Central Bank of the Bahamas Releases New $100 Banknote – CoinWeek

Posted: October 24, 2021 at 10:55 am

By Central Bank of the Bahamas

The Central Bank of The Bahamas released its new $100 banknote on October 6, 2021, completing the phased-in approach of the CRISP Evolution family of Bahamian banknotes that began in 2016 with the introduction of its CRISP Evolution $10 banknote.

Under its strategy to issue modern and secure banknotes, the Central Bank continues to combine advanced design perspectives with industry-first innovations to create culturally relevant banknotes. On this occasion, another national herothe late Arthur Dion Hanna, former Governor General, former Deputy Prime Minister, and a former Minister of Finance of the Commonwealth of The Bahamashas been added to the Bahamian banknote landscape.

The new $100 bill remains true to the cultural posture of Bahamian banknotes while incorporating easily identifiable security enhancements to help promote continued public confidence in banknotes. Like the CRISP Evolution $50, this note is printed on Landqarts Durasafe substrate. It also includes Cranes MOTION Surface technology, making it one of the most secure banknotes produced by the Central Bank to date. The most noticeable change to this note is its predominantly brown color with shades of red and yellow. The bill maintains the same dimensions as existing banknotes. The front bears a portrait of the late Arthur Dion Hanna and an image of a partially open Royal Poinciana flower in the center, while the back introduces a redesigned likeness of a blue marlin surrounded by marine life. The design-to-issuance process for this banknote took almost four years to bring to completion.

To aid with public education, the Central Bank added this note to its banknote app, CBB Banknote MAP, which showcases the security features of all CRISP Evolution banknotes. The app may be used to assist with the authentication of genuine Bahamian banknotes.

By Crane Currency

The Central Bank of The Bahamas has issued a new 100 dollar banknote into circulation from October 6, 2021. It has a unique combination of security features, including Crane Currencys MOTION SURFACE micro-optic stripe making it one of the most secure banknotes in the world.

The 12 mm wide micro-optic MOTION SURFACE stripe is integrated into the new 100 dollar banknote to make excellent use of its vertical design. Its secure and captivating effects include the 3D effect Topo the banknote industrys only visual effect scientifically shown to be authenticated by the public in a fraction of a second. But those lucky enough to hold the new banknote will want to take a longer look.

The MOTION SURFACE stripe also features schools of fish swimming at depths deep within the banknote, while others swim lazily near its surface in the famous blue waters of the Bahamas.

The banknote was printed by the Canadian Banknote Company on Durasafe, a paper-polymer-paper composite substrate produced by Swiss company Landqart. This is the first banknote printed on Durasafe to use MOTION SURFACE technology as its primary security feature.

In November 2020, the Central Bank of The Bahamas received the prestigious IACA Technical Award nomination for its 50 dollar banknote issued in 2019. It was the first implementation of Cranes RAPID security thread with the Durasafe substrate. The substrates unique construction provided the opportunity for showing off RAPID security threads dynamic and customized visual effects in the longest thread window as yet used on a circulating banknote.

Iowa golf programs hit the road for final fall events – UI The Daily Iowan

Posted: at 10:55 am

The Hawkeye mens team will travel to North Carolina as the Iowa womens squad flies to the Bahamas.

Paula Miranda practices her putt at Finkbine Golf Course on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2021.

Both the Iowa mens and womens golf teams will play their last events of the fall season this weekend. The Hawkeye men will head to North Carolina for the Williams Cup. And the Iowa women travel to the Bahamas to compete in the White Sands Bahamas Invitational.

The White Sands Bahamas Invitational begins Friday morning, and the Williams Cup kicks off on Monday.

In the Bahamas, the Hawkeyes will compete in a seven-team field at the Ocean Club Golf Course that includes Campbell, Florida International, Mercer, Miami, Nebraska, and Northern Illinois.

Hawkeye head coach Megan Menzel said her team is pumped to get to warmer weather this weekend. Though it will have to make some adjustments to play well in conditions that are not traditionally seen in the U.S.

She said the team is excited for their first visit to the Bahamas.

Theyre all just, you know, pumped about the golf course to have the ocean right by you and definitely a little bit different golf with the winds and the grass, Menzel said. Well have a little bit of adjustments to make, for sure, when we get down there. I think, you know, youre in a scenery like that and you know youre pretty inspired to play some good golf.

Freshman Paula Miranda said shes excited to play in the Bahamas because its a similar setting to Mexico her home country.

The Hawkeyes lineup will consist of Miranda, sophomore Klara Wildhaber, junior Lily Gentzkow, and seniors Dana Lerner and Manuela Lizarazu.

