These Foldable Houses Cost $50k and Go Up in a Day – Singularity Hub

Posted: July 29, 2021 at 8:37 pm

3D printing has become the hottest new construction technology of the past few years, with houses being laid down in California, Texas, New York, Mexico, Canada, Italy, and Germany, to name just a few. Theres no doubt its an efficient, low-cost way to build durable homes, with the added bonus of a wow-factor (which may soon expire given how fast the method seems to be proliferating).

But one company is taking a totally different route to affordable, easy-to-build housing: foldable homes.

If, like me, your first thought was Foldable? That doesnt sound like something Id want to live in, or something anyone should live in, for that matterhear me out. The company producing the homes is called Boxabl, and theyre made of steel, concrete, and EPS foam (this stands for expanded polystyrene, and its used as insulation).

The houses were unveiled at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas, where Boxabl is based, in March. But theyve recently started to get a lot more attention after a tweet by Elon Musk raised suspicions that he lives in one. Theres since been some confusion about whether Musks Boca Chica, Texas house is actually a Boxabl or a similar pre-fabricated home from a different builder, but either way, its been good publicity for Boxabl.

The companys first model, and the only one currently available, is 400 square feetabout the size of a studio apartmentand theyre calling it the Casita. It costs $49,500 and can be set up in a day once its delivered. It comes as a 20-foot-wide load that can be shipped on an 8-foot footprint; that means it can be hauled by a pickup truck or SUV (perhaps not coincidentally, one video shows a Boxabl house being pulled by a Tesla Model X), and the shipping costs are far lower than those of traditional mobile and prefab homes.

The kitchen and bathroom are on the same side of the house, with items like the refrigerator, toilet, and sinks already built in. This section stays upright throughout the shipping process. Upon arrival, the house just needs to be unfolded. It can be bolted to any foundation using connector plates.

The actual setup of the unit itself is very fast, said Boxabl co-founder Galiano Tiramani. Weve done it here in under an hour. It really just unfolds and bolts down, and youre good to go. By here he means in the factory, where setup is likely easier than in a real-world setting, particularly because the homes electrical, plumbing, and HVAC all need to be hooked up.

Nonetheless, this can all be completed in a day, particularly at sites where the electrical and plumbing hookups are ready and waiting. Its worth noting that the listed price of $49,500 is just for the house; it doesnt include the necessary utility hookups, foundation, and permits. Boxabl estimates these costs could range from $5,000 on the low end up to $50,000, depending on location and complexity of the site. The land you put the house on is a separate cost too, and would obviously vary widely based on location.

Boxabl will soon open a new factory in Las Vegas that will be able to produce one house every 90 minutes, and Tiramani estimates an annual output of 3,600 houses.

Though theres no 3D printing involved in the manufacturing, there will be a good deal of automation. Robotic arms will lift and move the wall panels from one step of the process to the next, placing them on lazy-susan-like rotating pallets, where theyll go from lying flat to standing up to being connected together then folded up.

If youre still wondering about safety, fear not. Boxabls website says its homes are resistant to bugs, water, fire, wind, and mold. Waterproof would be a bit more reassuring than water-resistant (I mean, were not talking about a raincoat here, and even if we were, the same would apply!), but it seems this is just semantics; since theres no lumber or sheetrock used for the walls, its virtually impossible for water to warp or corrode them.

If your Boxabl floods, the water drains out, and the structure is undamaged, the website states, adding that both the interior and exterior walls are covered in non-combustible materials for fire resistance, and the houses can handle hurricane-speed winds. It certainly seems theyve covered all the bases.

The company plans to expand on its offerings with new shapes and sizes, which will likely be modular so customers can design their homes to fit their needs. Apparently over 1,000 people have already reserved a Casita, which can be done on Boxabls website either by paying full price up front, giving a deposit of $1,200 or $200, or for free (but youll be last in line, and lets be honest, they probably wont start making a house for you until youve put down some cash).

