6-Banner Sunday: CJ Gunn suffers injury and another non-conference opponent is revealed – Inside the Hall

6-Banner Sunday is Inside the Halls weekly newsletter in partnership withThe Assembly Call. Nearly 8,000 Indiana fans receive the newsletter each week. In addition to appearing each week on the site, you can also opt to receive 6-Banner Sunday by email. A form to subscribe via email is available at the bottom of this weeks 6-Banner Sunday.

Welcome to another edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a joint production betweenThe Assembly CallandInside the Hallwhere we highlight the five most essential IU basketball stories of the past week, plus take a look at how the other IU sports programs are doing.

One more offseason week is in the books, which means were now one week closer to the Mike Woodson era tipping off in Bloomington.

In the meantime, well keep you up to date on all of the most important stories involving your Hoosiers.

Lets get to this weeks:

Class of 2022 commit CJ Gunn suffers a broken wrist. Chris Reynolds tabbed to head NCAA DI mens basketball committee in 2022-2023 IUs new president Pamela Whitten tours the IU athletic campus Indiana adds UNC Asheville to its non-conference slate for 2021-22 Under a month until Indianas Bahamas trip Hoosier Roundup

Indianas lone commit for 2022, CJ Gunn, suffered a broken left wrist on Thursday while competing at the Peach Jam. The injury is not considered serious, but it may keep Gunn out of action for up to five weeks.

If there is a silver lining, the injury was to the left wrist and not Gunns shooting hand. Not only does that alleviate concern for lingering issues going forward, but it will also allow Gunn to continue to work on several skills during his recovery.

You can read more details on Inside the Hall: CJ Gunn suffers broken left wrist at Peach Jam

The success of former Indiana players continued this week when former Indiana guard, Chris Reynolds, was selected to chair the NCAA DI mens basketball committee.

Reynolds played at Indiana from 1989-1993 during one of the most successful stretches in IU history. He was on two Big Ten Championship teams in 1991 and 1993, and the Final Four squad in 1992.

Reynolds currently serves as the vice president for intercollegiate athletics at Bradley.

Some fun images came out of Bloomington this week when new Indiana University President Pamela Whitten took time to tour the Indiana athletics facility with AD Scott Dolson.

Whitten assumed her new post on July 1 and is no doubt getting a crash course in all things IU. With the recent success of so many of IUs athletic teams, she will have the good fortune of presiding over what many are calling a potential golden age of Indiana athletics.

President Whitten also displayed a pretty tight spiral on Twitter as she threw a little touchdown pass to Indiana Football coach, Tom Allen, during her tour of Memorial Stadium. Welcome to Hoosier Nation, President Whitten! Nice pass!

Another date on the non-conference schedule has been filled. Indiana will host UNC Asheville at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Dec. 29th.

UNC Asheville is a part of the Big South Conference and finished last season with a 10-10 record. Last season UNC-A was a fast-paced, high-scoring team, who struggled on the defensive end to keep their opponents from scoring. This should be an interesting matchup and a test for Indianas transition defense.

This addition brings the total of non-conference games for the Hoosier to eight.

Indianas much an anticipated trip to the Bahamas is less than a month away. It is scheduled for Aug. 10-16. While there, Indiana will play a pair of exhibition games against BC Mega, a professional team from Serbia. Indiana fans will get their first glimpse at a Mike Woodson-led Indiana team, and all the new additions on the roster for 2021-22.

The games are not slated to be televised, however, there will be no shortage of media coverage from the event with all of the buzz that is surrounding the Indiana Basketball program.

KEEPING OPTIONS OPEN: Vaccine committee hasn’t decided on mixing vaccines but will explore all suggestions – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 5:47 pm

NASSAU, BAHAMAS National COVID-19 Vaccine Consultative Committee Co-Chair Ed Fields said yesterday that while it was not in his purview to decide whether the committee will mix-and-match COVID vaccines, the committee will explore the measure of mixing doses of AstraZeneca and Pfizer.

When contacted for comment, Fields said the committee will explore all suggestions made to it and will ultimately follow the science, guided by international health agencies on best practices.

We have not had to do that because we dont have doses to mix, he said.

So, thats sort of a moot scenario.

But Ill have to take that to the committee if we are going to be dealing with that once we get other vaccines.

As you know, weve always been guided by the science, so I am sure wherever the science leads us, thats the direction we will take. But I am not singularly qualified to make that statement off the cuff.

Asked if the committee plans to explore it, Fields said: Anything that is brought to our attention as it relates to the science, comes before the committee, so I am sure we will address it.

In a separate interview last night, Minister of Health Reward Wells said while studies suggest mixing vaccines is the best way, The Bahamas will await the final position of the World Health Organization (WHO) and advice of the governments health professionals.

Germany has obviously gone and mixed Pfizer and AstraZeneca and said they believe it is the best way to actually administer the vaccine, Wells said outside the Holy Trinity Activity Centre.

WHO, I do believe, is putting out its view that countries perhaps should not do that, but when you look at the facts that Germany has already engaged in that and put out a very definitive study that says the efficacy of both vaccines in their view is better if you mix AstraZeneca and Pfizer

The Bahamas government is not in the business of doing that; we follow the WHOs guidelines, and until WHO or our Ministry of Health professionals direct us in a particular direction, then we would go in that particular direction.

