Wolves’ Karl-Anthony Towns trying to regain his three-point touch – Minneapolis Star Tribune
Posted: March 21, 2021 at 4:39 pm
PHOENIX For the past two seasons, Karl-Anthony Towns has been a 40% three-point shooter or better. Not only was Towns one of the best-shooting big men from deep in the NBA last season, he was one of the most efficient shooters regardless of position in shooting 41% on 7.9 attempts per game.
But Towns is trying to regain a touch that has eluded him of late.
He finished with 29 points Tuesday in a 137-121 Timberwolves loss at the Los Angeles Lakers, but he shot just 2-for-8 from three-point range. An off night, but more frustrating for Towns when you consider he is shooting 10-for-38, only 26%, over his past six games. For the season, Towns is 36%.
When asked if he had any explanation for it Towns said. "Actually, I don't."
"I'm going to have to go back. Last six, seven, I don't know, but it ain't been good," Towns said. "It's not like I haven't been shooting them. But shooters shoot. Got to keep shooting them and keep putting pressure on the defense even with me not making them. It just puts pressure on the defense and gives everyone else a chance to have open lanes."
Towns said he recalled a time two seasons ago when he was also in a slump and former coach Ryan Saunders passed along advice that Towns recited Tuesday.
"Ryan said, 'Don't worry, averages always find themselves and work themselves out. You'll be fine,' " Towns said.
Towns said he also sought advice from his friend, Phoenix guard Devin Booker. Perhaps Booker can lend him more advice, considering the Wolves play Phoenix on Thursday and Friday.
Towns is shooting 32% on catch-and-shoot threes. Compare that with last season, when he shot 43% on those type of shots. On pullup threes, Towns is 40% (38% last season).
Towns' current coach, Chris Finch, has said he has a hands-off approach when it comes to trying to guide shooters through slumps.
"We don't really say a whole lot unless it's a form issue or a rhythm issue and I've got to get the work in to fix it," Finch said. "But realistically, keep putting them up. Every miss is closer to your next run of makes. It's like playing blackjack cards will turn eventually."
When asked if he had experience with that at the blackjack table, Finch said with a smile: "I'm not a gambler, but I like to study the numbers. You just got to have the money to stay at the table long enough. That's the key."
If playing time equals the table in this analogy, Towns isn't about to go anywhere.
Finch said he did notice some hesitation on Towns' part of late.
"Only thing I'd like to see is he just needs to commit to it a little more," Finch said. "There's a lot of pump fake, hesitation on the shot. I just want to see him let it fly when he's going to take it."
Towns' hesitation isn't because of a lack of confidence in his shot, Finch said, but rather indecision on whether he wants to shoot or put the ball on the floor, and Towns has seen an uptick in free-throw attempts as a result of his driving, but Finch said he should be getting even more calls.
"He's getting hit a lot on his finishes around the rim, and he's not necessarily being rewarded for it," Finch said. "I love his aggressiveness. He's been elite in the post, both scoring and playmaking. Doing a lot of really good things, and it's tough to have everything going in your game at the right time. I'm sure his shot will come back around."

The Navy is getting closer to relying on pilotless planes to keep its fighters flying – Business Insider
Posted: at 4:39 pm
In December, the MQ-25 Stingray successfully made its first flight with an aerial refueling store, carrying a Cobham ARS under its left wing for about 2.5 hours.
The flight was intended to test the drone's aerodynamics with the same system used by the Navy's F/A-18s for aerial-refueling missions.
Capt. Chad Reed, the Navy's Unmanned Carrier Aviation program manager, said the test was "one big step closer in our evaluation of how the MQ-25 will fulfill its primary mission in the fleet aerial refueling."
The MQ-25 milestone was followed in February by a test in which an unmanned resupply drone delivered spare parts to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.
The Navy has struggled with its unmanned platforms, but recent developments show it is getting serious about unmanned aerial systems and reflect the major role those system could have in the future fleet.
The Stingray is not the Navy's first drone. Smaller models like the ScanEagle, RQ-21 Blackjack, and MQ-8 Fire Scout have seen service on various Navy vessels, while versions of the MQ-4C Triton, which is similar to the Stingray in size, have been flown by the Navy from land for at least three years.
But none of those drones have operated on carriers. The Navy began searching for a carrier-based drone in 2006 with the Unmanned Carrier-Launched Airborne Surveillance and Strike program.