Like 3D printed homes, Boxabls innovation seems promising as a source of affordable housing, and could become a major new player in the industry. However, also like its 3D printed counterparts, one of Boxabls big limitations is that it requires an empty piece of land at ground leveland these are exactly whats scarce in dense urban centers, and often even in surrounding suburbs.

But with more people leaving cities post-pandemic and many companies implementing flexible work policies, we may not see urban populations grow as fast as expected. Either way, dont be too surprised if you see a small, sleek, folded-up house pull into your neighborhood on the back of a truck sometime in the next couple years.

Marine that has walked entire State of California, Arizona, and New Mexico now in Texas to bring awareness to Deported Veterans – WFMZ Allentown

Posted: at 8:37 pm

EL PASO, Texas, July 28, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ --The inaugural "Walk the Line" march to bring our deported veterans home initiative that started Monday, June 28, 2021, in San Diego, CA., is now going through the Southern part of Texas, with Brownsville, Texas as the final destination point for one Veteran, who's looking at making officials in Washington DC and the White House take a second look at how U.S. Veterans are being treated after they finish their line of duty.

USMC Veteran and CEO/Founder of the American Veterans Homefront Initiative, Ramon Castro, has been joined along the U.S./Mexico Border with local supporters, zoom calls with the California Latino Legislative Caucus, rallies in Calexico, CA, Douglas, AZ, Las Cruces, NM, and most recently in Downtown El Paso where Castro was accompanied by the Repatriate our Patriots organization, LULAC (League of Latino American Citizens) and Hector Barajas, a U.S. Army Deported Veteran who nearly fought 10 years to become an American Citizen.

Castro, a USMC Veteran who has gotten national attention, continues on his journey across the U.S./Mexico Border to bring the needed awareness to Washington DC to seek immediate relief for deported American Veterans who have served their country.

"This is not a Democrat or Republican issue---this is an American Issue! Our goal is to walk from San Diego (in California) all the way to Brownsville (in Texas) to bring awareness to this issue of deported veterans. And we're hoping we're pushing for three initiatives. First, we're asking President Joe Biden to halt the deportation of war veterans, now. Second, we're asking for a program to be instituted so that all active military become citizens while on active duty. And we're asking for a full pardon to bring all these veterans who have been deported home back to the U.S.," said Castro.

The reality is that today's Veterans who were legal residents but not U.S. Citizens are sadly being deported back to their respective countries. Although there was a recent order announced by the Biden Administration earlier this monththis still falls short as the U.S. government does not have a policy in place to expedite citizenship for service members or veterans. It also does not have a policy to protect veterans from complete deportation. As a result, veterans who run into legal problems face possible and, at times, immediate deportation. Many have already been deported, but no one really knows how many. In addition, veterans are being deported to their country of origin around the world.

The American Veterans Homefront Initiative's call-to-action outlines three clear goals and asks that the current Biden-Harris administration and U.S. Congress to take swift and bold actions on the following:

1)Implement, streamline the process for service members and veterans to become citizens Immediately.

2)Halt deportation of American Veterans.

3)Pardon all American Veterans who have been deported and bring them home.

The inaugural event, "Walk the Line," a March to Bring Our Deported Veterans Home, started Monday, June 28, 2021, in San Diego, CA. The walk will cross California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. It will end on August 11, 2021, near Brownsville, TX. Here are the dates for Mr. Castro's walk for justice for Deported Veterans:

A squished tarantula and being followed by a Tesla: How we got the story on SpaceX and Blue Origin – Houston Chronicle

Posted: July 25, 2021 at 3:41 pm

I'm on my laptop, transcribing interviews, when Jon Shapley slams on the brakes. He is driving us along Texas 54, the remote road that connects Van Horn to Blue Origins launch site.

I just saw a tarantula crossing the road, he says. Should we turn around to see it?

YES!

Shapley whips the car around. And then, just as we approach the tarantula, a truck squishes it.

