Martha Stewart, Jaleel White and more promote cannabis use: Experts weigh in on THC vs. CBD – USA TODAY

Posted: at 12:19 pm

From ancient China to 420, pot has come a long way.

What do Martha Stewart,Jay-Z and Jaleel White (aka Steve Urkel) have in common? They're all in the cannabis business.

They're among many stars, including Snoop Dogg and Seth Rogen, who havejoinedthe industry in recent years and are making bold statements with their products. Stewart'sself-named brand of CBD gummies claims to "make wellnessan easier choice, every day," andRogen'sHouseplant strain of THCpromises to give a "smooth, warmandcalming experience."

These lofty product claims may be seen as marketing ploys in an increasingly competitive industry, but experts say there can be wellness benefits to some of these products.

Here's what they told usabout marijuana and CBD in its various forms ahead of 4/20, an unofficial day that celebrates cannabis culture.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) are both chemicals known as cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant, but the two have differing effects and legal restrictions in the U.S.

"THC is (a cannabinoid) that has psychoactive properties, not that it's not healthy for you but it does get you high, unlike CBD," saysCraig Henderson, CEO of Extract Labs, a Colorado-based company that specializes in extracting CBD from hemp plants for products.

CBD's chemical compound doesn't alter a person's mental state and can be harvested from the same place as THC, but it is mostly taken from the hemp cannabis plant.

THC is what's typically known asweed or pot and is legal recreationallyin 15 states.Somestates allow it to be used medicinally under a doctor's supervision.

As more states legalize marijuana, more eyes are turningtoward the industry. Willie Nelson, Gwyneth Paltrow and most recently "Crazy Rich Asians" actor Jimmy O. Yang have lent their names to cannabis products.

Each of their brands promise different results. Kristen Bell's Happy Dance CBD skincare says the products provide "a little more calm," while"Family Matters" actor Jaleel White says his "Purple Urkel" brand is dedicated to celebrating the "many medical breakthroughs" of cannabis.

But those who have been in the industry a little longer than these big-nameendorsers say it's a different type of green catalyzing interest.

"Moneyis why they're getting involved," saysHenderson."If you're a new CBD company, you haven't been around for four or five years, or just a cannabis company in general, how do you start off strong? You come in with a bunch of money, you bring on a spokesperson that already has a big name for themselves."

In March, New York became the 15th state to legalizemarijuana in the United States. Other states include:

Dr. Patricia Frye, who works with patients in the D.C. area who are interested in cannabis treatments, recommends CBD for those who live in states where marijuana is not legal.

Frye says both CBD and THC can help with sleep, anxiety, metabolism, stress and appetite.

"These cannabinoids are so helpful, (because) people are starting to move away from a lot of pharmaceuticals," she says.

There are still plenty of unknowns when it comes to CBD.

The FDA hasapprovedthe use of the drugEpidiolex, which contains CBD, forspecific cases of seizures and epilepsy. The FDA-approved drugwasplaced in the "least restrictive" category of controlled substancesby the Drug Enforcement Agency, meaning it's in the same category as cough medicineRobitussin AC.

But overall, its a lot safer than anything else youd be using if youre using it instead of opioids for pain or Ambien to help you sleep or instead of benzodiazepine for anxiety," saidDr. Peter Grinspoon, a Harvard Medical School professor and a primary care doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Leeta Jussila, a practitioner who specializes in cannabis, says that everyone's system is different, so the way people absorb CBD differs. She recommends new users consult with health care providers and closely track how small doses of the chemical effect them.

"They could get a headache. Sometimes people say, 'I feel funny,' but youll never overdose on cannabis. You'll just start to detox," she said. "CBD is an oil, fat, lipid. Some people might get diarrhea. Ive had one person get nausea, dry mouth or dizziness. But it depends on the quality of the product."

Frye and Grinspoon both cautionthose looking to try CBD to do their research about the products they are purchasing.

"You have to be careful with purchasing CBDbecause like the nutritional supplement industry, it's not well regulated,"Frye says."There are some very fine products out there and then there's a lot of junk out there. So people have to be careful."

Ive had patients have what seems like a pretty dramatic effect beneficially, and Ive had other people say, Why did I just waste $60 on this? It didnt do anything, Grinspoon said. Its very variable. Its complicated by the fact that its not that regulated, so you have to be a savvy shopper to even be sure that you get the right amount of CBD that youre ordering.

Grinspoon said it is important to look for a certificate of assurance when shopping for products.

