Which of These Casino Stocks Is a Hotter Buy? – The Motley Fool

Casino-based resorts have certainly changed over the years. The word casino translates to "small house," and the first casinos were just that -- small, dimly lit gambling venues.
Over time, casinos evolved into colossal resorts, complete with entertainment, convention facilities, luxury shopping malls, theme parks, pools, and fine dining. These comprehensive resorts became known as integrated resorts, "integrating" multiple activities into one experience.
Below are two casino stocks whose companies have embraced the integrated resort model, one of which looks to be at a screaming discount.
Las Vegas Sands (LVS -1.32%) operates entirely in Asia, the world's biggest gaming market. With its expansive resorts in China and Singapore, the company's "Las Vegas" title is slightly deceiving -- although Sands is still headquartered there.
The self-described "world's leading integrated resort developer," Las Vegas Sands helped pioneer a new era in the casino experience. First launching the game-changing Las Vegas-based Venetian Hotel and Casino in 1999, Sands later expanded into Macau, China, and Singapore -- laying the groundwork for a thriving resort and gaming industry in Asia.
Sands sold its Las Vegas Venetian resort last year for $6.25 billion and now operates five expansive resorts in Macau, China -- including the Venetian Macau -- as well as one in Singapore. Fully focused on the Asian gaming market for the moment, Sands aims to grow its presence in Macau and Singapore while exploring new markets. With the easing of global travel restrictions, Sands anticipates a recovery and claims to be positioned "exceedingly well" for future growth.
In contrast to Sands' six resorts, MGM Resorts International (MGM -1.92%) boasts 32 resort destinations worldwide, spread across the U.S., China, and Japan. Not limited to physical resorts, the company also earns revenue from online sportsbook BetMGM.
Founded in 2018, BetMGM emerged as the product of a 50/50 partnership between MGM Resorts and Entain, one of the largest sports betting and gaming companies. Utilizing Entain's technology, BetMGM offers sports betting as well as other iGames including Borgata Casino, Party Casino, and Party Poker. MGM announced in May that it had reached the top spot among online sports betting venues, claiming a 25% share of a market estimated at $37 billion.
Continuously refining its portfolio of resorts, MGM recently announced the sale of its Gold Strike Tunica property and acquired operations of the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. MGM continues to pursue international expansion efforts as well, currently seeking integrated resort opportunities in Japan. MGM International Resorts looks well on its way to achieving its vision of being the world's premier gaming entertainment company.
To gauge which company is a better buy at the moment, let's compare the two companies using the price-to-sales ratio. Based purely on revenue, the price-to-sales (P/S) ratio can tell us whether a company is undervalued or overpriced -- the lower the P/S, the better.
With a far lower price-to-sales ratio, MGM Resorts International makes the better buy. Also, considering that MGM is profitable and Las Vegas Sands currently operates at a loss, MGM stock presents much more upside potential to investors at this time.

Online sports betting: Fight over California propositions pits tribes against one another – Cronkite News

Tribal casinos are a main source of revenue for Native communities in California, but not all tribes have them. (Photo courtesy of Yaamava Resort & Casino at San Manuel)

