An F1 Esports Racer Heads to Formula 2 Will Sports Always Take Precedence Over Esports? – Esports News UK

Turkish racing enthusiast, Cem Bolukbasi, started his career off in some unconventional means. The esports star was racing with the best in Formula 1 sim racing, before he gave it up to drive a non-virtual car on a non-virtual course for the very non-virtual Formula 2.

Why did he make the switch from Formula 1 esports to Formula 2? Why did he give up the potential fame and money of esports for the Formula 2 racecourse? We explore here.

Olympics are just around the corner

Last years Olympics were hosted by Japan, and even if you dont know much about Japan, youll probably still know that they love their games. They have a rich history in the games industry. In that way, it wouldve made sense for Tokyo to be the first Olympics that featured esports.

Alas, that didnt happen, but it doesnt mean the jig was up. While esports didnt officially feature at the Olympics, the Intel World Open ran ahead of the opening ceremony, featuring esports. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) does sometimes honour activities in this way sports that dont always fit their idea of an Olympic sport.

Some have bemoaned esports lack of physicality as to why it shouldnt be included in the Olympics, but regardless, its a competitive activity thats here to stay. Esports players have fast reflexes, matches are intense and its exciting to watch, much like traditional sports. Plus, some games in the Olympics arent that physical or heart-pounding, like archery, when compared to other activities.

Its still possible we could see esports included in the Olympics in the future of course. And just this week, it was announced that esports will be a part of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Esports can be useful for practicing

Some athletes in mainstream sports, like footballers, use gaming as a means to switch off and take some downtime. Others use simulations to play out potential strategies and think about how they should react in any given situation, like F1 drivers using a simulation. Like anything else, a part of it is practice, which esports and iGaming (or online gambling) offers.

A lot of online casino operators in Ireland such as casumo.com/ie offer opportunities to practice your skills in classic games for use in real-time games. Examples include poker, bingo, etc.

While playing tons of hours on a game like FIFA isnt necessarily going to make you an amazing real life footballer or good at another sport, formula racing is an exception, as previously stated. The simulation is about as close to the real thing as you can get without sitting in your seat yourself, and other sports dont really come as close.

Esports doesnt need validation

The esports industry has been growing steadily in recent years. Last year, Newzoo said that global esports revenues would grow to $1.084bn in 2021, a year-on-year rise of 14.5% from $947.1 million in 2020, and that the worldwide esports audience would reach 474m last year. Those numbers are only expected to go up as time goes on.

The whole esports versus sports debate has been going on for years now but does it matter? There are football fans, there are golf fans, there are esports fans. And they are all very dedicated to their sport. Fans follow their favourite players in sports and esports and are happy to pay to support them, whether its buying a jersey or making a stream donation for example.

When youre doing what you love and youre making a living from it, the validation from a board of Olympic directors wont matter. As the Financial Times said in its article: The Olympics need esports more than esports need the Olympics.

"April was our only chance to ensure ICE would be able to run in 2022, which is our duty of care to the entire gaming industry" – Yogonet…

Posted: at 6:35 am

Following recent withdrawals of a number of exhibitors from ICE London 2022, Stuart Hunter, Managing Director of Clarion Gaming, the company organizing the event that will be held April 12-14 at ExCeL, spoke with Yogonet and expressed his respect and support to the "predominantly" land-based clients that have postponed their attendance until February 2023, given their current trading conditions and the new dateline not being ideal for their business. He said Clarion is currently focused on working with a selection of brands that wish to retain a presence at ICE London via sponsored experiences.

Hunter also noted that the Omicron variant spread situation in the UK continues to improve, government regulations on international travel effective February 11 have normalized travel into England, and ICE London has "significant support from major gaming industry brands." He cited feedback showing that the events are already running safely and effectively in venues across the UK and have generated a "hugely positive" response from buyers and sellers alike. April will see "the biggest and most dynamic gathering of the industry ironically since the previous edition of ICE," he told Yogonet.

