Most CBD Beverages Contain Less CBD Than Advertised [Study] – HealthMJ
Posted: September 18, 2020 at 1:20 am
CBD beverages are exploding with popularity. Unfortunately, a CBD watchdog just released a study showing many CBD beverages are inaccurately labeled.
Tel Aviv, Israel-based CBD analysis company Leafreport tested 22 CBD-infused beverages for their ingredients and dosages. The company aims to bring added transparency to the CBD space, helping consumers make smarter choices about which CBD beverages to buy.
Tests were performed by Canalysis Laboratories under the direction of Leafreport. You can view the full report here at LeafReport.com.
According to Leafreport, a shocking 54% of CBD beverages contain less CBD than advertised. Meanwhile, two CBD beverages claimed to contain 5mg to 25mg of CBD yet contained no CBD at all.
Key findings from the study include:
There was no positive association between a companys overall reputation and their test results, which means that the industrys leading CBD brands were not more likely to score well on the test both well-known and lesser-known CBD companies scored poorly for labeling. A CBD beverage from American Shaman, for example, had 21% higher CBD levels than advertised.
Heres how Lital Shafir, head of product at Leafreport, explained the results of the study in a press release:
This is in line with our expectations because CBD beverages are difficult to formulate and contain relatively small amounts of CBD, which means that variations of even a few milligrams can have a big effect.
After testing each CBD beverage, Leafreport ranked beverages from A (Excellent) to F (Fail). Only 4 products scored an A, which means they were within 10% of what was stated on the label. 14 products (64% of the tested beverages) scored an F, which means they contained 30% more or less than the advertised amount of CBD (or no CBD at all).
According to Leafreports test, two popular CBD products contained no CBD whatsoever. In other words, these companies were selling CBD beverages that contained no actual amount of CBD.
The two CBD beverages with no CBD include:
Blue Label Naturals claims their CBD Water contains 5mg of CBD per bottle when it actually contained 0mg of CBD. Sativa CBD Water, meanwhile, claimed to contain 25mg of CBD (!) per bottle when it actually contained zero.
Other significant offenders for mislabeling included:
Even some of the industrys best-known companies were found to be inaccurately labeled. CBD American Shamans Sparkling Watermelon Water, for example, contained 21% more CBD Than advertised.
A rare few CBD beverages contained 10% of the advertised amount of CBD, which is an acceptable range.
Products that contained close to the advertised amount of CBD included:
Most of the tested beverages, meanwhile, had disappointingly inaccurate labels.
This isnt the first time Leafreport has revealed shocking discrepancies with CBD labeling.
In a separate study, Leafreport showed similarly disappointing results with CBD oils. Leafreport found that some of the leading CBD oil brands frequently lied about their ingredients and dosages.
CBD industry experts claim a 10% discrepancy is acceptable, yet most tested CBD oils and beverages dont even meet these generous limits.
Moving forward, Leafreport aims to continue highlighting problems within the CBD space:
The CBD industry is completely unregulated and there have been many cases of companies selling products that contain little to no CBD. That's why third-party testing is important for brands in this industry.
Any growing industry faces regulatory challenges, and the CBD space is no exception.
Thanks to Leafreport, we can see which CBD beverages are playing by the rules and which ones are taking advantage of an unregulated CBD space.

CBD and Caffeine: Why You Should Mix CBD With Your Morning Coffee? – Weed News
Posted: at 1:20 am
Mixing CBD and coffee is a fast-growing trend among CBD oil users and for a good reason.
Its more than just a commercial trend; there are real benefits to mixing CBD with coffee. The calming effects of CBD help reduce the unwanted side-effects of caffeine, such as anxiety and jitteriness. At the same time, CBD is able to enhance the mental alertness provided by your cup of morning coffee.
Would you try this win-win combo yourself?
Then youve come to the right place. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about mixing CBD and caffeine. Well cover the potential benefits, go over proper dosing, and share a few tips and tricks for using this combination to the fullest.
Coffee is by far the most popular stimulant brewed in the world. According to various estimates, people consume over 2.2 billion cups of coffee every day.