LOS ANGELES California voters next month will decide between two competing ballot measures involving sports betting that would dramatically alter legalized gambling in the state, a struggle that underscores the have and have-not divide between the states native tribes.
The newest chapter of this long-standing divide comes more than a year after Arizona legalized online sports wagering. Now, California may follow suit with Propositions 26 and 27 on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Proposition 26 would allow in-person betting on professional sports in 66 tribal-owned casinos and four racetracks in California. Additionally, it would allow tribes to offer more Las Vegas-style games, including roulette and craps, not just blackjack, bingo and slot machines
Proposition 27 would go much farther, allowing online betting. Gamblers could wager from their computers or smartphones, never setting foot in a casino. Although casino-owning tribes would be allowed to offer off-site betting, the real beneficiaries appear to be large national wagering concerns, like DraftKings and FanDuel, that accept bets from a growing number of states, including Arizona.
Its unclear what would happen if both are approved, a scenario that could wind up being settled in a courtroom.
In 2021, Arizona became the 23rd state to legalize online sports betting. In its first year, Arizonans wagered more than $5 billion, exceeding the expectations of many.
The dueling propositions have split California tribes. The Yes on 26 campaign touts support from more than 50 tribes while alleging that the opposing camp, Yes on 27, has the support of just three.
This is a skirmish in a larger war, said Dan Walters, columnist for CalMatters, a nonpartisan, nonprofit state news organization. And its not probably going to be the end of the war. Its probably just going to continue on in some other form no matter what happens this year.
According to Walters, the proposition is one of many attempts to address gambling in California since President Ronald Reagan signed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Actof 1988, which allowed federally recognized Native American tribes to operate casinos on their own lands.
There are 66 tribal casinos in 28 California counties, according to the states Legislative Analysts Office. Some, including Pala Casino Spa Resort and Pechanga Resort Casino near Temecula and Yaamava Resort & Casino in Highland, aim to rival some of the larger hotel-casinos in Las Vegas.
As larger casinos grew in popularity and fueled substantial local economies, Walters said, tensions grew between tribes with casinos and those without. For example, smaller tribes in more remote areas do not have the same advantages as tribes adjacent to major highways, he said.
Most of the tribes do not benefit from the Indian gambling phenomenon, Walters said, but the ones that do have the casinos (that) reap enormous amounts of money. Theres no question about that. Theyre very profitable. And so you have, essentially, a jealousy between the haves and the have-nots within the Indian community.
Patricia Martz, professor emerita at California State University, Los Angeles, said much of this revenue already goes to the communities where casinos are located, but it also goes to neighboring tribes for such services as housing, education and health.
The California Legislative Analysts Office reports that larger tribal casinos give nearly $150 million to smaller tribes that either do not own casinos or operate casinos with fewer than 350 slot machines. Additionally, tribes paid about $65 million to support state regulation and gambling addiction programs.
Proposition 27 includes a provision to raise revenue to reduce homelessness and boost mental health services, but Martz said the money wouldnt help much and would remove a source of funds tribes need to help their members.
The amount that they (Proposition 27) would give really doesnt offset the harm that the proposition would do, Martz said. It seems to me its a no-brainer that people are against it.
That point is being pushed as well by the Yes on 26, No on 27 campaign.
If 27 passes, it is a severe blow to tribal self-sufficiency, spokesperson Kathy Fairbanks said. If it were to pass, it would really undercut tribes and their brick-and-mortar casinos and their ability to provide for their people. It would not be good.
Despite multiple requests, the Yes on 27 campaign did not respond for comment.
After reaching out to multiple casino-owning tribes for comment, Cronkite News was unable to secure an interview or direct statement in time for publication of this article.

Sept 27 (Reuters) - Star Entertainment Group (SGR.AX) on Tuesday accepted the findings of an inquiry that stated the casino operator unfit to hold a licence in Sydney, but said it should be permitted to continue operating under "strict supervision".
The country's second-biggest casino operator said in a statement that it has developed a remediation plan, outlining actions to address "root-cause failings" mentioned in the inquiry report released earlier this month.
Australia's casino sector has faced intense scrutiny over the last three years after Star's larger rival Crown Resorts was found unfit to hold gambling licences on account of money laundering, prompting some states to launch investigations.

The New South Wales (NSW) state gambling regulator had said its report identified "systemic governance, risk and cultural failures" at Star's Sydney casino. read more
"Huge amounts of money were disguised by the casino as hotel expenses and vast sums of cash evaded anti-money laundering protocols several times, mostly through a secret room with a second cash cage," NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford had said.
NICC should allow the company to "continue to operate the licence, under strict supervision and being held accountable to the milestones on the Remediation Plan," Star said on Tuesday.
Star said its remediation plan will focus on a "multi-year transformation" of governance, accountability, culture, and risk and compliance-management practices.
The casino operator plans to finalize the budget for the remediation plan over the next month and conclude the plan by the end of 2024.

