The True Story Behind the Casino Movie – Film Threat
Posted: August 18, 2021 at 7:47 am
You might have heard of the movie Casino, which came out in 1995. It might be a little old, but it is still a crime-thriller worth watching for any fans of casinos and gambling. Directed by the famous Martin Scorsese and starring the likes of Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci, it remains one of the most celebrated casino-related movies today.
But did you know that its actually based on a true story? Thats right most of the things you saw on the big screen actually played out in real life! Maybe not exactly the same way, but nobody wants to ring up the mafia and ask them for such details.
Back in the 70s and 80s, many casinos in America were run by the mafia. It was a lawless time, as gambling establishments were illegal. As you know, the Mafia were fully willing to use brutal measures to make money.
The story opens with Sam Rothstein (De Niro) being assigned to run a casino, the Tangiers. His job was to simply keep things running smoothly and ensure that the mafia reaped the profits.
Other characters are a part of the casino or the mafia, such as Ginger (Sharon Stone), a stripper with whom Sam gets entangled with, and Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci), another member of the mafia assigned to protect Sam.
In Casino, viewers get to watch the brutality of the mafia and their encounters with the law. Ultimately, things come to a head and only a few of the characters make it out alive.
So, the big question on everyones minds is, did everything depicted in the movie really happen?
Most of the events in the movie are actually true! Yes, many of the incidents where people were brutalized and murdered actually happened. Its an unfortunate reality of living a life of crime.
While the names are different, there are real-life equivalents to almost every character in the movie. Sam and Ginger, who in real life were known as Frank and Geraldine, did have a relationship just like in the movie.
Nicky, knows as Tony Spilotro in reality, actually did get banned from every single casino in Nevada after a heated argument with the Gaming Control Board.
Sam, the main character, is as imposing a figure in reality as he was in the movie. He really did survive a car bombing, host a reality TV show, and live past the events of the movie until passing away at the ripe old age of 79.
Not every single detail will line up between real-life and the movie. A few of these differences are for the sake of dramatic effect, while others are because there wasnt enough information at the time.
If you loved the movie, you can check out Nicholas Pileggis Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas. This book was written based on a true story, and the movie was adapted from the book.
If youre feeling inspired and want to get a taste of the thrill of gambling yourself, check out Superlines Casino for some action!

Public hearing held for proposed casino in the Nittany Mall – WTAJ – www.wearecentralpa.com
Posted: at 7:47 am
CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board hosted a public hearing for the communities input on the proposed College Township Casino, to be located in the Nittany Mall.
The hearing began with a presentation from the casinos winning bidder, Ira Lubert, and his team.
I see an opportunity for the commonwealth and a local community in need of additional economic engines, said Lubert of SC Gaming LLC.
Statements of support were offered from Senator Jake Corman and the district manager for Senator Kerry Benninghoff.
Public comment included those in favor of the casino, such as one local hotel owner, who said it will bring new business for hotels and he is prepared to promote the casino.
This proposed casino will certainly be a major contributor to our recovery as a hospitality industry and as a community, said John Delozier, managing partner for Nittany Hotel Group.
Those against the casino said it would negatively impact the communitys quality of life.
A casino will not provide sustenance for the poor, underemployed, and desperate, said Carl Miller, a Bellefonte resident. On the contrary a casino entices the poor to risk an already inadequate means of support on an exceedingly slim chance of financial gain.
Lubert says they will present another, more thorough presentation of the casinos proposal.
The casino will be discussed at the August 17 College Township Planning Commission meeting.

Vaccine Requirements At Casinos Get A Shot In The Arm – US Bets
Posted: at 7:47 am
For those who choose to roll the figurative dice with COVID-19 by not getting vaccinated against the virus, its beginning to get harder to roll the literal dice at a casino.
In keeping with a local mandate by New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell concerning indoor activities, on Monday Harrahs New Orleans became the first casino in the U.S. to require either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to enter the property. It cant quite be called a vaccine mandate, thanks to the or a negative COVID test clause, but the inconvenience of getting tested repeatedly will likely serve to either discourage unvaccinated citizens from entering the casino or to encourage them to get their shots.