Coffee is praised for its ability to enhance mental alertness, sharpen focus, and reduce tiredness all of which are attributed to its caffeine content.
Caffeine is the active ingredient in coffee. When used responsibly and in moderation, caffeine is a versatile tool for improving our productivity throughout the day. However, our obsession with productivity has resulted in excessive caffeine consumption.
We drink coffee to wake ourselves up early in the morning; we drink it throughout the day to get better results at work; finally, we use caffeine to be able to work longer hours by fooling the brain that were not tired.
Abusing caffeine is far from beneficial.
Most coffee drinkers have experienced its signature side-effects after having one espresso too many.
Excessive amounts of caffeine can make us feel jittery and anxious. Moreover, some people can even feel their hearts pounding out of their chests or skipping beats.
All of these adverse effects actually impair our ability to stay productive acting against the very reason for drinking coffee.
This is where CBD comes into play. Research has shown that CBD can enhance the health benefits of caffeine while counteracting the aforementioned side effects.
Wondering why so many people add CBD to their morning Coffee?
Here are the benefits that may convince you to jump on the bandwagon:
Caffeine makes us more alert by acting on certain neurotransmitters in the brain. CBD can further bolster this sensation by interacting with the same neurotransmitters responsible for mental stimulation.
One of the most important neurotransmitters in the brain that controls mental alertness is adenosine.
More adenosine in your system slows down the communication between neurons. This can make you feel sloppy and tired. As we move toward the end of the day, adenosine builds up to help us relax and fall asleep at night.
As caffeine binds to the adenosine receptors itself it blocks the access to those receptors, eventually preventing adenosine from working as intended hence the increased mental alertness (1).
The relationship between CBD and adenosine is more complex than it is with caffeine. While caffeine is considered an agonist of adenosine, CBD is its modulator. In other words, CBD improves the efficacy of the adenosine receptors instead of inducing its effects through direct stimulation.
Other coffee-enhancing effects of CBD may be felt through its interaction with serotonin a neurotransmitter responsible for feelings of happiness and euphoria. Increased serotonin levels are associated with greater motivation and a heightened sense of well-being (2).
CBD is best known for its ability to reduce anxiety. CBD is a very good anti-anxiety agent because it operates on several individual mechanisms to achieve this state of mind rather than relying on one molecular pathway.
Long story short, CBD offers the following benefits for those suffering from anxiety:
All of the above effects work together to bring significant relief from anxiety which is the reason why so many people are turning to CBD oil for anxiety and depression.
Research has also highlighted the anxiolytic benefits of CBD in various experimental models (3, 4). Anecdotal evidence from CBD oil users supports these findings something were a part of as well.
Almost every substance that you ingest needs to be metabolized by the liver in order to be flushed from the body.
The liver uses a system of specialized enzymes (CYP) enzymes to perform its function and disassemble active ingredients in drugs, cells by-products, and other compounds in our bloodstream.
Caffeine and CBD share a structure similar enough to require the same system of enzymes to process them.
Similar to other organs, the livers ability to metabolize substances is limited, so if theres a sudden influx of compounds like CBD and caffeine, the liver gets informed about that; it wont process these compounds faster than it can.
Think about this mechanism as of the rush hour traffic. Once enough cars enter the road, it will eventually turn into gridlock. Traffic to the liver for metabolism is also slowed down.
In essence, CBD and caffeine extend the duration of effects for each other.
Now that weve established the benefits of a CBD-and-caffeine combo, lets take a look at how you can combine CBD with your morning coffee on top of other creative ways to benefit from both compounds.
Bulletproof coffee consists of coffee and a source of fat usually clarified butter from grass-fed cows or MCT oil from coconuts.
The brew has become particularly popular among those on the ketogenic diet for inducing a metabolic state of ketosis, where the body uses fats stored in the body as the source of energy.
The fat in bulletproof coffee is like a coal-based fuel; it burns relatively hot but lasts a long time. Sugar, on the other hand, is like jet fuel, burning very hot but lasting equally short.