Will Macau Ever Be The World’s Casino Capital Again? – Forbes

Ghost Town: After a strict Covid policy, Macau finally opened its borders to nonresidents in September 2022.
Macau is on a serious losing streak.
Once known as the Las Vegas of the Eastdespite revenue three times that of Sin City in 2019Macau has been humbled by the pandemic.
The special administrative region (SAR) of China reported its first case of Covid on January 20, 2020, and the governments response was swift. Chinas zero-Covid policy forced the brief closure of Macaus casinos and soon its borders were closed to nonresidents. With Macau essentially cut off from the world, including nearby Hong Kong, annual gambling revenue fell by 80%. The region reported a mere $7.55 billion in 2020, compared with the year before when gamblers lost $36.3 billion in Macanese casinos. Last year, revenue was still down 70%$10.83 billioncompared to pre-pandemic levels.
The real Las Vegas, meanwhile, has been dealt a much better hand. Blessed by a robust recovery, it brought in $11.44 billion in gambling revenue last year, a 10% increase over 2019. Overall, Nevada has been enjoying an astonishing winning streakreporting 17 straight months in which gaming revenue exceeded $1 billion.
It took a lethal, highly contagious virus and strict government regulations from China, but Vegas is currently king of the casino industry. But no one believes that reign will last long. Brendan Bussmann, the managing partner of B Global, a consulting firm focused on gaming and hospitality, says a healthy Macanese casino economy has historically been three times the size of Vegas. The current pecking order with Vegas on top is strictly due to incredible circumstances.
Vegas came back just as Macau will come back; its just a matter of time, says Bussmann. Were at a collapsed point, but theres only one place to go, which is up.
Casinos in the former Portuguese colony are now open and functioning, but the Asian gambling capital is nowhere close to a recovery. Chinas Covid policy is still a threat to the gaming industry. The last time the government shut down casinos in Macau was a 12-day period in July. Macau still remains a conundrum over when it will fully reopen, says Bussmann. It is one Covid case away from shutting back down.
Rob Goldstein, the CEO of Las Vegas Sandswhich has five properties in Macau, including the Venetiansaid during an earnings call in June that the company hasnt lost faith in the island that was responsible for 59% of its Ebitda in 2019.
We retain great optimism and our ability to perform to prepandemic levels and beyond in Macau, once visitation returns, said Goldstein, explaining that tourism rate is at 16% of prepandemic levels. We would welcome the opportunity to invest billions of additional dollars in Macau. We continue to believe Macau is now outstanding market for additional investment.
Las Vegas Sands, which was founded by the late billionaire entrepreneur Sheldon Adelson, has invested $15 billion in Macau since it opened its first casino there in 2004. Recently, the company has invested $2.2 billion to build a new project on the Cotai Stripthe Londoner Macao, complete with a replica of the U.K. Parliament and Big Ben, the Londoner Court and the Grand Suites at Four Seasons Macao. After the company sold its Las Vegas properties to affiliates of Apollo Global Management, Inc. and VICI Properties Inc. for $6.25 billion in February 2022, the company, which also operates the Marina Bay Sands casino in Singapore, is essentially an Asian gaming company.