The program originally called for a drone with strike and reconnaissance capabilities, but the increased range of anti-ship defenses and an expected shortage of pilots in the future led the Navy to shift the program's focus to aerial refueling.
The idea was sound: An unmanned aerial-refueling system would free up pilots and other carrier aircraft for combat duties and extend the range of a carrier's air wing by almost 50%.
By 2013, Northrop Grumman's X-47B demonstrator had successfully taken off from and landed on USS George H.W. Bush. Despite being the frontrunner, Northrup Grumman withdrew the X-47B from consideration in 2017 due to concerns that it could not be repurposed in a cost-effective manner.
Of the three designs remaining, the Navy selected Boeing's on April 30, 2018. A year later, the Stingray made its first flight.
December's test was the first time the Stingray carried the aerial-refueling technology that is central to its mission. Future tests will involve extending and retracting the ARS hose, as well as flights with F/A-18s. Deck-handling tests aboard carriers are also being planned.
"What we're focusing on is launching, landings, moving it around on the deck, bringing it up, taking it down in the hangar bay how do we position those assets and how can we support the air wing?" Adm. James Kilby, deputy chief of naval operations for war-fighting requirements and capabilities, said of the MQ-25 at a House Armed Services subcommittee hearing on Thursday.
The Stingray will be able to carry 15,000 pounds of fuel about 500 nautical miles. It will operate alongside and refuel EA-18G Growler electronic-warfare aircraft as well as F/A-18 and F-35C fighters.
The MQ-25 is expected to reach initial operating capability by 2024. While the Navy has ordered seven for testing, it intends to have as many as 72 in service. The Navy also plans to recruit 450 new warrant officers over the next six to 10 years to operate MQ-25s.
With the December tests, the MQ-25 has logged more than 30 hours of training flights.
The Navy's plans for unmanned systems do not end at aerial refueling.
On February 21, a Blue Water Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) delivered "light-weight logistical equipment" to the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.
The drone, built by Texas-based aerospace company Skyways, is capable of traveling 500 miles and carrying 30-pound loads.
Despite the small cargo, Capt. John Bush, director of aircraft material and engineering for Naval Air Forces Atlantic, called the test "a first step in revolutionizing logistics support to maximize operational availability and lethality for these critical capital assets."
The Navy has said that up to 90% of the logistical issues that move ships into non-mission-capable or partially mission-capable status can be fixed with components weighing less than 50 pounds.
SH-60 Seahawk helicopters or V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft currently make such deliveries, but unmanned aircraft are seen as a cost-effective alternative.
Of course, the Navy's drones are not just for logistics. Most serve an important role by carrying out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions, and some, like the MQ-8B, can actually be armed with missiles.
"There is some payload capacity in [the MQ-25] that we think has great promise for us, so I think initially we would transition to ISR" before moving to more complex electronic-attack or strike missions, Kilby said Thursday.
"We think we could get upward of 40% of the aircraft in an air wing that are unmanned and then transition beyond that," Kilby said.
Navy submarines are also working on using drones to aid targeting. Since subs avoid launching torpedoes at periscope depth to minimize the risk of being spotted, drones could ensure long-range torpedo attacks hit their mark.
The service reached initial operational capability with a sub-launched unmanned aerial system in September, Rear Adm. Dave Goggins, the Navy's program executive officer for submarines, said during a Naval Submarine League webinar in November, calling it "a pretty awesome capability to provide to the fleet."
Completely unmanned ships and underwater vehicles tasked with logistics, anti-submarine warfare, and mine-clearing missions are also in development. The Navy plans to have 143 unmanned vessels in service by 2045.
The Marine Corps' Force Design 2030 report also calls for a 50% increase in unmanned-aerial-vehicle squadrons. The Corps hopes to acquire "a family of systems" of different sizes and capabilities to meet its drone requirements.
With development underway on unmanned combat aircraft like the Kratos XQ-58 Valkyrie and the Boeing Airpower Teaming System, some argue the Navy's next carrier-based fighter should be unmanned as well.
The idea may not be so far-fetched; last summer, an artificial-intelligence program developed by Heron Systems defeated a US Air Force F-16 pilot in five simulated dogfights. Heron Systems claimed the program went through 4 billion simulations before the event, though former fighter pilots told Insider the program still wasn't comparable to a human pilot.
"These sustained investments will yield new capabilities extending well beyond the effectiveness of standalone platforms or human-centered systems," Thomas Harker, acting Secretary of the Navy, said in the service's recently released Unmanned Campaign Framework. "They will transform naval warfare by providing asymmetric advantages to each and every sailor and Marine."

