was substituted for Junior Urso at halftime.
MF, Cesar Araujo, 6 Araujo was very active in his first MLS game, recording 61 touches, tied for most on the team alongside Moutinho. He completed 88.5% of his 52 passes and got a shot off that went off-target. Defensively, Araujo didnt have any tackles, but did have two interceptions and picked up a yellow card in 90 minutes of action.
MF, Benji Michel, 6.5 The Orlando City Homegrown Player did well in his first start of the season. He only had 23 touches on the left, but completed 92.3% of his 13 passes. More importantly, Michel put away his only shot of the match in the 59th minute, giving the Lions a commanding 2-0 lead.
MF, Mauricio Pereyra, 6.5 Pereyra didnt have the most impactful 75 minutes, only recording 42 touches despite being the number 10 on a team that won 2-0. He completed 83.3% of his 36 passes, including the pass to find Ruan in a dangerous area on the teams first goal and assisting on the second. His one shot was off-target. He also completed all four of his long passes, something of importance considering how deep he tends to play.
MF, Facundo Torres, 6 The 21-year-old Uruguayan played well in this game but didnt have the impact many had hoped. He was on the ball slightly more than Pereyra, recording 49 touches, and only completed 82.4% of his 34 passes. Playing on the right, he did have seven crosses, but only one reached its target. Additionally, he got two shots off, but both were off target. He was involved in the buildup on the opening goal.
F, Alexandre Pato, 7.5 (MotM) Pato missed most of last year after he was injured in the 2021 season opener against Atlanta. However, the Lions saw what Pato can give the team in this game. Playing alone up top, Pato was excellent. He only completed 73.3% of his 15 passes, but was involved and recorded 25 touches.
Pato was terrific in the attack, putting two of his three shots on target and scoring his first goal in MLS. A surprising part of Patos game was his hold-up play. The forward is usually best when the ball is at his feet, but the 5-foot-9 striker was excellent with his back to goal. He was able to win clearances and shield defenders until other attackers could catch up to the play.
MF, Junior Urso (46), 6 Junior Urso came on at halftime for Perea in the central defensive midfield. He had five fewer touches (25) than Perea and only completed 77.8% of his 18 passes. However, Urso was more active defensively, recording one tackle and two interceptions. Additionally, he recorded a secondary assist in the build-up to Michels goal, starting the play by intercepting a goal kick.
F, Ercan Kara (69), 5 Kara came off the bench for the final 21 minutes after recovering from a preseason injury. The new Designated Player didnt have the biggest impact, only recording seven touches and completing one of his three passes. He also didnt get any shots off.
Karas game couldve been better when he was sent through late, but he was taken down before he could reach the ball. Its arguable that it shouldve been Montreals second red card as he was taken down by the last defender, but the referee only issued a caution.
F, Silvester van der Water (76), 5 Similar to Kara, van der Water didnt do much in his 14 minutes. Coming on late for energy, the Dutch attacker only touched the ball seven times and completed two of his three passes. He did well to pull the ball back and maintain possession when it was needed, but his one incomplete pass was an attempted switch that gave the ball right back to Montreal.
MF, Sebas Mendez (76), 6 Mendez was brought on for defensive purposes and to maintain possession. He did much more with his nine touches than other substitutes, successfully completing all seven passes. He also recorded a clearance, which was part of his role as the Lions looked to hold onto their late 2-0 lead.
D, Rodrigo Schlegel (83), 6 Schlegel may not have expected to enter the game down the stretch, but Janssons second yellow card forced the Argentine to come on at center back. He wasnt forced to make any defensive plays in his late appearance, but did complete all three of his passes, getting the ball out of the back.

The $100 CF Baseball Card Starter Kit One-Sheet Collections – Beckett Media, LLC
Posted: at 8:07 pm
For many, nostalgia remains the driving force behind baseball card collecting, and thats how I arrived at the idea of One-Sheet Collections.
Its a simple concept with infinite possibilities.
Take a single nine-pocket sheet and a reasonable $100 budget, and build a nine-card collection with a unifying theme.
Continuing on with our recent theme, Im once again focusing on a specific position and building a nine-card starter pack that can serve as a foundation for a collection specific to one spot on the field.