Tarantulas and space arent related, per say, but for this series of articles we just had to have a tarantula photo.

A tarantula crosses Highway 54 on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, near Van Horn.

Shapley and I were working on three stories dubbed Battle of the Billionaires. It was going to be about two very different communities humid versus dry, beaches versus mountains with one thing in common: a billionaire had chosen their community to launch rockets.

We started in Brownsville, home to Elon Musk and SpaceX. And when I say home, I mean that literally. On Twitter, Musk said his primary home is in Boca Chica Village.

This was confirmed when we spoke to Rob and Sarah Avery, the couple who live next door to Musk when he's in town. It might also explain why a Tesla tailed us around Boca Chica Village, slowly following us from house to house as we knocked on doors.

Other Teslas were parked on the street or in the driveways.Details are important in stories like this, and Shapley noticed that the Teslas werent their usual sleek selves. The electric vehicles were covered in bugs and dirt.

He was photographing one vehicle and had been sitting in front of it, taking pictures of the bugs, when the car turned on. The people inside were giving us a signal: It was time to move along.

Our time in Brownsville was great; Shapley and I ate lots of tacos. And more importantly, we talked to lots of excited students, business owners and real estate agents optimistic about the city's potential. SpaceX could be a game changer.

But we also met homeowners who were being displaced, fishers who couldnt easily access Boca Chica Beach due to road closures and environmentalists who were concerned about the wildlife refuge and state park next door to the SpaceX launch facility.

Our goal was to show the good things created by SpaceX and the conflict. We spoke to more people than I could squeeze into the article, and I am so very grateful for the time they gave us.

Shapley and I got a week at home before it was time to visit Van Horn, where Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin is located.

Van Horn is significantly smaller. After we interviewed someone in town, we often saw them again at the post office or a restaurant we chose for lunch. We became regulars at Boots and Scoops, where we met sources and stopped in for coffee and ice cream.

Similar to Brownsville, people in this community were generous with their time and their stories. We spoke to a student who met Blue Origin employees in high school and is now studying aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. I learned that Mayor Becky Brewster shares my love of Star Wars and Star Trek. She told us about the towns promise and its problematic water system.

And oh, did I envy Larry Simpson, the former newspaper owner who had an exclusive interview with Bezos. Not many reporters get one-on-one time with Bezos.

But we still needed a tarantula photo. Because details are important.

I returned to transcribing and Shapley resumed driving. Then he saw the unbelievable. There was a second tarantula crossing the road.Shapley pulled over and got on the tarantulas level meaning he was on his belly in the middle of the highway.

I kept watch for oncoming traffic as he took pictures and video of our eight-legged friend.

Zoom: Advisor to NewSpace industry predicts great things for Brownsville and RGV – Rio Grande Guardian

Posted: at 3:41 pm

BROWNSVILLE, Texas A developer and advisor in the NewSpace industry is predicting great things for Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley.

Austin, Texas-based Joshua Littlejohn has been making frequent visits to the Valley to learn about its potential and advance his plans to bring investors to the region.

What exciting times for Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley, Littlejohn told the Rio Grande Guardian, during a zoom conversation. It has the potential to be incredibly special.

Littlejohn said Brownsville and the Valley came onto his radar when SpaceX first announced it was going to be testing and launching rockets at Boca Chica. Since then, he said, there have been major inflection points that have increased the chances of the region becoming an important part of the NewSpace industry.

What is happening right now in the Rio Grande Valley, the success of this (recent SpaceX) mission has really energized the NewSpace economy, Littlejohn said. Even though there has not been a successful departure and return of any successful mission just the energy in and of itself of coming to that region is attracting people. We have new companies, we have new interest.

Littlejohn said he has known Brownsville Deputy City Manager Helen Ramirez since her days working in Central Texas. Ramirez is also executive director of the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation. Littlejohn praised GBIC for increasing the specific integration points and acting as a conduit to bring activity to the Valley.