Eyewitness News reported on Wednesday that The Bahamas could join other countries in mixing doses of the UKs AstraZeneca and US Pfizer vaccines, which has been shown to provide an even greater immune response to the virus a point raised by Wells earlier this week.

The WHO has said public health agencies, and not individuals, should make decisions on mixing and matching COVID vaccines, based on available data.

As of July 10, more than 97,992 vaccine doses had been administered in The Bahamas, with 60,303 people receiving a first dose of the vaccine and 37,689 fully vaccinated.

There have been concerns about the availability of vaccine supplies in recent weeks, with the number of administered doses exceeding The Bahamas supply of vaccine doses.

In a statement yesterday, the committee advisedthat only second doses of the vaccine will be administered until additional supplies have been received.

Celebrity chefs are flocking to the Bahamas – Page Six

Posted: at 1:48 pm

Celebrity chefs are flocking to the Bahamas, as American visitors are traveling to the Caribbean at nearly pre-pandemic levels.

At the end of the month, Marcus Samuelsson is opening his latest venture, Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House, in the capital of Nassau, while Daniel Boulud opened his first venture in the country, Caf Boulud in Rosewood Baha Mar.

The two are joining Katsuya Uechi, who runs the eatery Katsuya, Dario Cecchini, who helms Carna, and Danny Elmaleh, of the outpost Cleo, who are already working in the area.

Meanwhile, Jean Georges Vongerichten is at Dune at the Ocean Club, Nobu Matsuhisa Nobu joins Todd English, who runs Olives and Bobby Flay, who has Mesa at Atlantis, while Jose Andres has Fish at the Cove.

The Bahamian people, the culture and, of course, the access to fantastic Caribbean ingredients is extremely exciting to be around, Samuelsson, the newest chef to hit the shores told The Post. Ive loved visiting the Bahamas for years, so its truly a dream come true to have a restaurant on this beautiful island. I am inspired by the warm Bahamian hospitality and close-knit community that I am looking forward to being a part of as well as welcoming to our restaurant.

Flight to Bahamas Delayed Over Face Mask Dispute – WebMD

Posted: at 1:48 pm

July 8, 2021 -- An American Airlines flight from North Carolina to the Bahamas was delayed overnight this week after several issues, including a group of teenage passengers who refused to wear masks.

Flight 893 was scheduled to leave Charlotte, NC, on Monday to travel to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. Instead, the flight left on Tuesday morning, according to NBC News

At first, the flight was delayed for a maintenance issue, the airline told USA Today. During the 2-hour delay on the tarmac, some of the students removed their face masks due to a lack of ventilation and quite unbearable conditions, said Breakaway Beach, a student travel company. The company was hosting a group of 47 high school graduates on a trip from Boston to Nassau.

The passengers then became disruptive to other customers and refused to follow crew member instructions while onboard, American Airlines told NBC News.

Per procedure, the customers involved were asked to exit the aircraft, the airline said in a statement. We expect our customers to comply with our policies when they choose to fly with us, and we take action when that is not the case.

There were other delays, including flight crew time limits and concerns with Tropical Storm Elsa, according to The Washington Post.

When a second plane arrived, the 172 passengers were directed to another gate at the airport, but the tour group wasnt allowed to reboard at that time, the newspaper reported. The captain made the decision after multiple tour group members refused to wear masks, played music with profane lyrics through a speaker, used foul language, and didnt stay in their seats on the plane while waiting on the tarmac.

Breakaway Beach said the entire group was labeled as unruly and disruptive due to the actions of a few of the graduates.

The act of one individual is not the responsibility of others, and the students that were abiding by the rules should not have had to endure this type of treatment, the company said. The group was treated in an improper and overly harsh manner, causing unnecessary stress and aggravation to the travelers and their parents from afar.

But a passenger who sat near the tour group told WSOC-TV 9 in Charlotte, NC, that a large majority of the graduates were being terrible kids by yelling, using foul language, and being obnoxious.

After numerous delays, American Airlines moved the flight to Tuesday morning because the plane would have arrived in the Bahamas after the immigration and customs office closed, USA Today reported.

Ultimately, American Airlines allowed the tour group to board Tuesdays flight after they all agreed to wear face masks and follow crew instructions.

Outer Banks Season 2: The Pogues Take The Bahamas in Explosive New Trailer – TVLine

Posted: at 1:48 pm

Dont let the beauty shots of The Bahamas lull you into a false sense of security: John B, Sarah Cameron and the Pogues are in a lot of danger in the newest footage from Outer Banks Season 2.

John B, we are fugitives in a foreign country, Sarah reminds her boyfriend in the full trailer, which Netflix released Wednesday. She then asks him not to do anything stupid but has she met him?

The approximately two-minute spot opens in familiar territory: Kiara, Pope and JJ mourn John B, whom they believe died in a storm alongside Sarah while trying to escape a (false) murder rap. Meanwhile, as John B says during the video above, hes very much alive but just trying to clear his name so this can all be over.