He also presented Maj. Davin with an NTWL challenge coin. Brian Markowich, NTWL executive director, presented Maj. Davin with the Test NFO of the Year plaque.
As you know, this year was a challenging environment thats been completely new to us, and it was difficult for us to keep our focus on our mission, Col. Marigliano said. The remarkable work that you did in focusing on innovative ways to resolve data issues and improve data quality really broke you out of the pack.
Thank you very much for all that youve done as RQ-21 Blackjack project officer, Mr. Markowich said. As the Director of Flight Test Engineering, I firmly believe the relationship between our project officers and our project engineering corps is what makes the entire test wing, the test squadrons, and the test teams successful.
Congratulations, JV, Cmdr. Martin said, referring to Maj. Davin by his call sign. Its always awesome when a Ghost Wolf gets recognized for their efforts and hard work.
Maj. Davin attended the virtual ceremony from Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico, where he is currently on temporary additional duty. Because he could not receive his awards or his gift in person, his Marine Corps colleagues at Holloman ceremonially presented him with a childrens watch as a substitute, which the ceremonys participants greatly enjoyed.
Id like to thank the command for nominating me for this award. Im extremely humbled, Maj. Davin said. Ill take your words to heart and well continue to get the job done at UX-24. I look forward to it.

The Science of Winning: How to Find a Casino Strategy That Works – Wales247
Posted: at 4:39 pm
The majority of players know that when you visit a casino, the house has an advantage over us. Whenever you play a game at an online or offline casino, you are more often than not adding wealth to the casinos coffers. However, you increase your chances of winning when you have a good casino strategy.
Guest author Fabio Duarte looks at the science of winning and how you can improve your chances of beating the house. To find out more about Fabio Duarte, click here.
If you do a simple Google search, you will come across tons of material on casino strategy. There is no dearth to the number of videos, articles, eBooks, and others that claim to show you the best way to win at the casino.
Is there really a casino strategy that leads to casino winning? Over the years, seasoned gamblers have discovered the subtle relationship between casino gaming and mathematics. They have devised several strategies that may improve your chances of winning. So before you decide to give up casino gaming, let us help you to create a casino strategy that may work.
Having been in and out of casinos, we know that this is easier said than done, but not impossible. If you seriously want to beat the house and go back with a profit, you must make it a point never to bet more than 2% of your bankroll. If you stick to this simple casino strategy, you wont find yourself taking frequent walks to the ATM to draw more cash.
However, this strategy makes sense only if you have a large bankroll. If you are a casual player who has walked in with a small amount of cash and doesnt intend to spend more than that, you should do fine. But seasoned players with large bankrolls will get the most of their gaming experience if they stick to this simple rule.
All UK licensed online casinos have a strong responsible gambling policy and allow you to set limits on your betting to spend and time at the casino. UK players should take advantage of these tools and use it to their advantage to help them win and keep their winnings. Many gamblers check casino reviews to find new offers and bonuses. For that, the British players use only trusted websites like https://slotsjudge.com/.
You need to be a really good poker or blackjack player to use value betting to your advantage. Value betting is done to get the maximum benefit out of a situation that may be advantageous to you.
For example, a value betting poker player may feel that he/she has a good hand and places a bet that gives him/her the maximum benefit. Here, the bet should be big enough to be of some value but not too small, else the opponent may fold.
In the case of blackjack, card counters watch the deck carefully till the gaming situation is in their favour. They then take advantage of the situation and place large bets.
Casinos use a variety of methods that play on your psychology and force you to spend more than you intended to. Dont fall for these casino tricks.
If you are visiting a land-based casino, carry cold hard cash and leave the credit card at home. If you are playing at an online casino, use prepaid cards, electronic wallets, or prepaid vouchers to fund your account.
Online casinos also give you the option of setting daily, monthly, or weekly depositing limits, gaming session limits, and win/loss limits to help you control your casino spending. Sign up at online casinos that provide periodic reality checks, letting you know now and then how long you have been playing and how much you have lost. Doing all these helps you to stick to your casino budget and gamble responsibly.
All casino games only favour the house, but the percentage varies. If you really want to make a profit, learn the casino strategy of picking the right games. Understand the math behind the games.