The mens team will compete at Eagle Point Golf Club this weekend alongside Georgia, Houston, Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, North Carolina State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Vanderbilt, and North Carolina. The Tar Heels are this weeks tournament hosts.

It looks great, mens golf head coach Tyler Stith said of Eagle Point Golf Club. They did have a PGA Tour event there. The Wells Fargo [Championship] was there in 2017. I think the winning score was not that good for a PGA Tour event. It was like 8-under-par. So, that tells me that, if they want, they can set up the golf course pretty hard. I doubt theyll do that this week, but I dont know what kind of challenge its going to be.

Freshman Ian Meyer, juniors Mac McClear, Ronan Kleu and Garrett Tighe, and senior Gonzalo Leal-Montero will represent the Hawkeyes in North Carolina this week.

Both teams have counted some impressive individual scores this year. Neither the Hawkeye men, nor women, however, have recorded a team finish higher than ninth this fall.

RELATED:Iowa womens golf finishes ninth at Ron Moore Intercollegiate

For the mens team, Kleu has registered top-10 finishes in both events hes played this fall. He hasnt carded a single over-par round this season.

Kleus teammate and reigning Big Ten champion Mac McClear is finding his stride again after a less-than-ideal start to the season.

Following back-to-back finishes outside the top 40, McClear rebounded with a tied-for-eighth showing at the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Classic earlier this month.

On the womens side, Miranda has been the Hawkeyes best player through three tournaments.

Miranda has grabbed ties for 32nd, 20th, and second as an individual.

RECUSED TO AVOID CONFLICT: Sears says any deliberations on former BPL board matter would be left for AG – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 10:55 am

NASSAU, BAHAMAS Minister of Works and UtilitiesAlfred Sears said yesterday that any report related to the disengagement of the former Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) Board would be passed onto Attorney General Ryan Pinder and he as minister responsible for BPL would recuse himself of any deliberations concerning the matter to avoid a conflict of interest.

According to Press Secretary in the Office of Prime Minister, Clint Watson, the report was completed and turned over to the government last November.

He said he was contacted on Wednesday about asked by a reporter whether he has received a report on BPL that was commissioned by the Office of the Prime Minister under the Minnis administration.

Sears said he had not up to that point.

And any report that would come to me would be sent to the attorney general because clearly in that matter I would be conflicted

I could not deliberate over a matter in which I was the lawyer outside of the government.

And certainly, I have made and had no deliberation in this matter.

The matter is in the hands of the attorney general and any issue that would come to me and my substantive position as minister of works, I would have to recuse myself.

Asked about the completion of the report and its release, Sears deferred the question to the Office of the Prime Minister.

He said it commissioned the report and is in possession of the same.

As has been reported, former Prime Minister Hubert Minnis commissioned an independent probe into the 2018 controversy surrounding the replacement of Bahamas Power and Lights, including then chairperson Darnell Osborne.

At the time, then Minister of Public Works Desmond Bannister told the media he intervened in the management of the power company after the relationship among board members had deteriorated with members locking horns on almost every critical issue at great cost to the company.

The then minister also claimed Osborne used BPLs funds for personal items such as makeup and a home security system.

Osborne denied the claims and sought legal action against the government on the grounds of wrongful dismal and defamation, along with two other board members Nick Dean and Nicola Thompson.

She said the makeup bill was covered by the company and related to public relations for BPL and the home security system was approved due to an internal matter that concerned her safety.

Sears represented Osbornes legal matter.

During his press briefing on Wednesday, Watson referred to the report as an interesting read that had been sent to the minister responsible for BPL for review.

He said: You want to read this and it may share a very clear picture as to why we never heard about this report which was presented in November of last year to the government.

It explains a lot. Ill say it and leave it as that.

While Minnis confirmed in mid-2019 that he had engaged a foreign entity to review the BPL board matter, he released no substantive details on the investigation since then.

It is unclear how the Davis administration or Attorney General Ryan Pinder intends to proceed with the matter.

Minnis engaged foreign management consulting firm FTI Consulting for the probe, which included interviews of BPLs former board, BPLs CEO and executive director, among others.

WATCH WHAT YOU’RE EATING: BAHFSA issues cautionary recall of ProSource onions from Mexico – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 10:55 am

NASSAU, BAHAMAS The Bahamas Agricultural Health & Food Safety Authority (BAHFSA) on Thursday announced a recall for all red, yellow, and white onions packaged by United States firm ProSource Incorporated of Hailey, Idaho, after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced an investigation into a salmonella outbreak in the US linked to whole, fresh onions, imported from Chihuahua, Mexico.