Chad Beynon, a managing director and equity analyst at Macquarie Securities, expects Macaus gambling revenue to recover to 2019 levels by 2024. The Chinese government is expected to lift the quarantine rules in Hong Kong, where the government mandated three days in a hotel and four days of monitoring at home, in October. Historically, most visitors come by ferry from Hong Kong, which is only about an hour ride. [The quarantine rules] were massively restrictive, and not worth it, says Beynon. Macau is a day-trip market, most people go over on a ferry, and they come back at night. It's like going to Staten Island from Manhattan.
While the timing of the recovery is uncertain, the gaming license renewal process brings even more uncertainty to the region. All licenses for the six gaming operators in Macau, which includes the Asian subsidiaries of Las Vegas Sands, MGM International and Wynn Resorts, expire at the end of 2022. A bidding process for a new ten-year license to operate in the market opened last week. All six current operators had been expected to get renewals, but Genting Group, the Malaysian gaming and cruise company run by billionaire Lim Kok Thay, submitted a last-minute bid, according to Wall Street Journal.
Theres now a possibility that all three Western companies will not have their licenses renewed, but that would send a strong protectionist message that could chill other U.S.-based investors in China. The six incumbent concessionaires would say that they've done everything that's been asked of them in terms of employing locals, in terms of building what the government wanted them to build, particularly the Western companies, Benyon says. They've spent billions upon billions building what the government wanted.
Until some of the questions about licenses and tourism are resolved, exactly when Macau will recover remains uncertain. Dan Wasiolek, a senior equity analyst at Morningstar who covers the gaming and hospitality industry, says Macau will likely feel more pain before a rebound. Going into 2022, I think most people following this space, ourselves included, thought that we would see somewhat of a recovery, says Wasiolek. We've seen the opposite. This year, its actually going to be a drop-off.
Coming Up Empty: Macau reported its first case of Covid in January 2020and tourism is now at 16%.
Macau is still a good long-term bet, analysts say. Compared to Las Vegas, which is a mature market where the average return on investment is in the single digits, Macau, once it recovers, will give investors double-digit returns on capital, Wasiolek explains. Wasiolek expects a recovery by the end of 2024 or perhaps the beginning of 2025, but that is rife with a possible downside. There could be a million reasons that make that prediction incorrect, he says.
Despite the drastic downturn, Wasiolek believes two elements remain safe bets about Macauthe near term is highly uncertain, and the long-term outlook remains bright, he says. Were just waiting for China to exhale and to allow things to return to normal, he says. Macau will rise again.

