Bahamas Trade Information Service Portal Launched – The Eleutheran

Posted: April 7, 2017 at 9:17 pm

NASSAU, The Bahamas Prime Minister and Minister of Finance the Rt. Hon. Perry Christie speaks, on April 6, 2017, during the Official Launch of The Bahamas Trade Information Service Portal, held at the British Colonial Hilton. The initiative is the first of its kind in The Bahamas and one of only a few Trade Information Portals in the Caribbean Region. The establishment of the Trade Portal, in collaboration with The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation, is an important part of the Governments ongoing efforts to diversify the Bahamian economy by expanding trade in both goods and services with regional, hemispheric and international trading partners. (BIS Photo/Derek Smith)

The objective of the portal is to diversify the economy through trade initiatives and to address the need for reliable, current and readily available trade information.

The portal, which is a public-private partnership with the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation, will serve as an online platform for buyers, sellers and businesses through which to communicate as well as conduct the operations of their business.

As one of its main objectives, the portal would provide businesses with reliable trade data, collected, collated and conveniently stored on a centralized and user-friendly platform. Consequently, Bahamian entrepreneurs would have online access to market access requirements for a given commodity/category of commodity in foreign markets of interest, and vice versa.

Additionally, the Portal would serve as an important business facilitation measure as it will reduce the cost and time required to access trade information thereby increasing the ease of doing business for Bahamas-based businesses and their trading partners.

Further, the portal would develop The Bahamas as an important value-added trade centre in the Caribbean based on the utilization of its numerous assets. These include trade logistics infrastructure (container port, transshipment terminals and shipyard repair facilities), its strategic location at the crossroads of the Americas, its free trade zone potential, and recognition as a world-class financial centre.

Funds for the portal were derived from grant funding provided under the 10th tranche of the European Development Fund (10th EDF), a technical assistance component made available by the European Union through the CARIFORUM-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The EPA, the first reciprocal trade agreement signed by The Bahamas in 2008, seeks to strengthen economic and trade relations between the signatories through the enhancement of trade and investment flows.

Team Bahamas In Davis Cup Tie Today – Bahamas Tribune

Posted: at 9:17 pm

TEAM BAHAMAS - Shown (l-r) are Marvin Rolle, Spencer Newman, Phillip Major Jr and Justin Lunn.

By BRENT STUBBS

Senior Sports Reporter

bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

SPENCER Newman has drawn to play Hugo Dellien in the frst singles match today and Phillip Major Jr will take on Federico Zeballos in the other match as the American Zone II Davis Cup tie gets underway today in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.

Speaking with The Tribune yesterday after the tie at the Club de Tenis Santa Cruz, player/captain Marvin Rolle said they are all in good spirits as they look to win the tie and remain in Zone II for 2018.

If they lose the three-day tie that will be completed on Sunday, the Bahamas will then be relegated to Zone III.

Spencer was drawn to play the first match and so we are just going to go out there and try our best, Rolle said. We got a chance to play on centre court today. We didnt have much of a chance during the week because of the rain.

But centre court plays a little different from the other courts and we got a chance to play on it. But we are looking forward to it. PJ is also looking good and Justin is ready to support them. If he needs to jump in, hes going to be ready. We feel good as a team.

Rolle, who is scheduled to team up with Lunn to play in the pivotal doubles on Saturday, said the conditions have not been what they expected, but they have made the necessary adjustments.

We havent gotten to practice much because today was the first dry day, said Rolle of the few days the team spent there trying to get acclimatised. I heard that it might rain tomorrow (today), but even if it doesnt, we have to be ready, he stated. We know that they have to roll the clay on the court, so hopefully by the time we are ready to play, it will be good to go.

As the first out of the gate, Newman said hes looking forward to the challenge.

Today, we got in two hits as the weather cleared up, said Newman, who noted that his girlfriend has made the trek from Florida to join a small group of Bahamian supporters on the sideline. So we got some dry courts and we got on stadium court. This is the best Ive felt. Were ready to go.

Newman, the top seeded player for the Bahamas, will take on Dellien, Bolivias No.2 player who is ranked at 600 in singles and 619 in doubles.

Immediately following their match, Major Jr will take to the courts against Bolvias top seed Zeballos, who comes in ranked at 485 in singles and 361 in doubles.

The last few days it was raining a lot and we didnt get to practice like we wanted to, Major Jr said. This is part of tennis, so its okay.

Im feeling very well and Im eager to play. I want to see what we can bring. Hopefully we can bring our A game. We cant tell what the future holds, but Im going to go prepared to do my best and see what that brings.

However the tie goes, Lunn said hes prepared to step on the court and play whenever he gets the nod from Rolle.

By the look of today, everybody is playing good, everybody is playing solid. We feel good, we feel relaxed, we feel strong and we are ready.

We want to bring home the W, but we will let the racket do the talking.

After the two opening singles, Lunn and Rolle are scheduled to play the doubles on Saturday. In the reverse singles on Sunday, Major Jr is listed to play Dellien in the battle of the two No.2 seeds and then Newman and Zeballos are tipped for the ultimate showdown between the top two seeds.

But depending on outcome of todays singles, that could all change.

Bahamas launches electronic bail system – Jamaica Observer

Posted: at 5:08 pm

NASSAU, Bahamas (CMC) The Bahamas has launched a new bail management system (BMS) allowing for the processing of bail applications, people who are granted bail, suretors, as well as police station check-ins, to be done electronically.