Could you outline the process leading to April 12-14 as the chosen dates for ICE London? Which have been the main challenges Clarion Gaming had to overcome in order to have those dates confirmed at ExCeL London?

I would like to open by confirming that moving ICE London to April is very much a one-off and a last resort due to the absence of any alternative dates for an exhibition of this size and scale. When it became clear that the original February dates did not give the industry sufficient confidence in terms of concern regarding the Omicron variant we set in motion a reach-out programme to connect with our community of exhibitors, sponsors and attendee groups. Migrating events that are the size and scale of ICE and the co-located iGB Affiliate London represents an enormous challenge and we worked tirelessly through the Christmas period with our colleagues at ExCeL to identify and secure an alternative date. We only really had two potential solutions both sitting either side of the Easter break in April. Neither of them perfect solutions, but our only chance to ensure ICE would be able to run in 2022. ExCeLs support was essential and involved the migration of six other events to enable ICE to have the entirety of ExCeL which is the space required to operate at full capacity. To illustrate the level of demand that exists for space at ExCeL the venue has confirmed that it will host a total of 350 live events during 2022. We appreciate that the new dates do not suit everyone and we will continue to work through any remaining challenges with our clients and support them with their preparations and planning for what is the worlds biggest and most influential gaming industry gathering.

You recently announced that a large number of industry decision-makers will be at ICE London can you expand on that?

The news piece you are referring to which puts the importance of ICE London into sharp focus is based on a large-scale research initiative that we commissioned from independent market research agency Explori covering 1,211 industry professionals, 77% of whom were final decision makers or part of the final decision-making group. The results showed that close to three out of four industry professionals (74%) pre-registering for ICE confirmed that they intend to be part of the London experience when the exhibition returns to ExCeL London (April 12 - 14). It also underlined the importance attributed to the worlds largest business-to-business gambling exhibition. 81% of respondents saw ICE London as being either fairly or very important to attend with the main purpose being to acquire new suppliers and partners (67% of respondents), gain an overview of the market (56%) and to be inspired by new ideas (53%). The fact this research chimes with the responses to a survey undertaken by the European Casino Association of its members confirms the huge importance the international industry places on attending ICE London.

We have seen support from key industry stakeholders and associations. What role are trade bodies and ICE Ambassadors playing in this new situation?

Weve received and continue to receive widespread support from influential organisations including the European Casino Association, the Gambling Business Group, EUROMAT and of course from our ICE Ambassadors, a collection of thought leaders who represent the interests and thinking of the industry. Organisations and bodies such as these serve as a great source of inspiration for the Clarion team and provide an invaluable sounding board.

Can you provide an update on Omicron and what visitors to London can expect?

Whilst the situation with regards to Covid has improved significantly in the UK we remain totally committed to delivering safe and secure editions of ICE London and iGB Affiliate London. In terms of specific changes, at the end of January the UK Government moved to a new more relaxed response level which has involved a significant easing of Covid restrictions including the end of mandatory face masks and a relaxation of the rules applying to Covid Certification Passports and social distancing. In addition, from February 11th vaccinated international travellers will not have to test for Covid on arrival in England: this is a major development that will encourage more visitors to make the journey to London and be part of the ICE experience. I support the view of lead bodies such as UKHospitality and UKinbound that the lifting of restrictions represents a pragmatic step towards normality, they also show that the UK and ICE London are very much open for business. Clarion took a proactive and collaborative approach to Covid, contributing to the drafting and refinement of the widely adopted All Secure Risk Assessment Framework a best-practice guide for events professionals delivering bio-secure events. Our protocols, which have been fully-tested, have the ability to deliver an ICE experience that will be both safe and business-friendly.

Land-based exhibitors including Novomatic, Merkur Gaming, Zitro and TCS John Huxley have announced that they will not be part of ICE London 2022 how do you respond to this?