The outbreak in the US is multi-state, with more than 650 illnesses in consumers.

The FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised restaurants, retailers, and consumers not to eat, sell or serve red, yellow, and white onions supplied by ProSource Inc that were imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, dated July 1 through August 27, or products containing these onions.

ProSource has agreed to voluntarily recall such onions.

The FDA said it was issuing the update early in its investigation as part of its continued commitment to transparency and early communication.

On Thursday, BAHFSA advised that restaurants, retailers, any food service provider, and consumers do not eat, sell or serve red, yellow and white onions supplied by ProSource Inc for the import dates mentioned (July 1 through August 27).

Suppliers and distributors that repackage raw onions are advised to clean all surface and storage areas that come in contact with any contaminated onions from ProSource Inc and if potential cross-contamination or mixing of onions with the affected onions occurs, they are to discard the onions, it said.

In an interview with Eyewitness News, BAHFSA Director of Food Dr Patricia Johnson said the measure was a precautious step as the extent of imports in the country from the suppliers that use ProSource onions remains unclear.

Unfortunately, The Bahamas does not have a food registry in place as yet, so we are not able to determine in real-time if those onions would have come here and, of course, the investigation with CDC and FDA havent identified any other distributors or any other type of products that may have been implicated in this Samonella outbreak, she said.

Were unable to tell, but the warning to the public is specifically to restaurants and any food service provider, retailers, wholesalers, and what have you is to check their inventory to ensure the label doesnt say it is from ProSource. If its from ProSource Incorporated, they need to throw them out.

In addition to that, they need to ensure that they wipe down, wash down and sanitize any countertops or storage area they may have had the onions in, particularly any of the wholesalers who may have gotten it in bulk.

When contacted, SuperValue Owner Rupert Roberts said: Im talking to our supplier at the moment and I understand this has been way back in August, so nobody would still have onions from that.

Theyre claiming we never had any of this product and we dont think any of their competitors shipped any of this product to The Bahamas, but if it was shipped since August, theyve been sold or been thrown out.

Posted: at 10:55 am

Last year, the pandemic proved to resort developers that wealthy New Yorkers want to put down seriously expensive roots abroad in the form of baller vacation villa sanctuaries. Now, new beach spreads are going up by the score in sun hubs like the Bahamas, Mexico and Grenada.

Bakers Bay Golf and Ocean Club, located on a three-mile sandy spec in the Sea of Abaco in the Bahamas, has been a real estate hub for loaded putters since it was built in 2004. But in 2019, it was virtually leveled by Hurricane Dorian.

After the catastrophe of Hurricane Dorian, the entire Bakers Bay family, our members, owners and team members, all banded together to restore Bakers to a level of greatness, Michael Meldman, the founder of Discovery Land Company, Bakers Bays developer, tells Alexa.

Now, what was old is new again. The resorts golf-centric, amenity-rich offerings include a 1.3-acre estate with a two-story, five-bedroom villa that boasts 10,000 square feet and is asking $32.2 million.

On the other side of the Caribbean, in Grenada, the 43-key luxury getaway Silversands has just debuted a new collection of eight private homes all on the islands best beach, Grand Anse starting at $7 million. Its top villa is a four-bedroom, 6,800-square-foot beach spread with bespoke furnishing, a private pool, 2,215 square feet of outdoor deck space and a $12.7 million price tag. With a focus on family entertaining, big efforts went into the kitchen, including Poggenpohl cabinetry and appliances by Gaggenau and Miele.

But if being anchored to a continent is your jam, head to Mayakoba, Mexico, just south of Cancun, where Rosewood just debuted its splashy signature private homes. These Rosewood Residences are decked out in costly travertine and local marble with double-height, all-glass living rooms. The largest among them is a five-bedroom, seven-and-a-half-bathroom beaut with 6,813 square feet, a private pool and access to all of Rosewoods luxe hotel amenities asking just $6.35 million.

Time to buy something hot.

The 2020 US Open winner participated in the PLDA world long drive championship earlier this month. At his maiden appearance, he shocked us all with his performance that led him to the finals, where he finished 7th. His longest drive came at 412 yards, which couldnt compete with Kyle Berkshires 422 yard bomb.

Furthermore, in disappointing news for him, the USGA and R&A recently took action against the increasing drive distances on the PGA Tour. In a new rule, they capped the club length from 48 inches to 46 inches in a bid to prevent golfers from exploiting the courses. This news has caused an uproar, and it is difficult to say whether the move will prove beneficial or not.