With 60.8% of people in Louisianas Orleans parish having received at least one vaccine dose, the city is well above the state average of 46% (just 38% in the state are fully vaccinated, the fifth-lowest total in the country), but that still leaves quite a few unvaccinated people in the region who might be interested in a night out at the casino. And starting Tuesday, unvaccinated potential guests at Resorts World New York City, part of the Aqueduct Racetrack complex, will have an even tougher time getting into the casino. The vaccine mandate for the five boroughs doesnt include an or a negative COVID test option, and it now expands from indoor dining to also cover casinos as well as sports stadiums, movie theaters, concert halls, and other venues.
New York City is in slightly better shape, vaccination-wise, than New Orleans, with 63% having received at least one shot, while the state is far ahead of Louisiana with 58.5% of the population fully vaccinated.
After a late spring and early summer spent with COVID in retreat in much of America as the vaccines became readily available to everyone age 12 and up, the spread of the Delta variant, predominantly among the unvaccinated, has reversed much of that momentum.
Indoor mask requirements are going back into effect in many areas, particularly metropolitan ones. This is impacting casinos in states such as Pennsylvania, where two of the states 15 brick-and-mortar properties are located within Philadelphia borders and are now subject to mask requirements regardless of vaccination status, while the other 13 casinos in the state operate without such requirements.
There is naturally some talk about whether casinos in less restricted regions will benefit financially in the short term from customers who are anti-vaccine, anti-mask, or both taking their business to those other casinos. There is also much talk about how effectively vaccine mandates can be enforced, as the paper vaccination cards are not difficult to forge and the U.S. has yet to establish a digital vaccination authentication system.
The prevailing approach goes further than the masks optional if vaccinated signs that have served as window dressing at countless businesses the last several months, but it still isnt comprehensive enough to discourage those who are unvaccinated but motivated to gamble.
While states, cities, and casinos around the country weigh their various options with regard to vaccine mandates, one major gambling event looms about six weeks in the distance: the World Series of Poker.
The last time a full, in-person WSOP took place, as many as 28,000 poker players descended upon the Rio in Las Vegas for a single tournament. On any given day at the World Series, thousands of poker players share breathing space around tables and in long lines in hallways and bathrooms. Its hard to envision a scenario under which the highly transmissible Delta variant doesnt spread among players if unvaccinated entrants are allowed barring COVID case numbers dropping precipitously between now and the scheduled start of the WSOP on Sept. 30.
Even for vaccinated poker players, the risk level has gone up significantly since the tournament dates were announced back in June with understandable optimism. From the moment Vegas brought back its mask mandate in early August, the WSOP has been shrouded in uncertainty.
The WSOP released its 2021 tournament rules last week, and the regulation that garnered the most attention concerned the Rios ability to disqualify a player if they either test positive for COVID-19 or come into close proximity with someone who tested positive.
On Aug. 13, the World Series issued a clarification:
In short, those who are fully vaccinated and asymptomatic are far less likely to be DQd than those who are unvaccinated but theres still plenty of gray area in all directions. Its an approach somewhat similar to that taken by the NFL, making life more challenging for unvaccinated players without explicitly requiring vaccines.
Two-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Mark Seif didnt mince words as to how he thinks the WSOP needs to approach vaccination:
The replies to Seifs tweet show a snapshot of how split society is on such an approach. As with all things COVID in the U.S. right now, there are those who think being required to wear a mask infringes upon their rights and there are those who feel vaccine mandates should be in effect for all public spaces.
The WSOP is bound to lose customers operating at either end of the spectrum and at all points in between. Its a no-win situation, at least under the current COVID case load, and legal action in response to disqualifications seems inevitable. But a vaccination mandate complete with the ability to somehow confirm vaccination status would appear the clearest path to an in-person WSOP played to completion and to minimizing the need for disqualifications.
Local and state governments might go further in taking the decision out of the hands of entities like the WSOP and casinos. But for now, many such private businesses are faced with decisions for which every option presents a set of downsides.

Las Vegas casino tycoon Allen Glick, exposed as a mob frontman, dies of 79-year-old cancer – Texasnewstoday.com
Posted: at 7:47 am
Allen R. Glick, who once owned four casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, died of cancer at the age of 79.
The former casino owner died of cancer at the age of 79, praised by his Las Vegas business leader for his clean business records before it became clear that he was actually a mob frontman.
Allen R, CEO of Argent Corporation, who owned four casinos on the Las Vegas Strip during its heyday. Glicks family announced that they died of cancer on August 2. He was 79 years old.
Originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Glick became famous for taking ownership of hotel casinos in Stardust, Hacienda, Fremont and Mariana in the 1970s. The only big guy with a larger Las Vegas casino portfolio than Glick was the recluse billionaire Howard Hughes.
He won the Man of the Year Award in Las Vegas after being promoted to the top of Sin City society in a seemingly legitimate way.
However, Glicks reputation came after it was revealed that his deputy commander, FrankLeftyRosenthal, secretly scooped $ 7 million from slot machines and passed the proceeds to American criminal families. , Shattered.
Glick claimed he was unaware of the mob relationship and avoided criminal convictions in return for acting as a witness to more than 12 mobs.
The scam was adapted in the 1995 movie Casino, in which Kevin Pollak played casino owner Phillip Green, whose character is modeled after Glick.
Meanwhile, Robert De Niro played Sam Rothsteen, who was based on Rosenthal.
Glick (right) is welcomed as the Golden Boy on the Vegas Strip, and his deputy commander FrankLeftyRosenthal (right) is $ 7 million from slot machines for the top criminal families in Kansas City and Milwaukee. Was secretly skimming
Glick denied knowing about skimming operations and acted as a witness to the FBI, leading to the final death of more than 12 mob bosses.
The scam was adapted in the movie Casino, in which Kevin Pollak (center) played a Glick-based character and Robert De Niro played a Rosenthal-based character.
Born April 11, 1942 in Pittsburgh, Glick received a PhD in Law from Case Western Reserve School of Law and enrolled in bars in both California and Pennsylvania.
In 1967, he joined the army as a lieutenant in the military police branch, but eventually transferred to special operations, served as captain in Vietnam, and learned to speak a language to support military research and relief efforts. ..
For his achievements, he was awarded the Bronze Star, three Combat Air medals, and the Medal of Honor of Vietnam.
He was honorable discharged in 1969 and moved to San Diego, where he joined the American Housing Guild and Saratoga Land Development Company in San Diego.
From there, his 702-word obituary (which doesnt mention Glicks mob ties) says he pioneered development at the southern tip of the Las Vegas Strip and founded his own company.
According to the Mob Museum, in 1972, a $ 2.3 million loan from the Saratoga Land Development Company was used to acquire a major stake in Hacienda Hotel Casino and a Nevada casino license.
However, he broadened his horizons because he also wanted to buy Stardust Hotel Casino in 1974. There he met the top leader of Milwalky, a criminal family in Kansas City, and found out that he knew from college the son of Frank Ballist Reali, the boss of the Milwalky mob.
Glick then met with Ballistrieri personally and decided to buy Stardust and Fremont casinos by Glick buying control of Recrion Corporation. This later became Argent Corporation.
In exchange, Glick would agree to allow Barristolilis sons Joseph and John Joseph the option to buy his company for only $ 25,000.
When Glick agreed to the deal, Barristolili obtained Glicks Team Stars Pension Fund loan with the help of the mob bosses in Kansas City, Chicago and Cleveland. And at the age of 32, he received a $ 62.75 million loan.
By October 1974, Glick publicly announced that FrankLeftyRosenthal would be his executive assistant.
However, Rosenthal did not actually serve Glick, but instead reported to the mob boss and performed a skimming operation.
Nevada gambling investigators later learned that it began in November.
Then, in May 1975, Glick opened Marina Casino, became a successful casino operator, and was praised by local business leaders and the media for his clean business records and heroic deeds in Vietnam.
He revolutionized sports betting in Las Vegas by adding a large and elaborate sportsbook to Stardust, where Siegfried and Roy became prominent.
Frank Balistrieri, the centers Milwaukee crime boss, has agreed to take out Glicks loan.He is depicted here where he left the federal court in 1983 with his sons Joseph and John.
Two of his hotel casinos, the Stardust Hotel and the Fremont Hotel, are still open.
In June 1978, the FBI sent agents to Las Vegas with 83 search warrants in a series of raids centered on Argent Corporations operations, based on wiretapping and other evidence.
And in 1979, the Nevada Gaming Control Agency quietly scooped about $ 7 million from slot machines between 1974 and 1976 on behalf of the Milwaukee, Chicago, Kansas City, and Cleveland families of Argent casino employees. I decided that it was.
As a result, Glick lost his casino license and sold his stake in Las Vegas in 1980. He later told federal agents that Nicholas Civella, the head of the Kansas City criminal family, threatened to kill his two sons if he did not sell the company.
