Celebrity Cruise Ship Denied Entry to Nassau in the Bahamas – Cruise Hive
Posted: at 4:42 pm
The Celebrity Apex cruise ship has not been allowed to make her scheduled call at Nassau, Bahamas on Friday, January 7. It comes as the cruise line says that authorities denied the vessel due to an emergency decision by local heal authorities. Celebrity Cruises sent out a letter to guests on the current sailing informing them of the cancellation.
Its another last-minute port cancellation for a cruise ship sailing in the Caribbean and the Bahamas. This time it is Celebrity Apex which has been denied entry to the Bahamas due to changes that country made in their entry requirements for cruise ships. The vessel will be spending a day at sea instead of guests spending the day ashore in Nassau.
The letter sent to guests on the current sailing from Captain Panagiotis Skylogiannis, At this time, the Bahamas has made a change in their entry requirements for cruise ship visits due to the COVID-19 Omicron variant. As a result of this emergency decision by health authorities, we will be replacing our scheduled call to Nassau with a relaxing day at Sea. We will now continue sailing towards our final destination in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for disembarkation in Port Everglades this Saturday as scheduled.
Which health requirements the cruise line is talking about is unclear at this point. The Bahamas recently updated their testing requirements, but these are only in place for visitors staying longer than 48 hours.
Celebrity Apex sails with a full vaccination mandate for passengers and crew members. Guests are also required to test negative before the cruise. Celebrity Cruises has not made any official statements on whether there are any active cases of COVID-19 onboard.

The Edge-class vessel is on a 5-day Bahamas Cruise sailing roundtrip from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale which departed on January 3. The vessel spent one day at sea and a day in Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic, and will slowly make her way back to Fort Lauderdale where she is expected to arrive on Saturday, January 8.
Guests who had shore excursions booked through the cruise line will be receiving a full refund to their onboard account. Guests with outside arrangements will need to contact their tour operators independently, although Celebrity says they will be helping by providing phone lines.
Many will see another cancellation by a port of call a worrying development for the industry. Indeed, just last week, MSC cruises were denied from their private island. And multiple ships have been denied entry to a multitude of ports of call in recent weeks.
Royal Caribbean, which is the parent company of Celebrity Cruises, issued a statement last week that the issues we see now are having a significant short-term effect but will likely not have much of a long-term effect.
Richard Fain, CEO of Royal Caribbean: Omicron is having a big short-term impact on everyone, but many observers see this as a major step towards COVID-19 becoming endemic rather than epidemic. We dont like to see even one case, but our experience is a fraction of the comparable statistics of virtually any other comparable location or industry.
We are constantly learning and adjusting as Omicron appears to be ushering in a new phase in the fight against COVID-19. We expect these factors to have a negative impact in the short term but are optimistic they will lead us to a more pervasive but less severe health environment.
So while the cancellations are certainly affecting guest cruise vacations, according to Royal Caribbean, this issue will likely not persist. The next voyage for Celebrity Apex, which sails on January 8, will be a 7-day cruise to Belize, Mexico, and another scheduled call for Nassau.
Hopefully, by then, we will know what those updated health protocols are that prevented the vessel from calling in the Bahamas this week.

‘Fantasy Island’: The 200million heaven on earth cruise passengers can enjoy – Express
Posted: at 4:42 pm
MSC Cruises is the proud owner of Ocean Cay, a 95 acre resort which cost a staggering 200million to create. The newly developed paradise provides royal treatment to guests who expect the very best.
The island, described as 'pristine', welcomes cruise ships of 4,000 passengers.
Greeted by applause, guests are treated like kings and queens, with every whim catered for.
A 'fantasy island like no other', Ocean Cay allows visitors to enjoy water sports, excursions, and entertainment.
One of the standout performances on the island is the light show.
A lighthouse structure, worth a whopping 1million, is 'probably the most expensive lighthouse in the world', according to Lighting Engineer Mark Watkins.
Arguably, it is also 'probably the most useless lighthouse', as it doesn't actually function as one.
Mark stated: "Ships will be careering into the edge going, 'It didn't keep me off the reef,'" suggesting that the island is more flashy than practical.
But guests appear to love the spectacle and splendour of the place, with one passenger describing it as "totally phenomenal" and an "experience of a lifetime".
There's shopping opportunities galore, with stores selling products ranging from jewellery to handmade chocolates.
Guest are 'spoilt for choice' with food and drink; the beach bar is restocked with 1,000 litres of wine, 3,000 litres of beer and thousands of pounds worth of spirits whenever the boat docks.
To feed hungry guests, 2,000 tonnes of food is unloaded from the cruise ships.
Of course, "not everything runs smoothly", and "the job never stops".