There are casino games that give you a better chance of winning. For example, blackjack games have a house advantage of only 1% but slots have a house advantage of 10%. So if you want to make serious money at a casino, hit the blackjack tables and avoid the one-armed bandits.
To conclude, the best way to win at the casino is to choose games that you are comfortable playing and know when to end your gambling session. When you have won a specific amount, collect your winnings and walk away.

Locals are ready as pollenpocalypse blows in – Sandhill Sentinel
Posted: at 4:39 pm
The wet winter fed trees for a mean pollen count this spring, and it will appear as a yellow to green haze, jokingly called the pollenpocalypse, by early April. The pollenpocalypse is a release of pollen from pine trees, but its pollen is too large to trigger allergies.
Pollen, the kind the naked eye cannot see, is what triggers allergies, and the North Carolina Division of Air Quality (DAQ) reported a moderate 6.1 count of grass pollen, a low weed pollen count and a high tree pollen count at 96.5. The current shedding trees are cedars, alder, elm, poplar, pine, and willow.
In North Carolina, allergy season ranges from late February through mid-November, according to DAQ. Check the daily pollen count.
Is it allergies or the novel coronavirus? One way to know if symptoms are from allergies, according to allergists at Novant Health, is to check two things. If symptoms include itchy-watery eyes without fever, it is from allergies.
There are several types of flu, and the novel coronavirus is also blowing around. So, if allergic symptoms appear suddenly and hits hard with a fever, consult a health provider.
As soon as pollen comes out, I start sneezing and eyes water, and I have to tell people I have allergies because they think you have the corona, Lillian Jolly, at Crossroads Coffee Company in Vass, said.
Lillian Jolly talks about her allergies on March 5 at Crossroads Coffee in Vass.
The pollenpocalypse arrives with warmer weather when people want to raise their windows and enjoy their screened-in porches and patios. The yellow pollen sticks to everything and must be washed off.
I washed my truck Sunday, John Perhealth, owner of Edwards Hardware in Vass, said. Monday, I was going to wax it, but it already had pollen on it. Cant sleep with the windows open, and if it gets inside the truck, you never get it all out. Lots of Blackjack trees, they hold ticks and pollen.
Blackjack oaks are a variety of oak with contorted branches which locals call the scrub oak and like other hardwoods, it sheds from late March through mid-April.
March through April, oak, ash and birch trees shed pollen.
Maples shed through May, and sycamores shed through June.
Grasses shed March through November and peak in April and June, much like weeds.
A study by the National Institute of Health showed that filtration masks helped reduce allergy symptoms, except to the eyes because they are not protected.
Eye goggles are available online and in shops where swimwear is offered.
According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, there is a solution to avoiding pollen. Buy a plane ticket to Denver, Colorado, the top state for least pollen, or fill the pollen gear checklist water hose, mask, and eye goggles.

So while Chippewa National Forest is around Cedar Lakes Casino, one of the more popular areas in the forest is a hike. Literally. If you have time, be sure to head on over.
Youll find the Sanford Center in nearby Bemidji, Minnesota. Its a fantastic place if youre looking for entertainment for the evening that offers something other than the casino games you will find at Cedar Lakes Casino or Northern Lights Casino.

The Sanford Center also hosts Bemidji States womens hockey program, too. Also a distinguished program, they have sent more than a few women to the professional ranks and even to the World Championships, along with the Olympics.
The womens program also competed against Wisconsin in the Championship Round during the 2014-15 season.
So if youre looking for some sporty entertainment, youll find it at Sanford Arena, which boasts two solid college hockey programs.
If youre having fun gambling but are looking for a few more thrills, head over to Minute 59 Mystery and Escape Rooms and you will find those thrills.
Youre getting a few solid options here, with each boasting their own goals and themes. If youve done an escape room before, you know what to do.
If you havent taken part in one before, its a simple concept: You will collect a few clues found within the room or rooms to solve the riddles and achieve our goal. Sounds like a good time, right?
So pick one of the three themes and kick off your date night or night with friends in an epic and thrilling fashion. Sure, the nonstop gaming at the casino is always a blast. But you havent seen a thrill ride quite like what you will experience at Minute 59 Mystery and Escape Rooms.
Youve heard of the tall tale of Paul Bunyan and his ox, right?
Fantastic. So head on over to what might just be Minnesotas most distinguished monument featuring the legendary lumberjack that recently earned a Travelers Choice 2020 Award on TripAdvisor.
