Marylands six casinos combined to generate over $165 million in gaming revenue in September, contributing $69 million to the state.

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, September casino gaming revenues were up $21.7 million (15 percent) compared to September 2020, when gaming revenue was $144 million. Casinos were limited to 50 percent capacity in September 2020 due to COVID-19.

Contributions from last months casino gaming revenue totaled $69 million, including $50.1 million for the Education Trust Fund. Casino gaming revenues also support local communities and jurisdictions where the six casinos are located and Marylands horse racing industry.

In 2018, Maryland voters approved an amendment to the State Constitution to safeguard State video lottery terminal revenues for education purposes.

As described in the bill and the ballot question, supplemental funding must total at least $125 million in fiscal 2020, $250 million in fiscal 2021, and $375 million in fiscal 2022. 100 percent of the gaming revenues dedicated to public education must be supplemental funding in each year thereafter.

September Casino Gaming Revenue Tops $165M Conduit Street - Conduit Street

The Mohegan Sun casino announced Monday that it has suspended wagering on the WNBA after questions were raised over a potential conflict in taking bets on the Connecticut Sun, a team also owned by the Mohegan Tribe.

The issue came up after Gov. Ned Lamont opened the sportsbook last Thursday, the first day of legalized sports betting in Connecticut, by placing a $50 bet on the Sun to win its playoff game with the Chicago Sky.

The wager captured the attention of some experts and state lawmakers concerned about a potential conflict of interest with the Mohegan Sun accepting bets on the Sun, which plays in the arena located at the casino complex.

Casino officials said Monday that they decided over the weekend to suspend betting on the WNBA playoffs at the sportsbook.

"We are in the process of working with the WNBA to update our SOPs (standard operating procedures) and have decided to take WNBA wagering off until this is finalized," Jeff Hamilton, the Mohegan Sun's president and general manager, said in a statement.

When Connecticut lawmakers set up emergency regulations and legislation allowing for sports betting this fall, they barred Mohegan Sun employees, including those involved with the team, from placing bets at the sportsbook. They also prohibited anyone from betting on games involving UConn, Yale or any other university in the state.

But they did not prohibit the tribe from accepting bets on games involving the Connecticut Sun.

State Rep. Maria Horn, a Democrat who co-chairs the legislative committee that oversees gambling in Connecticut, said the potential conflict may be addressed in the next legislative session, when permanent regulations are approved for the state's three approved sportsbooks.

"We had been more concerned that nobody with a substantial interest in that team could bet on the team," she said Friday. "This is a major expansion [of gambling] and I would be very surprised if we got everything right in the first bite. I expect that we will go back and take a look at whether a tweak needs to be made."

The WNBA and NBA have an agreement that allows third-party sportsbooks in arenas in which teams play as long as they are separated from all arena common areas and accessible solely by those who are legally able to gamble.

The league did not respond to specific questions about how it would address any potential conflict with the Mohegan Sun taking bets on the Sun.

Three casinos are moving ahead in the Maryland sports betting license process.

On Wednesday, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission approved alternative licensing standards for:

Those casinos already hold Maryland gaming licenses, expediting the process for reviewing their qualifications.

Now, the three casinos head back to the Sports Wagering Application Review Commission, which will officially award the MD sports betting licenses. Following that step, Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency staff need to approve internal controls and operational requirements before issuing the licenses.

Were pleased to have these three applicants approved and move them along to SWARC, MLGCADirector John Martin said. Our team is diligently implementing the sports wagering law, and were one step closer to the first in-person wagers, which we hope will take place this fall.

The 17 retail sportsbooks named in MD sports wagering legislation will likely be several months ahead of online sportsbooks, as SWARC determines how it will award up to 90 competitively bid licenses.

Wednesdays meeting started with MLGCA staff requesting the authority to apply alternative licensing standards to qualified applicants.

The alternative standards apply if an applicant holds a valid gaming license in Maryland. The staff also asked for permission to apply alternative standards to an applicant that holds a sports wagering license in at least one of 16 states they determined to have similar gaming license standards as Maryland.