Farewell to giants of tourism – Bahamas Tribune

Posted: at 10:55 am

EDITOR, The Tribune.

Two giants in the Tourism-Hotel business of The Bahamas passed within days of each other... significant as both played such an important part in the development of the employees and their appointments and remuneration.

Tom Bastian stalwart of Hotel union and J Barry Farrington the right hand of Sir Sol Kerzner, Atlantis who brought the Bahamas from and out of Tourism doldrums into big time.

These were clear candidates for the highest National Honours, but history will recall neither received such an accolade.

National Honours, Editor, are for such people.... should never be given posthumously in fact that right in the National Awards should immediately be removed from the Act governing the Awards........have you ever heard anything more stupid?

Why should the average age of awardees be in the high 60s or even older?

UK Queens Honours are a perfect example awards for years have been given on merit be you young, middle aged or elderly.

Time we changed ours. Prime Ministers may never grant such awards to themselves also.

Tom and JB you both gave so much. We, the country salutes you both.....God speed!

A Family First: Kai and Kas to Share Opening Night Together – Brooklynnets.com

Posted: at 10:55 am

Kasprintina Ellis has missed out on too many important moments in her sons life. Being there for events like Kais high school and prep school graduations, his first game at the University of Texas and the NCAA Tournament simply werent possible because of ongoing visa restrictions.

But when Kasprintina (Kas for short) first learned Kai would be declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft scheduled for this past July 29thin New York City after his second collegiate season, it looked like she would once again be stuck in the familys native Bahamas watching everything unfold on a laptop or screen. But life, thankfully, has an amazing way of working out sometimes.

When he declared for the draft, I decided I would reapply [for my visa] after I was denied three times, Kas explained. I applied in March and they gave me an appointment for September 7. Im like, Thats not going to get me to the draft in time. So, I put in to have it expedited and they said they couldnt help me right now because of COVID. They had a limited amount of appointments, but I tried again and they said theyd see what they could do to expedite it.

She added, I got my appointment expediated [to early July] and had to do an interview. I went into the offices and they asked what the purpose of my visa application was. I said, My son is being drafted into the NBA. They said, Oh, thats pretty cool, and in my head Im thinking, Itd be pretty cool if youd give me my visa so that I can go. He asked a few more questions and said, Okay, I think youre approved and should be able to make it to the draft.

Kas immediately phoned Kai, who at the time, was about to begin a pre-draft workout with the Orlando Magic. It was amazing.I was on my way to the workout and my mom called me and was like, The visa came through!, recalls Kai. That was something we were waiting on because when you go to apply, they say no a lot and they already told her no before. I was so happy. It was dope and a really good feeling.

And just like that, the burden Kas was carrying of not making it to New York City instantly vanished. No more sleepless nights, no more tears, no more fear of missing out, yet again. The feeling was perhaps too good to be true and it took a funny encounter on Kas initial voyage to Los Angeles where Kai was training before the draft to ease whatever remained of her initial skepticism.

I get to the airport and the lady says, You havent been to the United States in five years do you need to get fingerprinted?, Kas said. Im thinking, Do you always get fingerprinted? I told her I hadnt traveled in five years, so she told me I had to go to secondary interrogation.

So, I get there and its a very scary, tense environment because they can tell you that you cant go. Im talking to this lady and she asks me why I havent been to the United States in five years and I said because of my situation, I couldnt travel without a visa. She says, Okay, you just got a visa two weeks ago? Why? and I said, My son is being drafted into the NBA. She responds, Kai Jones is your son? Youre Kai Jones mom? Oh my god! I was looking at her and asked if she knew Kai and she was like, I follow him! She was an American, not Bahamian. She apparently met him when he came to the airport one time. She was so excited she completely forgot she was questioning me!

Kas would make it to Los Angeles, then to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for draft night. Kai, who worked out for the Hornets twice in the weeks leading up to the big event, would be taken by the New York Knicks with the 19thoverall selection, then had his rights traded to Charlotte in exchange for a future first-round pick.

Its really so unbelievable to see him come up that stage and hear his name called, said Kas, on the day after the draft while in Charlotte. That had to be the most exhilarating feeling ever to know something he worked so hard for, he accomplished. He always said, I want to go to the NBA, Mom, and I said, Yes, you can. He continued to stay focused like that and hes in the NBA now. This is an unbelievable experience.

The journey to Charlotte was just as equally long for Kai as it was for Kas. The two plus Kais other siblings (he has four: Kaden, Dylan, Luke and Liam) moved from The Bahamas to Boca Raton, FL when Kai was 11, so Kas could attend Florida Atlantic University on a student visa.