Without mentioning names, Littlejohn spoke about one of the companies he is advising.

I have now brought it to their attention that there are incentives that we can take advantage of, there is a relevant market for both the terrestrial application for the solution that that company has but also a path to integrate seamlessly into what is happening today and what will come tomorrow with respect to NewSpace.

Littlejohn said the Port of Brownsville stands to benefit as SpaceX develops its projects at Boca Chica.

As the spaceport develops and if and when a SpaceX starship leaves earth with a capacity it has and returns with that payload, that is another major inflection point, Littlejohn said.

So, what is interesting about the Rio Grande Valley is just its capacity to integrate and grow around that. It makes it very special. You have a port, so now, if a payload comes back it can be shipped anywhere from the port.

The potential for Brownsville and the region is huge, Littlejohn said.

In the most idealized future state, what you could potentially have what equates to a modern day Silk Road from Space coming back into the Valley and all the things that that means. Not just related to NewSpace but also related to uplifting the Valley, uplifting the economy, and all the other cool things that come with such a thing.

And if SpaceX is successful with interplanetary transportation, Littlejohn said, one can imagine the same thing: The successful transportation of people and goods from either the Gulf of Mexico or the Port of Brownsville or Boca Chica. It is just a major, major, major, inflection point.

From his visits already, Littlejohn said it is clear Brownsville is already very special. It is exciting just to be integrating with those individuals and those organizations and looking for ways to add value to the things they have already done and are aspiring to do, he said.

Littlejohn added: A big part of what is making this experience so enjoyable is the people. None of this would be possible if there was resistance or opposition. I know there are concerns. We have to be prudent, we have to be responsible about the way we do anything. We have to make sure we are considering all stakeholders. I think that there is a fair amount of that taking place.

My intention is to do the best that I can to bring interest and capital into the region. To work with existing organizations and companies to actually execute. That makes me enthusiastic because with a high degree of confidence I can go to people and say, look, this is the place to get this done. Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley is a special place and a place I am very much looking forward to realizing some of these initiatives.

Quality journalism takes time, effort and. Money!

Producing quality journalism is not cheap. The coronavirus has resulted in falling revenues across the newsrooms of the United States. Science News Roundup: U.S. warns SpaceX its new Texas launch site tower not yet approved; Teenager to fly with Bezos in inaugural space tourism flight…

Posted: at 4:08 am

Following is a summary of current science news briefs.

Chinese spacecraft returns to Earth after inaugural flight

A Chinese spacecraft capable of flying to the edge of the atmosphere took off and returned to Earth on the same day in what China said was a big step towards developing reusable space transportation technology. The spacecraft lifted off from a launch centre in northwest China on Friday and completed its flight according to "set procedures", said China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp (CASC), the country's main space contractor.

U.S. warns SpaceX its new Texas launch site tower not yet approved

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned Elon Musk's space company SpaceX that its environmental review of a new tower at its Boca Chica launch site in Texas is incomplete and the agency could order SpaceX to take down the tower. An FAA spokesman said on Wednesday that the agency's environmental review underway of SpaceX's proposed rocket assembly "integration tower" is "underway," and added that "the company is building the tower at its own risk."

Teenager to fly with Bezos in inaugural space tourism flight

An 18-year-old physics student whose father heads an investment management firm is set to take the place of a person who put up $28 million in an auction to take part in the inaugural space tourism flight for billionaire Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin company. Blue Origin said on Thursday Oliver Daemen will join the four-member all-civilian crew for Tuesday's scheduled flight after the auction winner, whose name had not been made public, dropped out due to unspecified "scheduling conflicts." Daemen becomes the company's first paying customer.

(With inputs from agencies.)

Get your adrenaline pumping with these South Padre Island adventures – CultureMap Houston

Posted: at 4:08 am

Its not all lounging on the beach on South Padre Island. Sure, you can rent a lounger or four and work on your zen moments, but you can also be active and adventurous.