Its a fantastic place to receive a cool photo op with the legend, himself. And best yet, along with a selfie with the gentle giant, youre also within striking distance of a couple more attractions in the attraction; Lake Bemidji and its ensuing park.
They also have a Tourist Information Center at the site, so you can even pick up a few flyers and see what all the Cass Lake and Bemidji areas offer. Plus, they have a stellar playground right at the site so your kids will have a blast with the plethora of equipment here.
Its also a cool site for nature watching, birdwatching, and picnicking. The park is also within walking distance from downtown. So you can park your car and take a stroll over, enjoying the peaceful town of Bemidji and immersing yourself fully in the areas majestic scenery.
If youre looking for a hot spot to commemorate your trip to the Cass Lake slash Bemidji region, look no further than McKenzie Place. Youre looking at what their overview on TripAdvisor claims is the most unusual, fun, and entertaining store in Minnesota.
A ringing endorsement, yeah?
The store comprises 11,000 square feet of hot items that are must-haves if youre looking for a unique way to commemorate your trip to the region. They have a plethora of different departments here in the store that will fit all ages and interest levels.
Just a few of their illustrious departments include food, home decor, candles, greeting cards, books, clothing, garden, kitchen, souvenirs, north woods, gifts, rugs, and even a toy room. Okay, so there may be more than a few things here that will pique your interest.

Blackjack Busting the most common myths – FULLSYNC
Posted: February 22, 2021 at 2:20 pm
Blackjack is a very popular card game. It gathers a lot of people around its tables in real casinos, ready to spend a lot of time playing. It requires concentration, memorization and self-control amidst a whirlwind of intense emotions. In general, its one of the most interesting games in casinos. But there are many myths about it, which often prevent the game from being a joy to play.
People often think that you can only win at blackjack games by counting cards. But you can also win the game just by chance, which is how the game was originally designed to be played. We doubt whoever created blackjack had it in their mind for anyone to build strategies to beat the system. Nevertheless, card counting is the main strategy used, but its far from the only winning strategy that works. Its just that the others are much less well known and somewhat less effective.
Another myth around counting cards is you have to be an expert mathematician. But thats not the case at all. The counting procedure is simple and primitive; anyone can learn to do it. Some people practice by counting all the cards as they come out of the shuffle, or even the trees on the road on their way to work. The result is simply an automatic counting skill that immediately tells the player when to raise the bets to win.
You cant win at blackjack if youre playing on an emulator in an online casino such as casinonic.com. However, that myth is only semi-true. The emulator is completely the same thing, the only difference is that cards are mixed by the software program and not the croupier. Although they are mixed every game on emulators, whereas with live dealers they use multiple decks and normally reshuffle them all after about 75% of the deck has been used. This means youre not able to really count cards using an emulator.
But many casinos now use automatic shufflers so many operate in the same way now, and so there are nor real noticeable differences in the online version of the blackjack game. But as we say, you also may try online blackjack with live dealers, where if you think itll help you win, you will be able to read the croupier, guessing what cards hes holding, and therefore increase your chances of winning more often just like in conventional casinos.
Blackjack takes a long time to learn. Also, not entirely true, because the operators for the casino are not taught before starting work on their own for three years, but a week at most and they need to learn ALL the games that are in the casino in order to beat the players. Although they normally have more strict rules to follow than the rest of the players at the table, like not being able to stick on anything below 17.
You might hear people say you can win a million in an evening at blackjack. Thats false. At poker, yes, probably because there tends to be bigger prize pools in tournaments with sponsorships and all sorts. But not blackjack. The game mechanics of the blackjack are slower and youre normally restricted to a maximum bet value, so unless youre in a high-flying casino for millionaires in Monte Carlo or somewhere similar, youre not going to become a millionaire over night. Still, you can win a fair amount if lady luck is on your side.
Blackjack is more addictive than any other gambling game. Not at all. It is a more intellectual game that takes a matter of skill to play successfully. It allows the player to make more rational decisions because you can judge what is on the table at the time, the likeliness of what you need and the chances of getting it. Its therefore less addictive than roulette for example, because what tends to get people addicted is the risk of chance, and what bigger chance have you got than guessing where a metal ball lands on a wheel, hence why the odds are much higher on roulette.
So there you have it, just a few myths busted about the popular card game of blackjack. Are there any tips or tricks you use yourself to help ensure you come out on top against the casinos? Then let us know in the comments below, although, maybe giving away your secrets wouldnt be best. Just email me instead, Ill keep it secret for you.