This is also a great brew for a CBD infusion. Adding CBD oil to a bulletproof coffee will cause it to dissolve perfectly in the fats in your drink. If you try to add CBD oil to a regular coffee, it will just float on the top of your mug.
CBD is an excellent ingredient in the caffeinated nutritional stack. Just make sure you carefully dose each compound. Most people take around 100 400 mg of caffeine per day, which makes for 1 4 cups of coffee, whereas the average dose of CBD ranges from 20 150 mg daily.
Vaping is the most effective way to take CBD oil along with your morning coffee. Its the contemporary version of the evergreen wake-and-bake routine, except for the fact theres no smoke in your combo.
Vaping CBD may not suit everybody, but it offers the highest bioavailability of all CBD formats out there. It can be combined easily with a morning espresso, and only takes a few seconds. Vaping also allows the user to get the right dosage and is the fastest way to experience the health benefits of CBD.
Vaping is especially useful when it comes to counteracting the coffee-induced anxiety and jitteriness.
As more people are starting to realize the benefits of mixing CBD and caffeine, some creative entrepreneurial souls have come up with CBD-infused coffee. This product is the most convenient way to combine CBD with coffee all you need to do is brew the coffee as you normally would and youll get CBD in your beverage.
The only concern about this method is that its difficult to determine the exact dose of CBD taken with each cup unless the company specifically provides dosage instructions on the bag. But even when they do, its not an accurate way to measure out the desired amount of CBD.
If you want to get the best CBD coffee out there, look for products containing full-spectrum hemp extract with good-quality coffee beans. There are plenty of CBD-infused coffees on the market that use decent CBD oil, but the coffee often leaves a lot to be desired.
We prefer to drink CBD coffee from brands that put equal care into the quality of both ingredients.
CBD is one of the two major cannabinoids secreted in the flowers of mature cannabis plants. Cannabis has been present in the history of medicine for centuries, if not millennials. It has been featured in all pharmacopeias all over the world until the dawn of the cannabis prohibition in the United States in 1937. Over 70 years later, cannabis has its redemption story, part of which is attributed to the health benefits and high safety profile of CBD.
In 2018, President Trump signed the amended version of the Agricultural Act, removing hemp from the Controlled Substances Act (CSA) as long as its THC content doesnt exceed 0.3% THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid.
Cannabinoid receptors in humans and animals correspond with neurotransmitters known as cannabinoids. They work together to create a series of chemical interactions processed through a complex network called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS works to maintain the chemical balance between the vital functions in the body, including mood, memory, pain transmission, immune response, body temperature, appetite, stress management, neuroprotection, and more.
CBD is the modulator of the endocannabinoid system; it enhances the ECS performance through indirect signaling, which causes this system to produce more of its natural cannabinoids and maintain their higher concentrations in the body.
CBD products are widely available over the counter and online. CBD comes in several forms, from oil drops to concentrated oil pills, edibles, and vape liquids. You can also find CBD in topical products, including creams, gels, balms, and even bath bombs.
In its traditional form, CBD oil is taken sublingually. Consumers can take it on its own or add it to make delicious treats or brew their favorite beverages, such as coffee and tea.
The effects of CBD on the body and brain vary between individuals and depends on several factors, including a persons age, weight, gender, metabolism, the severity of symptoms, and their previous experience with CBD.
In many cases, people report CBD to boost energy and focus. Meanwhile, other people experience drowsiness and lethargy after taking higher doses of CBD, as they can cause the blood pressure to drop temporarily.
According to studies, CBD has a very good safety profile, even in kids. That being said, it can cause a few mild side effects, such as sleepiness, changes in appetite, and diarrhea.
When people hear the word cannabis, they most often think of marijuana. However, marijuana is only one type of cannabis plant, one that comes with high concentrations of THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid.
THC is responsible for the deeply relaxing and euphoric sensations linked to the signature marijuana high. It also has a long list of health benefits, similar to CBD. And just like CBD, THC can be found in cannabis flowers as well as its derivatives like oils, edibles, vapes, and topicals.