There's a massive list of ideas on South Padre Islands website, but here are five awesome things to do when you are looking for fun:

Hit the wavesSouth Padre Island is one of the best places to learn how to surf. The waves and the beach are generally forgiving for beginners who are just learning their goofy foot from their natural foot. But did you know that South Padre Islands has the best surf in Texas? Its got the biggest, most powerful, most consistent, and best-shaped waves anywhere on the Texas Gulf Coast.

Also interesting: The island has more surf than Hawaii, because the waves are made up of very short interval swells. And that means more chances to learn how to hop on that board and ride that wave.

The most popular breaks (aka places to catch a wave that's surfing lingo) are at Isla Blanca Beach Park, Dolphin Cove, Boca Chica, and both the North and South Jetties. You can find surf instructors available to take you from paddling to standing in no time.

Catch some airKite boarding is a great way to mix your water time with some air time. Thanks to Air Padre Kiteboarding, riding the wind and waves is a thrilling experience that does away with the need for a big boat and gas. Here, the power is all in your hands.

South Padre Island is listed as one of the top 10 places to learn this sport and people fly in from around the country to take advantage of the excellent instructors and incredible conditions. Thanks to the flatwater of the Laguna Madre and the waves of the Gulf, kite boarders have their choice of experiences to learn or perfect their abilities.

Need for speedSometimes you dont want to rely on the wind or the waves sometimes you want some good old-fashioned fuel to get you where youre going. Thats when you need to rent a Wave Runner or Jet Ski. There are multiple outfitters that provide rentals and even tours. Anyone born after 1993 will need a boater's safety card to rent, so be sure to plan ahead and pick one up.

Swing and bounceIf its time to get out of the water, then youll want to head over to Gravity Park. There you can pick from the tallest reverse bungee in the world (the Rocket) or the giant swing (the Skycoaster). Either one will provide an amazing view of the island. If youre ready to slow things down, take a ride on the 60-foot Ferris wheel.

Make your planThe best way to satisfy your inner adventurer is with a quick visit to SoPadre.com, where youll find great lodging deals, places to rent all your gear, and be able to sign up for lessons.

SpaceX Is Launching a Rocket the Size of the Statue of Liberty – Observer

Posted: July 10, 2021 at 3:24 am

SpaceX is aiming to launchits next big test this month with Starship, the spacecraft designed to fly humans to Mars. The company successfully launched a Starship upper stage prototype (SN15) to 10 km (6.2 miles) in the sky and landed it in one piece in May. The next flight will be launching the next-generation upper stage (SN20) on top of a giant booster called Super Heavy to the orbital altitude of at least 160 km (100 miles).

The booster-spacecraft combo will be of unheard-of scale. On July 1, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted two photos of the Super Heavy standing at the Starbase test site in Boca Chica, Texas. The booster alone is 230 feet (70 meters) tall, roughly the size of the Statue of Liberty. With the 150-feet-tall upper stage attached, the whole stack will stand nearly 400 feet (120 meters) tall, making it the largest rocket ever built to go to space.

Will look pretty wild with a ship on top, Musk tweeted about the booster.

The final piece of the Super Heavy launch tower arrived at Starbase on Monday, local observer BocaChicaGal tweeted.

Lifting this behemoth off the ground will require tremendous thrusting power. Musk tweeted on Sunday that SpaceX plans to install 32 or 33 Raptor engines at the bottom of Super Heavy to provide up to 230 tons of thrusting power. The previous Starship prototypes used for high-altitude tests only had three Raptor engines.

SpaceX eventually wants to make both the booster and the upper stage fully reusable. But initial tests will focus on reaching orbital altitude.

According to SpaceXs flight plan submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration, the Super Heavy-SN20 combo would lift off from Starbase and soar toward Earths orbit in one piece. After that, the booster would turn around for descent and land in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast from Boca Chica, while the upper stage would go into orbit for a little while before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii.