The major U.S. index futures are pointing to a lackluster start for Wall Street on Monday, as sentiment about the economy and market continue to be downbeat.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite and the S&P 500 Index settled at their lowest level since June 17, while the blue-chip Dow Industrials retreated to its lowest since Nov. 2020.

The U.S. dollar is higher across the board, and it is notably higher against the U.K. pound, which has pulled back over 1.4% in reaction to the tax cuts announced by the new government.
Asian stocks fell across the board on Monday as recession worries gripped traders. South Koreas Kospi fell over 3%, leading the losses in the region.
The major European markets opened Mondays session lower but saw a modest recovery in early trading only to lose momentum and fall sharply by the late morning session.
Also, souring sentiment is the German Ifobusiness climate index for September, which declined from the previous month and trailed expectations as well.
In a major geopolitical development in the region, Giorgia Meloni is all set to take over as Italys first woman prime minister following Sundays elections in what is expected to be the most right-wing government ever in the country since World War II.

KYC Verification In Online Casinos, Is It Necessary? – Intelligent Living
Posted: at 8:17 am
For a couple of years, KYC has been a huge topic in the realm of online gambling. Today it is one of the best-known practices of this kind and the one that makes a massive difference. KYC stands for Know Your Customer, which is very common in online casinos.
There aresome brands without verificationavailable for UK players. But in general, a user or a gambler will have to provide ID document photos, photos, and much more to prove their identity and information. It is mandatory at most casinos, but why? Well, there are a few reasons for that.
First of all, we have to reveal why KYC is so important and so beneficial. At the end of the day, it all comes to these few reasons, and most of them are already known to some of you. Even if you are a new player in the world of online gambling, you can deduce that these reasons are important and do affect the whole process.
One of the main reasons that is very interesting is that KYC makes the online gambling environment safer. It makes it impossible for users to use illegal activities; hence they must obey all the rules and must gamble legally. This has a huge effect on all gamblers. If there is one person who scams others, the whole gambling realm would be bad and negative. KYC makes this impossible and makes gambling safer for us all.
If we know that gambling authorities control online casinos, we can deduce that KYC is mandatory because the authorities want to make online gambling safer and more appealing to all people.
Without KYC, you can be anyone you like on the web or at online casinos. You can use any funds for any purpose. If we know that online casinos are loaded with funds and generate or control huge amounts of money per day, money laundering is an ideal criminal activity in this case scenario. This is probably the main reason whyKYC is requiredby operators and why it is so important and so beneficial. It simply blocks the ability to launder money at online casinos. Here, we must add that this has another effect on the first reason. It makes the gambling environment even safer and more appealing.
Without KYC, some people would use online gambling and casinos to the extreme. It is easy to launder money in this way, and it is something that most criminals know about. KYC puts an end to this.
KYC is there to make responsible gaming possible. This means that, due to KYC, people aged 18 or under 21 in the United States cannot play casino games. You have to prove your identity, and the casino will refuse your account if you are an underage player.
Underage gambling has been a huge issue for most casinos across the world, and it is something that is very dangerous. Remember that gambling addiction is possible and common among people under 18. Thanks to KYC, this is decreased, which once again makes online gambling safer.
The main reason for that is the lack of anonymity. Some gamblers want to stay hidden while playing. They dont like sharing personal data and files that can prove their gambling activity. Other players simply refuse or dislike sharing data with third parties. This does make sense. Nobody wants to provide a photo of his ID document or to send personal information to unknown organizations or people.
We must add the KYC is a safe process, and the data will not be shared with anyone else. If you provide the data needed to complete KYC, you are safe, and the data will remain on secure servers, not being shared with others. But still, many people are skeptical about all of this. They dont like nor want to provide the data. Remember that you will have to provide details such as your address, telephone number, employment, ID document scan, and more. There are many files and details you have to provide.
At the end of the day, all we can add is that KYC is important and will probably become even more important in the near future. In ourtechnologicalworld, it is essential to verify users. More and more online casinos require it due to laws from gambling authorities. As such, we can see that KYC will become a massive part of all this and make your online gambling session safer.
Yes, many more people will be skeptical about all of that and will look for a way around it. But we believe that some compromise would be a nice solution to all of that. More people should accept KYC. It is there for your safety and to make online gambling safer as well.

The Production Of Casino Royale Had To Be Careful Not To Set Off The ‘Austin Powers Alarm’ – /Film
Posted: at 8:17 am
Keeping "Casino Royale" firmly in the realm of reality wasn't too much of a challenge for the Bond brain trust. With Craig's commitment to the gritty material and of course, a rock solid directoron deck the Bond franchise was born anew.
While Craig himself found his own way to bring the character into the 21st century, other developments were spurred by an aversion to the "Austin Powers" films. The actor told The Guardian that there was an "Austin Powers alarm" on the set of "Casino Royale." That limited the use of gadgetry and spiffy, semi-aquatic cars not only in Craig's inaugural film, but in most of those that came after. Even with the introduction of a new Q (Ben Whishaw) in "Skyfall," the new Bond films kept the gadgets subtle. They even made a dig at the "exploding pens" and other kooky memorabilia that previous Bonds used. It was all in an effort to abandon the things that "Austin Powers" had skewered so liberally. "If something's been parodied as much as that, there's a reason for it," Craig explained.
That's not to say that those gadgets and cars didn't have their place in other Bond films. "I love the fact that Roger Moore drives a Lotus into the water and it becomes a submarine. It's a great movie moment," Craig added. But "Casino Royale" was a very different movie one with a very different mission.