Our utmost respect, care and support goes out to our predominantly land-based clients that have postponed their attendance at ICE this year until February 2023, due to the current trading conditions and the new dateline not being ideal for their business. We respect their decision and are currently focussed on working with a selection of brands that wish to retain a presence at ICE London via some exciting sponsored experiences that we are working on. I would like to stress that they are postponing their attendance until next year for reasons surrounding the date, the market conditions post-pandemic and remaining concerns that they have surrounding Omicron. We view our customers as representing lifetime relationships this is something thats non-negotiable from our perspective. However, we have a responsibility and a duty of care to the entire gaming industry to deliver ICE London this year. Combined with our IGB Affiliate London event which co-locates with ICE, we will see over 600 gaming companies in attendance by far the biggest business gaming event in the world. The road to ICE was always going to be a challenging one, made even more so due to the arrival of the Omicron variant. However, the conditions in the UK are much improved and we are excited to welcome the industry to London in April, which represents the only opportunity we have to deliver ICE this year. So we are grateful for the support of the wider industry and are focussed on ensuring their experience at ICE in just over two months is truly valuable and acts as a landmark opportunity to see colleagues, customers, regulators and for the global industry to reunite for the first time since February 2020. While the at show experience will be slightly different from 2020, ICE London 2022 remains the largest and most influential exhibition in world gaming. It is going to be something special!

How are other events in the UK faring?

Our trade body, the Association of Event Organisers (AEO), represents companies responsible for running 1,700 events a year, the majority (1,000) of which are held outside the UK so they have a comprehensive view of the global industry. The message coming from the AEO is that UK exhibitions are safe, secure, open for business and providing a Covid secure welcome to visitors and exhibitors from throughout the world. Thanks to the success of the vaccination programme the UK is leading the world in terms of re-opening, and is very much open for business. UK event organisers continue to use the All Secure Guidelines, previously approved by government officials, which is a dynamic risk assessed approach to create safe environments for customers. Venue research conducted by the AEO indicates that customers feel safe and secure, and whilst not a mandatory requirement many initiatives such as improved ventilation, and enhanced cleaning regimes are now standard practice. Those planning to attend ICE London/iGB Affiliate London, should be encouraged and re-assured that shows are already running safely and effectively in venues across the UK and have generated a hugely positive response from buyers and sellers alike. The feedback from companies that have staged events this year is that whilst they are smaller than they were pre-pandemic there is huge pent-up demand from buyers and that exhibitors are doing fantastic business and re-booking for next year. The satisfaction scores and re-booking rates are in many cases higher than they were prior to March 2020.

How important are Events to the industry does in-person still have a role?

The answer to this is absolutely yes. Our experience running iGB Live! and iGB Affiliate Amsterdam five months ago demonstrated quite how much the industry has missed the opportunity to meet face-to-face and the huge commercial value of being able to do so. All of the research weve undertaken, all of the anecdotal comments, all of the conversations that we are having confirm the power of in-person. Official events industry data confirm that nearly seven out of ten buyers (69%) will recommend brands that they have engaged with at events. Theres no doubt that the return of in-person represents a major opportunity for businesses and industries to bounce-back after a torrid two-years.

Some final words for those weighing up a visit to ICE London?

For a major international show such as ICE London, the return to in-person after a two-year absence was never going to be simple. However, whilst the dynamic of what visitors will experience at ICE London 2022 will be different, we will still have 450 world leading brands on the show floor plus the 160 at the co-located iGB Affiliate making April the biggest and most dynamic gathering of the industry ironically since the previous edition of ICE. The Omicron situation in the UK continues to improve, government regulations on international travel, effective 11th February, have normalised travel into England and ICE London has significant support from major gaming industry brands and large swathes of the international industry. Add to this the access visitors will have to initiatives and features such as Pitch ICE, the International Casino Conference, World Regulatory Briefing, the ICE VOX conference programme, Consumer Protection Zone, our brand-new Hosted Meetings Programme and the most comprehensive demonstration and analysis of the Esports phenomenon, all of which contribute to the overall ICE London experience. Its been too long since the industry has been able to meet face-to-face and we are looking forward to bringing everyone together to celebrate the return of the industry in a safe and a secure environment. In these respects, the UK and ICE London are very much open for business and we will do whatever it takes to deliver an unforgettable celebration when the industry meets in London in April.