Glick then returned to his home in San Diego for fear of his family and was finally able to find a reliable FBI agent.
He was unaware of skimming and vowed that federal prosecutors had never criminalized him in a scandal.
But in return, they demanded his cooperation as a witness before the two federal grand juries heard evidence against more than 12 top US gangsters.
According to the Mobster Museum, the government defended Glick in court as a terrifying tool in the underworld that is secretly responsible for financing from the corrupt Team Star Pension Fund.
Finally, in 1986, the gang was convicted and faced federal prison conditions.
Since then, Glick has lived with his family in a walled San Diego home until his death earlier this month.
He is survived by his wife Kathy. Son, Todd and Care League Rick. And grandchildren, Aaron and Adam Glick.

Lincoln City’s Chinook Winds Casino Is Closing Again for at Least Two Weeks Due to the Delta Variant – Willamette Week
Posted: at 7:47 am
Concerns about rising Delta variant cases just forced at least one Oregon casino to shut its doors again, canceling a slew of traditional end-of-summer celebrations, which typically draw Willamette Valley dwellers.
Chinook Winds in Lincoln City announced that it would be closing at 6 pm on Thursday, Aug. 12, due to the states soaring COVID-19 cases. That temporary halt is expected to last at least through Aug. 25, though the facility says it may last longer depending on whether the virus continues its rapid spread.
Despite the progress we have made to vaccinate our team, their families and the community, increases in cases in the county and state have led us to make the difficult decision to close our operations general manager Michael S. Fisher stated on the venues social media platforms. We will pay our team members through this two-week closure. We look forward to welcoming our guests and team members back as soon as its safe to do so.
The shutdown applies to the gaming floors, hotel, restaurants and golf course. Several events are also affected, including standup comedy shows originally scheduled for this weekend and the Surf City Oregon Coast Customs Car Show as well as an audio competition slated for Aug. 22 that normally packs the venue and its parking lot with attendees.
Chinook Winds says it will refund all room fees and entertainment tickets.
The resort isnt the only Lincoln County business that is abruptly halting service due to the pandemic. On Aug. 11, Newport Brewing Company shared on its Facebook account that it was closing after a COVID-19 exposure. The brewery will have all of its employees tested during the suspension and aims to reopen by Tuesday, Aug. 17.
According to Lincoln Countys Heath & Human Services website, 130 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past two weeks. The previous two-week count was 39 positive tests. That means, on average, the number of new cases each day now stands at 9.29 compared with 2.79 two weeks earlier.

New Casino, Hotel Complex Nears Completion in Fresno Foothills. When Will It Open? – gvwire.com
Posted: August 14, 2021 at 1:34 am
Work appears nearly complete on a new and larger Indian gaming casino complex less than 1,000 feet from the current Table Mountain site in the Fresno County foothills near Millerton Lake.
Construction began on the project to replace the existing casino in 2019.
Plans promised a 110,000 square-foot casino floor that will add more than 600 new gaming machines, expanded restaurant space, a 1,500-seat special event center, gift shop and childcare facility. Parking is expected to be expanded by 1,000 spaces in addition to the casinos existing 5-story garage.
The modern and sweeping design features a glass fronted hotel tower with 14 levels and 150 guest rooms a first at the Table Mountain property which began casino operations in 1987.
Altogether the new complex will offer 600,000 square feet of total space compared to the current 72,000 square foot casino-only venue.
An artists rendering of what the new casino will look like was shared alongside the environmental report provided by the Table Mountain Rancheria. (Image: Table Mountain Rancheria)
We want to build a facility that will sustain us for generations to come, said Dan Casas, the tribes legal counsel, in 2018.
The project is slated for completion this year, based on original estimates, but Table Mountain Rancheria leaders are being tight-lipped about a planned opening date.
Tribal leaders declined to answer questions from GV Wire about the status of the new complex.
Required roadwork and traffic signals leading into the new casino remain unfinished, according to Fresno County officials. Sonja Dosti, the countys public information officer, said those upgrades should be completed by November.
The current casino that now sits right next to the new casino will have its old facilities of 72,000 square footage converted into tribal governmental uses such as administrative offices or tribal services.
Officials estimated in 2018 that the new facilities would add a thousand jobs, increasing employment at Table Mountain to almost 1,454 positions.
The casino at the Table Mountain Rancheria is operated by the Monache tribe and Chukchansi band of Yokuts.