Despite having comparable chemical structures, CBD and THC dont share the same psychoactive effects.
Cannabidiol is non-intoxicating, so it wont produce the high associated with THC. The reason why THC induces the psychoactive buzz lies in its affinity with the CB1 receptors in the brain. CBD doesnt directly bind to these receptors. It can even interfere with THCs attempt to bind to them dampening the intoxicating effect.
There are several reasons you might want to start mixing CBD with caffeine.
The caffeine in coffee turns out to produce synergistic effects when taken with CBD. This combination results in an improved level of productivity through increased focus and alertness. CBD and caffeine also slow the breakdown of one another, allowing them to stay available for the body for a longer duration.
Last but not least, CBD directly blocks many of the side-effects of caffeine, including anxiety episodes, shaking, jitteriness, and muscle cramping.
If you want to get the most out of your CBD-and-caffeine combo, we recommend brewing a CBD-infused bulletproof coffee for the longest-lasting effects.

CBD Validator’s Latest Industry Report Finds Large Price Disparities and No Relationship Between Premium Pricing and Quality Manufacturing Across CBD…

Our mission is to create transparency for consumers, notes Dr. Robert Portman, CEO of CBD Validator. Our initial report discovered wide price gaps among similar CBD products, and now it seems that even more products are continuing this pricing inconsistency.
SAN FRANCISCO (PRWEB) September 11, 2020
CBD Validator, an independent industry resource that owns the largest database of rated CBD oil products on the market today, shares its latest report, Large Pricing Variation Between Equivalent CBD Products Fuels Consumer Confusion. This report analyzes more than 2,000 CBD oils, a 39% increase in product coverage from the first retail pricing report published earlier this year, with both reports concluding the continued wide price differences among similar CBD products, creating more consumer mistrust and confusion within this rapidly growing industry.
Our mission is to create transparency for consumers, and the research and data we have focuses on one of the most significant factors that impacts the CBD industry, notes Dr. Robert Portman, CEO of CBD Validator. Our initial report discovered huge price gaps among similar products, and now with this second report, it seems that even more products are continuing the inconsistency.
The CBD industry has been rapidly evolving, and given the unfortunate widespread impact of the COVID pandemic, there have been significant economic and lifestyle changes everywhere, as people seek alternative ways to cope and adapt to this new normal. According to a report from the Brightfield Group, the US CBD market is projected to reach $4.7 billion in sales, with 14% growth from 2019 sales of $4.1 billion. With Americans facing high unemployment levels (11.1 % in June compared to 3.8% in February of this year), 2020s retail sales are not expected to reach levels anticipated prior due to the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic. But, despite key challenges including economic pressures faced by consumers, temporary store closures, inaction by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) constraining growth of the US CBD market, it estimates the total US CBD market still could reach $16.8 billion by 2025.
CBD Validators pricing research and data continues to find great disparities across equivalent CBD products, specifically in the CBD oils and tinctures category:
KEY DATA POINTS
KEY INSIGHTSPricing disparities create consumer confusion and will continue to serve as an obstacle to the growth and mainstream use of CBD. More importantly, there appears to be no relationship between premium pricing and quality manufacturing. Only 19% of the 1000 mg strength CBD oils in the CBD Validator database provide consumers with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) for CBD (a document issued by an independent testing laboratory to assure a product meets specification), pesticides and heavy metals from an independent testing laboratory.

The difference between weed, hemp and CBD explained in 10 points – Cond Nast Traveller India
Posted: at 1:20 am
Bollywood actor Rhea Chakrobortys arrest has stirred a lot of conversation around the use of marijuana recently. But what is marijuana and is it the same as cannabis?Hemp, weed or marijuana and CBD are all byproducts of cannabis and the words are used interchangeablyplus there is a plethora of poetic terms and code words and euphemisms imprinted through pop culture that make them confusing. However, theyre not all the same and have very different uses. While one can get you high, the other is used as a wellness elixir. The legality of cannabis also depends on its use. While medical and industrial use of cannabis is legal in many countries, very few allow it for recreational purposes. In 2018, Canada became the second country after Uruguay to legalise the possession and use of recreational cannabis. But, the conversation is slowly changing. People from countries across the worldItaly to Australiaare campaigning to legalise marijuana for recreational purposes. Now whether you can smoke it or not is a whole different story, but heres is an explainer to help clear the confusion:
Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants that belong to the Cannabaceae family. Cannabis is nothing but the umbrella term, and hemp and marijuana are broad classifications of it.