GGRAsia Macau to have 6 casino licences, lasting 10 years: govt bill – GGRAsia

Posted: January 17, 2022 at 8:10 am

Jan 14, 2022 Newsdesk Latest News, Macau, Top of the deck

The Macau authorities announced on Friday some of the key aspects of a bill proposing a new regulatory system for gaming that will shape how the industry looks for years ahead.

Macaus Executive Council, an advisory body to the citys Chief Executive, stated that there would be a maximum of six concessions, under the government-backed bill. It would end the existing sub-concession model.

It added that the concession period would be a maximum of 10 years, but it could be extended by a further 3 years under exceptional circumstances. The existing six concessions due to expire in June covered a 20-year lifespan.

(Read the full press release from the Executive Council: Chinese version and Portuguese version).

Three of the current six operators namely Sands China Ltd, MGM China Holdings Ltd, and Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd were allowed into the market via a piece of legal improvisation. They actually hold their gaming rights via sub-concessions spun off from the three original concessionaires selected via a 2002 public tender. The three original concessions were the locally-incorporated units of Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd, SJM Holdings Ltd and Wynn Macau Ltd.

The freshly-announced bill is to be sent to the citys Legislative Assembly, to be voted on by its members. The length of time that procedure will take depends on the citys legislators, who can also propose changes to the bill.

During Fridays press conference (pictured), the Executive Council spokesperson, Andr Cheong Weng Chon (pictured centre), admitted the Legislative Assembly could take some time reviewing the bill. He said the Macau government would consider extending the duration of the existing concessions in order to provide lawmakers with enough time to complete the review process.

More details on the matter would be disclosed at a later stage, said Mr Cheong, who is also Macaus Secretary for Administration and Justice.

The government has said previously Macaus gaming law needs to be updated as a linked issue to a fresh public tender process for Macau gaming rights.

The bill also states that the firm actually holding the casino concession would only be allowed to have up to 30 percent of its shares listed publicly. That was in order to ensure a more stable relationship between the concessionaire and Macau, stated a press release from the Executive Council.

None of the current Macau casino firms listed either in Hong Kong or the United States, directly owns its respective Macau licence. That is done via an affiliate.

The Macau government had previously suggested a need to approve dividend distribution to shareholders by the citys casino operators. The proposal was included in a government document regarding the revision of the citys gaming law, published in September for public consultation. There was no reference to such proposal in Fridays press conference.

No changes to taxes

Mr Cheong additionally stated there were no plans for tax hikes regarding the gaming industry. Macau taxes the gross gaming revenue of Macau casinos at a rate of 35 percent, but other levies on casino gaming gross raise the tax rate to 39 percent in effect.

According to the summary of the bill, the Macau government has dropped a proposal to appoint delegates to Macaus gaming concessions, that would have monitored the operation of the gaming firms. Instead, the local authorities would strengthen other channels of supervision, said Mr Cheong.

A delegate system is already used in Macau to monitor other forms of public concession. But the idea of applying the system to the gaming sector had attracted a lot of comment during last years public consultation.

Macaus existing gaming law requires that at least 10 percent of the gaming concession entitys share capital has to be held by a managing director who is a Macau permanent resident. The bill now presented suggests upping that shareholding portion to 15 percent.

The government-backed bill all states that, among the main goals of casino concessionaires, are promotion of national security, as well as Macaus economic diversification, and the citys sustainable development.

Asked by a reporter, Mr Cheong did not clarify whether the reference to national security meant Chinese-backed firms would be favoured in a future tender for fresh casino concessions. He said all firms meeting the relevant criteria to be set by the government for the new tender, would be welcome to present a proposal.

Other government suggestions featured in the bill, include the need to increase the minimum share capital requirement for any local casino concessionaire to MOP5 billion (US$625 million) from the existing MOP200-million threshold.