Eventually, John Bs pals realize hes still among the living the trailer shows the gang reunited, albeit running from some sort of imminent peril. On that front: Sarahs angry/unscrupulous father Ward is hot on their trail, and a new character Limbrey, played by Losts Elizabeth Mitchell, seems a little scary as she makes it clear to Pope that John B is not the only one Ward double-crossed.

And, of course, there are lots of guns, people jumping off boats, explosions and Kiara taking great pleasure in messing with the guys for being scared.

Outer Banks returns for Season 2 on Friday, July 30. Until then, press PLAY onthe trailer above to see what else you can glean about whats ahead, then hit the comments with your thoughts!

An American Airlines flight to the Bahamas had to be canceled after a group of unruly teenagers refused to wear masks – Yahoo News

Posted: at 1:48 pm

American Airlines flight. AP

An American Airlines flight had to be canceled Monday after a group of teens refused to wear masks.

Other passengers said the group, who were on their graduation trip, were being "terrible kids."

The flight, which was headed to the Bahamas, didn't take off until the following morning.

See more stories on Insider's business page.

An American Airlines flight to the Bahamas was canceled, and its passengers were delayed overnight after a group of high school students refused to wear their face masks.

Flight 893 was about to depart from Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday night when a mechanical issue forced 172 passengers to switch to a different airplane.

As they were waiting to be reboarded, some of the students in the group refused to follow mask instructions from the crew, a spokesperson for American Airlines told Insider.

"Passengers traveling on American Airlines Flight 893 from Charlotte to Nassau, Bahamas were reported to be noncompliant with the federal mask mandate, became disruptive to other customers, and refused to follow crew member instructions while onboard," the spokesperson said.

According to the Washington Post, some group members were also playing music with "profane" lyrics through a speaker and failing to stay in their seats on the plane.

A fellow passenger identified as Malik Banks told WSOC-TV 9 that around 80 percent of the people in the group - which was seated near him - "were being terrible kids."

Another passenger, Christina Randolph, said: "All they had to do was follow the rules, put the mask on, sit there. No smart-mouth comments. And they couldn't do it," according to WSOC-TV.

Randolph is a nurse who said she doesn't get much time off. "So when you finally get time off, you really want to be somewhere you want to be," she added.

Story continues

Travel company Breakaway Beach, which organized the trip for the students, claimed only one person out of 47 was behaving badly even though American Airlines said 30 of the students were involved in the incident, the Post reported.

"(T)he act of one individual is not the responsibility of others, and the students that were abiding by the rules should not have had to endure this type of treatment," Breakaway Beach president Eugene Winer said in a statement to the Post. "The group was treated in an improper and overly harsh manner, causing unnecessary stress and aggravation to the travelers and their parents from afar."

As a result of the incident, the flight had to be delayed overnight and passengers had to stay in airport hotels.

The teenagers were allowed to board the new flight the following morning after employees in Charlotte confirmed with them that they would comply with the mask policy, according to CNN.

The incident is one of the latest involving passengers refusing to comply with coronavirus safety measures aboard planes.

Since January 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration has received 2,500 reports of unruly behavior by passengers, most of which involve travelers refusing to comply with the federal mask mandate.

The rise in passenger aggression is having a significant effect on flight attendants across the country, who recently told Insider they've been struggling with their mental health.

Op-Ed: The Bahamas’ independence everyday men and women on a mission – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 1:48 pm

By Allyson Maynard-Gibson, QC

Majority rule and political independence were achieved without shedding even a drop of blood. I can imagine no circumstance that would allow any of that marvelously daring experience to recur, hence younger generations cannot fully relate to the sometimes wistful, sometimes delightful feelings of achievement, the gratitude, the noble thoughts, the willing sacrifices and the treasured memories of their elders of nearly forgotten days. They were not the experiences of sages, but of everyday men and women on a mission, brought together at the right time, in the right place, to play the right parts, to gain the right results, a great deal of good results. Put on More Speed by Sir Clement Maynard

We stand on the shoulders of those everyday men and women who created a country where people can fully develop their God-given potential and rise to the highest height. Bahamians are Rhodes Scholars, Olympians, Grammy and Oscar award winners, cultural giants, NASA scientists, award-winning computer code writers and so much more.

I recall seeing the Bahamian flag ascend the flagpole and unfurl into the breeze of an independent Bahamas. I do lift up my head every time that I sing the national anthem. You probably do too.

This year, we are still in a pandemic as we celebrate Bahamian independence.

Our legacy is the willing sacrifices of those everyday men and women who were on a mission. As we celebrate our 48th anniversary and approach of the golden anniversary of sovereignty, it is my prayerful hope that, in emerging from the pandemic and always, we shall ever recognize the supremacy of God, and in solemn praise, do all in our power to ensure that no persons life will be frustrated by deprivation and to support the fundamental rights and freedoms of the individual.

I thank and salute all the men who signed the Independence Order, especially those still living. On Independence Day 2021, let us remember and never forget that it takes good citizens, everyday people like you and me, to make The Bahamas great.

Happy Independence, Bahamas.