Cannabis plants have been classified into three primary categories: cannabis sativa, cannabis indica and cannabis ruderalis or hybrid. Each of these are said to have their own characteristics and effects.
Cannabis sativa: Sativas leaves are long, tall and finger-like. It is known for its heady highan invigorating, energising effect that can reduce anxiety or stress and increase creativity and focus.
Cannabis indica: These leaves are shorter, plumper and fuller compared to sativa. Indicas are also known to be calming and relaxing.
Cannabis ruderalis: These are small plants that dont grow more than 12 inches. However, they grow super quickly. Ruderalis is considered to have very low levels of THC and high amounts of CBD, and arent used as much for recreational purposes.
While the often-applied rule of thumb is that sativas are more energising and indicas are more calming, this has not been scientifically proven.
Now, what are THC and CBD? Cannabis is made up of nearly 120 chemicals, which are known as cannabinoids. The two common ones are cannabidiol (CBD) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC and CBD are present in both marijuana and hemp. Hemp contains high CBD and low THC (less than 0.3%), while marijuana contains much more THC (over 0.3%).
THC is the chemical that gets you high! It is the psychoactive compound that is responsible for the euphoria that most people associate with cannabis. THC has the ability to alter moods, control pain and other feelings.
You know the friend who drinks one too many but never gets high? Thats CBD. While CBD is said to be a psychoactive active cannabinoid, it does not have the same effects as THC. Its not-intoxicating and non-euphoric, so it will not get you high. WebMD points out that its thought to work with other elements in the body linked to feelings of well-being. It has the ability to ease nausea, migraine, seizures and anxiety, according to Healthline.
Hemp is cannabis with less chemicals. It contains less than 0.3% THC, so it cant get you high like marijuana. You may wonder why 0.3%? This definition was proposed in 1979 in the book The Species Problem in Cannabis: Science & Semantics. The author stated that its difficult to distinguish hemp and marijuana, as there is no taxonomical difference between the two. The number was proposed as the solution to distinguish between hemp and marijuana. This number is now used in the legal definition of hemp in the Agricultural Act of 2018 in the United States.
Besides the THC percentage, hemp and marijuana have different uses as well. The latter is used to make textiles (clothing, handbags, shoes), food (hemp seed oil, hemp seed hearts, hemp protein powder), paper, ropes, supplements and more. In India, the cultivation of hemp for industrial purposes or for horticulture is legal.
Pot, weed, dope, ganja, Mary Jane or whatever you may call it, all refer to marijuana. Had that one friend who couldnt stop gushing about their trippy holiday to Amsterdam? Besides rolling into cigarettes and smoking through a pipe, marijuana is consumed in many other ways. Think brownies, cookies, gummies, lollipops, rice crispies, chocolates, candies and beverage mixes.
Simply put, marijuana is cannabis that gets you high, as it contains a THC of more than 0.3%.
Hash is said to be the most potent form of cannabis due to higher THC. Weed is the dried cannabis plant, whereas hash is made from the resin and sap of cannabis. Hash oil can contain about 90% THC, as compared to the 12% THC levels found in other cannabis products.
Consumption of marijuana is illegal in India. However, Holi is an exception. The festival of colour is often associated with bhang. The concoction is made by mixing dried and ground cannabis leaves with milk, kesar, almonds and spices. Some places in India also make the drink with yoghurt. The result is a frothy, thandai-like drink that gives you a heady high. The Holi drink finds a mention in ancient Hindu texts like Atharvaveda as a reliever of anxiety and stress. Legend has it that the plant was discovered by Lord Shiva and is closely associated with him.