A number of commentators had said prior to Friday, that the likelihood of a prompt announcement on the future of the industry had increased due to the release before Christmas of the summary results from the public consultation held in the autumn.

Hard Rock leads in Indiana for the third month in a row with December’s $32.4M revenue – Yogonet International

Posted: at 8:10 am

The Indiana Gaming Commision (IGC) reported Wednesday that Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana had the highest earnings in the state for the third consecutive month, once again surpassing Horseshoe Casino in Hammond for revenue after paying successful bettors.

Hard Rocks win from slot machines and table games totaled $32.4 million for the month, a 5.7% increase compared to its November win, and 9.25% more than Horseshoes December win of $29.7 million.

As reported by the IGC, Hard Rock attracted $45.9 million in table game wagers in December compared to $30.5 million at Horseshoe. Baccarat was the biggest table game at both the Gary and Hammond casinos. But Hard Rock ($26.4 million) more than doubled up Horseshoe ($11.1 million) in baccarat play, and led in baccarat win with $5.8 million for Hard Rock and $1.6 million for Horseshoe.

Hard Rock was also ahead in blackjack play in December, with $8.4 million compared to $7.7 million at Horseshoe. Blackjack wins in December were $1.8 million, compared to $1.7 million for Horseshoe.

Horseshoe was ahead of Hard Rock on slot machine play, with $226.7 million versus $224.8 million; and win, which accounted for $22.9 million versus $21.9 million in December. This is due to the fact that Horseshoe has 20% more slot machines than Hard Rock on its gaming floor.

As reported by NWI, Matt Schuffert, president of Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, said he was pleased the casino had its strongest month yet in December: "Our table games business continues to perform extremely well, led by our strong baccarat business. We added over 50 additional slot machines to our floor in December, with nearly 100 more classic games coming soon."

Eric Ramsey, an analyst for PlayIndiana.com, explained: "2021 should be remembered as the year in which people fully embraced online sports betting, especially after a tumultuous 2020. As impressive as the year was, though, the market is not done growing."

Schuffert anticipates Hard Rock will maintain its lead over Horseshoe in the new year by continuing to offer entertainment including upcoming live musical performances by The Jacksons, Papa Roach and Clink Black.

According to the IGC, Ameristar Casino in East Chicago saw slot machines and table games win of $18.9 million in December, up 6.9% compared to November, while December win of $11.7 milloin at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City was down 8.1% on a monthly basis.

Data show Indiana citizens also continued betting on sports in December, with Indiana falling short of a fourth consecutive month record for sports wagering handle. The IGC reported Indiana citizens bet $463 million on sporting events last month. That was nearly equal to the all-time monthly high of $463.7 million set in November.

Football and basketball together accounted for nearly 60% of Decembers sports wagers. Altogether, Indianas sportsbooks handled $3.8 billion in wagers last year, more than double Indianas 2020 sports wagering handle of $1.8 billion.

Ameristar Casino led the state for sports wagering handle last month, with $155.4, primarily through its DraftKings mobile sports wagering affiliate. Blue Chip ranked second with $121.1 million with FanDuel.

As for the state, records show Indiana in December collected $58 million in tax revenue from slot machine and table game play, and another $2.5 million from settled sports wagers.

State clears firm linked to Schenectady’s Rivers Casino to begin mobile sports betting The Daily Gazette – The Daily Gazette

Posted: January 7, 2022 at 5:02 am

SCHENECTADY Four recently licensed mobile sports wagering operators can begin operations in New York state as early as Saturday morning.

The state Gaming Commission announced Thursday that the four had satisfied all requirements to accept bets and have been approved to do so starting at 9 a.m. Jan. 8.

Among the four is Rush Street Interactive, which oversees the in-person sports betting operations at Rivers Casino & Resort Schenectady. RSI already operates online gaming in 11 other states.

RSI is an affiliate of Rush Street Gaming, operator of casinos under the Rivers name in Schenectady and three other cities. RSI and RSGhad the same cofounder, have the same chairman and share an address in Chicago.