Marylands qualification standards for a casino-related license are identical to and specifically incorporated in the Sports Wagering Law, and are therefore, clearly sufficient for qualifying an applicant for sports wagering license on that basis, a staff memo reads.

MGM National Harbor, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore and Live! Casino and Hotel will move forward in the licensing process. The three casinos hold licenses issued by the MLGCC.

MLGCA staff will still conduct an extensive background investigation in due course.

All three applicants completed full applications and all required financial obligations. They also submitted an affidavit attesting to the minority and women-owned interests of the applicant.

The three casinos will open retail sportsbooks with significant operator partners.

Both BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook secured partnerships with the Baltimore Ravens this year, along with DraftKings.

The MLGCA wrapped up a public comment period on its sports betting regulations in September. MLGCA Managing Director of Organizational Compliance James Butler hopes the Maryland Register can publish the regulations Oct. 22.

Along with significant concerns about official league data requirements, some stakeholders also asked for an equal starting line for mobile sports betting in Maryland.

SWARC meets next Oct. 14 and and MLGCC will meet again Oct. 21.

The rapidly proliferating sports gaming industry scored another major victory on Thursday, as Churchill Downs Inc. announced plans to build a new casino-style venue in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. According to a report by the Associated Press, the new 43,000 square-foot venue named Derby City Gaming Downtown is projected to open in early 2023 a mere five miles away from the historic racetrack that plays host to the annual Kentucky Derby.

The venue is set to open with 500 historical horse racing machines, with the slot-type games allowing patrons to bet on randomly generated past horse races. Although casino gambling is illegal in the state of Kentucky, historical horse racing venues have been allowed to operate by state legislature. Churchill Downs Inc. projects that the new facility will generate anywhere from $10-12 million in additional purse money for Churchill Downs races as well as benefit the community at large.

"It is important that Louisville is a city that is thriving a great place to live, work and visit and we are committed to helping create economic vibrancy for every area of our community," read a statement by Churchill Downs Inc. CEO Bill Carstanjen.

The facility's downtown location will be situated near Louisville's convention center as well as a number of hotels, taking advantage of the city's tourism growth -- Louisville and its various distilleries have become popular spots for bourbon tourists. The facility will include an open-air gaming area, bars, and a retail store featuring Kentucky Derby-themed merchandise.

Derby City Gaming Downtown will be the second such location in Louisville, as another historical horse racing betting facility is already open in South Louisville. The continued existence of such venues was threatened last year when the Kentucky Supreme Court ruled that some forms of wagering on historical horse racing did not meet pari-mutuel wagering standards, but a measure to fix flaws cited by the court was passed by lawmakers earlier this year.

VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - One of the four Vigo County casino license applicants says they will make a presentation later this month on what plans to offer - if it does receive the license.

Full House Resorts will walk the public through plans for "American Place Terre Haute."

This is a $250 million gaming and entertainment proposal that's currently before the Indiana Gaming Commission.

Other information in the proposal:

If approved, American Place would develop a 32-acre site along I-70 near the State Road 46 interchange. Their current plan has them just east of the Pilot gas station.

News 10 received a press release on Wednesday that the public presentation will include a review of the current proposal, information on vendor and employment opportunities, and a question and answer session.

It will take place Thursday, October 21, at the Idle Creek Banquet Center from 7 pm to 9 pm.

Full House ResortsFull House Resorts first announced their plans to move a Rising Star Casino license to Terre Haute in 2018.

In 2018 we asked the vice president of Full House, Alex Stolyar, about the proposal.

"I think there was a lot of acceptance that Terre Haute is the right place for a new casino in Indiana, and they want to see competition for that opportunity, and we came back last year and said that we are open to competition," Stolyar said at the time.

What happens next?Last month, we learned the Indiana Gaming Commission should select the casino license winner on November 17.

Why are companies applying again?The gaming commission previously denied Lucy Luck's application for the casino. This decision reopened the process; however, Lucy Luck appealed the denial ruling.

At the time of the denial decision, the Commission said Lucy Luck did not have an executive team in place to run the casino and said casino operations were not fully funded. A lawyer for Lucy Luck refuted those claims. Local businessman Greg Gibson said his team 'worked their tails off' to make this a reality. He said there was a plan for a team, but that there weren't gaming operations actively happening.