The Government said that the BMS represents a continued effort by the Office of the Attorney General to crack down on people acting as suretor for more than one persons bail.

The authorities said the system will also rely on biometrics fingerprints and photos to keep track of people who have been granted bail with conditions.

The launch of the BMS comes after two amendments to the Bail Act passed in 2014 and 2015.

The amendments puts the burden on the applicant to satisfy the court that bail should be granted as well as ensure that the protection of the victim is of paramount importance in cases where violence was involved and requires that an individual state that he or she is not currently a surety in any other proceedings.

The amendment also makes it a criminal offence punishable by up to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to US$50,000 or both imprisonment and a fine, if anyone is convicted under the act.

Klansman leader Tesha Miller deported from Bahamas – News … – Jamaica Observer

Posted: at 5:08 pm

KINGSTON, Jamaica Sources from The Bahamas have confirmed that reputed Klansman gang-leader Tesha Miller is now on his way back to the island.

News surfaced last Tuesday that Miller was nabbed in the Bahamas; however his scheduled deportation from the Caribbean country was delayed.

Miller is scheduled to land in Jamaica today.

Last year, Miller was listed as a person of interest by Jamaica's Counter Terrorism and Organized Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) and was asked to report to the police following a spike in murders in the St Catherine North Division, where the Klansman gang is actively engaged in criminal activities.

The police theorise that Miller could assist in their investigation of several of the murders in Spanish Town and sections of Portmore during the first quarter of 2016.

Miller was deported to Jamaica last year after being imprisoned in the US.

He reportedly fled to The Bahamas from Jamaica.

Ex-Mahone Bay mayor dies in Bahamas | The Chronicle Herald – TheChronicleHerald.ca

Posted: April 3, 2017 at 8:41 pm

Former Mahone Bay mayor Joe Feeney longed for a retirement full of travel with his wife Barbara, and the two planned to be in Portugal next January.

But Friday, Feeney, 71, suddenly passed away after swimming near a catamaran during a trip to the Bahamas.

The six-term mayor and former school educator had chosen not to re-offer in October, and his seat eventually went to friend and then-deputy mayor David Devenne, who was shocked by Feeneys death.

We still just arent sure what happened. He and his wife went to the Bahamas in mid-February, and he got back on the boat after swimming, he said.

I was told he sat down in the cockpit and he may have had a heart attack.

Mayor Devenne got a call from the deputy mayor on Friday, who had heard the news from one of Feeneys sons.

I was just really taken aback by all this. He knew so many people, and everyone who knew him loved him, he said.

Feeney lived in Mahone Bay in excess of 35 years.

He made so many friends, and he was active at St. Norberts Roman Catholic Church in Lunenburg. He was also part of the boating community too, Devenne said.

He worked in the school system in Halifax and in the South Shore, and he was so active with the school board, Mount Saint Vincent University and Acadia University. He was always assisting students.

Devenne had breakfast in late January with Feeney and his wife.

They were so excited to travel. I talked to them all about Portugal, and he said he wanted to leave Mahone Bay for winters. He said, Come January 2018, Ill be in Portgual

Feeneys son Tim is currently in the Bahamas with his mother, and Joseph Feeney Jr. is a councillor in Mahone Bay.

The son was acclaimed in October. Feeney Sr. had great things to say about his son around election time.

Hes got good ideas and is a pretty smart kid, he said, laughing, in a previous Herald interview.

It's good to have some youth in there, and weve been fortunate to have female members making up a third of our council.

Devenne remembers the years Feeney was mayor with fondness.

Joe was a character, and he had so much presence. He was always close to town hall, and would always talk, offer his opinions, and take action if he felt he could, he said.

He will be remembered as a man of great strength, who enjoyed his friends, the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

The whole town is having a difficult time. He was a wonderful man, said Devenne.

An autopsy is expected to be done this week, and funeral arrangements have yet to be determined.

O’Reilly’s beachfront trophy home in Bahamas sold for 12m – Irish Independent

Posted: at 8:41 pm

The exclusive property at the Lyford Cay resort in the Bahamas, called Lissadell Tamura, was sold by his bankruptcy trustee. Mr O'Reilly was declared bankrupt in the Bahamas in 2015.

It had been expected that the exclusive property in a gated community on New Providence Island in the Bahamas would have fetched about $17m (16m). Lyford Cay properties are much sought after by wealthy expats and celebrities.

Marketed by Sotheby's International Realty, Lissadell Tamura was described as a private, elevated beachfront property on three acres with 287ft of sandy beach.

The former business mogul once counted a 29pc stake in the publisher of this newspaper, INM, among his assets.

Mr O'Reilly, a former Ireland rugby international, had a 22m judgment secured against him by AIB in 2014.

Aside from his prestigious Bahamas home, he also owned other trophy properties, including his prized 750-acre Castlemartin estate in Co Kildare. It was sold in 2014 to US tycoon John Malone for 28m.

The property had been described as Mr O'Reilly's "spiritual home". His parents and two of his grandchildren are buried in a private graveyard beside a medieval church on the grounds.

His holiday home in Glandore, Co Cork, was sold in 2015 for 1.5m.

Mr O'Reilly (80), a former chief executive of Heinz, has endured a precipitous decline in his fortunes.

He also once owned a significant stake in Waterford Wedgwood, alongside his brother-in-law Peter Goulandris. The pair stuffed hundreds of millions of euro into the business in a failed effort to keep it alive. Waterford Wedgwood collapsed in 2009. Mr Goulandris has also owned a property in the exclusive Lyford Cay resort.