There is not a consensus age requirement for gambling in the United States. Gaming rules and age restrictions are different, depending on the type of gambling in specific states and on tribal lands.
Casino.org created a quick list of gambling age requirements to clarify any questions you might have if youre headed to a casino, playing online poker, or interested in placing an online sports bet.
The American gambling industry takes age minimums seriously. Teenagers do not always make judicious decisions, especially with money, which is why theres a 21-year-old age requirement for a majority of gambling establishments.
As a general rule of thumb, most gambling in the United States both live casino gambling and online gambling has a minimum requirement of 21-years-old, with some exceptions at tribal casinos, where the minimum age is 18-years-old. Of course, there are several exceptions, which we will detail below.
If you want to visit a casino in America, you will have to at least 21-years-old. This includes gambling destinations like Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno, Tunica, and Biloxi.
However, there are four states with an age minimum of 18-years-old to gamble in live casinos: Rhode Island, Wyoming, Montana, and Oklahoma.
In Oklahoma, casinos that do not sell alcohol can allow 18-year-olds to gamble. However, if casinos in Oklahoma want to serve liquor and beer to patrons, then all gamblers must be at least 21-years-old.
Tribal lands do not adhere to local state gambling laws and set their own age requirements. Most casinos on tribal lands have a minimum gambling age of only 18-years-old. Those casinos can be found on tribal lands in California, Idaho, Washington, New York, Michigan, and Minnesota.
Turning Stone Casino is located on Oneida Indian Nation tribal land in upstate New York. Turning Stone has been a popular destination for college students in the Northeast that cannot legally gamble in Atlantic City, or in Connecticut.
Only six states have legalized betting in online casinos. That exclusive list includes New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. All six states have a minimum age requirement of 21-years old.
Nevada offers online poker and online sports betting, but they want their residents to visit real brick-and-mortar casinos rather than gambling in a virtual online casino.
In Europe, horse racing is considered the sport of kings and royalty. Prior to her death, Queen Elizabeth II was a renowned horse bettor and astute handicapper.
In the United States, horse racing has been dying out. It reached its peak of popularity with the baby boomer generation, because it was one of the few legal gambling options in America after World War II. Racetracks were prevalent across America before individual states legalized gambling.
With the horse racing industry trying to remain relevant with a younger generation, most racetracks in America have a minimum age requirement of 18-years-old, with a handful of exceptions.
You must be 21 or older if you want to bet on horses in Arizona, Iowa, Nevada, and Texas. In every other state, 18-year-olds can legally wager on the ponies.
Over the last decade, daily fantasy sports, or DFS, has become a popular past time. Many states view daily fantasy sports as a game of skill, which is why most states in the union have a DFS age requirement of 18 and older.
There are a couple of exceptions, of course, where aspiring DFS bettors must wait until they turn 19 to fill out their daily fantasy rosters. That includes Alabama and Nebraska.
DFS Minimum Age Requirement (19 and Older)
There are four states Arizona, Iowa, Massachusetts, and Louisiana where you must be 21 or older to participate in daily fantasy sports.
You can legally wager on sports in 20 states plus Washington, D.C. Sports betting has a 21-year-old age requirement in 16 states.
Theres an under-21 exception in five markets. Residents of Rhode Island, Oregon, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and Washington, DC are allowed to place sports bets at age 18.
Washington, D.C. is a little weird. You can only place sports bets in person at kiosks near Capitol One Arena and Nationals Park. If youd like to place online sports bets, youre limited to a specific app called GambleDC.
Only six states can legally host online poker as of 2022, and all participants must show proof of being 21 or older.
Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan are the only states where you can play legal online poker.
In the United Kingdom and Australia, theres a minimum age requirement of 18-years-old to legally gamble.
You must wait until youre 20-years-old to gamble in New Zealand, unless its horse racing. where 18 is the cutoff.
In Canada, the minimum age is 18 or 19, depending on the province and/or activity.
Most of Europe has an 18-year-old age requirement to gamble with three notable exceptions. Gamblers must be at least 21-years old in Germany, Belgium, and Ireland.
Greece has the strictest gambling regulations, with a minimum age requirement of 23-years-old.
In Asia, 21 is the consensus age requirement in casinos, especially in hotspots like Macau, Singapore, and the Philippines.
However, South Korea has a gambling requirement of only 19-years-old.