Lucky Luck is still awaiting the decision on the appeal.

I have to admit my bias, because I believe that Scorcese cannot do wrong - ever. Even his lesser-known or critically panned films are above the "great film" line, and Casino is certainly no exception.

Casino spans three decades and chronicles the true story of a faction of the mob who ran Las Vegas casinos. Robert DeNiro plays Ace Rothstein, a fantastic bookie who is chosen to run the Tangiers hotel and casino. Along the way, he marries a drug-addicted con-artist trophy wife (Sharon Stone) and struggles with his friendship with loose-cannon Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci). Rothstein is a complicated figure in that he is not a heavy, yet he wields a lot of power due to the respect he has gained from his mob bosses back home.

Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci are both fantastic in their roles, and Sharon Stone actually turned out a non-irritating performance. As the viewer, you can't stand her, but that is the point. Scorcese's normal supporting cast are also involved in this film, including his great mother - even though she usually has incredibly minimal roles, they are always memorable.

Scorcese seems to have several different directing styles, and Casino follows in the tradition of Goodfellas as a pseudo-documentary. A lot of the exposition is revealed by the characters themselves in the form of voice-overs, and several scenes are filmed in documentarian fashion. The entire production however, is sleek and very quick. The use of music bears mentioning as well: Most Martin Scorcese films have an amazing soundtrack that adds to and enhances the scene. Being a child of the MTV age, I'm a sucker for good uses of music in films and Scorcese is a master. Scorcese doesn't just utilize the soundtrack, he makes it part of the storytelling - by the music, we chronologically know what time period we are witnessing, since one cannot rely on other factors, such as fashion alone. One of my favorite scenes in film which effectively involves music is actually from Casino - the very intense scene when the relationship between DeNiro, Stone and Pesci come to a head in the climax of the film. The pounding music cut throughout this scene is a cover of "Satisfaction" by Devo and the result is absolutely brilliant.

Being a complete film geek, I generally don't go to films that feature certain stars, I go to films by certain directors and Scorcese is one of them. While this was probably the tenth time I'd seen this film there were more things I noticed, and I'm sure I'll notice more upon my eleventh viewing. The man is a complete genius, and a gift to film - my suggestion is to watch some of his films, then check out his unbelievable series, "A Personal Journey with Martin Scorcese Through American Movies" which was done the same year as Casino. The series is essentially a primer on the history of film, sectioned off by film genres. You not only will experience his amazing intellect and massive knowledge of film history, but his incredible humility as well.

The hotel is very nice. Beautiful area in the Smoky Mountains. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is a must see if visiting the area, especially if losing too much money gambling! Also go to one of the bonfires during the week. The room was updated and very clean. View was terrible, but what do you expect for a comp. the casino is very large and was quite crowded. Masks are required but very little social distancing. No smoking in the casino is definitely a breath of fresh air! Having dinner was challenging. I was unable to find an available reservation online using Open Table. I went to Brio and the expected wait time was 20 minutes. Unfortunately, a power failure hosed up Brios computers and they were unable to seat anyone. Waited over an hour and gave up. Went to Wicked Weed for early dinner. Plank Salmon with brocolini was fabulous! Cous cous was a bit undercooked, but when your hungry, everything tastes good. Pam my server was attentive and friendly. They have a wonderful selection of brews. IPA ale was very good and reasonably priced. Other meals I had at the food court. Not a lot of choices, just a place to satisfy hunger. I will definitely be back.

Wells Fargo is selectively bullish on gaming and casino stocks.

Casino stocks have taken a hit recently, and the Dow Jones U.S. Gambling Total Stock Market Indexis down 6.6% since Sept. 7. General concerns about the Chinese economy coupled with fears over regulatory crackdowns and uncertainties surrounding a gaming law review in Macao have been major bearish catalysts for casino stocks. Wells Fargo analyst Daniel Politzer recently initiated coverage of a dozen gaming stocks and says investors need to be extremely selective, especially when it comes to Macao exposure. Instead, Politzer prefers stocks focused on Las Vegas and the U.S. online betting markets. Here are seven gaming stocks Wells Fargo recommends buying on the dip.