Indeed, feeding everyone is a "mind blowing enterprise".
Gareth Brown, Revenue Director MSC Cruises stated: "The expectations are high, they know what good service looks like."
One passenger said it was "absolutely beautiful" and unlike any other cruise experience she had been one.
The "totally phenomenal" staff are there to wait on guests hand and food, even providing a special service for the Yacht Club Class.
An elite 200 passengers receive an exclusive experience, and can enjoy their own private part of the ship and island.

Splashing out on suites costing in excess of 1,000 per night, the Yacht Club Class can expect their very own lounges, pool and restaurant - even their "very own butler" ensuring that "their every need is catered for".
The island resort also provides a living for those who live locally.
Operations Manager Michelle McGreggor said: "Everything is crafted and made in the Bahamas by Bahamians. How more authentic can you get?"
A heaven on earth, one visitor summed up the experience: "It's perfect. I couldn't ask for more."

Daniel Levy Travels to the Bahamas for Meeting With Tottenham Hotspur Owner Joe Lewis – Last Word on Baseball
Posted: at 4:42 pm
As Daniel Levy travels to the Bahamas for talks with Tottenham Hotspur owner Joe Lewis, he will be looking for approval to help Antonio Conte and director of football Fabio Paratici make the signings they require in the January transfer window.
According to Matt Law of The Telegraph, Singaporean multi-billionaire, Forrest Li was given a tour of the Tottenham Hotspur stadium recently and that tour has sparked rumours of investment in the North London club.
It is understood that Levy has headed to the Bahamas, where Lewis is based, to discuss the scope of the transfer budget for the January transfer window. Antonio Conte was honest on his assessment of where he sees the current side and some of his comments will have been ringing in Levys ears. Levy rarely misses a game, whether it be home or away, but for the last four matches, the chairman has been nowhere to be seen.
One player that Tottenham have been linked with is Wolverhampton Wanderers Adama Traore and the BBC have said a 20 million deal is being worked on. Conte is reportedly interested in the attacking player and sees him as being a potential right-wing-back for Spurs, although questions remain over his delivery in the final third.
There is no doubt that he is fast, powerful and difficult to shake off the ball and can alter the flow of play quickly, and it should be noted that Conte turned a maligned player in Victor Moses into a vital piece of his Premier League winning Chelsea side. In the current climate, 20 million could be seen as value for money.
Lewis is somewhat of an enigma when it comes to his ownership of Tottenham Hotspur and has rarely been seen at either White Hart Lane or the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving things to Levy although, even he is seen but rarely heard and continues to split opinion in the fanbase.
Fans and Conte will now hope that Lewis will loosen the purse strings and the painful rebuild can finally begin at last.

