WASHINGTON The Space Development Agency has launched a handful of demonstration satellites into orbit, which will be used to test critical technologies for a new military-owned proliferated constellation.

The satellites hitched a ride on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as part of the Transporter-2 rideshare mission that took place June 29. That mission carried 85 satellites into orbit.

SDA was created in 2019 to build the National Defense Space Architecture. Unlike most of the militarys satellite constellations, which are generally made up of a small number of exquisite satellites in geostationary orbit, the NDSA will be made up of a large number of small satellites operating far closer to Earths surface, mostly in low Earth orbit.

SDA plans to grow the constellations in two-year tranches, starting with about 30 satellites to begin launching in 2022 and growing to hundreds of satellites by the end of the decade.

The new multilayered architecture will fill a number of missions for the military, from tracking hypersonic weapons to beyond-line-of-sight targeting. The key feature to the constellation will be an on-orbit mesh network, which SDA Director Derek Tournear has called the space networking component to the Pentagons Joint All-Domain Command and Control concept.

The agency plans to launch the first satellites in its constellation next year. But before that happens, it plans to test some of the key technologies in a series of on-orbit experiments that went up on Transporter-2: Mandrake 2, the Laser Interconnect and Networking Communications System (LINCS), and the Prototype On-orbit Experimental Testbed (POET).

The first two experiments each consist of a pair of satellites, and each experiment will independently demonstrate optical intersatellite links, or OISL. Those links will form the core of SDAs orbital mesh network, connecting the agencys transport layer satellites and allowing them to rapidly pass data back-and-forth all over the world.

Mandrake 2 is a joint effort between SDA, the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. This experiment began as an offshoot of Project Blackjack DARPAs own effort to put a small proliferated constellation in LEO to form a mesh network and test its utility for the war fighter.

A senior SDA official said Mandrake 2 will take optical communication terminals under development by SA Photonics for Blackjack and put them on orbit earlier, allowing SDA to test them. The government will test the system with the two satellites spread over a distance of up to 1,500 miles, said the official.

Were going to try to send data essentially from D.C. to Denver at the speed of light, the official said. And thats what were going to bring to the war fighter over the next several years.

Originally set to launch in January with SpaceXs Transporter-1 mission, Mandrake 2 was delayed after a mishap during payload processing damaged the satellites. They were subsequently refurbished and added to the Transporter-2 mission.

LINCS will demonstrate similar capabilities to Mandrake 2, although it will test an optical communication terminal developed by General Atomics. However, SDA doesnt see the mission as redundant. Rather, the agency believes it is necessary to have multiple companies providing OISL technologies to avoid vendor lock. LINCS will conduct experiments to connect the satellites to a NASA ground station as well as one of General Atomics MQ-9 drones.

POET is focused on battle management and custody. Initially developed by DARPA as a risk mitigator for Blackjack, the program was adopted by SDA to reduce risk on the NDSA.

POET will take an offshoot of DARPAs Pitboss an autonomous mission management system onto Loft Orbitals YAM-3 satellite, which is hosting a number of other commercial payloads. SDA will be able to load data and algorithms into the system on orbit to test data fusion capabilities essential for the agencys custody layer.

As we look to lower the latency of moving data from point A to point B on the globe, we have to move more and more of the processing into orbit to accomplish that. If all were doing is collecting data on orbit, bringing it to the ground, processing it, taking it back to orbit and moving it, were actually adding in time that doesnt need to be there. So the more processing that we can move into space, the better off were going to be, the SDA official said.

The internet gaming world is abuzz with rumors that Hideo Kojima, the enigmatic creator of Metal Gear Solid, is working on a Silent Hill game.

The clues include an announced Silent Hill game that Kojima really was working on with Guillermo del Toro back in 2014, as well a teaser for a horror game called Abandonded from obscure developer Blue Box Games. The theory is that Blue Box is fake company and Abandoned is actually a Kojima-helmed Silent Hill game. When gamers started speculating, Blue Box fed the flames, posting Guess the name: Abandoned = (First letter S, Last letter L). Reveal closing in... #PS5 #Exclusive. And then deleting the tweet.

Like most internet conspiracy theories, this one probably isnt trueBlue Box has walked back the tweet and denied being a Kojima-front-company, and the rest of the evidence is shaky at bestbut still, its one of those stories that should be true, and maybe if we all wish hard enough maybe we can make it true. TikTok user @lightskinyogi can drive an invisible car and the weirdly hairless online swami has posted video after video of the trick, gaining millions of views and leaving minds blown in his wake.

Suspecting trickery as opposed to supernatural yogic power, commenters have challenged the dude with requests like, do it with a back view and put a light above you so I can see the if there are any shadows and do it with a someone standing behind you.

So far this mysterious fellow has risen to every challenge, so I can only conclude that he, and other TikTok users of the hashtag #Pzoom, actually possess supernatural abilities beyond the ken of science, and theyre using their power over physics, matter, and energy make viral internet videos.

Tyler Cox didnt notice the gloves until after the officer punched him.

Cox, a nurse in the intensive care unit at Oregon Health & Science University, was volunteering as a medic during a protest last August in the Pearl District, where he says a Portland police officer named Thomas Clark tackled him, forcibly removed his helmet and punched him in the face.

As WW reported last week, the Multnomah County District Attorneys Office is reviewing the case against Clark for possible criminal prosecution, according to Coxs attorney Joe Piucci. (The DAs office has declined to comment.)

The incident was caught on video, gaining widespread attention on social media and in the local news late in the summer. But Cox recalls a detail from after the skirmish that stood out to him: Clarks gloves.

Cox says Clark escorted him to a police van, where he informed Cox that he would be booked for assaulting an officer. (The DAs office has since filed a no complaint in the case against Cox, meaning he wont be charged.) Cox says he was floored the officer had accused him of being the assailant in the confrontation.

I just looked at him and was like, Excuse me? Cox now tells WW. When I was standing there, that was when I really got to take a look at the officer and the gloves he was wearing.

Cox and his attorney allege that the officer was wearing punching gloves, also known as tactical gloves, in which the knuckles are reinforced with metal or hard plastic to deliver a more powerful blow.

A bureau spokesman knew of no policy regarding whether officers were allowed to wear tactical gloves, also known as sap gloves and blackjack gloves. I am not aware of any directive related to or permission related to such gloves, says spokesman Lt. Greg Pashley. Our directives are available to review online.

Its also worth noting that Clark, the officer accused of punching Cox, has studied mixed martial arts, jiujitsu and taekwondo, and was previously deployed with the Army in Iraq, according to grand jury transcripts from 2015. Bureau spokesman Pashley says Clark has been with the bureau for over 11 years and that his current assignment is listed as Personnel leave of service.

Cox says he suffered a concussion from the incident and, in the long term, has experienced worsening depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, short-term memory loss and forgetfulness.

Cox and Piucci say they met with District Attorney Mike Schmidt on June 24 to discuss possible criminal prosecution of Clark. If the DAs office declines to file charges, Piucci says he is ready to file a civil lawsuit.

This was a particularly egregious criminal assault. Its imperative that police officers face accountability, Piucci says. For better or worse, that responsibility rests on the DAs office as the only effective mechanism for holding officers criminal conduct accountable.