MGM Resorts International (ticker: MGM)

MGM Resorts is a global gaming company. Politzer estimates that Las Vegas currently accounts for about 45% of total normalized revenue, while regional U.S. casinos account for 28% and China accounts for about 23%. Politzer named MGM his top overall stock pick and says hes bullish on the companys high exposure to the Vegas market. The companys BetMGM app was also second in market share in aggregate U.S. online betting in the first half of 2021, accounting for about 20% of the market. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $55 price target for MGM stock, which closed at $43.85 on Sept. 29.

Flutter Entertainment PLC (PDYPY, FLTR.L)

Flutter Entertainment is the worlds largest bookmaker and owner of Paddy Power, BetFair and PokerStars. The company also holds a 95% ownership stake in online sports betting app FanDuel. FanDuel was the aggregate U.S. online betting leader in the first half of 2021 with a 26% market share, according to Wells Fargo. Politzer says Flutter will capture 27% of the $18.8 billion U.S. online gaming market by 2025. Flutter is also considering an independent listing of FanDuel stock in the U.S. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $243.64 price target on the London-listed FLTR.L stock, which closed at $204.21 on Sept. 29. U.S. investors can also find Flutter trading over the counter under the symbol PDYPY.

Boyd Gaming Corp. (BYD)

Boyd Gaming is a U.S. regional casino operator with heavy exposure to Las Vegas, which Politzer estimates accounts for about 30% of its earnings. Boyd has generated impressive margin expansion in recent quarters, and Politzer says much of that expansion is sustainable given its Las Vegas business has greater than 50% margins. In addition, Boyd owns the remaining 5% of FanDuel that Flutter doesnt own, a stake that Politzer estimates is worth about $1.3 billion. He says Boyds balance sheet is very healthy relative to peers. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $92 price target for BYD stock, which closed at $64.55 on Sept. 29.

Caesars Entertainment Inc. (CZR)

Caesars Entertainment operates 44 casino and entertainment properties in 13 U.S. states. The company leases about 25 of its 44 properties. Politzer estimates Caesars online betting business is worth about $42 per share and should gain market share over time. Politzer says Caesars is also an excellent potential Vegas recovery play in the near term. He projects Caesars is on track to grow free cash flow to about $10 per share by 2023, which will help the company pay down debt. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $137 price target for CZR stock, which closed at $113.40 on Sept. 29.

Churchill Downs Inc. (CHDN)

Churchill Downs is a U.S. horse racing, online gambling and regional gaming company. Politzer says the Kentucky gaming market is large and underpenetrated, creating significant growth opportunities for Churchill Downs. In addition, he says the Kentucky Derby in particular could be an economic rebound catalyst in 2022 due to pent-up event demand following the ongoing health crisis. The Churchill management team has an impressive track record of accretive capital allocation, and the company has a number of potential growth projects in its pipeline. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $255 price target for CHDN stock, which closed at $238.58 on Sept. 29.

DraftKings Inc. (DKNG)

DraftKings is an online betting and daily fantasy sports platform. The company is second in market share behind only FanDuel in the three largest state online sports betting markets in the U.S. DraftKings is a pure play in U.S. digital gaming, which Politzer says is the most attractive growth vertical in gaming. DraftKings controls about a 17% share of the U.S. online betting market, but Politzer says it can grow that share as the company fine-tunes its products and integrates recently acquired Golden Nugget Online Gaming assets. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $73 price target for DKNG stock, which closed at $48.32 on Sept. 29.

Red Rock Resorts Inc. (RRR)

Red Rock Resorts owns 10 gaming and entertainment facilities and 10 smaller casinos in the greater Las Vegas area. Politzer says Red Rocks recent uptick in margins should prove sustainable as the Vegas market recovers and Red Rocks nongaming revenues rebound. He estimates the companys Durango casino development is worth about $4 per share and says the companys valuable acreage creates opportunity for additional development catalysts down the road. Red Rock is the only Las Vegas casino pure-play investment, making it a potentially attractive Vegas rebound play. Wells Fargo has an overweight rating and a $62 price target for RRR stock, which closed at $51.89 on Sept. 29.