SpaceX is getting close to launching Starship SN20 on its massive Super Heavy booster this month – Poc Network

Posted: July 7, 2021 at 2:38 pm

Boca Chica, TX is going to get a little noisy this month when SpaceX launches the next big test of the Starship spacecraft. Only this time, it really is a big test thanks to the massive Super Heavy booster strapped below it. This time, it will be the SN20 prototype that will be making its way up.

The previous SN15 prototype saw an altitude of just over 6 miles before it dropped into it a belly flop and made a successful landing. This allowed SpaceX to push ahead to the SN20 and bring testing to the next phase (orbital flight). If this months launch gets all of the green flags necessary to leave the ground, it will take Starship (SN20) to around 100 miles above the Earth, where it will then cruise and drop-down somewhere near Hawaii. The Super Heavy booster is set to land in the water near Boca Chica.

The total height with the booster and SN20 stacked on top will be around 394 feet tall. Making it the tallest and most powerful rocket that has ever been launched. Creating a new record by beating out the Saturn V, which stood 363 feet. It will contain up to 33 Raptor engines, which will be required to get it off the ground.

So yeah, Texas is going to feel this one. Heres hoping it happens without a hitch, as there is nothing like breaking records of this magnitude.

A humble billionaire? Elon Musk has all he needs in tiny home next to SpaceX – Austonia

Posted: July 2, 2021 at 8:34 pm

While he's been playing at an All-Star level on the pitch this season, he's also contributed in bigger ways off of it.

Stuver and his wife, Ashley, actively advocate for the Black Lives Matter and Pride movements.

Most recently, Stuver raised $221 for Playing for Pride, a fundraiser which tallies saves, shutouts and more stats from participating players and donates money to LGBTQ+ causes. He also helped get the word out to supporters' groups like Los Verdes, who raised over $3,000 to the cause.

Stuver has friends and family that are part of the LGBTQ+ community, and he's seen the disparities between how they are treated in society.

" I can see that they don't get the same respect and the same opportunities as cis, straight individuals, and I want to be able to use my platform to bring attention to that," Stuver said. "Hopefully one day sport is the most inclusive area of our lives."

This isn't the first cause he's been supporting. For years, Stuver and his wife have also helped raise money for Austinites to do their laundry with The Laundry Project. When Austin FC fan Brad Tillery began requesting the release of the Verde keeper kit, Stuver agreed that he would get a kit of his own if he donated to the project, which raises money for residents to go to laundromats in the area.

The #ReleaseTheKit hashtag went viral in the Austin FC Twitterverse, and over $1,600 was raised for the cause in just 24 hours following its release.

"Austin has just kind of taken on a life of its own," Stuver said. "It's just been amazing to see how receptive our fans have been to me and Ashley's causes that we support and just truly the amount of money that we've raised for so many different causes."

Stuver has also posted videos encouraging children who are dealing with serious illness, including 6-year-old Luke Brooks. For Stuver, it's a no-brainer to take a bit of time out of the day and post a video showing support.

"They're going through such a tough time in their lives that any little bit of support, and any little bit of caring from other people goes a long way," Stuver said. "No matter what, everyone is stronger together."

Stuver credits his parents, Roy and Leeann Stuver, for fostering a sense of community and caring in him from a young age.

"My family was always involved in a tight-knit community, and we always thought of ways to help people out," Stuver said. "My parents were kind of my role models in the way that they were selfless and put other people ahead of themselves. I wanted to emulate that as I got older."

He's not the only Austin FC player to be engaged in community outreach. In February, a GoFundMe by center back Matt Besler started the Austin FC Players 2021 Winter Storm Relief Fund, which helped raise over $45,000 for the city of Austin as its residents lacked resources during the brutal storm. The club teamed up with local restaurants as well and helped bring safe drinking water and free, warm meals to thousands.