LET THE CHIPS FALL: Further in-depth probe of Parks and Beaches contracts to be carried out – EyeWitness News
Posted: January 3, 2022 at 2:23 am
NASSAU, BAHAMAS The prime minister has instructed the Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches Authority to further inquire into the findings of an audit report into the internal controls and operations of the authority.
The audit, which was conducted by K Christie & Co after the government came into office and released by Press Secretary Clint Watson earlier this month, revealed that hundreds of thousands of dollars were issued during the last administration without any real identifiable need.
Asked about the report during his final press conference at the of the year yesterday, Davis said: The preliminary observations made by the accounting firm that was engaged reveal many troubling issues that require further in-depth investigation and the instructions are along that line to carry forward with those in-depth inquiries to see where it leads and wherever it leads, the chips will fall where they may.
The revelation came after growing concern with contractors who claimed they have not been paid by the Davis administration for work completed and their contracts have not been honored.
The government has said it decided to terminate all current contracts in a legal manner but assured that every contractor who has a valid, legal contract will be paid.
The preliminary observations made by the accounting firm that was engaged reveal many troubling issues that require further in-depth investigation.
Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis
For their contracts to be honored, every vendor will have to provide the basic KYC documentation for the maintenance of proper internal records, including IDs and bank details, and be tax and NIB-compliant.
The report concluded that the Bahamas Public Parks and Public Beaches Authority requested and received consistent supplemental funding beyond its annual budget in the last three fiscal years.
The authority ran over budget in its award of contracts by $6.8 million between July 2019 and June 2020, and by $13.7 million between July 2020 and June 2021.
Up to October 31 of the current fiscal year July 2021 to July 2022 the authority spent nearly $9.3 million of its annual budget and would have overspent by $12.7 million if allowed to stay on that trajectory, the report outlined.
The authority was paying out some $2.7 million monthly to 12,000 to 14,000 vendors, according to newly instated Chairman of the Public Parks and Public Beaches Board McKell Bonaby.

This year’s Bahamas Bowl most-watched edition of event in four years – Bahamas Tribune
Posted: at 2:23 am
By RENALDO DORSETT
Tribune Sports Reporter
THE 2021 Bahamas Bowl was the most-watched edition of the event in four years.
The Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders claimed the Prime Ministers Cup with a 31-24 win over the Toledo Rockets at the Thomas A Robinson Stadium on December 18 and was just one of the games to benefit from college footballs increase in viewership across the board.
According to Sports Media Watch, the Bahamas Bowl drew a rating of 0.6 - an increase of four percent and 851,000 viewers, an increase of 15 percent from the previous year.
Freshman quarterback Nicholas Vattiato completed 23-35 passes for 270 yards and two scores to earn Offensive MVP honours for the Blue Raiders. Senior linebacker DQ Thomas won Defensive MVP honours with a team-high eight tackles, 1.5 tackle for loss and a pass broken up.
Trailing 17-14 after three quarters, the Blue Raiders scored 17 consecutive points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 31-17 lead.
The Bahamas Bowl kicked off the college bowl season and featured two teams making their second trip to The Bahamas. MTSU lost the 2015 Bahamas Bowl appearance to Western Michigan Broncos, 45-31. Toledo came up a field goal short in the 2018 Bahamas Bowl to FIU, 35-32 the Rockets most recent bowl game appearance.
The 2015 matchup between the Broncos and Blue Raiders drew in 2.1 million viewers on ESPN.
The Bahamas Bowl is owned and operated by ESPN Events, a division of ESPN. ESPN Events owns and operates a portfolio of 35 collegiate sporting events nationwide.
The roster includes five early-season college football games, 17 college bowl games, 12 college basketball events and a college softball event, which accounts for approximately 400 hours of live programming, reaches nearly 64 million viewers and attracts over 800,000 attendees each year.
Nine of the first 12 bowl games this season saw an increase in viewership.
ESPNs top bowl game on its schedule thus has been the Armed Forces Bowl which featured Army and Missouri and averaged 2.57 million viewers. It represented a 14 percent increase from the 2020 game and was the most watched edition of the game since 2018.