But how is bhang so easily available when marijuana is illegal in India? Lets just say there are some loopholes. In 1985, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act listed cannabis as a narcotic drug, prohibiting its cultivation, possession, consumption or transportation. But it only listed some parts of the plant as narcotic such as the bud and resin. Theres no mention of the leaves, and this is why you can enjoy the high on Holi.
Hemp oil is derived by cold-pressing hemp seeds. Its a clear greenish oil with a nutty flavour. The oil is considered to have numerous health benefits, especially when it comes to improving skin health. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it can be used to treat acne. Its also known to have anti-inflammatory properties. Hemp oil can also be mixed with food, smoothies, salad dressings or soups.
CBD is one of the many 100 chemicals that is found in cannabis. The oil is extracted from the cannabis plant, and then diluted with hempseed or coconut oil. This oil is the option of choice when one wants to relieve themselves of pain, anxiety, sleep disorders and other conditions without the mind-altering effects of marijuana and other pharmaceutical drugs. CBD oil is also known to be a palliative aid for cancer patients. It may help reduce nausea, vomiting, pain and other side effects induced by chemotherapy, as per research. The oil contains a low amount of THC, which provides the high. CBD oil is consumed in many different ways. It could be for topical use, or also could be mixed with edibles or inhaled via a vape.
CBD has become a popular wellness potion that can be found in juices, lotions, sweets and dog treats. Last year, Kim Kardashian threw a CBD-themed baby shower.

CBD and Cancer: What is the Best CBD Oil for Cancer – fingerlakes1.com
Posted: August 26, 2020 at 3:58 pm
The best CBD oil has been presented in several studies as treatment options for cancer patients. Some results were inconclusive while others showed the great potential of CBD oil for cancer care.
CBD is a cannabinoid mostly extracted from hemp plants that contain less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, the active cannabinoid responsible for the psychoactive side effect of cannabis. The best CBD products for sale can be found in-stores and online.
Cancer is an age-long disease the medical field has been battling with and continues to struggle against. It is caused by changes in a persons genetic makeup that leads to uncontrolled cell growth and forms tumors. Most cancers are caused by DNA alteration or damage, while a few cancers are due to inherited genes.
Like most fatal diseases, cancer does not single out a particular part of the body but instead spreads unless it is treated, usually with methods such as chemotherapy. Cancer has a very high fatality rate but with recent technology and emerging studies, cancer patients now have a much better chance of survival than they would have 20 years ago.
Many cancer treatments are on a clinical trial basis because every cancer is considered unique, and it depends entirely on the genetic makeup of the patient if their body will respond well to any type of treatment. Radiation therapy seems to be the most effective but many patients find themselves exhausted and feeling worse right after.
With this, many are looking for ways to alleviate symptoms of cancer and lessen the harsh side effects of cancer treatments. CBD has been found effective in helping with this.
Some side effects of cancer and undergoing cancer treatments are nausea and vomiting, chronic pain, appetite loss, anxiety, and depression. Patients seek relief from more natural and organic products to lessen their chemical intake, which they get enough from in their medications.
A CBD cancer treatment guide may be able to help cancer patients in their battle against cancer with CBDs many health benefits that prove beneficial. These benefits include:
Along these, CBD also fights anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders. Though CBD has many health benefits, it is most important to remember that these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. CBD products are not fully intended to treat cancer or any other medical conditions, but instead are used as supplements to help maintain the overall bodys wellbeing.
A recent study has found CBD to be effective in catalyzing cancer cells death and making glioblastoma cells more sensitive to radiation. Glioblastomas are cancer cells responsible for glioma cancer, the most lethal and malignant primary brain cancer that occurs mostly in adults.
Other studies have also suggested that CBD helps in preventing tumor growth in pancreatic and bladder cancers. Clinical trials and research in breast cancer and prostate cancer therapy using CBD products have also been conducted with promising results.
Many studies already support CBD as a great health supplement to sustain and maintain the body with its daily dose of vitamins and minerals.