I was running track, playing basketball in PE, during break time and lunch breaks. I would always just play and hoop, says Kai. I was one of those kids that was a gym class legend getting buckets. I never really made the basketball team in seventh or eighth grade I kept getting cut. I kept working on my game, wearing ankle weights to school. Getting up at 5 AM to lift. I was doing all these things and the coach was still cutting me. I just kept working from there, had a growth spurt and grew to 66 when I was fifteen.

By that point though, money had dried up for Kas schooling, her visa expired and the whole family was forced to move back to The Bahamas. We ended up having to stay [in The Bahamas] a year, says Kai. I was training the whole time, but didnt really get on a basketball team because the school I went to didnt have one. I was playing pickup, playing around, getting in some showcase events to get my name out there. I made a video of me training and showed a high school coach in the US named Treig Burke, who was the coach at Orlando Christian Prep. I went there by myself, tried out and then made the team.

Coincidently, the city where years later, Kai would find out his mothers visa was finally approved is also the same one where his basketball career really started taking flight. He lived with both his aunt and trainer during his senior year of high school in Orlando, marking the first time he had ever competed in varsity-level basketball (despite having already played in Basketball Without Borders and for the Bahamian Junior National Team) and also lived away from home. That first year I was like, Dang, this is tough without parents, he says. Im only seventeen, not a lot of money, kind of hungry all the time. Youre not really eating that good of food and youre training really hard.

After leading OCP to a Class 3A Florida state championship, Kai continued to grow and was invited to the NBA Global Camp in Treviso, Italy during the summer of 2018 before beginning a postgraduate season at powerhouse Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. Things got easier, he says, thanks to maturation and a strong support system. Following a National Prep title, Kai enrolled at the University of Texas, where he played two seasons before entering the NBA.

Kas tried to keep up with Kais games the best she could, which was no easy task down in Nassau. Sometimes the games didnt air on channels in the Bahamas, she said. I watched on laptops, phones, went to friends houses who may have had a satellite. We have people from our church who are big fans of Kai and they took me to this web shop, where I stood up and watched him play his first game at Texas. I had to see him play by any means necessary.

Two months ago, Kai made his Hornets debut at NBA Summer League out in Las Vegas, where Kas was finally in attendance as her sons number one fan. Shell also be at the teams regular season opener against Indiana on Wednesday night, where Kai will race out of the Spectrum Center tunnel and onto the court for the very first time. Im sure its going to be emotional, says Kai. Shes very proud of me. A moment of pride seeing how far Ive come and the work that Ive put in. Im sure shes going to be really excited to be there and see me in person.

Yall are going to hear my mouth everywhere, said Kas, who is now free to travel between the US and The Bahamas and is temporarily residing in Cleveland with Kaden, while her other three children are back home with Kais father, Deyvon and stepmother. Theyre going to be like, Thats Kai Jones mom! Im going to be the loudest mom in there.

Shes very enthusiastic, adds Kai. She always believed in me. I used to do the long jump [in track] and if I had a bad jump or a scratch, shed pull me aside and say, Kai, dont worry about it. Just go ahead and jump. Just have fun. She would always be that voice of encouragement. Thats what she was like.

Whether his mother is making noise, sitting quietly, cheering, clapping or whatever is not super-important to Kai. The only thing that matters now is that theyve made it to the NBA together. And Kas will be right there in person watching Kais next chapter unfold.

BILLS ON THE AGENDA: Govt to prioritize VAT reduction, pension increase and merchant shipping – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 10:54 am

NASSAU, BAHAMAS The government is expected to introduce three major pieces of legislation before the end of the year.

During a press briefing on Wednesday, Press Secretary Clint Watson advised that those bills currently on the legislative agenda include a bill to reduce value-added tax (VAT), a bill to increase pension and a merchant shipping bill in keeping with the governments blue economy mandate.

The purpose of the legislation is to bring much-needed relief for the Bahamian people and set the foundation for economic recovery, Watson said.

In its Speech from the Throne, the Davis administration promised to reduce VAT to 10 percent across the board and introduce a bill to enhance the countrys competitive edge in the global maritime industry.

Asked how the government intends to fund the increase in pension, given the recent hit to the countrys economy, Watson advised that the prime minister will consult with those involved to determine how to fund it.

He said Davis will speak to the rollout of these initiatives when he addresses Parliament.

The House of Assembly will meet for the first time since the Opening of Parliament and Speech from The Throne on October 27.

As for the governments plans for a reduction in VAT, Watson said the government will release any study or information that will guide its decision.