Ive already done the catchers, first basemen, second basemen, third basemen and shortstops. Now its time for the center fielders. What nine cards focusing solely on the center field position would you buy with a $100 budget?
Heres what I picked:
From the time he burst onto the scene to finish third in AL Rookie of the Year voting in 1984, Kirby Puckett was a fan favorite for the Minnesota Twins. Over the course of his 12-year career, he hit .318/.360/.477 with 2,304 hits, 207 home runs and 1,084 RBI. He was a 10-time All-Star, six-time Gold Glove winner, and he won a pair of World Series rings.
His 1985 Topps Rookie Card is one of the iconic cards of that decade, though he also has rookies in the 1985 Donruss and Fleer sets. His 1984 Fleer Update XRC is his most sought after early card, but it doesnt fit the budget here.
Buy on:
Ken Griffey Jr. launched 630 home runs during his storied career, and he was the face of the sport and a legitimate pop culture figure throughout the 1990s. He was a 13-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove winner, and hes a strong contender for the title of coolest player in MLB history.
There is little question Griffeys 1989 Upper Deck #1 is the most recognizable of his six different Rookie Cards, but his Donruss Rated Rookie is legendary in its own right and fits comfortably into our $100 budget.
Buy on:
Its an absolute crime that Kenny Lofton only received 3.2 percent of the vote in his one and only year on the Hall of Fame ballot. The best leadoff hitter of the 1990s, he set the table for some stacked Cleveland lineups, piling up 2,428 hits and 622 steals in 17 seasons. His 68.4 WAR ranks ninth all-time among center fielders.
Buy on:
Jim Edmonds is one of just five center fielders in MLB history to hit 40 home runs and win a Gold Glove in the same season. He did it in 2000 and 2004, joining Willie Mays (x4), Ken Griffey Jr. (x4), Andruw Jones (x2) and Carlos Beltran (x1) in accomplishing the feat. He won eight Gold Gloves total and hit 393 home runs in 17 seasons.
A seventh-round pick in 1988, his Rookie Cards didnt come until five years later when he was featured in the 1993 Topps and 1993 Ultra base sets, as well as the 1993 Fleer Final Edition update set.
Buy on:
The Minnesota Twins selected Torii Hunter with the No. 20 pick in the 1993 draft out of high school, and he didnt become an everyday player in the majors until eight years later. Despite being something of a late-bloomer, he still finished with 353 home runs, 1,391 RBI and 50.7 WAR while winning nine Gold Gloves.
While his first Topps card didnt come until 2000, he has Rookie Cards in the 1994 Bowman, Pinnacle and Score sets, and the Bowman is the most valuable of the bunch with a modest $5 price tag.
Buy on:
The No. 1 prospect in baseball at the start of the 1996 and 1997 seasons, Andruw Jones is one of the most hyped teenagers in the history of the sport. With 10 Gold Gloves, 434 home runs and 62.7 WAR in 17 seasons, he belongs in Cooperstown, and his voting total is trending in the right direction with five years left on the ballot.
The 1995 Bowman and Bowmans Best sets contain the only Rookie Cards of the former Atlanta Braves star. His first Topps card came the following year when he was featured alongside Vladimir Guerrero on a prospects card.
Buy on:
Carlos Beltran burst onto the scene in 1999, hitting .293/.337/.454 with 22 home runs, 108 RBI and 27 steals to win AL Rookie of the Year. He finished his 20-year career with 435 home runs and 315 steals, making him one of only eight members of the 300/300 club.
His only true Rookie Card is in the 1995 Topps Traded set, and its an error card with the photos of Beltran and fellow Royals prospect Juan LeBron mixed up. Rather than try to decide which of those two cards is the best representation of him, weve opted for his 1st Bowman card in the 1997 Bowman set.
Buy on:
Entering his age-30 season, Mike Trout has already tallied 310 home runs, 203 steals and a staggering 76.1 WAR. He is a three-time AL MVP, nine-time All-Star, and simply put the best player on the planet. If he retired tomorrow, hed be a first-ballot Hall of Famer.