The best CBD oil for cancer can be found in many pharmaceuticals alongside other health supplements such as fish oil and the like. Online stores like CBDMEDIC also cater to high-quality CBD products that undergo third-party laboratory testing to ensure decontamination and high-grade hemp strains.

Is CBG the Next CBD? – MSN Money

Move over CBD, there's a new cannabinoid in town.
It's called CBG (short for cannabigerol), and experts are predicting it could be the next "it" supplement. CBG is vying for CBD status, which is one of the main compounds called cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. They're both from hemp, a cannabis plant like marijuana. CBD (cannabidiol) has blown up in popularity and you can find it in an array of products including supplements, drinks, cosmetics, and lotions. But CBG has mostly flown under the radarat least until recently.
So what is CBG and how is it different from CBD oil and its kissing cousin THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the cannabinoid responsible for marijuana's mind-altering effects?
While we're learning a lot about CBD and THC, there are still a lot of unknowns surrounding CBG and what it is capable of, says Kent Vrana, PhD, chair of the department of pharmacology, Penn State College of Medicine.

Cannabis plants contain 100-plus cannabinoids, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. "CBG has been touted by entrepreneurs as the 'mother of all cannabinoids' because it is the plant precursor to THC and CBD," explains Vrana. "Two different plant enzymes convert CBG to THC or CBD."
CBG shares some structural similarities with THC and CBD. "However, as a drug, it behaves someplace in between CBD and THC, although it does not get you high," Vrana says.
This is likely due to the way it affects your brain, says Marcel Bonn-Miller, PhD, adjunct assistant professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also the global senior director, clinical science for the Canopy Growth Corporation, a group that aims to produce and sell legal marijuana in the Canadian medical market. Canopy Growth Corporation does not produce CBG or CBG-infused products.
"While the mechanism of CBG's action is still not fully understood, it is unlikely that it produces its effects through the cannabinoid receptors" in the brain, Bonn-Miller says. While THC locks into these cannabinoid receptors directly, CBD doesn't depend on that interaction for its effect; CBG likely doesn't either, which may be why it doesn't produce a high like marijuana.
Hemp has a lot of CBD, but just a touch of CBG, which makes it tougher to produce than CBD or THC. "The plant generally doesn't store it or accumulate CBG because it all gets converted to THC, CBD, and another compound," Vrana adds. "But plant biologists are now creating strains to increase the amount of CBG."
This is why CBG is very expensive to make, says Peter Grinspoon, MD, instructor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also a board member at Doctors for Cannabis, a physician group promoting the broad legalization of marijuana so that it can be studied for potential medical use.
How CBG is produced is important, especially when it comes to taking drug tests. Even though CBD doesn't produce a high, the traces of THC found in CBD may be enough to trigger a failed drug test. This is likely not a risk for CBG, Dr. Grinspoon explains. "It depends on how it is made," he says. "If it is engineered in a lab, there is no risk of flunking a drug test, but if it is from a plant, there may be."
There's a lot of hype, some hope, but very little research in humans about the potential benefits of CBG right now. CBG researchers still don't even know what they don't know about the new "it" cannabinoid.
"With CBD, the enthusiasm outpaces the science, and I am hoping that doesn't happen with CBG," says Dr. Grinspoon. "I get the feeling that we'll be seeing it in cosmetics, lattes, and supplements soon and I am a little concerned that just like CBD, we are going to get a gap between the science and the reality with CBG."
The main potential uses of CBG are anti-inflammatory, Dr. Grinspoon says. It could play a role in helping to treat inflammatory bowel syndromes such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and possibly even irritable bowel syndrome, he says. "We need human studies, but they are very promising in animal studies," he says
Another potential use of CBG is to treat the potentially blinding eye disease, glaucoma, which causes damage when fluid builds up inside the eye and increases pressure. "Cannabis has always been thought of as a treatment for glaucoma, and this molecule may be why," he says.
