Blackjacks immediate precursor was the English version oftwenty-onecalledVingt-Un, a game of unknown provenance, but probably of Spanish origin. The first written reference is found in a book by the Spanish authorMiguel de Cervantes, most famous for writingDon Quixote.

Cervantes was agambler, and the main characters of his tale Rinconete y Cortadillo, from Novelas Ejemplares, are a couple of cheats working inSeville. The game is played with the Spanish barajadeck. This short story was written between 1601 and 1602, implying thatventiuna was played in Castile since the beginning of the 17th century or earlier. Later references to this game are found in France and Spain.

The first record of the game in France occurs in 1768and in Britain during the 1770s and 1780s, but the first rules anywhere appear in Britain in 1800 under the name ofVingt-Un.Twenty-One appeared in the United States in the early 1800s, still known in those days asVingt-Un. The first rules were an 1825 reprint of the 1800 English rules. English Vingt-Un later developed into an American variant in its own right which was renamed blackjack around 1899.

There is a popular myth that when Vingt-Un(Twenty-One) was introduced into the United States in the early 1800s other sources say during the First World War and still others the 1930s gambling houses offered bonus payouts to stimulate players interest. One such bonus was a ten-to-one payout if the players hand consisted of theace of spadesand a blackjack(either thejack of clubsor thejack of spades). This hand was called a blackjack, and it is claimed that the name stuck to the game even though the ten-to-one bonus was soon withdrawn.

French card historian,Thierry Depaulis has recently debunked this story, showing that the name Blackjackwas first given to the game of American Vingt-Un by prospectors during theKlondike Gold Rush(189699), the bonus being the usual Ace and any 10-point card.

Since the term blackjack also refers to the mineralzincblende, which was often associated with gold or silver deposits, he suggests that the mineral name was transferred by prospectors to the top bonus in the game. He was unable to find any historical evidence for a special bonus for having the combination of an Ace with a black Jack.

The first scientific and mathematically sound attempt to devise an optimal blackjack playing strategy was revealed in September 1956. Roger Baldwin, Wilbert Cantey, Herbert Maisel, and James McDermott published a paper titled The Optimum Strategy in Blackjack in the Journal of the American Statistical Association. This paper would become the foundation of future sound efforts to beat the game of blackjack.Ed Thorpwould use Baldwins hand calculations to verify the basic strategy and later publish (in 1963) his famous bookBeat the Dealer.

BlackJack Cadilac band members have confirmed this morning that they will no longer be playing theArdrossan Christmas lights switch on as a number of the band have come down ill.

A NORTH Ayrshire rock band are all set to play at the Ardrossan Christmas lights switch on.

BlackJack Cadillac are a five-piece band formed by members from Irvine, Kilwinning, Ardrossan and West Kilbride.

Recently headlining two local gigs, the band have performed at the Ardrossan Music Experience before playing at Ayrs Venue 38.

Lead singer of the band, Claire Wolffe, told the Herald: We had the crowd up dancing and cheering and had a fantastic night at Venue 38, its a beautiful venue.

During lockdown, myself and Gee did live acoustic sets through Facebook, streaming on an online festival group I help to moderate, with over 177,000 people watching from all over the world.

We started our band Facebook page and so far we seem to be getting a good following with people watching our videos and wanting to see us play.

"We like to interact with any fans as we appreciate fully any support.

We all have very different and unique styles and personalities, but somehow we gel together very naturally and seem to just know how to play together effortlessly, thats when you know its right.

Timeline Television and Racecourse Media Group (RMG) have been awarded international production and distribution contracts for the Bahrain horseracing 2021-22 season at Sakhir Racecourse, following a competitive tender process.

Timeline, a major provider of outside broadcast, post-production, and studio-based services to all major UK networks, will provide broadcast facilities and crew to provide world-class race coverage for 10 fixtures, primarily for simulcast operators.

RMG, owned by 34 racecourse shareholders and responsible for a range of horseracing media rights businesses, will be producing a one-hour world feed programme for international broadcasters for the three feature races, the Bahrain International Trophy today (November 19) and the first and final races of the Bahrain Turf Club series on December 10 and February 18.

The undoubted highlight of the Bahrain racing season is the 500,000 Bahrain International Trophy, which has attracted a top-quality field of horses, hailing from as many as six different countries. RMG has secured widespread global coverage of the race, which will be available to view in 130 countries via broadcasters such as Fox Sports in the US, ESPN in Latin America and Caribbean, and SuperSport in Africa.

Executive Director at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club, Sheikh Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa, said: We are delighted to have secured the services of two world-class media companies in Timeline TV and Racecourse Media Group, who will greatly assist in taking the television production and delivery of Bahrain horseracing to the next level.

Timeline and RMG will also be tapping into the local production expertise of Bahrain TV, while on-screen graphics will be provided by MOOV. Timeline is providing a bespoke OB facility to provide an onsite broadcast operation centre.

Racecourse Media Group and Timeline have a long-established relationship. Both companies are now in their seventh season of producing and distributing the horseracing for the Dubai Racing Club, which stages the most valuable festival in the world, the $40m Dubai World Cup Carnival, and will apply similar world-class treatment to the horseracing output in Bahrain. Timeline Television has also built and run the playout facilities for Racecourse Media Groups TV channel, Racing TV, in Ealing Studios, West London since 2012.