The connection may not have much practical benefit for Schenectady.

RSI had to place the computer servers it will use for New York mobile sports wagering at a licensed casino within the state, and of course it chose Rivers Schenectady. But there isnt a workforce attached to the server farm, and none of the tax revenue generated by the millions of dollars churning through those serverswill be shared with local municipalities the state will keep it all.

The state also retains all of RSIs $25 million one-time licensing fee.

To borrow a gambling term, New York state has gone all in on its tax on the newest form of legal gambling within its borders.

The rate is 51% apparently tied for the highest gambling tax in the nation, and far more than most other states, including New Jersey, where the rate is 13%.

The statehas earmarked $6 million a year of the mobile sports wagering tax revenue for problem gambling treatment statewide and $5 million for sports programs statewide for underprivileged youth.

Rivers Schenectady General Manager Rick Richards has said that the advent of mobile sports betting will likely drive up interest in Rivers sportsbook, the retail sports betting operation within the waterfront casino.

That would generate some local impact: The tax on the sportsbooks revenue is shared with the city and eight counties, and a few people have been hired for the sportsbook in anticipation of the increased patronage Richards expects.

RSI has been growing rapidly since it went public in April 2020.

Full-year revenue for 2021 has not been tallied but is projected at $480 million to $500 million. This compares with $279 million in 2020 and $64 million in 2019.

RSI did not post a profit in 2019 or 2020, but its net loss for the first nine months of 2021 was $33 million, down from $90 million in the same periodof 2020.

RSI has mobile, online and retail operations in Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan, Indiana, Virginia, Colorado, Iowa, West Virginia and Arizona, but considers its newest market to be potentially its biggest.

CEO Richard Schwartz said Thursday in a news release:

The long-awaited launch of online and mobile sports betting in New York the largest online sports betting market by population in the United States is here, and just in time. With the college football championship game on Jan. 10 and NFL playoffs approaching, and the NBA and NHL seasons in full swing, in addition to countless other sports and betting options available for play, fans have endless entertainment at their fingertips at BetRivers.

Mobile sports betting was legalized by New York in 2021 in an attempt to capture some of the money New Yorkers had been wagering through operators in other states particularly New Jersey, which is a quick hop from the huge New York City market.

The Gaming Commission awarded licenses in early November to RSI and eight other operators.

RSI and three others Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings and FanDuel have satisfied requirements and are cleared to begin.

888 escapes ASA sanction over YouTube poker ads – Marketing regulation – iGaming Business

Posted: at 5:02 am

Online casino operator 888 has escaped sanction from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) regarding advertising on the Calfreezy YouTube channel.

Ads for the 888poker app appeared at the beginning of two videos in August 2021 entitled I was Youtubers [sic] Taxi driver for 24 hours and $10,000 Youtuber poker challenge.

Two complainants had raised the issue of whether ads for a gambling app were directed at those under 18 and whether they had particular appeal to children, however neither complaint was upheld.

Channel owner Callum Airey was able to sufficiently demonstrate that children made up a very small part of his audience. YouTube analytics showed that 7.5% of viewers of the first video were under 18, while the figure for the second video stood at 6%. Both figures were below the ASAs 25% threshold, and so the ads were found not to be in breach of any advertising codes.

Furthermore, 888 retained editorial control over both 90 second ads, which included warnings that the product was not suitable for those under 18 in addition to responsible gambling and 18+ logos.

Airey was also able to show that the second video which was specifically about poker had a lower under-18 audience than the first, suggesting that the content didnt appeal to that demographic.

The ASA concluded that although images of the 888poker app were used in the ads, the absence of imagery or wording linked to youth culture meant that the overall presentation lacked significant appeal to children.

Regarding the first video, the ASA concluded: While the video was humorous in tone, we concluded that the concept of pretending to be a taxi driver and having conversations, while playing the taxi driver role, with other YouTube personalities would not have particular appeal to children or young people.

The ASA had previously ruled against 888 over misleading affiliate advertising back in November.