CBG may also have some antibacterial properties. "In the lab, it kills MRSA [a dangerous bacteria], and we are slowly running out of antibiotics that treat it due to decades of overuse of antibiotics," Dr. Grinspoon says.
It may also help reduce inflammation and protect brain cells in individuals with Huntington's disease, a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. This would be a game-changer for the approximately 30,000 Americans that have the disease and those at risk of inheriting the condition. But the research is in its infancy, Dr. Grinspoon notes.
CBG may also help counteract the intoxicating effects of THC, he says. "If marijuana makes you feel paranoid, CGB may help, and this will allow you to continue using marijuana for medical reasons."
The good news is that, so far, CBG seems safe and non-toxic. "It has been reported that it binds to a non-cannabinoid receptor in the brain that could reduce blood pressure," Vrana says. But, he cautions, this could be dangerous if someone already on blood-pressure-lowering meds were to take it on top of the prescription drug. Because CBD can interact with several common medicationsantibiotics, cholesterol drugs, immunosuppressants, pain medications, and moreand CBG is so similar, check with your doctor before trying CBG.
CBG may increase appetite, which can be beneficial if you are being treated for cancer or another disease and need nourishment, but not so helpful if you are trying to lose weight.
The FDA is currently weighing the best ways to monitor CBD and CBG products. THC is still covered under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA), but CBD was removed thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. Now it is up to the FDA to decide how to regulate the sale of CBG and other non-THC products. Until the FDA gets involved with the regulation of CBG, says Dr. Grinspoon, "there is no guarantee that the product contains what is listed on the label. Look for products that have independent lab testing and offers a Certificate of Analysis. This is the best way to assure you are getting what you are paying for.

Depressed elephant at Warsaw Zoo to receive experimental cannabis oil treatment – The Independent
Posted: at 3:58 pm
After a death in the herd left young Fredzia struggling to cope, zoo keepers turned to an experimental new treatment they hope will relieve the effects of depression and anxiety in the mourning elephant.
Erna, the largest female and elder of the African elephant enclosure at Warsaw Zoo, died in March, leaving behind three mourning younger companions to learn their new roles in a fractured group. Fredzia in particular has found it difficult to adapt.
This is a huge game-changer in every elephant group. Elephants might have behavioural problems when the structure of a group changes, Dr Agnieszka Czujkowska, who leads the zoos Animal Rehabilitation department, told the BBC.
Sharing the full story, not just the headlines
At the time of Ernas death, zoo keepers say Fredzia was depressed and showed signs of grieving. The young elephant has since appeared stressed as it struggles to bond with fellow female Buba.
Dr Czujkowska and colleagues hope an experimental cannabis oil treatment will alleviate Fredzias stress, allowing the elephant to more comfortably get along with the others and restore balance to the herd.
Cannabidiol, known on the market as CBD oil, is extracted from a cannabis plant compound and is thought to increase the brains production of dopamine and serotonin, two chemicals known to affect mood. CBD has no psychoactive effects, so will not intoxicate the elephants.
For the experiment at Warsaw, Dr Czujkowska will monitor the elephants cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone produced in the bodies of humans and animals in stressful situations. A control measurement has already been taken.
We are planning to give them the CBD and measure the cortisol again. This is the experiment. Then we know for sure [the oil] is working or not, Dr Czujkowska said.
Professor Caitlin OConnell of Stanford University, who leads the Mushara research project observing the social structure of elephant groups, told The Independent that CBD should be an appropriate treatment for the Warsaw herd considering the stress relieving effects it can have on humans, who may not cope so differently with loss to their large-eared fellow mammals.
[Elephants] do appear to display similar behaviours to our own in the context of loss, and since we share the same hormones, anything that helps reduce anxiety seems worth trying, Professor OConnell said.
Professor OConnell writes about the complex ways in which elephants cope with grief in Wild Rituals, her upcoming book. In a case not unlike that at Warsaw Zoo which saw the death of matriarch in a herd, zoo keepers gave the younger elephants access to the dead body and two of the deceased animals closest companions spent the entire night sprinkling dirt over the corpse.