Dont just take their word for it. You know, if you go into a gas station, youre not necessarily going to get good CBD," he said.

The Chemistry of Delta-8 ‘New and Improved’ THC – American Council on Science and Health

Posted: at 12:19 pm

For those whofollow our bizarre concoction of drug laws, itshould come as no surprise that theyare both ineffective and also woefully ill-equipped to keep up with new (sometimes) legal analogs that even a marginally trained chemist can do. As I wrote about fentanyl analogs, chemistry, specificallysynthetic organic chemistry (1),can easily be used toget around the law.

Rather than bore you with a tome about the legality of marijuana and marijuana chemicals, I thought I'd bore you with a chemistry lesson instead. Get ready. Here it comes! It's been a while, so I made this one especially incomprehensible. Let TDCLFH begin!

Nomenclature - The bane of our existence

Chemistry nomenclature, the tedious process ofnaming chemicals, is a baffling array of multiple naming systems, dozens of different names for the same chemical (2),and incomprehensible rules. This can be illustrated quite "nicely"by looking at how delta-8 THC, a chemical that has recentlybeen in the news, gets its name. Thisshould give you a pretty good idea of why nomenclature drives chemists nuts. (For clarification, you should know that delta-9 the primary THC isomer in marijuana is commonlyknown as THC. The namesare interchangeable)

What Does the 8 in Delta-8 Mean?

If you have any propensitytoward anxiety or self-harm, you might want to skip this. The figures below show the (apparent absence of) logic behind the number 8. Figure A (left) starts off making at leastsome sense.

Each carbon is assigned a number, which is necessary for assigning a name to aunique structure. The carbonatomat 12:00, which is attached to a hydroxyl group (green square), is called#1. From there, proceedingcounterclockwise, the numbers assigned to the next carbon atomsincrease logically 2, then 3, then 4.Then 5, right? Nope.

Figure B shows that the position after #4 is ...#10b (blue). Huh? How can this be? Answer: you don't want to know. Continuing, #5 gets assigned to the oxygen atom next to 10b.No big deal. We're still pretty much followinga backward clock, so there is some logic remaining. But notmuch.

(Mercifully ending this wretched lesson)Figure C shows thatthe carbon atomafter #6, like #10a, makes no sense. Instead ofbeing called#7, it's6a (blue). Why? Once again, don't ask. A degree of sanity returns after this. Carbon #7 shows up next on the clock dial (4:00) and is followed by 8 and then 9. This is where the "delta-8" comes from. Greek letters are usedto describe the position of double bonds (yellow line). The same holds true for dietary supplements, for example, omega-6 or omega-3 fish oils. Delta-8 means that the double bond exists between carbon atoms 8 and 9. The delta part is beyond the scope of this article. Be thankful for this.

And, if this wasn't sufficiently horrifying to have you opening up Amazon to order Final Exit, it can be worse. There is a 69-page document put out by the WHO titled "Isomers of THC."If you're looking for a little light readingthis is as good as it gets. Take a look at this especially enthrallingpassage:

Ah, chemistry. Source: WHO,Isomers of THC

Seriously, who cares?

Both marijuana users and law enforcement care, otherwise I would not have dragged you through this hideous exercise. The position of that double bond determines both the pharmacological properties and legality of the chemical. The chemical properties of delta-8 and delta-9 THC (the "normal" THC in marijuana) are nearly identical, as aretheir chemical structures. The only difference in strucrture is the position of the double bond (yellow).

Pharmacology

As you'd expect, when two molecules are so similar theyact similarly on the receptors inthe brain. This is largely true, although there are subtledifferences between the two. Delta-8 has a similar psychotropic profile to THC but is thought to be less potent. Relatively little is known about this drug because itarrived on the scene only recently and becausecannabis and CBD oil contain only trace amounts of the chemical, so there wasn't enough around to isolate and study until a chemist figured out how to make it.

Chemistry to the "rescue"

Two years ago I wrote about the chemical differencebetween CBD and THC onechemical bond and whether it was feasibleto use CBD as a source for THC. (It isn't the reaction that was used gave a mess (a complex mixture containing many impurities).

HPLC trace of psychoactive substances formed by reacting CBD with dilute acid. There are at least four impurities present. Source:Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research Volume 1.1, 2016 DOI: 10.1089/can.2015.0004

But the chemistfound that a different setofconditions enabledCBD could be converted not to THC, butto delta-8 THC, which spawned a cottage industry in the stuff(3). Thischemistry is explained on the subtly named site Hempvada. Why do I think that their annual board of directors meeting looks something like this?