Our $100 budget makes it impossible to target any early Trout card, including his 2001 Topps Update Rookie Card. However, his 2013 Topps base card with the gold Rookie Cup is a cost-effective alternative for the sake of this collection.
Buy on:
Luis Robert checks all the boxes to be baseballs next superstar in center field. The 24-year-old was slowed by injuries last year, but he still hit .338/.378/.567 with 36 extra-base hits and 3.6 WAR in only 68 games.
The headlining rookie in 2020 products, he has 62 different Rookie Cards in total in the Beckett database. His Topps flagship rookie fits the budget here, but Ive opted instead for his Donruss Optic rookie with the Rated Rookie logo.
Buy on:

Alkalosis-induced hypoventilation in cystic fibrosis: The importance of efficient renal adaptation – pnas.org
Posted: February 17, 2022 at 7:34 am
Significance
In conditions when our blood experiences alkalosis, a pronounced kidney response is initiated causing a marked increase of urine base excretion. We recently discovered the cellular physiology of this, which employs fast activation of the base-secreting -intercalated cells of the collecting duct. This function is fully dependent on the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), the anion channel defective in CF. Hence, CF patients and mice cannot efficiently excrete an acute base load. Here, we find that the inability of fast urinary base removal in the CF mouse model causes a marked inhibition of ventilation. This study provides physiological insights into acidbase regulation and may have important implications for CF patients who are already burdened with reduced lung function.
The lungs and kidneys are pivotal organs in the regulation of body acidbase homeostasis. In cystic fibrosis (CF), the impaired renal ability to excrete an excess amount of HCO3 into the urine leads to metabolic alkalosis [P. Berg etal., J. Am. Soc. Nephrol. 31, 17111727 (2020); F. Al-Ghimlas, M. E. Faughnan, E. Tullis, Open Respir. Med. J. 6, 5962 (2012)]. This is caused by defective HCO3 secretion in the -intercalated cells of the collecting duct that requires both the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) and pendrin for normal function [P. Berg etal., J. Am. Soc. Nephrol. 31, 17111727 (2020)]. We studied the ventilatory consequences of acute oral base loading in normal, pendrin knockout (KO), and CFTR KO mice. In wild-type mice, oral base loading induced a dose-dependent metabolic alkalosis, fast urinary removal of base, and a moderate base load did not perturb ventilation. In contrast, CFTR and pendrin KO mice, which are unable to rapidly excrete excess base into the urine, developed a marked and transient depression of ventilation when subjected to the same base load. Therefore, swift renal base elimination in response to an acute oral base load is a necessary physiological function to avoid ventilatory depression. The transient urinary alkalization in the postprandial state is suggested to have evolved for proactive avoidance of hypoventilation. In CF, metabolic alkalosis may contribute to the commonly reduced lung function via a suppression of ventilatory drive.

Hypertonic Saline Preventive Inhalation in Cystic Fibrosis Infants (PRESIS). A Double-Blind, Randomized Con… – Physician’s Weekly
Posted: at 7:34 am
For a study, it was determined that because cystic fibrosis (CF) lung illness developed in childhood, early treatment may be the most beneficial. The lung clearance index (LCI) and chest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) emerged as promising endpoints for early CF lung damage; nevertheless, they were evaluating a few randomized controlled trials on the safety and efficacy of preventative treatments in newborns with CF. To assess the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of hypertonic saline (HS) with isotonic saline (IS) preventive inhalation in infants with CF, using LCI and MRI as end measures. They assigned 42 babies with CF under four months to twice-daily inhalation of 6% HS (n=21) or 0.9% IS (n=21) for 52 weeks across five sites in this randomized, double-blind, controlled experiment.
Infants with CF tolerated HS and IS inhalation well, and the number of adverse events did not differ between groups (P=0.49). Infants with CF treated with HS (0.6) had a greater change in LCI from baseline to Week 52 than those treated with IS (0.1; P<0.05). Furthermore, weight gain was better in CF infants treated with HS (P<0.05), but pulmonary exacerbations and chest MRI ratings were not different between the HS and were groups. In newborns with CF, preventive inhalation with HS started in the first months of life was found to be safe and well-tolerated, with improvements in LCI and weight gain. The findings show the viability of LCI as a tool.