EDUCATION RECOVERY: Some 8000 students to be tracked down and targeted in learning loss program – EyeWitness News
Posted: at 2:23 am
NASSAU, BAHAMAS Minister of Education Glenys Hanna-Martin said yesterday that the ministry intends to directly target some 8,000 students who were inactive on the virtual learning platform throughout the COVID-19 pandemic in order to design education recovery strategies for their learning loss.
Hanna-Martins comments came as officials advised that the reopening of schools will be postponed for two weeks due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases. Public schools were set to reopen for hybrid learning on January 11.
In an interview with Eyewitness News, she explained that officials are collecting the necessary data to track down those students believed to have been out of school during the nearly two-years-long pandemic.
We are in the process of identifying who these children are and which schools they are registered in, with a view to targeting each child, Hanna-Martin said.
Education officials are expected to meet on Friday to address these concerns and the way forward on several other key issues.
Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) President Belinda Wilson said yesterday that it is understandable that the face-to-face component for the reopening of school has been delayed amid the new Omicron variant.
The concern still exists as to how the thousands of students who have not accessed education for almost two years will be accommodated, Wilson said.
In addition to the thousands of students, there are hundreds of teachers who were and still are unable to utilise the MOE virtual platform
The Bahamas Union of Teachers awaits the plans as to how quality education will be delivered by all of our teachers to all of our students.
In the initial rollout of the virtual learning platform, there were criticisms that it had shortcomings, including a lack of stability when thousands finally registered.
We are still not convinced that the challenges and the glitches that have been experienced by teachers, students and parents, with the Ministry of Education learning management system, Wilson continued.
We are not convinced that that has been properly addressed and corrected, to ensure that as we continue in a virtual mode that education will be successfully imparted to the thousands of students throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
She added that the union awaits the details to be garnered from the upcoming meeting with education officials and the plans to address all concerns.

NO WILDING OUT: PM tells Bahamians don’t go to hotels for New Year’s and forget ad hoc parties too – EyeWitness News
Posted: at 2:23 am
Curfews and lockdowns off the table, says DavisPM suggests outdoor events may be safer than indoor bars/nightclubs
NASSAU, BAHAMAS Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis yesterday defended the governments decision to allow hotels to continue to host gatherings amidst a recent spike in new COVID-19 infections, but asked Bahamians to avoid those hotels.
During his final address of the year at the weekly Office of the Prime Minister press conference, Davis said the health protocols are designed to reduce transmission risk while still supporting economic activity.
Full hotels are fantastic news for our economy, but bringing people together increases risks.
Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis
Several ad hoc holiday events were canceled or postponed after the government suspended all approvals for large gatherings and limited indoor gatherings to no more than 20 people, while outdoor gatherings may have up to 30.
These restrictions, however, do not apply to gatherings at hotels.
Davis acknowledged that Bahamians have questioned why hotel properties are allowed to have outdoor New Years Eve events and said the questions are more than fair, but noted:Our health protocols are designed to reduce transmission risk while still supporting economic activity.
Often, those twin goals are in contradiction with each other. Its not an easy balancing act, and you may think we get some of these decisions wrong.
But the primary health goal is to slow transmission among Bahamians, to protect our people and to protect our hospitals from the coming onslaught of cases.
With that in mind, we are asking the hotels to take steps to protect Bahamian staff, and we are asking Bahamians to reconsider attending these events.
Davis added: These hotels are full and their guests are going to socialize on New Years Eve.
It may be safer to be outside at a concert instead of inside at bars, nightclubs and the casino.
Our economic crisis has been so prolonged and so severe that I am not considering any serious shutdown of economic activity.
Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis
I hope that is the case I dont want anyone to get sick in The Bahamas. This is the world we live in now; full hotels are fantastic news for our economy, but bringing people together increases risks.
As of Tuesday, the total number of cases in the country stood at 24,269. Of those, 1,574 were active while 22 were hospitalized.
The government began the distribution of medical-grade masks around the country yesterday and is expected to launch its free COVID testing program on New Providence in the upcoming days.
Davis assured that curfews and lockdowns are not on the table as the country moves to tackle the recent increase in new COVID-19 cases.
We think were able to devise measures that would contain behaviors of our people, that would not require impacting economic activity, he said.
He added:Our economic crisis has been so prolonged and so severe that I am not considering any serious shutdown of economic activity.