HempvadaBOD meeting? Photo: Flickr

A quick visit to the Hempvadasite shows (unsurprisingly) that they are peddling CBD products. With a flair! Here are some of them:

Legal matters

Delta-8 was synthesized because it was previously "unknown" and therefore (possibly) legal. Or maybe it isn't. This depends on where you are and how drug laws are interpreted. It's a complicated mess.I haven't the bandwidth (or intellect) to go into the myriad of often contradictorylaws governing the use of marijuana and its chemicals, but Jon Jackson writing for Newsweekand Bill Weinberg on the Project THC site doa very nice job of explaining this complex topic.

Signing off

For all both of you who have made it through TCDHFH as well as the rest of this somnorific article, congratulations! Most humanswould have taken onelook at the nomenclature section alone and hastily switched over to reading prescription drug inserts. Feel free to reward yourself. Perhaps chow down on some pot brownies. Just keep in mind that what you're getting might not be so pure.

NOTES:

(1) Synthetic organic chemistry is the science of converting one substance to another by the use of known reactions. It is the basis of much of drug discovery.

(2) I wasn'tkidding. All of the following are legitimate names for delta-9THC. There are 136 of them. Is it any wonder that chemists are thought of as some yet-to-be-defined, but aberrant species?

(3) Chicago Sun Times: "An unregulated, weed-like drug dubbed CBD on crack has spiked in popularity. Now the legal pot industry is calling for a crackdown."

How to Buy CBD for Dogs in Maryland – The Southern Maryland Chronicle

Posted: at 12:19 pm

The popularity of CBD has increased dramatically across the US over the past several years, with everything from sodas to bath salts now being offered in a CBD-infused format.

This includes CBD for dogs, which is a fast-growing sector within the pet industry. Owners have found that CBD can help dogs to deal with common conditions like joint inflammation, skin irritations, and separation anxiety when spending time alone.

Unfortunately, the growth of pet CBD has coincided with a rise in low-quality and fake cannabis products, as bad actors seek to take advantage of the increased demand. With many owners new to the world of CBD, it can be confusing and difficult to separate genuine products from the scams.

To help, here are a few tips for dog owners to keep in mind when shopping, as well as some reputable places to buy CBD for dogs in the Maryland area.

Shop from reputable brands and suppliers

Not every pet CBD product is made equal. Some manufacturers often known as seed to shelf companies have decades of experience in the cannabis industry. These brands may have their own hemp farms or long-standing relationships with hemp farmers. They often work with homegrown strains of hemp, specifically bred to benefit dogs.

Other, less reputable brands may only handle the end-processes of CBD manufacturing, such as packaging and marketing. These companies rarely consist of more than a warehouse and website, buying pre-extracted CBD in powdered form, infusing into oils, and shipping it out to customers.

One way to bypass these sub-par companies is to stick to trusted brands and retailers. By doing some research online or heading to a reliable pet store (see below), owners can feel confident that CBD products have been produced with dogs best interests at heart. Try to avoid impulse buying and dont shop for CBD on Amazon, which doesnt officially allow the sale of CBD on its marketplace.

Look for the right type of CBD

Most CBD products made for humans are not appropriate for dogs. This is because human CBD is often made from marijuana rather than hemp, which is a psychoactive form of the cannabis plant. Marijuana plants generally contain higher amounts of THC, the compound associated with a high.

Making pet CBD from hemp plants ensures that all products are legal on both a federal and state level, and that they dont contain more than 0.3% THC, which is considered a safe level for all dogs to consume.

Cannabis extractions also fall into three different categories: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and Isolate. Full Spectrum products are made with a complete extraction of the hemp flower, while Broad Spectrum products use a partial extraction. In Isolate products, extracts are processed to remove everything apart from pure CBD.

Dogs can benefit from any type of extract, but full-spectrum extracts are generally considered the most effective. This is because full-spectrum extractions supply dogs with a range of cannabis compounds, all of which work safely together to reduce inflammation.

Think about whether your pet will benefit from CBD

Like other types of cannabis products, CBD is primarily an anti-inflammatory. This means its unlikely to be of benefit to happy dogs showing no signs of an inflammatory condition.

Likewise, CBD is able to soothe symptoms of inflammatory canine conditions like anxiety and seizures, but its not considered a cure for such disorders, so wont make them go away permanently. Its important for owners to consult with their vet about any new issue occurring with their dog.
